10 YEARS RUNNING WELCOME Welcome to race weekend 2018 and our 10th Anniversary celebration! It feels like it was just yesterday that we relaunched the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, but this year, we are celebrating #10YearsRunning! Can you believe it? The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events has become one of the fastest growing in the country over the past ten years. Since the return of race weekend in 2009, we have hosted over 264,500 runners - that is almost the population of Pittsburgh - and this year we’re expecting 40,000 participants!

PATRICE MATAMOROS P3R CEO and Race Director

What began as a single race day has grown into a weekend of events for the whole family! Starting out with just 360 kids in 2009, the Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is now one of the largest kids races in the country with more than 6,500 kids running each year. There’s also the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run, Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot and Rachel Ray Nutrish Pittsburgh Pet Walk so every member of your family can get involved. Our weekend of events has become a draw for runners of all ages and abilities from all over, including some of the sport’s best competitors. This year, we are proud to host the USA Track & Field Half Marathon Championships and watch America’s best runners compete for a $15,000 first place prize. The presence of such talented runners will bring added excitement to the entire field of runners! While race weekend appeals to some of the nation’s highest-profile professional athletes, it also attracts thousands of charity runners who commit to training while raising money for causes close to their hearts. In 10 years, they have raised over $11 million for national and local charities. This year alone, over 3,000 charity runners have raised $1.5 million. This weekend, we will celebrate all of our Runners of Steel - past, present and future - as they have inspired, motivated and amazed us. We look forward to celebrating all of you and our milestone anniversary at the finish line!

Run For A Reason

10 YEARS RUNNING 10 YEARS

Celebrating 10 Years Running in the ‘Burgh IN 2009, THE R ACE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE. NOW IT IS BIGGER AND BE T TER THAN E VER. When the starting gun fired on the morning of May 3, 2009 -- marking the return of the Pittsburgh Marathon after a five-year hiatus -- Dee Stathis watched a “sea of humanity” surge through the Strip District, and began to cry. For almost a year, Stathis and Pittsburgh Marathon Race Director Patrice Matamoros had worked tirelessly to bring back the race. Despite low expectations from the public and doubts among city officials, Matamoros -- whose race director resume included only a community 5K -- somehow secured the needed sponsors, while Stathis oversaw an operating plan that at times seemed overwhelming. But in that moment, their shared vision became a reality. “Hearing the gun, seeing the runners take off … I couldn’t help crying. It was a release,”

10

2018 PITTSBURGH MARATHON

said Stathis, Chief Operating Officer of the Pittsburgh Marathon. “We’d spent eight intense months of planning and travelling and learning everything we could learn -- and I remember in Chicago in October thinking, ‘There’s no way in hell we’re going to pull this off’ -- and then they start and there’s this release. It’s happening. I was crying and feeling exhilarated and exhausted. “I’d never seen that many people running at once. It was crazy and very exciting.” And it was only the beginning. This year’s event, the 2018 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, is a milestone: The 10th anniversary of the return of Pittsburgh’s marathon. In year one, 10,500 people participated. Today, it draws close to 40,000 people and is widely regarded as one of the premier destination road races in America.

Like a marathon, it’s been a journey. Getting here wasn’t easy. And it certainly didn’t happen overnight.

‘THESE WOMEN ARE NUTS’ The Pittsburgh Marathon started in 1985 and continued for 19 years. Then UPMC pulled out as the chief sponsor, and the cash-strapped city cancelled the event in 2004. Four years later, Matamoros and Stathis -two relative unknowns around City Hall -approached officials with an ambitious plan to relaunch the marathon. Guy Costa, the city’s Chief Operating Officer who completed the marathon in 1986, listened to their pitch and thought: These ladies are nuts. “I thought, ‘Yeah, right. You’re going to bring back the marathon,’” Costa recalled. “But they had vision. I was skeptical because it was very costly. But they worked hard.”

