Breakfast Rag + Bone

@

By: Mi’Chele Daniels

Across the pond the phrase ‘Rag and Bone’ refers to a man who collects unwanted items. When developing their clothing brand in the early 2000’s founders Nathan Bogle and Marcus Wainwright decided on the name of the distastefully descript English man. Ironically, what that brand has become is far from unwanted and since it’s launch in 2004 Rag & Bone has become everything but. Presently, the brands prominence has elevated drastically in the fashion world and consists of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, a line of jeans, footwear as well as an accessories line. This notable advancement to success did not happen in the thread of a needle, so to speak. Creativity, hard work and in some measure, fate played roles in the evolution of the Rag & Bone we know, wear and love today. Becoming instant friends following crossing paths at a boarding school in their native United Kingdom both Bogle and Wainwright not long after sought out the American dream, moving together to none other then New York City. Having no design or fashion experience under their belts was far from a factor when in 2001 Wainwright concluded that it was virtually impossible, “to find a decent pair of jeans” in the metropolitan melting-pot and set out to create his own, an experience which is attested to as forming Rag & Bone’s In addition to paying homage to the home of their youth in their designs Rag & philosophy today. Partnering Bone, additionally boasts an effortless and laid back, New York City flair, a conwith manufacturing company, tribution originating from years spent in a city full of creative inspiration. Upon the Kentucky Apparel, more then launch of their women’s line, following a successful menswear launch, the brand 500 miles away from NYC, was catapulted into the limelight and vastly recognized for its innovate designs, Wainwright dedicated a year which still held onto an air of classic style. Already developing an A-list following and a half to perfecting his Rag & Bone’s confirmation of triumph came in 2006 when they were presented with product, within the process the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, winning a $25k prize in order to fund founding what we know toa fashion show for the popular New York Fashion Week. day as Rag & Bone, alongside Bogle. Despite their steady rise to prominence and bright future ahead co-founder Bogle departed from the brand in 2006, making way for current co-owner David Launching with a men’s Neville to take his seat. Since the transition there has been no looking back for deline in 2004 the brand was on signer Wainwright and his brand. Winning the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers the forefront of innovation of America) Emerging Talent award the preceding year it became apparent the and a multitude of success - of brand had no direction to go but up. course it didn’t hurt that indieactor Michael Pitt fronted the campaign. Attributable to the success of their men’s line as well as an assiduous work ethic Rag & Bone’s women’s line launched the following year, with one of the top supermodels in the world as the campaign’s star - Kate Moss. If the designs hadn’t have gained the brand favorable attention it was with no doubt their chosen campaign models would. Nevertheless, fortunately for both Wainwright and Bogle both their designs, full of what some describe as possessing an unsurprising “British youth aesthetic,” as well as their choice of models were equally up to par, far exceeding the expectations of a brand which had a modest introduction into fashion.

Today, Rag & Bone is a flourishing lifestyle brand which holds an immense following consisting of celebrities and fashion conscious individuals around the world. This year, the brand has manifested successful seasonal lines, brought on the beautiful yet infamous Winona Ryder to star in a campaign and was additionally nominated for the CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year Award. Rag & Bones inventive approach to fashion accompanied by its superlative craftsmanship is the result of this immense prosperity, and to think, it all started with a single pair of jeans.

Kode | Not even a month ago, it was announced that Rixton will be opening for Ariana Grande during the Honeymoon Tour. How excited are you guys? Jake | It’s a huge honour for us to be asked. We can’t wait to just get out there and have as much fun as possible and see Ariana smash it every night, as well. We’re huge fans of hers. Kode | Your Broken Heart Tour was sold out this past summer. How much fun was it to tour, any cool stops? Jake | It was pretty insane, we didn’t stop laughing! Kansas City was a beautiful place that took us by surprise, the vibe was really cool and I’m a huge fan of Wizard of Oz. No Tin Man, Scarecrow or Lion was there though. Although Charley does look great dressed as Dorothy.

^ “show the swanky side of rixton!”

Kode | How was it performing at SXSW Festival? Jake | We’re huge fans of the festival so it was amazing for us to actually be there let alone play. Our set got crashed though by a certain Mr. Bieber, and we didn’t mind that, not one bit. The place erupted!

Kode| I know many fans would love to know what type of women you are all into. Please share. Danny | Jake likes humour, Lewi likes confidence, Danny likes a nice smile, and Charley likes David Beckham.

Kode | Actually, how did you all meet? Lewi | Jake and Danny met when they formed a covers band with their mutual friends! Then they left that band and began writing together! Around a year later they met Charley when he had been touring in his band for around 8 years and he joined them in writing, another year later they met me through a girl that Jake was seeing and the band hasn’t spent more than a week apart since that day 4 years ago!

“ We live for playing live shows and touring! ”

Kode | How has it been working together for the past couple of years? Lewi | We pretty much lived together for the best part of 3 years before we got signed so we knew what provokes each other! So we can choose whether we want to wind each other up or not! So we actually rarely argue!

