READY

STAT US: MANDATORY Wear the Bib

The B-tag timing device, recording each participant’s official time, is attached to the reverse side of the official MCM bib. Runners must complete the emergency contact information on the reverse side of the bib and secure the bib on a visable area on the front of MCM Day clothing with safety pins provided at Packet Pick-up. The B-tag records each participant’s splits, start and finish times.

STAT US: REQUIRED Bib Color Matters

Take note of the color stripe across the bottom of the official bib. Runners may only access the corrals that matching the color on the bib, either scarlet, gold or green. These assignments correspond to the anticipated finish time as noted by participants during registration. Runners may always move back in the corrals but may not move forward to a faster corral.

Clearly Bag It

At Packet Pick-up, all MCM and MCM10K participants receive clear plastic bags. All participants must utilize the clear plastic bags on event day. No other bags will be accepted by the UPS trucks at the MCM and MCM10K start areas. On the back of every bib is a UPS baggage sticker. Runners can peel off the sticker and affix it to the gear bag. UPS trucks are individually numbered with the assigned truck indicated on each runner’s UPS sticker.

STAT US: ADVISABLE Dress for Success

Weather for the MCM has been unusually hot the past two years, traditionally, runners have been greeted by chilly temps upon arrival followed by a steady climb through the day. Layers are advised for the morning. Weather forecast is accessible on the MCM App and should there be the need, important updates would be delivered as a text alert. When ready to run, simply discard the unnecessary clothing along the sides of the road along Route 110. The abandoned apparel will be given in support of those in need. Some runners may opt to run in costume, masks are prohibited.

STAT US: URGENT When Nature Calls

Runners Village contains 250 port-a-johns for participants. If the lines are too long or the need just isn’t there yet, head up to the start line on Route 110 where another 150 less-frequented port-a-johns also await. Port-a-johns are located at the MCM10K start and at every water point along both courses.

18

SALUTE | 2018 Marine Corps Marathon

STAT US: CRITICAL Stash the Trash

The MCM is committed to producing an environmentally responsible event. All participants are asked to support this effort. Any water bottles, gel packs or other items must be discarded at trash receptacles situated at all water points. Food items including Wegmans oranges and Fyffes bananas will be composted. A cupless water station has been added to mile 21 along the 14th Street Bridge to reduce trash.

Water Great Idea

New! A self-serve, cup-free water station has been placed at the Beat the Bridge location on the 14th Street Bridge. Plan ahead and bring your water bottle.

STAT US: RECOMMENDED Family Matters

Plan to reunite with family and friends after the run by informing those key supporters to congregate under the link up towers in the MCM Finish Festival in Rosslyn along Wilson Boulevard. Each tower features letters of the alphabet so choose to meet after finishing at the tower featuring the runner’s last initial.

STAT US: OPTIONAL Assist from Info

MCM Info Tents are located in Runners Village in the Pentagon North parking lot and at the entrance of the Finish Festival on N. Meade St. Bibs must be obtained prior to MCM day and will not be available at the Info Tents. Any runners who participated in the bib mail program can obtain the participant shirt from the Info Tent.

Remember to Share

MCM will be active on social media throughout the day. Share event day experiences using the hashtag #RunWithTheMarines.

Movement Plan

Purchase a Metro SmarTrip card before event day. The plastic, rechargeable credit card allows access to Metro and should help facilitate a quicker departure from the Finish Festival by reducing the wait at the Metro station.

Safet y A SAFE MARINE CORPS MARATHON Security Check Points

All participants and spectators are asked to adhere to guidance provided by law enforcement during MCM Weekend. Runners and spectators also will be guided through screening points at the Health & Fitness Expo presented by Cigna on October 26-27, as well as at the starts of the MCM and MCM10K on October 28. Limiting the number of items brought to these events will greatly reduce the wait time at these entry points.

Security Bag Checks

All runner and spectator bags, backpacks, purses, etc., will be subject to search by law enforcement at all of the screening points. MCM and MCM10K participants will be provided a

20

clear plastic bag during Packet Pick-up at the Health & Fitness Expo. Only these clear plastic bags will be allowed on the UPS baggage trucks parked at the start areas. Runners will not be allowed to wear any other type of backpack or rucksack without prior authorization of the MCM Director.

Wearable Items

On event day, participants may carry or wear hydration backpacks or vests and/ or fuel belts while completing the MCM or MCM10K courses. Wearing a mask, hood, or other device that conceals a substantial portion of the face is strictly prohibited. Glass containers and flammable liquids are not allowed at any event location.

No Drones

Drones are prohibited. The Washington Metropolitan area is designated a “no-drone zone” by the Federal

Aviation Administration. Drones are also prohibited in all National Park Service locations.

Observe Your Surroundings

Runners and spectators are asked by the MCM and law enforcement partners to actively observe their surroundings while also supporting the procedures put in place to ensure the safety of all. If you see something suspicious, you should report it immediately, either by calling 911 or by asking a police officer, or U.S. Marine, for assistance. Remember, if you “see something, say something.”

