hen the word ACNE comes to mind most experience nightmarish flashbacks to the pimple-ridden face of their teens, but for lovers of fashion and art— like Acne Studios’ creative director and head designer Johnny Johansson—those four letters stand for much more. Ambition to Create Novel Expression, to be exact. A creative collective established in 1996 by the Swedish born designer, the incorporation of fashion into what was initially a furniture-based business developed in 1997 when Johansson made 100 pairs of raw denim jeans and gave them away his friends. After this gesture, word of the brand spread and ultimately lead to its success as the major fashion and design brand it is today. Although known mostly for their fashion subset (specifically, their denim), the Acne collective is a manifestation of Johansson’s aspiration to combine fashion, music, art, and advertising. With a family group consisting of Acne Advertising, Acne Film, Acne Digital, Acne Art Department, toy line Acne Jr, biannual magazine, Acne Paper and, of course, the fashion brand known simply as Acne; the collective has, not surprisingly, been compared to Johansson’s idol Andy Warhol’s factory.
The denim-based capsule collection likewise legitimized the already-progressing brand in the eyes of the high fashion community. With a total of 39 mono-brand stores—called “Acne Studios”—in 13 countries (the most recent and largest opening this past December in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles), there is no doubt that Acne has become what some have called “the leading fashion force for the next generation”.
Along with the foundation of designs from Johansson’s creative mind, Acne holds pride in its eclectic, detailed, custom approach to designing and developing its collections. Setting out with the goal to create an “all-including lifestyle brand,” Acne Studios has succeeded at creating clothing, accessories, and footwear for both men and women. With versatile pieces that are simple-but-functional, Acne has something for everyone, which holds true to their philosophy of creating a “framework for individuality.” With its various collections that have been described as fairly generic (based on their classic denim jean and work-style influences), the brand allows consumers flexibility in assembling the pieces with those in their existing wardrobe. This flexibility has given the brand mass appeal. Appealing to the masses, without a doubt, means brand expansion. Unlike its contemporaries, however, Acne has not reached these masses through standard fashion campaigns or media outlets. Yes, one may see a rare Acne advertisement here or there, but Johansson and his brand have unconventionally chosen to market themselves primarily through Acne Paper--A publication Johansson describes as a way to, “…express [their] world…” Each issue, based on individual themes, contains contributions from prominent figures in the worlds of fashion, art, design, and culture such as Carine Roitfeld, Mario Testino, and Tilda Swinton. Joining forces with contrasting fashion brands has also served the brand well. Following a lucrative collaboration with high-end fashion house Lanvin in 2008, Acne gained an abundance of attention in the fashion world.

isaac_sterling Equipped with the ability to conquer any photographic task put before him, Isaac Sterling had the honor of shooting Mrs. Tamar Braxton, and from looking at the photos we can all agree that he truly knocked it out of the park making Mrs. Braxton look the best we’ve ever seen her before. His easy going and professional demeanor were just cherries atop of some of my favorite images within this issue.
cantrell_mitchell Yes, I have already put in my order for my Halloween wig – and you’ll just have to wait and see. Mitchel, a true hair and wig connoisseur and a true needle in a haystack is quickly on the rise as one of LA’s go to hairstylist for the edgy and daring, and even the sexy and demure. Mitchel’s arsenal of references and willingness to take risks will truly take him far.
-/contributor$/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, the accent may have helped his cause but Turnbull’s infectious energy and striking in-camera features definitely didn’t hurt. Turnbull, fresh from the land down under has already attained quite a collection of achievements and Kode being just another stop on his road to fashion domination – can you say #ReturnOfTheMaleSupermodel.

Working with a photographer for the first time is always a nerve-wracking situation. However, Raul was the least of my worries for our feature with hiphop’s new golden boy Meek Mill. Singson captured the exact vision we had for the MC and made the experience definitely one for the record books. ;)

A tribute>
<to mandela Known as a controversial figure to some, a politician and activist to others, and “the father of the nation” to his country, Nelson Mandela was no doubt a revolutionary. Born in South Africa to a royal family during the beginning of the 20th century, Mandela became interested in and chose to study law as a young man. While living in Johannesburg, South Africa where he had earlier moved to study at the University of Witwatersrand he became deeply involved in politics. Shortly after becoming a part of the African National Congress (ANC), Mandela—influenced by Marxism with a dream to end apartheid, poverty, and inequality—not only joined, but also sat on the central committee of the South African Communist Party. Despite the fact that his ideal method of bringing about this change was through peace, a young Mandela soon co-founded a militant extension of the ANC called Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which translates to “Spear of the Nation.” Through MK, Mandela led a campaign against apartheid in the South African government. The campaign, brought about through guerrilla forces, was shortlived, though, and Mandela was arrested in 1962. The lawyer and freedom fighter was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of “conspiracy to overthrow the state.” While serving his sentence, campaigns developed around the world lobbying for his release. The campaigns were successful, as Mandela was released in 1990 after serving 27 years behind bars. A man with a strong conviction to change the world into a better place, Mandela continued as if he had never been imprisoned not only as an activist, but also as a politician and earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Following the uniting of forces with the President at the time to abolish apartheid in the South Africa and institute multiracial elections, Mandela won the election of 1994 and became the first president democratically elected in the country.Propagating a new constitution, Mandela ended apartheid in South Africa indefinitely. Staying true to his main focus, Mandela, also during his presidency, created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a commission which investigates previous cases involving the abuse of human rights. Bringing about even more change with his administration, proceedings were set to reform the land, expand healthcare, and battle poverty. While his country and people were a main concern, a true love for all humans prompted Mandela to also perform philanthropic and activist work internationally. Subsequent to the conclusion of Mandela’s term in June of 1999, the Nelson Mandela Foundation was established. As an elder political figure, Mandela, through his foundation, centered his attention on charitable work. This work included and includes to this day: building schools for children, aiding in fighting against HIV-AIDS, and peace interventions, to name a few. For a man like Mandela, the work of making a difference for the better was never done. An active philanthropist and activist until his recent death due to ill health in December of 2013 at his home in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela, having received more then 200 honors throughout his life, is celebrated worldwide as a man who made a difference as the voice for all people.

Kode: For those that may not know Tamar Braxton the artist, can you introduce us to her? Tamar: I like to let my music speak for itself. I don’t like defining myself as an artist because then people will try to put you in a box. I just like to make good records, I feel like when you create good music than it’s just that good music. So I would ask anyone who doesn’t know me as an artist to go listen to my album, as my music is the best description of me. Kode: You are one of the hardest workingwomen in show business right now, how do you manage balancing it all from motherhood to a career? Tamar: I don’t view anything I do as work, I love everything I do. My life and career are the best things in the world to me, so I take advantage of every single opportunity that comes my way because I enjoy it all so much. Kode: You are a very opinionated and empowered woman and mother, do you consider yourself a modern day feminist, and what advice would you give to other young working mothers? Tamar: I do consider myself a modern day feminist, it is very hard to be a woman in this industry and run multiple businesses. It is hard because when you are aggressive and demand the respect that you give you are looked at as a bitch. The advice I give to other young working mothers is to first be organized. That is very important in making sure you hit all of your marks and don’t miss anything. You also have to know which hat to put on and when to put that hat on. You cannot have your mommy hat on when its time to take care of business and vice versa. The only way to be successful is to have the proper balance and that has been key to me and my success. Kode: You’re album “Love and War” was a smashing success, and touted by some as the best R&B album of the year. What was your initial reaction to the immediate success? Tamar: I was excited but I was not surprised, I knew that “Love and War” was an amazing album and something that was missing in the marketplace. Since that genre isn’t selling as it did ten years ago and a lot of people were scared to make a traditional R&B album I knew that I was the perfect person to create an R&B album at this time. I took that chance and created something I could stand behind and all the support I received really means a lot to me. Kode: Seeing as “Love and War” was such a shining success, how do you plan to follow that up sonically, and when can we expect a taste? Tamar: When it comes to the next album I am not going to try and outdo “Love and War”. That was what I was going through at that time and as a songwriter, I was telling my life and my story. When approaching this next album I will take the same steps, letting the music be created organically and seeing how things pan out, I am not in a rush to put anything out. I want everything to be perfect and that takes time, so in the meantime we still have “Love and War” out and are still working that album. “Pieces” will be the next single. Kode: Speaking of new music will you be collaborating with anyone on your new project? I think we speak for the whole world when we say a duet between you and Toni would be legendary! Tamar: We are still in the very early stages of creating the new album, so at this point there aren’t any collaborations locked in. I do have a wish list of artist I would like to work with, but I want those collaborations to be a surprise, so we will have to see. Kode: You’ve won 3 Soul Train Awards and also become a 3 time Grammy nominated artist. How did you take it all in, and do you feel like it’s changed you in any way? Tamar: I don’t think those accolades have changed me in anyway because I have always believed in myself. Over the years I knew it was coming and I was prepared, I always knew that if I worked hard my day would come, and that day is now here. I appreciate and respect the acknowledgement; it lets me know my hard work isn’t overlooked. By Roshada Powell