Lewi | We live for playing live shows and touring! We are on our UK headline tour from 22nd October till the 7th November and head to the US to play the KISSfm Jingle Ball tour through December, then we’re excited for our album release on January 6th, and have also just been confirmed as support for Ariana Grande on her US tour from February 28th till April 16th!

Kode | Anything that you all would like to share with your fans?

Lewi | Just that we appreciate every one of them for their support, and that it helps us continue on our journey and hope they can grow alongside us over the series of the next few years! And hope we get to meet you all!

Kode | You are only 18 years old and have already done so much! You’ve set up a good foundation both in acting and in music. What made you decide to get into acting/singing? Trevor | I started tap dancing when I was about 3 years old and that led to other things. People saw me tap dancing and were like “Ok you can tap but what else can you do?” So my mom asked what else I felt like doing, so I did a vocal show where I had to dance and act and from there I did the Broadway show The Lion King, I did that for about 3 years. For the whole show I had to dance and sing and act. That was kind of like my training ground for everything I’m doing now whether it be singing or acting. I’m just super thankful that I was able to experience that and come to the realization that this is what I want to do. For the rest of my life, I just want to entertain. There was never a specific part of entertainment just entertainment in general. Obviously I want to venture off and do everything one day. I want to direct, one day I want to write a screenplay, one day I want to produce, and vocal produce. Just any aspect of entertainment, that I can be a part of, I just want to use everything I got. Kode | What other endeavors would you like to go into besides acting and singing?

{

Trevor | Recently this last half of the year I’ve been writing a lot even for my own records. I just started and now I’m writing for other people in different sessions whether it be country records, or any type of records. Just so that I can get my creativity out that way. In entertainment I would like to direct, movies of course. I feel like whenever the timing’s right, whatever opportunities right, I’ll definitely give it my all. Kode | Where would you like to see your music career take off to in the next couple of years? Trevor | I want to have a Grammy by 21, if that’s ok. It really, to me, isn’t about any type of award, it’s about just continuing to do what I love to do, continuing to get better. I have short goals. My short goals everyday is how can I be better than I was yesterday. I feel like if I focus on that, my long term goal will come to fruition. I just really want to become a better writer, a better singer, a better dancer and improve. The reason why I want to do all of this is to influence people in ways that I wouldn’t normally be able to. My goal is to get the whole world to know who I am and to get the majority of the world to love me, so that the decisions I make, in regards to anyone who looks up to me that I inspire them I feel like music is the best way. Kode | So, your EP #NEWTHANG is out,?

Trevor | That has been out for a sometime now, I am excite to get new music out! I’ve been working on my album non stop, I have a Christmas video that I’m ready to release also. I also have a new song with Sage the Gemini called ‘That I know’. I’m really excited about this new music that I’m putting out just to get the fans something different. Kode | When should your fans be expecting an album out from you? Trevor | An album, no later than next year. Preferably early next year, you know sometime in July-ish. Kode | If you had to pick between acting and music, which do you gravitate towards more?

“When you sing, when you write, when you create, from a

Everything they did was for the betonly because when you terment of the world and the people. They saw their art as a tool to acsing, when you write, when complish what they felt they needed to accomplish and their mission you create, from a musiin life. I just respect people who understand that and really care about cal standpoint everything people coming up because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where comes from you. When I’m I’m at. Anything that I’ve just lived in life, I write about Trevor | Trevor Jackson is single and he’s always looking. but when you act you clearly only get into a character that isn’t you. Which By| Laide Akao is the fun part about acting. That’s why I would pick music because it comes more from Trevor and it’s more true to me but I love both, you made me pick (laughs). Kode | Do you have anything planned or in the works acting wise? Trevor | Acting wise, at the moment not right now but I’m always in search of the right role, show, or feature. Just it’s all about timing and opportunity, I feel like when the right role comes along, we’ll definitely make it happen. Kode | Who do you look up to that’s an actor? Trevor | Denzel for sure. That was a no brainer. Have you seen Equalizer? It was amazing. It blew my mind and I could not stop talking about it.

Kode | So you were on the great Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally, how was it being able to come back and shoot with the cast from time to time? Noah | It was my first time guest starring on a TV set and they were all just very welcoming. Going in my second and third time it was like coming back to a family and they were very comforting so it was all a really great experience. Kode | You’ve done some great things with Disney. Disney is known for making so many young actors into huge names. How does it feel to work at such a great company/organization like Disney? Noah | Definitely is an honor. I was the little kid who would look in the mirror & say, “I am Noah Centineo and you’re watching Disney Channel.” Then I would take my fake wand and make the Disney logo. Disney has been great for me and has treated me very well, everyone at the company is so nice and really cares. They have always given me more and more opportunities. Kode | What made you initially want to be an actor? Noah | Well, my sister wanted to be a model, was recruited by a start up agency called John Robert Powers, I was 8 years old and went along just as moral support and they asked if I wanted to audition. After much convincing because I didn’t want to do it my sister and I were both signed. She did a campaign for 3 days came back and hated and I just stuck with it.

