Ben Beach to Become first runner to finish 50 consecutive Boston marathons By: Mark Buciak, QCC
On April 17, Ben Beach, 67, will be racing his 50th consecutive Boston Marathon, and will become the first athlete to ever run 50 straight years at the same marathon. Because Beach has run more Boston Marathons than anyone else, he leads the Boston’s Quarter Century Club (QCC) list, where a runner has to run 25 or more consecutive Boston Marathons to be a member. After the 2017 Boston, he will become the charter member of a new club: The Half Century Club. “I’m excited about it and grateful to all those who have helped me keep the streak going,” Beach says. “I just take it one year at a time, planning to run as long as I can.” Beach has been running for 52 years; throughout those years, he has finished 77 marathons, and has a personal best of 2:26:29 in the 1981 New York City Marathon. As a teenager in the mid 1960’s, Beach realized that sports such as football, baseball and basketball were not his forte, due to being only 5’2”. While this was disappointing 14

at first, Beach realized he was built to be a marathoner. His first marathon was the 1968 Boston Marathon, when qualifying times were not required. He remembers it being very hot, because the start time was at noon, but came in with an impressive time of 3:23:50. “My clearest memory is the thrill of approaching the finish line and hearing my name announced,” Beach recalls. “It is a unique, point-to-point course with a long and distinguished history. The spectators are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and the volunteers are outstanding.” However, the ride hasn’t been a total breeze for Beach; he has been running with the condition dystonia for several years, which involves involuntary muscle contractions. Although it’s slowed him down from his sub 2:30 times, he has never let it stop him. “I wish someone would find a cure for dystonia so I could regain my stride and run a decent time,” Beach adds. “But I’m lucky nothing has ever knocked me out. I’m also fortunate to have a wife and kids who have put up with my marathon training without complaint and have enthusiastically supported the streak.” Beach grew up in Mt. Kisco, NY and now lives in Bethesda, MD. Watch Beach make history on April 17.

2016 Bank of America chicago Marathon charity Runners Raised $16.9 Million The Bank of America Chicago Marathon today announced that more than 10,000 runners raised $16.9 million through the 2016 Charity Program. Since the charity program was officially established in 2002, more than 106,000 runners have raised over $167 million for local, national and global causes. “Our Charity Program speaks to the power and spirit of the running community, and one of the greatest legacies of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is the significant impact the Charity Program has
had on local, national and global causes,” said Carey Pinkowski, executive race director. “Since 2002, charities have increased their revenue and visibility, and we have welcomed new runners across our finish line. We are proud that one of the premier hallmarks on race day is seeing thousands of charity runners striding together on the streets of Chicago to make a difference in the world.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the 15th anniversary of the official Charity Program. The 2017 Charity Program is underway with more than 170 charities participating. Runners who register to run with an official charity will be required to raise a minimum of $1,500.

Pedestrians, Bicyclists to Get Separate Lakefront Trails by 2018 The days of runners being startled by bikers, and cyclists weaving through pedestrians on the Lakefront Path are over; a new plan will create two separate and “distinct” lakefront trails for bicyclists and pedestrians by 2018. Billionaire Ken Griffin, who is friends with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, donated $12 million to the Chicago Park District for the trail separation project, according to the Chicago Sun Times. The separation aims to alleviate congestion and improve safety for all users. Details for the two trails are already in place: the bike trail will be located closest to Lake Shore Drive, will

be 12 feet wide and made of asphalt. The pedestrian trail will be 20 feet wide with 14 feet of asphalt and 6 feet of “soft surface mix” on either side. In March 2016, Emanuel announced plans to repave seven miles of the path with a clear north and south divider; the path was to be separated for bikers and pedestrians from Fullerton to Ohio and 31st to 51st. This project is nearly completed. All of the mayor’s plans were part of the “Building on Burnham” project to improve Chicago Parks and create more space in the city. Emanuel says the lakefront trail is one of the busiest in the nation, as more than 100,000 people use the lakefront trail a day on summer weekends, according to a recent study by the Chicago Area Runners Association and the Active Transportation Alliance. Now, it will no longer be “like rush hour,” Emanuel tells the Sun Times.

