ELLO... and welcome to the May issue of Kiwi Rider. Bike manufacturers seem to be getting bolder with their designs. Triumph and Moto Guzzi are two cases in point. Triumph has successfully been been producing heritage machines for years but the Bonneville Bobber 1200 is more than a toe dip into the more custom side of things. Check it out on page 38. Moto Guzzi’s MGX21 Flying Fortress is an equally bold machine, one that has quite tickled the fancy of tester Jock, who isn’t known for his love of cruisers. Turn to page 30. It seems the age of the automatic motorcycle has finally arrived. Sure, automatic gearboxes have been accepted on scooters for years

but Honda’s DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) fitted to the Africa Twin is the first automatic we’ve ridden which is a genuine alternative to a manual clutch machine. Take a look on page 46. On a racing front the two big road and dirt racing championships are done and dusted. Superbikes came down to the wire with just half a point separating Sloan Frost and Tony Rees. Can’t get much closer than that. And in the Motocross championship, Cody Cooper has once again stamped his authority on the MX1 class. Congratulations to both Sloan and Cody for their respective back to back titles. What’ve you been up to this summer? Send us an email to let us know, we’d love to hear about the adventures you’ve had. BEN WILKINS

Kawasaki Japan visits New Zealand

T

op Japanese Kawasaki officials visited New Zealand last month. Before taking in the last round of the New Zealand motocross championships they called in on a few of the New Zealand retail shops. Manager of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Keisuke Goto is pictured with Shane Verhoeven, Managing Director Kawasaki NZ, and Red Baron Motorcycles Director Koji Ozawa, showing his countrymen around the Auckland store. Kawasaki NZ has gone through a lot of change recently. Shane Verhoeven took the reins from long time Kawasaki front man Mike Wilkins back in late August last year and former top motocrosser Mike Cotter

joined the Kawasaki team in early December. Mike told us of the new Z900, Vulcan S

Cafe and other new models like the Versys 300, Z650 and Ninja 650, and possibly

the Z1000S, are all to due be released here in NZ over the coming months.

with a little over 10 laps to run with a mechanical failure. Richardson, travelling with the help of Seth Devereux, chronicled his two-week adventure on his (Richardson Racing) Facebook page.

The pair shared their adventures, including getting the bike, prepping it and finding a team. With limited track time they managed to qualify in 11th and get as high as 4th during

Kiwi roadracers on world stage

K

iwi Supersport 600 riders were busy last month with at least three riders from this year’s championship riding overseas. Damon Rees, 2017 NZ Supersport (600cc) champion, rode at the Wakefeild Park round of the Australian domestic championship with runner up Shane Richardson and Avalon Biddle both flying the flag overseas. Rees rode a CBR600 bought a couple of days before in Sydney. It was a busy few days for Team Rees Racing. The team had to change engines on the bike they bought because it was blown up. Then a quick dyno before going to the track two hours south of Sydney. None of the team had any experience at the track. Damon managed to get up to second fastest in practice but crashed in the first wet qualifying session

on Saturday. With the bike badly damaged, and having to start from the back of the grid for the races, it was an uphill battle to repair the bike over night. The team were shocked to see Damon make his way back up to 6th with the crushed exhaust they hadn’t managed to replace. “You couldn’t get your little finger through the header pipe,” Damon’s father Tony told us. In the second race, Rees made it up as high as fourth, but unfortunately joined a number of other competitors who got caught out when the rain came down while on dry tyres. Damon took quite a heavy fall, but the team is keen to return and ride at Winton at the end of April. Follow them on Facebook - Team Rees Racing. Kiwi national Supersport 600 number 2, Shane Richardson, recently competed in the 75th running of the Daytona 200. Cruelly he had to pull out

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE L-BRACKETS The key to the Bike-Pack System starts with the L-Brackets. These are custom-made for each model bike. At the present time, we cater for well over 2000 models. Once the L-Brackets are fitted to your bike then you can configure just how you want to carry your luggage.

Evo SyStEm Our latest EVO design for the VENTURA BikePack System uses a horizontal rack that secures and supports the packs ensuring there is no load movement when riding. As with the original Pack-Rack System the new EVO System offers you many options as to how you can position the packs and consequently the load. It all depends on your personal preference or whether you are riding solo or with a pillion. The EVO System Rack is fully interchangeable with the original Bike-Pack System. All you need are the L-Brackets, once you have them you can mix and match to whatever suits your situation.