Kode | You are so young and out there doing what you want to do, what advice do you have for other young people out there trying to achieve their dreams? Noah | Just go out there. It doesn’t matter what age. If you have a dream go out there and do it. Nothing should stop you from doing what you want to do. Kode |. Are there any actors that you look up to? Noah | Mark Ruffalo, I think he’s great. I really look up to him. He really studies and stays true to the character while still being able to add in a little of himself. Kode | Is there anything else that you would like to do besides acting?

“Nothing should you stop you from doing what you want to do.”

Noah | Acting is the door to other entrepreneurial stuff like fashion and business. But right now I need to focus on my acting in order to open up those doors.

Noah | Any new projects that you’ll be working on soon? Kode | There was a Disney pilot that I was working on, but right now since we are entering the Holidays, auditions run a little slow so I’m focusing on my patience. Patience is a virtue.

The fight for education

{ } In 7th grade, I got my first cellphone. It was such a “pivotal moment for thirteen year old me. I felt my life had changed; I could constantly contact my friends, I could play games anywhere- it was my equivalent to a Bat Mitzvah. I was grown up. I look back and can actually see how much that piece of what could be considered frivolous technology changed me. Without a doubt, having that phone changed the course of my education. I began to use my phone during class, distracting myself with its features. It only got worse as I continued my education in high school and college. As I got older, my phone kept getting fancier. I was able to access the Internet, and once I had that I was completely addicted. With that phone, I could search answers, I could update my social media, I could shop- I could even cheat. Now I sit here wondering how much learning I missed with my hands and head buried in my lap beneath the desk. It prevented me from being my best. I see the way we use technology. We allow it to consume us so much that we miss our buses, run into people while walking, and crashing into cars as we text behind the wheel. Does technology serve as too much of a distraction rather than a learning tool? When I first thought about the question, especially in terms of my use for it,

I couldn’t help but think of all the ways we use technology that impairs rather that support. As I stewed on the thought, I could remember the times when I had been reading old English literature and needed to define a word, or the time when I would leave a textbook at home and was able to access an online version in class, or take a class at home to enable me to learn at my convenience. It’s clear that we are straddling a line with technology, between its potential and its possibilities, and what the general public actually uses it for. We are the generation that obsesses over social media, the way it connects us to people all over the world in an instant, offering glimpses into other’s lives as well as opportunities as consumers, business owners and even capitalists. But what does this offer students? Most students these days have a phone, which allows them to use technology for personal use, but the technology isn’t integrated into their education. We’ve seen bullying via these outlets and potential jobs suffer from the content users keep on their profiles. However, there must be a way to incorporate technology in beneficial ways. With constant access to computers and the Internet, there would be potentially infinite opportunities within education. It would provide students with the ability to research, as well as creating a community or a network that could provide assistance; it could even serve as a replacement for textbooks. It could create an interactive work environment for students, teachers and the curriculum. By integrating the aspects of technology that kids enjoy, we can gear their schoolwork to their interests. It is important to incorporate these elements into existing and tactile curriculums. If we add technology to a classroom environment, we can broaden student’s resources. Plus, the market for jobs in tech is constantly growing, we could help kids better prepare for their future by securing certain skills earlier, like learning code and logic. It is understandable that there may be some hesitation when it comes to modernizing education. Like many of us, we use technology for entertainment, indulging it’s images and social content; we should use this to education’s advantage, really allowing a student to engage with their work, tailored to their needs, giving them access to a world of teachers, tutors and aids. By having the world at our fingertips, we can be aware and knowledgeable. Imagine if students were interested in school again and if teachers were passionate to teach. Education needs an interactive learning environment, customized to the student, that way we’re always aiming high.

Kode| Your visual EP just came out! How excited were you to release this? Mila| I was super excited because I’ve never had a complete body of work come out. I’ve always prepared for it and then something always happens so I was super excited to see it officially go out into the universe. With the album we worked hard on the visuals and branding so we are really happy to have everyone see what we had been working on and what we had up under our sleeves. I am really, really excited, still am. Kode| What made you decide to come out with a visual EP? Mila| Well, I know for me I’m a visual person and I noticed that even in my recording process. With every song I’m visualizing “Oh the video can be this” and then with the directors and the choreographers we were always kind of on the same page while brainstorming different ideas, so when we narrowed it down to those five songs I felt that because they were all so different from each other which is very important to me. Plus, as an artists I love hearing from fans which songs are their favorite but I would hear all the time “I love that song, I wish there was a video for it”. I felt the same way so my visual EP is a reintroduction to showcase the different layers of myself. In this day and age everyone wants to see things as well as hear it, so I thought it was a cool idea. It all worked out with the directors and choreographers and the whole team came through so it was really fun to shoot it all. Kode| It seems like you put in a lot of work. Mila|Yeah, yeah. We did for sure and hopefully it shows.

Kode| Who did you work with for this EP?

