T

riathlon, to the uninitiated, can come across as an intimidating and insular sport. The gear, the terminology, the fact that you have to complete three disciplines in one event: a triathlon requires much more thought and preparation than a casual weekend 5K fun run. Despite the inherent fear factor, the Chicago Triathlon in particular makes the sport welcoming to newcomers. This year, the Chicago Triathlon underwent many changes, including the addition of a new Divvy wave to Saturday’s SuperSprint triathlon, incorporating Chicago’s popular bike share system into one of the best races around to experience triathlon for the first time. Chicago Triathlon changes won’t only impact SuperSprinters, though. Sprint and International distance racers will enjoy a new start sequence and more accommodations in relation to the transition area, and International distance competitors will also experience biking on roads usually reserved for vehicular traffic. For all the details, be sure to check out Emily Stone’s article on page 28. The Chicago Triathlon draws incredible talent to the lakefront, including members of one of the most prestigious paratriathlon clubs in the country, dare2tri. This local club boasts many of the top paratriathletes in the country as members and has made an incredible impression on the sport of paratriathlon in general. Chris Lewis writes about the history and programming of the club on page 32. Athletes, whether planning to compete in three disciplines or not, generally have one major goal during race season: stay healthy. Unfortunately for many of us, injuries pop up from time to time, and for those training for fall races, aches and pains may start to set in right around now. Nipping an injury in the bud often allows you to make it to the start line of your target event, but at what point do you need to seek medical attention, and what should you do if you do get injured before your race? Kate Bongiovanni consulted with several local physical therapists and doctors for advice, and you can read about her findings on page 38.

he Warriors Running Group began as just that: a running group initiated by Joseph Sobus a few years ago with a small collection of athletes in an area of Chicago without many running clubs. Today, the group has grown to encompass much more than just athletics. Though primarily a running organization, the Warriors Running Group features two outreach programs: the Little Warriors Running Group and an internship program, both designed to provide low income youth with productive physical and creative outlets. “In certain areas, there are no summer programs that are free,” Sobus says. “There are summer camps, but they still have to pay. A lot of parents in the city: everyone’s kind of hurting for cash.” To fill that need, the Little Warriors Running Group provides children between the ages of 8 and 12 with a six-week training program at little to no cost. Through sponsorship donations, children enrolled in the Peace Program or Proyecto Juventud through Mujeres Latinas en Acción receive gym shoes, team shirts and registration and transportation to the Spartan Kids Race on Sept. 27 for free, while children of active Warrior Running Group members can enroll their children at a reduced cost. With its internship program, the Warriors Running Group aims to give students, particularly those who did not secure summer employment through One

Interns create shirt designs and profit from gear sales featuring their designs. “We’re hoping to expand [One Summer Chicago] into a better model where people will be interested in supporting young kids, especially when every dollar goes into their pocket,” Sobus says. Of course, the core of the Warriors Running Group still revolves around running. The group has five tribes that meet in Pilsen, Cicero, Bensenville, Midway and Portage Park at various times throughout the week and provides its members with professionally designed training programs and access to medical experts from Sports and Ortho Physical Therapy. In addition, it recently opened the WRG Box, a gym featuring TRX Suspension Training at 6277 S. Kolin near Midway International Airport, to provide members with a unique cross training opportunity. The group welcomes runners of all levels, from novice to advanced and prides itself on the wide range of members it attracts. “Sometimes when you go to running clubs you see young people or a lot of guys in their 30s,” Sobus says. “We have a lot of diversity. We’re a minority-owned business embracing more diversity and achieving it.” To learn more about the Warriors Running Group, including meeting times and locations, visit www.wrgrun.com.

CRAZY DOES TM

James akita

James Akita began his running career in sixth grade and he continues to grow in the sport. After running track in college, Akita turned his focus to marathons in his mid-20s. This year, he added the CARA Runners Choice Circuit to his marathon training, and it couldn’t be going any better. Adding many race to his calendar makes things tricky at times, but Akita welcomes the challenge. Through the Elmhurst Running Club 4 on the 4th, Akita had a 26-point lead in the circuit, thanks to dominating performances at the Roselle Run for the Roses and the Downers Grove 5 Mile in June. With eight races left on the circuit, Akita says he knows he will have to keep up the strong finishes. While he will still keep racing the CARA Circuit, the 33-year-old hasn’t lost track of his main focus, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, where he hopes to run a sub-2:26.

Separately, training for a triathlon and raising young children take a significant amount of time. Finding time to do both may sound like a challenging balancing act, but you wouldn’t know it by Jennifer Garrison’s race results. Since mid-May, Garrison has won two triathlons and had a third place finish in the Age Group Olympic-Distance race at the ITU World Triathlon Chicago. Even with these impressive accomplishments, Garrison says that she has had to tone down her training and competing now that she has two young children. The 36-year-old won the Galena Triathlon and her hometown race, the Athleta Esprit De She Naperville Triathlon. The Naperville Triathlon was the first multisport race Garrison ever competed in when she was 18. Garrison still has two big races on her immediate horizon this year. She plans to compete in the USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee and later will take on the Chicago Triathlon.

