Kode | Congrats on your major success with Unfriended, how was it working on a horror/suspense film? Will | It was an amazing experience doing this film, but it was different from most other horror/ suspense films (and films in general) because it was all through the eyes of a computer screen. We filmed in our own individual rooms in a big house as if we weren’t in the same place. And we only interacted with each other through Skype. Kode | You also worked on a new film with our #Kode5 cover star Victoria Justice, How was it working with her? Isn’t she amazing? Will | The film is Revenge of the Nerds meets Mean Girls and you wouldn’t know it from looking at her, but she actually plays the nerdy girl. She is such a professional and one of the nicest people I’ve met. The whole cast was made up of a great group of young actors and we all had fun going back to high school together. Kode | Can you tell us more about your character in your new film The Outskirts? Will | My character Colin is a jock and in the “popular” group. He spends a lot time with the meanest of the mean girls and even though he’s her boyfriend, just like everyone else, he’s absolutely terrified of her. Kode | How do you describe your personal style? Will | Always changing and evolving, but always featuring a lot of black. Kode | Your career is just at it’s starting point, but what direction do you see your career going? Do you see yourself being a young Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp? Will | I have done drama, comedy, and horror, which has allowed me to work with some amazing directors including Jason Reitman. It sounds simple, but it was an important lesson.. He taught me to take my time. I don’t know that I see a particular direction, I feel so lucky to have the opportunities that I do and just hope to continue to learn as I work. Kode | #WetHot Do you kiss on the first date? Will | Never say never.

DISNEY’S NEWEST BREAKOUT

Kelli Berglund Photos By | Bradford Rogne Fashion Ediotr + Art Director | AllanTroy of The Kurators Retouching | Felipe Menezes Hair | Cesar Ramirez Make up | Bradford Rogne

KODE 6 | 21

Kode | What’s something a lot of people wouldn’t know about you? Kelli | Most people wouldn’t know that I really consider myself an introvert. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely one to be outgoing depending on the situation, but I keep most things close to me. Maybe I have some barriers up due to what I’ve learned throughout my years of being a teenager.. But I’ve always felt more comfortable being alone and independent. I guess I’m sort of protective over myself. Kode | How has it been being a child star in the industry? Any moments of doubt? Kelli | Quite the experience. There’s definitely a difference between being a child star on Disney Channel and being a child star on a network show/film/anything non-Disney. I was a pretty normal girl before I booked Lab Rats. I still consider myself pretty normal, so in that sense, I feel I haven’t changed much. The way I carry myself (on all levels) has changed drastically... and it could be, because I was thrown into an adult world at 14-years-old. I grew up and matured a lot quicker than many of my friends, but now I’m more prepared than ever to take on the rest of the real world. I’ll admit I doubted myself at the beginning. But then again, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, nor was I totally prepared for it at the time. Kode | Any favorite celebrity moments that made you speechless? Kelli | Right now I’m obsessed with Ruby Rose from Orange Is the New Black and I recently saw the Youtube video that she made called ‘Break Free,’ it is truly incredible! Kode | If you could attend any summer festival, which one would it be & What would be your dream line up! Kelli | Although it’s at the very end of the summer, I’d kill to go to Made In America. Dream Lineup? The 1975, Rihanna, Haim, and Drake are a few of my faves. Kode | We know you’ve always had a passion for dancing, what made you jump into acting as a career? Kelli | Acting came as a total surprise to me. Not that I wasn’t interested, but I didn’t plan on it happening when it did. My acting career started through my dancing, actually. A talent scout was at a dance performance of mine, and she recommended me to an agent in LA. It was sort of a “why the heck not!” type of situation, so I told my parents I wanted to try it. I had a love for putting on a show for an audience and it always came naturally. So when I booked a few commercials here and there, I knew I wanted to keep going. Kode | What have you learned about yourself from working on Lab Rats? Kelli | I’ve learned so, so much about myself-- not just how to become a better actress. I’ve learned that preparation will get you really far and people genuinely appreciate it a lot more than you think. I’ve gained confidence and self-assurance, and the boys have always been ones I can talk to about anything. I think most importantly, I’ve been surrounded by people who have kept me grounded, and I feel pretty lucky to say that. Kode | Any other projects that you’re currently working on?

22 | KODE 6

^ “Why

the heck not
” Kelli | Yes, a few actually! I’m planning on flying overseas for a film (wish I could give more details, but it’s currently a bit of a secret!). I also have another really exciting and unexpected project coming hopefully by the end of the year. But again, secrets, secrets, secrets. Don’t you just love show business? Kode | Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Kelli | On the big screen, for sure. I’m not even going to say ‘hopefully’ because that’s not what the law of attraction is about! If you keep telling yourself something is going to happen no matter what, there’s a pretty great chance it’ll happen (along with some hard work of course.) Acting is something I plan on doing for the rest of my life. I also want dance to remain in my life as well. Kode | Is there any advice you would give your younger self or any of our readers that are thinking about getting into the industry? Kelli | I don’t think I’d give my younger self any advice because I needed to learn certain lessons at that time that brought me to where I am now. Things work out exactly the way they’re supposed to, good or bad. I can give some advice to others, though. Always work hard to the point where you think you’re over-prepared. If you have a passion for something, you need to express that wholly and completely. Never let anyone tell you you can’t do something, because I can guarantee you can. It’s a tough business, but it can be so good to you if you know what to do. Kode | Time for a fun question! #WetHot, what’s your favorite guilty pleasure? Kelli | That would most definitely be binge-watching Orange Is the New Black. I’m so typical for saying that, but it’s a fantastic show. And so many men underestimate it! By | Ryan Mitchell

Kode | Has singing always been your passion because you’ve had an amazing acting career? Max | Well thank you. Yeah singing has definitely always been my passion. I’ve been really fortunate to play awesome parts on the acting side and that’s something I’d like to always continue to do but I feel like being on stage is my second home and where I feel the most alive. Kode | You’re also currently on tour with Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa, how has that experience been? Max | It’s been really incredible. I’ve been fans of everybody on this lineup for so long, so to actually be sharing the stage with them every night is pretty surreal and really an honor. The shows have been amazing. Kode | Let’s have a quick throwback, how was it working with one of our favorites, KeKe Palmer? Max | Oh Keke is the bomb. One of the most real and wonderful humans you’ll ever meet. She just radiates this beautiful and joyous energy. She makes everybody she meets feel like they’ve known her for years and she’s such a giving actress and singer. So it’s always such a pleasure working with her. Kode | How has it felt having such an amazing fan base Max | I’m really lucky. My people are amazing. They’ve done so much for me and I appreciate their nonstop support so much. Kode | Do you have any other projects we could look forward to? Max | I’m finishing up my album which will hopefully be out late fall. Been really blessed to work with incredible artists and producers like Pharrell Williams, Travie Mccoy, Hoodie Allen and so many more. Kode | #WetHot any crazy fan experiences since you been on tour? Max | I’d say one of the craziest thus far was falling into the crowd at our Boston show. I fell full on off the stage into the audience and they were very gracious and cheered me on when I jumped back on stage to finish off my single Gibberish.