The founding father of pop art Andy Warhol, brought together through his creative space known as “The Factory”, some of the most influential artist, musicians and models of the time. Focusing largely on the recreation of iconic objects, such as his famous Campbell’s soup can, through paintings Warhol’s unconventional creative mind and openly gay lifestyle set him up to go down in history as one of the most inventive artist of the 20th century.
Shepard Fairey> A product of the Skateboard counterculture of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Shepard Fairey’s medium as a young artist at the time, to no surprise, became street art. First emerging into the street art world with a sticker campaign known as “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” and then later an “Obey” campaign, a spinoff of the OBEY clothing line Fairey has since gained controversy over the use and lack of attribution for images and phrases used in some of his works. However praises have also been bestowed onto the artist, most recently gaining positive acknowledgment for his Obama HOPE campaign.
<banksy The anonymous UK based artist known simply to the world by his alias. Bansky has ruled as king of street art since the early 2000’s, using stenciling techniques in order to create his pieces on public walls in cities throughout the world. Bansky by means of graffiti prevues art with a message, touching on social and political commentary through bleak humor and witticism.
<Frida Kahlo Known widely for her intriguing, colorful and at times unflattering self-portraits, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo has since her emergence as an artist been praised for her work. For the most part a recluse due to ill health, the bisexual painters detached existence greatly influenced her paintings. Other influences included her turbulent marriage with fellow artist Diego Rivera as well as the numerous miscarriages she experienced during that marriage. Touching on surrealism as well as Mexican culture and mythology, Kahlo, through traditional bright colors brought light to her pain.

Alexander Kargaltsev> Gay and from Russia, life for photographer, film director, writer and activist Alexander Kargaltsev has not been easy. Currently based in New York the young creative touches largely on his “fascination with the naked body” through his art. His unorthodox and contentious pieces have catapulted him into fame. Recently gaining both admiration and disdain for his artistic take on an offensive editorial in Garage Magazine featuring editor-in-chief Dasha Zhukova. An editorial which many called distasteful and racist, Kargaltsev’s take has many anticipating his future works.
Rosie Holtom> RETnA> Born Marquis Lewis but better known by his art-name RETNA, the Los Angeles based artist through his career has developed a signature “constructed script” for his work which is inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphics, Hebrew, Arabic and also Blackletter. This distinguishing script, which also includes Native American calligraphy, has gained the artist so much praise he has designed art pieces on buildings for Louis Vuitton and also Nike. A combination of varying cultures, RETNA brings about a unity through the cultural ambiguity of his groundbreaking art.
Photographer Rosie Holtom’s designs, animations, and art direction are familiar to most even if her name is not. Holtom did gain wide recognition however after releasing a series of black and white portraits. These portraits weren’t just of anyone however, they were portraits of the homeless inhabitants of a shelter in north London where the photographer volunteers. Shining a new light on the way the homeless are viewed, Holtom’s emotionally moving photographs rebel against stereotypes and bring light to truth.
James De La Vega>
<Robert Mapplethrope Coming of age as an artist in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, Robert Mapplethrope, plunged into black and white photography. Making a name for himself in the art world with highly controversial photos including nudes, BDSM and bondage. Mapplethrope’s sexually charged, homoerotic images rebelled against social norms of the time.
A Harlem native, artist James De La Vega is known predominantly for his inspiring murals and drawings made from sidewalk chalk. Most of his art covers the streets and walls of New York City and contain uplifting, sometimes thought provoking messages, such as his most famous, “Become Your Dream.” Although he has in the past been charged with vandalism for some of his art works De La Vegas art has ultimately proved lucrative and crossed over into fashion leading to a collaboration with Tory Burch in 2011.

KODE: so you’re mostly targeting the hipsters, the trendsetters not the businessmen? Rob: We are definitely working to provide for businessmen, we want to be able to cater to the masses. Right now we have a lot of women shopping for their boyfriends, so we are also working on a women’s line and a kids line. We are constantly growing, trying to target everybody overtime. KODE: Your sister Kendall just modeled for your Arthur George campaign and she just did fashion week for Marc Jacobs, any thoughts on that? You must be very proud. Rob: I’m very proud, she’s been out of town for the last couple months doing photo shoots and meeting people, doing a lot of modeling, and a lot of good stuff. It was very special, it was her first big runway fashion show so of course I gave her my congrats. She’s so young and just killin’ it right now! KODE: How did this idea of a sock line come about, and why did you name it Arthur George? Rob: Well Arthur is my middle name and George is my dad’s middle name. The idea started cause me and my boys would be playing ball, and I’d see that all these kids from the younger generations out playin ball in their dress socks. So eventually a friend of mine who has a manufacturing facility of socks started a company and called it Arthur George. KODE: Did you find it hard to bring Arthur George to life and launch it? Rob: We’ve been around for a good year now, and we still have so much work to do, still ironing out a lot of the things I don’t like, and it’s only getting stronger, I mean I can’t complain for having only been out there for a year. KODE: Whenever you have a new campaign idea do you throw it to your family first to see what they think? Rob: Definitely, if it comes to a label idea or a color, or design I usually get everyone’s input especially if I’m stuck, rather it be via email or have to have something put on their desk I always try to get their opinion. KODE: Usually when it comes to the designing process most brands have a team, does Arthur George operate the same way or is it all you? Rob: We have a really good team, we’ve got people who have years of experience that I pitch ideas to and get a lot of feedback from. The team also does their own thing, and I’ll go back and change it up a little bit. I get inspiration by myself, literally sitting in a hotel look