PAGEANTRY AND PERFORMANCES National Anthem – Sgt. Dan Clark, The Singing Trooper

Sergeant Daniel M. Clark, known as “The Singing Trooper,” enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in May 1980. After four years of service maintaining CH-53 A/D helicopters, Clark became a Trooper with the Massachusetts State Police (MSP). Clark served the MSP for 20 years before retiring in 2005. During this tenure with the department, Clark performed in uniform at more than 2,500 events. He has performed 26 foreign National Anthems in native dialect and travels the country with his unique style of inspirational performance and entertainment. This is his second

22

time performing the National Anthem at the MCM start ceremony. Clark will also perform on the Finish Festival stage from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Leidos Leap

Be sure to look toward the sky during the Singing Trooper’s performance of the National Anthem. Presented by Leidos, the breathtaking, neck craning, awe inspiring skydive will feature eight members of the Patriot Parachute Team and one Leidos employee landing adjacent to the MCM start. The team will deliver a 400-square foot American flag suspended between two jumpers, while others are performing aerial formations.

The tandem jump will feature Leidos employee and Marine Sergeant, Lindsay Eccles. She joined the United States Marine Corps in 2002 and graduated from November Company, 4th Battalion as the Company Honor Graduate. She was the Military Justice Chief and managed a variety of prosecutions, JAG/IG investigations in coordination with the Chief Trial Counsel. Lindsay is an adventurer and fearless when it comes to any challenge. She has previously bungee jumped at Victoria Falls in Zambia. The Patriot Parachute Team was formed six years ago by two former U.S. Navy Seals, both part of the elite Navy Leap

Ceremonies Frog team. Their mission is to promote patriotism and encourage the next generation of children to do something they may never have thought possible.

MV-22 Osprey

The MV-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing and short takeoff and landing capabilities. The Osprey combines the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the longrange, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The Osprey will fly “low and slow” over the Marine Corps Marathon, showcasing the precision of U.S. Marine Corps military aircraft. During the wheeled participant start, the Osprey will fly over the field of runners in helicopter mode before circling back nearly seven minutes later and crossing the field of runners in airplane mode.

M101A1 Howitzer

Weighing nearly 5,000 pounds, the M101A1 105 mm Howitzer will fire 75 mm blank rounds signaling the start of the Marine Corps Marathon wheeled participants, MCM runners and MCM10K participants. The howitzer is fired by a team of three Marines; an ammunition technician who transfers a round to the loader. The loader will eject a spent casting before loading a new round, preparing the Howitzer to be fired. On command, a section chief pulls the lanyard, firing the weapon. While the rounds fired at each start line will create a significant smoke screen, traditional rounds are 105 mm, capable of reaching 12,330 yards.

as all campaigns in which Marines have participated. They span the entire history of the nation, from the American Revolution to the present. This Color Guard is also unique in that they carry a banded staff. These 54 silver bands denote the title of the awards and campaigns of the United States Marine Corps that are symbolized in the 54 Battle Streamers.

Marine Corps Base Quantico Rock Band

Marine Corps Base Quantico Ceremonial Platoon

The four-member team comprising Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Ceremonial Platoon will march on the colors at the start line of the MCM10K. New this year, the Official Marine Corps Color Guard including the Commandant’s Four will present the colors at the MCM start. This is the only Color Guard entity that carries the Battle Color of the Marine Corps in a display that features 54 streamers representing more than 400 U.S. and foreign awards as well

military. At the MCM, fellow military and families of fallen service members will line mile 11 with large American flags bearing the names of fallen service members embroidered onto ribbons attached to each flag. Leading up to the flags, posters are displayed with the photograph and name of each fallen military member whose flags are being held. The wear blue Mile is a moving tribute to honor and humanize those who gave their lives for this country. The stretch of the course creates a meaningful opportunity for runners to personally connect with the faces and families of the fallen and to witness first-hand the pride we have in the American Military.

R unne r SPECTACULAR SPECTATORS For runners, the Marine Corps Marathon course is a meticulously constructed route with a specific start and finish. Spectators, however, are on individual quests to multiple locations and often face a greater challenge navigating the event than their bib-adorned counterparts. Despite the obstacles of large crowds, throngs of runners, and continuously moving participants, MCM supporters have proven highly successful in their ability to motivate and cheer for loved ones, friends, co-workers and even complete strangers. Here are some answers to your questions on race day spectating. Q Where to obtain information about a runner’s status? A General info and medical updates about a specific runner are available at the MCM Info tent in the Finish Festival, located at the corner of Fairfax and Fort Myer Drives. Live timing updates are available on the MCM website and in the MCM App.

drop bags, attend prayer service, and find the porta johns.

What is the best way to track a runner? Sign up on the MCM website for Track A Runner service to receive split times every 10K by text message, email, Facebook, or Twitter. Map Track sponsored by Garmin offers a visual representation of a runner’s progress on the Marathon course. Access Map Track through the MCM results webpage or MCM App.

