ndurance sports, in general, require little explaining. The straightforward nature of events that follow the basic rule, “Run, swim or pedal until you cross the finish line,” makes it easy for just about anyone to participate. But what
if you want to step up your game and cross that finish line faster and stronger than ever before? You could solicit the advice of fellow athletes or maybe consult Google to see what the Internet has to say and hope that you have the discipline and ability to keep up with what you find. Or, if you want a personalized plan tailored to your specific needs, you could look into hiring a coach. While coaching may seem like something intended for top tier athletes, anyone can benefit from having a personal coach. As Chris Lewis explains on page 30, coaching helps bring out the best in athletes of all abilities. Whether you aspire to be an elite runner, are happy to simply participate and do your best or have a tricky schedule, you can find a coach that will work well for you.

endurance preparation as well. Patrick Lyons walks us through the importance of working with a sports nutritionist on page 36. Think you have what it takes to actually become a coach? Nearly all of the major endurance sports governing bodies, such as USA Triathlon or USA Track & Field, have their own processes for certifying coaches to ensure athletes get the best education possible. For those interested in becoming a coach, Chris Russ reveals the process on page 34.

USA Triathlon
Introduces Age-Group Mixed Team Relay Series
U
SA Triathlon recently announced that it has selected five events to form the inaugural USA Triathlon Mixed Team Relay (MTR) Series in 2014. Though this will be the first year for the MTR Series, USA Triathlon has hosted a Mixed Team Relay at its Youth and Junior National Championships since 2010 and at its Collegiate Nationals since 2012. The mixed team relay format, introduced by the International Triathlon Union in 2009, features teams made of two men and two women. During the MTR Series, relay teams will compete on a super sprint triathlon course. Each athlete will swim 100-150 meters, bike 6-8 kilometers and run 1-1.5 kilometers and all team members will complete each discipline together before moving on to the next segment. “We’re launching the Mixed Team Relay Series to capture social energy and offer a unique race option to athletes who are looking for new ways to participate in the multisport lifestyle,” Rob Urbach, USA Triathlon CEO, said in a press release. “The mixed team relay format is a great way for friends, families, co-workers and teammates to share a dynamic experience, and we look forward to expanding the reach of the series in the future.”

STEVEN BUGARIN
Running has been a way of life for Steven Bugarin since he was young. As the only runner for his high school cross country team he earned a scholarship to run in college. He now coaches track and cross country at St. Ignatius College Prep all while racking up some impressive finishes of his own. Bugarin said 2014 has been a strange start to the running year for him. While he has finished at or towards the top in all of his races, his times haven’t quite been what he wanted partially because of the cold weather. The 28 year old started off his racing year with the F^3 Lake Half Marathon and finished in third place overall. He made up for it in his next race and won a late duel at the REM-Fit Pulaski 10K where he battled back and forth for the back half a race that wasn’t decided until the final half mile. Later this year, Bugarin plans to run the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K and hopes to top the PR he set last year. His second major race for 2014 will be the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October where he is looking for a time in the low 2:30s.

Emily Jurlina started running on a whim when she joined her high school track and field team. She went on to run with the Loyola University Club Cross Country team and joined the Universal Sole team after graduation. Jurlina’s year started off with the F^3 Lake Half Marathon where she finished ninth and followed the January race with the Chi Town Big Game 10K and a second place finish in 42:00 flat. Recently, Jurlina dueled it out at the inaugural Charles “Peanut” Tillman 5K and finished as the second woman in 20:49. Jurlina keeps her race schedule busy and is in the process of completing one marathon in every state. So far, Jurlina has run marathons in nine states and intends to take at least two more off the board this year after competing in marathons in Minneapolis and Nashville. Jurlina likes to run all of the Universal Sole races with her teammates but is always looking for additional races that appeal to her. However, her favorite distance will always be the marathon. “There is just something about marathon running that, to me, is just so honest. It’s just you and your legs, no bike, no pool, it’s just you,” Jurlina says. “It’s been a big part of my life for the last four years. I can’t imagine not training for something.”