Kyle Larson, mostly known for his involvement with Fleet Feet Sports, has been a competitive runner since high school. Upon graduation, he attended University of Minnesota Duluth where he ran on the cross country and track teams and worked at a local running store. After receiving his degree, he moved to Chicago and began his career with Fleet Feet, and is now the coach of the Fleet Feet/Nike Racing Team. “Being part of a team is really the best way to improve as a runner and you meet so many awesome people through running,” Larson says. Not only does Larson enjoy running, but he’s really good at it; in 2016, he was the first Illinois finisher of the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:34:15, and he recently won the first annual Chi-Town Rise and Shine 5K. His 5K PR is 15:34, and he PRed at the 2016 Lakefront 10 Miler with a time of 52:15.
Kate DeProsPeris
Kate DeProsperis has always had her eye on sports, and was involved since a young age; in grade school, DeProsperis and her twin sister tried out for both the basketball and volleyball teams, and were cut from both. Although unfortunate, the two wanted to stay active, so they turned to cross country because it was a non-cut sport, and the rest is history. Now, DeProsperis runs for the Jenny Spangler Racing/Saucony team, and just achieved her personal best in the marathon in December at the California International Marathon with a time of 2:42:49. She also got her half marathon PR during the second half of that race at 1:20:36. Her other PRs consist of an 18:15 5K, a 29:52 8K and a 38:30 10K. “I look forward to the 2017 season to chase some of those shorter distance PRs and aim for a fall marathon to Qualify for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials when the qualification window opens.”

Should Runners Focus on Form? TIPS FROM CHICAGO’S LARGEST TRAINING PROGRAM
I
t seems to me that virtually every sport focuses on refining and even perfecting their technique or form. However, for many years, distance runners have largely ignored their running form and focused primarily on increasing work capacity. Now, some runners are focusing on gait enhancement, but are experiencing mixed results. Some are running faster and more economically, while others are actually suffering injuries while altering their form. Given these mixed results, should distance runners focus on improving their running form?

My opinion is YES! Running with a more economical gait can lead to faster race performances. For instance, if you improve your stride efficiency by one hundredth of a second (0.01 second) in each step, you can shave eight to nine minutes off your marathon time. More importantly, improving your running form can lower your injury risk, which is very significant given that over 50 percent of runners are sidelined by running related injuries each year. Optimizing your movement patterns will help load your musculoskeletal system more efficiently and avoid common overuse injuries associated with running. While it is exciting that runners are increasingly focusing on improving their gait, many fail to realize positive benefits due to incorrect training modifications. The key is in employing the correct process and striving for small, gradual improvements. After spending more than 20 years learning from many coaches and physical therapists, here is the process that I currently employ: • Mobility/Flexibility: the range of motion of a specific joint through different planes. Do you have the required mobility in your hips, ankles and toes to run (slow/fast; uphill/downhill)? If not, you need to focus on resolving these issues first and foremost. Forcing a body with movement restrictions to run more efficiently can lead to injury. Also, progressing your training with improper movement patterns will further ingrain bad habits. • Stability/Strength: ability to control the forces placed on your musculoskeletal system upon each impact and transferring this energy into efficient running. Do you have the required stability in your hips and feet to handle running (slow, fast, downhill)? If not, you need to focus on building stable hips/glutes and feet before you can expect to see significant improvements in your running form. • Gait (Form) Retraining: Once your mobility restrictions are resolved, you can begin gait retraining while continuing to address stability issues. There are lots of running drills/cues out there, but here are two that have worked well with my athletes:
• Forward lean: Running with a forward lean will help you better recruit your powerful gluteus maximus muscle. If you are currently running with a backward lean, focus on gradually moving towards a forward lean over weeks/ months to better enable your body to adapt. • Stride rate: Increasing your stride rate to approximately 180 steps per minute or higher will help you land mid-foot and under your center of gravity (=less braking forces). Focus on gradually increasing your steps per minute over weeks/months to better enable your body to adapt. If you are a young runner (or young training age), you may adapt to more rapid changes in your running form. It is ideal to begin refi ning your running gait as a young runner. For older runners (or older training age), you need to take a more gradual approach. It will take time to build strength and efficiency running with new movement patterns. Focus on moving better instead of perfectly. We can run fast and injury free with imperfections. Lastly, I recommending seeking out some assistance (i.e. running coach, physical therapist) to help you smartly optimize your running form. If you don’t have access to a qualified person, educate yourself and have a friend take video of your running form to better understand your current movement patterns. Charity: Ride for 3 Reasons While most 18-year-olds’ focus on graduating high school and getting into college, Jan Gierlach is adding “cross-country bike ride” to his to-do list. In fact, Gierlach graduated from Barrington High School in December, and in February, he left for a 3,300 mile ride from San Diego, Calif. to St. Augustine, Fla. He plans to be back in time for graduation, and will attend college in the fall. Although Gierlach’s ride is unaccompanied, his purpose is not solely for accomplishment; this adventure is a popular one created through the charity Ride for 3 Reasons, which helps raise funds and build awareness of three causes: ALS, cancer and hospice. Gierlach was introduced to the charity through founder Bob Lee, and because he feels a personal connection with each cause, he knew he had to do it one day. 22

