EDITOR’S NOTE

Standing at the Journalism Starting Line It is with great excitement that I introduce myself, Holly Petrovich, as the new Editor in Chief of Chicago Magazine as of May 16. As a 22-year-old fresh out of college, I could not be more thankful for the opportunity to begin my journalism career at a place that allows me to combine several of my passions; not only do I get to build on my writing, editing and photography skills, but this position will motivate me to grow as a runner, a hobby I grew to love in high school cross country. With my journalism degree from Illinois State University, experience as Editor in Chief at our school newspaper, and a half marathon under my belt, I have no doubts that Chicago Athlete is the perfect fit for me. I am eager to learn more about the magazine and racing industry, and hope to put my own spin on what is already a great product. My ideas are endless, and I am thrilled to begin implementing them. From my standpoint, YOU, as a Chicago Athlete reader, are my new best friend and my priority; I want to be a perpetual resource for you, and even while I am still learning the ropes of the job, I want you to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or ideas regarding our magazine. Here’s the info you need: Email: editor@mychicagoathlete.com Phone: 847.675.0200 x208 Twitter: @holly_petrovich. Use it! I feel as though I’m standing at the starting line of a race, nervous for what’s to come, yet exhilarated by the unknown.

I just can’t wait to break in my new running shoes.

CARA LAUNCHES FREE COMMUNITY SUMMER RUNS

T

he Chicago Area Runners Association announced ‘Go Runs, its latest community initiative, in late April. The program will bring free, timed running events to locations around the city throughout the summer to help encourage active lifestyles and local engagement.

‘Go Runs will take place at 9 a.m. Saturdays from May 21 through July 9 at Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park, near the field house of Warren Park and east of the pool house in Washington Park and feature one mile and 5K distances. Anyone can participate, regardless of his or her previous experience in running, involvement with CARA or age, though those under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian sign a waiver in order to run. Strollers, wheelchairs and well-behaved, leashed dogs are also welcome at ‘Go Runs. Those interested in running can visit cararuns.org/gorun and register online before 11:59 p.m. on the Thursday night before the event. Once a person has registered, they can participate in any ‘Go Run at any park on any Saturday for the duration of the program, though they must choose a home park and participate in that park’s run first. Runners will receive a timing chip to wear on their shoe at their first ‘Go Run, and will use this same chip for every event. Runners can also register on-site between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Results will be available at cararuns.org after each event. To sign to up to run or volunteer at ‘Go Runs, visit cararuns.org/gorun. 14

Kyle Larson and Pam Staton, both runners for Fleet Feet/Nike Racing, took the top Illinois finishes at the Boston Marathon this year. Larson turned in a 2:34:15 in his Boston debut, while Staton crossed the finish line in 2:52:59, finishing as the 12th American female overall. Kristin Johnson, another Fleet Feet/Nike Racing runner, took third for Illinois women with a 2:57:01.

Five Chicago Races

AMoNg NATIoN’S lArgEST

Running USA released its annual State of the Sport: Largest Road Races report in April, detailing participation numbers across events in 2015, and Chicago had more events within the top 50 than any other city in the country.

The National Academy of Sports Medicine and Ironman announced in early May a new partnership that will provide NASM-certified personal trainers with the opportunity to take online courses to help their clients prepare for triathlons.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon topped the list with 37,395 finishers, good for fifth place overall for the second consecutive year. The 5K of the Hot Chocolate 15K/5K narrowly edged out the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K for second place Photo by: ali engin in the area with 23,096 finishers compared to the 8K’s 22,873. The 15K of the Hot Chocolate 15K/5K, counted as a separate event for finisher totals, had 12,218 finishers last year, while the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon rounded out Chicago’s races in the top 50 with 12,032 finishers.

Ironman coaching certification, which provides 1.4 continuing education units towards the required 2.0 cEUs NASM trainers need to recertify every two years, covers a wide range of relevant topics, including background on the history of the Ironman and how to develop a training plan to sport-specific conditioning and training guidance for the three disciplines of an Ironman.

Had the Hot Chocolate races been counted together, the event, with 35,314 total finishers, would have placed seventh on a national scale. The Hot Chocolate 5K was the largest 5K in the country last year, and the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K took top honors as the largest 8K in the United States.

The Ironman coaching certification program builds on Ironman’s Ironman U program, an online education resource for athletes and coaches.

