NORDIC IMPULSES The 58th Bergen International Festival 26 May–9 June 2010 www.fib.no

FRIGHT AND DELIGHT children love being frightened: ‘Where’s baby gone? Boo!’ Then they scream in delight, shouting ‘Again, again!’ This mixture of delight and fright seems to fulfill a basic human need. We are fascinated by what scares us, what disturbs us and what challenges us. The relationship between fright and delight has also inspired many artists. The devil himself was traditionally regarded as a master fiddler, and when the best folk musicians strike up a tune, you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to Old Nick. The circus artist without

a safety net makes us quiver in excitement and scream with joy. What pushes limits and disturbs our equilibrium is magically enticing. It may be a matter of feeling the fright but successfully mastering it. Or perhaps it reminds us of the fine line between control and chaos. This year’s Bergen International Festival programme invites you to some frightfully delightful experiences which only theatre and music can provide.

‘A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans.’ koyaanisqatsi (1982) is said to be the most influential and radical combination of sound and image since Disney’s Fantasia. The music for this ground-breaking film, directed by Godfrey Reggio, was composed by Philip Glass, who is at the forefront of American minimalism and has received several Oscar nominations for his film music. The Hopi Indian word koyaanisqatsi means ‘a life out of balance’. In the rich film collage consumption, war and technology stand in bleak contrast to grandiose natural scenery, while the film at the same time reveals beauty in completely unexpected places. Following his successful live performances of the Koyaanisqatsi music, Philip Glass recently reworked the music for orchestra, and last summer he gave the world premiere of the orchestral version at the legendary Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In Bergen he will be performing with his own ensemble alongside the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. The performance will be the European premiere of the orchestral version of Koyaanisqatsi, and Philip Glass’s first visit to Norway. Supported by the Embassy of the United States, Norway.

‘for many, nikolaj znaider is already the best violinist of the world today’, wrote Die Presse. Nikolaj Znaider and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra have already successfully collaborated in Norway and abroad, and are looking forward to presenting Schumann’s music at the 2010 Bergen International Festival. ‘If the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is always as good as it was in the last master concert at the Philharmonie, it is time for the upper echelons of orchestra music to close ranks – right at the top too’, was the verdict of the Cologne newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger last March. Schumann’s Violin Concerto, one of his last major works, suffered a traumatic birth and remained unknown for over eighty years. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra last performed it in 1975. Schumann sketched out his bright, colour-

ful ‘Spring’ Symphony in the course of a few days in January 1841. Its first performance two months later was conducted by Felix Mendelssohn, who also conducted Schumann’s autobiographical second symphony five years later. After the Bergen Philharmonic made its BBC Proms debut in 2007, critical plaudits and public acclaim alike acknowledged the quality of an ensemble with with a centuries-old pedigree. In this concert they join forces with Nikolaj Znaider and Saalem Abboud Ashkar. Schumann’s well-known Piano Concerto in A minor, lyrical and romantic, is believed to have been a source of inspiration for Grieg’s Piano Concerto in the same key. Symphony No 3 is rustic in style, light and optimistic, while No 4 with its inner unity and flowing nature resembles a symphonic poem.

ole bull made the whole world dance – in 2010 we celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth in great style in Grieghallen. The elite of Norwegian musicians is joined by the celebrated Russian violinist Vadim Repin, and the event is hosted by the popular Norwegian violinist Arve Tellefsen. ‘Ole Bull is one of the most important characters in Norwegian history. He appeared at a time when the country was totally devoid of selfconfidence, and he was an inspiration not only in musical circles but indeed for all the arts in the young nation of Norway,’ says Arve Tellefsen. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, one of Norway’s greatest nation-building poets, described Ole Bull as a

‘party moment’, and this evening’s entertainment consists of a long queue of great moments. We shall hear Bull’s own compositions and works by his contemporaries, and will also be treated to the world premiere of a work by Nils Henrik Asheim. There will be almost twenty musicians on the stage, and as is appropriate for a celebration, there will also be speeches and dancing. The celebration concert is produced in association with Dextra Musica, Sparebankstiftelsen DnB NOr, and is part of the programme of Ole Bull 2010. We also celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ole Bull’s birth by presenting a comprehensive instrument exhibition and free concerts in the city centre. read more on page 34. bergen international festival 2010

one of norway’s most versatile instrumentalists, Nils Petter Molvær, expands into big band format for the first time. Molvær’s music takes on a new dimension when he builds it up and out with Bergen Big Band. Much of the music has never been heard before. Molvær is known for his characteristic style, which combines jazz with elements from Scandinavian folk music, hip-hop and techno. In the hands of the Norwegian composer a variety of musical styles meld effortlessly into unique dramatic soundscapes of profound intensity. As a trumpeter he has received numerous awards, including several Spellemann awards (the Norwegian Grammy Award). The ‘immaculate Bergen Big Band’ (The Guardian) is the regional big band for the west of 12

seven people at the brink of death. One drowning, one beaten to death, and yet another bursting with cancer … In glimpses they reveal bits of memories and thoughts at the terminal stage. They sleeplessly throw themselves from side to side in bed at night. They frantically howl against the walls. Or they whisper to an absent God in hope of relief … Like a volcano perpetually exploding inside – a volcano that will not die out as long as they still live. In VOICES the controversial Catalan director Calixto Bieito creates a modern passion about the suffering of Man. VOICES is heavily based on music and sound and draws on the impact the classic passion has on its audience. Fragments of text and music are woven into a carpet of sounds. All blended with strongly appealing songs of

well-known artists like Nick Cave, PJ Harvey and Björk. VOICES is a coproduction between the Betty Nansen Theatre from Denmark and Bergen International Festival.

