from the

FOUNDER AND CEO

Launched in 2017, The KNOW Women began as a way to bring more attention to dynamic women doing remarkable things in the Phoenix metro. We knew there were an outstanding number of women impacting the community and making big strides in their industries. Our goal was to get those women out from behind their computer screens and into the public eye. Thus, we created the KNOW Book, a carefully curated publication that would feature vision-led women in a glamorous and authentic style. As the momentum grew and we recognized the need for more, we launched our Collaborative around the women featured in our KNOW Book. Our mix & mingles soon ensued and we witnessed incredible things happening. We saw our women doing business with each other, creating friendships, supporting each other, collaborating on projects together, and so much more. What started as a fun project to spotlight women, has turned into a full-blown movement. The KNOW Women has expanded beyond its birthplace of Phoenix, Arizona; its aim is to launch in every major city across the United States and Canada.

LEAH HOWARD CULTIVATED COCKTAILS Being a native of Asheville NC, there’s something special about watching the city grow and thrive. Leah is honored to be in the small business community and give back to the place that made her who she is today. The Distillery business wasn’t in her plan, but sometimes things happen for just the right reasons. Leah’s husband, Taylor, had a desire to see a distillery here in beer City, and she fell in love with his plan. Running the day to day, fighting for the distilling community to have more options and freedoms, seeing the enjoyment of people sipping their product, are just a few of the things that really make this a dream come true. They’re cultivating an experience for the craft drinker at Cultivated Cocktails, that takes you from raw ingredients to craft cocktail. A lifestyle, for those who enjoy sipping on something finer and carefully created. PHOTO CREDIT: STUDIO 828 PHOTOGRAPHY

ANDREA SCADE OWNER + DOER OF ALL OF THE THINGS, ALL OF THEM. Andrea, husband David, and son Axel [aka “The Boss”], opened Black Diamond Distillery in February 2018, making it the first ever craft distillery in St. Albert, AB.

But after a lengthy career as a Strength + Conditioning Coach, craft distilling is a far cry from where Andrea’s journey began. She’s always had a passion for the entrepreneur-life and never been shy about working in a male-dominated industry, holding true in the world of distilling. What started as a hobby has proven to be worth the long hours, crazy schedule and non-stop learning. “The community’s

excitement for what we do is really what drives us to keep growing”. It’s been a whirlwind, having only met in late 2014, Andrea and David dated, married, had their first child, started a business, and are now expecting their second kiddo in September 2019! “I wouldn’t trade a single minute of our crazy life!”.

AMANDA HOOVER STRAIN Amanda Strain has always had a love for food. She began traveling the world at only 15 years old as an international model and it took her from France to New York and all over Europe where she experienced unforgettable culinary adventures. Eventually it brought her to Milan where Amanda’s love for food turned to passion. When she returned home at the age of 22, she began her work in the service industry. She shifted into nursing school and while she thrived, she shortly realized it was not the career for her. Her next step was interior design and is currently her educational pursuit. All the while, her passion didn’t fade. Her talent for hosting parties and planning events, holidays, and get-togethers for family and friends began to grow into something more. CURED took form and Amanda is ecstatic to be running a charcuterie based catering business in a community she’s always called home.

MARIEL MONTERO SENA HUMA MEXICAN COMFORT I was born in Puebla, a city in the centre of Mexico, and learned to appreciate good home-cooking from my Abuelita (grandmother). After graduating from 5 years of culinary school I looked forward to travelling and honing my skills at various restaurants in Mexico, Spain and Montreal, Canada. I saw Canada as a land of great opportunities where I could realize a dream of opening my own restaurant to feature the

Mexican home-style cooking I grew up with. I came to Canada in 2007, became a contestant on Chopped Canada Season 1, and experimented with several well-received “Taco Days” pop-ups before opening my own establishment, HUMA, in 2015. I’m proud to say I became a Canadian citizen in 2017. The opportunity to be successful in any business venture in Canada, is definitely available to anyone willing to do the work. A passion for cooking and sharing my Abuela’s recipes has been realized in this country I now call home. PHOTO CREDIT: JINSEI PHOTOGRAPHICS

ASHLEY HAYWOOD EMBREW Ashley Haywood has always had a need for efficiency. Ten years ago, as she was drinking her daily tea, she realized she wanted to eliminate the step of adding sweetener to her mug so she could easily enjoy a perfect cup of tea anywhere. So, she did what anyone would do and searched for a sweetened tea bag to buy on the Internet. The problem was... nothing existed. After several years of waiting for someone else to make one, Ashley created Embrew— the first company to make a high-quality, ethically-sourced, sweetened tea bag that produces the perfect cup of lightly sweetened tea in a single step. Embrew blends teas like Creamy Honey Oolong, Bourbon Smoked White and Amber Black Maple with unique craft sweeteners for an unforgettable and ultra-convenient tea experience. NANCY CALABRESE FENWAY HOTEL

Take an abandoned building and bring it back to life? Yes, please! Fenway Hotel, once known as the Grand Lady of Dunedin, was THE place to spend the season back in the 30’s and 40’s. Artists, explorers, sports stars, and writers all spent time adding to the composition that was Fenway. Celebrated for its Mediterranean architecture and fabulous location overlooking the sound, Fenway was saved time and again as it transformed from hotel to college to university. But this timeless building would fall into disrepair in the 2000’s and would need TLC to once again fill the halls with jazz tunes that played here years ago.

“We reopened the Fenway in the fall of 2018,” said Nancy Calabrese, director of sales of the hotel. “Filling the Fenway with weddings, social events, musical programming and activities, all while delighting our guests in vintage touches and long-forgotten pastimes has been a dream come true!”

SPECIAL EDITION: FOOD & BEVERAGE 2019 The KNOW Book: Food & Beverage Section is an annual compilation publication that recognizes all of the women featured in the KNOW Book’s Food & Beverage section for 2019. Every woman featured in the KNOW Book has been vetted through peer-review. Because our mission is to showcase the best and brightest, the only way one can claim their slot is through invitation.