Kode | You are really making your mark in this industry as a new artist, do you feel any pressure? Kyndall | Oh, I definitely feel the pressure all around.. but I can’t say I’m bothered by it. I try to stay focused on my art & keep my eye on the prize, otherwise the pressure would eat me alive. Kode | Name three of your musical inspirations? Kyndall | Janet, Jhene, & Kanye. Kode | Your personal style is amazing, how do you pick your #ootd? Kyndall | Thank you! I like looking my best at all times. Usually, I’m either in the studio all night and running a million errands during the day, so I like to piece together an outfit that will keep me fleek from day to night without having to race home & change before my next meeting. Sometimes that means packing an extra pair of heels & a jacket or earrings to spice things up when the sun goes down. Kode | What’s next for Kyndall, hopefully an album soon because we loved your EP! Kyndall | I’m working on a new body of work as we speak! Stay tuned Kode | Any producers or artist you really want to work with? Kyndall | “Belly”, & also “Travis Scott.” I like working with individuals. Kode | #WetHot if you were stranded on an island with any celebrity, who would it be? Kyndall | Prince Harry.

Hot In Here Theme

How-To Throw the Sexiest Pool Party of the Summer

Although not entirely necessary you may be inclined to choose a theme for your party. Themes can not only set the tone for your gathering but also allow your guests to be actively involved in the shindig. Suggested themes include anything from “Playboy Mansion Party,” “Old Hollywood,” “Crazy College,” or your typical overrated but still fun, “Hawaiian.” Either way if you choose a theme have fun with it and be sure to emphasize your chosen theme to your invitees prior to the party’s date.

Invites

No doubt, the first and most crucial step in throwing a successful party is mastering the invite strategies. Begin by assessing a suitable maximum capacity – too few people and the party could be a dud, too many and on top of a quick depletion of food and drinks noise could be an issue and nothing puts a damper on a get-together more then an uncurated room full of complimentary company. Once the guest list is in order decide exactly how you will be inviting your guests and execute accordingly. Whether its is a Facebook Event, a “Flyer” you’ve posted on your Instagram, a personal DM to each individual guest, a mailed invite or just a simple call or text it is imperative invites are sent and/or posted a week in advance, at the very least, to insure your guests can clear their schedules and attend.

Aesthetics and Amenities

Regardless of your chosen theme, behind every entertaining pool party is a killer vibe. For starters ensure that your pool and pool area are exceptionally clean. Designate a bathroom for your guests; making sure it is fully stocked with tissue, towels, as well as soap, shampoo and conditioner if they choose to shower. Set the poolside vibe with innovative lighting such as string lights, torches and or fire pits for when the sun goes down. Providing enjoyable amenities for your guests such as floatation devices, games and even hammocks for lounging, keep the party vibrant. Every successful party needs music. Therefore an impressive music selection is vital. And with a perfect summer playlist you’ll be sure to keep your guests dancing all day and night. Make sure the playist contains enough of variety to last hours without a song repeat. If you don’t have one already consider investing in a portable speaker so you and your guests can listen in cordless style.

Food and Drinks

In order to keep your party going into the night making sure your guests are fed and hydrated – and/or tipsy – is an essential aspect in throwing the perfect pool party. Get creative with your food and drinks, either going along with your theme or whipping up that recipe you saw online and have been meaning to try. Offer food that can go for some time without being refrigerated as well as cocktails along with virgin selections for guests who don’t drink alcohol or may be underage. Follow our guide, adding your own flair here and there and we ensure your pool party will be the sexiest of the summer! Now get to it, you have a theme to brainstorm and invites to send. See you at the poolside!

By | Mi’chele Daniels 48 | KODE 6

Thoughts of Summer bring to mind long days, basking on beaches, warm weather, cold drinks, late lunches, short shorts and of course pool parties. Instead of waiting by your phone this summer for that “You’re Invited” email, text, or DM, throw the pool party of the summer yourself! KODE presents you with a guide to throw the sexiest poolside soirée of the summer.

Poolside Read ;)

Reading is what... Fundamental.

By | Alyx Cohen

Quit all those social media apps, put on some sunscreen, and grab a lounge chair- it’s time to read something that can stimulate the senses while you soak up the sun.

MODERN ROMANCE, AZIZ ANSARI We all crave summer romances, and who better to teach us about the love game than comedian Aziz Ansari? Well, he teamed up with a sociologist to design and conduct a research project in order to help us better understand dating as it’s played today.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, PAULA HAWKINS Part thriller, part mystery, definite page turner, this book follows around a rock bottom alcoholic who gets mixed up in a missing persons case. With all of the plot twists and surprises, there is nothing better to keep you busy beachside.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, PAULA HAWKINS A sequel to the American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, the book will be released this summer and is a must read. About the turbulent events that transform the mid-1950s in America, it will cast a new fascinating light on the enduring classic.

#KodeTrip

One of the hottest places to be this summer, figuratively and literally, is Dubai. With too many skyscrapers to count and more being erected, this modern utopia of architecture, style, and decadence has a decidedly different disposition than its brothers and sisters with in the UAE. While many western news outlets depict the Middle East with a negative and sometimes savage filter, this pristine city is truly a haven for expression, art and tolerance. A week in Dubai is like a deliciously decadent daydream; time seems to stand still as you are shuttled between five star hotels, extravagant nightclubs and the best restaurants in the world. Furthermore during the day there are plenty of beaches, pools and yachts to escape the sweltering heat. WHERE TO STAY: Media One Hotel One of the hottest places to be this summer, figuratively and literally, is Dubai.

WHAT TO DO:

Desert Safari Experience No trip to the Middle East would be complete without a camel ride in the desert. Available from myriad tour companies and nearly every hotel concierge, a safari experience is kind of like going to a luau in Hawaii, “authentic,” “cultural,” an excursion that is completely commercialized but still worth the experience. Beginning with a dune bashing experience in SUVs, then your 5 minute camel ride awaits, followed by more dune bashing in ATVs for an additional cost. Capped off with a buffet dinner and show under the stars in the desert. Sky Dive Dubai One of the most memorable and thrilling activities in Dubai is Sky Dive Duabi. Done the exact same way as sky diving all over, but with a breathtaking view of the entire Duabi skyline and beaches. Be sure to book ahead as reservations can fill up, up to a month in advance. Yacht Duabi has the largest manmade small boat marina in the world. This means there are tons of boats for your enjoyment, wh¬ether it is fishing, jet skiing or partying on a yacht with your friends. This is another activity to book ahead of time. Yacht-charter.ae offers great luxury yacht rentals and sells packages that come complete with crew and food, however you need to supply your own alcohol.

WHERE TO SHOP:

50 | KODE 6

Malls Duabi is arguably the ultimate destination for excess and luxury. An argument supported in no small part by the lavish malls. The main two malls being the Dubai Mall located at the base of the tallest building in the world with fountains that make Bellagio look like your neighbors sprinklers. The other being the Mall of the Emirates which features indoor skiing slopes. While both have a lot of the same major stores it is still necessary to visit and shop in both. Also, both malls are open past midnight, perfect for a post dinner shopping spree.