the shadows around the lake svartediket (black dyke) conceal the misdeeds of a whole town, misdeeds so dark that even God himself shuts his eyes to them. The drinking water reservoir Lake Svartediket in Bergen was until the 19th century the scene of some gruesome events. Unwanted children are said to have been drowned in the lake, and no one knows how many people have taken their own lives in its murky depths. Svartediket is the world’s first black metal musical. It’s based on the true story of a small family that had to relinquish its new-born baby to the pastor at the inner end of the Isdal valley by Lake Svartediket. Aided and abetted by Bergen’s most notorious midwife, ‘Matja the Slugger’, he is said 14

bergen international festival 2010

to have killed hundreds of children and sunk them in the lake. The audience follows the family’s fateful struggle against this hitherto unknown murdering couple in Norwegian history. Kristian Gaahl, known from bands such as Gorgoroth and one of the most prominent figures on the international black metal scene, plays a central character. The cast also includes Sigurd Sele, who was Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at DNS in 2008.

the opera anne pedersdotter takes us back to Bergen at the end of the sixteenth century, when the whole of Europe was affected by gruesome witch trials. The trial of Anne Pedersdotter is one of the most dramatic in Norway, and holds a special place in history, possibly because she belonged to high Bergen society and was convicted by her own powerful friends. Edvard Fliflet Bræin’s opera is a gripping love story. The younger wife of a priest falls for her stepson, who is of the same age, and their romantic involvement rapidly turns into an obsession. When Anna’s husband shortly afterwards

falls ill and dies, few people consider his death coincidental. This performance takes place in the beautiful setting of the historic parade grounds of Bergenhus Fortress. The part of Anne is taken by the Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg, who is highly acclaimed for her interpretations of major operatic roles. Moving performances Modern dance has many facets. Ex perience some of them at the Bergen International Festival: ranging from three performances by the company of the legendary American choreogra pher Paul Taylor, to Hallgrim Hanse gård’s futuristic solo performance, which mixes traditional Norwegian dance with video art and music made from ice. And from Carte Blanche – the Norwegian national company of contempary dance – which presents two world premieres on the subject of the dark recesses of the human soul to Jo Strømgren Kompani’s The Experiment – an absurd yet historical and political story balancing on JSK’s trademark borderline between dance and theatre.

circus acts that take your breath away. Surreal comedy. Gripping stories. Circus Cirkör from Sweden is known for combining impressive circus skills with playfulness, humour and warmth. The Stage called the performance Inside Out ‘a perfect mixture of modern and traditional circus … The result knocks you over’. Inside Out is about daring beyond your limits. Artists balance on knives and defy gravity as they tell the story of two people whose world is turned upside down when they encounter the magic personalities of the circus company. With catchy live music and Circus Cirkör’s own brand of energy and comedy, the performance celebrates the circus’s refreshing view of life. 18

LES MUSICIENS DU LOUVRE-GRENOBLE | MARC MINKOWSKI conductor JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685–1750): No. 1 in F major, BWV 1046 | No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047 | No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048 | No. 4 in G major, BWV 1049 | No. 5 in D major, BWV 1050 | No. 6 in B flat major, BWV 1051

the six brandenburg concertos, named after the margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, are among the composer’s best loved and most performed works. Bach reworked the orchestration for each concert, allowing different instruments to take the principal role. They are considered to be some of the finest compositions of the Baroque era.

Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble are, according to The Guardian, ‘quite simply, one of the greatest orchestras in the world’. The orchestra use original instruments, and are attributed much of the credit for the popularity of baroque music in France. The legendary Marc Minkowski, the orchestra’s artistic director, is in great demand to conduct other major orchestras. Supported by Ambassade de France en Norvège. bergen international festival 2010

11.00–17.00

Conference in connection with the instrument exhibition Friday 4 June–Sunday 6 June

10.00–13.00 in the exhibition showroom (free admission)

Now is your chance to see and hear some of the world’s most famous and expensive violins. We celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ole Bull’s birth by presenting a comprehensive instrument exhibition and a number of concerts. The Norwegian violin virtuoso of the 19th century was a dedicated instrument collector, and owned several rare violins. His favourite was a del Gesù from 1744, which will travel all the way from its current home in Taiwan to be on display during the Bergen International Festival. A selection of instruments from the Dextra Musica collection will be displayed and played in concerts. This includes instruments by masters such as Stradivari, Guadagnini, Rugieri and Gasparo da Saló as well as del Gesù. The exhibition also contains new instruments. International violinmakers have been invited to Bergen to give a seminar and take turns in the museum’s own violin workshop. The result will be one violin to be played at Permanenten. The Norwegian photographer Tom Sandberg has been given the task of creating a photo exhibition based on these rare instruments. The exhibition is produced by Dextra Musica, Sparebankstiftelsen DnB NOR in cooperation with The West Norway Museum of Decorative Art and the Bergen International Festival. The project is part of Ole Bull 2010. See also the Ole Bull Gala Concert on page 11.

the festival outdoors is what we call everything that happens in the streets and city squares, in the air above and the water below. It includes extreme acrobatics, major performances, sudden stunts, casual wear and low thresholds. Great artistic experiences and plenty of good music for the whole family.

Welcome to a series of informal free concerts with students and teachers from the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen. The sound of all sorts of instruments fills the Grieghallen foyer during this concert series, and this year there will also be organ concerts in St John’s Church.
