2 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Dear Friends, On behalf of the entire Bank of America Chicago Marathon staff, Bank of America, the City of Chicago, our sponsors and volunteers, I am excited to welcome you to the 39th annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Carey Pinkowski Executive Race Director Bank of America Chicago Marathon

As we approach the 40th anniversary of this historic event, I am often asked to highlight my favorite memories. The four world records that fell on our course and the epic duel between Sammy Wanjiru and Tsegaye Kebede, where they pushed themselves to their physical limits, stand out. But the magic behind this race and its longevity cannot be summed up in records and past champions. The more than 40,000 runners who take to our streets on race day, the 12,000 volunteers who give back to our running community and the 1.7 million spectators who highlight what’s so great about our city, sum it up. On October 9, you will run through 29 dynamic neighborhoods. You will run with our neighbors from Chicago and our international friends from more than 100 countries. You will experience the thunderous roar of Boystown and the challenge of “Mount Roosevelt” before you make the final turn down Columbus Drive. Your story — all 26.2 miles — will be written on Sunday. From the elite athlete to the debut runner, the seasoned racer to the charity runner, we welcome you, and the City of Chicago welcomes you. This year’s official program celebrates the strength and diversity of our running community; the local athletes who train at an elite level while working full-time jobs; the effort that it takes to produce a large-scale event; the business owner who feels a boost on race day; the charity runner trying to make a difference for her daughter. Among these stories is your story, and we hope you find a connection to the athletes and the people of Chicago featured inside these pages. Run strong on October 9! Make the most of your 26.2-mile journey through our beautiful city, and we’ll see you at the finish line! Sincerely,

2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon 3

Dear Friends, I am honored to join my Chicago based Bank of America colleagues in welcoming each of you to the 39th annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Paul T. Lambert Chicago Market President Bank of America

At Bank of America, we’re proud to support this annual world class event in the best city in the world. We remain committed to many vital programs that deepen our connections and strengthen Chicago’s economy and community. We are privileged to do our part to help the city remain economically and culturally vibrant, and to provide a means for runners to support a wide range of nonprofit organizations. Last year’s race generated a notable $277 million in economic impact for the city. For more than a decade, the marathon has created an opportunity for runners to raise more than $150 million for charitable causes. In fact, runners raised a remarkable $18.7 million for charitable causes last year. This year, the city’s streets will be filled with more than a million and a half people who will cheer on more than 40,000 athletes as they make their way along a course that highlights Chicago’s picturesque skyline with its 29 distinctive neighborhoods. Thank you for being part of this outstanding event and here’s to a great race. See you at the finish line! Sincerely,

4 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. We are proud to help bring together thousands of runners, volunteers and spectators from all corners of the globe each year. The marathon is a great event for all of these participants and for Chicago. It is one of the many ways that connect Bank of America and Chicago together so closely.

Brian T. Moynihan Chief Executive Officer Bank of America

Nearly 6,000 of my Bank of America teammates call Chicagoland home and they are hard at work to meet the needs of our customers and clients. Last year, their work led to $1.8 billion in lending and investing to help fuel Chicago’s economy. We also donated nearly $10 million to address local needs like housing, job training and hunger, and our employees provided nearly 50,000 volunteer hours to local organizations. Chicago is one of the most dynamic and scenic cities in America. We are proud of this event, which highlights all that this great city has to offer. Thank you to everyone who has worked again to make this one of the most popular marathons in the world. Enjoy the race. Sincerely,

2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon 5

Tell us about your charity and why you are running? I am running for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and for my daughter Taylor who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, three and a half years ago. Taylor is an amazing girl who lights up any room. She dances, tumbles and figure skates into your heart. From the outside, she is a normal kid free from any limitations, but on a daily basis her body is living a roller coaster. Taylor has to constantly balance blood sugar levels with food and insulin. Diabetes is not going to put limits on my daughter; therefore, I am running for a cure and to show Taylor that she is my daily inspiration and that she is not alone in her battle. Who inspires you to run? As a little girl, I remember when my father would run marathons. I would anxiously wait for him a mile from the finish line and we would run the last mile together. This year we celebrated his 70th birthday early by running the Indy-Mini together. I can only hope one day to share my passion for running with my daughters, and celebrating a cure for diabetes. Where is your favorite place to run in Chicago? I love to run along the lakefront trail. Seeing people being active with the lake on one side and the beautiful skyline on the other is absolutely awesome. Living in suburbia, with

continue on page 12

10 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

an active kids’ schedule, it does not allow me the luxury of making it to the lakefront much. Therefore, I either run on a treadmill, catching up on my favorite TV shows, or in the local area. This is your debut marathon. What are you most nervous about on race day? I have run many half marathons. I don’t know what to expect so I will think positive. I will not focus on my shin splints, fatigue or how my mind mentally checks out at 13.1 miles; instead, I will focus on the bigger picture: being a finisher of the 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Don’t get me wrong, my mind will also be focusing on an ice cold beer at the end, and getting a great massage the following day. What are you most excited about? I am excited to achieve a bucket-list goal and to show Taylor that anything is possible. We all have to overcome fears, anxiety, daily pains and struggles, but if we put our mind to it we can overcome anything and we can all be champions. I’m just excited to be a champion for my little hero.