O

ne of Chicago’s first organized running clubs, the Riis Park Striders, will celebrate its 40th anniversary this June. The club, which hosted its first meet on June 29, 1976, grew out of a tradition started by former St. Pat’s High School coach George Gebauer, who created the Shamrock Track Club at Riis Park in the mid-1960s. After his departure to coach at Maine South High School, Mike Martorano and Andy Senorski stepped in to fill Gebauer’s place, thus forming the Riis Park Striders. In the 1980s, Chris Precht took over as the club’s president, and continues to serve in that role today. “Our motto is run and enjoy,” Precht says. “We put on low key races so people can get an idea of what they can do, come out once a week and enjoy themselves.” The Riis Park Striders rose to particular recognition in the Chicago running scene in the late 1970s and 1980s. During that time, the Chicago Area Runners Association organized annual track meets, which Riis Park won in 1979, 1981 and from 1983-1986.

“We used to clean up in all the age groups, from 8 and under to over 70,” Precht says. “Now we’re mainly just a long distance running club.” The Riis Park Striders host weekly meets on Saturdays with runs of varying distances ranging from one mile to 7.2 miles, running on roads in the early spring and cross country-style around Riis Park during the summer. Its two biggest races take place on Thanksgiving, when the club hosts the Joe Mittel Memorial Mile and the Dick King Memorial 5K, and the Christmas Classic six mile race in December. Anyone can join the club, which meets at Riis Park (6100 W. Fullerton). To learn more, visit rpstriders.org.

Stacy Nigrelli

Twelve years ago, Stacy Nigrelli signed up for her first half marathon, and she hasn’t looked back since. As time has gone on, Nigrelli has continued to improve, taking more than 44 minutes off her original marathon time and winning her age division at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2014 at 60 years old. Last year, Nigrelli ran a 3:25:37 at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, accomplishing her long-held goal of a 3:25 marathon and taking second in her age division. She hopes to continue improving this year, particularly at the half marathon and marathon distances, and would especially like to take 19 seconds off her 1:35:10 half marathon time from last year’s Naperville Half Marathon to earn a 90 percent age graded score.

JaN Myrda

Jan Myrda won the notoriously challenging Rockdale Ramblin’ 10K in April, turning in a blazing 35:33, but doesn’t consider running his primary sport. Myrda, an avid cross country skier, uses road racing to help train for skiing in the winter. He won the Wolf Tracks Rendezvous 42K Skate in Minocqua, Wisconsin in January with a 2:16:28 and took 44th in the 51K Birkebeiner Skate at the American Birkebeiner in February in 2:29:39. Myrda has finished in the top 50 at the American Birkebeiner for the past six years and considers the race his main focus each year. He credits his regular training schedule and healthy diet for his success, and counts his 27th-place finish at the 1999 Boston Marathon in 2:25:20 as one of his biggest athletic accomplishments.

The Long Ride

chicago north Branch trail By Bryan McVey

W

hile Chicago spring played its cruel jokes on us, it gave us just enough warmth to find sporadic days to continue building base mileage in more dynamic scenery than atop a trainer in front of the television. Getting those long miles in around the city, though, can prove challenging in its own right. Many cyclists default to the Lakefront Trail, which can become a dangerous game of Frogger during post-hibernation and tourist season. While great for practicing your handling skills, it may not be the best choice for uninterrupted riding. Fortunately, you know better and now want other options for your hours in the saddle amongst some different non-urban landscapes. Chicago, its suburbs and many locations in Illinois have abundant nature and forest preserves, fantastic places to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and mix up your riding landscape. One such ride is the North Branch Trail that leads up to the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe. This trailhead and loop—or out and back—ranges from 24

june/july 2016

Mychicagoathlete.coM

30-45 miles depending on where you start, but the trail begins at Devon and Caldwell in Chicago’s Edgebrook neighborhood. From here, you can follow the winding path north through Caldwell, Linne, Harms and Watersmeet Woods, in addition to several other wooded areas, along the North Branch of the Chicago River. As you enter and exit each new section of wooded seclusion, you will find a slightly different feel, along with an overarching theme, amongst the different preserves. An abundance of trees provide the backdrop over bridges and past clearings, sitting in stark contrast to our otherwise asphalted world of Chicagoland. Eventually, the path leads to the east side of I-94, up through the Skokie Lagoons and finally ends at the halfway point of the Chicago Botanic Garden, around 15 miles in from the trailhead. Stay awhile to enjoy these amazing gardens, or follow the path back south the same way you came north. You can also make the ride a loop by heading east to Sheridan Road, using this main roadway to bring you back south along the lakefront and eventually to the Lakefront Trail. Either way, you experience a

diverse ride that showcases a part of the area that largely goes untapped. A plethora of people and animals (domesticated and wild) use this trail and can pose the same kind of obstacles you may encounter on the lakefront. There are many blind and sharp corners, so keep speeds in check when you cannot see around the bend. The trail has quite a few road crossings, so be mindful of cars that might not notice you emerging from the wooded areas at intersections. The path may become flooded in areas, especially at bridge underpasses, so try to plan your ride around dry weather. Similarly, with the heavy tree cover in sections, it takes longer for the path to dry out, so watch wet spots as well as leaves and other natural debris. In all, the city and the surrounding suburbs offer many great riding routes, as long as you get a bit more creative in the planning portion. Once ridden though, you can easily ride this route again without a cue sheet or GPS, giving you the opportunity to take in the scenery while you pedal along.