Where’s a great spot to watch the MCM? Perched 387 feet above street level at the Rosslyn metro stop is a brand-new experience, the Observation Deck in Rosslyn is the perfect start point to see all of the sights and enjoy incredible bird’s eye views of the start and finish lines, the Key Bridge at mile marker 4, along the Potomac in front of The Kennedy Center, under Memorial Bridge, and at the finish. Limited tickets will be made available for guests to enjoy in and out access throughout the morning from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. along with breakfast and lunch. Visit TheViewofDC.com.

per mile to aid in determining where and when they should reach certain points in the course. Remember, it could take a runner as much as 25 minutes to cross the MCM start line, so calculations should not be based on the 7:55 a.m. start time. Use the pace chart and adjust projected viewing times following the first sighting of your runner. Remember, it’s an imperfect science trying to time the convergence of a runner and spectator. If you suspect you and your runner have missed each other, move to the next viewing location. Q How to meet up with a runner after the marathon? A Plan to reunite with runners in the family link up area at the Finish Festival in Rosslyn along Wilson Boulevard. The locations are marked by 13-foot, yellow towers featuring letters of the alphabet. Plan to meet at the tower that features the first letter of the runner’s last name.

SPECTATOR TIPS RESPECT THE COURSE

The streets are for the runners. Any spectators stepping off the curb onto the street become an obstacle and may cause a hazard for runners. As the pack of runners is especially crowded in the early miles, avoid adding any congestion to the course.

Download the MCM App for easy access to results, event updates and social media sites. Visit www.marinemarathon.com to learn a runner’s latest split times. Family or friends who cannot attend the MCM may log on to keep up with a runner’s progress.

KNOW YOUR RUNNER’S ESSENTIAL INFO

Runners have a good sense where they are on the course. Don’t misrepresent the remaining challenge by shouting “Almost there!” or “Just a little further!” Messing with a runner’s mental mojo is not helpful. Call out bib numbers, distinctive clothing marks, or runners’

Awards Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup Competition is an event within the MCM pitting members of the U.S. Marine Corps against the British Royal Navy/Marines. Combined times from top finishers of each team will determine the winner of the Challenge Cup Trophy, an 1897 Victorian silver cup that originally belonged to the H.M.S. Victory. In 2017, the British Royal Navy dominated the Challenge Cup competition, topping the U.S. Marine team’s time by more than 20 minutes. The British Royal Marines earned a combined time of 10:52:12 while the U.S. Marines logged a 11:13:04.

Paul the Penguin Award

Maj. Megan McClung believed that Marines should “leave no man behind.” In 2006, McClung organized the inaugural MCM Forward in Iraq for deployed service members and civilians allowing them to participate in the MCM. As part of this event, she created the Paul the Penguin award to celebrate the final participant to cross the finish line. Just a few weeks after the inaugural MCM Forward, McClung was killed in action. McClung and “The People’s Marathon” wanted to honor the courage and determination

of all participants. In honor of this spirit, the MCM adopted the Paul the Penguin Award in 2007, awarding the stuffed penguin with assistance from McClung’s family to the final MCM finisher at approximately 3 p.m. The 2017 award winner was Maxanne Groven of San Antonio, TX.

Armed Forces Competition

Top runners from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps face off in the Armed Forces Marathon Competition during the MCM, hosted in partnership with the Armed Forces Sports Council. The winning Armed Forces team is determined by combining the top four male finish times and top two female finish times. The U.S. Army men’s team narrowly topped the Armed Forces Challenge at the 42nd MCM. The Army men’s team averaged a 2:31:25 finish and won the Armed Forces Competition with a combined 10:05:38. They topped the second-place Navy Team by just over five and half minutes. The Navy Team earned a 10:11:12 combined team

time. The Air Force and the Marine teams, took third and fourth place, respectively. The women’s team also saw the U.S. Army victorious. The Soldiers completed the competition with an average finish time of 2:52:41 and a team total time of 5:45:22. Second place was earned by the U.S. Navy, while third place was presented to the U.S. Marines. Finishing in fourth place were ladies of the U.S. Air Force.

Other MCM Awards

Top Navy Finisher (M/F) presented by Navy Federal Credit Union and the Top Active Duty Military Finisher (M/F) presented by MARSOC are presented during the Military Awards Ceremony on the awards stage adjacent to the MCM Finish line. Presented by the Oklahoma City Running Club, the Paul Ice Award recognizes the first USMC Reserve finisher. The award is named in honor of Marine LtCol Paul Ice, who was killed in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. This award will be mailed after results are verified. The 2017 winner was Marine reservist Joseph Orth, 32. Age Group awards will be presented in December after the results data has been verified. Awards are presented in five year increments, five deep from ages 14-19 through age 75 and up.