Sometimes real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles!

What made you decide to pace with the Nike+ Run Club Pacers this fall? It sounds cliché, but I love helping people. I’ve become reasonably proficient at this whole running thing, so I’m hoping I can “pay it forward” to all the friends who have helped me reach new levels over the years. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of friends who have helped train, pace and support me. What do you think will be the biggest challenge to pacing athletes to a 3:10 finish? This will be my 28th marathon but my first time as part of the Nike+ Run Club Pacers. I take the responsibility very seriously as I know runners will be relying on the pace team to PR or even BQ. I don’t want to let them down. What are you most looking forward to on race day? There is nothing like the energy of the City of Chicago on race morning. And one of my favorite places in the world is the Bank of America Chicago Marathon start corrals. I love seeing so many familiar faces in the corrals, so many people with the drive to set a goal and train for six months to a year. The great Haile Gebrselassie once said that to set a world

continue on page 14

12 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

record you have to have the audacity to want to do it and the humility to train to do it. The same is true for setting PRs. What is your favorite place on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course? Other than the finish? Haha! I have a few favorites: Boystown, running back through the Loop between miles 12 and 13 and the sign that reads “ONE MILE TO GO.” Any advice for the athletes you will be pacing? I swear by many of the age-old adages: • Nothing new on race day • Practice your race-day routine: clothing, fuel, and pace • Trust in your training • Don’t freak out during your taper • And of course: leave all the work to us. Let the Nike+ Run Club Pacers lock the pace and get you to the finish line. Just shut your brain off and enjoy the ride.

This will be my 28th marathon but my first time as part of the Nike+ Run Club Pacers.

When you think of the City of Chicago, what comes to mind? Running through Chicago — which is such a beautiful city — is very different from where I come from, San José, Costa Rica. I think about the crowds that will be cheering — there are so many people — it is impressive. One thing that I like about running is that I get to see and explore beautiful places while doing the sport that I love. What do you think of American food? As a nutritionist, I think that every country has their local traditional food. The United States is a multicultural country because people from all around the world live there; so, it is very easy to experience all types of very good food. Someday I want to visit the “Taste Of Chicago” to experience the local food. You have run marathons before. What is the most challenging part of the marathon? What is the most rewarding? For me the most challenging part of the marathon is managing being a mom, being a wife, working and, at the same time, training the best that I can to be in the best condition for my next marathon. Each marathon is unique. When you decide to run another one, no matter what time you finished the last one, the next

continue on page 28

14 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

marathon is a new training cycle and you have to reach that peak again. The most rewarding part is when you cross the finish line and you think to yourself, “all the effort was worth it.” What keeps you motivated as a runner? The Umbali Running Team has kept me motivated during my marathon training, and my coaches, Sebastian Castro and Adrían Romero, have been part of my motivation. They believe in me, which is very important to me.

What places do you want to see while you are in Chicago? I am traveling to Chicago with my husband and my 5-year-old daughter, so we want to have some days after the marathon to visit and enjoy the city: the Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park and the Bean, Lincoln Park Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum.

When you cross the finish line and you think, “all the effort was worth it.”

Local athletes find their elite stride in Chicago BY JEREMY BORLING Boulder. Flagstaff. Portland. Chicago? The Windy City is rarely, if ever, mentioned on the short list of American running Meccas, but what Chicago might lack in lung-busting altitude or epic dirt-packed trails, it can more than make up for in other areas. Just ask a few of the local athletes who will race as part of this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon elite athlete field. “Chicago is one of the most underrated running cities in the country,” says Tera Moody, who will be making her seventh start in Chicago. Moody should know. After growing up in the Chicago suburbs, she attended the University of Colorado and spent more than a decade in Boulder, before moving back to Chicago in 2014. While in Boulder, home to numerous Olympians and elite endurance athletes, Moody ascended to the top levels of the sport. She placed fifth at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in Boston, just missing out on a spot to compete in the Beijing Games. She went on to represent Team USA in the marathon at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships, and also placed 10th at the 2010 Chicago Marathon with a personal best 2:30:53. For Moody, running in Chicago is all about camaraderie. “When you go out to the

