W

hen the word ACNE comes to mind most experience nightmarish flashbacks to the pimple-ridden face of their teens, but for lovers of fashion and art— like Acne Studios’ creative director and head designer Johnny Johansson—those four letters stand for much more. Ambition to Create Novel Expression, to be exact.

A creative collective established in 1996 by the Swedish born designer, the incorporation of fashion into what was initially a furniture-based business developed in 1997 when Johansson made 100 pairs of raw denim jeans and gave them away his friends. After this gesture, word of the brand spread and ultimately lead to its success as the major fashion and design brand it is today. Although known mostly for their fashion subset (specifically, their denim), the Acne collective is a manifestation of Johansson’s aspiration to combine fashion, music, art, and advertising. With a family group consisting of Acne Advertising, Acne Film, Acne Digital, Acne Art Department, toy line Acne Jr, biannual magazine, Acne Paper and, of course, the fashion brand known simply as Acne; the collective has, not surprisingly, been compared to Johansson’s idol Andy Warhol’s factory.

Along with the foundation of designs from Johansson’s creative mind, Acne holds pride in its eclectic, detailed, custom approach to designing and developing its collections. Setting out with the goal to create an “all-including lifestyle brand,” Acne Studios has succeeded at creating clothing, accessories, and footwear for both men and women. With versatile pieces that are simple-but-functional, Acne has something for everyone, which holds true to their philosophy of creating a “framework for individuality.” With its various collections that have been described as fairly generic (based on their classic denim jean and work-style influences), the brand allows consumers flexibility in assembling the pieces with those in their existing wardrobe. This flexibility has given the brand mass appeal.

Appealing to the masses, without a doubt, means brand expansion. Unlike its contemporaries, however, Acne has not reached these masses through standard fashion campaigns or media outlets. Yes, one may see a rare Acne advertisement here or there, but Johansson and his brand have unconventionally chosen to market themselves primarily through Acne Paper--A publication Johansson describes as a way to, “…express [their] world…” Each issue, based on individual themes, contains contributions from prominent figures in the worlds of fashion, art, design, and culture such as Carine Roitfeld, Mario Testino, and Tilda Swinton. Joining forces with contrasting fashion brands has also served the brand well. Following a lucrative collaboration with high-end fashion house Lanvin in 2008, Acne gained an abundance of attention in the fashion world.

The denim-based capsule collection likewise legitimized the already-progressing brand in the eyes of the high fashion community. With a total of 39 mono-brand stores—called “Acne Studios”—in 13 countries (the most recent and largest opening this past December in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles), there is no doubt that Acne has become what some have called “the leading fashion force for the next generation”.

isaac_sterling Equipped with the ability to conquer any photographic task put before him, Isaac Sterling had the honor of shooting Mrs. Tamar Braxton, and from looking at the photos we can all agree that he truly knocked it out of the park making Mrs. Braxton look the best we’ve ever seen her before. His easy going and professional demeanor were just cherries atop of some of my favorite images within this issue.

cantrell_mitchell Yes, I have already put in my order for my Halloween wig – and you’ll just have to wait and see. Mitchel, a true hair and wig connoisseur and a true needle in a haystack is quickly on the rise as one of LA’s go to hairstylist for the edgy and daring, and even the sexy and demure. Mitchel’s arsenal of references and willingness to take risks will truly take him far.

-/contributor$/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, the accent may have helped his cause but Turnbull’s infectious energy and striking in-camera features definitely didn’t hurt. Turnbull, fresh from the land down under has already attained quite a collection of achievements and Kode being just another stop on his road to fashion domination – can you say #ReturnOfTheMaleSupermodel.

Known as a controversial figure to some, a politician and activist to others, and “the father of the nation” to his country, Nelson Mandela was no doubt a revolutionary. Born in South Africa to a royal family during the beginning of the 20th century, Mandela became interested in and chose to study law as a young man. While living in Johannesburg, South Africa where he had earlier moved to study at the University of Witwatersrand he became deeply involved in politics. Shortly after becoming a part of the African National Congress (ANC), Mandela—influenced by Marxism with a dream to end apartheid, poverty, and inequality—not only joined, but also sat on the central committee of the South African Communist Party. Despite the fact that his ideal method of bringing about this change was through peace, a young Mandela soon co-founded a militant extension of the ANC called Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which translates to “Spear of the Nation.” Through MK, Mandela led a campaign against apartheid in the South African government. The campaign, brought about through guerrilla forces, was shortlived, though, and Mandela was arrested in 1962. The lawyer and freedom fighter was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of “conspiracy to overthrow the state.” While serving his sentence, campaigns developed around the world lobbying for his release. The campaigns were successful, as Mandela was released in 1990 after serving 27 years behind bars.

