EDITOR’S NOTE

“The winter may be terrible, but summer makes up for it. While we may not have picture-perfect weather year round, Chicago certainly knows how to pack its fun into the three months.”

I

f you spend enough time in Chicago, eventually you’ll hear someone say something like this: “The winter may be terrible, but summer makes up for it.” While we may not have picture-perfect weather year round, Chicago certainly knows how to pack its fun into the three months where you can (usually) count on warm temperatures. One fun summer activity: stand up paddle boarding. This sport made its way to the area a few years ago and quickly picked up steam as one of the best ways to stay active while enjoying one of Chicago’s greatest assets: Lake Michigan. Lynda Barckert introduces us to several stand up paddle board outfitters throughout the city and shows that the sport has options for everyone from casual paddlers to competitive athletes on page 32. While the entire area sees an uptick in road races starting in April, summer brings a unique kind of race to Chicagoland: the weekday evening race. From classics such as the Elvis is Alive 5K to the newly-rebranded Rock the Night 5K (formerly the Terrapin 5K), weekday races offer a change of pace from the usual Saturday or Sunday morning event and give runners a fun way to kick off the weekend. You can read all about these events in Kelsey Plefka’s article on page 38. This season may encourage more people to get outside and get moving around the area, but one location in particular has seen a particular growth in fitness options over the past few years. Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood quickly has become a hotbed for multisport retailers and boutique gyms. Kerry Devine looks into this phenomenon on page 42. Enjoy the warm weather, Chicago. We’ve earned it.

Ride on Chicago

Raises more than $100,000 for PeopleForBikes

R

ide on Chicago, a five-day ride organized by PeopleForBikes in order to raise funds and awareness for better riding conditions in the United States, concluded on June 2, reaching Chicago’s West Loop and surpassing its $100,000 fundraising goal. “This wonderful, highly successful Ride on Chicago celebrated the importance of working together – on a bike ride, in fundraising and speaking with one strong voice for better bike riding,” PeopleForBikes president Tim Blumenthal said in a press release.

Riders traveled from Kansas City, Missouri to Chicago on multi-use paths, rail-trails, rural farm roads, suburban streets and protected bike lanes during their journey. After arriving in Chicago, participants celebrated their accomplishments at the United for Bikes Bash, an event hosted by World Bicycle Relief, PeopleForBikes and the Active Transportation Alliance that highlighted the power of bicycling to change lives on a local, national and global scale. PeopleForBikes plans to repeat the ride in 2015. For more information, visit peopleforbikes.org.

BIKE TRAILS COMING TO BIG MARSH PARK The Chicago Park District recently approved a contract with the Hitchcock Design Group to update Big Marsh Park in South Deering into a bike park on par with that located at Valmont in Boulder, Colorado. The plan calls for dirt bike trails along with a treetop adventure course, fishing, canoeing and hiking. The park aims to bring in more visitors to one of the southernmost neighborhoods in the city of Chicago while highlighting the area’s ecological resources and encouraging eco-recreation. 14

While fresh air may beat the whir of a treadmill, athletes need to take steps to make sure they stay safe on the road, such as running against traffic, cycling with traffic, wearing bright colors (and a helmet for cyclists) and carrying ID. SHANNON’S SPEEDSTERS TEACHERS GIRLS HEALTHY LIVING Local mother Shannon Javaras organized a camp for girls ages 8 to 16 to teach them about a wide range of healthy activities and lifestyle choices this summer. Illini 4000 Cyclists

Make Stop in Chicago During Cross-Country Bike Ride By Kerry Devine

T

wenty cyclists making up a group called the Illini 4000 descended on Millennium Park on June 11 after riding approximately 1,000 miles from New York’s Central Park on their way to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in an effort to raise $150,000 for cancer research and support. With 17 of the riders hailing from Illinois, the stop in Chicago allowed riders to visit with their families before heading west towards bigger challenges. The group has ridden for cancer since 2007, and David Walder, a ride leader for this year’s trek says the 2014 ride is a little different. “After Illinois, we’re going on a brand new route,” Walder says. “This includes crossing the Rockies in Colorado and the Cascades in California. We’re excited to be able to see new communities and hopefully connect with the people there. And some exciting scenery doesn’t hurt either.” 18

July 2014

MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

Illini 4000 gets its name from the targeted distance the group rides every year, 4000 being the rough distance from New York to San Francisco in kilometers. In addition to raising money, the group is “dedicated to documenting the American cancer experience,” and does this with its Portraits Project. In this project, the riders collect narratives of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers they meet along the route in order to discover and share how Americans respond to cancer according to their life circumstances. In the past, some riders have dropped out for family emergencies or job obligations, but not for injury or lack of training. “In the eight years we’ve been doing this ride, nobody has dropped out because they felt they physically couldn’t do the ride,” Walder says. For more information or to lend support, go to www.illini4000.org.