“My grandfather passed of lung cancer, a dear family friend passed from ALS and my grandma received hospice treatment,” Gierlach said. “It’s much more meaningful to ride with a charitable connection, and Ride for 3 Reasons was directly in line with my values and passions.” Planning for his journey began last year, much of which focused on fundraising. Gierlach raised over $600,000 for the three causes, and while many assume that part of the money goes towards his trip, he clarified 100 percent of the proceeds go towards the causes. “None of it goes towards my ride, but it’s been nice because I have some corporate sponsors with gear and stuff, like my bike,” he explained. “A local shop in Crystal Lake split the cost with Salsa Cycles for my bike. It’s an awesome bike, perfect for what I’m doing.”
With contributions from other companies, Gierlach got pretty much everything he needed for his ride, which he is very grateful for. “The safety of the ride is hugely dependent on the quality of the gear,” he added. Gierlach estimates the trip to take him about two and a half months; he plans on riding 50 miles a day, six days a week, totaling 300 miles a week. “It’s not a race for me, it’s an experience, Gierlach said. “I’ll see a part of the country I’ve never seen and I want to use every opportunity to see the local sites and talk to people. A Pre-Season Checklist By Bryan McVey
There are many things a cyclist needs to pay attention to throughout the winter to ensure they have the best shot at a healthy and successful upcoming race season. Now that we are on the downslope of the cold days, the time has come to start shifting training and ensure the springtime pre-race preparation line items are getting checked off the to-do list. This way, race day number one of your personal campaign can begin with a clear mind and sound body. Here’s a quick starting guide to get that pre-race season checklist complete! 1. Race Diet: Considering you already have an idea of what does and doesn’t work with your body when it comes to diet and nutrition, you should still prepare your stomach for the exact food you will put in it during exhaustive efforts. If you haven’t already, start using the same race nutrition during your remaining hard workouts to again adapt your digestive system for what’s to come. 2. Bike Maintenance: Winters can be extremely 24

hard on a bicycle; corrosion from street salt and even sweat can wreak havoc on cables, housings, drivetrains and bolts. Ensure to have your machine properly cleaned, tuned and lubed before you roll up to that first starting line. You can’t win a race if the bike malfunctions! 3. Gear Organization: Nothing makes racing easier than to forget about everything else except the task at hand. Ensure you are not carrying unneeded mental stress onto the racecourse, which will ultimately negatively affect your performance capability. This can be accomplished by having all your gear organized early. Take an inventory of your clothes, spare parts, race day nutrition, and come up with your own system for having everything accessible to be easily packed the day before each race. 4. Logistical Planning: A good race can be spoiled by not being able to find a new venue, getting there late, skipping a warm-up and cramping up before the real racing even begins! When planning your season calendar, or anytime you add a new race to it, make sure to locate the starting line and best parking spots
on the map, and figure out how long it will take to get there. These simple things will greatly decrease chances of becoming distracted and losing focus on the race at hand. 5. Race Meditation: A racing mindset is very different than a training mindset, even on hard training days. You have to come to the line both confident and aggressive; you are no longer racing against just yourself, but rather against everyone around you. If you are mentally prepared to make that switch, your mindset will dictate your results in races when the competition is heated. Start the checklist now, following the order laid out above before the racing season begins. These tips will considerably improve your chances of letting your ability, rather than the myriad of other factors, dictate your results. Winning is not just about who is the strongest person in the race, but rather about who is the most prepared overall. No win is guaranteed to even the most powerful rider. If you tackle each race in a “professional” manner, you can harness the gritty side of cycling and spoil the victories of other riders.

* As winter fades and spring arrives, kids will be ready to start spring activities before the ice clears from the sidewalks. Parents and kids can make the most of the upcoming months of light and warmth with some preseason preparation. Here are some ideas to get kids ready.
Together, you can plan to visit and walk each of your town’s parks or forest preserves over the course of the year. Help them plan family cycling adventures by choosing several destinations each month (for example, riding to a favorite playground).

Ages 8-13
These youngest kids should participate in a variety of opportunities offering playful fun. This can include play dates, playgrounds, family fun, park district activities and more. As you get ready for the warm season, attempt to find ways to get kids outside as much as possible. Here are some things to consider: Swim Prep Make sure your youngest kids are ready and excited for summer days at the pool, vacations at the beach and birthday pool parties by signing them up for swim lessons. Start them as early as six months old in a “Parent and Tot” type class. Younger kids learn to love the water much more naturally and easily than older kids. Bike Prep Your child has grown and matured since last fall and their bikes have been idle. Before it warms up enough to ride, get your kids’ bikes to a bike shop for a basic tune up and size check. Kids outgrow bikes every two to three years. A bike that doesn’t fit will be less safe and comfortable. A bike tune up helps to ensure that tires, brakes, gears and bolts are all maintained and safe. Family Adventure Planning Sessions Let the kids help to plan some regular family activities.

Kids who are in or approaching middle school age are ready to approach sports with more focus. Organized sports and coaching can introduce them to the skills and fitness required. It is best for kids in this age group to try a few sports and to rotate them by different seasons. It is not yet time to focus on just one sport year-round for the great majority of kids. But no matter how busy your child may be with organized sports, make sure to allow them time to be unorganized at play – preferably outside. Let them set the rules for fun and make sure that they get that outside time to be creative that is so important for child development.