36

lakefront path in the early morning, everyone’s training for the same thing—the Chicago Marathon,” she says. “I can run up alongside someone I don’t even know and just start running with them. That doesn’t happen in Boulder. Everyone in Chicago is so welcoming and open. “There’s a good vibe here,” she says. “It’s much less intense [than Boulder].” Last October, Kevin Havel was the top local finisher at the Chicago Marathon, placing 25th overall with a near personal best 2:21:57. Havel went to John Hersey

High School in Arlington Heights, Ill. before attending Stanford University. He still holds the Illinois state record in the mile for eighth graders (4:31.75).

personal best. “I like segmenting the race based on the times that I’ll see my friends. The race goes by a lot quicker that way. It’s also nice to know the course and the turns.”

He appreciates having the home field advantage on race day.

The only downside? The Lakeview resident says it’s tough to run by his apartment at mile seven of the marathon course knowing he still has a long way to go before the finish line.

“The hometown crowd is a huge plus,” says Havel, who holds a 1:04:27 half marathon

And unlike many professional athletes in this year’s elite athlete field, Havel works full time as an operations consultant for a manufacturing and supply chain, fitting 100 mile training weeks into a full-time work schedule.

“He loves being able to work and run,” says teammate Kristen Heckert. “He would still work even if he had the opportunity to run full time.” Heckert herself works full time as a math teacher and cross country coach at Plainfield South High School. As the top local runner in the city, and an emerging elite nationally, she logs 100 mile training weeks. “Having balance is hard because I want to do everything,” Heckert admits. “If I have to wake up at 3 a.m. to run, I will. I probably sleep around five-six hours per night during the school year – I’ve trained my body to deal with it.” Unlike Moody and Havel, Heckert has always trained in Chicago. After graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Bolingbrook, Ill. resident has been laser focused on upping her game each fall at the Chicago Marathon, and she has. After a 2:51:04 debut in 2011, Heckert dropped her time to 2:47:56 in 2012, 2:44:12 in 2013 and 2:42:32 in 2014. Her 2014 performance earned her Track a ticket to the U.S. Olympic Trials your Marathon this past February favorite where she placed 27th overathlete all in 2:43:39. It was the by using the hottest Olympic Trials on Bank of America record. Chicago Marathon mobile application, “The marathon is powered by Tata all about work Consultancy Services ethic, and Kris(TCS) ten is all hard work,” The Bank of America Chicago says her Marathon mobile application, Powcoach, ered by Tata Consultancy Services is the perfect on the go guide for the 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The free mobile application includes everything you’ll need to be prepared for a great race experience, whether you’re running or cheering on friends and family.

Elite athletes to watch Serena Burla

Burla won her first national title at the 2014 USA Half Marathon Championships, and then turned in one of the top American marathon performances in 2015 when she placed 10th at the World Championships Marathon in Beijing. She set her current PR, 2:28:01, at the 2013 Amsterdam Marathon, and she should be in the mix for a top-ten finish in her Chicago Marathon debut. Burla’s personal story is one of bravery, perseverance and determination. In 2010, she was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer, synovial sarcoma, in her right hamstring that nearly jeopardized her running career.

Dennis Kimetto

The current marathon world record holder (2:02:57, Berlin 2014) and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course record holder (2:03:45, 2013) returns to Chicago to challenge the field for the win. After struggling in 2015 with injuries and then returning this spring with a 2:11:44 performance in London, some wonder if Kimetto hit his peak two years ago in Berlin. Can a return to the site of his historic course record in Chicago revive his career?

Michael Lucchesi, who also coaches Moody and Havel. “You either put in the work or you don’t – it’s that simple. She has gotten a little better every year and that is the kind of progression you want.” Heckert hopes to break 2:40 this fall. “I’ve been trying to do it for a while [break 2:40] and I haven’t been able to make it there,” acknowledges Heckert. “I know I am going to put in all the training to get in the best shape I can, and hopefully I can do even better.” The city that works. The city that runs. If local athletes need any reassurance that Chicago is a fertile enough training ground to make it to the next level, they don’t have to look any further than 280 miles east to Detroit, Mich. Over the past 15 years, brothers Keith and Kevin Hanson have built a world-class distance running juggernaut in the Motor City. The Hansons-Brooks Distance Project has put an athlete on the U.S. Olympic Marathon team in each of the last three Olympic cycles—Brian Sell in 2008 and Desiree Linden in 2012 and 2016 (Trent Briney was an alternate in 2004). The Hanson brothers’ recipe for success is simple: good old-fashioned hard work mixed with smart and consistent training. Keen observers of the sport may also notice that the most successful Hansons athletes exude a quiet and unnerving brand of confidence that has a distinct Midwestern feel to it. “Training in the Midwest makes you tough,” says Clint Verran, a long-time Hansons athlete and four-time Olympic Trials qualifier who placed as high as fifth at the 2004 Marathon Trials. “The cold, snow, ice, the darkness—all of it represents challenges. The type of runner who can train