KODE: Your family is very fashion forward, are there any designers that you admire or that you would like to work with in the future? Rob: There are a lot of collabs with well respected street artists and painters in the works, using their artwork with some socks. And in the future there are going to be some streetwear and fashion companies that we are going to be working with. Right now I’m just trying to perfect all the little things and fix all the things I’m not happy with. KODE: Reality television shows are huge now, we’ve seen a lot of them come and go, what’s the secret of the Kardashian and the Jenner family, what’s makes what makes you stand out? Rob: When it all started reality TV was not as huge, I think people were able to relate to us as a family and could see the difference between what was real and what’s not. I feel like a lot of the people watching have big families and can relate to the struggles we go through. Just being real. KODE: Where can our readers find Arthur George products?
photographer|Nick Saglimbeni Rob: At agsocks.com, you can go there to find men’s, women’s, kids. We’re currently in Nieman Marcus and little boutiques here and there, and in the future we’ll be in Nordstrom and Macy’s and certain Bloomingdales. KODE: Let’s talk more about you, what’s an essential necessity for a guy to have in his wardrobe? Rob: Whenever I’m dressing up I like a solid cardigan, it’s probably my favorite piece of clothing, it just does your outfit good. KODE: What are you doing right now to keep healthy? Rob: Just working out with friends that I’ve known forever. I’m working out every single day, twice a day, eating right, just trying to keep it simple. When I’m on my own I like to go running but besides that I’m doing a lot of circuit training and weight lifting. KODE: You appear to be one of the most genuine people on TV, you don’t seem to try make yourself look bigger than really are, is that something that you want to do or have other people told you that you need to be this way? Rob: Naturally I’m just one of those people that doesn’t care about being in the spotlight or trying to get my opinion across, I’m just a chill laid-back, kind of what happens happens, if it’s good or bad kind of guy. It’s just how my father raised us, he had all the money in the world and could’ve had a huge house and car or whatever he wanted, but he decided to have a normal house in a regular neighborhood with the regular car, I relate it to having a very humble upbringing. KODE: I know you’re the youngest of the Kardashian’s and your sisters are big fashion trend setters, do they ever give you a tip on what to wear or what to do? Rob: Kim and Khloe have their own little opinions, though I feel like they don’t know anything about men’s fashion at all, but Kim did say once I get into better shape that she has a whole fashion idea for me but I don’t know.. maybe if her ways have changed or have gotten better.
KODE: Will you be wearing a kilt anytime soon? Rob: Unless I moved to Scotland, I don’t think so. KODE: Congratulations on Kim and Kanye getting engaged, I know that Kanye is a big big trendsetter, some would even say a fashion icon. With his fashion line doing so great has he offered you any words of wisdom? Rob: He and I will email little ideas back-and-forth, I trust his opinion very highly considering he’s a fashion icon, but I’m trying to figure things out by myself. KODE: So behind the cameras what would you think people would be most surprised to find out about you? Rob: Honestly I don’t know, there’s so much that I don’t put out there, I’m just not the type to have it out there. Even now when I look back I’m surprised by how much I have already put out.. Probably that I’m just down to Earth. KODE: If you could describe Arthur George in one word what would it be? Rob: Comfortable. That’s what 80-90% of people who don’t give a fuck about me and just know the product say to me. I’ve also got plenty of friends who are athletes that wear my socks and all they can tell me is how comfortable they are. KODE: So we’ve heard that you and Scott are coming out with a men’s fashion line, can you comment on that? Rob: Yea! We’re working on that right now. We’re shopping around and trying to get ideas and stuff. We’re doin a cool men’s line, it’ll be at mass, it’s exciting and it should be good! KODE: No fragrances from you any time soon? Rob: no no, not until I lose about 60 lbs and can just wear a pair of white boxers, but that might be too corny for me. By Eddie Guiterrez

Assassinations as·sas·sin noun
1. A murderer, especially one who kills a politically prominent person for financial or monetary reasons. This definition is fundamentally flawed. It’s not often that headlines read “Taliban fly airplane into government building for hefty payoff.” Most political assassins have a quintessential utopia of how life could be with or without the systems that are set in place. Those systems being political leaders and the executive powers that blanket freedom. However corrupt or oppressive a political regime may be I would like to provide myself with a safety net and state my understanding on the seriousness of this topic. The reality is that assassination is murder and around the globe and across history it is a shocking subject. My publication on this subject is strictly recreational. Nonetheless, assassinations throughout history constitute a great deal to the nations that we’ve become today. That being said here are some known and unknown assassinations to occur throughout the course of history: 1. A group of Native Americans from Taos murdered New Mexico Governor Charles Bent in 1847. He was appointed first American governor of the territory after it was conquered by the U.S. Army during the war between the USA and Mexico. 2. State Senator John Stephens, a white Republican, was killed in North Carolina by the local KKK in 1870. Stephens was a “carpet-bagger” who had moved to the southern state after the war, and supported civil rights for freed slaves. The KKK didn’t like that. 3. “I am glad it was me instead of you,” is the phrase engraved on the tomb of Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak, who was shot by Giuseppe Zangara (an Italian-born, unemployed bricklayer) in 1933, while sitting near Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was awaiting inauguration after winning election to the presidency. The president-elect was the target but the mayor received the bullet. Before he died, Mayor Cermak made the statement to Roosevelt that was later written on his tombstone. 4. In 1978, after touring a religious cult’s compound in tropical Guyana, California- Congressman Leo Ryan was killed by gunfire at the airfield as he was preparing to fly back to the USA. The assassins were cult followers of Jim Jones, and all later committed suicide by drinking poison “Kool-Aid”. This incident is where the American slang warning of “don’t drink the Kool-Aid,” originated. 5. Forty-eight year old Harvey Milk, the first gay elected city supervisor of San Francisco was shot & killed by his former supervisor colleague Dan White, who had resigned weeks earlier and was angry that he would not be reinstated to his position. White claimed he was hyper-active and out of control at the time of the shooting because he’d been consuming large amounts of sugary junk food; the so-called “Twinkie defense.” He was convicted.