Increase the amount and variety of healthy foods in the home; they will be hungry and whole foods will support their growth and sport goals.

JEREMY RIELLEY By: Holly Petrovich
While many know Jeremy Rielley for his consecutive wins of the Chicago Triathlon in 2015 and 2016, what many don’t know is he started his career as a runner just six years ago. In 2010, Rielley ran the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and realized that running wasn’t filling the void of his soccer days at DePauw University in Indiana; he then started swimming and biking, and in 2011, he qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. This August, Rielley is attempting a third consecutive win of the Chicago Triathlon, claiming that would be the ultimate accomplishment. In fact, his favorite memory as a triathlete is when he rounded the corner on the finishing chute of the 2015 race by himself, and seeing his wife and mom cheer him on. “It’s still surreal to say that I’ve won a race that big that’s been going on for so long,” Rielley says. Of the three sports, Rielley says running is his favorite, because that’s what he’s best at. He claims to be worst at swimming, but after more training, he’s starting to enjoy the sport a lot more. “I’m at the point where staring at the black line in the pool isn’t as terrible anymore,” Rielley adds. “I love the challenge of three individual sports because it is up to me whether I wake up to workout, or push myself during that last interval.” In addition to his full-time training, Rielley is a physical education teacher at Dawes and Orrington elementary schools in Evanston. There, he tries to take his mentalities from endurance competitions, and teach the kids that hard work pays off. “Its more about the hidden messages and mental things you go through in training that kids understand in sports,” Rielley says.

In fourth grade, Theresa Peterson loved running, and since then, not much has changed. Peterson’s competitive running career started in high school, though, where she ran on the track and cross country teams at Mother McCauley High School. However, she also was on the basketball team, and ended up getting a scholarship to Columbia University in New York for the sport, and took some time off running. “Honestly, I was a little burnt out, and then I had kids,” Peterson says. Fortunately, former U.S. Olympian Jenny Spangler came into Peterson’s life a few years ago, and recruited her for the running group in the north suburbs. “Somehow, she got me fast and got me competitive,” she adds. “I started doing small races again, and this year I’ll be doing my first Chicago Marathon in 17 years.” While 5K’s tend to be her favorite distance, Peterson says half marathons are a very close second. In fact, her favorite race was the 2016 Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon, where famous distance runners Sarah and Ryan Hall helped her finish as the Master’s champion. Peterson says she is thankful she was able to be reconnected with a sport that has become her true passion; this year, she is participating in the Chicago Area Runner’s Association Circuit for her first time, and is also a part of the Lake Forest - Lake Bluff Running Club. “It clears the mind, it sets a good example for my kids, plus I find comfort in the friendships formed as well as a sense of accomplishment from the hard group workouts with Jenny Spangler,” Peterson reflects. “I may not win as many races any more, but I certainly relish when I can compete and often beat the 20-something year olds. It’s never too late to pursue what makes you happy!”

Shamrock Shuffle8K 2017 BANK OF AMERICA
The streets of Chicago will be a green blur on Sunday, April 2 as runners continue their St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations during the 2017 Annual Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. The race is a tradition to help jump start the running season by looping through 4.97 miles through the heart of downtown. New this year is an untimed two-mile walk, which shares the Grant Park start and finish line with the 8K race, but loops down the lakefront. The walk has a 1,500-person capacity. “The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K is an event that is a true reflection of the Chicago running community,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “Each year, we see the excitement of individuals as they line up at the start line, ready to take on their first road race, tackle a new PR or find a healthy way to continue the St. Patrick’s Day celebration with their family and friends.”

AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR LOCAL ATHLETIC STORES By Holly Petrovich
Running, biking, swimming and triathlons are typically considered pretty individual sports; aside from teams and training groups, an athletes’ success comes from their own time and effort put in. What many overlook, however, is the time and effort put in by local athletic stores each year, helping to ensure athletes have the proper resources to aid in their success. While athletes start thinking about and preparing for a new season at the beginning of the calendar year, local running and sport stores begin their planning way earlier. Sometimes, they’ll see products for spring as early as the June prior, and many stores are already finishing up on their fall 2017 orders. 36

FOOTWEAR, APPAREL AND ACCESSORIES, OH MY! According to Wayne Haworth, who manages apparel and accessories for all five Dick Pond Athletics locations, spring season is from January 1 to June 30, and fall starts July 1 to December 31; for the 2017 spring season, Haworth was looking at product lines last June. “Unfortunately, we don’t really have a clear picture. We look at stuff really early on at the request of the manufacturers, but often times we have to reevaluate our sales from the year before,” Haworth says. “Heading into a season for apparel and footwear buying requires a lot of planning, but accessories are easier because they don’t really change that much.” Living in a four-season state such as Illinois can actually be a challenge when it comes to planning ahead, Kris Hartner, owner of Naperville Running Company (NRC) says. He believes that by vendors making the seasons more accurate, all communities would benefit, especially because many warmer states don’t even buy cold weather gear. In terms of planning orders, a lot of the decisions are based on last season’s numbers; because styles and weather vary, there’s not an exact science to it, Hartner adds, but the choices need some data to back them up. “People don’t realize when you come into a store, we have over 100 different vendors that we work with,” Hartner explains. “Usually about 10 footwear brands, 15 apparel brands and then 10 nutrition brands, along with different magazines and then the health accessories – I think a lot of people expect us to have it all, but we just can’t, we have to make some choices.”