in these conditions can persevere. Not quitting and fighting through adversity are traits that benefit the marathoner.” In addition to the mental edge that can be sharpened against such challenges (frigid winters and wet springs often give way to hot and muggy summers across the Midwest), Verran cites a strategic advantage, too. As many runners have learned the hard way, your body can’t go hard all the time. Chicagoans learn to work with what Mother Nature gives them, and for runners, perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. “Harsh weather can force marathoners to, at times, temper their training,” Verran adds. “It could be this forced break from high-intensity speed training is exactly what the body needs.” Moody and Heckert agree. “The weather can be a challenge,” concedes Moody. “But it helps with recovery days and keeping my pace in check.” “I think the weather makes you tougher,” says Heckert. “Having to run in the subzero temperatures and the humidity, it makes you more aware of your body. You have to learn what your body needs in the heat or the snow. If you pay attention, you can learn a lot.” Bank of America Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski has learned a thing or two about running in Chicago. In addition to

Stephen Sambu set to make his 26.2 mile debut As the back-to-back champion of the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K and as the world’s fastest 8K road runner in history, Stephen Sambu is familiar with the streets of Chicago. Sambu, a native of Kenya, living and training in Arizona, follows in the footsteps of some of racing’s biggest legends to make their marathon debuts in Chicago, including Steve Jones, Khalid Khannouchi, Ondoro Orso, Evans Rutto and Ejegayehu Dibaba. “I am excited to make my first marathon appearance in Chicago because of the strong history of runners making their debut here,” said Sambu. “I cannot wait to race in front of so many fans. I love the flat streets of the city.” Prior to bursting onto the professional road running circuit, Sambu spent some time in Illinois at Rend Lake Junior College where he captured 10 individal national championships, including two NJCAA national cross country titles. He finished his career at the University of Arizona where he emerged as a nine-time NCAA All-American. Sambu holds PRs of 13:13 in the 5,000m, 26:54 in the 10,000m and 1:00:41 in the half marathon. His 10K best on the road, 27:25, is the 18th fastest time in history.

his 25 years at the helm of the Chicago Marathon, he grew up in nearby Hammond, Ind., where he blossomed into a nationalclass runner. Chicago is a great city, no doubt about it,” says Pinkowski. “The local community really embraces the sport, from a participation standpoint and in terms of all around support.” After a successful collegiate running career at Villanova, Pinkowski headed west to join Nike’s elite Athletics West training group in Eugene, Ore. There, he logged countless miles alongside the country’s top athletes. It was an idyllic setting for an up-and-coming runner, buffered by temperate climate and soft, wood chipped trails. There was only one problem. It wasn’t home. “I loved my time in Oregon, but I actually trained and raced better when I moved back to Chicago,” Pinkowski recalls. “Athletes tend to thrive on routine and part of getting into a good routine is finding balance. I think Chicago has a lot to offer in that regard.” Then there’s the carpe diem effect. Moody explains that when she’s standing on the start line, she thinks about the work that it has taken to get there, rising to meet the many challenges, the day-today rigors of her chosen sport, her support crew. Taken together, it inspires supreme confidence. Part of being an elite athlete in Chicago, she says, is “taking advantage of the opportunities to make your goals happen.” For thousands of runners across Chicago, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon represents the opportunity of a lifetime. u

Luke Puskedra

The fastest American marathon runner in 2015, Puskedra stole the headlines in last year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon by finishing fifth and stopping the clock in 2:10:24, a five minute PR. Puskedra became just the sixth American over the last two decades to score a top-five finish at the Chicago Marathon. He kicked off his outdoor running campaign with a heartbreaking fourth place finish at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles (the top three finishers made the U.S. Olympic Marathon team). Puskedra, an 11-time All American at the University of Oregon, is hard to miss: he stands 6’4”.