26.2 MILE COURSE

START: 7:55 A.M. | ROUTE 110

Wear the Bib

The B-tag timing device, recording your official time, is attached to the reverse side of the official MCM bib. Runners must complete the emergency contact information on the reverse side of the bib and secure the bib on a visable area on the front of MCM Day clothing with safety pins provided at Packet Pickup. The B-tag records each participant’s splits, start and finish times.

Bib Color Matters

Take note of the color stripe across the bottom of the official bib. Runners may only access the corrals that match the color on their bib. These assignments correspond to the anticipated finish time as noted by participants during registration. Runners may always move back in the corrals but not move forward.

Clearly Bag It

At Packet Pick-up, participants will receive clear plastic bags. You must utilize the clear plastic bags on event day.

Dress for Success

While weather for the MCM has been unusually hot the past two years, traditionally, runners have been greeted by chilly temperatures upon arrival followed by a steady climb through the day. Additional layers are advised for the morning. When ready to run, simply discard the unnecessary clothing along the sides of the road along Route 110. The abandoned apparel will be given to services to support those in need. While some runners may opt to run in costume, masks are prohibited.

When Nature Calls

Runners Village contains 250 porta-johns. It never seems like enough, though. So if the lines are too long, head up to the start line on Route 110 where another 150 less-frequented port-a-johns also await. Port-a-johns are located at the MCM10K start and at every water point along both courses.

Stash the Trash

The MCM is committed to producing an environmentally responsible event. Participants are asked to support this effort. Any water bottles, gel packs or other items must be discarded at trash receptacles situated at all water points. Two self-serve water stations have been added to the course to reduce the reliance on cups. These stations are located at Miles 21 and 24. Food may be composted in the Finish Festival.

Water Great Idea

New! A self-serve, cup-free water station has been placed at the Beat the Bridge location on the 14th Street Bridge. Plan ahead to take advantage of this hydration opportunity and bring a water bottle.

Family Matters

Devise your plan to reunite under the link up towers in the MCM Finish Festival in Rosslyn along Wilson Boulevard. Each tower features letters of the alphabet so choose to meet after finishing at the tower featuring the runner’s last initial.

Assist from Info

Info Tents are located in Runners Village in the Pentagon North parking lot and at the entrance of the Finish Festival on N. Meade Street. All bibs must be obtained prior to MCM day and will not be available at the Info Tents. Any runners who participated in the bib mail program can obtain the participant shirt from the Info Tent.

I RUN FOR LIFE

ANGELA POWELL READY TO CONQUER HER 11TH MCM10K open to Special Olympics participants who competed in either a 5K or 10K run. Appealing to the growing trend in health and wellness, event organizers introduced a 5K in 2001 during the 26th MCM. Not only was the event memorable as a shorter distance option than the marathon, its beginnings were marked by an outpouring of patriotism as the MCM and 5K runners passed the Pentagon impact zone from the September 11th attacks. Course changes continued to make the event better. In 2004, the 5K grew into the MCM8K and the start line shifted to Route 110, and then to the Pentagon South Parking Lot. In 2006, the event evolved into the MCM10K recognized today. The MCM10K start line has shifted over the years from Rt 110 and the Pentagon North parking lot to the National Mall where it has found its perfect home. This location positions runners in the heart of history, starting their running journey facing the U.S. Capitol.

The MCM10K course has evolved in distance, location and participation since the concept of an accompanying Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) event was introduced in 2001. Angela Powell has seen most of these changes first hand, completing ten MCM10K events since 2007. Powell will be among the thousands of enthusiastic runners across the Potomac River ready to start the MCM10K on the National Mall. Originally from Tennessee, Powell relocated to the nation’s capital in 1988 and “got caught up in the excitement and energy” of the MCM when she cheered on a friend. Powell won her fight with breast cancer in 2001 and started running

shortly after for awareness and personal achievement. She also choose the MCM10K because of her military connection as her father was in the U.S. Navy and father-inlaw was in the U.S. Army during WWII. Powell was inspired by Melissa Etheridge’s “I Run for Life,” as she is another breast cancer survivor. “I heard the song and it’s kind of became a mantra for me. I was determined that I was going to do a race.” She reached her goal to run ten MCM10K events and plans to keep on going. The MCM10K had a humble beginning and continues to evolve. In 1977, during the second annual MCM, the event was only

As the MCM Weekend events grow, the courses mature along with their dedicated runners, allowing for the MCM10K to double its registration field. Since 2006, there have been more than 70,000 MCM10K finishers. “It’s fun. It’s possible. And it’s a real honor for me to be able to participate. It’s a lot for me on a personal level just to be able to accomplish it, but also for the service members who put their lives on the line all the time to make sure that we can actually run at the nation’s capital, be safe and have fun with it.” Powell’s dedication to the MCM10K is admirable, showcasing her dedication and commitment. She continues to run and has brought along colleagues and friends. “It kind of feels like being a role model. It’s fun to encourage other people and get them hooked into doing it too.”