Prairie State Cycling Series Preview 2014: refined schedule to cater to all

By Bryan McVey

The Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series comes back to Chicagoland this month with a refined schedule that will cater to all types of road cyclists and fans. The series got its start three years ago with a one-day criterium race that featured Pro/Am racers in St. Charles. Its success led to a full week series in 2013, generating great races and sizable competitive fields. The Prairie State Cycling Series came at the perfect time for Illinois road cycling, as the long-running International Cycling Classic series (better known as Superweek), slowly lost steam, eventually running its final series in 2012. This year, the Prairie State series, organized by the same promoters that created the highly successful America’s Dairyland Cycling Series in and around Milwaukee, will host eight races over 10 days, running from July 18 to 27. The races will be scored as a cumulative series competition, but cyclists can complete separate events if they want to pick and choose days to compete. Veterans to the sport in the Chicago area will see some familiar and classic venues in the lineup, including the Willow Springs road race, Beverly criterium and the comeback of 22

the criterium in Downers Grove, some of the best Chicagoland venues for their respective race types.

on its iconic Thursday night as in its previous 11 years of existence.

Most American road cycling features criterium racing, particularly in and around major cities such as Chicago. The Willow Springs road race bucks this norm as an amazing road race with all the aspects of a great venue. The long hill climb on Flavin Road through the start/finish section spreads out the race field, but just enough winding road and fast downhill allows gapped riders to scramble back to the peloton in time for the hill to start again. If spectating the race as a fan, enjoy a beer on the outdoor patio of the Irish Legend Restaurant on Archer Ave. for your best view.

Other key races to mention include the comeback of the Downers Grove criterium on the last day, the inaugural Chicago Criterium on the second-to-last day and the Lake Bluff criterium, which is a National Criterium Calendar event as part of the professional criterium racing circuit. Many will remember Downers Grove as the 23-year home of the U.S. Professional and elite criterium national championships, its course recognized across the professional ranks as one of the best and most challenging in the country. Races rarely happen in the Chicago proper, making the Chicago Criterium an exciting opportunity to compete in the city, and Lake Bluff will feature some of the best criterium racers in the country.

For years, the criterium course in Beverly kicked off the 17-day Superweek series and has seen many international and domestic professionals compete on its streets. The race takes place in the historic South Side neighborhood along with lawn parties, street bands and plenty of fans. The racecourse itself is a challenging and semi-technical course with sharp up and downhill sections bookending long straightaways. While the race occurs in the middle of the Prairie State series, it will still run

Either as a fan or a racer, this series will be an excellent one to attend, with fast paced racing for experts, beginner’s races for novices and plenty of family activities including kids bike races and block parties. Check out more information at www.prairiestatecyclingseries.com for each day’s specific race information, including race times, registration and more.

EMIL BOJANOV

AUGUST 22-24 2014

When Emil Bjoanov’s family came to the United States roughly 15 years ago from Bulgaria, he needed to find a new sport. After playing soccer in his home country, Bjoanov gravitated towards track. During his college years, Bojanov earned All-American as an athlete at the University of Chicago and won the Bulgarian national title in the 1,500-meter run. Today, the 29-year-old Fleet Feet Racing Team member names the 5K as his favorite race, and for good reason. In his past three races, Bjoanov finished first or second, taking top honors at the United Run for the Zoo 5K and the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge while finishing second at the ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K with a sub-16 minute race. After recovering from an injury in March, Bojanov started a new 36-week training period and runs a race roughly every two weeks. He says he plans to run a number of local races like the Burgers and Beer 5K and the BTN Big 10 5K while building towards more competitive races in the fall and working to run a sub-15 minute 5K.