Sarah Crouch

At the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Crouch experienced the biggest breakthrough in the elite athlete field, subtracting almost 12 minutes off her previous PR, running 2:32:44 and placing in the top 10. Crouch returned to the Windy City in 2015 to run 2:32:51. She recently finished 11th at the Boston Marathon in 2:37:36. Crouch comes from a family of talented runners – her mom became an elite masters runner at the age of 42, posting a 2:49 marathon. Her grandmother began running in her 50s and has completed several ultra-marathons. Crouch herself knows how to ride a unicycle and play the trombone.

An American marathon, a Chicago event By Anne Flannery In 1977, Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic campaigned to make Chicago “the running capital of the world. And on October 9, 2016, more than 40,000 runners will descend upon the city to animate his vision.

48 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

What does it take to be counted among one of the best marathons in the world? The history of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon mirrors its city’s own past, with a tale of rebirth.

The making of the marathon

On September 23, 1905, the Illinois Athletic Club organized the first marathon ever held in Chicago, drawing a reported 10,000 spectators at the finish line in Washington Park. The impact of this race on a city rebuilt after the Great Fire was significant, and Chicagoans rallied around the marathon until the financial difficulties of the 1920’s and 30’s halted the race altogether. It wasn’t until the 1970’s, when a national interest in running ignited a “boom,” that the city set its sights on once again creating a competitive running event. The modern era of the Chicago Marathon commenced on September 25, 1977 after community stalwarts Wendy Miller and Lee Flaherty, among others, came together to create the Chicago Marathon that we know today. Originally dubbed the “Mayor Daley Marathon,” with the city’s enthusiastic support, it became one of the premier marathons in the country by the early 1980’s. And despite sponsorship setbacks in 1987, the marathon has continuously hosted local, national, international and elite runners. Planning for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon starts shortly after the previous year’s race ends.

Chicago’s “loop” course

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon course is not only emblematic of one of the city’s distinguishing downtown features, with the circuitous route of the “L” train, but it is unique among many major marathon course routes, which generally follow a linear path. Chicago’s first marathon in 1905 began in Evanston and ended at the Washington Park Race Track. However, even before the financial setbacks of the 1920’s, the marathon course had evolved into something similar to the course route that we see today. The current course begins and ends in Grant Park. The course is bound on the North by the Lake View East neighborhood, the West by the West Loop, the South by Bronzeville and to the East by Lake Michigan. In total, runners visit 29 neighborhoods, including some of the most well-known tourist spots, cultural enclaves and residential areas, such as Streeterville, Old Town, the Near North Side, Little Italy, Pilsen and Chinatown. The race route gives local and visiting runners a view of the urban landscape, some of which is familiar through images and some of which can be accessed only by running the city’s streets. This year’s course route will include a minor detour due to construction. While running south on Franklin Street, runners usually turn west onto Adams Street; however, because the Adams Street bridge is out, runners will turn onto Monroe Street instead. Once across the river they will rejoin the original course by turning south onto Jefferson Street and then back onto Adams Street.

2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon 49

50 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

“The loop course is part of our global identity now,” says Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “It makes Chicago one of the most accessible places for spectators and families, and it offers participants a more relaxed race-day experience because they are starting and finishing in the same location.” Tracing the looped route that winds through the city, runners follow in the footsteps of the city workers, volunteers, spectators and participants that have made the Chicago Marathon a worldwide event for almost four decades.

Grant Park

Setting up Grant Park takes 16, 14-hour days or 224 hours. It includes erecting 85 tents and placing 1000 portable toilets throughout the park (there are also 35 tents and 450 toilets along the course route). In addition to these amenities, the marathon uses 35 generators, 1,000 radios, 160 golf carts, 40 forklifts, 60 semi

The volunteers

As runners loop through the city, volunteers meet them at various points on the course. The race route is marked in miles and kilometers with 20 aid stations along the way. The aid stations are essential and provide runners access to toilets, water and Gatorade, as well as essential medical care. More than 10,000 volunteers are responsible for the operation of the course aid stations and, often, for encouraging runners when they need a boost. Carlos Jaramillo has been the Aid Station Captain in Pilsen since 2010 (Miles 19-20). Part of his role includes recruiting volunteers from the surrounding community months before the marathon. He needs 225 volunteers to run his station and his goal each year is to, “continue to give people that sense of energy to get through the last six to seven miles.” To do this, Jaramillo and his team incorporate their Mexican culture into the operation of their station using anything from miniature Mexican flags and traditional music to having 9-foot tall Mojiganga puppets performing. It is this kind of commitment to community and passion for Chicago’s cultural diversity that makes the race such a unique experience for its participants. In total, over 12,000 volunteers — including the 1,200 who work at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo at McCormick Place — come together each year to make the marathon possible. This volunteer effort is just as much a tradition as the race itself.

trailers and 100 trucks full of equipment and supplies. This is no small feat. The resources that go into race day are staggering and would be impossible without the community of workers who come together every year to build, take down and then rebuild the Marathon’s footprint in the Park.