Ritchell currently runs two days per week, staying active throughout the rest of the week with swimming and biking to maintain an all-around fitness base. To prepare for the marathon, he plans to increase his mileage and slow down slightly and hopes to finish the race in under 3:30. “I believe if you prepare adequately, mentally and physically, you can do anything,” Ritchell says.

oss Ritchell grew up as an athlete, but didn’t catch the running bug until his time in the U.S. Army. This fall, he plans to tackle his first marathon on behalf of the Pat Tillman Foundation, which has had a substantial impact on Ritchell’s life.

During his time in the Army, Ritchell served as part of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers must be able to run two miles in under 12 minutes, and today, Ritchell aims to keep his pace under 7:00 miles while gradually adding distance over time.

Ritchell had always intended to join the armed forces one day, with his sights set on the Marines in particular. When Pat Tillman, a former NFL player for the Arizona Cardinals who left his professional football career to join the U.S. Army after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, died while serving in Afghanistan, Ritchell found himself captivated by Tillman’s life and story.

“If I can run six miles in under 7:00, my goal next month is to run eight miles in under 7:00,” Ritchell says. “I’m uber-competitive. I expect a lot from my body.”

“Ever since he passed, I started looking more into his life and loving everything I read about him,” Ritchell says. “I was so impressed with who he was as a human being. He’s the main reason why I joined the Army, not the Marines.” 26

MyChiCagoathlEtE.CoM

Last year, Ritchell began fundraising for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses, when he participated in Ragnar Relay Chicago, running from Madison, WI to Chicago over the course of 19 hours in a relay-style race. It was his first race in quite some time, but this year plans to take his running and fundraising to the next level at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

While Pat Tillman’s life had a notable impact on Ritchell, he also particularly supports the mission of the foundation that honors Tillman’s memory. “A lot of foundations are raising money for veterans and it’s great and definitely necessary, but one of the reasons I love the Pat Tillman Foundation so much is that they’re investing in veterans as ambassadors of a better world,” Ritchell says. “It’s not just funding, and I think that’s really great.” Ritchell’s belief in what the Pat Tillman Foundation does ultimately inspired him to take on the marathon this year. “I really wanted to raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation,” Ritchell says. “I read about their mission and love the people who work there. … I like to have a reason to do something, so even when it’s not fun, I have motivation to do it.”

Youth Triathlon Season Do you know a kid who loves to run, swim and bike? Youth triathlon season has started, and kids love the variety and feeling of accomplishment earned by doing a triathlon. Before signing Junior up for their first triathlon, however, consider these thoughts. Required Skill Level Kids need to be able to swim, bike and run the race distance with strength before they will enjoy a triathlon. Many parents make the mistake of entering their kids into a triathlon before they can confidently swim. I’ve seen this happen at almost every youth triathlon, and many of those terrified kids will never again want to line up at a youth triathlon starting line. Kids also need cycling skills before taking on a triathlon. If your child crashes hard during his or her first triathlon, he or she may decide that triathlon is not for them. Wait until your kids can complete all three disciplines strongly to ensure that your young racer will have a safe and positive first experience. Equipment and Supportive Parents Supportive, positive parents make a major difference for a young triathlete at their race. Smile, stay calm, hug your kids and tell them how proud you are of their effort. Focus on fun rather than time or results, whether or not your child does really well. If your kid focuses on fun, they will want to do another race in the future. For equipment, young triathletes need a safe bike, helmet, swimsuit, goggles and running shoes. Choosing Good Youth Triathlons Check out myracepal.com for a listing of area triathlons with a youth focus. Some adult races allow young

competitors, but chose a kids-only race if at all possible. Safety, clear course markings, swim lifeguard support, bike course marshals and finish line fun all make for excellent kids’ triathlons. The race distance should be ageappropriate. For kids 10 and under, the swim should cover about 100 yards, the bike should be two to four miles and the run distance shouldn’t exceed one mile. Talk to the race director ahead of time and make sure that your child will have fun and be safe. Consider Joining a Team Several excellent youth triathlon teams call the Chicago area home. If you go to a youth race, you will see kids wearing trisuits from different teams. Talk to the teams to find out if any hold practices near your town. Youth triathlon is fantastic when kids become part of a team. Area teams go on to compete for team and individual awards at the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championships on July 30-31 in West Chester, Ohio. MuckFest Ms

