Victory Motorcycles to be wound down
P
olaris Industries has announced it will begin to wind down its Victory Motorcycles business with immediate effect. Polaris CEO Scott Wine said Victory has struggled to establish the market share needed to succeed and be profitable. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, my team and the Polaris Board of Directors,” said Polaris Industries Chairman and CEO Scott Wine. “Over the past 18 years, we have invested not only resources, but our hearts and souls, into forging the Victory Motorcycles brand, and we are exceptionally proud of what
our team has accomplished. Since inception, our teams have designed and produced nearly 60 Victory models that have been honoured with 25 of the industry’s top awards. The experience, knowledge, infrastructure and capability we’ve built in those 18 years gave us the confidence to acquire and develop the Indian Motorcycle brand, so I would like to express my gratitude to everyone associated with Victory Motorcycles and celebrate your many contributions.” Polaris says it will continue to supply parts for a period of 10 years, as well as service and warranty coverage to Victory owners and dealers.
Triumph to supply Moto2
B
ritish motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has won the contract to be the official engine supplier for the Moto2 championship from 2019. Honda will no longer supply its CBR600RR engines after the 2018 season due to ceasing production of its middleweight sports bike. Triumph bid against Kawasaki and MV Agusta to secure the rights to supply its engines. It’s thought Triumph will be supplying a new version of its three-cylinder four-stroke motor that’s due for release in 2017.

L
ast year was signed off with Honda men Tony Rees and Cody Cooper winning the big end of year races. Rees cleaned up the Whanganui Street races to claim the Suzuki Series and Cooper the 45th running of the Honda Summercross. A new year and a whole new race season begins. Will the old masters reign though 2017? Rees has a lead in the national road race series, but last year’s champion Sloan Frost has shown it doesn’t take much to slip back down the table. Head to page 20 to catch up on the first two rounds of the NZ Superbikes. And we take a look at the riders to watch on the domestic motocross scene on page 78. Be sure to get along to any of these events when they are close to town. We really do have some of the best racers there are and some fantastic venues. Get out there and support our local racing.

Rees leads as Superbike Nationals reach halfway stage.
I
t’s been quite a couple of months for New Zealand road-racing icon Tony Rees. The multi-time former national road-racing champion from Whakatane took his Honda CBR1000RR to win the three-round pre-nationals Suzuki Series in the Formula One/Superbike class in late December, while his youngest son Damon Rees took his Honda CBR600RR to celebrate his first major success in winning the 600cc F2/Supersport class in the same competition. Perhaps that was an omen of things to come because Tony Rees also leads the Superbike class after the second of four rounds of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in Invercargill in January and rising young star Damon Rees is locked in a tight battle for top honours in the 600cc class as well. This father and son double act will be looking to push on with their winning momentum when the second half of the season gets underway in Taupo in February and then stay out of trouble so that they might collect national titles at the fourth and final round at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, a week later (on March 4-5). Tony Rees started his weekend in Invercargill second in the championship standing, 10 points behind Suzuki’s defending national superbike champion Sloan Frost, but two race wins and then a runner-up finish, behind fellow Honda rider Alastair Hoogenboezem, propelled Rees past Wellington’s Frost and into the series lead.
Frost (Suzuki GSX-R1000) had a disastrous weekend in Invercargill, culminating in him crashing out of the final race, and Rees now leads the class, 18 points ahead of Christchurch’s Hoogenboezem, with Frost slipping back to third in the standings. Rees took the championship lead after winning the first two superbike races of the weekend, but could not quite make it a hat-trick of wins as Hoogenboezem came on strong to celebrate his breakthrough first victory of the series, winning the third superbike race on the
Sunday and thrusting himself also into championship contention. What is perhaps most remarkable is that new championship leader Rees had not originally intended to contest the nationals this year. “I simply wanted to be at the nationals to support my boys (21-year-old Damon and 23-year-old Mitch) and I wasn’t going to race at all. But I had a change of mind when my sons offered to relieve me of mechanic’s duties if I would race alongside them. So here I am and it’s turning out to be a great season for us all.” Mitch Rees (Honda CBR1000RR) is currently running sixth overall in the same superbike class as his father. Meanwhile, sharing the track with the Superbike riders, Invercargill Honda rider Jeremy Holmes is still the runaway leader in the battle-within-a-battle for 1000cc Superstock class honours, now a massive Al Hoogenboezem

