You might say “It’s just a cardboard box and an old radio.”, but by the end of the week it’s an arcade game and innovative jewelry piece. Combining portraits, scenes, and stories in pictures and words, we’ll look inward and outward for inspiration to create narratives of our lives, and begin to understand ourselves as figures in the larger world. Using memories and/ or photos as springboards for art, we’ll create contexts for the stories by adding elements of geography, landscape, history, interiors, and architecture. Each painting or drawing will serve as a trigger for expressive writing. You may choose to write a simple caption, a poem, a paragraph, or a short story narrating your artwork or using it as a point of departure.

Birds of the Berkshires: Discover the Zen of Birds Amy Taylor and Nancy Magnusson July 22 to 26 YA21SU13: monday to friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm citizens’ hall, stockbridge Location: Member / non member Tuition: $245 / $275

We will dye and sew a bird watcher’s field bag, craft a field guide and sketchbook, and tip toe into the Berkshire landscape. Discover Japanese brush stroke techniques to paint the extraordinary simplicity of our feathered friends. Using our “eagle eyes,” we will build up topographical models of the Berkshires. Explore sculpting with clay, felting with wool, modeling with wire and paper to construct a bird either observed or imagined. And, let’s try our hands at the ancient form of Haiku poetry where we discover the complexity of simplicity!

During the week we will dive into MUD, aka Clay, getting our hands dirty planting plants in our own pots, going on adventures to explore the beautiful nature that surrounds us and creating large and mini paintings, drawings and collages of the paradise we see and what we would like to see. This is a multi-sensory week from listening to our environment to tasting food from it, getting our hands messy and relaxing in the sunshine!

Character and Story Unleashed! Andrew Davis and Melanie Mowinski June 24 to July 5, no class July 4 YA25SU13: monday to friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm citizens’ hall, stockbridge Location: Member / non member Tuition: $414 / $450 ($230 / $250 per week)

We’re natural storytellers, inventing characters who navigate imaginary worlds, populating those worlds with fantastic creatures and defining those lands with abstracted landscapes. Over two weeks we’ll develop our own characters that will come to life in a variety of mediums: drawing, monoprinting, clay, fabric, collage, paint, cardboard, and more. Final projects will weave them into full-blown worlds and stories, in the form of handmade books, dioramas, or you decide!

On the Wall, In the Round, and Kinetic! In twodimensional art, the term “negative space” refers to the area surrounding the “positive space”, which is usually the subject of the work. In threedimensional art this intriguing concept becomes even more of an adventure! In this class we will take our ideas from 2D to 3D using paper and found wood. We will explore the many ways of making connections with wood. The importance of sketching, problem solving, and the safe use of hand tools will be emphasized.

Journey to Ganymede Nicole Peskin and Yura Adams July 22 to August 2 YA27SU13: monday to friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm citizens’ hall, stockbridge Location: Member / non member Tuition: $460 / $500 ($230 / $250 per week)

Inspired by the 1902 fantastic and playful film “A Trip to the Moon” by the Melies Brothers, students will create their own futuristic vision of a trip to the largest moon of Jupiter using installation, painting, assemblage and costume design! Working primarily with a black and white palette, space is transformed with painted installation and backlit projections to set the scene, a rocket is created with found materials, and paper costumes and masks are designed and produced for blast-off, touch-down celebration and armaments. Students will work on individual projects and in collaboration to design and produce a site specific installation that looks at the future through the eyes of the past.

WALL TO WALL ART: From Cave Painting to Grafitti John Clarke and Lauren Clark August 5 to 16 YA28SU13: monday to friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm citizens’ hall, stockbridge Location: Member / non member Tuition: $460 / $500 ($230 / $250 per week)

Humans have always left their marks on the walls around them. From the oldest known cave art to current day grafitti, people have been inspired to decorate their walls. In this two week multimedia program, we’ll examine how we as humans have decorated the walls around us throughout history. We’ll examine ancient cave art, the wall carvings of ancient Assyria, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, tapestries of European castles, famous murals, wall paper patterns, grafitti and more. Enchanted Garden Adventure

Explore complex ideas about how recycling can impact our environment and how to make art from the materials found around us. We’ll create art from the ground up with (mostly) found and recycled materials by gathering wood, leaves, and other items on the Little Red property to make homemade paper and then sew that paper together into a sketchbook or field journal. We will then take the homemade book outdoors to record sights and experiences. Mini lessons will include found sculpture, paper sculpting, sculpture made in nature (like artist Andy Goldsworthy), how to make your own paintbrush, how to use surface tension to hold objects together, how to sew paper to make a book, life drawing techniques, and other skills as needed. Important visual arts skills and environmental stewardship ideas will be weaved together along the way as each camper is encouraged to explore materials, express their perspective and opinion, and discover their personal artistic voice.