Ryan Komlertkul chArITy: Run foR ALS
In a healthy body, motor neurons send impulses to muscle fibers, enabling voluntary muscle movement. This movement not only allows us to go about our daily tasks with ease, but also keeps our muscles strong. In an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patient, though, motor neurons cannot do their job. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, leads to degeneration of motor neurons, which prevents muscles from receiving the impulses they need to move and results in muscle atrophy.
and soon after ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon for the Les Turner ALS Foundation’s Run with ALS. In 2013, Komlertkul took on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for Run for ALS.
While Komlertkul isn’t sure if he will run another marathon this year, he does hope to continue to take on new endurance challenges with a triathlon in 2014.
“The [Bank of America Chicago Marathon] was more rewarding than I expected it to be,” Komlertkul says. “It was hard. Someone had told me once when you run a marathon, you can expect to go through every emotion you can imagine, and I’d say that was a very accurate statement.”
“A friend of mine has been trying to drag me into the Naperville Tri, which would be a good starter triathlon,” Komlertkul says. “I’d like to do the Chicago Triathlon, starting with the sprint there and seeing how that goes, maybe ramp that up to an Olympic and hopefully try a half Ironman.”
In December 2011, Ryan Komlertkul’s mother was diagnosed with ALS. Shortly after her diagnosis, he knew he wanted to raise awareness for the relatively rare disease, and when he received a packet of information from a social worker at the Les Turner/ Lois Insolia ALS Center at Northwestern, he found a way to make that happen.
As he had done for Strike Out ALS and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon, Komlertkul put together a team of friends for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Though three members had to drop out due to injuries, Komlertkul and six other friends successfully completed the same training schedule and the marathon itself last October.
Though his mother’s diagnosis spurred on Komlertkul’s participation in endurance sports, it had an even greater impact on the way he lives his dayto-day life now.
“One of the pamphlets had to do with the Run for ALS team,” Komlertkul says. “It really triggered the idea of running a race that summer for my mom and in her honor but also to fundraise for that foundation and hopefully find a cure, too.”
“I didn’t really have a marathon on my radar,” Komlertkul says. “I had been to watch and thought it would be wonderful to run one but I had had injuries I thought would hold me back from running a marathon. When I talked with those friends about the idea of possibly running a marathon they all signed up and were on board right away. It was a great journey.”
Seven months after his mom’s diagnosis, Komlertkul took part in Strike Out ALS at U.S. Cellular Field 24
april 2014
MyChiCAgoAthLEtE.CoM
“For me personally I think it really put a lot of things into perspective in regards to what’s important in life,” Komlertkul says. “Not that I was way out there in left field but it really makes you appreciate what we have, just the daily things that we probably take for granted when ALS really strips you of things that you can take for granted, like the ability to walk, use your hands, speak or swallow. For me, I really enjoy so many more simple things more than I ever have before, even if it’s just a nice simple meal.”