BLOOD SWEAT & CHEERS Behind the scenes, a group of dedicated runners, including Michele Fetting, had been working for years to bring back the marathon. But their plans needed a magician, someone who could march into corporate headquarters and convince sponsors to put their names on a race that had died off from a lack of interest. Fetting found her woman in Matamoros, whose children went to the same school as Fetting’s. Matamoros had volunteered to be race director for the St. Margaret Foundation 5K race in Aspinwall. Fetting saw a race brochure and noted two things. The list of sponsors, which was impressive, especially for a small 5K, and a program Matamoros designed to train kids -- and, by extension, their parents -- to run the race. “It was a great idea to get families running together and to grow participation in that way,” said Fetting, Emeritus Founding Chair of the Pittsburgh Marathon Board of Directors. “That was the kind of thinking we were going to need to pull off the marathon. I knew right away she’d be a great race director.”

Center. This is big, people, you have no idea what this is going to be. This is going to be a world class marathon.’ “You just open up your magic briefcase and you show them what is to come.” Matamoros had less than a year to raise a million dollars, the amount needed for the marathon reboot. After DICK’S Sporting Goods and Philips Respironics signed on as title sponsors, the city called a press conference. The Pittsburgh Marathon was coming back.

EVERYTHING WENT WRONG Matamoros rode in the pace car. From there, she had a perfect seat to watch everything go wrong. Some volunteers were late or failed to show at all. Racers ignored temporary fencing and walked anywhere they pleased. Motorists removed barricades and drove onto the course alongside startled runners. Residents trapped inside barricades also drove onto the course

“WITH EVERYTHING THAT WENT WRONG, THEY WERE ALL HAPPY. THEN IT WAS: ‘HOLY COW.’ WE’VE GOT TO PLAN THE NEXT ONE NOW.” - PATRICE MATAMOROS

A MAGIC BRIEFCASE Matamoros immediately said yes. She said yes because she missed running: As a teenager in Montana, Matamoros was a three-time high school state champion in cross country. But an injury in college, at the University of Florida, ended her running career and left her with debilitating hip pain. This was her way back to the sport she loved. She said yes because she knew she could do it: Matamoros had a degree in marketing and business administration, and as a professional had handled multimillion-dollar accounts for a division of Ford Motor Co. She said yes because she had vision: “Never in my mind did I picture a little community marathon,” Matamoros said. “Race directors from other cities would say, ‘It’s OK if you put your expo in a hotel the first year.’ And I’d tell them, ‘No, I already booked the Convention WWW.THEPITTSBURGHMARATHON.COM

10 YEARS RUNNING 10 YEARS in search of a way out. The understaffed finish line was the definition of confusion. “On paper it all looks nice. Then you’ve got actual people and the problems start,” Matamoros said. “I thought, ‘We’re getting fired.’ I was sure we were going to get fired.” Then a curious thing happened: Matamoros checked social media and discovered that – everyone loved it. Runners, volunteers and spectators raved on Facebook about the return of the Pittsburgh Marathon, which boasts a scenic course that stretches to every corner of the city, and crosses multiple bridges and all three rivers. They went to running blogs and gave high marks to the race, course, staff and volunteers. And they vowed to return the following year. “With everything that went wrong, they were all happy,” Matamoros said. “Then it was: ‘Holy cow. We’ve got to plan the next one now.’”

‘THERE WILL BE A BLAST’

In other years, there were downpours and lightning storms, constant course changes due to construction, and frequent complaints from residents and businesses affected by road closures. Yet, registration continued to grow. In year four -- with 28,000 runners signed up -- the race found its permanent start and finish lines Downtown on the Boulevard of the Allies. Until then, officials had been forced to change those points every year based on other events. But by 2012, the race had become so popular, so established, that the city agreed to shut down one of the main Downtown thoroughfares for more than two days every first weekend of May. Perhaps the most memorable year was 2013.

In year two, there was the microwave.

Three weeks before the race, terrorists exploded homemade bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. Across the country, the running community was in a state of shock and mourning. In Pittsburgh, organizers suddenly had three weeks to prepare for a potential terrorist attack.