Working with Toys: An Art Camp (Ages 7 to 12) Nova Rockwell

Tuition: $185

In this camp, we will use artist Jarvis Rockwell’s Maya installation as our inspiration. This Sanskrit name was chosen to describe his work which includes the pyramid of toys Mr. Rockwell first created more than ten years ago for Mass MoCA. Since then, his pyramid has traveled as far away as Arizona and been a local mainstay in North Adams as part of MCLA’s DownStreet Art. Beginning July 13 it will be a part of Mr. Rockwell’s retrospective at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. The first day of camp Mr. Rockwell will visit and talk to the children about his art work and explain how he created his pyramid. The following days they will explore the theme of Maya and toys, working from observation and imagination, with activities like drawing, painting, and making simple toys. Children will ultimately design their own mini Maya structure out of wood pieces that they will paint and then cover with miniature toy figures. All materials will be provided, including toys (though children are free to contribute their own!) IS183 encourages campers to see the exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum before camp begins- free museum passes are available at libraries if needed.

It’s all about the ideas! Thinking and playing with concepts, images and words are the backbone of graphic design. We will take a look at some good, great and bad design to analyze why some designs are successful and others not so much. After examining the elements of design: illustration, photography, typography and most importantly the message, students will go through the process of designing a project. First, we’ll work individually on a common assignment. Next you can work on your own message, so bring any ideas or projects you might like to work on. The format will be a poster or card and can focus on an announcement, event or invitation. Using your own illustration, photograph and sometimes white space, students will try their hand at conveying a message. Production within the class will be through mock-up stage. The basics of how work is produced and reproduced digitally will be discussed, along with simple technical information about how to take your new work online. Expect to gain insight and perspective into the art and process of graphic design and the know how to proceed on your own!

The picture book, as it is today, is a relatively new art form. It elevates the image in a narrative with a small number of words to convey meaning. Generally for children ages 3-8, the audience and reach of picture books is also widening. This workshop will offer an overview of the art of the picture book and how a picture book goes from idea to marketing and publication. Using examples from the start of the modern picture book to the finest in contemporary picture books, we will look at the art of visual storytelling and the role of the picture book in the lives of children. Participants will work with the interplay of word and image and have the opportunity to work on their own “dummy book” either from their own story or an existing text. The dummy book includes the text and images in sketch form and 1-2 pieces of finished art. It is the standard form for creating picture books and presenting them to potential publishers. This workshop is open to experienced artists interested in picture books as well as beginners, for those serious about publication or anyone who wants to learn more about visual storytelling. Rescue Your Artwork: Give Your Unloved Paintings a Second Chance Linda Clayton PD06SP13: Location:

May 4, 10am to 4pm and may 5, 10am to 3pm Saturday AND SUNDAY (TWO DAYS) citizens’ hall, stockbridge

With IS183’s studio as our home base, we will explore the landscape of the Berkshires at magnificent sites that offer varied views. Through observation and experimentation you will capture the warmth of a luscious field and the saturated blue of a summer sky with direction, clarity and particular emphasis on the essentials that make a dynamic composition personally expressive. With inspiration from contemporary abstract artists we’ll simplify reality, aiming to paint only the essence of what we see. Expect inspiration! This course is open to all levels of painting experience.

This course can be taken on its own or as a follow-up to Composition I. Composition II takes as its premise the fact that any work of art can become instructive by learning how to decipher the visual elements that are used to create an artwork. Each week, students will study a different master composition and create their own version of the composition. These exercises will not be copying by rote, but a serious interpretive exercise in which students learn how to analyze a composition and, using their medium of choice, create an artwork that is uniquely their own. Open to all media which can include drawing, painting or mixed media.

Why are viewers drawn to one image over another? Composition in art is the way an artwork’s visual elements work together to form an organized whole—conveying its message and “hanging together.” This course will introduce students to the simplest ways to make a composition more dynamic such as how to establish a center of interest; create a visual path that leads the viewer’s eye through the work; organizing formal elements; and creating unity in a finished piece. Each week students will study a different concept in composition with short exercises and projects. Open to all media which can include drawing, painting or mixed media.