: Dubai

Souks As modern Dubai grows ever larger and taller, in the shadow of the growing city is the old Dubai. This is a must see for a cultural experience and a sense of life in Dubai before, black gold. Located in the old city are the souks where you can haggle with vendors for spices, clothes, gold, diamonds and some of the best knock off bags in the world. Don’t be afraid to drive a hard bargain or even walk out, they will follow you with lower prices.

WHERE TO EAT:

Atmosphere Atmosphere is located in the Burj Khalifa and is one of the highest restaurants in the world. There are several options for visiting the restaurant and taking in the views from above the clouds, however I recommend making a reservation for tea. A four-course lunch is served with champagne before a complete tea service. This will definitely be a classy, pinky in the air moment and one you won’t soon forget. Al Mahara Situated in one of the most extravagant hotels in the world, the Burj Al Arab, the Al Mahara restaurant follows in suit. A tunneled entrance leads to a massive floor to ceiling aquarium in the middle of the dinning room that gives the illusion of dining under water. The service is unparalleled and the seven course-tasting menu is an edible adventure. Do not miss out on a chance to eat at this seven star restaurant, yes, SEVEN star.

WHERE TO PARTY:

Barasti Beach Club Also in Media City, located a short walk from the Media One Hotel is the Barasti Beach Club. Open everyday and weekend nights, this is a great place to play in the sun and under the stars. Located in a man made harbor, there are no waves making this the ideal beach for floating next to million dollar yachts. Armani Privé Located in the Armani Hotel at the Burj Khalifa, Armani Privé is one of the most exclusive places to party. Come prepared with a good buzz and thick skin, the drinks are expensive and the staff is arrogant. If ‘see and be seen’ scenes are your thing, this is your spot.

TIPS:

Look around the Internet for deals before booking activities through hotels; the UAE Groupon has a lot of great deals that you can book from other countries. STOCK UP ON ALCOHOL. It is still almost impossible for tourists to purchase alcohol at liquor stores in Dubai, bringing an extra roller suitcase to fill up at the Duty Free does not make you an alcoholic. The metro is a great way to get around especially during peak traffic periods and is like everything else in Dubai; modern, new, amazing. In the UAE the weekend is Thursday to Saturday.

Kode | Our readers may not know but please tell us how you got your start? Sevyn | I started singing in church. That led to talent shows, the talent shows lead to “Showtime At The Apollo” at age 10. From that point on, I knew exactly what I wanted to do!! Kode | Do you have any regrets? Sevyn | Absolutely NOT! God makes no mistakes & I’ve forgiven myself for any that I’ve made! Kode | You also do a lot of work with singer Chris Brown, who we’ve worked with before during our AnnexMan times, How did that relationship start? I didn’t want to live denial and act like they didn’t exist. Fortunately, I’m no longer in that space and relationship but someone else may be and these songs may just the therapy they need. Kode |Alot of people may not know this but you are Australian! Would you say there was a huge culture shock when you first came to the states? Keiynan | My first ever experience in America was Vegas, so, yeah definitely a culture shock haha. Australia & the US are similar in a lot of ways, but there are some important differences - mainly the lack of Tim Tam chocolates.

Keiynan | Not at all. I was actually way to shy to sing for a long time. Dancing was my first passion. I just wanted to be on the big stage with MJ. When I was about 14 years old I started writing songs (really bad ones,) but I loved music so much that I had to keep trying and creating. Now I’m really proud of the music I’m making. Kode | What would your dream role be?

Kode | Congrats on Insurgent, literally an amazing movie! Are we going to see more of your character in the upcoming films?

Keiynan | I have an equal desire to play a villain or superhero in an action movie. So maybe a character that struggles with both sides? That would be fun.

Keiynan | Thank you! And yes, you’ll definitely be seeing more of Uriah. I’ve been filming the next installment of the series in Atlanta, which is called Allegiant. I think fans will really dig this one!

Kode | Name one thing most people don’t know about you?

Kode | You also sing. Has music always been your first passion?

Keiynan | I have a total of 11 brothers and sisters, and we all look really different. I love them. Kode | #WetHot, Are you single and ready to mingle? Keiynan | Haha! I’m happy (big smile.)

Kode | You are seriously on the path of being Pop’s new princess, has singing always been a passion of yours? Katy | I’ve always had a love for entertaining! When I was a kid I was always trying to make people laugh, thinking I was funny but I’m pretty sure I was just annoying. I knew I loved singing, but wasn’t very confident and didn’t sing in public outside my bedroom until I was 18 years old. Kode | A lot of people might not know this but you’re originally from the UK, Was it hard transitioning here in the states? Katy | It was definitely a shock and hard being so far from my friends and family. The time difference makes it much harder. My accent hasn’t changed a bit and I like sounding like Harry Potter’s sister. I’ve always dreamt of having success in the states…sooo... TADAAAAA I moved here! Kode | You’ve also had so many summer hit songs, can we expect an album from you soon? Katy | Yes you can!!! I’ve known the name I wanted for my first album ever since I started singing. I seriously cannot wait to tell the world, I am so proud of it, but I’m not telling yet! And don’t try and bribe me with cupcakes because I don’t have the strength to turn them down... Kode | Have you had any experiences that made you completely speechless? Katy | When I meet fans it really hits me. It blows my mind when I hear their experience with my music. That’s why I do this!! I bloody love it! Kode | What’s next for Katy? Katy | WORLD DOMINATION *thunder sound effects* Ok... Maybe not quite yet... I am finishing my summer tour and putting the finishing touches on my next single. I am in the middle of planning the video at the moment, so my bag is full of pieces of paper with ideas. Kode | #WetHot what’s something on your Bucket list that you have to accomplish? Katy | Performing on the iHeart Festival stage in Vegas and having my crazy family there. It was the first show I went to in America and iHeartRadio is very special to me.

Kode Tips + Tricks

#TSA life

By | Andrew Boston

TSA PRE CHECK

We all see the lines when going to the airport, or lack there of. The magical lane where you can keep your shoes and belt on and fly through security as everyone appears to be stuck in a line fit for an amusement park with no option for a fast pass. Next time be one of the chosen and plan ahead. You can become pre checked by filling out the appropriate paper, going through the application process (which includes being finger printed), and paying a non-refundable $85. (http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheckR-application-program)

GLOBAL ENTRY

Are you a millennial jetsetter travelling the world in coach grabbing the cheapest ticket you can with no loyalty or elite status to elevate you above the fray when travelling? Global entry is a cheap way to help make travelling easier. Similar to the TSA Pre Check process you pay a $100 processing fee and Global Entry includes TSA Pre Check. Next time you enter customs you’ll be able to zip through in the assigned and often times empty line and reach immigration before the rest of the crowd. (http://www.cbp.gov/global-entry/how-to-apply)

LOYALTY

Loyalty to an airline for frequent travellers equates to one thing, elite status. This comes with various benefits depending on how often you fly and sometimes how much you spend. However many loyalty programs include priority access and boarding on the lowest level of elite status. This often times can mean that you can check your bag and into your flight in the business or first class line and go through the same security line.