LAURA BATTERINK

Laura Batterink picked up running as a hobby while attending Oregon University, and since then, the sport has become a major part of her life. Batterink, a Canada native currently living in Evanston, trains with the Evanston Running Club and has emerged as one of the top contenders in the CARA Runners Choice Circuit this year. Batterink, 29, finished second in the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in March and won the Quarryman Challenge, Elgin Fox Trot and North Shore Classic Half Marathon. Despite her impressive performances, Batterink says she had no plans to win. At Quarryman, she wanted to run the best race she could, and she treated the Elgin Fox Trot as a training run. Batterink says she didn’t think she had a chance to win the North Shore Classic Half Marathon but managed to pass the lead runner near the end and took the crown. Later this year, Batterink plans to return to Toronto to compete in the Canadian 10K National Championships and will also run in the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver.

Ken Stancik

chArity: Team LIVeSTRONG

Ken Stancik came to running as a way to improve his health. At nearly 300 pounds, Stancik felt dissatisfied with the way he looked and began running and dieting to get back into shape. What started as simple runs around the block soon turned into a mile, and in time one mile turned into 26.2.

“My worst experience with cancer was driving [my mother] back and forth from chemotherapy, watching her decline and not knowing what to do,” Stancik says. “There are no directions. My father did not want to believe she was going to die, so he was in complete denial. I had a doctor walk up to me and asked me if I wanted to put her at do-not-resuscitate status and I wasn’t ready for that.”

“I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2007,” Stancik says. “I wanted to be in good enough shape to run a marathon. That was such an awesome experience for me, and I got really into it after that.”

Stancik’s experience with his mother’s cancer makes him appreciate the work of the LIVESTRONG Foundation. He says he needed advice during his mother’s illness but didn’t know where to turn: a problem the LIVESTRONG Foundation works to solve.

Stancik returned to the Lasalle Bank Chicago Marathon in 2008, but a car accident after the marathon derailed his running for quite some time. This year, he’s back at it, hoping to not only break his personal record but also make an impact on others through his running. Stancik will run this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon on behalf of Team LIVESTRONG. Stancik has seen several family members battle cancer, though he says watching his mother battle cancer when he was a young adult challenged him the most. 26

“I really didn’t know how to handle things and if there had been somebody there to talk to or somebody to give you some advice on how to handle certain situations: that’s why I like Team LIVESTRONG,” Stancik says. “They offer support to people who are going through it right now.” Though Stancik, like many other charity runners for this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon, only needs to raise $1,000 for Team LIVESTRONG, he hopes to raise 10 times that amount as a way of honoring his mother.

“My goal is $10,000,” Stancik says. “I want to do this big for my mother. I want to leave a mark and hope it helps a lot of people.” While the Bank of America Chicago Marathon may be one of Stancik’s biggest races this year, he has other events on his calendar as well. He’s run half marathons and 5Ks already this year, including the Beacon Sunburst Half Marathon in South Bend, Indiana, which supports Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Bend. “You get to a certain point in your life when it’s time to give back,” Stancik says. “When you’re raising a family, paying mortgages, you’re thinking about yourself. When you get to my age, you feel like it’s time to start contributing.” Stancik also plans to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon this November. Stancik has never run two marathons so close to each other before, but after seeing other people accomplish multiple marathons in a year, he knows he can do the same. “A friend of my did the Boston Marathon this year, and I know another friend who has done four marathons this year, so I’m getting inspired by other people,” Stancik says. “But I like the Chicago one the best.”

How to Find the Right Team for your Child By: Chris Palmquist

As a parent and youth coach, I’ve witnessed young athletes active in high quality sports programs enjoy tremendous benefits. Done right, being part of a team can help a child reach his or her athletic potential, enjoy an active life, mature into productive citizens and feel a sense of belonging. Done wrong, youth sports can hurt young lives. Keep an eye out for these qualities in youth sports programs. Child-Focused An excellent youth coach cares about each member of the team. He or she will talk to everyone frequently as individuals, working together to set goals, acknowledge all improvements and give constructive advice on how to progress. Good coaches make it possible for every kid to feel like a valued member of the team. Long Term Outlook In many sports, athletes don’t peak until high school or early adulthood. Outstanding teams make decisions with that long-term goal in mind. Whether or not a young athlete shows promise now, the team and coach need to guide that athlete with age-appropriate training, age-appropriate race distances and well-rounded skills so that the athlete slowly builds to a peak several years down the road. Be wary of programs or coaches that tout win-loss records. Those types of programs often make decisions based on winning now at all costs. Higher fees do not translate into better programs. Avoid any organization, sponsor or coach who promises increased success if your child leaves their current team to join a new one. Respect and Education The best youth teams make it a high priority to teach respect for the sport, the officials, the rules and other