W
hen Edgar Meller won the inaugural Australian Grand Prix he did not have to worry whether he had chosen the right compound tyre or whether he should run carbon or steel brakes. On his TT Douglas, he ran the road tyres fitted at the English factory and when he operated the brake levers, bicycle-type calipers gripped the wheel rims. That original Australian Grand Prix was run on a road course near Yeltholme, about 25 kilometres from the New South Wales town of Bathurst. The course lap was 24.945km long and the Grand Prix was run over nine laps for a total distance of 224km. Back then there were more starters than in today’s GP events, with 24 machines on the grid on that hot day on October 5, 1914. After three and a half hours of racing, a dust-covered Meller took the chequered flag having averaged 64km/h on his 350cc horizontally-opposed twin 26

cylinder Douglas. There were just seven other finishers. The Australian GP was held at Yeltholme again in 1915, moved to another road circuit outside Goulburn, then was next run on another public road circuit (Vale) near Bathurst before finding a semipermanent home at Mount Panorama on a track built during the Great Depression as a make-work scheme. To get government funding, it was built as a ‘scenic road’. Originally gravel, the Mount Panorama track was steadily upgraded over the years, but has never lost its unique appeal. The track climbs 174 metres up the side of the hill (Mount Panorama) crosses the top and descends back down to the start/finish line for a total distance of 6.2km. This means that the circuit has significant climb and descent grades (1 in 6.1) which are uniquely challenging. Added to that, the circuit is also a public road, when not being used for racing. This means that anyone can go to Bathurst, and ride around the circuit (60km/h speed limit). There are several private homes and businesses with their entrances directly
off the track. However, most of the upgrades to the circuit were to improve it for touring car racing and in many cases rider’s lost their line of sight through corners due to the intrusion of concrete walls. New Zealand riders featured prominently in the Australian Grand Prix at Bathurst, including Rod Coleman, Ginger Molloy, John Woodley (three times 500GP winner), Graeme Crosby, Stuart Avant, John

When a company with racing at its very core designs a sports-tourer you can expect some fireworks...
W
hen KTM NZ unleashed the 1290 Super Duke on our shores in 2014 the KR staff were somewhat stunned by its performance. 170hp of go from a 1301cc V-twin with no fairing and a road riding position quite literally blew our collective socks off. And there must be something in the water at KTM because the lads and lasses in the design department then came up with the idea of turning it into a sports-tourer... which normally takes enough out of the sails of a decent sports bike to render it slightly bland and something that neither sports nor tours particularly well. Thankfully KTM is... well... KTM and the package was diluted only just enough to make it quite possibly the first sports-tourer to actually be able to live up to the ‘sports’ part of sports-tourer. And make no mistake... this is the sportiest tourer you’re ever likely to ride. You might expect me to start with the engine... and what an engine it is... but I’m going to leave that for a moment. Instead, I’m going to start by putting this bike into context. The 1290’s GT moniker is borrowed from the car world; a high
performance sports car that can eat up grand tours, think Aston Martin DB5 or Ferrari 250 GTO from the 60s or a Jaguar XKR of recent years. Fast, comfortable and stylish. With those cars in mind, the 1290 GT is a Grand Toursimo in the truest sense; the engine has a serious amount of go with 170hp up its tailpipes which is held in check by a stiff steel chassis, the suspension is a quality semi-active offering from WP, brakes are top-drawer Brembos, there’s factory luggage and decent room for a pillion. While I have a soft-spot for the 1290 Super Duke R, I do find it just a tad ‘focused’. Yes, I know, it’s meant to be focused, but if you’re not trying to do wheelies out of corners, wheelies along straights or accelerate so fast you get dizzy... it all seems a bit overkill. The GT, however, takes the best bits of the Super Duke R and turns it them an eminently enjoyable and useable (and insanely fast) wee beastie. For example, one of my favourite backroads is a twisty, turny, uppy, downy (often all at the same time) ribbon of tar seal. It’s a road that rewards bikes with a taut, lightweight chassis and punchy engine and punishes heavy, flabby, under-suspended machines. Despite a full compliment of luggage and a screen big enough to hide behind, the GT