6. U.S. Senator Huey P. Long was assassinated at the Louisiana state capitol by Dr. Carl Weiss in 1935. Long, who’s memory is still revered by his supporter in Louisiana was considered thoroughly corrupt by his opponents, and a dangerous popular demagogue as well. Weiss was instantly killed by Long’s bodyguards (how many senators had bodyguards in 1935?), leading to conspiracy theories that say Weiss was set up to cover the assassination of Long by other persons. 7. Aztec emperor Moctezuma II was assassinated by his own people in 1520 after they became enraged that European invaders were ruling through their own emperor. While being held captive by the Spanish conquistadors, Moctezuma was asked by the Spanish to speak to the Aztec crowd gathered near his palace in Mexico City, he was struck by rocks and arrows from his subjects and died shortly afterwards. 8. In 1967, George Lincoln Rockwell, founder of the American Nazi Party, was assassinated by his former staff aide, John Patler. Rockwell was shot in the chest at a laundromat. 9. Grigori Rasputin, a religious mystic and personal advisor to the empress of Russia, was assassinated in 1916 by a group of nobles who feared his influence over the royal family. The group of assassins, including Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich, tried several methods the night they killed Rasputin: poison, gunfire, clubbing, and drowning. Less than two years after Rasoutin’s murder, the Russian empire had collapsed and communists began their regime over the Soviet Union. 10. Hendrik Verwoerd, Prime Minister of South Africa and promoter of the official government apartheid policy, was stabbed to death in 1966 inside the National Assembly by Dimitri Tsafendas, a parliamentary messenger opposed to the repressive and racist policy. 11. In 1973, reportedly wearing the trademark Bermuda shorts, Richard Sharples, governor of the British colony of Bermuda, was shot by Buck Burrows and Larry Tacklyn outside the official Government House on the island. The motive for killing the Governor was to seek to make the people, black people in particular, become aware of the evilness and wickedness of the colonialist system in this island. Secondly, the motive was to show that these colonialists were just ordinary people like ourselves who eat, sleep and die just like anybody else and that we need not stand in fear and awe of them. 12. The only Canadian federal politician ever assassinated was Thomas D’Arcy McGee. Supposedly shot by Irish nationalist Patrick Whelan, McGee was murdered in 1868 after helping form the various British colonies in North America into the united Canadian Confederation. 13. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, President of the Dominican Republic , was shot in an ambush in 1961. Widely viewed as corrupt and ruling as a dictator, nobody was surprised when he was assassinated. 14. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, members of the royal family of Austria were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in 1914 while touring Serbia. This murder led to the outbreak of World War One and the deaths of millions of people. 15. “Why didn’t someone just kill Hitler?” This is a common question that’s crossed almost everyone’s mind, when they are reminded of the Nazi regime in Germany. What most people don’t know is that there are OVER 45 documented attempts on Adolf Hitler’s life, 33 were BEFORE the USA ever declared war on Nazi Germany. Most were attempts by Germans themselves, some by his closest military advisors. The famous attaché case bomb explosion at his “Wolf’s Lair” military headquarters killed several other people in the room, yet Hitler shook himself off to discover he was relatively unscathed. This just fed into his belief that he was invincible and had a personal destiny to fulfill. In the end, Hitler assassinated himself when the invading Soviet army was at his doorstep seeking revenge.
Understanding a revolutionist:
Marina Abramovic
The trappings of a typical artist were there: restrictive home life, doomed to fail expectations, and a historic family legacy. “Abramović’s Performance work focuses on the body’s stamina, strength, ability to endure pain and powers of concentration over long periods of time. Her work also follows her family’s code of ethics: the mind and body should be resilient, disciplined and able to endure extreme hardship - testing one’s will to survive.” Marina’s past has become her present. She syphons what once was, through vivid representations of inflamed skin, self affliction, and sexual debt. What could it be that is festering deep down in Marina that requires such drama? The grim reality that was her childhood was spawned from the ruthless nature of her mother. Physical brutality and emotional starvation grew into a self-destructive impulse that she exhibited as art.
A list of her early solo work consisting of repetitive actions lasting for hours: • Rhythm 10, 1973 – She played Russian 5 finger fillet, stabbing between fingers (or at least trying to and sometimes missing) 20 times. • Rhythm 5, 1974 – She stood inside a burning 5 pointed-star and almost died of asphyxiation. • Rhythm 2, 1974 – She took a pill for catatonia that induced uncontrollable movements. • Rhythm 0, 1974 - She allowed the audience to do anything to her using 72 objects on the table, discovering how violent the crowd could be.
...KODE|64
The impulse to transform her body physically through self-mutilation was born. Marina remarks, “To me the pain and the blood are merely means of artistic expression.” Her art features long durational periods of repetitive actions, physical injury (self mutilation included) and inactivity. She has hung naked on a wall, carved into her own stomach with a razor, masturbated in a museum, scrubbed at a pile of bloody, maggoty cow bones in a fetid basement, stood still while strangers willingly put a gun to her head, and survived 12 days of continual pubic surveillance living on platforms in the Sean Kelly gallery sustained only by water. Recent work includes The Life and Death of Marina Abramović, directed by Robert Wilson. The theatrical rendition of Abramović’s biography. She has chosen to star in the piece alongside Willem Dafoe with original music by Antony Hegarty and Serbian singer, Svetlana Spajić. Although the work can be conventionally interpreted as a piece of theatre, in unexpected ways Abramović succeeds in a performance art context. One of her more recent, and most famous forms of long durational work was held at MOMA, Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present. The exhibition was as simple as being present but as daring as subjecting herself to endless vulnerability. She took to sitting for 750 hours permitting anyone to sit silently across from her for the duration of their choosing. It took the form of what Abramović calls “a pared-down, long durational piece that destroys the illusion of time”. The results were surprising, even to her. Several times a day people would break down in tears, typically after only just a few minutes of silent staring. “One big Hell’s Angel with tattoos everywhere stared at me fiercely, but after 10 minutes was collapsing into tears and weeping like a baby.” On the last day the queue reached several thousand individuals long, a man stepped into the circle of light stuck his fingers down his throat and threw up. Marina recognized this as an act of self-expression, a performance within a performance.
By Carrie Shuler
The zone that Marina enters when she performs long durational work is what has defined her as the grandmother of her craft. In the months leading up to the MOMA show she trained with NASA on how to physically and mentally prepare for such a feat of endurance. She became vegetarian, cleansed her body and mind, and learned to eat certain foods to prevent bathroom breaks for up to seven hours. She crafted the ability to sleep in short bursts at night. Her biggest mistake, she recalls, was choosing a wooden chair without armrests. “This one detail makes it hellish. The shoulders sag, the arms swell, the pain starts to increase. I had an incredible amount of physical pain and even some out-ofbody experiences where the pain just vanishes but always it comes back. In the end, it comes down to pure dedication and discipline.” Perplexing are the motives as to why she does it. Why would she subject herself to incessant suffering in the name of art? Abramović hesitantly answers, “On one side is this strict orthodox religion, on the other is communism, and I am this little girl pulled between the two. It makes me who I am. It turns me into the kind of person that Freud would have a field day with, for sure.” Marina Abramović, was born into oppressive rebellion under the dictatorship of Communist Yugoslavia. Her father, General Abramović, a Commander in the Partisan Army, fought against Nazi’s and Nazi-collaborators during World War II. His most memorable act of valiance was saving Marina’s mother, Danica Rosić from the battlefield. With the firm grip of typhus fever constricting her every breath, General Abramović arrived on horseback to defend Danica’s life. Marina recalls, “He loved danger”. You can help get MAI off the ground by spreading the word to family, friends, and by making a financial contribution at mai-hudson.org.
A year later Danica found the General in a field hospital suffering from a wartime injury. She retuned his life by giving blood to the hero that had saved her. Additionally Marina’s great uncle Patriarch Varnava became a national hero after his reestablishment of the Serbian Orthodox Church (1920), which contradicted the all-powerful Roman Catholic Church in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. With a family legacy the likes of which could be pulled from a Jack Higgins novel, how could Marina’s art be tranquil depictions of clouds and still life’s? She has decided to leave a lasting legacy of her own, embarking on what is to be her most ambitious project yet. The creation of the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), an establishment dedicated to “the preservation and presentation of long durational work”. “limitless, free, beautiful and inspiring.” Are the words Lady Gaga uses to describe Marina as an artist and an individual. Gaga’s appreciation for Marina’s work became apparent when she helped produce a series of bizarre videos, in which she appears nude, showcasing Abramović Method- exercises designed to prepare performers to be physically and mentally present during long-durational work. The videos were constructed as a kickstarter campaign to help fund the institutes 2016 forecasted completion. The institute is set to be located in Hudson, New York. Upon entering MAI visitors will be instructed to lock their belongings in safe-boxes prior to slipping into lab coats. Shortly after visitors will be led on a slow motion walk to the Water Drinking Chamber. This chamber offers several containers of water, each containing a mineral of unique properties. They are then instructed to consume the water as slowly and consciously as possible. The Eye Gazing Chamber is next, this chamber is inspired by Marinas The Artist is Present 2010 MOMA performance. A set of chairs, one for human use and one for spirit use are placed to mirror one another in the space. Naturally the next step would be to immerse visitors in an energizing cave of crystals before laying them on levitating meditation beds suspended from the ceiling by magnets. Lastly, visitors then have the opportunity to showcase their highlight performance in the Parking Lot where concave walls await performers in slumber.

Bonnie McKee says it's her turn.
“Mighty is the pen” is a quote that is more than befitting of Ms. Mckee, having helped to craft some of pop phenom Katy Perry’s biggest hits she definitely knows what it’s like to be number 1. Now with her second album on the way and lead single “American Girl” a burgeoning hit in the making, Mckee is ready for her turn in the spotlight.