One of the reasons the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon is rated one of the Midwest’s best races is because our course is fast! You should expect great times at our event. Pleasant Prairie is a great area and Prairie Springs Park is amazing. Lake Andrea is a spring-fed, clean inland lake typically as smooth as glass with delightful water temperatures. Our bike and run courses are primarily flat with limited curves. Plus you bike in a beautiful country setting with an inside the park scenic run around Lake Andrea. Bike Racing Options for Junior Riders While just about every kid loves to ride a bike, some show the inclination to be a little more serious about speed. If you know a kid like this, here are some options to consider. Equipment Before you do anything, make sure that your child has a safe, well-maintained bike. Go to your local bike shop and get a tune up. Buy your child’s bike from a bike shop rather than secondhand or from a discount store. Make sure that your child fits properly on the bike. A child will not be able to safely mount, dismount or control a bike that is too big. Smaller hands need specially sized brake levers and shifters. Most kids start out with a mountain type bike. If your child is a proficient cyclist and would like to be faster, several bike companies make good junior sized road bikes. Make sure that your child wears a new helmet. You should replace any helmets that have suffered impact in a crash. Before every ride, no matter how short, require your child to buckle on his or her helmet and wear yours as well. Bike gloves will save some skin if the rider hits the ground. Bike shorts are more comfortable for serious riders as well as less likely to get caught on the bike seat. Safety Safe places to ride, especially with speed, are difficult to find. Bike trails are generally vehicle free, but there are other potential dangers like geese, road crossings and conflicts with pedestrians. If you ride on a bike trail, teach your young rider proper trail etiquette. Ride right, ride single file, slow down for other trail users, announce that you are “passing on the left,” and say “thank you” after passing.
By: Chris Palmquist
When riding on roads, ride with your child. Riding behind your young rider gives them control over the ride pace and you more control over their safety. Again, teach rules and etiquette. Stop at all stop signs. Ride single file. Teach them verbal signals and hand signals to indicate speed changes, stops or road conditions. Wear bright shirts for visibility. Racing options American Bicycle Racing off ers racing options for riders aged 10 and older. See www.ambikerace.com for an extensive racing calendar. An annual racing license for juniors aged 18 and under is just $10 per year. Racing categories for juniors are generally 1014 and 15-18. Junior racing fees range from free to $15 depending on the event. In April, young riders can try a time trial on April 6 at the ABD Maple Park John Fraser Time Trial or on April 13 in Cherry Valley. Future criterium racers can participate in the beginner ABD practice crits on Wednesday nights in West Chicago (see www.abdcycling.com for more information). private CoaChes PRovIDE A STRUCTURED training plan tailored to your speCifiC running goals. TRAININg PLANS SHoULD always be Challenging, yET realistiC AND aChievable. Whether you are an experienced runner or a beginner interested in improving your endurance and consistency, you can benefit from hiring a private coach. Dozens of private coaches call the Chicago area home, and through their training can help you improve your fitness, increase your stamina and surpass your goals on a short- and long-term basis. But how can you find a coach suitable for you? Depending on your skill level, what benefits can you expect from a private coach? What if you can’t hire a private coach for the time being? What alternatives to one-on-one coaching exist that you can consider? According to Mike Norman of Chicago Endurance Sports, Megan Sullivan of the Chicago Area Runners Association and Brendan Cournane, a Chicago area running coach, private coaching benefits athletes for the following reasons:
tion and recovery,” says Rick Wemple of CoachUp, a service that connects athletes with private coaches. “By having multiple coaches, runners can maintain their elite statuses for years to come.” Having guidance can give elite athletes the edge they need to overcome other obstacles such as mental struggles. “Sports psychologists are extremely helpful for many athletes, who often underperform due to negative self-talk,” Wemple says. “Also, nutritionists can help elite, national-caliber runners transition to the next level: the international stage.” But what if you can’t hire multiple coaches? Cournane suggests hiring a private coach who personally works with psychologists, nutritionists and other professionals. In doing so, they can assist you in other capacities aside from coaching as they receive backup support from other specialists.
Structure. Private coaches provide a structured training plan tailored to your specific running goals. Training plans should always be challenging, yet realistic and achievable.
Modification . Coaches can also help you modify your training, especially if you encounter injuries or illnesses that require substantial recovery time, or your fitness, endurance and performance improves over time leading you to adjust your training goals.
Feedback. By working with a private coach, runners receive valuable feedback as they discuss their strengths and weaknesses, brainstorm new training methods and achieve their goals in a timelier manner than they would if they had trained on their own. Accountability. Private coaches provide structured training plans and hold runners accountable to the plan, constantly motivating them to exceed their own expectations even if they are tired, nervous or lacking confidence. Sport-specific skills. Coaches also oversee a runner’s execution of drills
and exercises, as well as his or her form and sport-specific skills that some runners can’t manage alone.
CoaChing options for elite, professional athletes
If you’re an elite, professional runner, you should consider hiring a private coach that works with experts in fields like nutrition, sports psychology and strength to help you discover your potential and further improve your performances. “In the last 10 years, training groups have formed around the country to address elite runners’ complete needs: running, psychology, strength, nutri-
At the same time, coaches that train elite runners will maintain weekly workout schedules that include cross training, speed, strength and tempo workouts and long runs, providing balance for their athletes. “The coach monitors the results of each workout, as well as athletes’ physiological changes, while also modifying the intensity level, the length of workouts and aggregate mileage, more so than with ‘average’ runners,” Cournane says. In addition, if runners are competitive but not yet considered elite, they should also train with a private coach, while also running with athletes that are more advanced than they are. “Competitive runners can gain strong technical and interpersonal support by training with elite athletes, whether they compete locally or nationally,” Bill Leach, a Chicago area running coach, says. Why should average runners hire coaches?
Let’s face it: the majority of runners are “average.” They will never win a local or national marathon. Should they even bother hiring a coach? Is it worth the time and money? According to Chicagoland endurance coaches, experts and athletes, private coaching, even for average runners, is worth the time and money required. Consider the following:
Multitasking. Since average runners don’t earn their living by compet-
32
“If you’re just out there running the same route at the same pace all the time, you won’t see much improvement,” Norman says. “A coach can give you valuable tips on running form, while also challenging you with different workouts designed to help you improve.”
Motivation and recovery. By having coaches monitor their workouts, average runners will feel more compelled to train and to complete their workouts. Such motivation should not be understated. “Also, if runners get sick or are injured, coaches can help them get back on track with their training in a safe way,” Norman says.
ing in races, they’ll have a lot of commitments away from the track or field, from family responsibilities to full-time jobs. Coaches help average runners maximize the time they have to train by creating personalized and structured training schedules.
With this in mind, if you are indeed an average runner, you may now be more curious about the private coaching options available in the Chicago area. Who should you contact in order to find a coach?
“All runners need to do is follow the training plans that their coaches have developed and then communicate their training performances with them, so that coaches can make any necessary adjustments to their training to help them progress towards their goals,” Norman says.
Groups and associations. Groups like USA Track and Field and the Road Runners Club of America maintain lists of certified coaches. The Chicago Area Runners Association also provides runners their own personal, Chicago-based coaches.
Advanced performance. By improving their techniques and receiving consistent yet progressive training, average runners can advance their skills considerably.
Referrals. “Many coaches are known in the community and are re-

