The origins of IKEA’s boldest collection ever

Today, for the first time ever, more people live in cities than in the countryside.

They move more often and live in smaller spaces. But they still dream of a beautiful, functional home that perfectly fits their lives. And perhaps most importantly, they have less money to spend.

These global insights have inspired the IKEA PS 2014 collection. “We’ve chosen to devise a series of products that offer cutting-edge design that remains affordable.”, says Peter Klinkert, Project Manager for the IKEA PS collections. ®

The IKEA PS 2014 collection doesn’t include any core functional pieces such as sofas or beds. Rather, it reponds to the way young people live by focusing on design that you can move around and use in different ways.

“These are multifunctional designer objects that involve us in the design conversation, depending on where we place them and how we use them.”

Collective design The IKEA PS 2014 collection targets creative young urbanites. Therefore, it was important that it was designed by the very same creative young urbanites.

And to truly make the collection gloabally relevant it was essential that the creative team included designers from every corner of the globe. A team of designers were chosen - all of them young in mind. They then worked with IKEA’s own inhouse designers to bring IKEA PS 2014 to life.

“We had two large workshops. The whole collection is very much a ‘we-design’, a team effort. There was no sitting at home designing a product on your own. A IKEA PS collection is not the brain brainchild of just one person. The idea of the celebrated solitary designer is quite obsolete”, says Peter Klinkert, Project Manager for the IKEA PS 2014 collection. In the end a total of 200 people worked on the project.

Once the first prototypes were ready, 15 design students from Copenhagen were invited to come and give feedback. Were the products truly relevant to the lifestyle? If they weren’t, they were discarded. Out of 150 proposed products around 50 survived.

The result is the IKEA PS 2014 collection. A design response to modern living.

“I wanted to make simple things to help people with their everyday lives. My clothes hangers don’t need to be installed and you can move them wherever you need them. The little tree with the mirror is for keeping track of those small, important things like your watch, wallet and phone. The corner sofa embraces you like an armchair and gives you the comfort of a sofa. Somewhere to snuggle into that uses an otherwise wasted corner.”

“The inspiration for the pendant lamp came from science fiction and video games. The main idea is that the customer can change the shape of the lamp shade and the light output by pulling the string.

The workstation is a place to charge your cell phones, pads, laptops and other electronic equipment. The idea of the design was to combine modern functions with the traditional shape of a pedestal.

I also wanted to create a product that makes is easy to furnish with plants at home. You can use the plant stands either on the balcony or indoors.”

“The IKEA PS 2014 greenhouse was inspired by the alpine chalets of my Swiss homeland - a symbol of simplicity and harmony with nature. It can fit on the balcony, in the kitchen or next to the window. It can stand on a table or be hung on the wall. And one side is open and the other closed so you can regulate the temperature.”

“For the IKEA PS 2014 dining table my intention was to create something that provided an important stage for peoples’ everyday lives. A place to work, cook, gather around - a table to live with.

“In wintertime in Sweden we use something called a “kick” to get around. It is a form of sled that you use on ice. I have made a bench with very short skids that can stand nicely on the lawn. It looks like a kick, but it’s a kick bench.”

“I have designed two pieces both of which I would describe as open.

The wardrobe is a piece that is free from codes. It can be placed anywhere and due to its camouflage it adapts to any kind of home furnishing. It plays with what´s hidden and what´s revealed and it allows you to create your own design.

The tray is an object made for creating. It celebrates the diversity of life and the way it expresses itself differently from culture to culture. It is an object that allows us to travel and helps us appreciate the traditions that bring new dimensions to our lives.”

“The idea started with me thinking about the modern equivalent of the fireplace - the place where people meet in the home, and for me that was the kitchen table. I tried to define a surface in the center of things where you can collect and display notes and messages the way we do on the refrigerator door.

I started sketching pendant lamps over the table using different ideas and materials. The “clip” pattern was an idea that had both a function and an expression, as it threw light in a pattern. We started working on different functions and ended up adapting the idea to a floor lamp where the pattern and expression came to be the point.”

“A simple wooden box is one of the most basic and yet most functional storage solutions. By eliminating three of the six sides that create it, while maintaining all eight of its edge corners we reduce the amount of material by half but still retain all its stacking and most of its containing abilities.

The PS rail system was inspired by the kamoi - a wooden rail that runs around the perimeter of the rooms in traditional Japanese houses. Its main function is to hold the sliding doors and walls, but it also provides a ledge where small objects can be stored and clothes hung”

“I was inspired by traveling in Eastern Europe, where I found rural homes with walls covered with textiles, floors with painted tiles, and mirrors decorated with stained glass foil. The carefully structured decorations inspired me to make a grid, in which I could use various lines and colors to create different patterns.

The PS mirror, rugs, and cushions are all based on the exact same grid, but use different colors and repetitions to create new visual stories.”

Wrangle those clothes, not your creativity The IKEA PS 2014 wardrobe takes wardrobes to a place they’ve never been before. No longer just a mundane storage item, they are now a means of self-expression!

The IKEA PS 2014 wardrobe includes 160 plastic “pixels” in black, red, yellow, orange and green, together with a nylon bag to store them in. This lets you create your own designs on the frame. Use a few, a lot or none at all. It’s up to you. Instructions for making three ready-made patterns are included.

On the balcony, by the window, on the wall The IKEA PS 2014 greenhouse makes any space just that little bit greener. Available in orange and white, it is a sort of mini-orangery that can hold three plant pots. And one side is open and the other closed so you can regulate the temperature. In cold weather the open side is put against the wall. In warm weather, it can be turned so the open side faces out. You can use it alone or in pairs and still control the temperature by placing them front-to-front or back-to- back. And they can be hung on the wall using the heart shaped hole.

Time to dress up the place The IKEA PS 2014 clocks are more than purely practical time pieces. For example, the wall clocks are minimalistic, but with a poetic twist. The large hand is screen printed onto a transparent, patterned disc that revolves. The idea is that the clocks become an ornament for your home, just like a watch can be an ornament for your body.