Instead, they called in the bomb squad. With 16,000 runners at various spots on the course, including the finish line near the Convention Center, police taped off the area and prepared to blow up the mysteriously-placed microwave. “I was standing with the announcer and I told him, ‘There will be a blast, but I don’t know when,’” Matamoros said. “He was an Air Force guy, cool and calm, and he said, ‘Don’t worry, I got this.’ All of a sudden, we hear BOOOM and he cranks up the music and yells, ‘How about that?’ Everybody just laughed and cheered. People didn’t know what was going on.” 2018 PITTSBURGH MARATHON

“People were like, ‘Why didn’t they put the stairs on the course map?’” Matamoros said.

The ensuing years brought highs and lows.

Matamoros was in the pace car again when police called to say there was a problem with her finish line. Someone had left a microwave. Matamoros told them to move it. Police said that wasn’t an option.

12

Of course, when officials diverted runners to no less than six makeshift finish lines -- including one that included a stairwell inside the Amtrak Station -- there were questions.

“Our world changed that day,” said Ron Roth, Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine, and the Pittsburgh Marathon Medical Director. “No one signs up for that to happen at a marathon.” Behind the scenes, organizers created the first mobile medical team to respond to an attack, and quietly stocked aid stations with tourniquets for the first time in event history. Out in the open, runners, spectators, marathon staff and volunteers became Boston

BLOOD SWEAT & CHEERS Strong. Every year, about 300,000 spectators show up for the marathon, but that year, the crowd had an edge. Never before had they cheered so loudly, so defiantly. The electricity was palpable. Pittsburgh showed up that day to cheer on runners who would not back down, and to declare to the world that we would not be intimidated -- not here, not in Boston, not anywhere. “Everyone rallied,” Matamoros said. “It was an American moment. We said, ‘We’re not going to be pushed down. We’re going to come out in full force. We’re going to show them what we’ve got.’”

“NOW THERE ARE FAMILIES WHO TREAT IT LIKE AN EVENT. BACK THEN, A LOT OF PEOPLE, WOULD SAY, ‘OH, I’D NEVER WAKE UP THAT EARLY JUST TO GO WATCH PEOPLE RUN.’ NOW PEOPLE SAY, ‘OH YEAH, I’M GOING

TO GO WATCH!” — CAROL PAUL

Spectators also have changed. Carol Paul, one of over 240 ten-year race participants, recalled long stretches of isolation the first year, and thin crowds at the finish line. “Now there are families who treat it like an event,” she said. “Back then, a lot of people, would say, ‘Oh, I’d never wake up that early just to go watch people run.’ Now people say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to go watch!’” Also of note: Race weekend generates an estimated $10.2 million a year in direct spending, runners annually raise $1.5 million for charities, and Matamoros has the organization on such solid financial footing that even the loss of a major sponsor would not lead to cancellation, as it did in 2004.

‘THE WHOLE WORLD NOTICES’ Ten years ago, few Pittsburghers were seen running the city’s 90 unique neighborhoods. Now, runners are as much a fixture on river trails, bridges and streets as a Steelers jersey. “We went from being a bunch of couch potatoes who drank beer and tailgated to a bunch of runners who drink beer after we run,” Stathis said.

The Pittsburgh Marathon is not only back, it’s here to stay, a fact evidenced by USA Track & Field’s selection of Pittsburgh to host the national Half Marathon Championships in 2018 and 2019. “It really has become one of the elite marathons in the country, and the fact we have the national championships over

the next two years is a testament to that,” County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. “The Marathon is a lot like Pittsburgh: We experiment and do things on a small scale, and when we succeed, the whole world notices,” Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto added. Although ten years is a remarkable accomplishment, especially considering the event’s humble restart in 2009, Matamoros and Stathis spend little time thinking about the past. They focus instead on how to make the Pittsburgh Marathon even better. “It’s my nature to think only about what’s next,” Stathis said. “What’s going to put us above Chicago or New York, and not because we’re bigger than them, but because we’re different? Running Pittsburgh is a community experience. It’s an experience 100 times different and better, I think, than anywhere else because there’s a real connection that runners get to each and every neighborhood they run through. This race is unique. You don’t get that anywhere else.” WWW.THEPITTSBURGHMARATHON.COM

BLOOD SWEAT & CHEERS Race Number

Runner Guidelines

Your 2018 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race number must be worn at all times on race day. Your race number indicates your start corral assignment and must be visible to gain entry into the start and finish areas on race day.