camaraderie ANd motivation. Sometimes athletes just want to track their own performances or record their times on the Internet. They may even prefer to train alone and only communicate with coaches online whenever they have questions or requests. “A lot of online users have higher expectations of success, even if they aren’t in the ‘elite’ level,” Norman says. “They may have limited time to train, so they want to maximize every minute by having coaches analyze their workouts and constantly make adjustments.” To find reliable online coaches, runners can use the following resources:
Meanwhile, if you are interested in advancing your skills but aren’t sure if private coaching is your best option, consider joining running groups, which provide camaraderie and motivation. “Some people just need the motivation of running with other people and can improve by running with a group of athletes that are either at their level or slightly faster,” Norman says. “Runners, like all humans, seem to be very social beings that almost always benefit from running with a group,” Leach says. “They tend to be appropriately stimulated, especially when they train with a compatible group, which helps them improve their results.”
Another option to consider: online coAching
Runners have a variety of responsibilities that affect their training and performances. At times, these responsibilities may even lead them to consider an entirely different coaching option aside from personal interaction: online coaching. “Our stable of online coaching participants includes a full spectrum, from beginners to runners that are trying to qualify for Boston, or even win races,” says Greg McMillan of McMillan Running, an online resource for distance runners. “Some of these athletes either live in ar-
Word of mouth . Talk to other athletes and see which types of online coaching options they utilize. Talk with online coaches and see how they respond to your questions and requests. Also consider whether or not they understand (and can help you achieve) your goals in a timely fashion. Groups and websites. In addition to groups such as USA Track and Field and the Road Runners Club of America, which offer lists of certified coaches, CoachUp is a credible resource for Chicagoland runners, as it connects them with nearby private coaches. By enrolling in an online coaching program, runners will likely notice the following benefits, whether they are elite or average athletes:
Everything in perspective. “An online coach can help put workouts and training in perspective,” says Jeff Gaudette of RunnersConnect, a community of coaches that provide training plans to athletes. “If runners want to run through an injury, coaches can hold them back and keep them focused on the long-term.” Priceless conversations. “Since you will probably have some bad workouts during your training, having a coach to share your concerns and fears with, even if you only communicate online, is priceless,” Gaudette says. Good planning. “By having a well-planned out training strategy, you
will accomplish your goals sooner than you imagined – and run faster than you ever thought possible,” Gaudette says. MyChICAGOAThLeTe.COM

How to
Become an
Endurance BY CHRIS RUSS
|
pHOTOS BY ALI ENGIN
Coaches are usually pretty easy to spot on race day. They’re the ones nervously jogging from check-point to check-point, stopwatch in hand. But it takes a lot more than a stopwatch to make a good endurance coach. There is no one path to becoming an endurance coach. Sometimes, former athletes want to share the experience they’ve gained through years of training. Other times, someone with a wealth of academic knowledge in physiology and nutrition is looking to apply what they’ve learned. Other coaches got to where they are by using a natural knack for leadership and an ability to bring out the best in people. 34