After the race, the infrastructure that has been created is broken down and disposed of, returned and/or recycled. This process requires more than 70 hours over the course of five days, and additional recycling and inventory projects utilize around 50 volunteers.

We are extremely fortunate to have partners like Carey Pinkowski and Mike Nishi who have always had security as a top concern. Other marathons look to Chicago because of its long-standing, proactive approach to security protocols.”

Participant safety and security

The runners

Rich Guidice, managing deputy director of operations for the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), has been with the City of Chicago for 27 years and has been working with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for 15 years. In order to ensure that the marathon runs smoothly and safely, his department coordinates with over 10 different city agencies including, among others, the Department of Streets and Sanitation, the CTA and the Fire Department. Guidice and his team consider every contingency to make sure that nothing disrupts the marathon route. Guidice and Deputy Chief Steve Georgas, who has been the Lead Incident Commander for the Chicago Marathon since 2009, also consult with Boston and New York regarding their marathon best practices when it comes to participant safety and security. The most important aspects of security planning for Georgas are maintaining partnerships and coordination between the CPD and race organizers, federal and state agencies, to city and business communities. These partnerships allow for the sharing of information and intelligence, which informs the Chicago Police Department’s planning at every level. Georgas maintains that “planning for the next marathon begins on race day. We already have the 2017 marathon on our mind.

54 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

All of these efforts support the athletes who flock to Chicago every October to run. Ever since 1905, when Rhud Metzner upset Louis Marks with a come-from-behind victory, the athletes of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon have been and are the centerpiece around which the city rallies. The numbers of runners participating in Chicago’s marathon has grown over the years. It is hard to imagine that the race has gone from approximately 4,200 participants in 1977 to more than 40,000 in 2016. The early 1980s revolutionized the international appeal of the marathon with increased sponsorship and, consequently, prize money (in 1982, the overall male and female winner each received $12,000). Elite athletes started crossing the finish line and, in 1984, Great Britain’s Steve Jones delivered the first of four world records to be set in Chicago. The race currently attracts approximately 10,000 international runners from more than 100 countries and some of the best elite fields in the world. Although the marathon has grown into a world-wide event over the last few decades, the original 1977 marathon ad still holds true today for all participants, volunteers and the City of Chicago. it is the “people’s race” anyone can come and enjoy. u

Will the two-hour mark be eclipsed in your lifetime? This spring, The New York Times ran a two-part series titled “Man vs. Marathon,” exploring a scientist’s quest to produce a “revolutionary marathon time.” Yannis Pitsiladis, a sports and exercise science professor and a leading anti-doping expert with the International Olympic Committee, stands at the helm of the Sub 2 Project, a project seeking to test the limits of human endurance to see if a 1:59:59 marathon can be run this decade.

thought was possible. Think of Roger Bannister and the subfour-minute mile in 1954. Bob Beamon’s long jump at the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games. Seb Coe’s 800m world record in 1981. Paula Radcliffe’s marathon world record in 2003. Usain Bolt in 2009. I believe that in my lifetime someone, somewhere will perform at such a level that the two-hour marathon mark will be broken.” – Hugh Brasher, Race Director, Virgin Money London Marathon

Given the intrigue of this elusive mark, we asked the experts in our industry – the Race Directors of the Abbott World Marathon Majors – if the two-hour mark will be eclipsed in their lifetime?

“I am a rather young Race Director (only 43 years old) so with the healthy running lifestyle that I am living and so many others are living, I am sure to witness a sub-2:00:00 hour performance during my time at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON.” – Mark Milde, Race Director, BMW BERLIN-MARATHON

“Every twenty years or so, we see an athletic performance that redefines what people

“Before we can talk about breaking the two-hour marathon barrier anytime soon, we need to

ensure that everyone running is clean. I have hope that in my lifetime we’ll get to a point where every athlete is assured of competing on a level playing field, and when we do, we’ll see that two-hour barrier broken fairly.” – Peter Ciaccia, President, Events, New York Road Runners & Race Director, TCS New York City Marathon “A human running 26.2 miles in less than 120 minutes may be achieved in a controlled environment sooner than many expect. Perfect weather, a team of pacemakers, and ideal surface are just three outside factors, which likely will be needed to break this barrier. However, it’s unlikely breaking 2:00:00 will occur someday soon within the context of a bona fide athletic competition. That certainly will follow one day, but perhaps not in my lifetime. But then again, who knows when a Bob Beamon-like performance

IN THE NEWS The Bank of America Chicago Marathon offers a boost to youth participation The Bank of America Chicago Marathon gives back to the Chicago Park District by annually supporting the Chicago Park District Cross Country Championships. By hosting three qualifying youth races, the Chicago Marathon shares the joy and reward of exercise and fitness with the next generation. Children in the program receive finisher medals, bib numbers, certificates and t-shirts, along with the thrill of racing.