From cave paintings to contemporary media there is no image so universal as the human form. There is also probably nothing more intimidating for the beginner or anything quite as effective for artists in portraying the human condition! Whether you think you “can’t even draw a stick figure” or you just want to sharpen your skills, this class is geared for all levels of experience. Each class will work from a live model, exploring different ways to interpret the figure and the many techniques used in life drawing. From quick gesture drawings that capture movement and energy to longer poses that focus on subtle shifts of light and detail. Students will gain a working knowledge of anatomy and proportions and practice the skills and methods involved in drawing the human form.

What! You’re a painter and you’re never tried using an oil stick on top of your unresolved paintings? Then you’re in for a treat. An oil bar is a hunk of oil paint that’s shaped like a fat crayon. It rolls on thick and smooth and is extremely fun to use. It’s like painting with frosting. No mediums, no smells, no toxic products. And it can move your unfinished or unloved paintings to the next level. New painters are welcome. Just bring any image from a newspaper or a photograph. More experienced painters, bring some of your pieces that are desperate for improvement. We all have them. Get ready, this will be fun!

This workshop is what you need to gain confidence in drawing, and to tune up your drawing skills. Perspective, shading, value, and learning to “see” are essential to drawing. These skills will be explored through group demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and individualized instruction. The primary focus will be on drawing the still life, first learning how to draw simple geometric forms, and then more complex, organic forms. 19th century French painter and upholder of classical tradition JeanAuguste-Dominique Ingres declared, “Drawing is the probity of art”. In other words, attaining a solid grasp on your drawing skills will benefit all your artistic endeavors.

Figure drawing is perhaps the most challenging subject an artist encounters. The figure is also one of the most enduring themes in art, spanning from prehistory to today. The figure can be simply drawn, as in a 2-minute gesture, or carefully rendered over the span of many hours. This workshop is a wonderful introductory course to drawing the figure. Charcoal and chalk pastels will be used to create a series of quick gesture drawings, while graphite will be used to create a fully rendered drawing of the figure. Casey has 8 years of experience teaching figure drawing and painting, and holds an M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art, a graduate school that specializes in training artists in the figurative tradition. This workshop is open to all levels of ability.

Are you trying to move beyond cellphone photography? Intimidated by that digital SLR you got for your birthday? It has never been easier to learn photography since the invention of the digital SLR camera, which provides the user with instant gratification and creative freedom. This one day, four hour, mini-course will give students a taste of how to understand and effectively use a digital SLR camera system. We will decipher its buttons, functions and possibilities it provides, leaving you ready to go out and shoot with confidence this summer! Students must have their own digital SLR camera and instruction manual. A laptop computer, to process photos, is recommended but not required.

What does the shift in seasons look like from our personal perspective? How do outward elements like changes in the landscape and light affect our personal realm? In this class, we will look at the work of photographers such as William Eggleston, Rebecca Norris Webb, Stephen Shore, Raymond Meeks, Palmer Davis, and Jitka Hanzlova among others who capture simple, often seemingly banal visual moments in a exceptionally personal and intimate way. We will work through exercises to explore how light, space, mood, frame and even subtle change of perspective can convey an emotional, personal tone. Students can expect to go outdoors during the workshop and create at least 10 images to form a mini-portfolio. A digital camera is required; laptop for viewing images would be helpful but is not essential.

Feelings of isolation, mental blocks to starting or completing work, anxiety about showing and earning a living are some of the issues the group might identify as salient. Use of dreams, fantasy, reverie are potential areas for exploration. Our aim is to support the individual in doing what he or she wants to do - to facilitate and respect each artist’s vision. This group is open to both practicing and aspiring artists.

FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friend: This Summer IS183 invites you to take a class, visit a studio or in school program, attend an opening and celebrate with us on July 19 at the barn gallery opening and celebration, our annual BBQ in a Barn. As you browse this catalog take note of the many opportunities to creatively engage and discover hands-on the transformative effect of art and art making.