First, you need to determine if this is the right field for you. “It takes the desire to always want to help your athletes become better,” Kevin Dessart, director of coaching education and athlete development for USA Cycling, says. “Coaches all come from different backgrounds: some are science based, some are personal experience based, some are recreational based.” Dessart earned a degree in athletic administration and worked for three NHL teams before changing his career focus to endurance sports coaching. Bobby McGee, a performance advisor for USA Triathlon emphasized that a unique kind of mentality is required in order to excel as a coach. “I think a good endurance coach is pretty much a jack of all trades,” McGee says. “You have to be a mom, you have to be a dad, you have to be a physiotherapist, you have to be a massage therapist, you have to be a leader and then you also have to be a scientist and you have to be an artist as well.” McGee grew up in South Africa and began his career as a high school teacher who coached the school’s track and cross country teams. While he was still teaching high school, he got a small job working with a running club at a nearby college which gave him the opportunity to work with university athletes and professional middle-distance runners. His coaching career took off from there and when South Africa rejoined the Olympics after apartheid ended, he was invited to coach the South African marathon team. Randy Accetta is an example of an endurance coach whose competitive history helped to lead him into a coaching career. Randy is the director of coaching education for the Road Runners Club of America. He ran cross country and track at Wesleyan University, ran the U.S. Olympic Trials for the marathon and also competed in a season of track meets throughout Europe. “Having been a competitive runner can be super-helpful but it’s not a guarantee of success as a coach,” Accetta says. “I think that good coaches don’t have to be talented runners. I’d say in fact that you probably can’t be a good coach if you’re still being a competitive runner because it’s too hard to focus on yourself and your athletes.” Accetta also spends his time teaching entrepreneurship at the College of Management at the University of Arizona. Accetta says that the majority of endurance coaches work as volunteers or part-time coaches and that it’s rare to make a living entirely by being a coach. Cari Setzler is an RRCA Coaching Instructor who also leads a dual career. “I am also a veterinarian. In undergraduate I was a collegiate athlete and I started coaching then,” Setzler says. “I actually coached some at a junior college while I was in veterinary school. And then I’ve continued both coaching and veterinary medicine into my professional career.”
specialized training. The RRCA’s certification program pertains to recreational runners, 5Ks, half marathons, marathons and ultra marathons. Just as there is no one type of person who becomes an endurance coach, there is no one way to begin an endurance coaching career. However, new coaches often get their start through volunteer opportunities. “Generally you’ll start as a volunteer and then you’ll take on more leadership roles,” Setzler says. “A lot of clubs and a lot of different organizations are looking for great volunteers and great leaders to help with their programs.” You can also enter the field by signing on with a training company who will assign you clients. James Herrera is a BMX coach for USA Cycling who took an internship with a start-up endurance coaching company after earning his master’s degree in exercise physiology. Herrera went on to become director of coaching for the company. “It certainly can help to start your journey working for a company who assigns you clients,” Herrera says. “This takes the leg work and financial investment out of it for a new coach with regards to marketing and advertising. It also offers the opportunity to work with a lot of clients in a relatively short period of time.” New coaches could also establish their own coaching company. This can be a daunting undertaking but it can provide coaches with the opportunity to set their own schedule and quickly put their coaching philosophy into practice. “Coaches also need to be well aware, if they start their own company, the administrative side will consist of 50 percent of your time. This is something most coaches don’t realize and can cause a bit of distress if they are not prepared for it,” Dessart says. “It’s all about networking and marketing. It’s talking with local shops, teams, being at races, talking to others on group rides.” For all of the practical considerations of working to become an endurance coach, it all really seems to come down to the joy that comes from helping people better themselves. “There are few careers that are as rewarding. You don’t see a lot of individuals that become coaches that aren’t lifetime coaches,” McGee says. “You are working with people that are taking time out of their lives. These individuals are giving of their aspirations and dreams to you to develop. So it’s an immensely gratifying job.”
Just as her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is an essential part of her career as a veterinarian, Setzler holds a number of endurance coaching certifications that are an essential part of her career as a coach. There are a variety of certifications that aspiring endurance coaches should look into depending on the kind of coach a person hopes to become. The RRCA, USA Track and Field and USA Triathlon offer some of the most widely recognized endurance sports certifications. “For me the different coaching certifications that I have reflect the different types of coaching that I do,” Setzler says. “It all depends on what your interest is. If I’m going to teach something new, I want to make sure that I’ve got a good background of information in order to do well by my students.” Setzler received a USATF Level 1 certification in order to help with a junior high track and field program. She has also earned a USATF Level 2 endurance certification and an RRCA certification to prepare her for her work with adult runners. Level 1 USATF certifications are general certifications for track coaches, and a variety of Level 2 programs offer coaches more MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