Pack forward

Pack rearward

We truly believe there is no other luggage system that gives you the options as to how you carry your gear. Whether you are going on a major trip or just riding around town we have an answer for you. • Slip the pack on • Snap the buckles • Tighten the straps • Job done – you’re on your way.

EVO 10 Pack, pack forward

And then of course there is how our ASTRO Top-Box fits and our Pannier Support System with the Bonneville Panniers. But they are another story! It’s all about the L-Brackets.

I had no option but to just keep on fighting until the end: Sloan Frost

Sloan Frost

Amazing fight-back gives Frost the Superbike crown

I

t needed to be a fight-back of epic proportions, but Wellington’s Sloan Frost and his Suzuki GSX-R1000 were up for it. The final weekend of racing in this season’s New Zealand Superbike Championships at Hampton Downs in early March went right down to the wire, with Frost sensationally overcoming a massive points deficit to eventually clinch the 2017 Superbike title by the smallest of margins. Arriving at the Waikato circuit with a huge points lead, it had looked almost a formality that Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Honda CBR1000RR) would go on to take the superbike title for 2017, but that’s not how it panned out in the end. In what some might call a miracle, Frost overcame a whopping 32.5-point deficit at the start of the weekend to win the superbike crown for a second consecutive year. Although seemingly been out of the championship chase, Frost showed he was no quitter and set about his weekend’s work by finishing runner-up to Christchurch’s Alastair Hoogenboezem (Honda CBR1000RR) in the event’s first superbike race on the Saturday, while Rees struggled with disintegrating tyres

and settled for fourth. Frost then won the first of two superbike races on Sunday, while Rees again managed fourth, and this tightened the title chase to just 13.5 points with only the final race of the series still to come. Fourth or better in that race would still have been enough for Rees to prevail but, when the last race was staged in two parts after other riders crashed and forced stoppages, Frost was able to produce two wins and Rees crossed the line in fifth place both times – the title therefore went to Frost by the incredibly slim margin of just half a point. “I had no option but to just keep on fighting until the end,” said Frost. “I had a bad start in the first race on Saturday and then took too long to make passes and so I had to accept second position.” But it was a fired-up Frost who came out swinging on day two on the Sunday. “I only had an outside chance of winning the title and all I could do was go and try to win races and then see how it all stacked up after that.” He effectively won both races on Sunday and, with maximum points to Frost while Rees battled to find traction, it was enough to get the job done.

Moto Guzzi’s MGX21 Flying Fortress is big, bold and something of a beauty according to Jock McLauchlan.

T

he Moto Guzzi MGX21 Flying Fortress is an audacious beast. The design is daring and few machines have the visual impact of Guzzi’s MGX21. It’s not just the stunning and unique styling – this bike is immensely long too. It’s a good half foot (15cm) longer than a Rocket III, and the last time I looked the Rocket III was a fully fledged man’s motorcycle. Yes, this is a serious (and heavy) motorcycle, not a soft option and I’m picking, due to the bike’s sheer vastness, most prospective owners will be male. But, honestly that’s not what this ultra Guzzi is all about – it is truly a thing of beauty – to ride, to behold and simply bask in its reflected glory while having a coffee. While stopped at a cafe I was told by a professional-looking dude that the MGX21 was the most beautiful motorcycle he had ever seen... turns out he was a German optometrist... so I’m sure his vision was excellent. Is it the bright red cylinder heads and Brembo brake calipers, the bat-wing double-bubble front or the acres of carbon fibre that has the greatest impact? For me it’s the red heads that first grab my attention... but everywhere you look the MGX21 impresses. Out on the road, the handling feel is as unique as the stunning looks are different. It has a big 21-inch front wheel and 32-degree steering head angle, but with more trail than the shorter wheelbase California, to help accommodate it. This all creates a turn-in feel that I’ve never experienced before. Initially the turn from centre is light and free. Then the steering seems to slow up drastically and in tight turns it almost needs to be steered like a car. However, after some adjustment time getting used to it, I learned the Flying