FESTIVITIES BEGIN AT: 7:45 A.M. | START AT: 7:55 A.M. Thousands of runners will queue at the National Mall to complete in the MCM10K on October 28. This 6.2-mile journey starts in front of the National Gallery of Art West Building facing the US Capitol, and continues along portions of the MCM course to the shared finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

PRE-START Runners can drop off belongings at UPS baggage trucks located near the start on the National Mall. During Packet Pick-up at the Health & Fitness Expo, runners will receive a clear plastic bag to use for bag drop-off. After the run, participants may pick up their bag at the UPS baggage trucks after they relocate to the Finish Festival in Rosslyn.

TIMING All MCM10K participants must maintain a 16 minute-permile pace.

WATER POINTS MCM10K course includes two water points serving water courtesy of Walmart and Gatorade. The first location is locating within mile 1 at Jefferson Drive SW and 7th Street SW along the National Mall. The second water point is after the mile 3 marker near Army-Navy Drive at Eads Street. New this year is a self-serve water station, located on the 14th Street Bridge in the second mile of the course. Runners may fill personal containers from large dispensers in this location. No cups will be distributed.

AID STATIONS There are two aid stations on the MCM10K course. First aid station is at the Department of Agriculture at Jefferson Drive SW and 12th Street SW. Second aid station is co-located with the water point at Army-Navy Drive at Eads Street. Medical tents are located near the Netherlands Carillion.

TRANSPORTATION The Archives-Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter metro station is the most convenient. Also, within easy walking distance is the L’Enfant Plaza station. From the finish area, runners and spectators may use either the Rosslyn station, located in the Finish Festival, or Arlington Cemetery.

LtCol. Mark Cucuzzella U.S. AIR FORCE

Originally from Ellicott City Maryland, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Mark Cucuzzella was just an “ordinary, super-active kid.” He played most sports and admits that he never considered running until at age 11 he joined his older brother, who was on the high school cross country team, for a run. “I went out to run with my older brother for just a few miles on the beach,” says Cucuzzella. “A few days later I completed 12 miles with him.” Then Cucuzzella was off and running. After running at Loyola High School (where he is member of their Sports Hall of Fame), Cucuzzella went to the University of Virginia to study medicine. As a distraction from the first year medical studies, a friend encouraged him to run the Marine Corps Marathon in 1988.

“The event became more than just for self or service. I was part of a military running tribe!”

SALUTE | 2018 Marine Corps Marathon

“I went on a 13 or 14 mile training run and felt ready to try the MCM,” says Cucuzzella. “It was my first marathon, and I completed the event in 2:34:02 without any knowledge of how to run a marathon. I got hooked on marathons.” That first MCM began a 30-year streak of sub-3 hour marathons. “In the late 80’s and early 90’s, I competed in the MCM as an individual representing the Air Force, but it became very exciting when the Armed Forces Sports Council banded together and began the Armed Forces Marathon Team Championship,” says Cucuzzella, who contributed to four Air Force team championships (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010). “The team championship gave me new life and love for the MCM,” he explains. “I went not only representing the Air Force, but part of Team USAF. The event became more than just for self or service. I was part of a military running tribe!” Cucuzzella competed with the Air Force team for 15 years, and now serves as the “fossil coach” who still “keeps the young runners honest” by finishing the event in under three hours. This year marks Cucuzzella’s 25th MCM. He continues to use his running as a way to help create a community of health in the modern world of chronic disease. His book “Run For Your Life” was released this fall. He will be inducted into the MCM Hall of Fame on Friday and will speak about running healthy in the MCM Runners Conference on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

Robert and Donna Taylor met on a blind date in the early 70’s. She was a smoker; neither was a runner. Now, decades later, this team has more MCM finishes than any other married couple. “When we got married in 1972, running wasn’t popular like it is today,” says Robert. “To us, that was foolish. If you wanted to exercise it should be something like football.” Things changed on July 4, 1980, when a friend, who was a U.S Marine, challenged Robert run a five-mile event without walking or stopping. “I ran that event in basketball shoes as I didn’t own any running shoes,” laughs Robert. “But from there, I was hooked. I started running constantly.” Three years later, the same Marine was running the MCM.

Robert and Donna Taylor Running Since 1983

“The next thing I knew, my friend and his son convinced me to run the first MCM,” says Robert, who has completed the event every year since 1983. Donna began her MCM streak five years later. “One day, she looked at me and said ‘I can do that.’ I told her not while you smoke!”

“One day, she looked at me and said ‘I can do that.’ I told her not while you smoke!”

Donna kicked her smiling habit, but hit the wall at mile 18 of her first MCM. Not to be deterred, she returned in 1989. “There have been many times where we say this is the last one, but we keep coming back,” said Robert. “It’s like we have to go back; its hard to explain, the MCM has become part of our life.” Their spirit and determination, along with 61 MCM finishes have lead “Team Taylor” into the Hall of Fame. “When we got the letter we were in shock,” explains Donna, who now runs with the names of fallen service members pinned to her back. “What an honor to be in such elite company.”