To help ensure a safe race experience, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon encourages all spectators, volunteers and runners to be aware of their surroundings.

Please fill out the back of your race number with emergency contact and medical information prior to race day.

Timing Device The Marathon and Half Marathon will utilize Chronotrack B-tag timing. It’s an all-weather disposable tag that is attached to your race number and will transmit a unique signal to enable a computer to record the official time. In order to receive an accurate time, make sure that your race number is: • Clearly visible on the front of the torso • Unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) • Pinned on all four corners • Not covered by jackets, runner belts, water bottles, etc. The Marathon Relay will utilize Chronotrack D-tag timing. It’s a disposable tag that participants peel off the bib and place on their shoe to record their time. Once a relay member has crossed the timing mat and finished their leg of the race, they should remove the D-tag to avoid any potential timing issues while passing near a timing mat at the relay exchange or near the finish line.

Permitted Runner Items • Camelbacks and/or fuel belts are permitted but will be subject to inspection at the entrances to the start and finish line perimeters.

• If you see a suspicious person, object, or vehicle along or near the race course, please report the sighting to 9-1-1 or notify nearby law enforcement personnel. • Do not store, hide, or leave any personal items, backpacks, packages, or clothes along or near the race route, including the start and finish line areas and Point State Park. • No backpacks, duffel bags, bags (paper, plastic, etc.), hard or soft coolers, or purses larger than 8.5”x11” will be allowed inside the start line or finish line runner-only areas. Please see “Permitted Runner Items” below for a list of allowable items. • Runners must use a race-issued Gear Check bag for Gear Check. Each bag checked must have the proper runner race number attached to the bag. Details will be included with the Gear Check bag at the Expo. • All bags must be checked into Gear Check prior to the start of the race. Runners will NOT be allowed to bring or carry bags into the start line corrals. • Only registered runners with official race numbers will be permitted inside the start line corrals. Runners must enter the start line corrals through designated entrances.

PARKING DOWNTOWN PARKING SINCE BOTH THE START LINE AND FINISH LINE ARE LOCATED IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS PLAN TO ARRIVE AT LEAST TWO HOURS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE RACE. ALTHOUGH THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF PARKING AVAILABLE DOWNTOWN, DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF ROAD CLOSURES AND CONGESTION ON SUNDAY MORNING, ARRIVING EARLY WILL HELP INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF FINDING AVAILABLE PARKING. ADDITIONALLY, STANWIX STREET FROM PENN AVENUE TO BOULEVARD OF THE ALLIES AND COMMONWEALTH PLACE WILL CLOSE AT 4 A.M.

USATF Half Marathon Championships PIT TSBURGH WILL HOST THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S NATIONAL HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Aliphine Tuliamuk has raced twice before in Pittsburgh, but she’s never run in the half-marathon and she’s never crossed the finish line first. One of those will definitely change on May 6. She hopes the other will as well. Tuliamuk, 28, is one of many of the nation’s top distance runners who will compete in the USATF Half Marathon Championships, held in conjunction with the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events. She’s hoping that after second-place finishes in both the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and EQT 10 Miler in 2015, she’ll not only experience her first victory in the Steel City but also add another national title to her collection. “I love the fact that they brought (the national championships) to Pittsburgh because it’s an opportunity for me to come back to the city where I debuted in the marathon,” said Tuliamuk, a native of Kenya turned U.S. citizen who now lives in Santa Fe, New

30

2018 PITTSBURGH MARATHON

Mexico. “To come and win a national title would be so awesome, I would love that. The course is not going to be easy, it’s going to be a challenge, but it’s going to be an honest race. When you win, you know you worked for it.”