We need to have a good collection, and the challenge is choosing the right stuff.” For Universal Sole, planning in conjunction with the vendors is helpful to get products on the floor sooner, owner Joel Feinberg says. As soon as a new year rolls in, the store puts all the new models out so when spring weather actually comes, athletes have what they need. As far as promoting the new products, however, Universal Sole spreads out the announcements. Because a lot of vendors follow the same schedules, promoting seven new models of shoes at once is overwhelming for both the retailer and the consumers, Feinberg says. “We methodically look at the shoe brands and what’s new and run that each week, and pair it with clothing that comes in,” he adds. “We’re a small store, and we don’t have a budget to run ad campaigns, so we rely heavily on social media, newsletters and blogs.” PUTTING PRODUCTS TO USE Aside from products, local stores are also known for the different events and organized workout groups they host; NRC has an event nearly every weekend during the season, and the weekdays are busy too, Hartner says. In addition to its popular pub runs, NRC has weekly group runs at both locations, and a marathon/half marathon training group. They also host frequent injury prevention clinics, Q&A sessions with various experts, and other fun runs. While they sponsor many events, they don’t host or time races.
In fact, Hartner thinks that having less options make it easier for both the employees and the customers; when there’s too many choices, shoppers get overwhelmed and don’t always pick what they need.
“Honestly, I think it takes away from the core of what we’re trying to do,” Hartner admits. “Retail is hard enough, and racing is another thing with packet pickups and timing, from the start we’ve focused on the store.”
“One year, we had over 80 women’s winter running long sleeve tops, and about 20 of them did really well, 20 did okay, and the rest didn’t,” Hartner adds. “The next year
Universal Sole, on the other hand, does put on a series of trail races throughout the year, which have become quite popular, Feinberg says.
“The races are very thought out and we have sponsors and everything, but we also have fun runs which I really like,” he explains. “The beauty of fun runs is you can create anything and play around. We add new ones all the time based on what seems to be working and what isn’t. Feinberg also encourages vendors to come out to events and let runners try out their products; not only does it let the company promote their newest items, but it is an opportunity to attract new customers and creates more excitement at an event. The Dick Pond Racing Team, formerly combined with the Fast Track Racing Team, is Dick Pond’s opportunity for customers to get involved in the racing scene. When the teams split last year, Dick Pond took a lot of ideas from Fast Track to continue being a strong team, but wanted to stress the importance of inclusiveness. “We really want to help our customers reach their goals when it comes to racing, whether that’s graduating to new levels or feeling secure running with people of different abilities,” Haworth says. “It’s a come one come all group, and it’s about making a good community around running. Fast Track did all of those well, but were taking away the competitive focus and want to make our runners better.” Dick Pond also hosts fun runs, Walk 2 Run events, fundraisers and weekend and weekday runs. In Chicago and its suburbs alone, there are over 35 local stores that serve runners and triathletes, and even more throughout the rest of Illinois. Between their wide variety of products, the different events and training groups they host and the camaraderie they represent, they work hard before the season starts, so athletes can work hard during the season. “Like any small business, you’re wearing a lot of hats and answering a lot of phones,” Haworth says. “The time that we do put into planning can always be done better and more efficiently, but we do our best for the athletes.” MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

s a new running season approaches, seven Chicagoland running organizations and nonprofits are currently epitomizing the merits of this quote—by serving as official charities for the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Although most people only witness the results of charitable contributions, Chicago Athlete Magazine has decided to focus on the “behind the scenes” work of charities, as each organization prepares not only for the Marathon, but for the days and weeks preceding it as well.

Since its inception in 2008, Chicago Run—a nonprofit founded to fight childhood obesity through running programs—has worked closely with the Chicago Marathon office, particularly as the leading organization of the Mile 20 Aid Station located in Pilsen—with over 320 volunteers overseeing it. In 2010, the organization became further involved by creating its own charity team, as volunteers and program teachers were interested in fundraising while they ran. Aside from participation in the Marathon, Chicago Run also hosts multiple One-Mile Fun Runs for 4,500 children and youth, representing over 40 Chicago Public Schools (CPS). In addition, Chicago Run youth will participate in races like the Race to Wrigley on April 23 and the Universal Sole Four Mile Classic on May 18. “There is a natural fit between our organization and the larger running community,” says Alicia Gonzalez, executive director, Chicago Run. “The broader running community finds a natural connection to our mission, as they understand how running has changed their lives—and want to be able to provide that to the younger generations, especially those who have limited physical activity options in their own communities.”

