Be There Make the Ordinary...Extraordinary
Each and every Papillion-La Vista School shares the same vision: “Excellence...One Student at a Time!” We know that in order to be successful we need a team effort...and strong connections between home and school. That’s why you’re invited to “Be There.” It’s a profoundly simple way to connect with your children during the every day moments of life. We know teachable moments are everywhere. When you find them, you watch the ordinary become extraordinary. Each month the Community Connection Online will highlight tips for parents to “Be There.”
Help Your Child Learn From Mistakes Kids, like the rest of us, make mistakes. But with help from you, your child can learn to use those mistakes to learn and grow. Since your child is likely to encounter some problems in life, it’s important to teach them how to handle disappointments. As a parent, you can help your child learn that every problem is also an opportunity in disguise.
Turn Defeats into Victories
All kids experience defeats. They hope for the lead in the play...but instead, they’re invited to paint the scenery. They try out for the team...but sit on the bench. They think they’re ready for the test...but do poorly. Experts tell us that children’s mistakes and defeats can be powerful tools to help them learn. The secret is turning your child’s mistakes into learning opportunities.
Praise Their Efforts.
Remind your child that they really tried. Let them know you’re proud of them for giving it their best shot.
Find something positive.
Sit down with your child and draw up a list of things they have already learned, or can learn, from this experience. What new skills did they develop? Have they gained the determination to try harder next time? What do they think they might do differently next time? Did they meet a new friend? Help them see that what they originally thought of as a defeat is also a great chance to learn.
Focus on areas where they did succeed.
Even though they were disappointed this time, help them see all the things they did right. Remind your child that they are a great writer or a wonderful sibling. And remind them that you love them for who they are...not for what they do.
Choose your words carefully!
Successful people in any field rarely use the word “failure.” They may talk about a “glitch,” a “problem” or a “snag.” But even when something they try doesn’t work out as they’d planned, successful people try to learn from the experience. When your child is having difficulties, don’t let them use words like “failure” and “dumb.” Instead, help them see the positive side of the experience and use constructive words to describe it.