“It’s never been a sibling rivalry because we’ve always done it our whole lives”

Mila| For this EP, I worked with 2 newer producers, one named Irich, who did Champion as well as Eric Sire. He did ‘Times Like These’ and ‘Smoke, Drink, Break-UP’, also DJ Mustard did my main and then for ‘Pain In My Heart’ I have a feature from Problem on that one and then a hip hop producer named K-E did that one. Kode| I know that there are some rumors going on that you and Trey Songz have something going on. What do you have to say about that? Mila| I mean we’ve known each other for a long time and we work together. We actually have a record together on his album called Disrespectful that came out in the summer. Kode| You have a famous sister, Jhene Aiko. Do you two ever want to work together? Is there any sibling rivalry or are you guys there for each other? What’s that dynamic like? Mila| It’s totally normal. We grew up in the industry and as children we were always both in it, so you know just finally having it happen was the goal but it did happen for her first, but no it’s never been a sibling rivalry because we’ve always done it our whole lives. It’s not like one of us just got in and the other was like oh let me try it now. It’s all love, ya know we’ve been grinding for a really long time. We haven’t recorded anything yet but I’m sure in the future something will come up. Kode| Are there any current or past musicians that you would like to work with? Mila| Yes, I would like to work with Kanye actually. I want to work with his production or with Swizz Beatz.

Kode| Any past musicians you would have loved to work with? Mila| Well, I am a die hard Bob Marley fan so I think it would be cool to work with him although it would be something totally different from me. I think that he’s one of the ultimate artists so that would be a cool one. Kode| Do you have any musical inspirations. You just said that you are big Bob Marley fan, but is there anyone that you look up to? Mila| Yea, growing up, the artist that definitely inspired me to actually want to be an artist are Prince, Janet Jackson and TLC. I thought they really formed my vision of what I find myself doing. Janet and TLC were innovative, they are strong females and they incorporated dance. I was into that because I started off as a dancer, so it was all the elements that they embodied, I really admired. Kode| The last time we received new music from you was back in 2006. I know you’ve come out with some little things here and there but what made you decide to come out with this EP?

Mila| Well, I am not an expert on that kind of stuff so I don’t ever try to be different and I think that’s where sometimes people can go wrong too. When you try to be different you kind of end up looking like everyone else, you know what I mean? With me I’m just comfortable, of course I like to do things that maybe some people wouldn’t try. I’m definitely an adventurous person but I when something catches my eye and I like it, I am all for it. I’m not necessarily into brands either, like if it’s fine. It’s fine! It could be from Target or Forever 21, it really doesn’t matter to me. If something catches my eye and it’s cheap, I’ll rock it. I try not to get caught into looking at what everyone else is doing and just kind of like listening to yourself and what you feel comfortable in and what you feel most confident in and I think that’s what really goes over anything, just making sure you are confident. I like showy stuff, I like edgy stuff, I really don’t have an in between. I’m either like really tomboyish or like super hippy. Kode| How do you cross the masculine and feminine clothing together so well?

Mila| I felt like I needed to do that just to kind of put a reintroduction out there before I just come out of nowhere with an album, ya know what I mean? I thought it was a good time to be like “Okay, I’m back, here’s what I matured into, here’s my growth, my evolution” and then come with the album. I think I just wanted to do the EP first to just act like an easing into the album so to speak.

Mila| I think because I’ve been doing this for a long time. I used to get picked on in school because my clothes were too big literally.I still haven’t outgrown my tomboy stage. Even for fashion week, I went but I still was able to be a tomboy by wearing men’s suit and just getting them tailored and then doing something to make it more feminine. My aim is to marry two worlds but I’ve been a tomboy like literally my whole life. I’m really comfortable in guy’s clothing and kind of changing that into something feminine, if that makes any sense.

Kode| What should your fans all expect from you this year and the years ahead?

Kode| Where would you like to see your career in the next couple of years?

Mila| For my growth, of course I’m always trying to top what I’ve done last. So even with the album, you know I just would hope that everyone, you know, thinks it’s even better than the EP. Literally just the dancing, everything to just always keep evolving and you know get better. You know it will be R&B, it will have some hip hop and some pop influence in there, but yea just fun. You know? I’m just ready to have fun with everybody. I think everything’s kind of so serious and I remember the music that I even danced to in the 90’s, I always think that’s just because the vibe of that music was just good energy. It was about having fun so I just really want that to translate everywhere else with my work.

Mila| In the next couple of years? I’m open… I’ve gotten over this whole thing as far as plans because I just know that life does it’s thing and you are just along for the ride. Of course I would like to be headlining my own tour by then and internationally, not just in America. I want to get into acting and have a couple albums under my belt. I just want to continue to grow and ultimately be happy. I just always want to be happy with whatever that I’m doing, ya know, and not lose the passion and that fire, so I just hope to be as excited in 5 years as I am now.

KODE| Your style is amazing. Every event that you go to you dress different than everyone else there. Where does your fashion inspiration come from?

Kode| MTV’s Faking It is back for a second season! How excited are you for that? Gregg | Very! We just got picked up for 10 more episodes for season 2B, so the fans have something to look forward to! Kode | Are you close to any members of the cast? Gregg | We are all very close and there truly is a special bond between us on set, along with the crew. Kode | You have made some excellent appearances on some great TV shows, how was it working with Selena Gomez on Wizards of Waverly Place?

sucked

at

Gregg | Working on the show was fantastic. I learnt a lot about timing and professionalism. Plus, the exposure the show gave me is indescribable. Gregg | Yes. Producing, directing, real estate and I want to do a lot of Kode | How was it working charity work. alongside all the girls from Pretty Little Liars? Kode | What made you decide to be an actor? Gregg | I still am in contact with some people from the show. All the guys were super cool Kode | Do you keep in contact with anyone from Wizards of Waverly Place or Pretty Little Liars? Gregg | Yes. It’s sometimes hard to keep in contact with everyone because of our schedules, but when we can hang it, we make it work.