NutritioN ExpErts to Achieve PeAk PerformAnce

With fad diets, supplement companies and celebrity trainers providing different opinions on what constitutes “healthy eating,” it’s sometimes difficult for athletes to make confident nutrition decisions. Working with a registered dietitian, though, can help athletes sift through the confusion.
“I feel a lot better and I haven’t gotten sick since I started working with Amy,” he says, “and I’m now confident in my nutrition. I don’t have to devote an hour a week to looking up new stuff, and I have that resource that I can always go to in order to keep improving.”
A registered dietician holds a degree in nutrition, completed an internship and is licensed with the state. They also keep continuing education hours throughout the year to stay up to date on the latest research.
For some athletes, proper nutrition is an issue of quantity rather than quality.
It is important to find a dietician who specializes in sports nutrition, says Monique Ryan, a sports nutritionist and author of “Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes.” “Find someone who has actual qualifications and a certification in Sports Dietetics,” Ryan says. “Nutritionists specialize just like physicians specialize and you definitely want someone that has that unique experience.” A sports nutritionist needs to understand that an athlete’s life involves different training cycles that all require different nutrition, Ryan says. “I often work with athletes through the entire season and adjust their program as we go through different cycles,” Ryan says. “I do plans for training, pre-competition and race day itself, so I really take people through the whole gambit.” This kind of specialized attention is what one can expect from a good sports nutritionist says Amy Baltes, a Chicago-area registered sports dietician. “The majority of what I do is one-on-one counseling,” Baltes says. “We go through the goals or objectives and then we create a plan that works best for them. I also do cooking demos, take people through grocery stores and do in-home cooking lessons.” Tim Glinski, 28, is a triathlete who always had “work with a nutritionist” on his list of things he would do in his perfect training scenario, alongside “upgrade his bike” and “get weekly massages.” When he saw the results his fellow athletes who visited nutritionists had, he decided to give Baltes a visit. “The best and worst part of going to a nutritionist is that you realize all of the stuff that you are doing that was dumb,” Glinski says. “You thought you were eating healthy, but it just turns out that you have been lying to yourself for so long.”
“People don’t realize how much to eat for the training they are actually doing,” Ryan says. “They might be worried about losing body fat, and I can incorporate that into the sessions, but they might not eat enough for increased training and recovery.” If an athlete eats even a few hundred calories below his or her daily requirement for an extended period time, it can result in poor recovery and eventually lead to imbalanced hormones, Ryan says. Studies done on female athletes eating at a deficit have shown low estrogen levels which can halt the development of good bone mass or actually decrease bone mass, as well as cause irregular or missed periods. Similar studies have not yet been conducted on male athletes, but it is possible that they also suffer similar negative effects. A dietitian can also help athletes stay active even when a doctor may have recommended spending time on the sidelines due to digestive trouble. Mary Bradbury, a highly accomplished triathlete and coach and a several-time qualifier for the World Triathlon Championships, began having stomach issues later in her career. “In my twenties I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted, and then in my late thirties, usually during my run, my stomach would just start to get really upset,” Bradbury says. “It was usually after a race and for two or three years I just let it go.” Eventually the pain and upset stomach worsened and began to affect Bradbury’s race performance. Her doctor diagnosed her with ischemic colitis, a condition causing inflammation in the large intestine. “I had an old school doctor, so he is very cautious and conservative,” Bradbury says. “He had me tearing up for a few months, saying he wanted me to train less.” Frustrated, Bradbury turned to Baltes. Baltes used an elimination diet, which consisted of dropping all possible trigger foods from Bradbury’s diet and added them back in one by one.
Baltes assessed Glinski’s diet and fitness goals and created a plan specifically for him. She set general nutrition goals, not unlike the goals an athlete might set in his or her training, and got rid of the vitamins and protein shakes in his diet, instead focusing on whole foods for fuel.
“It actually turned out to be dairy products. If I had dairy within 24 hours of running that was the cause,” Bradbury says. “I ate a lot of yogurt, a lot of cottage cheese and cereal four times a week, but if I didn’t eat it within 24 hours of a run I would be fine.”
“I really like that she had different goals to hit, like now I have to eat seven to 10 servings of vegetables a day compared to my one or maybe two previously,” Glinski says. “And now I don’t eat anything with certain ingredients like hydrogenated oils and modified cornstarch.”
Bradbury is now training and coaching with no problems and stresses the difference solid nutrition can make to her clients.
Glinski says he has noticed a difference since he began working with Baltes.
“You spend all this money on equipment but if you don’t have the engine to go with it it’s kind of pointless,” Bradbury says. “You have to take care of the engine first and then everything else comes after that.” MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