“I KNOW MANY STRONG RUNNERS WILL COME RUN THE RACE, SO IT WILL MAKE THE RACE MORE EXCITING AND COMPETITIVE.” — LEONARD KORIR

Pittsburgh will host the men’s and women’s national half marathon championships not only in 2018 but also in 2019. This year’s race will be particularly special, however, as the city celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Marathon, presented by P3R, returning to the streets of Pittsburgh following a fiveyear absence. A prize purse this year of $85,000 awaits the top performers. The half marathon will also be a part of the USATF Running Circuit, a road series that features the national championships from one mile through the marathon. U.S. Olympian and two-time EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler champion Leonard Korir is one of the runners who will be competing in the men’s field. In 2016, Korir was 14th in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Games in Rio, and in November 2017 ran a personal best of 59:52 in the Delhi Half Marathon. It was the third-fastest half marathon time ever by a U.S. man.

BLOOD SWEAT & CHEERS Korir was undefeated in three races in 2018, including winning his second consecutive USATF cross-country title, heading into the IAAF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half Marathon Championships Valencia 2018 in late March. He is expecting a powerful field to line up with him the first Sunday in May. “I know many strong runners will come run the race, so it will make the race more exciting and competitive,” said Korir, who won the EQT 10 Miler in 2014 and 2016. “I can’t wait to come run in May and have a good race.” Korir won the half marathon national title in 2017 with a time of 1:03:04 when the race was held in Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. The native of Kenya enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 2015 and became a U.S. citizen in June 2016.

“I JUST FEEL PROUD TO BE FROM PITTSBURGH,

SO IT MAKES ME EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO BRING THE COMPETITION TO MY HOMETOWN.” — BALOURIS TABB

Tuliamuk is also a native of Kenya who became a U.S. citizen in April 2016. She says it’s one of the best things that ever happened to her. In 2017 she won national titles in the cross-country, 25K, 10K and 7-mile distances and would love to add the half marathon title to that collection. “It is really important for me to have the national titles,” she said. “I’m a new citizen and I feel like it’s great for me to win a national title for my new country. It’s a good opportunity to

run with some really good U.S. runners. Especially on the women’s side, we have some really, really good distance runners.” Tuliamuk made her marathon debut in Pittsburgh in 2015 and led most of the way, but as the distance ultimately got to her and defending champion Clara Santucci made a late kick, Tuliamuk finished in second place. She was also second in the 10 Miler in 2015, finishing in 53:11, and third in last year’s half marathon national championships with a time of 1:11:42.

“I just feel proud to be from Pittsburgh, so it makes me excited to be able to bring the competition to my hometown and race against the best on my home turf,” she said. Pittsburgh has previously hosted six USA Marathon Championships, including the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials for the women in 1988 and for the men in 2000. This will be the first time, however, that a national championships have been held in conjunction with a marathon weekend event since P3R took over the race management.

Another elite runner who will be lining up is Elaina Balouris Tabb, 26, a four-time allstate runner at Hampton High School who now runs professionally for the Boston Athletic Association. Although she’s run in the Liberty Mile, the Great Race and the YMCA Turkey Trot, she’s never competed in one of P3R’s distance races. “I’d been waiting for the right opportunity to run a half marathon, so when I saw Pittsburgh was hosting it was like, ‘Yep, that’ll be the year I start,’” she said. Tabb made her half marathon debut in January, finishing the Houston Half Marathon in 1:12:29. Coming from a big Greek family on one side and a big Irish family on the other, Tabb said she expects to have a nice cheering section as she runs through the city streets.

“We are honored to host a USATF National Championship and invite America’s best runners to the City of Champions,” P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros said. “The presence of such talented runners will bring added excitement to the entire field of runners and will also increase the prestige and footprint of the Pittsburgh Marathon event for many years to come.” WWW.THEPITTSBURGHMARATHON.COM

City streets, police officers and support are contracted for specific times and cannot be extended. Some easy points to remember all runners must be to the 16th Street Bridge by 8:20 a.m., the West End Bridge by 9:15 a.m. and the Birmingham Bridge by 10:30 a.m. If you cannot adhere to the 16:00 minutes per mile pace, you will be asked to board a sweep vehicle that will take you to the relay shuttle drop off area at Centre Avenue and 6th Avenue, which is several blocks from the finish line. If you refuse to get on the vehicle, you must move to the sidewalk so traffic can resume. If you choose to continue after the course has reopened, there will be no medical support, fluid stations or course marshals at intersections, and the course will no longer be marked. Participants after that time will not be guaranteed a time or medal.