Gregg | I sucked at everything else! Kode | How would you describe your style? Gregg | Over the past couple of years, I definitely feel my style is European with a hint of an American edge. Kode | So, is Gregg Sulkin taken or single? I know lots of our female readers want to know! Gregg | I think it’s super important to keep relationships as private as possible in the entertainment industry. Kode | So you have a hit TV show, anything else in the works for you? Gregg | It’s taking all my time up! But I have 2 new movies coming out in 2015: “Antisocial” and “Don’t Hang Up”

Kode | Any spoilers or news spill about the second season of Faking It?

you

can

Gregg | There’s a lot more drama this season and the secrets are spilled every episode. The performances are even better than the first along with the writing. It’s a good show. We are proud of it. Kode | Is it difficult masking your accent for TV? Gregg | No. I’ve played an American so many times I’m used to it now. Kode | How was it having Laverne Cox guest star on Faking It? Gregg| She was very very good and very grateful to be working on our set. She had a great energy and attitude about her. Kode | Is there anything else that you would like to go into besides acting?

A man About TOwn> The kings behind The H Wood Group.

Kode | What made you decide to pick a name like The Nice Guy? John| It has a couple of meanings, but the main reason was we wanted to create a place for our friends, which we call our mafia. It’s a play on the whole mafia thing, but really has to do with our group of friends. The other reason is that we’re a good group of guys, including the people that we are associated with. Unfortunately there’s this common idea that you can’t get ahead by being nice and I find that to be wrong. We’re the nice guy in this industry and that’s the major reason why we called it that. Kode | So what made you guys decide to go with the mafia theme? John | We wanted a place that describes our group of friends that we call our mafia. It’s a play on the whole Sinatra era. Kode | How did you guys go about implementing that whole mafia theme in the décor, the food, the music? How is it shown throughout in the restaurant? John | So, it’s supposed to feel like you’re in Sinatra’s Palm Springs house. It was designed by John Socio and we tried to implement the theme with the dark woods, the floral pattern of the couches and banquettes, the vintage style of the lights, and the hints of brass against the wall. All of that is very reminiscent of that era. We also have a table in the kitchen, which we call the mafia table. It’s the chef’s table that requires a reservation for that area. That area also is very similar of that era. As for the food, it’s amazing, it’s a great version of pizza and meatballs, an Italian skewed type of food.

Kode | I know that this is a step above a restaurant and not exactly a club, making it more of a lounge. Some people get confused with the word lounge and just confuse it with a bar. Could you further elaborate on what a lounge is and how it is in regards to The Nice Guy? John | Yeah, I think we really set out to do, and our achieving, is a gathering place. If you want to have a great meal, a night out, be with friends, or meet new friends you can do that here. A restaurant is limited and a night club is limited because you only get one or the other. In this case you really can feel like its your night out. You can just go here for drinks and feel great or you can just go here for food and feel great. You can’t do that at a restaurant or a night club. You go to a club and you have to get a table and bottle service, be there at midnight and it’s a whole different thing. If you just go to a restaurant, at the end you pretty much leave and its boring. So we’re hitting that stride, that’s needed right now, and it’s being done by the highest caliber of food, by being very specific about the design and decor, and also by making sure that the base crowd is reservation only. At any give time, I personally know 80% of the place and that’s a good thing. It’s friends and friends of friends, it’s a real gathering place of people and that’s where it will grow from. Kode | Did you make it a reservations only place because you wanted it to be friends or friends of friends? John | A couple of reasons actually: The main reason is that it’s a tiny place. You only have so many tables and it’s very hard to manage that when you only have a certain amount of seats. So the way you kind of keep it as a place of repeat loyal customers and people wanting to come is that you cater to them. People feel like it’s their second home. We have people there 4 nights a week right now, eating and entertaining. It’s been a special place. Kode | How has it been since it’s been open to you? John | It’s exceeded everything that we hoped for and that’s always a good thing, knock on wood. And it’s all because of the people. The people who live in that area, the locals, are really good. And we’re really good to our core base of customers. There’s a little stage, people sing, we have live music there 3 nights a week. Which I find to be a good addition, because it doesn’t really happen in LA. Kode | So on the nights that you don’t have live music, what type of music do you have playing throughout the lounge?