Aside from providing a broad audience of participants an opportunity to compete in a 5K race with over 20 obstacles, MuckFest MS dedicates itself to finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. In fact, 100 percent of its fundraising dollars support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In 2015 alone, over 40,000 participants raised more than $3 million, adding to the nearly $23 million raised since the event began. “MuckFest MS attracts a diverse array of people from all walks of life, many of whom have never participated in a mud obstacle event before,” Jim Hennessey, director of consumer marketing at Event 360, an event management team that produces MuckFest MS in partnership with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, says. “Some are motivated to help someone close to them that has been touched by MS, while some just want to get together with their friends and have a blast.” Eleven cities, including Grayslake, currently host MuckFest MS events. To encourage runners’ friends and family members to attend, each event provides spectators the best possible view of the obstacles, including the Flying Muckers (which features a 35-foot zip line), Spill Hill (a muddy hill) and Skid Mark (a muddy pit). “The obstacles are also designed for any athletic level, from first-timers to endurance athletes,” Hennessey says.

Mudderella

As a member of the Tough Mudder, Inc. family, Mudderella provides participants a five- to seven-mile-long obstacle mud run course created for women, by women.

34

June/July 2016

MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

Each of Mudderella’s obstacles tests participants’ agility, balance, strength and teamwork, as women of all athletic abilities come together to finish the race. “It is a non-timed, noncompetitive event that encourages women to work as a team, celebrate their strengths and overcome obstacles together in a fun, social setting,” Erica Pollack, event director for Mudderella, says. “The obstacles are designed with women in mind, but they’re still challenging because women deserve an awesome workout.” This year, five Mudderella events take place across the United States, one of which will occur in Grayslake. Women make up about 95 percent of the field, but men are also encouraged to participate in support of their family members or friends. “Mudderella is an event that’s totally unique from any other type of workout and it may inspire women to try other fitness challenges as well,” Pollack says. “Participants walk away feeling truly accomplished.”

spartan race

The Spartan Race currently has four distances—Sprint (3+ miles), Super (8+ miles), Beast (12+ miles) and Ultra Beast (26+ miles)—for individuals and three team events—the Hurricane Heat, 12 Hour Hurricane Heat and the Agoge—with a variety of obstacles designed to mentally and physically challenge participants. “The trifecta, which is when someone completes Sprint, Super and Beast distance races in a calendar year, is a big part of our brand, with thousands vying to join the ‘Trifecta Tribe’ every year,” Joe DiStefano, direct of fitness and training for the Spartan Race, says.

TRAIN FOR THE BEST RESULTS Cardio and Strength. Aside from typical cardio and strength exercises, Gardner recommends that participants consider high knees, in which they raise their knees as high as possible with each step and then rapidly switch their feet and use their arms as if they were running, and squats. “For squats, runners should stand upright with their feet flat, shoulder width apart, and their arms down their sides,” Gardner says. “They can then lower their bodies toward the floor, push their hips back and down and bend their knees, prior to pushing through their heels to return to the top position.” Core. In addition to stretching their glutes, lower back and hamstrings, participants can also strengthen their core with opposite toe crunch and hip press exercises. “For opposite toe crunches, runners should lie flat on their backs and slowly raise their right legs and left arms up, while reaching for their right feet with their left arms,” Pollack says. “After they complete reps on one side, they can then switch sides.”

Interval Training. To improve their speed as they prepare for obstacle course events, runners should also consider interval training. “Intervals encompass a variety of workouts that involve low- to high-intensity periods, followed by rest or recovery periods. For example, rather than jogging a few miles, runners can split up a half-hour workout into a few walks or jogs that last a couple minutes, as well as some half-minute sprints,” Gardner says. “These exercises’ various intensity levels are similar to the obstacles runners will face on obstacle courses.”

“To complete hip press exercises, runners should again lie flat on their backs, but with their knees bent,” Pollack says. “Their feet should be one foot away from their hips. They should then press their hips up, so that they contract their glutes, and then slowly lower their hips back to the ground to contract their abs.”

“Over the years, I have found that participants are pretty evenly split between current and former athletes looking to challenge themselves, as well as people who have never participated in an athletic event before.” — Brian Alexander

In fact, Spartan Race has attracted so many participants that it now hosts races in over 25 countries, including the United States. On June 11, Chicagoland residents will have an opportunity to participate in two of the races, the Sprint and the Super, in Richmond. “Over the years, I have found that participants are pretty evenly split between current and former athletes looking to challenge themselves, as well as people who have never participated in an athletic event before,” Brian Alexander, a coach at Niles’s CrossFit Illumine who recently completed a Spartan Race coaching course, says. “It can be a gateway sport for many, as I have seen people inspired to branch out and compete in ultramarathons or run their first 10K races.”