competitors. Coaches should remind the young athletes to thank and appreciate their parents. Good coaches introduce community service components to the team activities to help each kid realize his or her good fortune and to show how young people can make a positive difference to the world around them. Look for teams that educate parents on how to support all young athletes with positive comments, cheering and patience. Age Appropriate, Fun and Social Young athletes remain active if they have fun with their sport, feel as if they are improving and enjoy their teammates. Look for coaches who make practice fun, yet challenge the athletes with age-appropriate expectations. Good teams encourage young athletes to experience other sports and non-sport activities as part of a well-rounded childhood. Elementary and middle school athletes should never be benched because they participate in other activities or important family events. Membership on a team should not require 100 percent commitment year round to just one sport.

USA triAthlon MideASt region tAlent id SerieS As the sport of triathlon grows, more opportunities arise to compete on a high level. USA Triathlon’s Mideast Region Talent ID Series aims to provide young athletes with the chance to experience top competition within their region and, ultimately, find those with promise for Olympic competition. “Races within the region give junior athletes an opportunity to compete for points,” Mike Groaning, Mideast regional development coordinator, says. “It’s also a way of identifying upand-comers as far as triathletes in the pipeline of Olympic sports.” The series kicked off in June and lasts through August with nine races taking place across four of the five states that make up the Mideast region. All nine races meet a set of criteria that ensures an ideal experience both for those new to triathlon along with those looking to race against the best regional talent. USAT also looked for races that included age-appropriate distances for young athletes. “Youth athletes should be racing supersprint distance races, so half the distance of your standard sprint,” Groaning says. “Those aren’t as common as we’re trying to make them.” Athletes aged 13 to 19 can compete in the Talent ID Series, and the top three males and females in both Youth (ages 13-15) and Junior (ages 16-19) categories at the end will receive awards. The top

kids

10 competitors at each event in the series receive points, and athletes must compete in at least two races to qualify for overall series awards. In the event of a tie, placement at the Mideast Youth and Junior Regional Championship will count as the tiebreaker.

“We’re encouraging all the participants to do the draft-legal race, which is what the Olympic triathlon is, as opposed to most age group races which is the non-draft version of triathlon,” Groaning says. Though the series began in June, several races still remain, including the Mill Creek Triathlon in Marshall on July 26 and the Wauconda Triathlon in Wauconda on July 27. Outside of Illinois, the Caesar Creek State Park Triathlon in Waynesville, Ohio, the Indianapolis Sprint Triathlon #2 in Indianapolis and the Sylvania Triathlon in Sylvania, Ohio are also part of the series, along with the championship race at the Detroit Triathlon.

Summer’S CooleSt Sport this time of year, the Chicago lakefront bursts with runners, cyclists, swimmers, triathletes and kayakers. But if you want a unique way to experience the water or refresh your workout routine, try one of the newest sports on lake michigan: stand up paddle boarding.

stand Paddle Boarding

Reported by The Outdoor Foundation as 2013’s most popular outdoor activity among first-time participants, stand up paddle boarding combines surfing and kayaking on an over-sized surfboard. Originating with ancient Polynesian cultures, SUP as a sport exploded onto the scene in Hawaii 15 years ago. It spread to California and beyond, arriving in Chicago around 2005 when Dave Olson of Kayak Chicago decided to add SUP classes and rentals to his kayak rental business at Montrose Beach. In 2009, Ian Jacobson, owner of Chicago SUP, opened the area’s first exclusively-SUP business at North Avenue Beach. “I grew up on Lake Michigan,” Jacobson says. “After discovering SUP on a trip to Hawaii, I brought it back to Chicago as a way to catch waves on smaller days. Instantly a light went off in my head that this would be something people would enjoy doing on flat water as well. Within a month I had a business up and running with six boards. This year we will have over 60. Initially we used to have clients from Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, even Ohio, as we were the only dedicated stand up paddle boarding operation in the Midwest at that time.” Newcomers to the sport like SUP because of its short learning curve and low impact nature. Don’t let those qualities fool you, though. SUP primarily requires balance, and as such provides a total body workout. “Paddling correctly is a learned skill that involves paddling with your entire core and back,” Michael “Westy” Westenberger of the Chicago Paddle Company explains. “It’s a rotational movement. We always say the best paddlers paddle from their toes to their shoulders. Throw in an unstable surface and you add balance, too.”