The races hold particular importance this year as they serve as the qualifier for the 2015 International Triathlon Union Short Course Triathlon World Championship and ITU Sprint Course Triathlon World Championship, both of which will take place in Chicago. Each age group has 18 Team USA slots available, with slots rolling down to 25th place after the age-up rule, which awards different results to individuals who will age-up into a new age group for 2015. These ageup results determine a person’s qualification for Team USA. For more information on both national championship events, visit www.usatriathlon.org.

Racine Teens Compete in Ironman 70.3 To Raise Awareness for Substance Abuse Prevention

W

atching everyday people compete in endurance sports can inspire even those with no previous experience in running, cycling or swimming to give it a try. This inspiration came over David Barreto and Alonzo Sandoval while volunteering along the bike course at Ironman 70.3 Racine in 2013. Barreto and Sandoval, upcoming high school seniors at the time, approached Jason Meekma, co-founder of the sTRIve Triathlon Club, to ask for his help training them for Ironman 70.3 Racine in 2014, but Meekma’s skepticism got the best of him. “You know high school kids always get crazy ideas,” Meekma says. “They had just volunteered for [Ironman 70.3 Racine] and came to me caught up in the moment. They thought it’d be cool because they saw everyone do it.”

18

says. “It would be 24/7, we had to train and take advice and stay committed: do what we say and do what he says.”

VAD wouldn’t have to sit out any races due to prohibitive costs, for which all three are extremely grateful.

Last October, the three—collectively known as VAD—started training, balancing jobs and their last years of high school with their first-ever triathlon training cycle, including twice-weekly 5:30 a.m. swims before school.

“All their race registrations, all their gear has been because of donations people have made,” Meekma says. “It’s been heartwarming to know the community rallied around these guys. The boys have raised over $1000 on their own for this, but with other people coming through, it’s really just been so amazing in how this all came together.”

“I understand why there are a lot of triathletes in their 30s after they’ve settled down a little more,” Sandoval says “It’s hard to balance but I gained this love for the sport.” Throughout training, VAD competed in several races, including their first triathlons. The three took on the International distance for the first time at the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon on June 22.

Meekma suggested they wait and think about it some more, but Barreto and Sandoval persisted, drawing in a third area high school senior, Victor Huarota. When the three came back to Meekma, he struck them a deal.

“It was really awesome to be able to compete and actually race,” Barreto says of the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon. “I’ve never had that experience before at that long of distance. Seeing everyone with their bikes and giving it all and racing: I found it really fun.”

“He said he’d help us train and be a coach to us, but we had to take this as almost a job,” Huarota

Triathlons do come with a hefty price tag, but the local triathlon community in Racine made sure

In addition to competing, VAD also hopes to raise awareness and funds for substance abuse prevention programming. “I know a lot of teens who are really into things they probably shouldn’t be into,” Barreto says. “I want to help raise awareness for prevention of substance and alcohol abuse. You don’t have to be doing that. If you took the opportunity to not do it, this is what you could be accomplishing.” On July 20, all three finished Ironman 70.3 Racine. Sandoval had the fastest finishing time of VAD, completing the race in 5:36:31. Barreto and Huarota followed in 5:42:04 and 6:58:55, respectively. In August, they plan to take on the sprint distance race at the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon.

Chicago Cyclocross SEriES PrEviEW

By Bryan McVey

With the summer road cycling season fully underway, it’s a great time to start gearing up for the approaching fall cyclocross campaign. Thirteen races in and around Chicago fill the 2014 schedule, with venues catering to everyone from the seasoned racer to first time participants and superfans looking for a fun outdoor party atmosphere. Starting in 2004, the Chicago Cyclocross Cup (Chi Cross Cup) has grown substantially, with some of its biggest surges in rider participation over the last few years. Racing and riding your bike outside quickly becomes less fun and more of a chore when the weather makes a turn for the worse, but in cyclocross, riders relish in the gritty conditions that often come with racing late into the fall. While typically for road racing you need more time on the bike and lots of open space to train, you can prepare for cyclocross in any condition, making it ideal for Chicagoans. Races consist of short punching bursts of speed, an abundance of handling and 20

august/september 2014

Mychicagoathlete.coM

technical skills and shorter race lengths, so you can train in a variety of ways. If you are thinking of competing in a race or the whole series, keep the following in mind: Equipment: Pick a good tire! The right bike will help a lot, but the right tires (and pressure) will help even more. Avoid bike frames that only have clearance for 23 (skinny) tires. A proper cyclocross frame will accommodate wider treaded tires (28-33) with additional room for mud from a wet course. Training: Mix it up! Cyclocross started as a cross training discipline of cycling. Running, lifting and intervals on the bike will help you navigate the courses quickly. Don’t overlook the importance of cornering and handling ability as well, as some courses literally involve hundreds of turns throughout the duration of a race. A second saved through each one will add up to a lot of time by the finish line.