I
can’t for the life of me work out whether I am happy; a true, smiling, laugh-just–under-the-surface sort of happiness because I am transported back to the era of my youth when the brightness of colour and edge was sharp and delicious, and when the teeming potential of life bloomed before me like a magnificent sundewed morning, or, whether the Seventies really had a grip on style and design that just filled you up with silly pleasure for pleasure’s sake. And if you have managed to get through that introduction and stayed with me, then you probably get what I’m talking about. The object which kicked off this rather floral illumination was, or is, rather, the Suzuki VanVan 200 - a small, not
very highly powered, lustrous, faintly ridiculous, massively entertaining and attractive package of fat-wheeled fun and joy. There is no hint of artifice here, from the tank shape and candy-coloured paint, to the fat tyres, single headlight and speedo, mini ape-hanger bars and wide over-upholstered banana seat, it fair bloody screams Seventies ‘chopper bike’. It was desirable and well-found then, and so it is today.
Look... this is no tourer, no racer, or even a scrambler. No, it is part of a long and valued legacy of well-built, gianthearted little bikes that become life long friends. Surfers, golfers, beachgoers and bach owners, guys with kids, hell, granddads with kids, kids themselves, teenagers, mates nearby, and farmers, sharecroppers even fire-break tourers, every one of them - will adore this bike. Because it’s fun. It is pure and simply

hen I hear the word Scrambler it invokes certain images and memories. Think Steve McQueen riding in the 1963 classic The Great Escape or Brando in On The Waterfront - a certain ‘bad boy’ kinda ethos. It’s probably a little bit of a class thing too; it suggests workingmen, and turning your hand to everything in hard times, and “making the best of a shit deal”. And traditionally Scramblers have been seen as part dirt tracker, part off roader and part café racer – and all street cred. There’s the headlight jammed between a couple of sturdy forks, a cobbled-together seat, a worked powerplant, a bit of rust and black paint and a ‘found’ tank, all somehow held together with tape and tears and bolts from the back of the ‘shop. Yeah, maybe I’m overselling it, but you get the idea. A Triumph Scrambler – yeah. A Ducati?
BMW R NineT Scrambler

Yeah... maybe. A Matchless, an Ariel or BSA? Sure. Even possibly a Honda. But a BMW? Taking delivery of a brand spanking shiny BMW R Nine T Scrambler was anticipated, but not hotly. I like the R Nine T, but what were they thinking? As it turns out they were thinking plenty. It seems BMW has taken the Scrambler idea and given it its own translated teutonic meaning... hardarse. Frankly, I was searching for an analogy for this bike and, while hurtling round some Muriwai back roads, it struck me. BMW is sort of your private schoolboy, comes from a moneyed background, is pampered and used to getting his own way, has all the toys, a pool at home, a hot mum, etc... ahh, come on, you know the type. But this schoolboy turns out to KIWI RIDER

Since 1992 Britton Adventures’ Far North Adventure Rides have delivered sights and locales that are ‘nirvana on a stick’ for two-wheeled adventure seekers. Dene Priestley ventured north once more to do the event which first whet his adventure riding appetite many moons ago.