As a national organization with a central focus on combatting homelessness—through running, community support, and employment and housing resources—Back on My Feet partners with a variety of races in each of the 12 cities it operates in. So, when the Back on My Feet Chicago Chapter launched in September 2010, it was only logical for it to partner with the Chicago Marathon. Within a month of the partnership’s finalization, the Chicago Chapter was able to recruit 14 individuals to participate in the Marathon, resulting in over $19,000 in donations. Since then, the partnership has expanded considerably, with 73 participants raising more than $94,000 for Back on My Feet in 2016. To prepare for the 2017 Chicago Marathon, Back on My Feet will now have a comprehensive recruitment plan and timeline, which includes working alongside Fleet Feet Sports to increase the exposure of its Fund42

Racing program—a fundraising experience for entry into local races. By “FundRacing,” runners can receive gifts like running shorts and wind breakers, along with kits that include ideas on how to fundraise. Due to earlier registration this year, recruitment for the Chicago Marathon began in October 2016, five months earlier than usual. In addition to distributing a monthly newsletter and offering one-on-one support to each participant, Back on My Feet will also recruit runners at a Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K Health & Fitness Expo booth. “In the meantime, we will also have a cheer station at Mile 15 of the Chicago Marathon,” says Meredith Weber, senior development and marketing director, Back on My Feet Chicago. “During the Marathon, our volunteers—program members who are experiencing homelessness—will come out to cheer on all of our runners.”
With this in mind, the organization—in addition to marketing to charity-minded runners who will donate their time and money at the Chicago Marathon—is also offering the following four volunteer-run programs to CPS students this year: • Chicago Runners (which instills running activities for 17,000 elementary children) • Running Mates (an after-school program to prepare 250 middle school students for 5Ks) • LACE UP! (a program for 20 high school students who were involved in Chicago Runners or Running Mates) • Little Strides (games and activities for 700 pre-K children).

Dare2tri has been well invested in the Chicago Marathon for several years. After all, the Marathon has a well-established Athletes with Disabilities program, which is coordinated by the paratriathlon club’s executive director, Keri Serota. But it was never an official charity of the Marathon— until 2016.
By directly connecting able-bodied athletes to athletes with disabilities, the program creates a culture of inclusiveness and provides an opportunity for donors to have an impact on Dare2tri and the lives of the people it serves—through scholarships for races and events (such as the 2017 Lifetime Chicago Triathlon), and funding for adaptive equipment, practices, clinics and camps.
Now the club recruits runners and wheelchair athletes for the Marathon by reaching out to athletes, volunteers and supporters. As a result, all of its Charity Team spots have been filled.
To further assist athletes throughout Marathon weekend, Dare2tri will also recruit roughly 75 volunteers as members of its Athletes with Disabilities escort team. It is also expanding its weekly training session from three to four times per week.
“Athletes who are already registered for the Marathon are still eligible to join Race2Raise—a charity program for those looking to race and raise funds—whether they want to participate in running, biking, swimming or triathlons,” states Ashley Schrader, marketing and public relations manager of Dare2tri.
“These practices, in addition to our camps and clinics, will provide our athletes a multitude of opportunities to get in the best shape they can,” Schrader adds. “We want our runners to be fully prepared to exceed their goals, so we will do everything we can to support them.”

In 2009, the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) became an official charity of the Chicago Marathon. Four years later, development director Cherie Hrusovsky expanded the program by soliciting runners who wanted to not only participate in the Marathon, but also make a difference in the lives of individuals with physical and visual disabilities. With this in mind, GLASA began to recruit runners immediately after the 2016 Chicago Marathon, and plans to volunteer at the 2017 Shamrock Shuffle Expo as another recruitment method.

In preparation for the 2017 running season, Girls on the Run-Chicago is officially partnering with the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle and the Chicago Marathon. In fact, the nonprofit has been involved with the Marathon—through a charity athlete team—for 15 years now. “As part of our SoleMates charity athlete team, we also offer a ‘Choose Your Own’ event option, so we have had people completing everything from 5Ks to triathlons,” says Cathy Kruse, director of communications, Girls on the Run-Chicago. “Our Chicago Marathon team is our largest team, but we encourage people to participate in whichever event they feel most excited about.” Immediately after the end of the 2016 Chicago Marathon, the nonprofit began to recruit its 2017 charity athlete team, using opportunities such as its long-standing partnership with the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) along with a booth at the Shamrock Shuffle Expo, to inform people about its team. Once team members have been recruited, Girls on the Run-Chicago does everything it can to ensure its members are fully prepared for the Marathon— from fundraising tips and free training to team workshops and classes on topics ranging from nutrition to injury prevention. “The support continues through race weekend with a team pasta party and an indoor team home-base at a local high school on Marathon race day—just blocks from the starting line,” Kruse continues. “We have trainers to stretch our runners out, breakfast and lunch, and lots of hugs when runners return!” 44

