History of the Tilma Relic

In 1941, Archbishop John J. Cantwell of Los Angeles led a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The visit eased tensions between the Church and State in Mexico, whose relationship was strained at the time, and the event was received favorably in all quarters. The Archbishop of Mexico City was so grateful for the visit that he sent a relic of Juan Diego’s tilma to Archbishop Cantwell in Los Angeles. This piece of the tilma, which is approximately a half-inch square, is the only known relic of the tilma in the United States. The relic is draped over a 17th century statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and it has been held under the care of Msgr. Francis J. Weber in the archives of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Considering that the tilma is made of natural agave fibers, it is nothing short of miraculous that this relic and the rest of the tilma, enshrined in Mexico City, have survived for nearly five centuries. According to experts, the cloth should have disintegrated hundreds of years ago. In 2003, His Eminence Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles graciously permitted a tour of the relic, which was organized by the Apostolate for Holy Relics and co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Holy Cross Family Ministries. That tour of more than 20 U.S. cities spread devotion to Our Lady during the Year of the Rosary and commemorated the first year of Juan Diego’s sainthood. It is through the gracious consideration of Cardinal Mahony and of Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles — where the relic is now enshrined — that the tilma relic is present at this celebration. 4

Featuring Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted was installed as the Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona, in 2003, and serves as the shepherd of its more than 600,000 Catholics. Prior to that, he was Bishop of Wichita, Kansas, and rector/president of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Ordained a priest in 1973, he spent 16 years in Rome where he earned a master’s in Theology and a doctorate in Canon Law, and served for nine years in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. Bishop Olmsted has served on a number of committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Bishop William E. Lori was installed as Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 2001. He was elected Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus in 2005, and as such is responsible for the spiritual development of 1.78 million Knights. Bishop Lori was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of Washington in 1995, where he had served as a priest since 1977. Bishop Lori holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from The Catholic University of America, and has served as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Doctrine. He is a member of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities and the Ad-Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage. Msgr. Eduardo Chávez holds a doctorate in Church History and serves as Postulator of the Cause for Canonization of Saint Juan Diego. He is the Founder and Rector of the Institute of Guadalupan Studies. As Postulator, Msgr. Chávez has made many contributions to the study of the Guadalupan event, addressing major academic institutions internationally and publishing more than 28 books and articles, including Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love which he co-authored with Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. Msgr. Chávez was named a Canon of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in 2005. In 2002, he was appointed the first rector of the Catholic University Lumen Gentium of the Archdiocese of Mexico. Carl A. Anderson is Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, the world’s largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.78 million members in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Philippines and Poland. He is author of the New York Times bestseller A Civilization of Love and co-author of several other books. From 1983 to 1987, Mr. Anderson served in various positions of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. In 1988, he became the founding vice president and first dean of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C. He serves as a papal appointee to several Vatican bodies: the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; the Pontifical Council for Social Communications; the Pontifical Council for the Laity; the Pontifical Council for the Family; and the Pontifical Academy for Life. 5

Featuring Immaculée Ilibagiza is a living example of faith put into action. Her life was dramatically transformed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide when she spent 91 days hiding in a cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house. She credits her survival to prayer and to a rosary given to her by her father. Immaculée studied electrical and mechanical engineering at the National University of Rwanda. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust.

Alexander Acha released his debut album “Voy” in the United States in December. The album, which went gold in Mexico last summer, featured the lead single “Te Amo.” The hit song quickly rose to number 35 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart. Acha is the son of Latin pop star Emmanuel. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dana is one of Ireland’s most successful entertainers. She is best known for the song “We Are One Body,” which she wrote as the theme song for World Youth Day 1993 in Denver, Colorado. From 1999 to 2004, Dana served as a member of the European Parliament, representing Ireland’s ConnachtUlster constituency. She has spoken at American and European colleges and universities on the subject of the European Union. In the spring of 2004, Dana became the first woman to be awarded the prestigious San Benedetto Award for her outstanding work in defending life and the family.

Eduardo Verástegui is a Mexican model, singer and actor. He is best known for his lead role in the movie “Bella,” which took one of the top honors at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. In December 2005, he established the non-profit organization “Manto de Guadalupe.” The organization’s mission is to build houses in communities of extreme poverty and to assist Latina girls facing unplanned pregnancies.

Filippa Giordano, a native of Palermo, Italy, is a global fashion and musical icon. Starting her career at the age of nine, she has risen to stardom and is best known for her classical style. Most recently, she wrote and co-produced her album “Capriccio” in 2008. The album, which was recorded almost entirely in Spanish, spent several months at the top of the Mexican charts. 6

Featuring Elisa Nájera Gualito was born in Celaya, Guanajuato, and was crowned Nuestra Belleza Mexico (Miss Mexico) on October 5, 2007, in Manzanillo, Colima. Miss Nájera finished as fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe competition held in Vietnam on July 13, 2008.