et again I was a late entrant to Yamaha-sponsored Far North Adventure, and without my brother’s urging I probably would have stayed behind to keep the business ticking, but instead I am grinning somewhat wearily after an epic outing on some of terra firma’s best bits that most car travellers don’t even know exist. We also turned the one day event into a three day one by riding up north and back to Auckland on as many gravel or winding back roads as we could, via Maungaratoto, Maungatapere (lunch), Kaikohe, Mangamuka, and Peria, plus the weather pixies also threw down the gauntlet by ensuring we arrived at the Taipa event base looking like drowned
muppets, and just for giggles did the same for our return trip. The event day however was a blue-roofed stunner. Our notable steeds were suitably retro and eclectic. I was retro aboard Trigger, my much loved and very adventure experienced 1992 XR600R, while brother Noel went with eclectic (or is that just weird?), on his 1988 Yamaha TDR250 twin cylinder two-stroke dual sport. Hey, anybody can ride a new box-ready gem, we just like our bikes a little off the radar. It didn’t take us till Maungaweka to learn that the XR’s torque was king of the pair on gravel, especially over the corrugated bits, but on the twisty tar-seal the TDR’s race-inspired TZR donk could stoke up the fire; it was a very close thing... if not slanted towards the Yamaha with its more roadbike-orientated stance. Anyway,
once we arrived sopping wet late in the afternoon, signed on and grabbed our rolly-box route sheets at the Taipa Rugby Club event base, found our waterfront digs and room-mate Ian at Cable Bay, we then chose the Mangonui Pub to administer the needed warming medicinal fluids after our rather hypothermic arrival, washed down with a serve of the locally hooked, but world famous, fush & chups. The ride day kicked off with the traditional adventurer’s brekky, i.e. plenty of bacon, followed by Mike and Angela’s briefing. We were then free to hit the road Jack. After a road cruise past the previous night’s dispensory, we headed off the tarmac and into farm heaven. We traversed three farms (I think) in quick succession, the first on a gravel track, then grass, and the third lush rolling pastures gave great views and nil opening-&-shutting of gates, bar the first and last. Stunning, and with the dampness all but evaporated easy riding for both the smaller dual-sport bikes and the German super-tankers. After a nip across some private Maori land which appeared to house a carved version of stonehenge and a workshop where local lads were working on amazing traditional pacific sailing vessels, we hit the sand and headed up Tokerau Beach on the eastern side of the Karikari Peninsula. The north is truly blessed with riding access to cool places,
so thanks to Mike and Ang for sharing a wee bit with us, yet again. With a few more peninsula sights enjoyed the spread out mob headed across to the western peninsula coast and then hit the floodbank paper road south towards some more rural exploration before hitting Awanui for fuel and, in our case, a decidely decent caffiene injection. With the heart again pumping it was on to 90-mile Beach for a spell before venturing into what was for many the most fun bit, and for others the most challenging... namely 30-odd kilometres of forest tracks with linking forest roads. The trail sections were sandy and surprisingly dry, meaning a bit of hard work for the bigger bikes while being pretty good fun for the traillies, and with most of my trail riding done on Woodhill Forest’s sandy base, I felt quite at home roosting through the softer bits, even with a rear tyre I’d pretty much shagged on the gravel sections on the ride up the day before. Lunch was put on by the Pukenui School and was a quality feast worthy of a Ponsonby cafe, with pastries and sushi galore, plus sweet desserts I felt a tad guilty consuming while all sweaty and in dirt clobber, especially after that third helping. Weighed down with all that yummy goodness, we fuelled up on the Houhora

Ferris makes it two in a row for Woodville
H
ome turf advantage counted for nothing at the big annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville in late January. It was again a case of champions galore at this year’s edition of this 56th edition of the popular stand-alone event, but, when it was all boiled down, it was Australian Dean Ferris who took the most prestigious silverware, the Yamaha rider clinching the Senior Feature Race trophy at the Honda-sponsored event for a second consecutive season. It was remarkable when he won it on debut at Woodville last season, and perhaps no less significant this time around because he was facing a deeper and even more impressive line-up of talented individuals, many of whom were talented fellowAustralians he’d expect to face in the Australian nationals later this year.