CHARGE IT

Every airline by this point has a credit card to earn miles towards its loyalty program. The more exclusive gold and platinum editions of these cards often come with many perks. That elite status comes with giving non-frequent travellers the opportunity to access the same privileges. Also many of the platinum cards offered by airlines feature extra perks such as lounge memberships. These cards can feature steep annual fees but with lounge memberships, free checked bags, and waived global entry fees they more than make up for it even for the occasional traveller. And waiting in a soothing lounge getting a massage and pedicure while sipping on champagne sure beats fighting over outlets with the college baseball team at gate 47A.

The Land Down Under , Imerges Stateside Behind the Australian Fashion Invasion By | Eveline Morel Take any one of the top five online stores, and you will find at least three Australian brands in their Designer list. From the smallest shoe-box boutique to a big-box giant, nearly all U.S. fashion retailers seem to carry at least one Australian label these days. A low Australian dollar and a U.S. market receptive to Australian imports of all kinds --from Shiraz to “Crocodile Dundee” -- have definitely paved the way for this recent fashion influx that brings more than 30 new Aussie fashion brands to the U.S. each year. From low-priced, fast-fashion Mink Pink, to high-end designers like Sass & Bide, and everything in-between, these brands are coming in at all price levels. Pioneering Australian designers to hit the U.S. market during the last decade was the fashion elite group of designers, led by Sass & Bide, Camilla and Marc, Alex Perry, Josh Groot, Lisa Ho, Dion Lee as well as a few lower-priced brands that preceded the digital revolution and fast-fashion: Mink Pink, Goddess of Babylon, and a few other lesser-known ones. The second wave of Aussie fashion labels, arriving with the growth of digital and U.S. market recovery, was headed by a new, lower-priced group of contemporary brands, including Bless’d are the Meek, Talulah, Zimmerman, Zhivago, Elle Zeitoune, and the Australian Fashion Labels (Cameo, Finders Keepers, Keepsake). The Australian Fashion Labels’ combination of ontrend styling, great quality, trans-seasonal approach, and affordable prices made fast inroads into the U.S. market, with distribution by many top retailers, and most recently, opening BNKR, their first flagship store, in downtown Los Angeles. We asked a few retailers what drew them to these Australian brands, and the answers invariably turned around the affordability of great designs, and originality. “Australian brands seem to possess this perfect balance of wearable familiarity and just enough creative edge to make them new and different,” said one buyer. Modern Australian fashion has a unique casual style that is easily distinguishable from the more tailored, European design aesthetic.

Designer Alex Perry Collection

What’s more, “all the Australian fashion brands are infused with this ‘Australian flair’ that has become permanently associated with Australia’s image in the U.S: fun, casual, lighthearted, beautiful people, warm climate and a sophisticated yet approachable vibe,” says David Dietch, of Dietch PR, whose work with Australian brands spans both continents. “All the Australian imports, be it wine, Crocodile Dundee, or fashion benefit from this positive image of Australia that’s now well established in the minds of the American consumers.” This casual approach to fashion, greater freedom of expression, and wider range of cultural inspirations that combines Asian, European, and tropical influences have found a very receptive consumer audience in the U.S. market. Along with the language and cultural differences between Australia and the U.S. being much smaller – other global brands from Asia and Europe have to break through much wider cultural and language barriers when entering the U.S. market.

Designer Zimmereman Collection

Australia’s fashion labels have managed to adapt relatively quickly to the changing market conditions and have greatly benefited from the digital evolution with continued top celebrity support. Faced with growing international competition, rising real estate costs, and local manufacturing woes, as a result of the global financial crisis of the last decade, the Australian brands who survived locally, invariably set their sights upon the larger U.S. market. At the same time, “many Australian labels see the U.S. market as the embodiment of the American Dream, and come expecting instant results. But as many soon realize, ‘there’s no rags-to-riches’ story, only a few get lucky. A rapid expansion may not always be sustainable, and some brands will suffer. “The playing field will level off soon, as more brands arrive in the market – they increase the competition for each other,” says Dietch. The influx of brands will invariably continue, and U.S. consumers will always have fresh offerings to choose from, but survival of the fittest will determine which brands last more than a few seasons. In the meantime, it’s great opportunity to go shopping.

Kode | You’ve had an amazing career and you’re just getting started. How does it feel to be Disney’s teen queen?

>

Peyton | Thank you so much. It feels incredibly surreal. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been watching Disney Channel and have always dreamed of doing my own wand ID. If only I had known that they’re actually more difficult than they look! Kode | What got you started into the acting world? Peyton | I started in print from a young age. I had these little Shirley Temple curls and huge personality which then got me into commercials, as I got older I fell into acting. Kode | Where do you see yourself next in your career? Peyton | We have a couple of months off in between seasons of filming Bunk’d, so it would be ideal to do a movie in between then. I see myself balancing my movie and TV career. Kode | What’s your astrological sign, and what does it say about you? Peyton | Funny you asked, because I’m super into astrology. I’m an Aries, so my sign is a ram. We are known for being strong, curious, adventurous, and the life of the party. I look at the app “Daily Horoscope” every day. Kode | How do you manage your personal life with your career? Does it ever get overwhelming?

Peyton | To be honest, there are definitely moments when it does get overwhelming. My friends outside of the business might not always understand how busy I can be when I’m on set, or I’ll have to miss something because I’m filming. However, on Bunk’d, I’ve been becoming especially good friends with Miranda who plays my best friend on screen. It’s nice because we can have sleepovers between filming days and ride into work together. I also have family dinners every night when I get home with my parents and brothers, which I treasure so much. They keep me sane. Kode | Is there a dream role that you would love to have? Peyton | The book “Before I Fall” is one of my favorite books, and I think it would be such an awesome project to be a part of. Kode | What’s your ideal day? Peyton | I would love to wake up early and go to my barre class, get an acai bowl, go to set, snuggle with my dog in between takes, go out to get Mexican food with my friends afterward, and then read a book and go to bed. Kode | Describe your personal style in 3 words Peyton | Chic, confident, and effortless. Kode | #WetHot: If you could choose any other career besides acting, what would it be? Peyton | I love fashion and would love to design my own clothing line one day.

Kode | For anyone who doesn’t know you, How did you get your start in entertainment? Arden | I studied theater in college at the University of Illinois and fell in love with acting working on an independent film. After graduating in 2007 I ended up moving to Los Angeles to continue taking acting classes and started auditioning for pilots. I also worked as a model and wrote and produced music. Kode | Was it a hard transition from being Miss Korea Chicago 2004 to acting? Arden | Not really, I don’t consider myself a pageant girl. It was something I tried and I learned a lot through the experience. But the greatest take away was seeing that any platform can be used for good. It really inspired me to dive into acting and performing and gave me the confidence to give it a shot. Kode | Can you tell us a little bit more about your role on Teen Wolf? Arden | Kira Yukimura is a Thunder Kitsune aka a fox, she’s supernatural but still a normal teenage girl - as normal as you can be in the Teenwolf world. I love playing a strong character, the action sequences are challenging but lots of fun. Kode | Would you consider Teen Wolf to be your break out role? Arden | Yeah I think so. Before TeenWolf it was mostly modeling, music and lots of guest star roles. The role of Kira Yukimura was my first guest recurring and now it’s developed into a series regular so I think it’s fair to say it’s my break out role! Kode | Can you relate to your character Kira or is she completely different from you? Arden | She’s definitely relatable to me. We have a lot in common and I think as the seasons progress I feel like I see even more similarities because the writers get to know us better as well. Kode | You have an amazing body, was it hard for you to prepare for such a physical role? Arden | Thank you! I grew up training in martial arts, taekwondo and gymnastics so that background definitely helps. It’s still tough picking up choreography on the spot and working with swords, fighting berzerkers and werewolves, but I love the challenge.