Kode: Can you introduce us to Bonnie Mckee the artist and not the writer? Bonnie: Hello, I’m Bonnie Mckee, the artist. I never planned on being a song writer for other people, but I accidentally stumbled into some star studded situations and was fortunate enough to find a creative outlet that could hold me over and build steam until I could once again return to the stage and be what I was born to be, a performer. I am fearless and bright, and I hope to inspire and help people with my songs, which are carefully crafted messages disguised as pretty pop songs. Kode: This isn’t your first time attempting the solo route, you’re first album “Trouble” debuted in 2004. What are you doing differently this time around to make sure this project is a success? Bonnie: There is no “making sure” something is a success, there is no certainty in this business. I am more experienced now, and more importantly, a better writer than I was on my first album, which was written entirely by myself at 15 years old. At the end of the day it’s all about having a great song, and a lot of luck! So all I can do is create something that I love and turn the rest over to god. Kode: With your new album rearing and on its way, what can we expect to hear from you? Bonnie: This EP is a very colorful and exciting collection of songs, covering a wide range of emotion- everything from heart break to perseverance to addiction and lust. It’s extremely visual lyrically and so my plan is to make a video for each song, a la ‘Yonce! I’ve always wanted to do this and putting out an EP gives me the opportunity to let every song come to life! Kode: Visually how would you describe your style? What is it that you feel makes you different from other female pop artists? Bonnie: I like to think of myself as a modern day Blondie. Little bit of rock and roll, little bit of glam. I am obsessed with all things 80’s! From the fashion to the movies to the sonicsso you will see and hear a lot of that in this EP! I’m different cuz I’m me, and there is only one me. Kode: Looking at your discography all one can kind of say is “Wow!”. You’ve aided in some of the biggest hits of the past few years with everyone from Katy Perry to Taio Cruz, does that add to the pressure of jumping out on your own? Bonnie: I have been extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with the biggest stars in the world and be a part of pop culture history, and so yes, the bar is very high for me. I’ve been spoiled, I’ve gotten used to being #1 and of course I want that for myself. However I am honestly just so passionate about performing and getting the chance to be an artist that I am humbled to have any audience at all. If I can just touch and inspire one person with the sound of my voice then I feel I’ve accomplished something. I want that number one, but it’s not all just about winning. It’s about enjoying what I do and following my bliss. Kode: Working with some of the biggest names in pop music, what have you learned most from those experiences, and whom would you say you’ve learned the most from? Bonnie: Working with Dr Luke and Max Martin has been the most eye opening thing for me as a songwriter! Learning about song structure and formula that speaks to the masses and balancing that with heart, depth and artistry has made me a better writer. I have spent the most time with Katy Perry and watching her evolve from a coffee house singer songwriter to a power house superstar has been fascinating to watch. And of course she’s always there for me to turn to for advice on popstarism! But I think the most important thing I’ve learned is: you better work, bitch.
Kode: This year you were nominated for your first ever Grammy Award for song of the year alongside Katy Perry for the number 1 song “Roar”, how did that feel? Bonnie: Incredible!! Songs that I’ve written have been nominated for the past 4 years at the Grammys, but the only award that recognizes the songwriter is the “Song of the Year” category. So it was a great honor and girlhood dream come true! Very surreal! Kode: When you look on your career in music what so far are you the most proud of, and what do you think is the key to succeeding in this industry? Bonnie: I’d say Im most proud of my rise from the ashes after the failure of my first album. It was an extremely dark time for me, and I’ve watched a lot of girls pack their bags and buy their one way tickets home in the same situation. Perseverance does pay off, and humility is extremely importantrealizing that you are constantly in danger of losing everything at any moment keeps you working hard, and forces you to evolve and keep striving to be the best you can be. Kode: Now, you’ve written a bevy of songs but which is your favorite? Bonnie: For other people? Teenage Dream. For myself? I have a new song called SLAY I’m pretty psyched about! Kode: The greatest artist’s in history have all left some kind of message and/or legacy, as an artist what is your message and what would you like for your legacy to be? Bonnie: My message is don’t hate! I know it sounds cheesy but I see people waste so much fucking energy hating. Especially women. We should encourage each other to be fearless and confident, not tear each other down. Id like to try to break the cycle of negativity and give everyone permission to love each other. Being catty doesn’t make you bold, it makes you basic. And who wants to be a basic bitch? By: Roshada Powell

(Mi’chele_On_S#!t) spring break
After a long cold winter, spring is finally upon us - but really, who am I kidding, for the past few months I’ve been basking in the sun in Los Angeles. Lunch outdoors, afternoon hikes and beach days are ultimately what my “winter” consisted of, and I do realize for that I am fortunate, but amidst the constant brilliance that is California I am still well aware that with the coming of Spring also comes somewhat of a national holiday - Spring Break, giving the rest of the country a chance to escape to a more desirable climate, if only for a few weeks. Living in Los Angeles my whole life I’ve learned that my perception of Spring Break is different than that of a twenty-something year old living across the country, I am fortunate to have the consistency of 75 degrees and sunny, and yes, I’m spoiled. Perhaps having that as my reality is what has kept me from booking flights to Cancun or driving down to Baja with my closest girlfriends once those two infamous weeks roll around. I remember going with my older sister to see The Real Cancun in theaters when I was 12 and thinking “Oh my God, is this what’s in store for me in the near future? In a few years will my Spring Breaks consist of drunken debauchery on some touristic beach somewhere in Mexico filled with scantly clad young adults and promiscuous sex?” I’ve always had a rebellious streak, but in all honesty those thoughts were unsettling because frankly my laid back Californian upbringing was so far removed from binge drinking on beaches - unless it happened to be on a Friday night under a lifeguard tower in Venice.Once I found myself in college, lets just say that rebellious

steak came out in a different form and being in Cancun or booking a stay at an all-inclusive resort ended up on the very bottom of my list. Instead of rebelling by getting wasted on a random beach with friends and sleeping with guys who’s names I wouldn’t remember, I spent my Spring Break freezing my ass off sipping wine in 24-hour cafes with my sister in New York. I know it sounds crazy to most, choosing a NorthFace over a bikini but I must admit I had a damn good time doing it; picking a corner cafe over a beachside cantina is a testament to my old soul and unorthodox, rebellious ways. Another Spring Break was spent visiting family in New Orleans for two weeks, exploring the city of my roots and eating my Aunt’s delicious creole cooking. I’ve got to say I have never felt as though I was missing out, never wondered what beach parties were commencing, nor did I ever fantasize about the hot guys I would never get to meet; instead I explored cities, read, ate interesting cuisine, all aspects of my various ‘low-key’ trips that I wouldn’t exchange for anything. For every Break that I didn’t go out of town, I was back in L.A. continuing with the rituals of Winter, Fall and Summer, the late lunches, hikes and days at the beach. I don’t know if I’ll ever look back on my college years or early twenties and regret that I decided to go to the MET, stroll through Central Park in the rain, spend a day exploring the French Quarter or to have simply sat on my porch just outside of Hollywood with my nose in a book. I highly doubt I will, but maybe that’s because we Californian’s are cut from a different cloth, one that’s 75 and Sunny.

NENE LEAKES> (The_Real_Housewives_of_Atlanta)
Born Linnethia Monique Johnson and originally from Queens, New York, this former-stripper-turned-”Housewife Queen” stole the show when she made her first appearance on The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2008. Known for her audacious actions, brash tongue, and boisterous personality; she has participated in countless hostile altercations with fellow cast members through the seasons. Leakes has not only made a name for herself on the show but has taken on additional ventures, such as co-writing the book “Never Make the Same Mistake Twice: Lessons on Love and Life Learned the Hard Way” and landing a reccurring role on the now scrapped NBC sitcom “The New Normal”.
ABBEY LEE MILLER> (Dance_Moms)
Owner and chief choreographer of the Abbey Lee Dance Company, Abbey Lee Miller—the leading force behind Lifetime’s reality hit Dance Moms—is known more for her harsh and blunt criticisms of the young girls enrolled in her dance school and her extreme confrontations with their overbearing stage mothers than she is for her choreography. Miller, who is currently involved in a trial with the mother of a former dancer at her studio, has—in only two seasons— sparked controversy by commenting on the weight of a young dancer and choosing what some would call inappropriate costumes for her dancers. Regardless of the criticism, Miller is unapologetic and viewers love her.