Logistics: Plan a routine! This means get to the course early and prepare for anything. Don’t overlook the importance of pre-riding a course, as they change from year to year and even by the hour as earlier races alter the feel of the soil and may create mud and slick spots on the course. Weather conditions may change quickly in the fall, so bring a rain jacket and a change of clothes for after the race. Spectating: Have fun! Plenty of races take place throughout the day to watch. Feel free to heckle (in good fun) and stick around for the peak of the party atmosphere later in the day with the category 4 and 4/5 races. There are usually plenty of food carts and concessions present with good refreshments. Beer and bike racing never went so well together. Check out more information at chicrosscup.com for each day’s specific race information, including race times, registration and more.

October race. Though Spagnola never had the chance to see Pekala run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, he hopes that wearing a bib with her name will inspire others in the same way charity runners in the past have inspired him. “I love seeing bibs and signage on runners,” Pekala says. “It’s so motivating. People know the main ones, but you see all the small ones and think, ‘Man, there’s a lot of nice people really trying to help people out.’” Though Pekala has never run for charity before, he had no trouble with fundraising, surpassing the $1,000 minimum requirement and hitting his goal back in February. He does have a time goal for this year’s race as well, but ultimately sees running for Team Diabetes as his top priority for the marathon. “I’ve run enough where it was really for me,” he says. “It still is a goal to break four hours, but I’m really going to try to do it for this cause and do it for my mother-in-law. It feels like the right thing to do, to start running and continue running for a cause.” The fact that Pekala intends to use this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon to honor Spagnola ref lects a greater theme in Pekala’s running career. Family often intersects with his running, as shown by his regular participation in the MMRF Race for Research, which he and his daughter first ran in 2009 on behalf of his wife, who had multiple myeloma. Some of his long-term running plans involve family as well.

Charity: teaM Diabetes

When Neal Pekala runs the Bank of america Chicago Marathon this October, he’ll take one of his biggest fans along with him. Pekala’s mother-in-law, Eleanor Spagnola, strongly supported his running career, asking about races and encouraging him to run faster throughout his training. When Spagnola passed away last November after a struggle with diabetes, Pekala knew he wanted to honor her memory, but didn’t know the best way to go about it. The restructured registration process for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon offered him the perfect way to combine his passion for running with his desire to honor his mother-in-law. 22

“I love to run and I wanted to do something,” Pekala says. “I couldn’t think of what to do for my mother-in-law, and with the changes to the [Bank of America Chicago Marathon], we thought, ‘Is there a diabetes group I could team up with?’ I found a Chicago chapter of the American Diabetes Association Team D, met [associate manager of fundraising and administration for the ADA] Claire Griffith, and from that point on Claire couldn’t have made it any easier.” Like many other charity runners, Pekala created a special bib in memory of Spagnola that he’s run with all year and plans to wear during the

“My daughter’s running a little bit, and she loves Disney, so I said, ‘Listen, if you get to the point where you really like it, I’ll make you a deal. If you are diligent enough, I’ll take you to Anaheim and we can do the Disneyland Half Marathon. If you’re really diligent, I’ll take you to Disney World and do the annual full marathon,’” Pekala says. “She’s not quite there yet, but I think that’s a pretty good incentive for her. I’d love to start running with her.” Pekala may be relatively new to the running scene—he ran his first marathon in 2010— but he thinks his quick progress shows the accessibility of the sport. “I’m 51 now,” Pekala says. “If I can do it literally out of nowhere, anyone can do it. I think that’s why running has taken off the way it has. If you’ve got good knees and your feet are okay, you can do it.”

Dealing with Competition Anxiety

By: Chris Palmquist

Participation in a competitive sport can be a wonderful experience for kids. Even so, most kids experience real fear or anxiety before a competition. As parents and coaches, we can help our kids learn to effectively deal with these fears. Fear is Normal As your child gets older, more aware and more invested in performing well, they will likely notice some pre-race fears. At this point, as parents we should teach them that this gives them that special energy on competition day. At the same time, we need to provide them with some skills for managing these strange feelings: • Teach them breathing techniques. With five slow exhales, they can focus on relaxing five different parts of their body. • Guide them through some visualization. Visualize positive outcomes like scoring a goal, running across a finish line or hitting a three pointer. Also visualize how the child can deal with some competition challenges like missing a point, getting a flat tire in a triathlon or working through some cramps. • Simplify their goal to one simple, controllable objective. For example, “Your goal today is to run with a quicker cadence,” or “kick strongly,” or “stay close to a certain player.” Coax them away from goals such as getting first place, scoring four baskets or winning the game. Nervous parents make kids more anxious Children can sense your nervousness and in turn

feel more anxious themselves. To help create an appearance of calm even when nervous, parents can try relaxation techniques like massage, extra sleep, deep breathing and increasing their distance from the game or race. If a parent cannot portray a calm image, consider not attending the competition. Things that help Get to the competition early and well rested. Check that you have all the necessary equipment. Do race simulations in practice and study the course ahead of time. Speak very carefully to your athlete before an important competition. Say things like, “I love to watch you race/ compete/play,” “I am proud of you,” and “I love you.” Leave the coaching to the coach. Teach them a routine that encourages appreciativeness. One triathlete that I know goes through this with his dad on race morning: Dad asks, “What do you get to do today?” The triathlete replies, “I get to race a triathlon!” This puts a smile on their faces and puts the day in perspective for everyone. What if they aren’t anxious? If your child is happy, relaxed and seems even alarmingly unfocused before a game or a race, don’t try to change anything. You want to keep this wonderful scenario going for as many years as you can. To these kids, a competition extends playing, and that is absolutely right. Once the game or race starts, they will snap into an age-appropriate level of focus.