“It was something I tried and I learned a lot through...”

Kode | We are obsessed with your puppychild Chewy, Were you always a animal lover?

Arden | Yes, I grew up with lots of animals in the house. Animals are great, Chewy gives me so much love and joy!

Kode | What’s next for Arden?

Arden | We’re still filming Season 5 but I’m also going to Asia for some music concerts and continuing to work on my music.

Kode | #WetHot, Out of any of the Teen Wolf characters, are their any on set crushes?

Arden | Oh that’s a tough one, all the characters are too hot!

Kode | What inspires you about music? TOKYO | Movies, fashion, and the lack of originality makes my brain starved. So I feed it myself. SCOTTY | It amazes me how music has the ability to make people feel, express, and have an outlet to put their energy into. I remember seeing my dad play the piano and guitar and me feeling alive for the first time. Now I can’t live without it. Kode | In 3 words describe your personal style? I love all aspects of fashion, from being super girly, to throwing on a pair of sneakers and calling it a day. Being in the fashion business it’s easy to be open with style and have fun with it. That being said, it keeps you on your feet, and once in a blue moon you need time to take for yourself and just relax.

Fashion is my first love. But admittedly, I tend to keep my everyday dressing simple and effortless. What I feel I look best in are jeans and t-shirts. I’m LA born and raised, so I can’t help but have a deep rooted connection with California’s easy breezy and cool style. When it comes to my accessories, I like to have a unique and fun variety of pieces to play with. Plus, I’m so good at convincing myself they’re worth the splurge.

I have finally come to terms with the fact I need glasses. With these crystal frames, I’ve had an easy transition with these crystal frames. They’re cool and it’s like they’re barely there. Plus, when you buy one pair, Warby Parker donates a pair to a child in need, and at $95 a pair, they are more than worthy of purchase.

My friend gave me this delicate FUCK OFF necklace for Christmasdespite its crudeness, I can’t help but wear it everyday. Then at a tequila tasting, I happened to be sitting next to the designer while wearing the necklace, I knew at that point, I was meant to wear that necklace. I feel such a connection to her cheeky collection, they’re great conversation starters.

I am quite short, so finding jeans that fit me correctly or don’t have to be tailored are like a godsend for me! Thankfully, Topshop has Petite sizing and well constructed jeans for reasonable prices. There’s nothing like slipping a pair of jeans and feeling like a million bucks without paying a million bucks, and that fun flare is the perfect effortless go to pair.

Kode | Please tell us a little bit more about Who is Carlson Young! Carlson I I play Brooke Maddox in MTV’s TV series “Scream.” At the moment, I’m also studying creative writing at the University of Southern California. When I’m not filming or studying, I love to read fantasy and poetry, watch my favorite TV shows, and eat grilled cheese! Kode | Congrats on your new MTV TV series Scream! Was it any pressure being on the cast since Scream was a huge hit? Carlson | Yes, it’s kind of daunting to take on something so iconic, but this cast is so amazing and talented. Our showrunners, MTV, and the Weinstein’s all have a solid grasp on Scream in 2015 and everything that that might entail. When you think about it, there is so much that we have to work with in this day and age technologically, and our characters and story line really indulge in that. Our killer has the potential to be uniquely sophisticated and tech savvy, which I think is really terrifying. So yes, it’s a lot of pressure taking Scream on, but I think it’s more exciting than intimidating. Kode | Can you tell us about your character? Carlson | Brooke is really layered. She’s got a lot going on in her life. From episode to episode-- huge things happen to her, and it’s finding how her personality will adjust, or not adjust, to her circumstances that I find interesting. It’s a constant balance of figuring out where her loyalties lie. Kode | Any other projects we can expect coming soon? Carlson | Keep watching Scream!! And other than that, I’ll keep y’all posted. (: Twitter: @FollowCarlson Instagram: @CarlsonYoung Kode | #WetHot Were there any moments that really scared you on set? Carlson | There have definitely been some spooky moments, but luckily we watch a ton of funny YouTube and Vine videos to lighten the mood.

Kode | Jamal’s story is so heart provoking and inspirational. Its not common to see a gay black male being portrayed. Was it a lot of pressure preparing for the role? Jussie | Well because the character is based on Lee Daniels, it wasn’t really a pressure, but more of a responsibility to simply tell the truth. That’s something I embrace and love about playing Jamal. He’s such a layered character who is not clear cut black or white, there’s so many shades of grey to who he is, ya know? I love him. Kode | Were you expecting such a huge response on Empire when first starting? Jussie | You know as an artist you pray and you work hard, but you can never really be certain that something will resonate with people the way Empire has. Some of the best projects made are only seen by those who make them. But I did know that it would be critically acclaimed because of the incredible cast, and obviously because of Lee Daniels and Danny Strong. But what it’s becoming is mind blowing! Kode | Give us a day in the life of Jussie before the Empire fame? Jussie | Life was kind of the indie version of what it is now. I was actually recording my album in a home studio off of Fairfax with my producer David, while hustling and working a bunch of different jobs so I could pay my bills, to continue doing what I knew I wanted to do. Kode | Do you have any solo music coming out soon or are you just focused on acting at this current moment? Jussie | I’m always focused on my music because it’s such a huge piece of my heart, right now my focus is on creating the music for Empire Season 2, but once I get a little down time I will focus more on my personal project. Kode | What’s next for season 2? Hopefully more celebrity appearances right? Jussie | Definitely more celebrity appearances, but not in the way that you would necessarily think. It’s really clever the way the stories are all being worked in. There’s also going to be some dope moments of true, raw new talent that’s going to blow your mind. Kode | What’s something you can’t live without? Jussie | Love. Kode | How would you describe your personal style? Jussie | Carey Grant had sex with Basquiat and had a baby named me. Since #Kode6 is our #WetHot issue, we thought we would ask you something steamy, Boxers or Briefs? Jussie | Boxer Briefs, normally briefs with a suit. Never boxers, I can’t stand boxers, go to stay lifted.

MI’CHELE ON S#!T

<THE PERFECT SUMMER FLING>

About Mi’Chele Daniels Mi’Chele Daniels was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She is an RYT Vinyasa | Hatha Yoga Instructor with a background in Ashtanga Yoga, receiving her certification from Caroline Klebel’s Source of Yoga Teacher Training. She is the lead instructor at Harakati Studio in Mid City, Los Angeles, CA and holds indoor as well as outdoor private and semi-private lessons to beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Namaste. Shanti.