Fortress is truly capable and enjoyable. Get this bad boy on our less ‘observed’ open back roads and it can hustle. It’s fair and important to reinforce the obvious here though... open flowing roads are its forte and it is least happy manoeuvering at low speed. Moto Guzzi has a patent pending on the steering head damper which progressively stiffens as lock is applied. This is very effective and much reduces the tendency for the handle bars to ‘flop’ on to full lock when turning at

low speed. After all, this is a 341kg kerb weight machine (23kg more than the California), with a lot of weight on the nose and that damper surely does ease the muscle load at low speed while also keeping things relaxed and steady at pace. In strong cross winds the 21-inch wheel is affected and makes the bars move around. I put this down to the cool-looking solid carbon fibre insert that allows little air to pass through the wheel. While unnerving at first, I soon became

used to the feel, relaxed and then forgot about it. In sixth gear at speeds in excess of the old ton mark (done on closed roads of course) the MGX will weave a little, but then this is a full-on bagger and high speed is not what it’s about. The 96 peak horse power at 6500rpm from the manly sized 1380cc V-twin won’t impress the Superbike set, however, the 121Nm of torque at 3000rpm paints a far more imposing picture of what this engine is all about. 3000rpm is effectively idling KIWI RIDER

I

had been gazing online at pictures of the promised Triumph Bobber for many weeks before I actually got to see one in the ‘flesh’. It punched buttons I had forgotten I had; the sort of ‘out of your league, but lucked in’ hot date anticipation of youth. Look, I know a Bobber should technically be a creation made in your shed, crafted over months, as you strip the bejesus out of some old stocker, and end up with something lightweight, rapid and cool-looking. It will take three

times as long as you thought, cost four times as much, and will necessitate a couple of trips to A&E for gashes, back sprain, and aluminium splinters in your eye. But it‘ll be yours, original, and you’ll have earned it. I get that. But my shed is full of the sort of equipment that precludes my dream of doing a welding course and building my own, and I knew (deep down) that it was never going to happen. And then Triumph did something miraculous; they built one. And it changed the game. True. They delivered something I

think is close to perfect for the aspirational owner. Not kidding. It just excites the eye. So when I rounded the corner of Brothers Beer Brew bar at 11 o’clock on a rain-threatened morning and saw the line up of four glistening Bobbers, my heart skipped a beat. Heidi Klum in lingerie, with a come-hither look and a toasted sandwich couldn’t have had more thrill. Beautiful. I don’t know what Triumph‘s designers are thinking these days, but keep giving them whatever they are on – it’s working. It took them three years to KIWI RIDER

When a company such as Honda makes an automatic bike, it’s worth taking a look. When the bike is Honda’s Africa Twin, it’s time to take notice.

T

he all new Africa Twin CRF1000L has been on dealers floors for over a year now but the the earthquake in Japan has made supply slow until recently. However, those who have been fortunate enough to ride or own one, have offered glowing praise for the new Honda. I was the lucky one from the KR team who got to ride the Africa Twin down the entire length of the South Island for its Australasian launch early last year. By the end of the ride I was completely sold on the new Honda, quite literally in fact - I put down my own cold hard cash on one. But, I had one problem and it wasn’t an easy decision... deciding on the clutch; manual machine or the automatic DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission)? In the end my familiarity with traditional gearboxes won through and I purchased a manual... after all, I’ve ridden a manual bike almost every day for over 40 years. Just recently I had the opportunity to ride the DCT version again, from Auckland to the Woodville Honda MXGP and back, going the long way. Now with over 2000km on a DCT, I’m less convinced than ever that I

bought the right model. But first up, the elephant in the room – or garage – as far as the DCT is concerned... weight. It is 14kg heavier than the 228kg base manual model, at a hefty 242kg of wet weight, although the base model has no ABS, TC or bashplate. The ABS/ TC manual model is 232kg wet and it has

a light-ish bashplate, as does the DCT. However, just looking at the DCT gearbox it doesn’t look 10kg different and, to be fair, it’s not because, admittedly, a small portion of that weight is the rear parking brake caliper and ancillaries. Importantly, most of the extra mass is carried very low and largely it’s centralised, so cannot

really be noticed when riding. Also, some of that mass is spinning in the gearbox and becomes part of the engine’s inertia – which has some real benefits... read on. Riding the DCT can be as simple and boring as thumbing the start button, then selecting ‘D’, for drive, with your right thumb, just like an automatic car, KIWI RIDER

