WELCOME TO THE 2017 FIDELITY INVESTMENTS THE WOODLANDS MARATHON! On behalf of The Woodlands Marathon Management and 2017 Race Committee, we are pleased to host the 6th Annual 2017 Fidelity Investments The Woodlands Marathon, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Half Marathon, Fleet Feet Sports The Woodlands 5k, Pathfinder Pediatrics Homecare 2k Fun Run and The Woodlands Marathon Relay. We are eager to showcase our fast, single loop full marathon course, which has earned the distinction of being one of the Top 25 fastest courses in the United States and in 2015 the second fastest in the state of Texas. All of our events will provide an exciting and thoroughly heightened experience for runners, volunteers, and spectators alike. In addition to a fantastic finish along the waterway, we are working again to raise money for charity. Over the course of five years, runners and The Woodlands Marathon Management, along with our sponsors have raised over $650,000 for charities and volunteer organizations. On average the marathon event has qualified 10% of the field for the prestigious Boston Marathon. We take great pride in offering a world-class venue that allows runners from across the globe the opportunity to run their personal best. The event kicks off on Friday with the Houston Methodist Health and Fitness Expo and Pathfinder Pediatric 2k Fun Run. We finish on Saturday, March 4th with the running of the marathon, half marathon, relay and 5k events. We will host close to 8,000 runners, 25,000 spectators and 2,000 volunteers throughout the weekend. Please enjoy your time in The Woodlands and the community amenities we feel are second to none. Please help us by thanking all of our sponsors by using and promoting their products and services whenever possible. A tremendous thanks to our local businesses, residents within The Woodlands, the Commissioner of Precinct Three of Montgomery County, The Woodlands Township, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors, The Woodlands Development Company, our sponsors, the race committee, and of course our outstanding volunteers. B-TAG INSTRUCTIONS/SCORING
*DO NOT REMOVE THE TIMING TAGS FROM YOUR BIB Mylaps begins timing when you cross the start line timing mat and records when you cross the finish line chip mat. This provides the actual time (chip time) that it takes you to complete the course. All participants must be able to cross the Finish Line by 1:30 PM to be recorded as an official finisher (with time and place). To do so, both Marathon and Half Marathon participants must maintain a pace no slower than 14:30 minutes per mile throughout the course.
Tips for a guaranteed and correct timing Wear the bib number visible on the chest Do not fold or crumple your bib number, especially not the tag Use four pins on the corners of the bib number, do not pierce the tag Do not cover the bib (water bottle, runner belts, jackets, etc.) 13 3

6 TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST RACE
HERE ARE SOME POINTERS TO HELP YOU HAVE A SUCCESSFULLY RACE
“Focus on the mile in front of you. Stay in the moment and don’t get ahead of yourself. People have to take a big leap of faith in the back half of the race. Trust that your plan has prepared you and that you are ready.”
1 Make sure nothing you wear is new.
Everything on your body, from socks to a headband should be road-tested.
2 Line up with runners of similar ability
(corral assignments). If you run a nine-minute mile find the part of the pack that runs your pace, and that won’t be at the front. Being swept into a pace that is too fast will be a bad experience and, of course, isn’t fair to the faster runners who will have to navigate around you. 3 Always begin slowly. The easiest mistake for a beginning racer to make is to respond to the exuberance of the race and head out too fast. Doing so begs for an injury or at best a rotten
56
2017 The Woodlands Marathon
finish because you spent your energy too early in the course. 4 Use the water stations. Keep yourself well hydrated. Sports drinks can help keep your energy up. 5 Don’t be disheartened when other
runners pass you during the race. There will always be runners in front of you--and behind you.
6 Know when the cutoff time is for your race so that you can pace yourself accordingly. It is depressing to finish without a finish line and an official time. For a 10K, the cutoff is usually 1:30; for 15K, from 1:40 to 2:00; for some marathons, as much as 6:00.

Medical volunteers and supplies will be available at all aid stations. If you incur an injury or feel discomfort, stop at the nearest aid station. Most runners who seek medical attention are able to complete the race safely.