New Zealand MX1 champion Cody Cooper (Honda Racing Team CRF450), of Mount Maunganui, led from the start of the feature race, but Ferris was soon challenging for the lead and took over the front spot on lap two. Cooper then dropped back when a slow-starting Waters powered through from fourth place to snatch the No.2 position, and this is how it remained until, the end, with another Australian visitor, Jed Beaton (Honda Racing Team CRF450), eventually pushing through to claim fourth spot and Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter (3Twenty3 Racing Kawasaki KX450F) rounding out the top five. Now just a part-time racer, Tauranga’s Ben Townley shocked everyone, probably himself included, by winning the first MX1 race at Woodville. He placed fourth in race two and he pulled out of race three after a crash and that DNF
Ferris, the 2016 Australian open class motocross champion, took his Altherm JCR Yamaha YZ450F to finish 4-1-2 in his three MX1 class outings, losing out to fellow Australian Todd Waters (Berry Sweet Honda CRF450) in that high-octane battle for MX1 class honours – Waters winning the class with a 3-2-1 score-card – but Ferris again won the race that really mattered, the invitation feature race, and so the annual event’s
dropped him down to seventh overall for the day. Working as brand ambassador for Suzuki New Zealand, former world MX2 champion Townley does not race as frequently as he once did and so his fitness was lacking, but he certainly showed he still has the skills and speed to win. “It’s fantastic to win this trophy for a second time,” said the 26-year-old Ferris, from Kyogle on the Gold Coast.
“My trip to New Zealand is all about building up for the Australian nationals and so this was a great way to start that. “Lapped riders got in my way (while I was leading) in the final MX1 class race of the day. It was really hard to avoid them and Todd (Waters) got past me, so I had to accept second place. I’m happy with how I rode, but I always want to win and so I was disappointed with that. “That’s not bad, though,
because it was my first big race of the year. My speed is very good.” Others to impress at Woodville were MX2 (250cc) class winner Dylan Walsh (Altherm JCR Yamaha YZ250F), the 19-year-old Christchurch rider having only just arrived back in New Zealand after two and a half years of racing in the United States. More used to being upside down on a flying MX bike, we got Levi Sherwood to sit on a chair long enough to tell us what he’s up to.
K
iwi FMX (Freestyle MX) legend Levi Sherwood is back on home soil after another epic year of events around the world including Red Bull X-Fighters, X Games, Nitro Circus and Nitro World Games, then back home to Big Boys Toys in Auckland and Palmy as well as across the ditch to the Australian SX Open. The evolution of the sport of freestyle motocross continues to progress with new innovations of tricks and bike modifications in order to stay ahead of the game. Levi has made some extensive customisations to his new 2017 KTM 250SX with the intention of reducing weight (and therefore inertia) which makes the bike more manoeuvrable in the air, allowing him to hold and extend tricks further than before, and push the limits of FMX even further. He recently gave us a run down on his FMX machine, as well as insight into his life outside of freestyle motocross, what he’s been up and what’s in store for 2017.