Tough Mudder

As Tough Mudder continues to attract new and repetitive participants alike, it has recently introduced obstacles like the Block Ness Monster, in which Mudders have to push, pull and roll their way through 60 feet of rotating barriers, as well as an event series known as the Tough Mudder Half, a five-mile course with over a dozen obstacles. Over 2 million people, from first-timers to fitness gurus, have participated

so far. As a result, more than 100 events will take place around the world from March to November. “Tough Mudder events aren’t races, but challenges, which is one of the main factors that have contributed to their popularity,” Gottshall says. “The events are untimed, so participants can focus on working together to overcome the obstacle challenges.” Each event consists of 10- to 12-mile-long courses designed to test participants’ strength and stamina. Tough Mudder also values teamwork and camaraderie, as participants from all walks of life collaborate to help each other finish the events. “The courses were designed for participants of all athletic backgrounds,” Gottshall says. “Participants are involved for a variety of reasons, whether it’s to take on a new fitness challenge, celebrate a personal milestone or have fun with their friends and colleagues.”

Warrior dash

Since 2009, over 2.5 million people have participated in the Warrior Dash, the United States’ first nationwide obstacle course race series.

Athletes of all abilities can participate in the 5K, since its 12 obstacles break up the distance into small segments. “The majority of our participants are first-time 5K runners,” Lauren Gardner, public relations manager for the Warrior Dash, says. “By starting with something achievable—like a Warrior Dash—fitness becomes more fun to ease into as a lifestyle. Many of our participants return year after year, and increase their abilities each time.” Of the 12 obstacles that participants encounter, three especially stand out: Muddy Mayhem (participants crawl under barbed wire through a 100-foot-long mud pit), Mud Mounds (runners climb over a tall mud mound and then slide down into a muddy pit) and Goliath (participants run up two stories, and then slide down a 30-foot high slide). “Our first Warrior Dash took place in the Chicago area in 2009, and we have had one outside of the city every year since,” Gardner states. “Red Frog Events, the event production company behind Warrior Dash, is actually a Chicago-based company, so our Illinois race location has always had a special place in our hearts.”

STARVED ROCK STATE PARK The official website starvedrockstatepark.org boasts that the park has been voted the number one attraction in Illinois, making it the tourism crown jewel of the state. International visitors to Illinois find their way here, and it is common to hear several different languages as you hike the busy trails. Hiking: Starved Rock State Park boasts over 12 miles of paved hiking trails from easy to moderate. Count on several wooden stairways to keep you in shape as you trek to 18 different canyons, 14 of which feature waterfalls. Bring footwear with good traction; it can be slippery in spots. Canoe/Kayak: Starved Rock Adventures offers canoe rentals right in the park from May to October so you can paddle up the Illinois River, water levels and weather permitting. Or you may prefer to paddle the nearby Fox River, or raft on the mighty Vermillion River: as close as you can get to white water in Illinois. BIKING IN WISCONSIN The League of American Bicyclists ranks Wisconsin among the top 10 biking states in the nation. The state is home to literally hundreds of miles of trails, from paved routes to dirt and gravel trails, and is credited for being the first state to establish a rails-to-trails project, the Elroy-Sparta Trail that was converted in 1965. Elroy-Sparta Trail: This trail is one of the most popular trails in the country. It’s mostly crushed limestone, and traverses through three tunnels (one is nearly three-quarters of a mile and completely dark, headlamp recommended) and five towns, each with a charm of its own. Traveling eastward from Sparta to Elroy is the uphill direction, for those who want to add a slightly perceptible workout to their journey. Riders 16 years or older must purchase a daily or annual pass to use the trail; hikers and snowmobilers can use the trail for free. The Elroy-Sparta Trail is part of the 101 State Trail System that starts with the 400 Trail in Reedsburg, continues westward with the Elroy-Sparta Trail, then the LaCrosse River Trail, and finally stretches to the Mississippi River on the Great River Trail. Accommodations: All the info you need can be found at elroy-sparta-trail.com. For bike rentals, click on “Shuttles.” Links to all four trails can be found at bike4trails.com. CAMBA: Chequamegon (pronounced, “shuh-WAH-mah-gon”) Area Mountain Bike Association refers to the CAMBA Trail System as the “Single Track Capital” of the Midwest, and its mileage certainly helps that claim: over 300 miles of trails offer “striking beauty and peaceful solitude.” CAMBA stretches across Bayfield and Sawyer counties, with southern Bayfield County’s glacial moraines providing plenty of ideal mountain biking action. All the information you need can be found on the CAMBA website, including a large selection of lodging and camping choices in the Cable, Hayward, and Ashland areas. cambatrails.org. WISCONSIN BIKING GUIDE: If the Elroy-Sparta Trail or the CAMBA do not quench your cycling fix, you have nearly endless number of choices with the Wisconsin Biking Guide. bit.ly/ WIBikeGuide