If you need to drop out of the race for any reason, please report to the nearest water station or amateur radio operator so that your race number can be recorded in the race day database. Buses for participants unable to complete their race distance will be available along the course to shuttle participants to the finish line area.

10 YEARS RUNNING ATHLETE PROFILE By Karen Price

Clara Santucci Returns THIS HOMETOWN FAVORITE IS GOING FOR HER THIRD VICTORY She didn’t make her Pittsburgh Marathon debut until 2014. When she won in 2:32:25, the race found a special place in her heart. “When I crossed the finish line the first year, Race Director Patrice Matamoros grabbed me and wrapped me in the flag and said, ‘You’re a Pittsburgher now,’” Santucci said. “That’s when I really felt the embrace of Pittsburgh.”

Clara Santucci likes to have a mantra going into every marathon, a little something she can repeat in her head for motivation when things get tough along the course. During the 2015 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon she kept telling herself, “These are my hills. No one’s going to run them better than I am.” The Doddridge County, West Virginia native won her second straight Pittsburgh Marathon that year. Now, on the 10th anniversary of the race returning to the city, the hometown favorite is going for her third victory in as many tries. Although there have been a number of men and women who have won the Pittsburgh Marathon twice, none have done it three times. “It would mean a lot,” she said. “It’s been a big goal for me since I decided that I was going to do Pittsburgh multiple times.” She made her marathon debut in Boston in 2011, running a 2:29:54 for one of the top 10 best marathon debuts by an American woman ever, then was seventh at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. She later finished ninth overall and was the top American woman at the Chicago Marathon in 2013 with a time of 2:31:29.

46

2018 PITTSBURGH MARATHON

Santucci has competed in other races throughout the city, including the Liberty Mile and the Richard S. Caligiuri City of Pittsburgh Great Race. She’s interacted with and inspired members of the local running community as an ambassador for the P3R American Development Program. And in 2015, she was a pen pal to second graders from Aiken Elementary through the marathon’s Kids of STEEL program, ultimately visiting the school and running with the children in the Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. In 2015, when she returned to defend her title, she said she had three goals: to win, to break the course record of 2:29:50 set by Margaret Groos in 1988, and to make Pittsburgh proud. Although she didn’t break the course record, she did win with a time of 2:34:06, and she definitely made Pittsburgh proud. Coach Sean Cleary, who’s been with Santucci since her days at West Virginia, said she feels a sense of ownership when it comes to Pittsburgh. “She’s won two and she’d love to win three,” he said. “She’s gotten invitations to flatter, faster courses, but every time we sit down and make goals, she tells me Pittsburgh is very dear to her and if it fits into the plan, that’s what she wants to do. So here we are.” The past two years haven’t been easy for Santucci. She competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in February 2016, but she’d strained a hamstring not long before the

race and was unable to finish. She returned to racing a few months later, but strained it again. Then, in February 2017, she was racing in Florida and felt a pop within the first half mile. Cleary said that while Santucci has never been out of shape, when they first began training for the Pittsburgh three-peat, she was still feeling the impact of the injury. If there’s one thing Santucci has learned, it’s that if you’re not good with the ups and downs — both physically and mentally — you aren’t going to have much success in Pittsburgh. “I practice on the hills a lot for this race,” she said. “It’s kind of like a Boston race. It’s a proud city, a strong city and people are always coming out to cheer you on, but it’s all about the ups and downs and running strong on those hills.” Santucci said her experiences in the Pittsburgh Marathon have shaped who she is as a runner today. Whereas 2014’s race was more of a back-and-forth that saw her develop a big lead over the last few miles, she trailed Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton for much of the race in 2015. “It can be discouraging when someone’s way out in front and you could think you might not be able to catch them, but that was probably one of my biggest lessons in running,” she said. “The second Pittsburgh Marathon, I couldn’t see the first-place woman until the last two miles and I didn’t pass her until the last mile, so it was definitely a lesson in never quitting. Having those experiences and learning from them have made me a better runner.” In mid-March, she said she also wasn’t yet sure what her mantra would be for 2018. She just knew that it would be something good. “It will definitely have something to do with this race being closer to my heart than it is to the other competitors,” Santucci said. “It’s not just another race. This one is pretty special to me.”