The 2016 B.A.A. Boston Marathon kicked off the global chase for the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) Series X title, and the first-ever AWMM Wheelchair Series. The six iconic races in the series, the Tokyo, B.A.A. Boston, Virgin Money London, BMW-BERLIN, Bank of America Chicago and TCS New York City marathons, have long supported marathoners within para-sport by recruiting the most competitive professional wheelchair fields in the world. “It is our hope that by elevating and celebrating the incredible professional athletes that compete in our races, it will lead to more interest in, and awareness of the sport of wheelchair racing,” said Tim Hadzima, AWMM general manager.

“This data will not come as a surprise to many, and the sport of running, as well as the business of running, remains incredibly strong,”

Running USA reports on the state of the running industry After more than two decades of unprecedented growth and frequent double-digit increases (300% growth from 1990-2013), the second running boom reduced its pace as runners retreated from non-traditional races (obstacle course races). In 2015, the number of recreational athletes completing road races declined by 9% with more than 17.1 million finishers reported across all road race distances, marking a sharp decline from the industry’s peak of over 19 million finishers in 2013. “This data will not come as a surprise to many, and the sport of running, as well as the

business of running, remains incredibly strong,” said Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger in a recent press release. According to Fortune Magazine, in 2015, IBISWorld estimated the road running industry to be valued at $1.4 billion ($500 million more than the NCAA earned in revenue in 2015). Females continue to lead the next generation into road racing, accounting for 57% or 9.7 million finishers nationwide. More than 7 million males finished U.S. road races in 2015. Four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan publishes cookbook World-class runner, Shalane Flanagan and chef Elyse Kopecky recently published a flavor-forward cookbook Run Fast Eat Slow: Nourishing Recipes for Athletes (Rodale Books), which proves that food can be indulgent and nourishing at the same time. Run Fast Eat Slow introduces runners to more than 100 deliciously simple recipes, including “nourishing mains, morning fuel, satisfying snacks, thirst-quenching drinks, wholesome treats, and runners’ remedies (recipes to help with common running ailments),” showing athletes that fat is essential for both flavor and performance. “I have seen running change lives...” - Carey Pinkowski

Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski looking forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2017 Carey Pinkowski has served at the helm of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon since 1990, making him the longest standing race director in the Abbott World Marathon Majors race series. Prior to Pinkowski taking the reigns, more than 4,200 runners started the inaugural “Mayor Daley Marathon” in 1977, making it the largest “mega” marathon in the world at the time. More than 40,000 runners are expected to cross the finish line on Columbus Drive to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, marking both the growth of the Chicago Marathon and the broad, international appeal of running. Since its inception, more than 700,000 runners have made the trek from the start line to the finish line in Grant Park. “I have watched world records fall in Chicago, and I have watched the race grow from 6,100 runners in 1990 to more than 40,000 today,” said Pinkowski. “I have seen running change lives, and I have seen the resilience of our community when tragedy strikes. We have almost 40 years in Chicago to commemorate – we have a community of runners to celebrate who make this race possible, and who keep the spirit of running alive in Chicago and around the world.” u

The inaugural International Chicago 5K Chicago is more than just a big city. It’s a city of neighborhoods and people that represent vibrant and diverse backgrounds and cultures. Every October, runners from across the country and around the world travel to Chicago to experience this international city by running through it at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. This year, family and friends in Chicago for race weekend are invited to take part in race weekend at the inaugural International Chicago 5K on Saturday, October 8. Join us as we take over downtown and celebrate running in a world-class city! For more information visit Chicago5K.com

ARE YOU A

MANIAC? To be a Maniac you must complete just one of the criteria at one of the following levels:

Are you ADDICTED to running marathons?

BRONZE LEVEL

TRY ANSWERING SOME OF THESE SIMPLE QUESTIONS: • Do you think of the next scheduled race immediately after finishing a marathon? • Are you signed up for more than one race right now? • Do you look at the race schedule more than once a week? • Do you start to feel down when you haven’t run a marathon in a while? • Are your closets and dressers filled with marathon t-shirts? • Do you have so many marathon medals that you’ve run out of room on the hook they hang from? • When non-runners ask about your racing, do you find yourself talking with great passion to the point that the person who asked the question regrets asking? • Have you run marathons on back-to-back weekends? Back-to-back days? • When loved ones ask about your plans for the weekend, do you feel guilty telling them you’re running another marathon, so you say “it’s only a half this weekend”? • Do you plan all your vacations around a marathon race?