HEARTLAND SpA

heartlandspa.com | Lake Geneva, WI | 262.248.2157 Located in the Bella Vista Suites of Lake Geneva, the Heartland Spa offers a variety of yoga classes, African dance and aqua classes as well as “Pound Fit,” a full body cardio, conditioning and strength training workout in which you “become the music.” Help yourself of one of several all-inclusive packages from a two-nighter to the seven night Pamper & Thrive! 7-Night Boot Camp. “There’s nobody else like us in the Midwest,” owner Harold Lebovic says. He emphasizes that the spa is not only “a true natural health destination,” but also “one of the most affordable choices for wellness spas anywhere. Being this close to Chicago and other cities means less time traveling—you typically have an extra two days to work out.” Heartland Spa also has plans to take advantage of the 21-mile scenic public trail that circles Lake Geneva, passing by the town’s many famous mansions. Information on the trail can be found at walktalkgawk.com.

pADDLING SpORTS IN WISCONSIN The Wisconsin River, located just northwest of Madison, provides paddling opportunities through shallow waters in a mostly undeveloped area, with shoreline and island opportunities for camping and fishing. Local outfitter Wisconsin River Outings offers a wide range of choices, ranging from a half-day paddle to more than four days on the river, with opportunities to make it wild or mild depending on your preference. WILD Sauk City, Sauk prairie Area: Sauk City is where the party starts. It gets busy in this section and has a reputation for its “Spring Break” atmosphere, complete with nude beach along the way. Here you can park and paddle right away. A bus will pick you up in the afternoon at the end of your trip and take you back up river to your car. MILD

Boscobel, Driftless Area: This is the heart of fly fishing country, so it stands to reason this will be the quieter paddling choice. You can pick your own sand bar for camping, water levels permitting. Wisconsin River Outings will shuttle you to the start of your paddle so that you will arrive at your vehicle at the finish. Wisconsin River Outings canoe-camping.com 608.375.5300 pESHTIGO RIVER Paddling enthusiasts can head to the Peshtigo River in northeast Wisconsin, known especially for the Roaring Rapids, a four-mile stretch of class IV and V rapids. Beginners need not fear—other segments along the water are less daunting, but still provide challenge and scenery. Local outfitters can provide beginners and experts alike with canoe and kayak rentals, shuttle service, guided rafting trips and camping options. MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

When users flock back to the Lakefront Trail this summer, they’ll find a new experience at a critical entrance that has caused problems for cyclists and pedestrians for years.

The city has reconstructed the trail and grounds at the Fullerton entrance, one of the busiest sections of the Lakefront Trail, adding nearly six acres of parkland by filling in the lakefront in a $31.5 million project funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District. The reconfiguration provides two separate trails for pedestrians and cyclists, a longtime goal of cycling advocates. MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

“now we’re seeing political leadership that wants better biking and walking infrastructure in their wards,” he says. “It’s no longer, ‘Do we want it?’ but rather it’s leaders arguing that they want it now, faster and more of it.”

Kyle Whitehead, campaign director of the active Transportation alliance, says the organization ultimately hopes to separate users the entire length of the 18.5-mile trail. “We’d love to see that the full length of the trail, but we recognize that practically, it’s going to come in segments over time, so we prioritize the segments that are most congested, with the most conflicts,” he says. The Lakefront Trail sees more than 30,000 people accessing the trail every day during summer months, and more than 100,000 on busy summer weekends. While the changes at Fullerton will provide a much better experience, users will still find a logjam at Navy Pier this summer as construction continues on the Navy Pier Flyover project, a $60 million project scheduled for completion in 2018. Until then, a complicated, congested detour guides users clumsily across Illinois street and Grand avenue from the north side of the Chicago River to the south. When completed, the flyover will allow trail users to smoothly bypass the congestion caused at the entrance to Navy Pier, the Midwest’s most popular tourist attraction, on an elevated 16-foot wide pedestrian path for cyclists and walkers. “The Navy Pier Flyover is huge,” Whitehead says. “That’s been a choke point that’s been known for years.” With the Fullerton entrance now complete, and the flyover at Navy Pier progressing, Whitehead says active Trans next hopes to see separated traffic at Ohio Street Beach and Oak Street Beach. When the Active Transportation Alliance released the 2013 Friends of the Lakefront Trail Public Engagement Report, separate spaces for walking, biking and running came in as users’ number one priority. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced March 22 that the city would create separate lanes for bikers and joggers from Fullerton Avenue to Ohio street, and from 31st street to 51st street. steven Vance, an urban planner and cycling advocate who launched the blog Grid Chicago with John Greenfield in 2010, then Streetsblog Chicago in 2013, says that while these large projects have sparked enthusiasm, the city is perilously behind on routine maintenance. “You can see how this is the case because instead of maintaining and repairing broken parts of the Lakefront Trail, the Park District paints over it with yellow paint,” he says. “And some of the yellow painted areas have been in that condition for years. They make it really easy to see how far behind they are.” Whitehead says major change has taken place in the city’s approach to cycling and pedestrian transportation.