Since coming back home, you’ve been flat out with shows and events in New Zealand like Big Boys Toys. How have they gone for you? Yeah I did heaps here in 2016 actually. They’ve been going pretty good. Nick [Franklin] has been doing a lot of work with Franklin Farm to put that on the road which is cool. It’s just been good to be riding close to home for a change, pretty cruisey really. It’s a bit of a switch for you after doing quite a few competitions where you’re judged, to doing a show with a bit more freedom isn’t it?
Obviously on a freestyle bike, your suspension needs to be stiffer which Renny @ Sevenee has done. You need flip levers, and a foot hook – as you mentioned – on the left side just above the shifter. I make all of the parts myself and re-make anything I can out of titanium. The flip levers can go model to model because they just mount on the handlebars, but the foot hook I had to remake. I pretty much went over the whole bike and anything that was steel that I could get away with Ti, I re-made it with Ti. Even some alloy parts I made out of thinner titanium so it’s lighter and stronger. Quite a bit actually.
to see where it will take things with this bike because it’s going to be a while until my ability catches up to what this bike can do. As well as the fully fledged workshop you have here for your own engineering and fabrication, what else do you get up to outside of the FMX scene? Just working on my bike, that’s all I’ve been doing lately. A bit of everything really; quite a bit of mountain biking, going to the dirt jumps with my girlfriend Ellie, building stuff like bike parts, and radio controlled cars. I mostly just
Shows are good, aye? Stress free – just turn up and ride. They’re definitely not as much fun as a comp, but it’s nice to finish up the year with some shows.
You’ve had a busy schedule of events over the last few months – from X Games in Texas to Red Bull X-Fighters in Madrid then back to Nitro World Games in Salt Lake City and a few in between. Tell us about that. Yeah, I spent 3-4 months overseas this year. Both Red Bull X-Fighters and X Games didn’t really go to plan for me, but that’s all good. X-Fighters was still an awesome event though. Then the one off Nitro World Games actually turned out to be a really good event, especially with the judging and format, so I hope it comes back again next year. I managed to get the win there. I also went over to the Monster Cup in Vegas which was an X-Games Qualifier and finished up third there, so it was a pretty good year.
You’ve picked up your new 2017 KTM 250SX recently, and got it up and running ‘Levi-spec’. Tell us about your new bike. Yeah I think I’ve had it two months now. I love it. It’s way better than the old one. Even just stock, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the previous model. When I pulled it apart for the first time I noticed every single part on the bike is new. There might be a handful of parts that are the same, but you wouldn’t be able to pick it. It’s been going well. I’ve spent probably good month working on it, making some changes before I even rode it. I’ve made parts for it, even a new subframe, trying to make it lighter. Made quite a few parts out of titanium and alloy, and making improvements where I can. Can you tell us about some of the specific modifications you’ve made? For example, you’ve made a piece that sits above your gear shifter.
Obviously there’s a reason for all of this – to save weight, which then makes it easier to manoeuvre the bike in the air. Can you give us some insight? Yeah it makes it a lot easier in the air, even just jumping and doing whips. The same old tricks that I’ve always done are just easier now. Not as hard to flip the bike for example, because it spins easier, which means you can hang off it longer, and get better extension of your tricks. I’m honestly not quite used to it yet. I’ve been riding it a month or so now, and I’m only just starting to get comfortable enough to ride at the level I was riding on my old bikes. It’s pretty cool and I’m excited
hang out in my shed making stuff to be honest. Looking ahead to the next few months over NZ summer, what’s the plan? I’m pretty much finished up for the year with all the events. The next event for me is mid-January when I head up to Tauranga for the Cure Kids event which Luke Price is putting on [KR went to press after this - Ed]. Looking forward to that. It will be the third year we’ve been doing it. Then it rolls into the Nitro Circus tour which should keep me busy for a while after that. he four-round 2017 New Zealand Motocross Championships are just around the corner, with round one scheduled for Pleasant Point, near Timaru, on February 5, and once again it’s almost impossible to predict an outcome. It’s fair to say that Mount Maunganui’s Cody
Cooper is favoured to make it five national MX1 titles in a row, but, after that, it’s anyone’s guess. We decided we’d pull a few cards from the deck and see if we could deal a few winning hands... we’ve picked a few aces to profile here, although we should apologise in advance, because we also know there will probably be a couple of jokers we’ve overlooked too.