SUP appeals to a wide range of participants, from elite athletes to paddlers who just want to have fun. Those looking for competition can choose from a plethora of races throughout the United States. Races often cover between four and nine miles and require both endurance and sprinting energies. Races usually have either a water start or a beach start, which involve paddlers sprinting to the water’s edge with board in hand. Racecourses follow a series of loops involving multiple buoy turns to keep paddlers in front of spectators, trace the perimeter of a lake or follow a simple out and back format. Race directors determine the course design, which often highlights the strengths of the local area. Those interested in local SUP competition have plenty of options. Chicago Kayak teamed up with BIC Sports to provide the BIC One Design Series each Sunday morning at Montrose Beach. These 10-minute sprint races follow four-buoy format courses that change weekly. Each heat produces a winner who moves on to a final race that day. The winner of the final race takes first place for the day. Event winners then qualify for the worldwide circuit’s final race in September at a location yet to be determined by BIC. Chicago SUP, located on the beach at North Avenue, also hosts many competitions. From Aug. 8 to 10, some of the world’s top professional paddlers will come to North Ave. for the Chicago World Paddle Challenge, a Stand Up World Series event, to compete for a $20,000 prize purse. The unique format of this event allows amateur racers to line up side by side and compete in the same field as top pros. Those looking to SUP for a cause can consider the True North Treks race for cancer survivors on July 27 at Montrose Beach. For triath-

letes looking for a change of pace, some triathlons now offer a SUP component in place of the swim. For instance, Leon’s Triathlon, which takes place annually in Hammond, Indiana, added its first SUP division last year. The recent popularity of SUP ultimately lies in its adaptability, and variations abound. You don’t have to take a class in order to rent a SUP, but it never hurts to learn proper technique. Along the Chicago area beaches, several SUP outfitters provide a range of opportunities for learning, practicing and socializing with SUP. They offer beginning, intermediate and advanced classes for kids and adults alike for $35 to $50 per class, equipment rental by the hour, passes or memberships. Each outfitter also has its own beautiful view of the city.

Every class is different and tailored to each unique group I teach.” Cerami’s classes take place at Kayak Chicago’s Montrose Beach location. As a competitive sport, a fitness routine and a recreational pastime, SUP has a lot to offer. Whichever facet of the sport appeals to you, the area’s beachfront SUP outlets can certainly meet your needs. The next time the sunlight glitters on those blue Lake Michigan waves, give this fun and exciting sport a try.

“Everyone, regardless of their level of expertize, will ‘ah’ at the most majestic views of Chicago’s glorious skyline from our vantage point,” John Gibbs, founder of Chicago Paddle Rentals at the 31st Street Harbor, says. Many outfitters along Lake Michigan also feature guided expeditions and unique offerings that blend yoga, Pilates or fitness workouts while using the floating SUP board as a base. “SUP Yoga is basically as it sounds, yoga postures practiced on a stand up paddle board,” Mary Lou Cerami, a certified yoga and SUP instructor working for Chicago S.U.P Yoga, says. “The paddleboard makes a perfect yoga mat. It’s wide, stable and challenging, yet suitable for all levels, beginners included. I teach a progression of yoga and balance techniques that get everyone comfortable on their boards quickly and effectively. From the start, you learn how to correctly stand up on your board, paddle in a straight line as well as turn and maneuver your board in any direction. It’s part of every class I teach. The more comfortable you are, the more poses we can try.

MICHAEL “WESTY” WESTENBERGER

Five years ago, a friend bet Michael Westenberger he couldn’t complete the 12-mile Key West Paddleboard Classic. With a mere two weeks of training, Westy placed second in the event and went on to become KWPBC’s race director. After competing in races all over Florida, Jeff Archer, owner of YOLO Board, invited Westy to join his sponsored race team. Among his many race accomplishments, Westy, co-owner of Chicago Paddle Company, particularly takes pride in his first-place finish in last season’s Chicago Skyline Classic. “It was great to have a World Paddle Association-sanctioned event right in my backyard and the conditions were extremely difficult so I definitely give credit to all competitors that finished that race last year,” Westy says. But SUP competition isn’t always about finishing first. Sometimes, endurance makes a race memorable. Westy recounts another proud moment, when he

finished about 20th in the 2011 Florida State Championships. “I had trained hard and felt strong but a collision at the start put a hole in the nose of my board, and as my board continued to take on water I kept falling off,” Westy says. “Many times I thought of quitting but just stayed focused mentally until the end. When I crossed the finish a board handler realized my board was about 15 pounds heavier with all the water I had taken on.” This season, Westy will race stand up paddle boards every weekend in the WPA Midwest point series races. In the late summer and into fall he will travel to Louisiana, Florida and California for stand up paddle races. Westy also races competitively in outrigger canoes, both in one-man canoes and as part of a nine-man team. He is grateful to racing sponsors YOLO Board and KIALO Paddles, as well as to his nutritional sponsor Garden of Life, for allowing him to continue his racing career.