This millionaire “Duck Commander” reality star took TV’s all over America by storm when he and his duck-hunting southern family, along with A&E, introduced us to the reality series Duck Dynasty. The main character in one of the most-watched cable series in history, Robertson and his devout-Christian ways got him into trouble with not only the network, but with watchers of the show after defaming homosexuals in an interview with GQ. The part-time preacher, hunter, and businessman proved himself a rebel for filter he’s obviously lacking.

A rebel in a different way then the others, Kendall Jenner is a rebel we love—a reality television fashion rebel. As the newly-legal second youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner Clan, Kendall has come a long way from the 11-year-old introduced to us on the first season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians in the fall of 2007. After more than eight seasons of being constantly filmed with her family, the young model is now making waves seperately from them. Most notably, she walked the runway for Marc Jacobs during New York Fashion Week and Givenchy during Paris Fashion Week as well as sat front row at London Fashion week with Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, for which she later did some modelling.

>
GORDON RAMSAY> (Master_Chef)
Restaurateur and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has also made a career of entertaining viewers and scaring the hell out of contestants as the host of various cooking-competition reality shows. Known widely for his shows Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay now serves as a judge on Fox’s Master Chef and Master Chef Junior. Known for being a badass in the kitchen, habitual screamer, and all-around tough ass; the world-renowned Chef is a force to be reckoned with in the world of reality television. We first met the sixteen-year-old pregnant high school cheerleader Farrah Abraham in 2009 when she shared her somber story with the world on MTV’s controversial reality-drama series 16 and Pregnant. Following 16 and Pregnant, Abraham joined the cast of the network’s spinoff reality series Teen Mom, offering a deeper look into the lives of new teen mothers. Abraham became widely known due to the show. Her fame spread, however, in May of last year when the now22-year-old released a sex tape through top porn producer Vivid Entertainment alongside (and underneath) porn star James Deen. When confronted about the explicit video, the ex-teen mom (16_and_Pregnant_&_Teen_Mom) claimed she did it not only for the paycheck, but also to “celebrate [her] awesome body.” Now, as cast member on the new season of VH1’s show Couples Therapy, it’s become even more apparent that Farrah is the same rebellious girl she was in her teens.
<
FARRAH ABRAHAM
This fish-lipped, big-breasted East Coast native and relative to the Genovese crime family with a gruff voice and appealing personality can be seen on the Mafia-connected reality series Mob Wives. As somewhat of a newbie to the show, Ang has gained so much media attention that she is now the star of her own spinoff show Miami Monkey on VH1, based on the bar she owns in South Beach.
<BIG ANG (Mob_Wives)
Premiering on the Oxygen network in the winter of 2006, it was apparent from the first episode that this outlandish show was reality television at its worst—or should we say finest? Set in rented mansions around the country, the show revolves around seven girls per season. Women of varying backgrounds fight each other during the day, get wasted together at night, and fight each other again before the night is over just to fall asleep and wake up in the morning (with a hangover) to do it all again. With numerous controversies throughout the past 12 seasons, the entire cast of this crazy show deserves the title of Reality Show Rebels.
TERESA & JOE GIUDICE> (The_Real_Housewives_of_New_Jersey)
Teresa is the second-highest paid cast member of The Real Housewives franchise thanks to her standout role on the New Jersey series. Therefore, it might come as a surprise to many that the Jersey native and her husband, Joe, have not only filed for bankruptcy since signing onto the show, but are currently facing federal charges of bank, wire, and mail fraud along with conspiracy and failure to file tax returns for specified years. The couple is facing more than 50 years in prison and over $500,000 in fines if convicted. These two reserve the right to be Rebels! With the 16 and Pregnant spinoff Teen Mom being such a hit, MTV premiered the spinoff of that series and fittingly titled it Teen Mom 2. Since we had met Jenelle Evans as a pregnant teen months prior—during her episode of 16 and Pregnant—and had become accustomed to her rebellious ways, nothing would have prepared us for her actions in the last fifth season of Teen Mom 2. After signing over custody of her son, Jace, to her mother, Evans has been arrested numerous times, served time in jail, become addicted to heroin, and been pregnant twice.

Each season this show likes to show up and show out. The actors are always a really great group who continuously show us their talents. The newest season was called “Coven” for those of you who don’t watch the show, and it was about a southern style witch coven who thrives in the 21st century. A supreme is the leader on a witch coven, who dubs her witches to wear black on Wednesdays. I’m in.
(Jared_Leto) Recently the man of many talents has played a role that awarded him Golden Globe Glory. Winning best supporting actor in Dallas Buyers Club, Leto plays a transgender nomad suffering from AIDS. Struggling with identity within her own family the character is the perfect foil off, Ron, played by Matthew McConaughey. A role like that takes physical and mental preparation for months in order to achieve method acting. If you’re looking for a great new film, I wouldn’t have written this if I wasn’t OBSESSED.

to a + Tricks kickass springbreak destination Where are you going? If you don’t have a plan by the beginning of February, rates for hotels, airfare and any rentals will be through the roof. Planning the best Spring Break is about timing, budget and duration. We tend to lean more towards a tropical choice in order to finally break free of our winter weather. Popular choices: Miami, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cancun or Hawaii.
Mopeds/Vespas/Segways Today, renting a small transport in a tropical destination is very common to do. Some like to keep the vehicles in the water; boats, jetskis, or even hovercrafts. Bar hopping is always enjoyable and getting from place to place on foot is so 1999. Renting a moped or Vespa for the week is a great solution to a speedy and successful bar hop; please drink responsibly.
wardeobe
How can you even think about embarking on a huge vacation without the proper attire? At this point you better be packing flipflops, swimsuits, tank tops, light throw-overs, shorts and sun screen. In the hot weather you need to be prepared for dehydration from drinking and overheating as well. Spending time in the water, your body absorbs the salts which, with drinking, can cause you to get sick. Drink lots of water.

group rates
Make sure to round up a group of your friends to not only save you money, but to make the experience more action packed. Splitting rooms, bar tabs, taxis or rental cars and even food can make your trip more inexpensive. This time of year is filled with group rate discounts and taking advantage will allow you to have more spending money in your pocket.
volunteer
Try giving back by volunteering, you and your friends, for a day or few hours, giving back to the community that you are visiting can be fun, rewarding and give you a story to tell when you and your friends give back. If you’re a college student on vacation, many destinations have volunteer centers for college kids to gain access to credits. Having fun doesn’t always mean getting wasted.
Adventure
Use this opportunity to explore unfamiliar surroundings. Find a local trai to hike or even under water scuba diving, maybe take that Vespa you rented to visit local attractions and monuments. Taking a day to enjoy your destination is important, if your going is to be a sloppy mess for 6 days, at least give one day to enjoy your vacation and have something to fully remember.