Finding the Perfect Person The success of a Summer Fling depends largely upon whom you pick as your Summer Significant Other (SSO). Going about finding the perfect candidate can be a challenge for some but doesn’t have to be. It’s recommended that your summer fling not be anyone you know therefore socialization is imperative. Places such as bars, beaches, pools and even hiking trails are full of attainable candidates, all summer long, just waiting to strike up a conversation with that special someone. Be sure to visit these locations frequently and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone; go to a bar you wouldn’t normally or in an area of your town or city where you don’t ordinarily venture. Leaving that comfort zone also applies when choosing your SSO. Usually date younger then yourself? Pursue someone older. However, it is important to remember that stepping away from your comfort zone does not mean lowering your personal standards. When planning to go out and about in search of someone who is SSO material always dress to impress – remembering to dress appropriately for the occasion – and consider leaving your entourage at home. Large groups of friends can not only be intimidating for someone who doesn’t know you but will also deter you from socializing and meeting new people.

Fling in Full Force Once you’ve met a viable candidate for your SSO swiftly get to know them. Through natural conversation be attentive as you learn about their likes, dislikes, hobbies etc. Set your intention for the fling as well as an expiration date. Your intention should be thoroughly thought through and communicated to your fling in order for there not to be any confusion and your summer to go smooth sailing. This entails making it a point to choose someone who is looking for the same thing you are. Being on the same page is vital for a successful fling with your SSO.

Your specific expiration date however, does not have to be blatantly disclosed to your SSO. If the lines of communication are open as to the grounds of the relationship the existence of a date of expiration would ideally go without saying. While taking part in your summer fling it is important that you have fun and lots of it. Going along with stepping outside of your comfort zone and daily norms, be open to adventure and spontaneity. The time shared with your SSO should be nothing less then blissfully enjoyable. You can assure this by protecting yourself not only physically – “no glove, no love” – but also emotionally. How? Expect nothing and enjoy everything.

Sayonara Summer Fling Each year the summer months seem to pass more and more quickly and that especially applies when you’re part of a summer fling. Once the end of summer rolls around some may find themselves wondering how-to or dreading ending their current fling. If you are one of the many eager to end your fling and get on with your “normal” life it is important to understand that what you do during summer depends on how easy or difficult that end will be to execute. Staying open and honest with your intentions as regards to the relationship is extremely important. You would do well to keep your distance when it comes to personal subjects and focus more on superficialities such as what movies and music your SSO likes or what they like to do for fun. It is especially easy to get carried away when attracted to someone but it is crucial to execute self-control when engaging in summer flings. Never make promises you cannot keep, unnecessarily lie, or lead on your SSO by making the fling out to be more then it really is. When all of these rules are followed throughout the summer you will more often then not find the end of your fling to be painless and swift.

Summer Fling! Fall Romance? Writing a blueprint for the future is virtually impossible when feelings are involved however. Many find themselves brokenhearted at the end of those summer months, mourning the loss of a summer fling they had hoped would turn into a fall romance. To avoid spending your last week of summer crying into a carton of ice cream or laying on your bed for hours, looking at the ceiling, wondering where you went wrong, be honest, from the beginning. And no, we don’t mean the beginning of the fling - at that time you probably never saw this heartbreak coming – but instead as soon as you realized your feelings had grown into something more then what was initially expected. Once you’ve assessed your emotions be open and honest about these feelings with your SSO. If you’re nervous the so-called “talk” might scare them off or take the sexy spontaneity out of your fling, build up to “the talk” – yes “the talk” is inevitable – in a more subtle way. This can be done for instance by discussing the future and planning accordingly. Invite your SSO to the camping trip you and your friends have planned in October or to that sports game you plan on attending in late September. I cant make any promises that you two will be deciding who’s family to visit come December but I can promise you’ll definitely regret not taking the chances that you don’t. If you’re simply looking for a sexy summer filled with uninhibited fun and adventure or one you’ll tell your kids about together at the dinner table when they ask how Mom and Dad met, let your guard down, step outside of that comfort zone and remember it can all start with a Summer Fling.

The Binge

#TBT Summer Movie Vacy Edition SUMMER THE MOST EXCITING OF SEASONS AND PROBABLY HAS BEEN SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME. THAT’S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY IT’S NOSTALGIC; WE ALWAYS GET TOGETHER TO SHARE FOOD, ENJOY NATURE AND SPEND OUR TIME DOING MORE OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO VERSUS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO. THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN PUTTING ON A CULT CLASSIC, POPPING SOME POPCORN AND KICKING YOUR FEET UP NEXT TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE. WHEN PICKING A MOVIE TO WATCH THIS SUMMER, THINK ABOUT SOME OF THESE COMEDIES FIRST.

Wet Hot American Summer: Because now we can look back on camp fondly.

Animal House: Because we all need to get into some hijinx and make some trouble.

The Goonies: Because summer isn’t complete without an adventure.

Heavyweights: Because it’s good to remember we’re all much more alike than we think.

The Graduate: Because sometimes we all feel a little lost and great music can never go bad.

Remember all those wonderful ladies you’ve met in the bathroom at the bar or club? You get their number, take selfies with them and have deep conversations with them. Those girls become your bathroom sisters; your soul mates for the night. But why is it so often that we exchange numbers during our drunken bonds and never hear from one another? Do we all of a sudden become too shy in the morning or pretend like we don’t remember? Well, this summer will be different! And to all those girls you By | Alyx Cohen ever met and dearly miss this will be your tribute to them. This summer when you make friends at a social event make an effort to text them the next day. That’s what making new friends is all about. Taking a chance on someone and making the effort to see it through. Make plans to hang out with them on a not so drunken night and see if there is real potential for a beautiful new friendship. You will never Photo By | Easton Schirra know until you try. One hardship to face as we get older is realizing the friends we have had forever may not have as much in common with us as we once thought. Or maybe they might not have the same interests. In any case, a great option to find people who share the same interests or hobbies is meetup.com. Whether you want to find a reading group or people to geek out with, meetup.com is a great way to meet new people who can potentially become great friends. Even if there might not be a group to your liking you can create your own. So do not be afraid to be different or want to try new things. So when traveling this summer, go out of your way to meet locals and other likeminded people who are traveling too. A great way to do so is by staying in a hostel or going on fun tours. Go out of your way to get to know the people you meet and make plans with them during your stay. That way you can venture into the unknown together or get the VIP tour with locals. They might not be everlasting friends since you may live in different parts of the country or world but they are friends who make imprints in your life. His + Hers

UNISEX FASHION: A PASSING TREND OR THE NEW NORM? By | Eveline Morel

Selfridges’ announcement that three of the floors in its London department store will be converted into gender-neutral shopping is big news for the unisex clothing movement, even if unisex fashion as a trend is old news. Unisex clothing accompanied the sexual revolution of the 60’s and 70’s, then shifted towards gender-specific clothing during the 80’s decade. Grunge and sportswear brought the unisex trend back to the fashion forefront during the 90’s, and it’s still here 15 years later. Is this ‘Everyone’ category of clothing here to stay, or should we be readying for another swing of the pendulum in the coming seasons? There has always been a greater movement towards unisex clothing in the male-dominated business world, or at least a blurring of the line between women’s and men’s pantsuits. Despite repeated attempts to popularize skirts among men, there’s more movement from women’s into men’s clothing, than the contrary. Fashion designers have championed the unisex trend throughout the decades, starting with Courreges and Rudy Gernreich in the 60’s and 70’s, and continuing with Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, Haider Ackerman, Comme des Garcons, and Rad Hourani. Even Miuccia Prada admitted that translating the same idea to both genders has been increasingly more appropriate...