From the city to the suburbs, summer marks the beginning of weeknight race season in Chicago. The draw of these nighttime festivities varies based on event, but one commonality unites them all: the race organizer’s desire to share his or her passion for the sport.

Coral Berta, 35, enjoys seeing how her body reacts in different situations. The Sundowner 5k, hosted by the Joliet Park district on July 24, allows Berta to do just that. Berta, a member of the run for Inwood run Club, appreciates the fact that the Joliet Park district puts on an evening weekday race for several reasons. “This is a good race to gauge your evening performances, seeing that many of us work all day,” Berta says. “It’s also a different type of weather…cooler in the evening in the summer.” 38

700 and 800 runners. As the Sundowner 5K enters its 14th year, Gale hopes that the summer weather and the shorter distance will help the event to continue to grow in size.

ark district

Whether participants want to run against stiff competition or simply enjoy a casual evening run, Gale says a vast array of abilities turn out for the Sundowner 5K. “There is a wide range in the level of competition from several runners finishing in under 20 minutes to recreational walkers,” Gale says. “The race appeals to competitive runners because it is well organized, ChronoTrack timed and the course is fast, scenic and paved.” Berta also believes that the level of competition is increasing. “More and more competitive runners are coming out to Joliet for these big races,” she says. “It is nice being challenged and seeing new and old faces.” If evening temperatures, competition and the scenic course don’t draw runners to Joliet, Gale hopes that the swag will. “We host a quality event with great shirts, a great post-race party and custom finisher medals for all participants,” Gale says. Photo by Joliet Park district

According to Donna Gale, fitness coordinator at the Joliet Park District, race organizers created the Sundowner 5K to be an evening race with a great post-race party, showcasing Joliet’s Pilcher Park. This particular race also allows those runners who work on weekends to compete in a local race. Last year’s Sundowner 5K attracted over 1,100 runners, compared to Joliet Park District’s other two Saturday morning races that drew between

The Sundowner may be a great event for runners who would like to wind down after a crazy work week, but what about the runners that want to end their Thursday night with a bang? For those looking for a race with festival atmosphere, RAM Racing hosts the Rock the Night 5K, formerly the Terrapin 5K, on Aug. 21 at Soldier Field. “The race tends to draw an older demographic,” Geneva Costopulos, RAM Racing’s social media manager, says. “[Most participants are] running this race after work in the city as a fun Thursday night MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

after-work outing. In the past, it has also brought the runner’s families out to enjoy the post-race entertainment.” This year, Big Head Todd and the Monsters will headline the post-race party, and hamburgers, hot dogs and beer will abound after the race. Costopulos says that Rock the Night has “one of the most fun post-race parties,” and that more participants tend to stay around later to enjoy the atmosphere than at Saturday or Sunday morning races where they would typically run and go home. “It is a very different atmosphere because it is a combined music festival,” Costopulos says. “People often like going out on Thursday night, as opposed to Fridays or Saturdays when it tends to be busier, and Rock the Night is not your typical happy hour.” If Thursday night parties aren’t your thing, perhaps a weeknight tribute to the King is. On the Thursday evening closest to Aug. 16, the day Elvis died, runners descend on Lincoln Park dressed in their best Elvis attire for the annual Elvis is Alive 5K. According to Robin Monsky, Fleet Feet’s public relations and media inquiries manager, the Elvis is Alive 5K draws close to 2,000 runners

each year, 80 percent of which dress in sequins, capes, wigs, sunglasses and sideburns. Around 10 percent of participants show up dressed in head-to-toe Elvis costumes and receive special privileges, such as their own start corral. Elvis is Alive, this year scheduled for Aug. 14, is self-timed and runner-centric. Monsky says that the welcoming environment, attention to detail and relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere keep runners coming back year after year. “The only goal for this race is for people to have fun with their friends, hang out with other people who believe running is not just exercise but enjoyable, hear a great post-race concert and have a great time,” Monsky says. “It really was one of the first ‘themed’ runs in Chicago and people continue to look forward to the novelty of this event and its early weekend timing.” Thursday seems to no longer be an awkward day between the workweek and the start of the weekend. Now, runners can look forward to Thursdays. As Monsky says, whether you’re dressed like the King, running towards a finish line of music and refreshments or simply enjoying the company of fellow running buddies, “Can you think of a better excuse to start your weekend a little early?”