Ambassador Hilario G. Davide Jr. is the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations. A former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, he was an educator, legislator and presidential adviser before his appointment as his country’s top diplomat to the United Nations. Ambassador Davide is a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize, for his accomplishments in government service.

Capt. Alfredo N. Fuentes is a 9/11 hero who was trapped beneath the collapsed North Tower of the World Trade Center while coordinating rescue operations as acting Battalion Chief for the New York City Fire Department, Marine Division. In addition to 9/11, Capt. Fuentes was also a first responder to the Oklahoma City bombing. He was born in Ecuador, is a member of the Knights of Columbus, and is the author of American By Choice.

Christopher J. Godfrey is the President and Founder of Life Athletes, Inc., and a member of the Indiana Bar. Prior to graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School, Godfrey played nine years of professional football. As the starting right guard for the Super Bowl XXI champion New York Giants, he earned honors as All-Pro NFL Films and All-NFC (AP, UPI). He also played on three University of Michigan Rose Bowl teams. Godfrey is also a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

Hon. Graydon Nicholas is from the Maliseet Nation and was born and raised on the Tobique Indian Reserve in New Brunswick. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Math from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, a Bachelor of Law from the University of New Brunswick Law School in Fredericton and a Master’s of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from St. Francis Xavier University in 1994 and from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2002. He is a new member of the Knights of Columbus. 7

Director Matthew S. Sprinkle Saint Thomas Aquinas Schola Cantorum is the resident professional choral ensemble of Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Avondale, Arizona. The ensemble was founded in 2005, and over the past four years, under the direction of Matthew S. Sprinkle, the highly desired 20-voice schola has developed into a disciplined ensemble, known for its flexibility and responsiveness. The primary responsibility of the Schola Cantorum is to provide musical leadership and present choral offerings, relevant to the day and season, weekly at the Sunday 10:45 a.m. Solemn Mass, and for the major feasts and various liturgical celebrations throughout the Church year. The ensemble focuses its work mainly on the performance of Gregorian chant, polyphony from the Renaissance period and the compositions of 20th century American choral composers. Saint Thomas Aquinas Schola Cantorum made its professional debut abroad in March 2006, performing in Rome for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. While in Italy, the choir performed for a capacity audience at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome. On the same performance tour, the ensemble sang a Solemn High Mass in the Crypt Church of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Benedict at the Abbey of Monte Cassino. The ensemble most recently completed a performance tour in November 2008 to Portugal and Spain. The schola sang for Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal and also opened the 5th Centennial Celebration of the New Cathedral in Salamanca, Spain, with a concert of Marian repertoire for a capacity audience. The Schola Cantorum maintains a healthy concert schedule in the Phoenix metropolitan area and also serves as the principal vocal ensemble for major diocesan celebrations. The ensemble is planning a tour to Rome in the fall of 2010 with the Saint Thomas Aquinas Choir, where they will again perform for the Holy Father and throughout Italy. The Orchestra Matthew S. The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, a parish priest at Saint Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Now honored by the Church as a Venerable Servant of God, Father McGivney created the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society to provide financial security and religious support to the Catholics of his day. The Order has grown into the world’s largest lay Catholic organization with more than 1.78 million members and 13,000 councils worldwide. Last year, Knights donated more than $150 million to charities and provided more than 68 million hours of volunteer service. Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $1.325 billion to charity and provided nearly 626 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes.

The Institute of Guadalupan Studies was created by the Archdiocese of Mexico City and the Movement for the Canonization of Saint Juan Diego, soon after he was canonized on July 31, 2002. The Institute continues to research Saint Juan Diego’s life and the Guadalupan event, and to bring the saint’s message of hope to the attention of the world.

The Diocese of Phoenix was founded in 1969, with Our Lady of Guadalupe as the diocesan patroness, but the history of the Catholic Church in the area dates back to the 16th-century Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries, who worked with the native populations. Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino established the first permanent mission in southern Arizona in the late 1600s. Part of a rapidly growing area of the Southwest, the diocese today has a Catholic population of more than 600,000 in 93 parishes and 22 mission parishes. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted serves as the fourth bishop of the diocese.

The Archdiocese of Mexico City, with some 9 million Catholics, is the largest archdiocese in the world. Founded as a diocese in 1527, its history goes back to the early European explorers in the New World. Its founding bishop was Franciscan Friar Juan de Zumárraga, who in 1531 received a message from layman Juan Diego and the miraculous tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1546, the diocese was elevated to the status of metropolitan see (archdiocese), which today is headed by His Eminence Norberto Cardinal Rivera Carrera, Primate of Mexico. The miraculous tilma which bears the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is enshrined in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe within the archdiocese. 16