Q How did you become interested in triathlons? A It’s one of those things: my friends were doing
it in 1989. At that time, I was a basketball player back in Israel and three of my friends were doing triathlons. I thought it would be interesting since I hated running, but triathlon would be a good thing because it has a variety of sports. I didn’t train, just showed up for four or five races in the first few years. After a couple years I took a break. I came to Chicago and did my masters in physiology and exercise science. In 1997 I needed to make a change. I was overweight, overqualified and under paid for my job. I decided that an Ironman would be a great solution for that problem. I raced my first Kona Ironman in ’98 and found an amazing sponsor that worked with me for six years. I always say that my sponsor got me through what I call my “PhD program.” During these six years I raced Kona three times and did four other Ironman races and many shorter races. 2002 was my last sponsored year. While racing I founded Well-Fit Triathlon and Training and was also coaching individual athletes and small groups. I started the first cycling class on bike trainers back in ’99 using small rooms and underground basements. Since then I have climbed up the coaching ranks to become a [USAT] Level III coach. At Well-Fit we focus on providing what athletes need and help make people faster. I don’t think anyone wants to get slower. Human potential is a lot bigger than what people show you or are willing to tell you. My goal as a coach is to get that potential out. 62

MyChICagOaThLeTe.COM
Q What else is involved in becoming a triathlon coach? A Every year, there is traveling to two to four locations, working with and listening to other coaches coach. There’s also the USAT symposium and other coaching seminars, traveling to California and helping with talent development camps and to Colorado to work with the resident team. It involves a lot of learning and experimenting. It’s an amazing experience. The coaching I got during the time I was an athlete was from the best back then which was a group of coaches in San Diego. There are a lot more options for training now and in different ways and you have to pick and choose. Just remember that “new” does not always mean “better.” I believe to be a good coach you have to have a wide range of knowledge. In other countries, programs won’t let you be a coach if you don’t have a degree in the field. I think USAT is doing a really good job raising the bar in the certification process. Q What do you do as a triathlon coach? A As a coach, the challenge is balancing training
in three different sports. A running coach, a swim coach or a bike coach might not understand how we put things together. That’s one aspect of the answer. The other aspect is that triathlon coaches have their own traditions, which sometimes are triathlon based, but they have to go back and learn from the swim, bike and run coaches. It’s required and never too late. In the last six months, I’ve been
mentored by one of the greatest run coaches in the world. You have to continuously evolve and learn new things. In the beginning, you copy what other people do, then you develop your own coaching methods and philosophy, add in new information and tweak things based on previous experience, and that’s how you evolve as a coach. You can be a program writer or a coach. As a program writer you get the information from your athlete and you write the plan based on that information. A coach uses the training plan as one of the tools to coach an athlete. Hands-on interaction with athletes is key in my coaching style and what makes the difference. Once or twice a week you actually meet your clients for a session. They come into the training center, do a drill session or video tape analysis or endurance efficiency test. This is where coaching is being done. Q How have you seen coaching benefit your athletes? A The interaction, the guidance: a good coach should be just as good as a good lawyer or doctor. I offer quality guidance and sometimes hold them back, sometimes push them forward and make them believe in themselves. I’m a very straight forward coach. I’m going to tell you things the way they are. There are different ways to do things and I’ve noticed a lot of people do the right thing. Proper “fit” between an athlete and a coach is crucial to achieving maximum potential.