Greenslade ready to go on the attack

A

s we went to press, Kiwi Rider tester Sam Greenslade had finished runner-up to the defending champion at the opening round of the New Zealand Crosscountry Championships near Dannevirke, in Central Hawke’s Bay, last month and he’s determined to continue applying pressure at round two near Mosgiel

on Sunday April 2. Taupo’s Brad Groombridge began his title defence in the best possible manner when he battled through traffic after a poor start at Dannevirke, eventually taking the race lead from Greenslade after just two laps and then going on to win the three-hour race by nearly two minutes from Greenslade, with Taupo’s Nathan Tesselaar finishing third. “Brad was just too quick

Story: Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com

for me at Dannevirke,” said Greenslade. But Greenslade has been working on his fitness, to ensure he’ll be able to sustain a higher pace at Mosgiel on Sunday and really give Groombridge something to think about. Greenslade raced two separate classes at the fourth and final round of the parallel New Zealand Motocross Championships in Taupo last

weekend, his plan being that this would help boost his strength and stamina for the cross-country series. “I raced over two hours of motocross on Saturday and, although my legs feel a bit sore today, I actually feel generally pretty good. I was a bit surprised I could race backto-back in two classes of such high intensity motocross. “Hopefully this boosts my fitness and I’ll have a few answers for Groombridge this coming weekend.” Greenslade finished 11th overall out of 40 riders in the MX2 (250cc) class at Taupo on Saturday and finished fourth overall out of 32 riders in the 125cc class as well. Meanwhile, Te Awamutu’s Daniel White won the 90-minute junior race at round one of the cross-country series, with Raglan’s Coby Rooks, Cambridge’s Seton Head, Hamilton’s Caleb Richardson and Cambridge’s Callum Paterson completing the top five. It will possibly be these same riders who again fight for junior honours over the weekend too, although Raglan’s defending national junior champion Logan Shaw should also be expected to feature near the front. Shaw had initially led the junior race at round one, before crashing to the sidelines. He’ll be determined to make amends. The series next heads to Marlborough for round three on April 30 and the final round is set for Cambridge on May 13. Points only for the best three of four rounds are counted, so riders will discard their worst result, ensuring the battle will probably go down to the wire.

See page 68 for coverage of the first round. KIWI RIDER

T

he weather gods resumed normal summer service for the 2017 Maramarua Classic Vinduro. As befitting an early March enduro the weather was fine, warm and dry, a stark contrast to the downpour of 2016. As a result the ground this year at Maramarua Forest was as hard as concrete. Greg Power marked a great Vinduro; a friendly course comprising two loops, one of 25 and another of 28 km. The Silver Grade rode one lap of each for a total of 53km, while the Gold riders repeated the first loop for a meaty 81km all up. The hard ground conditions, with plenty of braking and acceleration bumps – generated by the modern bikes that usually use these trails – made for demanding riding, especially for the older bikes with minimal suspension travel. This made the effort by Stephen Groves to win the Overall Gold Handicap and

the Classic Gold Class on his 1973 Honda XL350 all the more remarkable. Stephen added his win at Maramarua to podium rides at all rounds of the Vinduro NZ Series so far this season to lead the Overall Gold Handicap standings. Should he or the trusty XL stumble however at the final round at Kinleith on May 7 there are a gaggle of riders who can challenge him including John Refoy (Honda XR200), Mark Gray (Honda XR200) and Peter Scherer (Yamaha IT250). In the Silver Division Neil Hintz once again blasted his unique Kawasaki 350 Bighorn into the top spot and now also leads the Overall Silver Handicap and the Classic Silver Class. Again however, a mistake or mechanical drama in the final round could open the door for Brett Roberts (Kawasaki KLX 250) or David Vass (Suzkui PE250). With 75 riders so far fronting up at the Vinduro NZ Series this year, organisers are hoping for a good turnout at the final round in the Kinleith Forest near Tokoroa.