Although GLASA does not offer training to Marathon runners directly through its own organization, it does utilize the experts at the CARA—and even pays any fees that are associated with CARA’s training offerings.
“And, if a Marathon runner is not from Chicagoland, GLASA also offers reimbursement for training that is equal to the costs of CARA membership and training,” says Hrusovsky. Not to mention, GLASA is also initiating a new program in 2017, which encourages its running community to offer support through any Chicagoland race they wish to compete in, including the Shamrock Shuffle. By joining Team GLASA (the organization’s running team), runners will not be required to pay for registration to GLASA’s 10th annual 5K Twilight Run, Walk and Roll—one of Chicagoland’s largest CARA certified 5Ks, serving competitive and recreational runners, alongside athletes with disabilities —which is scheduled for Sept. 9.

To say the least, October is a very busy month for Run Domestic Violence Out of Town (RDVOT). Not only will the nonprofit engage the Chicago community, with regards to Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is recognized annually in October, it will also be actively involved with the Chicago Marathon—a resource for consciousness and fundraising for domestic violence victims—as an official charity. “We also have a dedicated team of runners that we recruit each year,” states Bethany Gomillion Thompson,
marathon campaign coordinator of RDVOT. “They can run the 5K, Half Marathon or Marathon to help us raise support, funds and awareness for domestic violence survivors and their children.” In preparation for the Chicago Half Marathon/5K and the Chicago Marathon (each of which it supports), RDVOT began to recruit runners as soon as registration dates were announced; recruiting will continue throughout the coming months, including at the Shamrock Shuffle, where the nonprofit will promote its team.
To prepare its runners for Marathon weekend, the nonprofit also creates training schedules, offers training tips and plans in team newsletters, and hosts weekly team runs in which runners are educated on the impact of domestic violence—and the ways in which their hard work can save lives. “We are also looking to provide self-care programs to our runners,” Gomillion Thompson explains. “These programs will encourage them to love and take care of their bodies as they train for the races.”

As the founder of the inaugural Chicago Half Marathon 20 years ago, Susan Nicholl, executive director of Special Olympics Chicago, has developed relationships with multiple Chicagoland running groups and race management companies for over a quarter of a century. So it was only natural for Special Olympics Chicago to pursue a partnership with the Chicago Marathon as an official charity. “We truly believe in a message of #AthletesSupportingAthletes, as our athletes experience many of the same emotions as marathon runners,” says Nicholl. “They set goals, train, get injured and recover, experience highs and lows, and ultimately reach their goals and cross the finish line!” Special Olympics Chicago recruits marathon participants all year long, while focusing on marketing that demonstrates the difference a runner’s support
has on the year-round programs enjoyed by Special Olympics athletes. “We treat members of our running team like the superstars they are,” Nicholl states. “It is important for us to acknowledge all they are managing, and we aim to reward them every step of the way.” Special Olympics Chicago offers running team members a variety of benefits—from covering the cost of training programs, to hosting a Facebook group page, so that runners can socialize with each other before the race. “In addition to providing race day parking for our top 10 fundraisers and two round trip tickets on United Airlines for our top fundraiser, we will also be raffling off an overnight stay at the Chicago Hilton for the night before the Marathon,” Nicholl adds. “We want our runners to experience all this wonderful race has to offer!” MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

One of the first steps in planning for a new season is to pick and register for races; according to Triathlete Magazine, athletes should select one or two “A” races, or target races, every season, such as a new distance or location, and building the rest of your schedule around that. Because these races require a full taper, peak and recovery period, they are the priority and focus for that season. Once your target races are selected, go ahead and chose a few “B” races, which may be shorter or less expensive, and a few “C” races to take the place of a hard workout, but still get the competitive environment. Nearly 300 runners jingled down the streets of Chicago to ring in the holiday spirit with the annual Jingle Bell 5K. The race was an out-and-back course starting at Soldier Field and running along the lakefront. Hundreds of runners celebrated the new year with the NYD5K along the lakefront in Lincoln Park. Conditions were balmy compared to last year’s freezing and icy conditions, and some even braved t-shirts and shorts. There were over 350 timed runners and many more Name

The course was well-marked with ample volunteers and hardly any foot traffic other than racers. The event was friendly for walkers and runners alike and provided clocks at each mile. Team Ortho hosted its annual Polar Dash on Saturday along Chicago’s lakefront. The race began at Soldier Field and offered several distance options for the chilly January morning including a 1700m, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and even a few challenges that combined those distances. The Half Marathon and 10K were on a USATF-certified course that took runners from Soldier Field south down the lake shore of Lake Michigan and back. Name

Many of the runners that sign up for the annual F^3 Lake Half Marathon, do so before they have any idea what the weather will be like in late January. Runners were rewarded with a nice day, by January standards for their 13.1 mile jaunt along the lakefront.