Ask anyone to describe the West Loop today, and they’re likely to mention cranes and condos.

to and from work,” Wilson says. “It’s really a growing neighborhood, lots of growth potential and not fully established yet.”

“Everyday I see a new crane out, a sign for a new restaurant that’s opening, so it’s definitely booming,” Kim Reed, newly married and living in the West Loop, says. She joined Crosstown Fitness on a lark and now prefers its boutique style to big box gyms, joining a flood of fitness-minded new residents making the West Loop a hotbed for fitness and endurance sports.

Wilson opened Wilson Fitness Studios in the neighborhood a little over a year ago.

Charlie Graff, who opened Crosstown Fitness a year ago, has witnessed the changes. A former teacher at Whitney Young, he’s lived in the area for 10 years.

For Annette Fiscelli, who co-owns On Your Mark Coaching + Training with Emily Hutchins, it was a matter of starting a business where you live.

“I had a club in the suburbs,” Graff says. “The last three years I’ve been combing the city of Chicago trying to find the right neighborhood. The West Loop fit the demographic of what we were looking for.” Robin French of Bare Feet Power Yoga saw an opportunity and took it. “They didn’t have a lot of yoga here at the time, and I knew it was going to be a great neighborhood. I loved it already,” she says. “Right now the West Loop is booming with so many new condos and high rises on Halsted. People are gravitating toward the West Loop. The great thing is there’s a lot of residential [space], and with fitness, the more convenience the better.” Convenience applies to those traveling from outside the West Loop as well, according to Jessica Wilson of Wilson Fitness Studios. “It’s pretty conveniently located for those in suburbs, people traveling 44

“Emily and I, we were just trainers then, we had a small studio down the street on Ogden,” Fiscelli says. “We thought, let’s put a small class together to make [personal training] affordable.” Their studio only fit five people, and when classes filled up and they needed a bigger facility, they found it right there in the West Loop. “Five years ago people asked us, ‘What are you guys doing here?’ It has [a] more neighborhood feel now. I think that boutique gyms are in right now, they’re hot.” Recognizing the trends, Fiscelli and Hutchins do what they can to set their business apart. “[Boutique gyms] usually offer one thing, but we have a little bit of everything, for endurance athletes or someone who just wants to get in shape,” Fiscelli says.

“Our store is not about competition or gear.” Our key customer is doing it for the internal thing. What’s inside gets us outside: camaraderie, setting goals, live a more engaged life, not how fast you did your last marathon. It’s about, ‘Did you enjoy it?” -Fealy MyChiCaGoathlete.CoM

While On Your Mark came to the West Loop years ago, Mox Multisport opened its doors in the area as Mission Bay Multisport 15 years ago. Amy Comstock worked there for years and took ownership in 2009, fully understanding the potential of the neighborhood. “I remember when it was not what it is today,” Comstock says. “There weren’t a lot of people living here. Now we’re surrounded by so much construction, some are trying to get landmark status [for buildings] to slow things down.” Her store is still a multisport cycling store, but with a more laid back mentality than before. Regardless, Mox Multisport still caters to competitive athletes, which seems to fit the attitude of the area. “I think being a female-owned store changed our approach to customer,” Comstock says. “It’s less intimidating than when it was a guyowned store, much more customer focused, concentrating on putting people with the right equipment. One hour we will put someone on an $800 starter bike, next hour we will sell someone a $10,000 race bike.” Gillian Fealy, owner of brand new triathlon store Live Grit, embraces a similar philosophy. “Our store is not about competition or gear,” Fealy says. “Our key customer is doing it for the internal thing. What’s inside gets us outside: camaraderie, setting goals, live a more engaged life, not how fast you did your last marathon. It’s about, ‘Did you enjoy it?’” 46

