Planning is More Than Half the Fun Possibilities abound when you sit down to plan. Whether a family vacation or a far off endurance race, the armchair general in all of us comes out when we map out where we want to be in the future.

I am no exception. Every year my family sits down at the table to plan vacations for the coming months or, if we are really on top of it, big-ticket holidays further down the road. Sorting through the endless possibilities––plane trips, hotels, pools and activities––I can’t help but imagine the culmination of my work ending in the perfect vacation where trouble stays back at home and I don’t have to worry about things like lost bags, delays and silly travel stress arguments.

I have a similar feeling at the beginning of each endurance season. While Chicago may still be a winter wonderland, as the days fall off of my new calendar I get that same itch, that same vacation planning excitement, when I start picking and planning for the races and events I will undertake in the coming months.

My regular roster of events includes the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in the spring and the Leaning Tower Y Tri to get in the water and onto the bike. But outside of those yearly traditions, I thumb through the very event guide you now hold in your eager hands (or see on your screen––our issues are, of course, gratis at mychicagoathlete.com) and start planning.

My analysis, like yours, probably starts with my current conditioning and training needs. How long will I need to get half marathon ready? Can I dedicate 18 weeks to training or will my summer conflicts hold me back? Then I shift focus to my wants. Should I up my distance? Maybe I should focus on running after a summer of cycling? I was swimming to get stronger in the triathlon—maybe I should throw a triathlon in there somewhere?

In the end, a large portion of my enjoyment of endurance sports stems from opening this guide every year. Planning for possibilities, training for those possibilities and making those possibilities a reality––the yearly story arc of every endurance athlete. Actual races are a sweet reward for the planning and hard dedication to training. Virtually every endurance athlete I’ve spoken with in my career views race day as a victory lap, a symbol of the months and years of training they’ve put their bodies through. I’m no different, though I also admit that since I hit my 50s, that victory lap has sweetened with ample age group placings. A humble brag and also my reward for being old.

With more endurance events to choose from than ever before (and tirelessly accounted for in the pages to follow), I invite you to challenge yourself and try something new. Be optimistic, but realistic. Forget about your lost luggage and stress arguments for a minute and plan to make memories.

Runners often experience a number of seemingly unrelated problems that come and go creating pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion.

Those problems could be: • Plantar Fasciitis, Patellar Tendonitis • Shin Splints, IT-Band Syndrome • Piriformis Syndrome, Hip Tightness • Low Back pain, Neck/Shoulder Pain • Chronic Hamstring Tightness Are these different names for the same problem? The overlooked fact is that these problems often have the same underlying cause—a foot-knee-hip imbalance.

Running involves a repeated weight transfer from one leg to the other that requires the foot, knee and hip to maintain consistent alignment.

During the single leg stance, if the arch or knee collapses or if the hips tilt to one side, there will be repetitive stress transmitted throughout the body that can cause any of the symptoms listed above.

Readiness to Run Assessment The Step-Down Assessment determines if the problem is at the feet, knees or hips and predicts the likelihood that a running injury or symptom will occur. When performing this assessment, concentrate on one area at a time (foot, knee, hip). It is useful to have someone take a picture or video of you performing this assessment.

Stand on a slightly elevated surface with your feet under your hips. The knee of the stance leg will bend slightly as you reach the foot of the non-weight bearing leg down towards the ground.

The foot of the reaching leg will point down, hovering above the ground. It is best to perform this assessment barefoot to observe the position of the foot. Here is what you should look for: 1 FOOT: The foot of the stance leg should be pointing straight forward.

Note if the arch collapses in or rolls out during the assessment.

If you were unable to maintain a neutral arch, keep the knee in line with the foot and maintain level hips throughout the full movement—your foot-knee-hip alignment is off and running is likely to produce symptoms.

Injury Free Running Foot-knee-hip weakness or misalignment is responsible for many conditions that can be chronic and difficult to manage clinically without a full understanding of the factors involved. This explains why just treating plantar fasciitis or IT- band syndrome doesn’t fully address the causative factors.

A Seventh and eighth grade.

A Four-time Olympic gold medalist Lasse Viren.

Q who was your favorite running coach and why?

A Coach Patrick Savage at Oakton College because he introduced me to the marathon.

Q Your most memorable race?

A Boston Marathon, 1984: My PB and I almost qualified for the Olympic Trials, missing by a few seconds.

Q what’s your most memorable run?

A Running in -15 degree F with a wind chill of -40 degrees. My Dutch friend, Humphrey, wanted to turn around but we kept going. My parent’s sauna felt great afterwards.

Q what was your proudest accomplishment?

A Boston Marathon 1984, PB: 2:19, 24th place overall.

Q Did you ever meet anyone famous at Boston?

A Yes, Bill Rodgers in his own running store.

A Not being able to run as fast as I used to.

Q where was your favorite place to train?

A Des Plaines River Trail in the Cook County Forest Preserves. Many good runs and memories there.

Q Your parents are also runners.

How many marathons have your mother and father competed?

A Mother: Eeva Kallio, 24 marathons; 3:59 best time - Lake County Marathon. Father: Reijo Kallio, 20 marathons; 3:38 best time - Chicago Marathon.

Q Do you plan to come out of retirement, and if not, why?

A What retirement? I still run and then a take a sauna!

Q Is there anything else you would like to add?

A I don’t like living in the past. I like to keep moving forward. That’s why I don’t run marathons anymore!
