Account Settings Account settings control the overall general security of your account. There are two sections: general account settings and security settings. To edit your account settings, once logged in, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner of the page. Then select, account settings from the drop down (see below).
General Account Settings A new page will come up. The page that comes up will be your general account settings. This includes your username, password (this is where you would change it), email etc… You do not need to do anything on this page to set security.
Security Settings Security settings control your account from a log in perspective. Once in the account settings, select “Security” from the categories on the left hand side.

Your security settings will then come up (see below). Each section gives a brief overview of what that setting controls with the current settings. Here you can adjust settings for: • Secure browsing - Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) when possible. • Login notifications -Facebook can notify you when your account is accessed from a computer or mobile device that you have not used before. • Login approvals – Requires you to enter a security code each time an unrecognized computer or device tries to access your account. • Code Generator- This allows you to create a code on your Facebook account that helps you sign in from unrecognized devices. • App Passwords- Requires a password to use Facebook Apps. • Trusted Contacts- Trusted contacts are friends that can securely help you if you ever have trouble accessing your account. • Recognized devices – Settings for devices that you normally log into Facebook on. • Active sessions – Shows you where you have recently logged in from. At the bottom of the page you also have the option to deactivate your account if you so choose. To change any of the settings listed, click the “Edit” button to the right of the item. Make the changes you would like and be sure to click “Save Changes” in each category to save your new settings.

The PLSD recommends the following settings: • Secure browsing enabled and trusted contracts set up. • The other choices are based on personal preference.

Privacy Settings Privacy Settings control, who can see your information and who can look you up. There are two ways to access this information. Both ways, take you to the same location, they just provide a different way of getting there. Both ways are explained below. There are three categories under privacy settings: privacy settings and tools, timeline and tagging and blocking.
Privacy Settings and Tools The first way to change your privacy settings is by clicking on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner once you have signed in. Then, select privacy from the drop down (see below image 1). If you were already in account settings select “privacy� on the left hand side (image 2). Image 1

Who can see my stuff? Who can see your future posts? To edit this setting, click edit on the right hand side (see below).
A gray window will now appear (see below). Here you can set the privacy setting for all your futures post. You will see a box that looks like the status update box on your timeline. Below it, you will see a box with a drop down menu (audience selector). This is where you select who can see your future posts. The PLSD recommends that you set this to friends.
Facebook Security Settings 7 Note: You can customize your audience for each new status you publish, but this allows you to have the same setting for all posts that you don’t customize. Once you have made your selection, click close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box.
Review all your posts and things you’re tagged in This setting allows you to see all your recent activity. This includes your posts, as well as posts by others that you have been tagged in. To review your activity, click use activity log on the right hand side.
Once you click “use activity log” a listing of all your activity will appear. Here you can review the activity on your account. Items will be in reverse date order (newest items first). Navigate to look at specific items using the date ranges on the right hand side or by specific type of Facebook status/event on the left hand side (see image next page).

Activity Log- Looking at a Specific Activity On the left hand side, you will see the type of activity (new friend, likes a status/photo, or commented on a status/photo). In the center, you will see the person’s name, photo and status update that the activity pertains to. Then, on the right hand side you will see who sees the post. The very last item (looks like a pencil) will allow you to unlike a status/photo or delete the comment/status/photo.

Who can see the posts. Scroll over the image to see who can see the post. Example: On this Status that was “liked” the person’s friend and the friends of those tagged in the status can see that I liked it.

Facebook Security Settings 9 Limit the audience of posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or public? This setting allows you to change the audience for posts that in the past you have shared with friends of friends or the public to friends only. To change this setting, click “limit past posts” on the right hand side.
A gray box will appear (see below). To limit old posts, click the limit old posts button at the bottom of the gray box. Another box will pop up asking you to confirm the decision. Click, “confirm.” A pop-up will confirm that it has been done, then click close. When done, click close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box.
Who Can Contact Me? This setting determines how individuals on Facebook can contact you. There are two settings: Who can send you friend requests? and Whose messages do I want filtered into my inbox? (see below).
The PLSD Recommends the following: • •
Who can send me friend requests? Everyone Whose messages do I want filtered into my inbox? Basic Filtering. This means friends, friends of friends, and people who Facebook may think you know can send your messages here. All other messages are categorized as other. To change either of these selections, click edit on the right hand side. A gray box will appear with your choices and you can make your selection. Be sure to hit close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box when you are done.
Facebook Security Settings 10 Who Can Look Me Up? These settings determine how individuals can search and find you on Facebook. There are two categories: Who can look you up using your email address or phone number you provided? And Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline? (see below).
The PLSD recommends the following: •

Who can look you up using your email address or phone number you provided? Friends of Friends. This means that only people who are considered friends of friends can find you by searching your email address and or phone number listed on your account. Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline? Off – This ensures that your facebook profile will not show up if someone google’s your name.
To change either of these selections, click edit on the right hand side. A gray box will appear with your choices and you can make your selection. Be sure to hit close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box when you are done.

