Welcome from the race Director Dear Athletes, Welcome to the 25th annual Austin Marathon and Half Marathon®, presented by NXP and the Paramount Break-a-Leg 5K. For over two decades, more than 175,000 runners from around the globe have earned the distinction of becoming a finisher of the Austin Marathon or Half Marathon. This year, we welcome a field of over 15,000 runners to our starting line on Sunday, February 14, for what we hope will be a memorable day of energy, effort and accomplishment. Over half of our participants come from outside the Austin metro-area, with all 50-states and over 25 foreign countries represented, marking Austin as an annual destination for runners. A study conducted last year by Austin’s St. Edwards University showed that such an influx of visiting runners generated over $18.8 million dollars for the local economy, making this event one of the top economic engines in a city known for world-class special events. Starting and finishing within the shadow of the Texas State Capitol on historic Congress Avenue, runners will enjoy a running tour of historic Austin, lively downtown, Lady Bird Lake, and the trendy SoCo district, as well as the scenic Hyde Park neighborhood and the sprawling University of Texas at Austin campus. Throughout our challenging and beautiful course, hardworking volunteers from 28 different Austin non-profits from our ‘Austin GiveSmiles’ project will be working from start to finish, offering encouragement, water and Gatorade®. And in keeping with Austin’s reputation as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” you’ll be entertained and inspired by over 30 local bands and musicians all along the route, and a dozen local street musicians at the finish line. The Austin Marathon and Half Marathon also boasts one of the few marathons to have a contingent of aerial drones at the finish line from GirlStart programs as part of NXP’s ongoing support of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) under the auspices of the NXP Foundation. Our other valuable and loyal friends and partners from SETON Healthcare Family, H-E-B grocery stores, BBVA Compass, GEICO and Gatorade make up the backbone of our event and I am grateful for their continued support. We are also excited and inspired to host a competitive field of elite athletes attempting to break our looped course records of 2:14.02 and 2:36.26, but whether you are running to win, qualify for Boston or simply finish, run smart and finish strong. Running a marathon is not always about race day, but is often more about the tremendous commitment and drive to make it to the starting line. Now you are here. The hard work is finished. The goal is in reach. Your accomplishment this weekend is a testament to all of the long runs on cold mornings, as well as the support you received from friends and loved ones who were with you every step of the way to the starting line. On behalf of our sponsors and the thousands of volunteers and staff who made this day possible, I wish you all the best of luck and strength to make this your day of pride.

WELCOME FROM NXP CEO Dear Participants, On behalf of NXP Semiconductors, I want to welcome you to the 2016 Austin Marathon and Half Marathon and thank you for your participation. I hope it will be an exhilarating, enriching life experience for you. We at NXP are very proud to be the presenting sponsor of this year’s race. As you may know, NXP recently merged with Freescale Semiconductor, proudly becoming one of the foremost technology providers in the world. And if you’ve been in Austin for a few years, you’ll remember that Freescale (previously Motorola) helped create the marathon event in 1991 and continued as the title sponsor through 2006. With approximately 5,000 employees residing in the Austin community, we’ve had a strong presence here for over 50 years. I’m proud to report that, at last year’s race, we had the largest group of people involved in the event (as runners, volunteers, cheerleaders – you name it). This year, we hope to surpass that record! At NXP, we enable secure connections for a smarter world. Our technology is in every new car and almost every smartphone. We enable things like transport ticketing, mobile and bank payments – from smart solutions in your home and your city as well as providing the supporting infrastructure that links it all in a secure way – making our lives easier, better and safer. What does that mean to you? Well, thinking of your race today, you’re probably using a wearable device – a smart watch perhaps – to track your running speed, distance, and heart rate to help you reach your marathon goals. If you use a Garmin Forerunner® watch, for example, there’s an NXP chip inside enabling those smart features. Just as our technology helps foster tomorrow’s innovations, NXP believes that the future really depends on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experts to help us create a better world. This year, NXP has partnered with Austin-based nonprofit Girlstart to support girls’ enrichment programs. The proceeds we raise during the marathon will help support Girlstart’s innovative, nationally-recognized STEM education programs and enable the organization to bring high-quality STEM education to thousands of fourth and fifth-grade girls in Central Texas and communities nationwide. Congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard to make the 2016 Austin Marathon and Half Marathon a world-class event. Good luck on race day!