cARA Youth ciRcuit PRovides oPPoRtunitY foR comPetition As road racing grows, so do distances offered at events. While many races pair a longer distance event with a shorter option—half marathon and 5K, full marathon and half marathon—events looking to cater to families often incorporate kid-appropriate distances as well. While some kids may enjoy simply participating in a race, others like the competition aspect. For those who fall into the latter category, the Chicago Area Runners Association offers a version of its popular Runners Choice Circuit tailored to youngsters. Started in 2012, the CARA Youth Circuit includes nine races throughout the year with distances ranging from 0.6K (.37 miles) to 4.1 miles at races in and around Chicago. Children 12 and under can compete for a year-end prize handed out at CARA’s annual Awards Banquet in February. “We try to mix up the race distances so there is a variety to choose from for different age groups,” Matt Perez, road race services and volunteer coordinator for CARA, says. In order to qualify for year-end awards, a child must run at least four of the nine races offered on the circuit and have a CARA membership, which, for anyone 22 or younger, costs $15 annually. The CARA Runners Choice Circuit tends to draw repeat runners actively working to place high on the circuit, and to some extent this applies to children running the Youth Circuit as well. “I’ve noticed that the kids in the younger age groups (8 and under, 9-10) tend to come back from year to year, unlike the older age group (11-12),” Perez says. “However the program has only been around for a couple of years so there has not been a lot of time to build those loyal youth runners.” Though at the moment many participants fall in by chance, Perez hopes that over time, the Youth Circuit will grow to a similar—albeit younger—competition to the Runners Choice Circuit. “I want kids to set out to run the Circuit and view it as something more than what it is,” Perez says. “It could be a great competitive Circuit that kids use to have fun, network with other runners and even prep for high school competition. I want our retention rate to be much higher as the program grows, and I want the kids in the Chicagoland area to build a long lasting relationship with CARA and our mission to serve their community.” Three events, including the 1K at the Schaumburg Shuffle on Sept. 1, remain on the CARA Youth Circuit for 2014. To learn more about the circuit, visit cararuns.org.

n e w C o u r s e , n e w s Ta r T s e q u e n C e , new wave and More On June 5, Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, in partnership with the City of Chicago, announced major changes for the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon presented by Toyota. This 32-year-old event will bring 9,000 athletes to the Chicago lakefront on Aug. 22 and 23 and will feature a revamped bike course, a different start sequence and a brand new Divvy wave, among other improvements. The biggest change made to this year’s triathlon comes to the International distance bike course. As the first major course change in 18 years, the new bike route takes athletes up Lake Shore Drive, down Lower Wacker Drive and through the McCormick Place Busway. In past years, the bike course consisted of two loops on Lake Shore Drive. “Congestion is why we changed the bike course,” Scott Hutmacher, regional marketing manager of the Chicago Triathlon, says.

Now, with the changes made to ease congestion, the elongated route limits ridership on Lake Shore Drive. “Athletes benefit from use of new, fully-closed, über-fast roadways,” Hutmacher says. “The ITU race proved the worthiness of Lower Wacker Drive as a cyclist’s personal Autobahn.” The Chicago Triathlon also made changes to the start sequence of Sunday’s races. The professional race will take off first at 6 a.m. followed by the International distance race. Sprint racers will have the last start of the day at 9 a.m. The change to have the pros start first creates less congestion and an open gap for the International race participants, allowing the sprint distance participants to follow earlier and avoid overheating. In addition to having the pros start the race first, the 2014 Chicago Triathlon also features redesigned transition area entrances and exits to allow for quicker transition times. Athletes in Sunday’s Sprint and International distance races now have the option to check in their bikes on Saturday to the DuSable Harbor transition area, which will include overnight security to keep equipment safe. Placards will help athletes find their rack assignments, increasing transition area organization. All these changes allow flexible transition access hours on race day. Athletes with later race times can check in while others race, and those who started earlier can pick up their belongings from the transition area while the race is still happening. Along with individual competitions, the 2014 Chicago Triathlon will host two team events. The Chicago Triathlon Team Challenge program, which had 35 teams participate last year, allows non-elite participants in Sunday’s races to compete against each other in a team format. In addition, the Chicago Triathlon will host the USA Triathlon Club National Championships for age-group clubs in Super Sprint, Sprint and International distance races across five divisions based on club size. Elite and Paratriathlon athletes registered with a USAT club can also score points for their respective clubs in their waves. USAT will award almost $9,000 to the top teams across the races. Saturday’s SuperSprint triathlon, long championed as an ideal way to test the waters of triathlon, becomes even more first-timer friendly this year with the inclusion of a new Divvy Wave. This 100-participant wave will introduce athletes who may be interested but intimidated by triathlons to the sport. This new race category features the same 375-meter swim, 10K bike and a 2.5K run as the regular SuperSprint. Divvy Wave participants get to use a Divvy bike, compete for special Divvy trophies and receive an 8-week training program, coaching from Life Time Tri-certified coaches and other gift items such as a 24-hour Divvy pass.