Joan_Burstein It’s debatable whether Scott Lipps is one of the most critical men in fashion. No, he’s not a designer, fashion director or stylist but without him the ones filling those specific roles would no doubt be lost. Founder and CEO of one of the most prominent model agencies in the world, One Management, Lipps got his start in L.A.’s rock music scene of the late 1980’s and early 90’s where he discovered his niche for management while touring with bands. Following his work for NEXT Model Management, Lipps served as president of Karin Models for 4 years before beginning one. Commanding as one of the go-to agencies for the past 13 years, one represents some of the top supermodels in the business including Karolina Kurkova and Helena Christensen. Shayne Oliver is what some might call a diamond in the rough, as a designer for the now infamous clothing line Hood By Air (HBA) and one half of New York based DJ duo - with his partner Venus X - GHE20G0TH1K, Oliver and his career would not be where they are today if he did not rebel against conventions. Finding his inspirations for his music and designs in deconstruction and recreation, innovation is his stronghold. Crossing barriers of gender, ethnicity and age Oliver and his collective are setting a precedence, gaining momentum for a further ascension into prominence in fashion, art and music.

Also known as Mrs. B - Joan is recognized for the daring and intuitive choices she’s made when selecting collections and pieces into Browns, a London based boutique Founded in 1970 by Joan and Sidney Burstein which has over the past four decades become one of the most influential fashion boutiques in the world. The charming, humble and fashionable Mrs. B, who’s keen eye also brought Comme des Garcons to London in the early 1980’s, is a fashion rebel in her own right due to her delight in taking risks. anthony fr anco Kode: What is your philosophy as a designer? Anthony: My philosophy is to always keep my designs classic. I use fabrics and laces that are usually custom-made for me, and if it’s a print, I really love to make it be the theme behind the collections inspiration. I love the 1930’s, so I am always referring to the era’s beadwork and silhouette. Kode: What made you want to begin a career in design? Anthony: I started to design for music videos in the 80s when there were no H&M’s, and Tom Ford had not yet started creative directing for Gucci. The times were all about being creative. Now that has all changed and when you find yourself as a stylist competing for the same dresses or not being able to find what you need, you start thinking – I need to do my own brand. I was designing for the Cotton Campaign Commercials and I asked them to sponsor me for my first show Spring 2011. Kode: What advise would you hand to anyone looking to begin a design career? Anthony: I can only say to a new designer. Have a vision – don’t be a dressmaker. It’s not about being able to make one dress; it’s about being able to show someone your dreams.

Kode: Los Angeles seems to be struggling to find its footing within the fashion community; do you ever see it finding a place among the respected fashion weeks around the world? Anthony: I am constantly asked this question. We have the most wonderful talented people in the business, but we can’t get the fashion right. It is an industry that has a lot of people that think they can, and not a lot of people that have something to really say. I know so many talented people, but it takes a lot of money and patience to succeed, it’s nothing that happens over night. So the fashion industry won’t happen over night in Los Angeles. Like anything great, it takes time. Kode: Now your designs have appeared on lots of big names, who would you say was your favorite? And who’s still on your wish list? Anthony: I will always have a huge place in my heart for Outkast. Designing for Andre & Big Boi was some of the greatest times in my life! I love classic and passionate people, and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are two people I love for my fashion favorites.
Kode: How and where do you wish to expand the Anthony Franco brand in terms of merchandise and marketing? Anthony: As far as my brand I am blessed to be able to produce a collection every season. When it comes to my business I hope to find the perfect investor – someone who wants to make a design house that follows the Valentino or Prada Brand.
Kode: In a crowded arena of designers how do you plan for Anthony Franco to stand out? Anthony: There are plenty of designers out there – I have been in this business of styling and fashion for almost 27 years, my idea of standing out is being able to keep the passion going and to have the strength and ideas to keep me going. Till I decide to stop, not told to stop.

So we have lots of new projects in the works.....you’ll have to follow us @stylehouse13 to get the scoop!! Kode: Who is your favorite band, musician, or singers? Shaina: Right now Bebe Rexha. She’s a new artist I’m working with and just an incredibly talented and inspiring person. I love her to death. Kode: What trend would you most like to see disappear? Shaina: Beach waves. BORING!!!