A man with a strong conviction to change the world into a better place, Mandela continued as if he had never been imprisoned not only as an activist, but also as a politician and earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Following the uniting of forces with the President at the time to abolish apartheid in the South Africa and institute multiracial elections, Mandela won the election of 1994 and became the first president democratically elected in the country.Propagating a new constitution, Mandela ended apartheid in South Africa indefinitely. Staying true to his main focus, Mandela, also during his presidency, created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a commission which investigates previous cases involving the abuse of human rights. Bringing about even more change with his administration, proceedings were set to reform the land, expand healthcare, and battle poverty.

While his country and people were a main concern, a true love for all humans prompted Mandela to also perform philanthropic and activist work internationally. Subsequent to the conclusion of Mandela’s term in June of 1999, the Nelson Mandela Foundation was established. As an elder political figure, Mandela, through his foundation, centered his attention on charitable work. This work included and includes to this day: building schools for children, aiding in fighting against HIV-AIDS, and peace interventions, to name a few.

For a man like Mandela, the work of making a difference for the better was never done. An active philanthropist and activist until his recent death due to ill health in December of 2013 at his home in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela, having received more then 200 honors throughout his life, is celebrated worldwide as a man who made a difference as the voice for all people.

Twenty-two year old Australian model Andrej Pejic has branded himself based on his androgynous looks and risen to the top of fashion. Although Pejic’s preference is to be referred to as “she” the openly gay model admits that she lives “in between genders” a truth that has done wonders for her career.

Currently rumored to be dating actress Michelle Rodriguez, supermodel Cara Delvigne is an indisputable free spirit and badass.

Leading the modeling world in all aspects the 21 year old English bombshell was named “Model of the Year” at the 2012 British Fashion Awards, a title that she rightly deserves. Caught partying by paparazzi on a regular basis we can’t help but love the bushy-browed beauty.

Born in Paris and of French and African descent Ines Rau is a racially ambiguous beauty. One of the top transgender models currently the 24 year old underwent the transformation at the very young age of 16. Comfortable in her own skin this beautiful groundbreaker has worked with esteemed people in the business such as photographer Ellen von Unwerth and model Tyson Beckford.

Known widely for her relationship with Angelina Jolie, model Jenny Shimizu was discovered while working as a mechanic in California. A rebel in her own right, the leather jacket-wearing beauty, who hails from the bay area of the sunshine state, has appeared in campaigns for Calvin Klein and Banana Republic. Voted “sexiest woman” in 2005 it is undeniable that her badass look and persona contribute to her sexy.

The beautiful Joan Smalls, has since her emergence into the modeling world represented women of color gracefully. Born in Puerto Rico to a multicultural family, the 5’10 bombshell gained a degree in Psychology before moving to New York to pursue a modeling career. Arguably the top model of color today, Smalls has appeared in campaigns and walked the runway for Roberto Cavalli, Chanel and Fendi, to name a few.

An advocate for the transgender community model, Lea T, born Leandro Cerezo was discovered by head designer of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci in 2010. Later becoming the face of the brand during that same year, T has been rated as one of the top models in the world. Having underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2012 the model has thrived even further in her career.

Frequently bullied by his peers while growing up Albino, model Shaun Ross no doubt has gotten the last laugh. Discovered on Youtube at the age of 16, the now 22 year old fashion model has crossed over barriers, challenging beauties standards. The first Albino male model, Ross has been featured in various top magazines and modeled for top fashion brands such as Givenchy.

Born Linnethia Monique Johnson and originally from Queens, New York, this former-stripper-turned-”Housewife Queen” stole the show when she made her first appearance on The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2008. Known for her audacious actions, brash tongue, and boisterous personality; she has participated in countless hostile altercations with fellow cast members through the seasons. Leakes has not only made a name for herself on the show but has taken on additional ventures, such as co-writing the book “Never Make the Same Mistake Twice: Lessons on Love and Life Learned the Hard Way” and landing a reccurring role on the now scrapped NBC sitcom “The New Normal”.