Timeline and Tagging The timeline and tagging section controls who can see items on your timeline, who can add information (comment) and who can tag you in status updates and photos. To access the timeline and tagging information, once logged in, click on the gear symbol tab in the upper right hand corner of the page. Then, select privacy settings from the drop down. Then select “timeline and tagging” on the left hand side (see image below). If you are already in the privacy settings, just click on “timeline and tagging” on the left hand side. There are three categories of information: Who can add things to my timeline, who can see things on my timeline and how can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions.
Who can add things to my timeline? This setting controls who can post to your timeline, and if you want to review posts that you are tagged in before they appear on your timeline.
The PLSD recommends the following settings: • •
Who can post on your timeline? Friends. Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline? On.

Facebook Security Settings 12 Who can post on your timeline? The PLSD recommends that you only allow friends to post on your timeline. To change your settings for who can post on your time, click edit on the right hand side. A gray box will appear with a drop down arrow. Select the drop down arrow and choose who can post on your timeline (see below). Note: You may have more selections than the picture if you allow individuals other than just “friends� to view your profile. When done, select close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box.
Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline? The PLSD recommends you have this enabled. By doing this, anytime an individual tags you in a comment or photo, Facebook will notify you before placing it on your timeline. You will always have the option to untag yourself. Untagging yourself from a photo or comment only takes away the direct link to your profile, it does not remove the comment or photo from Facebook. This means that the photo or comment remains on your friends profiles for others to see. To change your settings for reviewing tags before they are posted, click edit on the right hand side. A gray box will appear with a drop down menu. Selecting enabled, means that you will review posts you are tagged in before they are posted to your timeline. Selecting disabled, turns this feature off. When done, select close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box.

Who can see things on my timeline? This controls who can see what information on your timeline that you post.
Review what other people see on your timeline This feature allows you to see your timeline as others would see it. To use this feature, click “view as” on the right hand side.The view that comes up will be the “public” view, or how non-friends see your page. You can also see how a certain individual sees your timeline by clicking on the “view as specific person” section and entering their name (see below). When you are done, use your web browser back button, to navigate back to the timeline and tagging settings. *Note: It’s important to remember that while you may have privacy settings on your photos. Your profile and cover photos will always be visible to anyone on Facebook.
Who can see posts you’ve been tagged in on your timeline? Just like the information that you post on your page, the PLSD recommends that you set this to “friends” only.It is important to note that this only controls the settings on your Facebook page. If someone “tags” you in a post, their secrutiy settings will determine who all else has access to it.

In the drop down menu, you can select who can see posts that you have been tagged in on your timeline. Make your selection (see below) and then click close in the upper right hand corner of the box.
Who can see what others post on your timeline? This setting controls what other individuals can see that has been posted on your timeline by others. The PLSD recommends you have this set to friends. To change your settings, click edit on the right hand side.
A gray box will appear with a drop down menu. In the drop down menu, you can select who can see posts that you have been tagged in on your timeline. Make your selection (see below) and then click close in the upper right hand corner of the box.

How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions? This controls tagging on your timeline. There are three categories: Review tags people add to your posts, when you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience if they aren’t already in it and who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded. Review Tags people add to your own posts before the tags appear on Facebook? This allows you to review tags that others want to add to status updates/photos that you have published. The The PLSD recommends you have this turned on so you know when others are trying to add tags to items on your timeline. To change this setting, click on the edit menu to the right (see below).
A gray box will appear with a drop down menu (see below). Selecting enabled from the drop down, means that you will review tags your friends have added to your content. Selecting disabled, turns this feature off. When done, select close in the upper right hand corner of the gray box. Note: It is important to know that when someone else ads a tag of you, individuals others than your friends may be able to see the post, depending on the combined security/privacy settings of your page and your friend who made the tag settings.

When you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience if they aren’t already in it? This setting gives you the ability to allow individuals other than your friends to see a tag on your timeline. Note: Setting this control does not prevent the friends of the individual that tagged you from seeing the tag. It only refers to what people see on your timeline. The PLSD recommends you set this to friends. To change this setting, click on edit on the right hand side (see below).
A gray box will appear with a drop down menu (see below). In the drop down menu, you can select who can see posts that others have tagged you in in on your timeline. Make your selection (see below) and then click close in the upper right hand corner of the box.
Who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded? This controls if Facebook suggests tagging you in photos that they think look like you in photos others upload. The PLSD recommends you set this to No One. To change this setting, click on edit on the right hand side (see below).
Facebook Security Settings 17 A gray box will appear with a drop down menu. In the drop down menu, you can select who sees tag suggestions for photos that look like you. Make your selection (see below) and then click close in the upper right hand corner of the box.