Asia has brought its contribution to the growth of this trend, with the rise of brands like Modement, a Hong Kong unisex line launched in 2010, and Depression, a Singapore unisex T-shirt line launched in 2006. In South Korea, unisex clothing is more than just a simple fashion trend, but rather a manifestation’s of a couple’s sexual intimacy, as both partners dress alike, down to their underwear...

164 | KODE 6

When it comes to oversized sweatshirts, sweatshirts, and button-down shirts that can be worn as tunics, and tuxedo jackets, the men’s department often has a better selection than the women’s. Three of the main reasons for the increased popularity of the men’s fashion department among women are comfort, less competition for the same styles, and lower price than women’s comparable styles. Just recently, while shopping in a trendy Meatpacking District boutique and dissatisfied with the slim pickings offered by the women’s section, I found myself searching the men’s rack for oversized sweatshirts and sweaters to complement my black leather leggings. To my surprise, the men’s rack had much more interesting options than the women’s, at least half a dozen pieces, from Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim, to lesser-known brands. Whereas in the past the unisex trend was championed by avant-garde designers and limited to a certain segment of population, this time around, the trend has been embraced by retailers and designers alike, around the world, not just the fashion capitals. It looks like the unisex trend may be here to stay this time around. Given the recent gender and trans-gender social debates, and the opening of a gender-neutral bathroom in the Capitol and the White House, who’s to say that the ‘Everyone’ department will not become a permanent feature of more fashion retail establishments? Time will tell – but in the meantime, expect to see more women shopping for themselves in the men’s section...

I feel that the family dynamic you get on Bitten is a huge part of why the fans come back every week. The audience truly cares for the characters and their relationships and their well being. They come back to spend time with the characters each week. Yes it is a scifi series but that is just an element of the show. The real heart of Bitten lies with the stories our writers tell, the characters struggles and triumphs. Kode | You also played Supergirl in Smallville, Which character has been the most fun to play? Laura | That is a tough decision. It is like choosing your favorite child. But Elena on Bitten is very close to my heart. I connect with her more than any other character I have played. Kode | Lets face it, Elena is a sexy woman. We couldn’t imagine it being hard for you playing a strong female lead. Laura | I tend to always find myself leaning to towards the strong women roles... But women who are also very emotionally damaged or broken. They are dealing with some sort of deep struggle within. A dark secret. They appear to hold it together on the outside...but are slowly unraveling. I find that compelling to watch as an audience member myself when I chose shows to invest in. As an actor I find these roles challenging and rewarding. Kode | What is your most memorable experiences on the show on or off the camera? Make it juicy. Laura | It is not juicy but it was memorable. (Spoiler alert) At the end of the second season Elena dies in her soulmate’s arms. It was a tough emotional day onset with Greyston Holt who plays Clay. I will never forget it. We were both a mess. It was a magical experience to share that scene with him. On a lighter note, we have a lot of fun off camera on the show. The guys are all wonderful to be around. There was one scene where they needed close ups of us running through the woods. Our director had the idea to have us running on the spot. We all felt like fools, yet videotaped one another doing it. We laughed pretty hard. It was one of those moments where we all genuinely laugh together that are memorable to me. Kode | Do you see any common characteristics with yourself and Elena? Laura | Her need to belong! Her need to prove her worth and strength. Her resilience to being torn down. (on a more basic note... in the books Elena is from Toronto and born September 22nd. We share the same birth place and birthday! So that has to be something!!) Kode | Let’s talk the Bitten fans, What was your reaction to the #RenewBitten and the amazing support?

^

“I tend to always find myself leaning towards the strong women roles”
Kode | This is our #WetHot issue, Give us a peek into your perfect summer day?

Laura | I thought it was incredible to see their passion after season one. The fans really supported the series and muscled their way to have their voices heard with the #RenewBitten campaign. They are all incredible and we could not do it without them!!!

Laura | My perfect summer day!!? Hmmm, would be sleeping in (who does not want that) and then having an amazing cup of coffee in bed. Spend the day out with my dog Frankie and then maybe go to the beach or a BBQ with friends and family! A nice cat nap in the afternoon... And something I have always wanted to do is go to a summer drive-in movie theaters outdoors! Watch an old Hitchcock film under the stars!

Kode | When is Bitten coming back? I know everyone is literally counting down the days!

Kode | Last question, Any spoilers that you can spill the deets on?

Laura | It is too early for me to know. We begin shooting season 3 at the end of August in Toronto! I am sure the premiere date will be announced in due time ;) We just can not wait to get back to work!

Laura | NOPE! I know nothing! (Even if I knew what seasons 3 had in store.... I am not giving anything away.)

Kode | You’ve been on the road to music some time now, what has the journey been like becoming the Luke James we see and here before us? Luke | It’s been great. Plenty of ups and downs but that’s life. Even though show business is not like real life, it is a part of life when you’re in the business. So, I’m enjoying the ride and excited to where it’s taking me. Kode | The legendary Frank Gatson is one of your longtime collaborators, in what way do you feel you’ve benefited from the relationship you two share? Luke | Frank Gatson... Where do I start...LOL? Damn, I have benefitted in so many ways. First and foremost, I’ve gained a great friend and father figure. Even when we disagree and sometimes it gets real because we both are very strong--willed individuals. But the level of respect is always there. He’s been a mentor with an outstanding inside view of the business, and that’s priceless to have someone with that kind of knowledge at your disposal. He’s taught me how to be honest and how to perform and leave everything on the stage. He thinks outside the box when it comes to making music visual, and I dig that. And he has taught me to never be afraid, Own that shit - unapologetically. Kode | Your self titled EP received great critical acclaim, what’s your creative process like when it comes to creating your bodies of work? Luke | Thank you. My process is never quite the same. I do believe everything art-wise starts with a feeling. So I guess it just depends on what and how I am feeling and who I’d like to collaborate with. Then I go into a well equipped studio and get lost in the music until it’s ready. Kode | When can we expect a full LP from you, and what do you think it’ll sound like? Luke | Is this a trick question? LOL... Self-titled Luke James. Kode | We’ve had quite a few amazing male R&B artist debut within the past few years from Miguel to Frank ocean and August Alsina, what will you do as artist to really set yourself apart from the crowd to generate your own lane? Luke | Be myself. Kode | You’re in a very public relationship with another vocal powerhouse Jessie J, can you give us a little peek into you guys relationship dynamic? Luke | I wouldn’t say we’re “very public”, we’re just living our lives. And we actually like each other. Kode | Some of the greatest artists of all time have come from the R&B genre, who do you feel has inspired you most in your artistry and sound? Luke | Too many to name. There is a little bit of a lot of them in me... But I will say that my mother’s and cousins’ collections of music really opened me up to a wide range of sounds. There no limits. Kode | #WetHot: Have you ever sang to a girl to slide into home plate? Luke | Ha! Ha! Of course...