If you answered “YES!” to any of these questions, join other like minds and become a Marathon Maniac!

• Back-to-back marathons (2 marathons in consecutive weekends, races can be run on either Saturday or Sunday) • 2 marathons in 3 weeks (2 marathons within a 16-day time frame) • 3 marathons in 3 months (3 marathons within a 90-day time frame)

SILVER LEVEL • 3 marathons in 3 weeks (3 marathons within a 16-day time frame) • 6 marathons in 6 months (6 marathons in 6 consecutive calendar months • 8-11 marathons within 1 calendar year

GOLD LEVEL • 4 marathons within a 6-week time span (or 37 days) • 12-18 marathons within 1 calendar year • 4 marathons in 4 different US states, countries or Canadian provinces (any combination) within an 8-week time span (or 51 days)

IRIDIUM LEVEL • 4 marathons in 4 consecutive weeks (or 23 days) • 19-25 marathons within 1 calendar year • 2 marathons in 2 days (or 48 hours) - must finish both races! • 9 marathons in 9 different US states, countries, or Canadian provinces (any combination) in 1 calendar year

You’ve heard about us. Or should have. Recognized by USA Today, Active Times and Marathon Guide, the Kalamazoo Marathon belongs on your spring calendar. Runners tell us that next to Chicago, this is the race where they feel the most love, thanks to big crowds in this small, beautiful city. Join us for the marathon, the half marathon or be part of a weekend to “Earn Your Mittens” or the “Midwest Half & Half Challenge,” running two races in one weekend.

Chicago runners of the lakefront According to the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA), the Lakefront Trail is the busiest trail in the United States, with peak daily usage reaching 30,000 people at key points. The Chicago Park District maintains the 18-mile trail.

“I came here 15 years ago [from Ireland] and that is when I started to run, but it became so much more than just running. It became my friendships and my community. Sometimes on the lakefront path, early in the morning, it’s just a nod to someone. I used to see a guy running with his dog, and then I didn’t see them for a few weeks and I started to worry. When I finally saw the man again, he didn’t have his dog with him. He told me his dog had just gotten too old, and I remember feeling so relieved that his dog was okay. When you are out here running, you really have a community.” Adrian Campbell

“Running gives me life. It’s a time when I can break from being mom, daughter, sister, niece, friend, co-worker, etc. A time where I can relax and focus. A time where I can concentrate on my health. A time where I can challenge myself. A time where I can push myself to be fitter, faster and stronger. A time where I can release my stress and frustrations. A time where I can see the world step by step. Running is my me time.” Jae Rockwell CEO Women RUN The World

95

“Running is part of my life. I started to run for fun and I was not interested in time, and then I found a group of friends and they really pushed me. My running improved a lot, and when I ran my first Chicago Marathon in 2009, I just wanted to finish. I finished under three hours and I started running more. I wanted to grow and inspire others, especially my two daughters. Now I coach kids and I love sharing my experience with them. My life has changed because of running.” Columba Montes 2:51 Marathon runner and coach

“Running is breathing for me; it has always been a part of my life and I will continue running as long as possible. It balances my weekly schedule, and it’s a way to get outside and run by the water. I lived by the sea in France so I like running near water. I’ve never seen anything like the Chicago running community – not in France, Shanghai or Washington D.C. There are always people on the lakefront trail running and biking, even in the winter. It shows how important sport is in Chicago – we love it! And as an educator, I think it is essential to develop a sports practice for kids. It’s part of all of our emotional well-beings.” Eric Veteau Head of School, Lycée Français de Chicago

96 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

“Running is about the only constant in my life. Through all the changes I have experienced so far — college, law school, marriage, three children, three bulldogs, health issues, work — the one part of my life that never changes and that I can always, always rely on, is running. Each time I take the first step of any run, I’m reminded that I’m so fortunate to have the gift of breath and to have a body healthy enough to enable me to run.”

Colleen Klein Attorney

“Through the years, running has become a way of life for me. I love to race. The thrill I get from racing encourages me to train so I can compete at the best level I can. There are so many great runners in the Chicagoland area that compete at a high level; it challenges me to train hard so I can race against them. You get a running vibe from Chicago like nowhere else and when you throw in some great annual races, running is contagious. I can’t wait for my next race.” James Akita Head Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Elmhurst College