“The Chicago Triathlon worked with the marketplace, educating them, letting them break down those barriers,” Hutmacher says of adding of the Divvy Wave and incorporating the use of Divvy bikes into the race.

“It’s evolutionary to try to change our race, and we are very community based,” Hutmacher says. “If you know how to cycle in an urban environment like this, consider the sport of triathlon.”

The addition of Divvy bikes into the 2014 Chicago Triathlon allows those who want to participate but don’t have a bike or don’t want to buy one to be a triathlete for the day. According to Divvy General Manager Elliot Greenberger, the partnership has already generated a significant amount of positive feedback.

Though triathlon may seem intimidating to outsiders, in reality it is a welcoming and inclusive sport and race.

“It’s important for the public to see who Divvy is,” Greenberger says. “Hopefully, people will be talking about it, and people talking about it will turn into people being curious and trying it out.”

In particular, he notes many have anxiety surrounding the swimming event. To that end, the Chicago Triathlon hosts swim clinics. Over the course of the summer, the event offers six swim clinics at the Ohio Street Beach, allowing participants to experience swimming in Lake Michigan before the race. Approximately 33 percent of participants are first time athletes.

Although the Divvy bikes do weigh 43 pounds, making them a bit slower, individuals competing in the Divvy Wave only compete against each other, eliminating any disadvantage due to the bike’s speed or design. The Divvy bike has three gears, an adjustable seat, a low step-through frame that makes it easy to get on and off, rear fender guards to protect from mud and puddles and front and rear lights. The bike’s design allows a variety of people to use it in a new and interesting way, which is one of the goals of the Divvy Wave. “You get 100 blue bikes competing against each other,” Greenberger says. “It’s a fun sight.”

“One of the biggest challenges we face as an organization,” Hutmacher says, “is getting people to commit to the race, suit up and enter the water.”

With all these changes to the Chicago Triathlon weekend, athletes must attend a mandatory 30-minute presentation at the Hilton Chicago, the host hotel, during the Multisport & Fitness Expo. Athletes will need to show a wristband to prove they attended the presentation. “Ultimately, this is a different experience,” Hutmacher says. “This is now the world’s premier triathlon.”

Believe it or not, no USA Triathlon-sanctioned paratriathlon club existed in the United States until Chicago’s very own dare2tri broke the mold in January 2011. Created by three friends who shared a passion for adaptive sports and a vision to provide opportunities for athletes with disabilities to change their lifestyles, dare2tri did not begin with the intent to serve the hundreds of people that currently participate in the club’s practices, camps, clinics and races. In fact, co-founders Keri Serota, Dan Tun and Melissa Stockwell only expected the club to have 10 members at most.

But word quickly spread within and outside of the greater Chicago area after the club formed partnerships with the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association and the Chicago Park District. Before long, athletes ages 6 to 71 traveled from all around Illinois as well as southern Wisconsin to compete in paratriathlons, develop individualized training plans under the guidance of certified coaches and fulfill their personal fitness goals.

“Dare2tri is now one of the largest programs in the country recruiting, training and serving paratriathletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments.” 32

“Dare2tri is now one of the largest programs in the country recruiting, training and serving paratriathletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments,” Serota, executive director of dare2tri, says. Athletes of all experience levels can become club members completely free of charge. A well-versed trainer of athletes with disabilities, USAT Level 1 certified coach Stacee Seay oversees more experienced club members that comprise dare2tri’s Elite Team. Elite Team members have participated in Paratriathlon National and World Championships, where some have won gold, silver and bronze medals. Young athletes can also further advance their triathlon skills while participating in the annual two-day Kids Paratriathlon Training Camp, available for children and young adults ages 6 to 21, whether or not they have previous triathlon experience or belong to dare2tri. Held in July at Chicago’s 63rd Street Beach, the camp offers a variety of clinics, ranging from cycling and open water swimming to nutrition and transition. “One of my favorite aspects of dare2tri is being able to mentor kids with disabilities,” Brian Norberg, a dare2tri member and volunteer, says. “I really enjoy giving them advice and seeing them improve as the camp progresses.” Furthermore, to honor former service members, including co-founder Stockwell, an above-the-knee amputee who previously served the nation in the Iraq War and received a Purple Heart, dare2tri strives to pique veterans’ interests in triathlons in hopes of helping them lead healthy, active lives in spite of their injuries and consequent disabilities. “Each of dare2tri’s coaches show athletes what they can still do, even with physical disabilities,” Stockwell, also a USAT Level I certified coach, says. “Whether they are seeking swimming, biking, or running advice and assistance, our coaches will work with them and help them cross the finish lines of their future triathlons.”