John | It’s a mix of oldies. We stay away from a lot of modern stuff, so it’s all genres of oldies. It could be old hip hop, it could be old rock. It’s just slightly above background music and then on weekends, like after 11, it’s a little louder. We have cool DJ’s there on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays that go on at 11 PM. Kode | It seems like you have it all going on at The Nice Guy. You have good music, you have the food, you have the drinks. Are you guys trying to achieve that one stop shop? John | Yeah, we are. We are trying to achieve this for a demographic that appreciates that. So if you really are just looking for a nightclub then we have nightclubs and that’s not this. If you’re just looking for a restaurant, this probably works, because that’s what it is. It really skews to more a restaurant/lounge. Kode | How was it as H.Wood group making your first restaurant? John | It’s been interesting. It’s something that we spent a lot more preparation, prior to opening. We did probably 4 months of solid prep work with the chef and the staff in training, the food, everything. As for clubs and bars, you just do a week prior, you know? This though, is a lot more specific and I personally love it. I think it’s something that if you don’t love, then it’s a scary thing, but I obviously love it. I think food brings people together, it’s a true thing. I’m definitely noticing that food is a big deal for my groups of friends. Even in general with people, whether its events, celebrations, or just a normal night out, food really creates a gathering. More so than anything else and I think that’s what I’ve been enjoying. Kode | On the Instagram bio, you have the hashtag: finish first. What does that mean John | That kind of goes back to why we named it The Nice Guy. When I was starting out in this business, I was running across some other people in this business with not the best integrity and ethics. That’s the exact opposite of how I am and how my partner is. We’re extremely above board in all aspects of business and life and we also do a lot of charity work. We like helping others. So our whole thing is that nice guys can finish first, that’s why it’s hashtag finish first.

Broods| It feels strange because it has existed for so long in our lives and all of a sudden people are hearing it for the first time. Its exciting because people know the words to the songs at our shows now! Kode| ‘Evergreen’ immediately shot to number 1 in the New Zealand charts, where were both of you when you found out, and how did you react to the news? Broods| We were just at the start of our American tour on the bus when we got the message, we popped a bottle of champagne and high-fived each other, it was incredible! We may have actually done a wee dance as well, haha. Kode| The Broods most definitely have definitive sound, but the style of your music doesn’t seem to have a specific genre. How would you guys describe your music? Broods| I guess it’s technically electronic pop, though we’re very expressive and honest. We sing more about sadness and love and all that emotional shit, rather than dancing in the clubs with your hoes. Kode| With such immense success, this year has been crazy for the both of you! You got to tour with Haim, what was that like?

^

but we’re very expressive and honest.”

^

Kode| Your incredible album ‘Evergreen’ has been out since October 7. How does it feel to have your first fulllength record out?

“...Its technically electronic pop Broods| Those girls are incredible! We were already massive fans of their music, but seeing them live and perform just reinforced how rock star they are. Kode| You also toured around with the incredible talent, Ellie Goulding for a bit. was that everything you’d hoped it would be.. or more? Broods| She’s awesome!!! A really on point performer vocally with a rockin bod, but also a real cool chick to just chill with. Really enjoyed being in her company and her crew were super cool as well. Kode| We’ve also heard amazing things about you guys touring with Sam Smith. How was that and how does it feel to have such talented people to call your peers? Broods| Sam is one of the most adorable humans ever. Extremely lovely and such a fun-loving guy. It was so fun getting to know him and his crew, a very unforgettable experience. Broods| Overall, we have been so lucky to have toured with some amazing acts, all that we were already huge fans of! Touring as a support is an awesome experience as you get to observe how they perform etc, and you can learn so much from everyone. Kode| So, is Sam Smith as lovable a person as he seems? Broods| Sam was very welcoming from the first show and the biggest sweetheart you will ever meet!

Kode| Would you ever want to collaborate with Haim, Ellie Goulding, or Sam Smith? That would be some amazing music right there! Broods| Yes! Collaborating with any of the three would be a huge honor and privilege!

Broods| I think we would both agree on working with SOHN, who is definitely one of our favourite artists/producers to flourish recently.

Broods| This is our third time touring the States, but our first time traveling around on a tour bus! It was really great not having to spend quite as much time at airports. We bought push bikes in Seacaucus which came in handy for exploring towns we stopped in. Troutdale was my (Caleb) favourite town this time round, Georgia’s was Nashville.

Kode| Any past musicians?

Kode| How is working with your sibling?

Broods| Jeff Buckley

Broods| Working with a sibling makes the whole process of writing and touring so much easier. It’s like working with your best friend, except you can be even more honest and you’ve always got support.

Kode| Of all the talent that is out in the world right now, are there currently any musicians that you both would like to work with?

Kode| What is your musical inspirations, who do you look up to? Caleb: Danger Mouse Georgia: Natasha Khan Kode| I know you’ve made some cool stops during your visit, like Los Angeles, Niagara Falls, and Chicago. How has it been touring in the United States? You’re Instagrams must be flooding!

Kode| Is Broods a whole family affair? Broods| Our family are extremely supportive of everything we’re doing, so in a way it is a whole family affair! One of our sisters sung backing vocals on one of the album tracks. Kode| Anything new we should be on the lookout for from Broods? Like some possible new music? Broods| It’s top secret James Bond stuff...but hopefully this is just the beginning!