AMBASSADORS

To be honored as an ambassador, one must share in the spirit of community goodwill represented by the Marine Corps Marathon. This year’s honorees represent decades of service to the event and its runners.

Bob Thurston,

USATF Course Certifier

Senator Patrick Leahy

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and his family have a long history of support to both the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies. He has a special bond with the Marine Corps. The Senator grew up next to the legendary Marine Major General and founder of Vermont State Police, Merritt Edsen and is a longtime friend of General Joseph Dunford. Leahy’s son, Mark, was a pilot for the Marine Corps, “I am proud to have had the chance to support and fund the United States Marine Corps as a lawmaker, but I am most proud to be a father of a Marine,” said the Senator. The connection with the Marine Corps also extends to the Marine Corps Marathon. Senator Leahy’s children have competed in the event on numerous occasions. Mark has eight finishes, daughter Alicia finished six times and the Senator has previously served a as starter. “Our family looks forward every year to participating in or watching the Marathon,” says Senator Leahy. “I am delighted to have an additional role as an Ambassador this year and to help call attention to the importance of this event in promoting community goodwill, physical fitness, and the amazing job done by our United States Marines.”

Marathons must be within feet of the 26.2mile distance. Thanks to Bob Thurston, MCM meets USA Track and Field (USATF) certified standards. “I got into measurement in the early 80s as my wife and I were tasked with putting on a 36-mile event,” says Thurston. “We had to get someone to certify the course and I found the process interesting. I had always liked riding a bike and maps and drawing, so it seemed a natural fit.” Thurston went from gathering course measurements to providing certification. “A measurer is out there riding a bike, providing the numbers and figures,” he explains. “Once the measurer has collected that data, a certifier confirms whether the course is acceptable and that the numbers and map are correct.” Thurston has certified the MCM for 38 of its 43 years, cycling the course at 2 a.m. on event morning making sure each point is precisely where it should be located. “I have so much respect for the organization and the people that work at the MCM,” he explained. “It’s nice to be recognized by people who have the runner’s best interests at heart. It just feels right to give back what I can.”

Capt. Dave Dailey,

Arlington County Police Department

Capt. Dave Dailey will serve as the Unified Commander, coordinating the response of the seven public safety organizations represented at the MCM. A 29-year veteran of the Arlington County Police Department, Dailey has participated or worked the event for 21 years. “I’ve worked everything from traffic posts to serving as an area supervisor since 1998, with the last four years as the Unified Commander,” says Dailey. During the roll call that takes place at 2:30 a.m. before the start of the MCM, Dailey thinks of the runners, reminding his officer’s to be vigilant, yet approachable, for they serve as ambassadors for the profession of law enforcement, as well as Arlington County. “The safety of every runner, worker, and spectator is our most important concern,” says Dailey. “It is an incredible honor to be named an MCM Ambassador. I’m proud to be affiliated in a small way with the Marine Corps and the great people of the MCM.”

FEMA EXECUTIVES

HOW JEFF BYARD AND ERIC HEIGBERGER PLAN FOR A MARATHON RUN • PREPARE: Heighberger parallels his training and role at FEMA as, “You just can’t just get up one day and run a marathon. We prepare all year round for anything that’s coming, and we would not be effective if we waited until the day something happened and say what are we going to do.” • PREVENT: “We constantly go through training, exercises, preparation and fine tuning; which is similar to how you would train for a marathon,” shares Heighberger. • RESPOND: Like how FEMA responds to natural disasters, they are anticipating challenges and trying to get ahead of them. Heighberger relates his response to, “laying out a plan and making sure it is executed well ahead of time, sort of like leading into hurricane season.”

Two chief executives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) plan to run their first marathon together at the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) this year. Jeff Byard, Associate Administrator for the Office of Response and Recovery (ORR), and Eric Heigberger, Chief of Staff, have worked together for about a year and decided this would be a new shared goal. The deciding factor was easy. As a former Marine, Byard shared with Heighberger during a FEMA visit last year to Puerto Rico, “If I’m running any marathon, it’s got to be the Marine Corps Marathon.” Finding time to train for a marathon and respond to American citizens in their greatest times of need can be challenging. Both can get deployed for short amounts of time with nearly no notice, to respond and react to Americans in crisis.

48

SALUTE | 2018 Marine Corps Marathon

Byard joined the Marine Corps right after high school and has been a runner “on and off.” Byard shares that you never know where you’re going to end up and, “The Marine Corps set a lot of the foundations of who I am today.” Heighberger recently started running about five years ago and has developed an appetite for longer distances. Before his MCM training, Heighberger had not run more than four miles. His journey began to flourish when he joined a small running club on Capitol Hill. Heighberger shares, “I try to keep up my running schedule even during travel,” as FEMA duties always come first and timelines can be elevated. Byard and Heighberger’s marathon training can be paralleled with FEMA’s mission, “To lead America to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters with a vision of ‘A Nation Prepared.’”