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATHLETES OF ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS Novice and intermediate club members also have access, either online or in person, to individualized training plans initiated and overseen by dare2tri coaches. Novice plans introduce members to the overall triathlon training process, typically lasting from four to eight hours per week. Intermediate plans, on the other hand, provide experienced triathletes more time to train and condition, often for eight to 12 hours a week. Dare2tri offers its members two training sessions each week throughout the year, including summertime bike and run (or push racing) practices at 31st Street Harbor and open water swims at Ohio Street Beach, as well as wintertime pool and gym practices. “Most of the swim and bike training is very low impact, so it’s a great way for anyone wanting to become physically active to begin their triathlon training regimens,” Norberg 34

says. “The club also provides any adaptive equipment that is needed to get started.” Every June, both dare2tri club members and other paratriathletes have the opportunity to take part in the three-day dare2tri Paratriathlon Training Camp. Participants travel from all regions of the United States, attending two-day clinics focused on swimming, cycling/handcycling and running/pushing, amongst other topics. During the final day of the camp, each participant utilizes the knowledge and experience they gained throughout the clinics by actually competing in the annual dare2tri Tri It Triathlon. If athletes can’t attend the camp, they also have an opportunity to participate in another training event, the One Day Multisport Clinic, held every March in Highland Park and open to the public. Throughout the day, participants train with certified coaches while receiving advice on swimming, cycling, running, yoga and functional strength training. Each of these training opportunities, camps and clinics culminate in five or six community races in which club members usually participate. This year, members competed in the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon, the ITU World Triathlon Chicago and the Wauconda Triathlon, and in August will take on both the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon and the Fox Island Triathlon in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which serves as the 2014 USAT Mideast Paratriathlon Regional Championship.

INSPIRING ATHLETES TO IMPROVE EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR LIVES These recreational and competitive triathlon opportunities empower athletes with disabilities to achieve more than they ever thought possible, all while positively impacting each aspect of their lives. “Physically, participants are stronger and lead healthier lives. Emotionally, they feel better about themselves, while setting and working towards goals. And socially, they are more connected with people–with and without disabilities–who share common interests, as they get outside and enjoy life,” Serota says. “Being able to witness the growth of these paratriathletes is so fulfilling,” Tun says. “And knowing you are part of an organization that is able to provide opportunities to maintain the health and well-being of individuals with a physical disability is incredible.” Norberg, for example, lost 25 pounds within a few months of joining dare2tri. “When I first joined, I was out of shape and not leading a very healthy lifestyle,” Norberg says. “But after one full season as a team member, I qualified to race for Team USA in two races this summer, including a fifth-place finish at the Elite Paratriathlon.” Norberg’s involvement with dare2tri actually began when he looked for an opportunity to volunteer in the Chicago area. He soon learned he could volunteer for the club and participate in events as a member all at once. “For anyone looking for a volunteer opportunity, I recommend dare2tri because every event is a fun and rewarding experience,” Norberg states. “Volunteers get to see lots of inspiring athletes, help them reach their goals and have great workouts too.” The next time you can attend a dare2tri clinic or race, consider doing so and witness the ways the club raises awareness about adaptive sports while also inspiring disabled and able-bodied Chicagoans. “Dare2tri’s motto is ‘One Inspires Many,’” Stockwell says. “Whether one of our athletes is inspiring other athletes with disabilities, or able-bodied spectators during a race through their actions, dare2tri members encourage other people to also participate in triathlons and see what they are capable of.” To learn about dare2tri’s presently available membership and volunteer opportunities, or to donate to the club, visit dare2tri.org.

For as long as she can remember, Mary Kate Callahan’s life has been anything but ordinary.

another one?’ Now, four years later, I am competing at the international level,” she says.

Before she turned 6 months old, Callahan contracted transverse myelitis, triggered by a rare neurological virus. The disease left her as a T8-T10 paraplegic. Since then, she has overcome one obstacle after another in astonishing fashion, with the guidance of her parents, the love of her family and the support of her friends.

Recently, she participated in various paratriathlons, garnering second place honors at the ITU World Triathlon Yokohama, finishing runner-up at the Dallas PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships and capturing the ITU World Triathlon Chicago. She also raced with the University of Arizona’s triathlon club, the TriCats, during her freshman year of college.

“I believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it,” she says. “My parents embedded the quote, ‘Never, never, never give up,’ into my mind when I was little and I try to live by these words on a daily basis. It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it.” Callahan’s tenacity shone through when she joined a local swim club as a 6-year-old, rode bikes with her friends while using a hand cycle and competed on Fenwick High School’s varsity swim team. She even made history along the way. “As part of an effort to swim at the high school level, I teamed up with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and Equip for Equality, forcing the Illinois High School Association to create an opportunity for disabled swimmers to compete at the state championship level,” she says. “As a result, six other girls and I were the first disabled athletes to ever compete at an Illinois state championship swim meet.” Despite participating in a variety of adaptive sports ever since her paralysis from the waist down, she had never competed in triathlons until she met dare2tri’s executive director, Keri Serota. “When I crossed the finish line in my first triathlon four years ago, my first thought was, ‘When can I do

To compete at such an elite level, Callahan recommends that triathletes focus on one workout and race at a time, setting aside specific training intervals in which they focus on goals, previous races and upcoming events. She also suggests maintaining a healthy balance between training, traveling and racing. To do so, she spends as much time with friends, who she considers some of her greatest supporters, and family as possible, often vacationing with relatives at her grandparents’ Wisconsin lake house in the summertime. This balance, along with a passion for the sport and a lifelong resolve to exceed expectations, has led her to establish yet another lofty goal: participation in the 2016 Summer Paralympics. “The paratriathlon will make its debut in the Paralympic Games that year,” she says. “The competition is growing, so it won’t be easy, but my road to Rio has already begun.” Considering all she has accomplished in just 18 years, anyone who knows Callahan will not be surprised if her Olympic dreams do indeed become reality and she makes history once again. As Callahan would say, “It’s not always easy,” Callahan says, “but it is always worth it.”