Rock down to There’s no doubt that electric bikes are a part of the future and these little ones are clean, fun and quiet enough to not annoy the neighbours.

orrot was founded in Spain in 1948 by Don Luis Iniondo. The company made bicycles that grew a reputation for great sturdiness. By 1950 Torrot was making mopeds and, later, reliable motorcycles. In this time Torrot pioneered the retractable side-stand which we all take for granted today.

However, in the 80s, like a lot of companies in those tough financial times, they had to close. Reborn in 2011, again making push bikes, its focus moved to electric kids bikes. So KR rounded up a few likely kids and took them to a farmland club trial ride to give them a blast. On offer were two model styles that feature the same electric motor and running gear. One is set up as a trail/
MX looking machine, the other a trials bike. From dead empty the battery has a four hour charge time, an approximate running distance of 50km when charged, and Torrot says the bike will run continuously at full throttle for 40 minutes... so not bad! The bikes also come with a 24 month warranty if not used for competition. One very cool feature is that the engine power can be
adjusted remotely from your phone when you download the App. This means that when little Johnny is getting a bit too excited... you can curb his enthusiasm. The two machines retail for between $2500 and $2700. This test is of the E10 and T10 (Enduro and Trials) machines and larger versions are available (E12/T12), which we’ll test when we get our hands on them.

I’m 12 years old and a casual trail rider. For me the Torrot was felt a little small but it went really cool anyway. It just grunts off and you can’t hear anything other than a little chain noise, which is weird at first. I found it super light and very easy to ride, you just twist and go! You have to remember to turn the power off because if you play with the throttle, even just standing beside the bike, it will zoom off... you can’t hear the engine so you don’t think its going. All the brakes and suspension felt great and I couldn’t believe how long the battery lasted – dad took me home after lunch before it went flat. I think the Torrot bikes are real cool, I could ride one around home and the neighbours would never know.

I had a lot of fun riding both models, but it was strange having no engine noise. As an average sized 9-year-old, it felt small, but still very enjoyable to ride – I would recommend them for a 4-7-year-old kid, It would have been a dream to have one when I was 5 or 6! The best part is that you could ride them in a local park or your back yard and not annoy any old people! I hope that Torrot looks at making medium- and larger-sized bikes soon.

Vege called my mum to ask if I was interested in test riding a Torrot electric trials bike and dirt bike. Yes please, I replied. Mum took me to a cool farm in Waimauku to a Waitemata motorcycles trials event where I met Vege, Cooper and Shaun. I was really amazed when I first saw the bikes at how cool they looked. I got into my gear, listened to the safety briefing and then jumped on the trials bike first because it was my favourite. At first I just rode around a small car park while we got used to the bikes. When Geoff (the photographer) arrived, we went down to
a small marked-out trials track. The trials bike felt strange at first because it had no seat and it was so quiet. It was amazing how fast it went and wheelied over logs really easy because it is so light. The motocross bike was so easy to jump and move around. I think that the motocross bike was faster than the trials bike, but the trials bike was easier to pop wheelies. The battery took ages to go flat and I found a switch that could make the bike slower for when a younger kid had a turn.