The creative experience of one individual has a ripple effect—touching other community members in surprising ways and inspiring a culture of curiosity and possibility. IS183’s faculty artists are arts educators who are teaching not only technique and media but, just as importantly, creative thinking, that everyone has a unique voice and that there are many ways to look at the same thing. Art is a tool to investigate our ever-changing world, explore our traditions and document our experience. That is the power that art has, the potential: art as a positive social force. If you have not had the chance to take a class or attend an opening, please do. And if you have not already, become a member of Club 183, the philanthropic heart and soul of our community art school. In addition to providing direct support for IS183’s programs, members benefit from reduced tuition for classes, and access to private events like our Winter 2012 Contemporary Circle Dinner and Talk with Artist, Joe Wheaton (pictured opposite). Thank you for your friendship, vision and support—as IS183 continues its work to provide collaborative and innovative arts education in our community!

BERKSHIRE RESIDENCY EXCHANGE IS183’s 2013 Berkshire Residency Exchange Artists:

Launched in 2012 the BRE brings emerging contemporary artists from all over the world to Berkshire County. The four week residencies are designed so that BRE artists can engage deeply with the community — interacting with artists, arts professionals, and, in a unique aspect of the program, at-risk children and youth through integration in IS183’s arts enrichment programs. The BRE raises the profile of the visual arts and deepens the connections we are building with some of the most vulnerable members of our community. This year we are pleased to welcome three international contemporary artists to the Berkshires Tuesday, July 16 through Monday, August 12, the peak of the summer arts season!

Integration with Arts Enrichment Programs

Malik Sajad, Kashmir

Participation in IS183’s in-school arts enrichment programs (see page 28) is a unique aspect of the BRE artists’ experience and one which has perhaps the greatest impact on the artist and the community. Delivered at no charge to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, IS183’s multi-week programs effect meaningful and positive change in participants by giving them the tools to use the arts to perceive and shape the world around them. The BRE artists too, expand their cultural boundaries, as they work closely with the students to help them achieve their vision.

Cynthia Atwood, a resident of the Berkshires for over twenty-two years exhibiting both locally and regionally, uses sewing techniques to create sensuous, provocative work that investigates how we perceive the world beyond our immediate reality. Beck Balken’s artistic output is a study of persona, self and consciousness, and how spiritual emergence of the self unfolds over time. He has an extensive exhibition record both nationally and internationally, and his work is included in the collections of the Scottish National Gallery of Contemporary Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Rubin Museum. Artists interested in applying to do a future Citizens’ Hall Residency should check is183.org for details on the next round!

IS183’s In School Programming Learning Through Arts (LTA) IS183’s K-12th grade arts enrichment curriculum The Vision Art is a catalyst for positive engagement; and sustained engagement creates a new model for success—success defined by positive risk-taking and personal expression. Imagine a community that expects for every child to be well versed in the cultural richness of the region, to have an understanding of their unique voice and perspective and to have practiced—through a fun creative program— problem solving and innovative thinking. With the help of our program collaborators, sponsors and IS183’s Club 183, that is what we are working towards! The LTA Program IS183 Art School’s “Learning Through Arts” (LTA) program is an after-school and Summer arts enrichment curriculum for Massachusetts students in Grades K-12. The program reinforces academic curriculum goals, as outlined by the Massachusetts Department of Education, through the study of art. LTA is offered in schools throughout Berkshire County over the course of the academic year in eightweek modules and in the Summer at area schools in a multi-week camp format for our regions most vulnerable children and youth. Though LTA is designed to be fun for the students, the program

is rigorous. All curricula promote problem solving, creativity, experimentation and collaboration. And, in addition to reinforcing and expanding upon what the students are learning in the classroom, each module teaches specific artistic concepts and skills. To ensure a consistently high quality program is delivered, IS183 uses the National Institute on Out-of School Time (NIOST) assessment system to assess the outcome. The Impact The benefits of IS183’s approach are consistent with an Americans for the Arts report on the potential for transformative impact through arts education. • The arts reach students who might otherwise slip through the cracks • The arts reach students with different learning styles • The arts create a feeling of connection and cooperation between students • The arts create schools that are exciting places for learning and discovery

More than 1100 K–12 students served throughout the year 28

“The success of [IS183’s Learning Through Arts offerings] is attributed to their well-rounded, quality curriculum that ties into Massachusetts core curriculum frameworks. Additionally the IS183 staff relates exceptionally well to our students.” –Elizabeth Baker, Pittsfield Public Schools 21st CCLC Coordinator 2012/2013 Program Sites 05