Kode | Let’s jump right into it, Are you excited about your new project ShadowHunters? Katherine | I couldn’t be more excited for Shadowhunters! As a fan of the books myself, I am so passionate about this project. Everyone involved is top notch and really cares about doing justice to the story and the world that Cassie (Cassandra Clare) created so beautifully in the books. I am honored to be a part of this new adaptation. I really think its going to be something special and cannot wait to share it. Kode | What was it like auditioning for the part? would you say it’s different from any role you’ve done? Katherine | The audition process for this role was longer than some, but not the longest audition I have had. I auditioned for the project originally before they even had a director attached, and then didn’t hear about it for months. Then, I had another meeting and multiple tests in a matter of days. Once the news hit social media, things went crazy in the best way possible.

190 | KODE 6

I would say that Clary is different than any role I’ve done. She’s definitely one of the most complex, nuanced, well-rounded character I’ve been presented with. I care about her so much. She’s headstrong, brave, reckless, but she’s also vulnerable, passionate, and falling in love without meaning to. It’s a roller coaster when she’s thrown into the Shadow World, but with the help of the other characters, she manages to land on her feet. Kode | ShadowHunters isn’t the only new project you have going on, the Mazerunner series! Can we know more about your character? Katherine | Yes! Maze Runner: Scorch Trials is another project about which I am ecstatic. Once again, this is based on a book series of which I am a huge fan (thank you, James Dashner). The characters in this series are so well thought out and diverse, I am thrilled to be a part of the team. Sonya is a real badass. She was one of the leaders in the Group B maze and escapes along with Harriet and Aris. The girls get

confident. As soon as I arrived, the entire group welcomed me with open arms and I felt as if I had known them for ages. It really is an amazing team - on screen and off. I couldn’t be more grateful to call each and every one of them my friend. Kode | Any favorite moments with any of your costars on the set of MazeRunner or ShadowHunters? Katherine | Oh so so many…too many to write down here - it would be a novel! Maze Runner was a blast! We were literally in the trenches together for months - dusty, dirty, bruised, and cold, but smiling through it all because we had each other. My sides constantly ached from laughing with the cast and crew. One of my favorite traditions was our Mario Kart obsession. Every night - no matter how late (or early) it was, we would convene in one of the hotel rooms after work and play for hours. Believe me when I tell you these guys are amazingly good at Mario Kart. I’m just passable, but these guys are champions. The Shadowhunters cast bonded immediately as well. Most of us aren’t from Toronto which where we shot the series, so together we had to figure out how to live in the city and it was the best thing for our connection/ chemistry. From fight training, to cast rehearsals, to network meetings, to shootings, to weekend shenanigans, we had the best time becoming the family we are today. Dom and I were friends for almost a year before this project even came up and I’m so grateful that the two of us were cast as Clary and Jace. Because their connection and chemistry on screen has to be so strong, its so nice to have a level of trust and relationship already in place. I’ll never forget the first night we all sat down as a cast for dinner. I had just flown in and was exhausted from lugging six months worth of bags up to my room, but as soon as I saw Dom and met everyone else, I was immediately re-energized, excited to begin the journey, and ready to take on any demon or Downworlder in our way. Kode | What peaked your interest in acting and making it your career? Katherine | I never intended to be an actor. I was a ballet dancer and a softball pitcher who wanted to be an economist when she grew up. Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans… I ran into a family friend who was directing a community theatre production and needed some dancers. I was the kid who would try anything and thought “Why not?” Theatre sounded like it could be a fun way to spend the summer. Indeed it was a blast. I will never forget the moment I stepped on stage on opening night. Something hit me like a brick wall and I knew - this is what I had to do for the rest of my life. There was no doubt in my mind. In that moment, my life changed forever. I’ve never looked back and I’ve never been happier. Kode | Do you feel any pressure being a young hollywood starlet?

separated from Aris at some point along the way. When they reunite - they come back with a vengeance ready to do whatever it takes to survive in the Scorch.

Katherine | When you love and care about what you do for a living, there is always a bit of pressure, self inflicted or otherwise. As a self-admitted perfectionist, a good deal of the pressure I feel is self inflicted, but beneficial nonetheless. To answer your question directly, sure, there is a bit of pressure being in young Hollywood for anyone who wants to be successful in their career. The important part is not to focus on the pressure or what others think you should do or say or become. What is essential is to stay true to yourself and what you know to be good and right for you and your heart and who you are as a human being. If you are able to do that, any pressure and negativity around you will just simply roll off your back.

Kode | Mazerunner was already a huge hit when it landed in theaters, Were you nervous about joining the cast and series? Kode | #WetHot Question : Was it hard not crushing on Dylan O’Brien? Katherine | I was a so excited about joining the Maze Runner franchise. I thought the first movie was so well done Katherine | Haha .. actually no! Dylan has been my brother from day one, and I was honored that they trusted me to bring this part so it never really occurred to me to see him in that light. I have massive respect for him and his work. He is one of the most focused and passionate to life. people I know when it comes to his career. He really cares and it shows in I was a bit trepidatious about joining the cast - who the quality work he does on screen. However, he doesn’t let his care for wouldn’t be? Most of the cast had done an entire film tothe work bog him down - he is still able to have fun on set and crack more gether already and they had already shot part of Scorch jokes than the rest of us combined. I’m so thrilled to have worked with him Trials by the time I arrived on set. It was that first day of and hopefully will get to do so again if Death Cure is made. school nervousness - you never know what the group dynamic is going to be until you get there. However, I knew BY| RYAN MITCHELL Dexter and Dylan from before so that made me more

Kode | Joey Graceffa, I’m sure all of our readers know who you are but for those you don’t please tell us a little about yourself!

“ My book goes far more into detail on the process of how I came out to myself ... ”

Joey | I’m a total nerd, I love anime, crystals, and green smoothies. I love my dog Wolf and wish that I had magical powers. I love to play Minecraft and love reading young adult dystopian stories. I make videos online for a living. I try to post daily but that doesn’t always happen. I love to create imaginative worlds through short films or web series. Most of my life revolves around the internet and it’s through the internet I found the greatest happiness, found my passion, and the majority of my friends. Kode | Youtube is such an amazing platform for young people now, How did you get started? Joey | I was 15 and was already making home movies since I was 8. So on my 15th birthday I got a DVD camcorder and now could upload videos to my computer and edit. Soon I discovered Youtube and it seemed like the perfect place to post those crazy videos I was making. Kode | Who has been one of your favorite collabs with on Youtube? Joey | I love filming with Shane Dawson. He’s so easy and natural to collab with. He’s really funny and always gives me something to react off of. We also have good chemistry. Kode | You have inspired so many people with your recent music video, will we find out more about your journey to self acceptance in your new book? Joey | Of course. My book goes far more into detail on the process of how I came out to myself and then to my friends and family. It also talks about my first experiences in the gay world with dating and first kiss to first heartbreak. Kode | What advice would you give to other vloggers that one day want to reach your success? Joey | It isn’t gonna happen over night. Keep working at it and learn the system. The only way to succeed is through trial and error. You need to see what works for you and learn from others. Kode | Do you have any other projects you are working on? Joey | I’m working on the 2nd season of my web series Storytellers, as well as a new murder mystery reality series funded by Youtube. Kode | #WetHot who’s your celebrity crush? Joey |Zachary Quinto