10 YEARS RUNNING RUN FOR A REASON Deanna Ulrich RUNNING FOR THE RUN TO CURE CF TEAM When Deanna Ulrich was looking to run a half-marathon last year, she came across the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America and knew instantly that she had to run as a member of the Run To Cure CF team. Last year, Deanna ran her first ever half-marathon and believes that her best triumph in regards to the 2017 race was finishing it! Deanna runs in honor of her 11-year-old cousin Aubrie, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 people in the United States. In people with cystic fibrosis, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. Aubrie takes numerous medications and treatments to manage her condition - including 48 pills every day, several inhalers and nebulizer medications. Aubrie also completes what the family calls “shakey vest” treatments four times a day that last 30 minutes each. The inCourage Comfort Vest helps to loosen the mucus that builds up in her lungs.

“RUNNING AS A PART OF THE RUN TO CURE CF TEAM HAS BEEN AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. THE TEAM PROVIDES RUNNING COACHES, GROUP TRAINING RUNS, PLANS, AND FUNDRAISING SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.”

Deanna suggests that others spend time with someone who has cystic fibrosis to fully understand what they go through every day just to stay healthy. Because she can see that it is not an easy thing for her cousin to go through, Deanna thinks of Aubrie as her superhero. To help spread awareness for cystic fibrosis, Deanna ran the half-marathon in a replica version of Aubrie’s “shakey vest.” While many runners dress up in unique outfits, Deanna took full advantage of the opportunity to showcase one of many cystic fibrosis treatments. It was an eye-opening experience for Deanna and a wonderful way for her to show support for her cousin. Running as a part of the Run to Cure CF team has been an amazing experience for Deanna. The team provides running coaches, group training runs and plans, and fundraising support throughout the year. Even more, Run to Cure CF team members are there to uplift each other along the way. For example, when Deanna was struggling mentally around the 10-mile mark in the South side in 2017, she found another team member to talk with and keep her motivated for the remaining distance.

—DEANNA ULRICH Last year, Deanna raised just over $1,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She is running again this year as she has promised Aubrie that she will keep running until a cure is found. There have been advances in the treatments for cystic fibrosis, but Deanna won’t stop until there is a cure. She is excited for the day when CF stands for Cure Found.

10 YEARS RUNNING COMMUNITY By Chris Togneri

It Takes an Army RACE WEEKEND WOULDN’T BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT COMMUNIT Y SUPPORT The first year Patrice Matamoros took over as Race Director of the Pittsburgh Marathon, the biggest surprise she encountered was the massive amount of detail that goes into planning such an event. “Coming in, you don’t understand how many entities you’re affecting and the extent of the impact your race has,” Matamoros said. “Organizing a marathon means somebody is not getting to work that day, that 60 churches and 70 bus routes are impacted, that entire neighborhoods are impacted, hospitals are impacted… You pull one piece away, and then there’s another and another. The detail, the coordination and the wide-ranging impact were things I was not prepared for.” Ten years later, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is more or less a finely-tuned machine. It involves dozens of marathon staffers; hundreds of city, county and state employees; thousands of unpaid volunteers; and endless hours of planning.

56

2018 PITTSBURGH MARATHON

“One of the secrets of Pittsburgh is how vast networks of people and organizations -- governments, foundations, businesses, charities, volunteers, etc. -- regularly come together to get things done for the common good,” Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto said. “The Marathon is a great example of that.” What does it take to stage a world-class marathon event? Planning: Officials begin planning for the next event even before all traces of the previous race have been erased.