I
have to say that over the course of my entire life I have coveted and envied trials bikes. It has been a curse. And I am not yet cured. I still believe trials machines are the sexiest, most ‘hairstanding-up-on-yourneck, excitement-inducing, earthbound machines made by man. It’s the lean, work-specific, seatless promise of fun and thrill, and the passport to go play in trees, rocks, streams, banks, grass and dirt that first got me hooked as a 15-year-old schoolboy. I’d hang around like a lovesick pup, watching as people unloaded blue, snapping Bultacos, and the Ferrari-like (well, in my eyes anyway) red Montesa Cota 315s and the shamrocked green and white tanks of the Ossas. The smell of two-stroke was like opium to me then, and I’d look on longingly at these exotic, noisy beasts; ogled as they pitched over drop-offs, or snaked up rocky canyons pouring out rivers of intoxicating blue smoke. Many were piloted by cloth clad men, still redolent of the 1950s, with cream-coloured ‘Norsewear’ socks turned over the tops of their boots,
and riding with peaked cloth caps instead of helmets. But I was the penniless kid, gazing in the sweet shop window. In my mind of course, I was feathering that clutch, revving the engine and ripping up banks, balancing with the poise of a gymnast, and legs like a gazelle. Much later in life I bought my first proper trials bike; a Yamaha TY250, in Hamilton of all places, while on a tour of New Zealand performing in a road safety musical. I spent my per diems (my daily food allowance for six months touring) on buying that bike. And quickly discovered that my ambition had greatly exceeded my ability. Oh I’d had plenty of practise, I had scrambled my Vespas, Jawas and cheap ninth-hand bikes, seconds from the wrecker’s yard, that I had used as transport. But I hadn’t spent enough time
in the art of trials. I learnt though. That TY took a tremendous amount of abuse. I smashed it into rocks, dropped it in rivers, punched into banks, jammed the throttle open, all the usual newbie dramas, and all with as much maintenance as I could deliver. None. Poor bike. But eventually I learnt some basics. Then family and working life took over; single income, kids and a need to stay healthy and unbroken. And then twelve years ago, I’d had enough. I got onto this new-fangled thing called Trade Me and found a bike, in Nelson, and brought it home. Delivery day had me delirious with excitement as I rushed out to the freight yard to pick it up. A Scorpa 250. French. Blue. Modern. It was love. And I set about learning moto trials proper. Over the years I have had four trials bikes and now I’m riding the new 2016 Gas Gas 250 TXT Racing. Gas Gas machines have been the premier trials bikes in the modern era, and in the last few decades the Trials greats like Jordi Tarres and Adam Raga have championed them. But nothing stands still, and recently the Gas Gas factory closed, and then in KIWI RIDER

10 YEARS OF CLASSICS
elieve it or not 2017 marks the tenth year of publication for this classic column. That means 120 columns and some 84,000 words. I thought it would be a good idea to pick out some of my favourite bikes from the ten year collection. The most interesting observation from my perspective is the shift in emphasis over the years. This hasn’t been intentional, but rather a reflection of what is happening in the classic fraternity. Also many of the

McIntosh Manx at Pukekohe bikes that were considered classics during the early years must now be considered vintage, and more recently some bikes have become classics with the passing of time. In the first twenty columns fifteen of the bikes
were British, three were Japanese, and two Italian. The second twenty columns looked considerably different, with eight British, six Japanese, three Italian, two American, and one German. The next twenty featured only five
British, nine Japanese, two German and two Italian. I guess this was bound to happen. When we consider that during the hey-day of motorcycle production after the Second World War there were BSA, Triumph, Norton, Royal Enfield, Matchless, AJS, Velocette, and Vincent, all producing motorcycles in Britain. Within twenty years the British industry disintegrated, and the Japanese filled the gap with Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In Europe Ducati, Moto Guzzi and BMW scrambled through the onslaught from Japan, but things were never the same again. In the British arena today, only Triumph has managed to survive with any significant numbers. This means that for classic enthusiasts of the future, Japanese machines will fill the gap made by the absence of
British products. It is very likely that many of the classic British bikes will end up in museums, or private collections, too valuable to ride. In fact that is what is happening already. Here are a few of my favourites from the ten years. A classic British bike that has survived, and has been built since 1980 is the Hesketh. It was featured back in 2007. Always one of my favourites it is virtually hand built, and considered by enthusiasts the two-wheeled equivalent of an Aston Martin. The Hesketh was the dream machine of Lord Hesketh former team boss, and owner of a Formula One team. I believe only three or four of them came to New Zealand. I still cherish the day I spent riding the deserted Canterbury country roads with two Heskeths and a mate, Craig Roberts, who had made them available.