Budda Castle >

#KodeTrip> by|andrew boston

Budapest is an enchanting city that has much to offer during the day and becomes quixotically spellbinding at night. It ranks on myriad international lists as one of the most beautiful and idyllic places to live and visit, and with good reason. The capital of Hungary, Budapest is situated in the middle of Europe. The Danube River courses through the heart of the city, and once separated the city of Buda from Pest until unification in 1873. Modern day Budapest is a melding of glamorous old world charm and history with modern advancements in technology, architecture, and the arts.

Sziget>

There is no shortage of great monuments, government buildings, and palaces to see in Budapest. Buda Castle is one of the most prominent and imposing fixtures along the Danube and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across the Danube from the Buda Castle is the Hungarian Parliament Building. The Parliament building was completed in 1904 and was built in the Gothic Revival Style with statues of Hungarian and Transylvanian rulers and military figures adorning the façade. The building features a great hex decagonal center hall and is completely symmetrical. One side of the Parliament is used for government business and the other for tours. St. Stephens Basilica is a Roman Catholic Basilica and holds the right hand of the first King of Hungary after which it was named. Today it is the third largest church in Hungary, and host’s concerts yearlong. From most of Budapest a great statue can be seen high of the Danube on Gellert Hill. The Liberty Statue commemorates those who lost their life for Hungary’s independence and prosperity, and is a great vantage point to see the entire city.

St. Stephens>

One of the main attractions in Budapest is the great Saps and Thermal Baths. The thermal springs are one of the reasons the Romans originally chose to establish a settlement on the west of the Danube. Today there re still several great Baths to visit and each offers a different style of architecture and history. At one time the Bath’s were segregated and only open to certain sexes on certain days so that visitors could bath in the nude. Today only Rudas Baths, a Turkish bath dating back to 1550, offer gender specific bathing days. One of the most popular is the Széchenyi Baths, one of the largest complexes in Europe. From the outside it would appear you are approaching a great palace, however this great bathing complex has always been open to the public and today even host night pool parties with great DJ’s and lights during the summer. After a great day of relaxing at a Bath, a great way to meet locals and other tourists, and pre game for a fun night on the town is to check out a Ruin Bar. Ruin Bars began popping up around Budapest in the early 2000s and have saved many gorgeous old buildings from being torn down to make way for modern ones. However, Ruin Bars do not renovate or restore the buildings, simply decorate them in the theme of the bar. One of the most popular Ruin Bars is Szimpla Kert, which appears on many lists of best bars in all of Europe.

<Boscolo Budapest

Budapest is also known for the small islands that run along the Danube River. These islands are great to visit anytime of the year, but also host music festivals. Sziget is one of the largest musical festivals in all of Europe, and lasts 7 days straight in August on Old Buda Island. If huge music festivals are too daunting and you prefer a smaller scene, check out great performances that take place under the Chain Bridge during the summer in Budapest. On some nights a pop up bar and impromptu festival of music and performing arts occurs, where one can see fire breathers, dancers, and bands. As an American tourist in Budapest, one of the highlights was the great exchange rate as Hungary is not yet on the Euro. While this does not make much of a difference when shopping at some stores, especially international brands, when it comes to hotels, food and drinks, the dollar goes a lot farther than it does in many other European capitals. There are several five star hotels in the center city for less than 200 USD a night. The Boscolo Budapest features the New York Café, which has been called the “most wonderful café in the world,” an underground spa with baths, a grand lobby, and enchanting façade. Also the Le Meridian has a terrific location in the middle of shopping and restaurants and steps from the Danube. Budapest has managed to hold on to its heritage and charm while continuing to move along with changing times as can bee seen in its new stadium and metro line. This great capital continues to mesmerize tourists of all ages and inclinations and will continue to do so for years to come.

Kode | Teen Wolf has been a hit since summer of 2011. How do you feel to be on such a great show? Holland | It’s been so surreal to have a job that was in the field of my choice right out of college. Especially after the recession in 2008thanking my lucky stars to say the least. Kode | How is the cast? Are all of you really close? Holland | We definitely have a unique bond. We have grown up together- helping each other through our ups and downs on and off screen. Kode | What do you like about playing Lydia on Teen Wolf? Holland | I love how she is proud of her intelligence and somehow manages to curl her hair before school ever morning... Kode | Every single time you are seen on the red carpet, you are seen in such beautiful classic dresses. Where do you find such amazing clothes? Holland | Karen Raphael, my friend and stylist, and I have a blast sculpting each look, haha. Even when we are fighting for each of our choices it’s all out of the goodness of our hearts and our love for creating a look. It’s playing in a fantasyland. Haha, how to dress for a red carpet is not exactly a normal look. And certainly not a natural process. Kode | How would you describe your style? Holland | Classic shape, accentuating an hour glass. Kode | Any style inspiration? Holland | Bardot.Coddington. Becall. All sorts. Kode | What made you want to be an actress? Holland | Storytelling. That world, when the movie continues for weeks in your head. I wanted to live in that world. Kode | Any actresses/actors that you look up to? Holland | Michael Shannon. Allison Pil. Dane Dehann. Mia Farrow. Paul Neeman. Jack Nicholson. Kode | Anyone that you would like to work with on a future project? Holland | Dave Franco has mastered quirky cute. Kode | Do you want to only be an actress or are there other ventures that you would like to go into? Holland | I’m a huge advocate for exploring immersive journalism. Kode | True or Fiction: Are you a natural redhead? Holland | Haha yes. Let’s say I hated it growing up in Texas where blondes reigned supreme. Kode | You are the face for BCBGeneration’s Fall Campaign. How was it working with BCBG? Holland | A rush metaphorically and physically.