Blocking In this section you can manage the individuals and apps that you have blocked or want to block. To access the blocking settings, once logged in, click on the gear symbol tab in the upper right hand corner of the page. Then, select privacy settings from the drop down. Then, select “blocking” on the left hand side (see image below). If you are already in the privacy settings, just click on “blocking” on the left hand side. The new page that is brought up shows you the different ways to block users or apps. In each box where it says add name or email, you can type individual names or the app name to add them to the respective block list. If you would like to unblock an individual or an app, click the unblock next to their name.

Notifications Settings Notification settings control what and when Facebook tells you about changes on your Facebook page. To locate your notifications settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings� from the drop down. Then, select notifications from the categories on the left hand side (see below). If you are already in the account settings or privacy settings section, just click notifications on the left hand side.
Your notifcation settings will appear. There are two categories of notifications: how you get notifications, and what you get notifications about.
Facebook Security Settings 20 How You get Notifications This section outlines how you receive notifications about what happens on your Facebook account. The PLSD recommends that you receive notification in at least two different ways. This page briefly outlines your options.
On Facebook You do not need to do anything for this setting. Facebook users will always receive notifications in the upper left hand corner of their Facebook page. When you have a notification a red box will appear above the type of notification (friend request, message or other). The red box will contain a number with how many notifications you have pending in that category (see below).
By clicking on the type of notification, a drop down menu will appear with the highlights of your notifications. Scroll over and select specfic notifications for more details.
Email To view your email notification settings, click edit on the right hand side.
Facebook Security Settings 21 A gray box will appear (see next page). The PLSD recommends that you receive all notifications, except the ones you unsubscribe from. To view what you have unsubscribed from, (you may have to click see all and a number to view all of them). Make sure that you have only subscribed from notifications that you are comfortable with not receiving an email about. When you are done, hit close.

Push Notifications This setting controls alerts that you receive on your phone from facebook applications that you have installed. The settings are controlled in the actual application. The instructions for these are on page 26.
Text message This setting controls notifications that you receive on your mobile device via text message about activity/changes on your Facebook account. To change these settings, click on view on the right hand side. If you have not activated text messaging from Facebook to your phone, it will notify you of that and ask you to activate it. When you are done making changes, be sure to hit “save changes.�
Facebook Security Settings 22 What You Get Notified About This controls what activity/changes Facebook notifies you about. The PLSD recommends that you receive notifications EVERYTIME something happens on your Facebook account. If you manage a page or are involved in a school-related group, the PLSD recommends that you receive notifications for everything that happens on that page or in that group.
Activity that involves you Facebook now automatically notifies you if there is any activity that involves you or your account. Close Friends Activity This allows you to receive notifications about any activity that your “close friends� do. You can categorize people into different groups. If you turn this notification on, you will receive these notifications for anyone in this group. Tags This allows you to receive notifications when your tagged. The PLSD recommends you set this to anyone. Pages You Manage This allows you to receive notifications when anything happens on any pages you manage. To change these settings, click on edit on the right hand side. In order to receive notifications, make sure the box next to the page title is checked (see below).
Facebook Security Settings 23 Group Activity This allows you to receive notifications of any activity that happens in groups that you are part of. For any teacher who has a classroom Facebook group, this MUST be turned on. To insure you are getting notifications, click on edit in the upper right hand corner.
A list of all the groups you are a part of will appear. Be sure that the drop down menu to the right of the group has “all posts� selected (see below). When done click close.
App requests and activity This setting allows you to receive notifications from any apps that you use on your Facebook account. To see what apps you are receiving notificaitons from or change your settings, click on the edit button in the upper right hand corner.
Note: Many apps you download on your smartphone will ask you to agree to this before you can download the app.
Facebook Security Settings 24 A gray box will appear with a listing of all the apps that you use on your Facebook account. Any box that is checked, means you are receiving notifications from that app (see below).