• RECOVER: Byard allows time to heal after long runs. Byard also follows, “The Marine Corps way of mind over matter. Your mind is stronger than your body, so as long as you train your mind the rest will follow.” Byard often starts his long weekend runs at the Marine Corps War Memorial to reflect and mentally prepare for the MCM. Together, they hold each other accountable for scheduled training runs and look forward to seeing their families and one another as they both cross the finish line.

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Tyler Fox had an uplifting personality, a dimpled smile and an infectious laugh that inspired the people around him in life and continues to do so in memory. Within days of Tyler’s passing in December 2017, his lifelong childhood friend, U. S. Army Staff Sergeant Kyle Ash, suggested they should all do something as a group to continue Tyler’s legacy. Running was the connection and the group ‘Run Like a Fox’ was instantly formed. He had intentions to run the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) this year, as he has been running marathons since 2016. ‘Run Like a Fox’ now plans to run the MCM as a group in honor of Tyler. Kyle notes, “The group grew and it’s become a huge support system. It wasn’t just immediate family, it was Marines from all over the place, extended family and friends that we went to high school with. People are out there running.” ‘Run Like a Fox’ now has nearly fifty runners planning to travel to the nation’s capital from all over the country to participate in the MCM. More than 600 have supported the group with donations. A partner in the healing is the United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper Association.

“From day one of getting in contact with them, they’ve been like a big brother. Anything I needed, they were there and have been very motivating to all of us running,” shares Tyler’s wife and high school sweetheart, Kayla. The group has been completing running events together since January 2018 and includes people the family has never met before to Tyler’s ninety year old grandfather. Most of the team planning to run the MCM this year had never run prior to ‘Run Like a Fox.’ Kayla describes running as, “a way to cope. I play Tyler’s songs from his playlist when I run and it just motivates me. “It’s the way for me to stay connected with him because I know when I’m running he’s right there beside me,” shares Kayla. “He inspired so many people living, but he’s inspiring even more people now. It’s amazing.” Tim Fox, Tyler’s father who plans to run the MCM, runs to feel closer to his son and do something he was so passionate about. “We want people to know Tyler as we know him, for the hero that he was.” Crossing the MCM finish line will be a powerful and proud moment for all the ‘Run Like a Fox’ participants.” Tim shares, “My dream is to come across the finish line and get the Marine Corps medal in honor of my son.”

SALUTE | 2018 Marine Corps Marathon

After being told he would never walk again, Marine Corps Active Duty Gunnery Sergeant Ryan Anderson defied all odds and plans to run in the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). This is Anderson’s second MCM. He previously competed as a hand cyclist prior to his recovery.

one of the many first steps to Anderson’s running recovery and journey. Anderson was able to stay in the Marine Corps and changed his military occupational specialty (MOS) to financial management, where he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in accounting.

In 2009, Hope For The Warriors provided Anderson with his first handcycle. Paul Kelly, Hope For The Warriors handcyclist, showed Anderson the ropes. Together they faced Anderson’s challenges and participated in handcycling events. “He’s not the fastest guy, but the fact that he’s out there moves mountains and it just moves me,” shares Anderson of Kelly.

“My son has mild cerebral palsy, and I want him to look at me and say: my dad pushed through and I want to be able to do the same thing.” Anderson’s story is one of triumph and recovery. He overcame the doctor’s odds with a team of support and a substantial amount of grit. In 2006, Anderson was hit by seven improvised explosive devices (IED) over three days while deployed in Iraq as a combat engineer. This experience left Anderson with a traumatic brain injury and he began having issues with balance and severe migraines.

“Hope For Our Warriors means everything to me because they’ve been with me since the beginning.” Anderson describes the charity as a family. Rehabilitation was working. In 2010, he was encouraged by a friend to try upright cycling and began training with mountain biking. He eventually participated in the 2011 MCM, finishing fifth in the handcycle division with a time of 2:28:07. This was

profile Running. A once distant thought became a reality. In 2012, Anderson regained movement and was able to start running again. This momentous journey was welcomed with joy and proof that his hard work payed off.

“You can have some turmoil in your life and that doesn’t define you. You can make decisions and that’s one reason why I stayed so active,” shares Anderson on his inspiration to keep pushing forward for his wife and five children. “My son has mild cerebral palsy, and I want him to look at me and say: my dad pushed through and he’s proven the doctors wrong and I want to be able to do the same thing.” Anderson began training for a marathon in 2015 and ran his first marathon in 2016. His road to running and recovery was long, and there were many support systems along the way. One of those was his virtual running coach, who helped him complete his first marathon. Now Anderson’s goal is to complete the MCM this year - as a runner. While not a new course for him, it will be a new and interesting perspective to compete in the MCM again in another capacity. This year, Anderson will see his dear friend and mentor, Paul Kelly on the course as well. They still continue to compete in marathons together and always look for one another on the course and celebrate together. Their friendship has lasted through the years and multiple Marine Corps moves across the country; and they still find the time to meet up for the occasional baseball game together. Anderson’s story is one of perseverance, dedication and friendship. The MCM this year marks ten years since Anderson’s incident in Iraq that could’ve left him unable to walk again. Ten years of recovery. Ten years of strength. Ten years of triumph.

to push the limits

“I needed to do something. I needed something to give back to show them that I care and I appreciate them.” Sanchez did so by starting to compete in running events while carrying an American flag with messages and motivational quotes from loved ones.