But Whitehead pointed out that improving life for non-motorized transportation users in Chicago isn’t all about high-profile infrastructure projects. Improved signage and markings could go a long way in making paths safer and easier to use, he says. For instance, adding pavement markings to the Lakefront Trails would make way-finding easier and is often more effective than signage. Signage should have simple, specific messages at points along the trail, rather than a small-print laundry list of rules at trail entrances. “It’s important to think about all of the different types of people who use the trail, from those using it for training to those commuting, to inexperienced cyclists on vacation,” Whitehead says.

ail r t e h T n o g trainin The Lakefront Trail is home to dozens of 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons every summer. It’s also home to many more daily training runs. Among those who train on the trail:

ChiCago area runners assoCiation

www.cararuns.org The granddaddy of Chicago running clubs, CARA claims 9,000 members.

ChiCago enduranCe sports

www.chicagoendurancesports.com Longtime training club hosts runs on the trail several days each week.

CloCktower runners www.clocktowerrunners.org Saturday runs at Waveland Ave.

linColn park paCers Saturday runs on the lakefront.

d a o r e h t f o s rule With thousands of people using the Lakefront trail every day with a wide range of cycling and running backgrounds, there’s no way to eliminate all conflicts. But following a few simple rules will improve the trail experience for everyone. 1.

Do not travel more than two abreast when the trail is busy

2.

Move to the right to make way for faster traffic

3.

Do not stop suddenly in the middle of the trail

4.

Slow down in congested areas

5.

Use passing signals to notify others (use a bell, or say “on your left”)

6.

Don’t pass by veering into the lane of oncoming traffic

7.

Yield to others when crossing or entering the trail

8.

Leash your dogs or other pets

9.

If you’re walking or biking slowly, stay to the right to allow faster traffic to pass

Wisconsin Marathon and Half Marathon

MAY 7, 2 0 1 6 | K EN O S H A , W I By Ashley Nolan

Kenosha is a darling town right on Lake Michigan, just an hour from Chicago. As we walked over to the starting line, the sun peaked through the clouds over the lake, but to the southwest dark clouds were emerging and it was quickly noticeable that a storm was rolling in. Temperatures began to lower and the wind began to pick-up. We wondered if this storm would cause a delay in the start, but the national anthem carried on and no sooner we were off! The first few miles started south and then headed back up north. On our way up north was when my love/hate relationship with the wind began. When going north, the wind was very much against us. We are talking sand in the eyes, in the socks, in the hair and everywhere else you could imagine. Luckily, the turnaround at around 7.5 miles gave us some relief and the wind was at our backs for the next… wait a minute, now the wind began hitting from all directions!

Sock Hop Hustle 5k

M AY 8 , 2 0 1 6 | O LY MPIA FIELDS , IL

Olympia Fields Park District celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Sock Hop Hustle 5K on May 8. The course travels through several local parks, including Bicentennial, Maynegaite and Sgt. Means, and runners are encouraged to dress in 50’s era fashion. A costume contest was held after the race in Sgt. Means Park, along with a beer tent and other activities for kids.

As we headed back south, passing the start/finish area, it was time to come to terms with the fact we were only halfway through. The course took you along the beautiful Lake Michigan coast and made turns through Kenosha neighborhoods. At mile 19, we hit the turnaround and headed back towards the start. Bless all those wonderful volunteers who patiently handed out water and gels at mile 19. However, the wind was back with vengeance and made the next 5 miles feel like a relentless wind tunnel. Bring it on! As we made our way passed the harbors and through downtown Kenosha, I could hear the announcer cheering runners through the chute. We were close! Really close! Through the chute we went and with the cheers ringing my ears, I no longer could feel the wind. We finished this early season, windy and beautiful marathon. Name

the proBleM Repetitive motions of day-to-day life cause muscles to contract and relax. Over time, these contractions become shorter. As they become shorter, muscles and fascia become chronically contracted, forming knots, congested tissue, and muscle tightness leading to dysfunction, disability and pain.