“I think people probably don’t understand what has to happen to pull off the marathon,” said Ron Roth, Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine, and the Pittsburgh Marathon Medical Director. “It’s making sure all the runners and spectators and volunteers have a safe experience. You can run the marathon and be seen by an expert physician from UPMC all on the same day.” Above all else, putting on a marathon requires cooperation.

Funding: It costs around $4 million annually to hold the Pittsburgh Marathon and that money comes primarily from sponsors and registration.

“Over 100 agencies and organizations are part of the team that manages the marathon events,” said Dee Stathis, Chief Operating Officer of the Pittsburgh Marathon.

Medical Care: Hundreds of physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and other volunteers help run the 17 aid stations on the course and the sprawling medical tent at the finish line.

That includes 400 to 500 law enforcement officials from the city, county, state, Port Authority, FBI and every university in the city. The marathon covers the cost of their service, at $100,000 a year.

BLOOD SWEAT & CHEERS Emergency Medical Services also play a key role. The marathon hires 28 ambulance units from outside Pittsburgh so city EMS services can focus on the rest of the city. Other city services include the Fire Department, for traffic control and medical services; Public Works, which sets up barricades, helps with clean-up efforts and reopens roads; the Mayor’s Office, the county executive’s office, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center -- every entity comes together to assure a smooth and safe experience for runners and spectators. Such collaboration is crucial. In a city accustomed to massive sporting events -- including back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship Parades, attended by hundreds of thousands of people Downtown, celebrating the Pittsburgh Penguins -- the Pittsburgh Marathon is “absolutely” the biggest single event staged annually in the city, said Pittsburgh Chief Operating Officer Guy Costa. “No doubt it’s the biggest,” Costa said. “It takes us into so many neighborhoods, not like where you have an event Downtown or on the North Shore. This involves a large number of neighborhoods, so we have to provide hundreds of employees. With a 26.2-mile course, a half-marathon course, and other races, we need to provide every resource we have.” Still, even with city and county support, the marathon simply would not function without volunteers, race officials said. They work water stations, the expo, information booths, and help with food and water distribution, among many other tasks. This year alone, there will be up to 4,000 volunteers. “These people are inspiring,” Stathis said. “They’re people who maybe used to run but can’t now, people who love the city of Pittsburgh and want to be part of a big event, students and football teams and cheerleader squads, retired people, runners

who run Sunday and volunteer Saturday -- I mean, these people blow me away. “It really does take an army of people to make this happen.” Cathy Panza has volunteered at every marathon since it returned in 2009 after a five-year hiatus. One of her favorite volunteer assignments is to grab a handful of safety pins and walk to the starting line, where she inevitably finds desperate runners struggling to secure their racing bibs. When Panza shows up with free pins, “I feel like the most important person in the world,” she said. “Runners are always looking for a few pins. When they get them, they are so grateful. I love it.

5K Run/Walk

“I think that it would be impossible to have an event this size without volunteers,” Panza said. Year after year, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald witnesses firsthand the intricate cooperation required to put on the marathon. And year after year, he is left in awe.

$1000 Prize Money

“It makes you feel so good to see everyone working together,” Fitzgerald said. “And it bodes well for a lot of the other big events we have in the city, whether it’s Light Up Night, First Night, the Arts Festival or sports championship parades.”

Flat &Fast Course

The multi-level cooperation has helped the Pittsburgh Marathon grow from humble beginnings in 2009 to world-class status in 2018.

“I honestly didn’t ever anticipate the marathon becoming what’s it become,” said Michele Fetting, Emeritus Founding Chair of the Pittsburgh Marathon Board of Directors. “And that’s largely due to Patrice and her team, the whole team. I always saw the potential for this race to become something great, but I never anticipated 40,000 runners; it never occurred to me we would actually have to close registration, that we’d fill up. We were just so focused on getting enough people to start it up again, I’d have been happy with 500 the first year.” WWW.THEPITTSBURGHMARATHON.COM