senior year in high school. I’m homeschooled while I’m, working and traveling the world. I get to meet incredible people and see places that I’ve dreamed of. So when I have my moments of “Man, why can’t I just Kode | It seems like YouTube has been a strong instrugo to the movies today or why can’t I just stay in my pajamas and not put ment in your success. I just have to say making videos on there? to myself “Ok, Becky, get it together, you’re living the dream right now! So, Becky | think it’s the thing to do, to it’s bittersweet for sure but a lot more share your music with people. I just Becky | Incredible! touring in general, is already sweet than bitter. love entertaining people and getting such a crazy experience. You get to literally get on a plane, get on stage, then onto the next city, then cool comments. I was doing it on a Kode | You are a Covergirl! How is that for you? time, to get on stage on time, to be able to do sound called The Jam, they really believed check. It’s really go, go, go and there are a lot of moin me! We did my professional covers Becky | Being a Covergirl is pretty ments of like hurry up and wait. Sometimes you have when I was only 14, and we recorded a awesome, I grew watching America’s these like boring moments where you’re like “Aww, cover by Jay-Z and Kanye called Otis. Next Top Model, and seeing Queen we have to wait how long for a sound check?! How has your family been there for you through Kode | So you have a new album this entire change into becoming a giant pop star? Becky | Super surreal, you know coming out, how are you feeling? Are it’s crazy how the internet is literally you excited about the album? Becky | honestly, my family is my everything and changing people’s lives, I really feel I feel like when it comes to first impressions, a lot of grateful for everything that’s hapBecky | Super excited about the alpeople’s first impression when they meet me is not just pened. I mean, I’m in this moment bum just because it’s taken forever meeting me but like 20 of my other cousins that I bring where I haven’t really processed that to finish since I was signed at 14 years to the studio with me. People feel not just connected old turning 15. Like I said, it’s a process my life has changed so much because to me but also to the way I get along with my family for sure but you know I feel like everyit’s literally just go, go all the time. But I and to them and their stories. I am really thankful for thing happens for a reason and evdo have my moment’s where I kind of them and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t erything works in it’s own time. Everytake it all in, it’s just so surreal. It’s just for them. thing couldn’t be aligning any better like wow, this is my life now. so we’re ready, it will probably be out Kobe | What do you have to say to young girls who at the top of next year, and yeah I’m Kobe | Have you always want to be are like you, who have a lot dreams and have a lot working with really incredible people a singer? of ambition and don’t know exactly how to go about that I love so much that are so inspirchanneling it. What advice would you give for them? ing and also teaching me a lot.

Becky | I think yea, I used to say it when I was younger. The thing is I’m Mexican, and I have a big ‘ol family, I have so many cousins and we’re all close and there’s always running around and diapers and stuff, and the only way to get someone’s attention was literally to put on a talent show. Whether it’s at a birthday party, a wedding, Christmas, whatever. So, I just love entertaining people and my family noticed too. My brother told me “You need to do this on the next level!” It was when I was like 9 years old when I was like “Alright, I’m going to take this seriously, I need to get my life together.” Kode | Do you feel like you’re missing out on any normal things that teenagers get to do around your age?

Becky | My advice for girls my age, maybe even younger and maybe even older who want to accomplish things in life is it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the entertainment business. I think be patient with yourself, I’ve learned so much about myself throughout this process and I feel like the most important thing I’ve learned is patience because there’s a lot of figuring out life and figuring out who you are and what you want in life and what you are going to do. So as long as you are patient with yourself and love yourself and your confident, everything’s going to work out. The truth is anything is possible. Like I said my life got changed by just posting a video on Youtube, so I feel like just have fun and be the age that you are. Sometimes I get caught up, I feel like I’m 25 sometimes and then I’m like “No no no, I’m 17. I just got to take a breather, go swimming, watch Netflix and eat lots of junk food and I’ll be good”. So just enjoy life.

Becky | I mean I’m definitely missing out on a lot of things teenagers get to do now a days, especially at 17. I’m going to 18 in March and that’s like prime time,

Kobe | So what should we expect from you on this album? Becky | This album you can just expect a lot of stories. I have so much fun when I make music and its really just another way for me to express myself. I like being in the studio and being apart of writing the lyrics and whatnot, I really like being a part of the creative process. So these songs, for me, they’re like capturing the moment, it’s like taking a picture. When you look at a picture you can see who you’re with, where you were at, and what it was like at that time in your life and when I listen to my songs, I think about who I was with and what I was going through, where I was, and that’s why my music is so special to me, I just can’t wait to share it with everybody.

Kode | You actually had to chance of opening for some amazing acts, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo. How was it touring with all of these amazing artists?