Mobile In this section, you can add a mobile phone to your account. To locate the mobile settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings” from the drop down. Then, select mobile from the categories on the left hand side. If you are already in the account settings section, just click mobile on the left hand side. A cell phone number can only be listed on one account. If you have a personal and a professional account, DO NOT add your cell phone to the professional account. In the future you may be asked to verify your account using this number. If you have it listed on more than one account, you may run into issues confirming the accounts.
Lost Your Phone Settings
Lost Cell Phone If you happen to lose your cell phone and you have the facebook app download on your phone, be sure to visit your Facebook page immediately after you lost your phone. Navigate to the mobile page and click “lost your phone?” at the bottom of the page. This will walk you through steps to log you out of Facebook on your lost mobile phone. This will help ensure your Facebook privacy is protected.

Followers To locate the followers settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings” from the drop down. Then, select followers from the categories on the left hand side. If you are already in the account settings section, just click followers on the left hand side. This setting allows you to have people follow your public posts. Someone who “follows” you is not your friend unless you add them as your friend. If you wish to turn this setting on, make sure the page on the box is checked (see below).

Apps The section allows you to control settings for individuals apps, apps others use, instant personalization from apps and websites, and older versions of facebook mobile. On Facebook, your name, profile picture, cover photo, gender, networks, username, and user id are always publicly available, including to apps. Apps also have access to your friends list and any information you choose to make public. To view app settings, navigate to the apps sections. To locate the apps settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings” from the drop down. Then, select apps from the categories on the left hand side. If you are already in the account settings section, just click apps on the left hand side. Once there, all your apps will be listed in the center of the page (see below).
At the very top of the page, make sure “Use apps. Plugins, games and websites on Facebeook and elsewhere?” says on (see above). If not, click edit. A gray box will appear and select Turn Platform On. Then click close. It is important to check the settings for each app. Do this by clicking edit in the upper right hand corner. The PLSD recommends that all apps are only visible and share information with your friends.

Facebook Security Settings 28 Once you have reviewed the settings for all of your apps, you will want to scroll to the bottom of the page. Here you have three more settings: apps others use, instant personalization, and old versions of Facebook mobile.
Apps Others Use Apps others use controls what other users can take from your profile with them when they are using apps. To check these settings, click edit in the upper right hand corner. A gray box will appear (see below). The PLSD recommends that you uncheck everything. Be sure to click, save changes when done.

Instand Personalization This lets websites that you visit personalize your experience based on your Facebook profile, and friends. For example, the website may display a Facebook friends review. To check these settings, click edit in the upper right hand corner. A gray box will appear (see below). The PLSD recommends that you uncheck the enable personalization box at the bottom. Be sure to click, close when done.

Facebook Security Settings 29 Older Versions of Facebook for Mobile This setting controls the privacy of things posted using old Facebook mobile apps. The PLSD recommends that this be set to friends only. To check these settings, click edit in the upper right hand corner. Make sure the drop down arrow has friends selected. Then click close when done.

Ads To locate the ads settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings” from the drop down. Then, select ads from the categories on the left hand side. If you are already in the account settings section, just click ads on the left hand side. There are two sections to ads: third party sites and ads and friends (see below).
Third Party Sites Third party sites allows facebook in the future to use your name and picture in ads if they so chose. They currently do not do this but want to be covered if they change their policies in the future. The PLSD recommends you set this to No one. Ads and Friends Ads and friends is the pairing of friends and advertisements. If you like a page, this gives Facebook the right to show all your friends and use it as an “endorsement” for that page. The PLSD recommends you set this to No One. To check the settings for both of these, click edit in the upper right hand corner of each section. Make sure the drop down in that section has no one selected. Then click, save changes (see below).

Payments To locate the payments settings, click on the gear symbol in the upper right hand corner and then select “account settings� from the drop down. Then, select payments from the categories on the left hand side. If you are already in the account settings section, just click payments on the left hand side. Payments allows you to manage your Facebook credits, purchase history, methods and currency when purchasing anything on Facebook. Most often purchases are made for credits when playing games on Facebook. If you do not purchase anything on Facebook, you do not need to worry about this section.

Setting Privacy Controls Once you have set your privacy settings, you then need to set privacy controls. The settings in this section control what information from your Facebook profile you share with others. From the newsfeed page on facebook, click on edit profilt in the upper left hand corner under your name and profile picture (see below).
Edit Profile
Your profile will now appear in edit mode. For each section, there will be a drop down menu to the right of the edit field. Click on each downward arrow and you can select what information is available to whom. The PLSD recommends that you set everything to FRIENDS ONLY. The friends only is denoated with the symbole of two people (see below).
Done Editing
Select who sees what information. PLSD recommends Friends only for everything.
You will need to do this for each section and category. When you are done editing a section, click “Done Editing” to save changes. Do this for each item in every section. In edit mode, if you continue to scroll down, all the sections of your profile should appear (movies, tv shows, work, education, about met, family etc…).