So who exactly enjoys the West Loop’s fitness boom? “Young professionals that are either starting off or getting settled in their career,” Wilson says. “At that age they start to think about working out and being more conscious of it, making it more of a lifestyle.” Many in that demographic shun box or chain fitness places. Charlie Hirsch, a songwriter who recently moved to Chicago from Los Angles, works out at Coöp Gym. “I avoid the bigger chains. I like the smaller mom and pop gyms,” he says. “They seem to have their stuff in order and also keep their numbers small. At Coöp, they have a theory behind what they do, a strategic plan that I appreciate. I do feel like I’ve seen a lot of results and a lot more people come through there, definitely more members than when I started with them back in the fall.” Reed loves the lifestyle the West Loop provides. “It’s definitely booming, and I feel like it’s mostly young professionals like me that want to live the city life without being 22 anymore, that don’t like be hung over, no club scene, but we still like to have a good time,” she says. It’s a neighborhood that caters to urban professionals who make fitness a priority in their lives and want to live in a place that is less about a party scene but still has plenty of vibe. What once seemed merely a place to find safe passage through now houses many fit, active, urban professionals and young families. Just watch out for the cranes.

Second GlAnce Q Are you still swimming, or do you mostly just do the 9-to-5 thing now? A Mostly 9-to-5 but I swim once a week recreationally and I also put on swim clinics across the country on occasional weekends. It’s a lot of fun. The clinics are for kids ages 6 to 18 mostly and are technique-focused and goal-oriented. We talk about setting goals not just in swimming but outside the pool as well. It gives them a chance to be exposed to Olympians on that level. Q Going off that goal-setting idea, what drove you in competition before your retirement? A I’ve always naturally been a goal setter. I’m not sure how it came about but I think there’s always been a part of me that strives to get better at what I’m doing. In swimming it was very progressive. I didn’t wake up one day when I was 14 and say, “I want to be an Olympian.” I wanted to get better each season. I did that in a very progressive, step-by-step way so by the time I got to college I wanted to be on relays and be a contributor to the team. Swimming is an individual sport but I always felt that team atmosphere. That’s the part I really loved. By the time it was my junior year, I wanted to be one of best in the conference, then one of the best in country. All of a sudden it was 2008 and Olympic Trials were going on. I went for my own fun and to be competitive and found myself on an Olympic team. I was always a very progressive goal setter.

Q can you tell me a bit about Swim Across America as an event? What does it support? A It’s not a race, it’s more of an event. All of the money raised in Chicago stays in Chicago for cancer research. Sometimes you don’t know where the money is going but with Swim Across America, you do. It’s cool to hear about the types of projects we’re funding and we’ve been very successful funding them. We had I believe three full research projects funded out of last year alone. We’re funding underfunded areas, particularly in prevention, early stages, early detection. My dad is a prostate cancer survivor and it was because of early detection that he didn’t have to go through chemo, which was amazing. My college swim coach—who got me to the Olympics—his wife was diagnosed very early with breast cancer and she had been very successful in her treatment, thus far. She actually did a triathlon a month ago after months of radiation. It’s incredible the types of things they’re 62

funding and how many lives it’s saved and can save in the future. Q How are you involved in Swim Across America? A I’m on the organizing committee and swimmer. Q What does that entail? A Besides being a participant, as part of the organiz-

ing committee I’m reaching out to my contacts in the swimming world, helping out with social media, doing targeted campaigns to who would be interested and how can we potentially reach them. Q What are you doing now that you’ve retired from competitive swimming? A I retired from swimming last August after the World Championships and moved back to Chicago in the fall. I was job hunting for a while and started a job mid-February.

Q Aside from clinics, are you involved in the swimming world in any other way right now? A For right now my new job keeps me pretty busy, so I’m giving back through clinics and through Swim Across America and I also participate in World Sport Chicago, speaking to inner city elementary and junior high schools. I really enjoy that. I think at this time that’s all I really have time to dedicate my self to. I love getting involved in local charities, especially with Chicago youth. Q How do you stay active now? Any new fitness pursuits? A I’m trying to transition to working out on land rather than in the water. Fellow swimmers will understand that it’s a process. I always lifted weights when swimming but it was mostly that and swimming. Now I’m trying to become more of a runner and get my land legs. I love to go on runs on the Lakefront Trial and things like especially now that the weather has turned nice. It’s great to just be outdoors and have dry hair and not stare at a black line while working out. That’s what I’m focused on as far as fitness. I’m doing different things, doing a bit more yoga, trying new classes out, still getting in the pool once a week but then mixing it up. It’s been fun.