Ask enough runners about their goals while training for a race, and you’ll likely hear a common t h e m e : “ S t a y h e a l t h y. ” F r o m m i l d s h i n s p l i n t s t o chronic plantar fasciitis to debilitating stress fractures, injuries can do ever ything from temporarily cramping your running style to knocking you out of the game for months. While injuries are never convenient, they can really be a pain when they happen weeks out from that major race you’ve had on the calendar for so long.

“Runners—myself included—tend to be ver y stubborn and not want to stop running when injured,” Meg Sullivan, the Chicago Area Running Association’s director of training, says. “Sometimes, all they need is two to three days of no running to prevent losing two to three months, and it’s only after learning that the hard way that I fully understand that.” MychicAgoAthlete.coM

The reason for that is primarily that people don’t rehab 100 percent.”

How we deal with those injuries resembles a Choose Your Own Adventure book. Take path A—ignore it—and you risk doing more harm than good. “If [runners] have an injury or they’re dealing with some pain, they don’t want to see a doctor or a physical therapist because they’re afraid they’re going to be told they can’t run,” Laura Gleason, a physical therapist at Athletico and co-manager of its endurance program, says. Take path B—address it—and you may save yourself the disappointment of pulling out of your goal race. “There are some injuries that can be rehabilitated in a short amount of time so that even if the runner develops an injury towards the end of the training, they can still participate in the event,” Dr. Sara Brown, a board-certified family and sports medicine physician with Chicago Primary Care Sports Medicine, says. Granted, recovery time does depend on the injury. “If they have suffered from a stress fracture or a torn muscle or tendon a month or two before the race, then they will likely not be able to participate in the event,” Brown says.

RECOGNIZE THERE’S A PROBLEM.

You want to catch the injury before it reaches that point where you’re looking at weeks in a boot or surgery. Tightness and pain can both indicate a developing problem. “If pain persists after running, I recommend seeking medical advice,” Brown says. If you’re running with CARA, you have access to a hotline fielded by Novacare’s staff members where you can have your injury-related questions answered. Alternatively, you can visit a physical therapy office for a free injury screening. “If you feel pain somewhere, you obviously want to get it checked out, consult your physician,” David Reavy, a physical therapist who founded React Physical Therapy, says. “You can always go to a physical therapist for free screenings as well so they can help point you in the right direction.”

Stick with what you learned during rehab and don’t overdo the running. As Sullivan says, “I think the key to staying healthy is finding the balance that works for you.”

Your best bet? “A sports medicine physician is the most appropriate choice for a running injury,” Brown says. “They would be able to treat the whole body, so it does not matter where the injury is located.” A physician can order the tests necessary to rule out a stress fracture, refer you to a sub-specialist or prescribe anti-inflammatories or physical therapy.

GET TREATED SOONER, NOT L ATER.

With everything on your already-full plate, scheduling a doctor’s visit to investigate a pinch or some tightness may not happen until you’re struggling to walk. But the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality doesn’t exactly work with running, especially if you wait to seek some relief from your ailments until a week before your event. “Unfortunately there’s just not as much that we can do right before the race,” Gleason says.

From the physical therapist’s perspective, you don’t want to reach the point where you can’t run anymore. “Get potential injuries checked out early,” Gleason says. “One of the most common mistakes I see with runners training for a big race is they ignore those nagging aches and pains and then it can turn into a more serious injury. If a runner has pain two or three months out from a race, it’s much easier to treat.”

Running’s not oveR, it’s diffeRent.

An injury treatment plan depends on the type of injury you have and its severity. But even at their worst, injuries don’t necessarily mean hanging up your running shoes and kissing your marathon dreams goodbye. “Our absolute last resort is to shut a runner down,” Gleason says. “Our goal is to keep them running and enable them to achieve whatever goal they’re looking to reach.” You may spend some time on the Alter-G or the Sproing, alternatives to regular treadmills that lessen the impact underfoot and can help reinforce good running positioning. “While you’re rehabbing you want to keep your endurance up,” Denise Smith, a physical therapist at Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers who heads up its Love to Run program, says. “You don’t want to lose what you had.” You may also change your running technique, which may have caused you to overuse some muscles and misuse others.

“As physical therapists, we’re movement specialists, so why shouldn’t we be the ones teaching someone how to move the right way?” Smith asks. Sure, your running routine might take a bit of a hit as you re-train your muscles, but doing so can allow you to continue running and keep up your fitness levels. “A lot of our patients continue to run when they’re in therapy because what we do is treat the cause as well as the symptoms,” Reavy explains. “When you’re treating the cause, you’re taking the force off the injured area allowing it to heal.”