Rick Clemmer President and CEO, NXP

Through our ever-expanding Education and Outreach Programs, we are able to bring about 22,000 children to the theatres for free or at greatly reduced costs – children that otherwise would not be able to experience the joy and excitement of attending a live theatrical performance. One of our education programs, Literacy to Life enables 3rd grade student writers to see their words transformed into live performances for their own school. We are grateful and amazed to have our fellow Central Texans participating in this event and are also thrilled to welcome those from out-of-town – we know you’ll enjoy your stay in Austin! 2016 DaviD Doolittle MeMorial Cup awarDeD to Gary l. walker ii
every year, the Austin Marathon and half Marathon® presents thousands of awards to participants, volunteers and sponsors. from the coveted winner’s trophy to the finisher’s medal to the treasured age-group awards, the Austin Marathon recognizes achievement in its many forms. The highest honor awarded by the Austin Marathon is the David Doolittle Memorial cup. named for the late founder of the Austin Marathon, David Doolittle, the Doolittle cup is awarded to a person who has demonstrated the ideals that David himself exemplified in his lifetime. As the Vice President of human resources at Motorola and a lifetime runner, David valued personal commitment, community involvement, family and running. But above all, David placed a high value on a sense of purpose and being a ‘force for good’. Gary is pictured in the top right.
The highest honor awarded by the Austin Marathon organizing team is the David Doolittle Memorial Cup. Named for the late founder of the Austin Marathon, the Doolittle Cup is awarded to a person who has demonstrated the ideals that David himself exemplified in his lifetime.
Past recipients of the Doolittle Cup include running luminaries like the founder of the St. James Missions 5K, the Reverend Robert Clemons, Marathon Kids® founder Kay Morris, former Austin Fit coach Debra Saleny and US Air Force fighter pilot, Maj. Phillip “Snag” Johnston, who organized an Austin Marathon ‘satellite run’ in an active combat zone in Afghanistan and Brain Power 5K race director and cancer survivor, Kelly Bollinger. This year’s recipient personifies compassion and a deep sense of purpose and personal commitment to the Austin community. Gary L. Walker II may be better known to many as a talented and highly acclaimed special effects designer and producer who has contributed to the success of numerous major motion-pictures including Academy Award-winning “Apollo-13” (1995), Sundance Film Festival award winner “Teeth” (2008), “Spy Kids-2: The Island of Lost Dreams” (2002), “Free Willy-3” (1997), “Jumping Off Bridges” (2005) and more recently, “The Party is Over” and “Harbinger” (2015). What may be less well-known is that Gary is also an accomplished marathoner who shares his expertise and love of marathon running by coaching others through his “Team FX” to benefit the Austin Children’s Shelter. For nearly 11 years, Gary has been an ambassador of the sport and personally mentored over 220 runners to reach the finish line of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. He recruits sponsors. He organizes meeting locations. He scouts training run courses. He motivates and inspires. He helps runners through the highs and lows that are part of every runner’s journey. Along the way, Team FX, has quietly raised over $271,000 to help the shelter in accomplishing its mission. Gary has proven himself to be a truly great coach and a tireless fundraiser and deeply committed advocate for Austin’s battered, abused and neglected children and their families. His remarkable ability to rally others to his cause on behalf of the Austin Children’s Shelter has brought the shelter’s important work into sharp focus and brings great credit to him, Team FX and the entire Austin community. The Organizing Committee of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon is proud to recognize Gary L. Walker II, as the most worthy recipient of the 2016 Doolittle Memorial Cup and he will be recognized at a pre-race reception and again on race day.