Giving back does not stop there. Sanchez, with the help of Cosentino, started a non-profit charity called Rise Above Hardship, that aims to empower Veterans through fitness. When Cosentino asked him, what did he want to do next? Sanchez replied, “I want to continue to motivate, inspire other people. I want to showcase the survivors. We’re not deterred. We’re going to keep on pushing to keep on fighting.”

Sanchez uses running and fitness to help himself and other veterans heal after being hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2011. Sanchez did not let this life-altering event stop him, instead he pushed harder and continues giving back to the military community by shifting his emotions into action and finding his inner strength. He was on a mission in 2014 to get out of his wheelchair when he thought, “I realized the people that were people hurting around me.” Speaking about his fellow veterans with trials and tribulations of their own.

In 2015, Sanchez ran the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) with the charity organization, Semper Fi Fund. On the course, Sanchez met a woman named Tina Cosentino who offered encouragement all the way to the finish line. And it did not stop there. After the 2015 MCM, Cosentino and Sanchez developed a tight friendship and, later, she introduced Sanchez to her son, Matthew, who has a neurological disease. Sanchez vowed to complete the 2018 MCM with Matthew. He plans to run for the MCM for a second time this year. This time, though, he will be pushing Matthew in a chariot.

BEIRUT. LOOKING BACK. RUNNING FORWARD. On October 23, 1983, two trucks, driven by Lebanese suicide bombers intent on taking lives, carried the equivalent of 12,000 pounds of explosives through the gates of Beirut International Airport and into the lobby of both the U.S. Marine barracks and the French 3rd Company barracks, killing 243 Marines, 21 Sailors, and nine Soldiers. These United States and French service members, including others from Italy and the United Kingdom were stationed in Lebanon on a multinational peace-keeping mission. This year, runners participating in the Marine Corps Marathon, both, locally,

Among those local runners is Debra McCoskey-Reisert who will run the event to honor her brother, Tim McCoskey, a first responder to the Beirut Marine Barracks attack in 1983. “I don’t remember the first few minutes of our response, someone had to fill me in and then the memories started coming,” says Tim of that day. “We all somehow maintained our composure although we didn’t sleep for five days. No one left the area until the FBI told us to clear out.”

His service and the sacrifice of his military brothers left an indelible mark on Debra, giving her purpose and pride that she will carry throughout the 26.2-miles. “Running with purpose means I WILL finish,” Debra purposefully states. “I may not be fast, but I will make it to the finish line for Tim and his 241 brothers that died.” While Tim left Lebanon, many Marines were lost. HOW THE MARINE CORPS MARATHON MADE HISTORY American nation were on the brink of being traumatized by the 9/11 attacks. Resolute MCM race director Rick Nealis worked miracles of negotiation with innumerable agencies to assuage fears and secure the safety of his runners, volunteers, and Marines, to enable his event to go ahead. When 30,000 people ran a mass marathon through the DC streets only seven weeks after the terrorist attacks, it made an emphatic statement to the nation and the world that America’s will was not broken. No single event was more important in America’s response to 9/11. “The decision to hold the marathon in the aftermath of the fatal attack on the Pentagon created a hugely emotional statement of affirmation. That Marine Corps Marathon was one of the most significantly historic of all running events,” I wrote in When Running Made History (2018).

When Col. James L. Fowler wrote a memo in 1975 proposing that the Marine Corps create a marathon, he made instant history. Five years of the early running boom had thrown up great new marathons, including New York City (1970), Honolulu (1973), and Berlin (1974), but this was a whole new idea – a marathon to promote goodwill between the American military and the American people; a visionary interpretation of what a marathon can mean, seizing a role for the sport of running in healing the wounds of the Vietnam era. It worked triumphantly. As it reaches the 43rd running on October 28, 2018, the Marine Corps Marathon holds a secure place as a pioneer in the history

of running, as a shaping force for the image of the American military, and as an annual mobile celebration of the freedom and wellness of the whole American people. No up-to-date history of the nation’s capital could overlook it. The Marine Corps Marathon has re-affirmed that claim to historic status more than once. In 1977, it was only one year behind New York in taking a big marathon through the very streets of the city, with the extra dimension that in DC that means runners get an unparalleled tour of some of the great monuments of western civilization. In 2001, Washington DC and the whole
