PLCSchoolsAcademiesarereal-life,hands-onlearningexperiences designedaroundaspeci¿ccareerarea.Academiesarelocatedattheschoolor inabusinesssettingandaredesignedtotakelearningandcareerexploration toawholenewlevel.Academiescombinebothclassroomlearningwhere studentsaretaughtbyaPLCSchoolsteacher,andhands-onlearningwhere studentsworkdirectlyintheirchosencareerinterest.TheexcitingpartofPLC Schoolacademiesistheopportunitiesforhighschoolstudentstoworkdirectly with professionals in their chosen career area. What is the Zoo Academy?
TheZooAcademyisoneofthefewacademiesthatcanbeafullday program.FourPLCSchoolscerti¿edteachers(math,science,languagearts andsocialstudies)arehousedattheZoo.StudentsattendingtheZooAcademy can gain all of the credits they need to graduate from high school right at the Zoo.Studentscanalsochoosetogobacktotheirhighschoolforaportionofthe daytoobtainelectives,APcreditorparticipateinextracurricularactivities.This academy is designed to meet the individual needs of the students.

YearII students continue their core curriculum along with clinical rotations.Duringrotations,students worksidebysidewithhealthcare professionals, while getting hands-on workinareasliketheresearchlabs, occupational therapy, diagnostics, physical therapy, surgery, x-ray, general patient care and more.

YearII students focus on internships. Each Education Academy student is assigned an internship in the Papillion LaVistaCommunitySchoolswhere theyworkdirectlywithaclassroom teacher. In addition to experiences in the classroom, students meet collectively once a month to share their experiences with other academy students as well as create lessons.

Students gain high school credit toward graduation as well as college credit in preparation for the next phase in life after high school. What is the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine Academy?
TheAthleticTraining/SportsMedicineAcademyislocatedateachofthehigh schools and is part of the regular school day. DuringYearI,students participate in an athletic training/ health related course. Students also have an opportunity for some hands-onexperiencesworkingwith PLCSchoolssportsteams.Those experiencesincludecaringforinjuries, taping,assistinginrehabilitation, andworkingatsportingeventsand practices. DuringYearII,studentswhohavean understanding of the fundamentals receive extended internship opportunitiesbyworkingwithother sports trainers and high school athletes.

TheLeadershipAcademyislocatedateachofthehighschoolsandisa partoftheregularschoolday.Studentswilllearnleadershipskillsandfocuson enhancingtheirownstrengthswhilebecomingaleader.Speakersfromdifferent areas of the community will present to students.
What is a typical day?
Year I students enroll in an introductory course in leadership that teachesstudentsabouttheirpersonal leadership style. DuringYearII,learningtakes an “online” twist. YearIII students continue their chosen pathwayofRobotics,Engineering orEngineering&Architecture Development(EAD). YearIVstudentscollaboratewiththeir STEMMentorandapplypastSTEM learning to develop and present a solutiontoareallifeproblem.
What is the IT Academy?
Thisacademywillhavetwoparts.The¿rstwillbeanonline/labclassoffered duringthesummer.Courseworkwillbeavailableonlineandlabswillbescheduled everyMondayandWednesdayfrom3:30-5p.m.andeveryTuesdayandThursday from8am-9am.Studentswillberequiredto¿nishalllabsbythestartofschool.This classwillbefacilitatedandthelabsmonitored,byBillPulte,PLCSchoolsDirectorof InformationTechnology.Inadditionto earning a credit toward graduation, this coursewillbetaughtinconjunctionwith MetroCommunityCollege.Atthe completion of this course, students will haveanunderstandingofwhatittakes toearnanindustrystandardcerti¿cation.

All assigned reading and tests canbecompletedathome.Students willneedto¿nd20-25daystobe availableforlabsandinstructor guidance. Students are not required to attend every day. Students will also have the opportunity to intern with theITdepartmenthelpingtomanage thehelpdeskandactasabuilding technician.
What is the Media Academy? TheMediaAcademyisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithhands-onpractical traininginliveproductionofbroadcastmedia,andbroadcastjournalism.Students willalsocompleteavarietyoflongandshortformprojectsincludingbutnot limitedtodocumentaries,publicrelationsandpublicitypieces,andpost-event production.Problemsolving,teamwork,con¿dencebuilding,andleadership developmentwillallbefocusesoftheacademy.

YearIstudentstakemediastudies classandbegintoproduceoutside events. YearIIstudentstakemediaproduction classesandworkonayearlong productionprojectandcomplete outside production events. YearIIIandIVstudentstakemedia production classes and cover and produce outside events regularly.

Internshipsgivestudentstheopportunitiestoexperience¿rsthandwhata potentialcareermaybelike.ThePLCSchoolspartnerswithalocalbusinessand studentsareimmersedinthebusinesssetting.
Where Can Students Currently Intern?
PapillionTimeswherestudentswilllearnthevariousdepartmentsandjobswithin thejournalismindustry.Studentsmayhavetheopportunitytodocopyediting, reporting, graphics, layout and design, photography, advertising, and printing/ publishing. SarpyChamberofCommercewherestudentswillgainexperiencesinthe¿eldof publicrelationsandcommunityinvolvement.Studentswilllearnaboutnewsletter content,updatingmembershiplists,contactingchambermembers,updating information,organizingandcoordinatingevents,takingreservationsforactivities, answer phones and much more.