Lighthouse Events hosted the fourth race out of six in their Winter Race Series. The morning temperature was in the mid-20s with light snow falling. The race offered a 5K or 10K distance option with the 10K starting prior to the 5K, ensuring that racers had more than enough space on the course. The race looped through neighborhoods in the town of Hartford, WI. 5K racers completed the loop once, while 10-ers looped twice to pass the finish line. This race has a lot of great things, including the ability to stay warm inside the United Club inside Soldier Field before and after the race, but the people are what make it fun. From the organizers, to the runners, to the volunteers, everyone is out there to celebrate running and to gut out a half marathon in January in Chicago.

Some of whom have float tanks in their homes. WHAT IS FLOATING? The float experience begins in a 5’x8’ Wave float room filled with 10” of tap water. The water is saturated with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) making the solution so buoyant that the body floats weightless in it. Erma Tranter Former executive director of Friends of the Parks Q How did you get involved with chicago parks? A It started with running and with the Chicago Area Runners Association,
actually. A few runners and I formed a committee to start the marathon in 1977; I was getting my masters in Urban Planning at University of Illinois at Chicago at the time, and I had the summer off, so I was the race coordinator. We picked a date in September, so I had to go to the Chicago Park District (CPD) and get a permit, and they said no, so that was my first experience with parks. Q What did you do when they denied your permit for the first chicago Marathon? A We ultimately got the permit because Mayor Bilandic was a runner. So we put the event on the lakefront through Jackson, Lincoln and all the parks there. While I was coordinating, I met some of the people involved with Friends of the Parks and met some board members. While I finished getting my degree, I also put on some special events as a serious women runner also in the parks, so I was always interacting with Friends of the Parks.
Q What kind of events did you put on? A We put on a series of women’s race, because at the time women weren’t
running as much. We found out that they weren’t comfortable with men, or never raced before, so we did a series just for them. We put on the Avon Women’s 10K and Half Marathon, and many more for a year or so and again, all in parks on the lakefront. Q did you start your career at FoTP soon after? A Yes, Friends of the Parks had a nine-month grant from the government
to hire a planner, and I applied for it and got it in 1980. They ended up extending the grant to 18 months for me, and then the next year I became Executive Director until 2014. I thought I’d just stay the length of the grant and help the city, but I stayed 34 years. Q clearly you were good at what you did to have moved up to direc-
tor so quickly. A Turns out I loved what the parks meant for neighborhoods, because I used them every day; they’re essential for health and fitness, and kids have to go somewhere to play. And then I met wonderful people who are working so hard to change the community. Between my passion for being a runner and biker, and the need in the city and seeing how a great park made a great neighborhood, it really fit in with my values.

Q over the three decades, what do you feel is your greatest accomplishment? A When I started, there had been a lawsuit against the Chicago Park District claiming they discriminated against minorities; they spent money in white areas, but not equal tax dollars in minority communities. We supported the lawsuit – my first dealings were with the inequities, and my job was to help implement equality. We had to make sure tax dollars were spent in minority communities on the South Side to bring them up to a level of facilities that were seen on the North Side.
Also, Friends of the Parks is a strong advocate for identifying neighborhoods that didn’t have parks. We did several studies in three years that identified those locations, and we’d work with the local neighborhood groups to get more parks planned. With help from the CPD, it went from 7,000 acres to 10,000 acres of parks in the city. Q Where do you think chicago parks could still use improvements? A Well, we had a plan for the city to identify and finish the lakefront.
Right now, it ends at Hollywood on the North Side and at 71st on the South Side, and there’s two miles on either side that could be finished, to go all the way to Evanston. It was called the Last Four Miles Plan; I think we did a good job designing it, but nothing has happened. Just lack of funds for implementation. Q What made you decide to leave? A Well, 34 years is a long time. I had an opportunity to help a nonprofit
in Guatemala, which I did a few times because I loved it. I also needed change; I now am a consultant that is working on a restoration project in Lincoln Park, and I’m on the National Board of City Parks Alliance where we focus on urban parks. So I am still working with parks, but now I can work with a few groups on various projects, which I couldn’t concentrate on with FOTP because I had to focus on all 581 parks. I am still very much a part of it, and I love FOTP and help them anytime. Q What is your favorite part about working in chicago? A I love the city and I love the people; we are the Midwest, and when you’re
working as an urban planner and working in 77 communities of a city, you see the diversity of the people and their commitment to their neighborhood and passion for improvement. I love the different languages and the different people that have all come here with their own stories. I also love the lakefront; I think we’re blessed to have that.