ABBEY LEE MILLER> (Dance_Moms)

Owner and chief choreographer of the Abbey Lee Dance Company, Abbey Lee Miller—the leading force behind Lifetime’s reality hit Dance Moms—is known more for her harsh and blunt criticisms of the young girls enrolled in her dance school and her extreme confrontations with their overbearing stage mothers than she is for her choreography. Miller, who is currently involved in a trial with the mother of a former dancer at her studio, has—in only two seasons— sparked controversy by commenting on the weight of a young dancer and choosing what some would call inappropriate costumes for her dancers. Regardless of the criticism, Miller is unapologetic and viewers love her.

This millionaire “Duck Commander” reality star took TV’s all over America by storm when he and his duck-hunting southern family, along with A&E, introduced us to the reality series Duck Dynasty. The main character in one of the most-watched cable series in history, Robertson and his devout-Christian ways got him into trouble with not only the network, but with watchers of the show after defaming homosexuals in an interview with GQ. The part-time preacher, hunter, and businessman proved himself a rebel for filter he’s obviously lacking.

A rebel in a different way then the others, Kendall Jenner is a rebel we love—a reality television fashion rebel. As the newly-legal second youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner Clan, Kendall has come a long way from the 11-year-old introduced to us on the first season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians in the fall of 2007. After more than eight seasons of being constantly filmed with her family, the young model is now making waves seperately from them.

Most notably, she walked the runway for Marc Jacobs during New York Fashion Week and Givenchy during Paris Fashion Week as well as sat front row at London Fashion week with Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, for which she later did some modelling.

Restaurateur and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has also made a career of entertaining viewers and scaring the hell out of contestants as the host of various cooking-competition reality shows. Known widely for his shows Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay now serves as a judge on Fox’s Master Chef and Master Chef Junior. Known for being a badass in the kitchen, habitual screamer, and all-around tough ass; the world-renowned Chef is a force to be reckoned with in the world of reality television.

We first met the sixteen-year-old pregnant high school cheerleader Farrah Abraham in 2009 when she shared her somber story with the world on MTV’s controversial reality-drama series 16 and Pregnant.

Following 16 and Pregnant, Abraham joined the cast of the network’s spinoff reality series Teen Mom, offering a deeper look into the lives of new teen mothers. Abraham became widely known due to the show. Her fame spread, however, in May of last year when the now22-year-old released a sex tape through top porn producer Vivid Entertainment alongside (and underneath) porn star James Deen.

When confronted about the explicit video, the ex-teen mom (16_and_Pregnant_&_Teen_Mom) claimed she did it not only for the paycheck, but also to “celebrate [her] awesome body.”

Now, as cast member on the new season of VH1’s show Couples Therapy, it’s become even more apparent that Farrah is the same rebellious girl she was in her teens.

This fish-lipped, big-breasted East Coast native and relative to the Genovese crime family with a gruff voice and appealing personality can be seen on the Mafia-connected reality series Mob Wives.

As somewhat of a newbie to the show, Ang has gained so much media attention that she is now the star of her own spinoff show Miami Monkey on VH1, based on the bar she owns in South Beach.

Premiering on the Oxygen network in the winter of 2006, it was apparent from the first episode that this outlandish show was reality television at its worst—or should we say finest? Set in rented mansions around the country, the show revolves around seven girls per season. Women of varying backgrounds fight each other during the day, get wasted together at night, and fight each other again before the night is over just to fall asleep and wake up in the morning (with a hangover) to do it all again. With numerous controversies throughout the past 12 seasons, the entire cast of this crazy show deserves the title of Reality Show Rebels.

TERESA & JOE GIUDICE> (The_Real_Housewives_of_New_Jersey)

Teresa is the second-highest paid cast member of The Real Housewives franchise thanks to her standout role on the New Jersey series. Therefore, it might come as a surprise to many that the Jersey native and her husband, Joe, have not only filed for bankruptcy since signing onto the show, but are currently facing federal charges of bank, wire, and mail fraud along with conspiracy and failure to file tax returns for specified years. The couple is facing more than 50 years in prison and over $500,000 in fines if convicted. These two reserve the right to be Rebels!