DC Wellness Center offers both structural and functional care with gentle corrective spinal and whole body care, physiotherapy, functional nutrition, postural care, exercise rehab and ART. We also offer comprehensive functional assessments, gait analysis, custom foot orthotics designed specifically for athletes, lab studies, body compositions, personal coaching, performance care and radiology onsite. We also offer Boot Camps and personal training.

The health of muscles is directly affected by tightness in the muscles. Blood and lymph volume is drastically reduced in hyper-contracted muscle tissue. Tremendous congestion and inflammation accumulates in the tissue from cellular metabolic wastes, all due to ineffective circulation. As this stagnation progresses, the tissue suffers increasingly destructive pathological changes.

Dr. Michael Davenport has been a Sports Chiropractic Physician for over 20 years and has been involved in the Chicago running and triathlon community for almost 30 years. He is about to run the Chicago Marathon for the 25th time this fall. He continues to compete in ultramarathons and Ironman races. He is training for the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon this fall for the 6th time and is hoping to qualify for the World Championship in Hawaii for 2017. He has been involved in several local organizations that promote healthy lifestyles, community involvement through training and competition. Dan Cavanagh is a NASM certified personal trainer and is an active competitor in races ranging from 5ks to marathons and half Ironman Triathlons. DeloS therapy Delos Therapy involves applied systematic pressure to the entire length of the muscle to stretch muscular fibrils, leading to elevated vascular and lymphatic circulation, improving the vital health of the affected tissue, eliminating pain and restoring function. hoW We Differ froM... Physical therapy Conventional techniques of stretching and strengthening are ineffective for hyper-contracted muscle tissue. Delos Therapy addresses the root cause of the pain by micro-stretching muscles and fascia. chiropractic Rather than manipulating bones that may be out of alignment, Delos therapy addresses the muscle tissue, which is the force that is causing the skeletal misalignment in the first place. massage Compared to Delos, regular massage is a superficial technique that doesn’t optimally address muscular tightness. Even deep tissue and sports massage don’t hold tissue in a stretched position long enough to be fully effective. conventional stretching Tight tissue doesn’t stretch, so during conventional stretching, only healthy fibers are stretched. As a result, flexibility often increases, but pain and stiffness don’t diminish. 215 S. Northwest Hwy., Ste. 102A, Barrington, IL 60010 847-842-8070 | info@vannesschiro.com | vannesschiro.com Do You Keep Running Into Problems? Runners often experience a number of seemingly unrelated problems that come and go creating pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Those problems could be: • Plantar Fasciitis, Patellar Tendonitis • Shin Splints, IT-Band Syndrome • Piriformis Syndrome, Hip Tightness • Low Back pain, Neck/Shoulder Pain • Chronic Hamstring Tightness Are these different names for the same problem? The overlooked fact is that these problems often have the same underlying cause—a foot-knee-hip imbalance.

USE CODE CA FOR 15% OFF

Running involves a repeated weight transfer from one leg to the other that requires the foot, knee and hip to maintain consistent alignment. During the single leg stance, if the arch or knee collapses or if the hips tilt to one side, there will be repetitive stress transmitted throughout the body that can cause any of the symptoms listed above. Readiness to Run Assessment The Step-Down Assessment determines if the problem is at the feet, knees or hips and predicts the likelihood that a running injury or symptom will occur. When performing this assessment, concentrate on one area at a time (foot, knee, hip). It is useful to have someone take a picture or video of you performing this assessment. Stand on a slightly elevated surface with your feet under your hips. The knee of the stance leg will bend slightly as you reach the foot of the non-weight bearing leg down towards the ground. The foot of the reaching leg will point down, hovering above the ground. It is best to perform this assessment barefoot to observe the position of the foot. Here is what you should look for: 1 FOOT: The foot of the stance leg should be pointing straight forward. Note if the arch collapses in or rolls out during the assessment.

#

# 2 KNEE: Note your ability to keep the knee of the stance leg directly over the foot as you step down. Note if the knee collapses in or out.

3 HIP: Note your ability to keep your hips level, torso upright, and shoulders level as you reach the foot forward.

If you were unable to maintain a neutral arch, keep the knee in line with the foot and maintain level hips throughout the full movement—your foot-knee-hip alignment is off and running is likely to produce symptoms. Injury Free Running Foot-knee-hip weakness or misalignment is responsible for many conditions that can be chronic and difficult to manage clinically without a full understanding of the factors involved. This explains why just treating plantar fasciitis or IT- band syndrome doesn’t fully address the causative factors. Free Running Assessment Dr. Van Ness, a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, and his team have been helping Barrington area runners stay active for more than 18 years with chiropractic care, corrective exercise, sports massage, assisted stretching, digital gait analysis and custom sport orthotics.