GROOMBRIDGE Not wasting any time

B

ay of Plenty’s Brad Groombridge is a glutton for punishment. The Suzuki rider from Taupo will be an extremely busy man again this season, the 26-year-old once more tackling three separate motorcycling codes and the pressure is on because he’s expected to win, or at

least do very well, in all of them. Always a top-10 contender in the MX1 class at the motocross nationals, Groombridge is also the defending national enduro champion and, in addition, he is the defending New Zealand crosscountry champion. The 2017 edition of the cross-country series kicked off in Central Hawke’s Bay in early March, with Groombridge quickly

to the fore again. This first of four rounds was being raced on a farmland course near Dannevirke and Groombridge wasted no time in pushing for the lead. “I had a terrible start, in about 40th position after the gun went off. The bike started first kick, but I was just a bit slow to get going,” he explained. “I was into the lead after about two laps. Each of those laps only took about

B

ut, in fact, all bets were off at the fourth and final round of the 2017 New Zealand Motocross Championships in Taupo in late March with virtually nothing to separate Cooper from his main title threat in the premier MX1 class. The Honda Racing Team star had led the national series from the start in Timaru in February and then embellished his position at the top with another solid performance at round two near Rotorua a fortnight later. But then Cooper lost his series lead for the first time at round three near Palmerston North two weeks before Taupo – slipping from 13 points in front to one point behind 2016 Australian MX1 champion Dean Ferris (Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team YZ450F). But Cooper was back to his scintillating best at Taupo, scoring a hat-trick of wins to dominate the day, re-taking

the lead from Ferris and clinching the championship title at the same time. It was Cooper’s fifth consecutive national MX1 title win and his sixth in total, adding to the two MX2 (250cc) titles he won in previous seasons, and it has reinforced the 33-year-old’s status again as the best motocross racer in New Zealand. Ferris was forced to withdraw from the final MX1 class race of the day at Taupo because of an electrical problem and this gave a huge points advantage to Cooper. But, by then, the damage had really already been done, with Cooper having won the first two races of the day to give himself a seven-point buffer even before the gate had dropped on that final race. A third placing or better in the final race would have been enough to hand the title to Cooper and his victory in that race, while Ferris failed to finish, was merely icing on the cake for the Kiwi hero. “I guess I offered Dean [Ferris] a chance to win the title when I gave up my 13-point advantage at [round three in] Palmerston

We wanted to see just how KTM’s counter-balanced two-stroke motocrossers handle a season of racing, so when Damon Nield, a keen privateer racing the 2017 NZ MX2 nationals on a standard KTM 250SX, said we could take it for a skid, well... Jock was all over it.

amon has competed in most forms of offroad racing, from extreme enduro to normal enduro, cross country and MX. Word is he was the youngest rider competing at the 2006 NZ ISDE in the Taupo area too. So, when we wanted to test ride a standard KTM 250SX which has had some real world use (think, constant caning) at the hands of a quick privateer and just normal routine maintenance...not an overly pampered factory-backed bike that is basically new each time it hits the start line – Damo’s machine drew the short straw... cheers mate. Damon practices on and races the same machine, it had almost 20 hours on the clock when we threw a leg over it. The first thing I noticed when riding off is that it doesn’t feel brand new anymore. The new counter-balanced two-stroke KTM engine is exceptionally smooth when new, but with 20 hours of hard labour, a few vibes had sneaked in to the system on this machine. To be fair, it was still smoother than a non-counter-balanced engine, but that almost uncanny, silky smoothness of new was gone. The power is still crisp and the delivery of the smooth, quite gutsy variety... it will haul third gear in quite slow turns and the clutch doesn’t necessarily need a huge workout to go quick. It pulls in a reasonably linear fashion with little of the ‘hit’ from a power band that I would expect from a 250 two-stroke... perhaps I’m just showing my age here? Up top, at high revs, it’s a little flat and to some extent the whole power delivery has a ‘brisk’ enduro motor feel to it. However, and don’t get me wrong, it is still fast, easy to ride and possibly, more importantly, very tractable. If you could turn back the clock, I don’t think this engine is as fast up top as a fresh 1992 Honda CR250R (a very strong engine in its day) and doesn’t have the punch either. But, it is way more tractable and much easier and less tiring to ride. Yes, twostroke engines have improved in the last 25 years but not that much. I have ridden other current model KTM 250 smokers that have benefited hugely from an aftermarket chamber and muffler – they really unleash the hidden top-end without sacrificing the excellent lower rpm power. The suspension is great on Damon’s machine and even though I’m a good 20kg heavier than he is when suited up, it remained quite bottom resistant. When pushing hard the suspension seems at its best and reasonably plush, doing KIWI RIDER

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Bailey_MAY17.indd 1 29/03/17 3:10 PM Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US....