WGN’s Chicago Triathlon Relay Team MArcuS leSHock, PAtrIck elWooD AnD DAn Ponce

I’m looking forward to being a part of it for the first time, being out there with all the people who train so hard all the time, being part of that group and making Chicago and my station very proud.

Marcus LeShock

One day she said to me, “You’re going to participate in this triathlon as part of the show,” and I said, “Okay.” In the past I’ve been asked to be a part of things. Back in 2011 my wife and I ran the [Bank of America] Chicago Marathon and I made that sort of a recurring thing, so I’m not a stranger to races by any means. It was just asked of me and I’ve never been in a triathlon before, so I said, “Sure,” and that’s how it came about. Q You’ll be doing the swim leg of your team’s relay. If you’ve never done a triathlon before, do you have experience with open water swimming? A I’ve done open water swimming in the sense that I’ve swam in lakes and in the ocean, but never competitively in a mass of humanity in the water. I’ve been swimming a little bit in a pool and conditioning myself. It’s a sprint triathlon, so I have confidence I can make the distance.

What will be interesting will be how all the people in the water change how well you can swim. I’ve heard it’s chaotic and crazy, but others say it’s not as bad as you think. I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like. I’m a little nervous, but I think I’ll do a good job. Q Do you have anything else you hope to ac-

complish by doing this race? A Our lives are so crazy in the news business. We’re go go go, focused on what we have to do in the next 10 minutes that we haven’t really sat down and had the whole big picture, “What are we going to accomplish with this triathlon?” talk. The goal would probably be to finish as strong as possibly and defeat any other news stations that might be in the running with us. I don’t know if there is anyone else doing it, but we want to finish strong: to go out there give it your all do all the best you can. August/september 2014

The last time I did it there was a storm, a 24-hour storm. I had been training in the water, and the temperature at the end of August is 67 or 68. It rained so hard that it churned up all the cold water and the water temperature was 55 degrees. I think it was 2009 or ’10. It was so cold when I hit that water. It took forever just to catch your breath, and that’s what I will remember the most about the last time I did this. I think subconsciously that was another reason why I didn’t want to do the swim.

swim Leg

Q Where did the idea to do this come from? A The idea came from Erin McElroy, our co-anchor.

up even more so. If I could beat my old time by a minute or two I’ll be happy.

Bike Leg

Q How did you get involved in all of this? A Complete disclosure and honesty, I was just sit-

ting at my desk to the left of where they were having their conversation. They were talking back and forth, Erin [McElroy] as chief ringleader there, and she was talking to somebody else. They said, “I’m out of town that weekend,” and by virtue of being in the wrong place at the wrong time she said, “Well, what are you doing?” I couldn’t think of an excuse so I said, “I’m in.” I’ve done the Chicago Triathlon a couple of times and I know that swimming is the hardest part, so I volunteered to take the bike. Q So you’re an experienced triathlete. A I’ve done several. I’ve done the Chicago one and the

Baraboo in Wisconsin, which is nice and smaller. The Chicago Triathlon has a lot of people, and especially for swimming, if you’re not really in shape the people in the next wave come up right behind you. You better have your “A” game. People are bustin’ their butts trying to do serious times, so get out of their way or look out. Q I imagine you’re glad to not have to do the swim this year! A Definitely. I’m excited to be part of the team, the camaraderie of the whole thing. It’s always a great day, always a great sense of accomplishment. Can’t beat the backdrop and landscape that is the city of Chicago, and it’s really well run, too. Q Do you have any goals you hope to accomplish in the triathlon this year? A I need to go back and get into it again, back on the bike. I need to go back and look at my last time, and I’ve got to beat that. That was three or four years ago. I’m in a different age group, too, so I got step

Run Leg

Q How did you get involved in all of this? A It was actually Erin McElroy, Dina Bair. They

kind of keep everyone up on what their races are. Erin suggested we put together a relay team and I volunteered for the running part. Q I take it you have experience running, then? A I’ve done a little biking before but not for a long

time. Running is definitely my strong suit. I did track and cross country in high school and I run three to four days a week. I’m active in the Chicago racing scene. 5Ks and 10Ks are probably my strongest race. I don’t really race longer than that. I’ve never done the marathon but I’d like to someday. Q Have you ever done a triathlon before? A I have not. I’ve done some duathlons with run bike

run but I’ve never been part of a relay team, so I’m really looking forward to this. I’m sure my teammates will be strong as well. I hope to run pretty fast for the run, so I’m hoping my teammates will do well, as well. Q Do you have any hopes or expectations for the race? A I think it’s fun. We’re coworkers and we know each other well on camera and off camera but doing, a triathlon is totally out of our comfort zone. Patrick and Marcus and I, we don’t really spend much quality time together outside the workplace but it’ll be fun to put ourselves in a situation out of our comfort zone. I think it’s important for people to do that occasionally. When you get out of your comfort zone you grow, no matter what your goals are.