My sewing skills need to catch up with my imagination. Anyone out there want to be my mentor? Kode: Who inspires you the most? Shaina: Random people with amazing individual style. One of the many reasons I love LA! Kode: Whose closet would you love to raid? Shaina: I dream of meeting a wonderful rich old lady who has decades of fashions in her closet....she’ll tell me stories of her socialite days while we play dress up in jumpsuits from Studio 54, Edie Sedgwick inspired furs, piles of costume jewelry. Chris "Drama" Pfaff Kode: What can you tell the Kode reader about yourself, introduce us to Chris “Drama” Pfaff? Drama: I’m a guy from Akrin, Ohio. I moved to Los Angeles really just to find opportunity, more so than anything. I would like to say that most of all I’m probably best at finding opportunities and taking advantage of them. Since then I’ve starred and costarred in two MTV shows and started a clothing line called Young and Reckless.
Kode: How would you describe your personal style? Drama: Personal style, I would say a little street wear-y but slightly more, what’s the word, I wouldn’t say with a fashion element but a little bit more mature, I guess. Like mature street wear. You know, like I don’t wear the baggy crazy clothes anymore or the New Era hats like I use to. I’ve matured. Kode: You actually got your start as your cousin Rob Dyrdek’s assistant on Rob & Big, how did you transition from walking his dog to becoming a multimillionaire fashion mogul? Drama: Really, I think most importantly I got a great education from working with him, that’s probably the most valuable thing that I learned or got from him. Coming from Ohio, you obviously have no idea how the industry works or how to go about building a business or any of that stuff, so really, just from working for him I was able to watch a lot of what he does. My goal was never to be an assistant for life by any means, it was simply kind of a way to get my foot in the door and a way to learn. I really just took a lot of notes and saw how he did, and then when I felt like the time was right I just went
...KODE|102
for it. It was still a little risky but I stopped working for him and I took what I learned and tried to just do it just as good or better. Kode: Do you ever ask your assistant to do any of the crazy things that Rob use to ask you to do? Drama: Not too much, he has it pretty easy. I would say that I’m a little hard on him probably you know, because I had to do a lot of stuff, and I don’t know, I guess I just kinda set a president for what hard really is. But as far as the weird, crazy things, not so much because most of that was because we were filming the TV show because we knew it would be good for TV so really, you know, unfortunately in our dayto-day lives we don’t go hunting for danger or for weird situations. Yeah he’s had it pretty easy all in all. Kode: What’s the story behind Young and Reckless, how exactly did the whole concept come about? Drama: Really what it came from was that I always had an interest in clothing, and from doing the TV show, really just from doing Rob & Big. I just learned quickly how good of a marketing vehicle MTV was, if you used it properly, so like I said I was on Rob & Big and I was working for Rob and whatever and obviously I didn’t want to be an assistant for life so not long after I stopped working for Rob and not long after Rob & Big is when we started filming the Fantasy Factory. So really what happened was I just realized that if I was ever gonna do a clothing line that I just had to dive in and try to figure it out right away because I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass of having that MTV show to tie
it into so I really just dove into it and learned everything from getting the trademarks, to getting the clothes made, to the designers and marketing and all of that stuff. I really just pieced it together, I mean, we’re about 5 years in now and I’m still putting pieces together and still building and still learning new stuff everyday. I just went for it you know, and really my motivation behind it was once again growing up in Ohio and moving to LA knowing that there wasn’t much cool stuff available to mainstream America. All the cool stuff was kind of reserved and exclusive to these big cities and too hard to get a hold of so my goal was to create a brand with some life to it, and a brand message, and still some exclusivity to it but something that was accessible in malls and accessible to kids in Ohio because I have a soft spot for those people. That’s the void that I try to fill and kind of the reason why I did it when I did. Kode: Yeah, you always hear about trends being hot in LA and then finally getting to the rest of the parts of the US months and months later. Drama: Yeah, I don’t take credit for this by any means but if you noticed, but I’ve obviously had this conversation with the other street wear guys. Stuff out here in LA and now all of those street brands that were once exclusive and impossible to get are selling in places like PacSun, I don’t think that I was responsible for it but I do think I helped show that you can do it, that you can sell to these bigger stores and sell to the mainstream but still keep a cool element to your brand and still have people in LA lining up to get a T-shirt or something. It’s possible, difficult but it’s possible.
Kode: How did the name Young & Reckless come about and was there another name that you guys were deciding between when you decided to start the line? Drama: Well, originally I was selling shirts off of PayPal or something, and all they said were “DramaBeats” on them because that was my nickname. So I did that and what happened was the next step, I was like ok I want to turn this into a real company. Unfortunately, I’m embarrassed to admit this and I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this but the first name was “Vanity.” I was like “ok, yeah I’m gonna call it ‘Vanity’ and it’s gonna be a brand”, which was obviously a horrible decision. Thank God I didn’t follow through with that, so that was my first name, and I quickly realized that sucked. The main thing was that I wanted to create a brand and a lifestyle and a message, something that kids could believe in opposed to just calling it some random name and trying to build it that way. Young & Reckless just came to me, I don’t know why it came to my head but it just flowed right to me. I remember a month long period where I was like just writing down names everyday and just staring at them and Young & Reckless was what I settled on. I really wanted it to represent the mentality that I believe in which is living outside the box and breaking the mold and doing things your own way. So that’s where I settled, I knew the logo Y&R would work, I thought the name was cool and I knew I could incorporate a message and not just try to have the coolest hoodie in the world. I wanted to be deeper than that. Kode: When you first started Y&R was it hard finding support? Who was the most instrumental in helping you get your first big break? Drama: Yeah, it was really hard. Honestly at the time, I was 22 years old. I didn’t know anything about clothes. Well, I mean the actual business of clothing, and contrary to popular belief, and not that I blame him for this and I’m actually very thankful that it went this way, but Rob didn’t really believe in it either or didn’t have the time. You know, because he had other companies and he had other clothing companies so it was kind of a conflict. I was kinda like “Okay, if you want to start a clothing line then you should go start a clothing line.” At the time I was lost but I am thankful that he did that because that forced me to go learn. What I did is I had a bunch of meetings, educated myself, talked to as many people as I could, and really tried to learn how the business goes and what the best move was for me. I partnered up with guys out here [in Los Angeles] that had been doing clothing for 10+ years, and they were the ones who really helped me get the manufacturing, distribution and all of the stuff together right away because I didn’t have much time to waste while we were filming the show. Those guys were very helpful, I owe a lot to them and it’s funny because everyone always says “Oh, you owe everything to Rob” and don’t get me wrong I owe him a lot but what’s funny is that there are these guys that are still my partners ‘til this day that nobody’s ever heard of and I actually owe them a lot. They know that and they know how thankful I am and we actually went on to build a great business together so I would say they were the main ones who really got this thing up and running from day one. Kode: Y&R and street wear itself is now considered a complete lifestyle, how would you describe the target Young & Reckless consumer? Who are you designing for? Drama: Our main target is men, probably 16-24. And I don’t think that he is necessarily a diehard skateboarder, doesn’t have to necessarily be a diehard athlete, motocross, nothing. The thing I like about Young & Reckless is that it can kind of tie everyone together and that’s why I’ve never went too hard in skateboard or in sports or anything because I don’t want to pigeonhole Young & Reckless into doing one thing. So I think it’s that kid who obviously doesn’t want to wear Abercrombie or doesn’t want to wear American Eagle or is probably sick of Billabong and Hurley. I think that there’s a kid there, well I know there’s a kid there that doesn’t like any of those things, those things aren’t necessarily for him and maybe you’re not a hardcore skateboarder, so you don’t know the hardcore skateboard brands, that to me is who my target is. It’s the kid that thinks Hurley and Billabong are boring, it’s the kid who thinks Abercrombie and American Eagle are corny, but is looking for something with substance to it instead of wearing Hanes white T-shirts. And obviously we do a lot of marketing with rappers and all I can really do is market to the world that I partake in, I love rap music. Everything that we do comes from me and my close circle around me truly liking it. That’s how you build a brand as far as I’m concerned. So, there is a heavy
103|KODE...
rap music marketing influence. But to me that’s what it is, it’s that kid that kind of lives in that middle ground. Kode: Speaking about your collaborations, you and Cassie just did a collaboration titled “En-Why 2 El-Aye.” How exactly did that collaboration start and what does that name mean? And as a street wear brand do you think you’ve gained a new fan base through Cassie? Drama: That came about because she and I had mutual friends. I have always been a fan of hers, she’s amazingly good looking and her fashion, I love the way that she dresses. I love the fact that she’s not super urban but she doesn’t go super high fashioned. She’s able to kinda live in that world and she’s able to wear a T-shirt and Jordan’s and not look like a dude. She just has a niche that I’m a really big fan of. I’ve been a fan of her style for a long time so to me that was something really important, I mean obviously we’re a clothing brand, we’re not a record label so style is what we’re trying to support. It came up that it was a potential opportunity and we explored it, her and I got along really well, we kind of were on the same page of what we wanted to make. It was real important to me that she was super instrumental in actually designing, giving us her inspiration and being hands on with it, and it just worked out. Like I said, we got along really well, we both really had the same vision and it made sense and we just went for it. The En-Why 2 El-Aye thing was because she actually lives in LA now but she spent years in New York, we were trying to base this thing off of a city and said “Well, I can’t really choose, you know I love both for different reasons.” So for us we saw that as the perfect opportunity, because a lot of our marketing has been LA based, a lot of our shirts say “Los Angeles Reckless” with a heavy Los Angeles presence but there’s not much New York so it was a great opportunity to not say “Cassie Los Angeles” or “Cassie New York” but LA and New York were her two homes and the collection kind of is nationwide if you will. Kode: Any advice to those out there thinking of starting their own brand? How does a young street wear brand cement themselves into consciousness and reach the level of recognition as you’ve done with Y&R? Drama: Yeah, I would say on one hand it’s insanely hard, and on the other hand it’s easier now than it’s ever been. The barrier of entry to this industry is lower than it’s ever been and somewhat nonexistent because of social media. Now, obviously there is some money involved that you need to get started and blah, blah, blah but you know you could always find people to put money into it if you hustle hard enough. If you go for it you can figure out how to get over those humps. I would say the biggest thing is A, be prepared to educate yourself, be prepared to be a student and be prepared to spend years with no social life just figuring out how to make it happen. That’s guaranteed. You’re going to have to sacrifice that. Second piece of advice is to do it for a reason, if you don’t have a reason of why your clothing is different or what your brand stands for you might as well not do it. Because there’s gonna be some very tough days and there’s gonna be some times when you’re trying to do marketing and whatever and you don’t have a reason. If you don’t have a reason and you don’t have a direction and you don’t have a brand or a business plan, you’re gonna be dead in the water. So to wrap things up the two things are be prepared to work and be prepared at any given time to answer the question why, what does the brand mean? Why are you doing it? Why does anyone care? Kode: What’s next for Young and Reckless, any upcoming collaboration’s we can get a hint at? Drama: You know we have a lot, nothing that I can quite say yet. We just did a big thing with Nipsey Hustle, the rapper out here in LA. He’s an LA rapper from Crenshaw so that was a big thing for LA. But we have a few more collaborations with some artists, like painting artists as well as some pretty big musicians. I can’t give away names yet but it will be bigger than anything we’ve done yet and I really think this year we’re gonna do a lot to continue to solidify the brand, to show people that we’re here for the long haul. We can do very solid marketing rollouts and the product is going to continue to get better and better. I really think that by the end of this year even, people’s perception of the brand will be much more respected, and add much more depth, more than it has now I think.

Kode: What can fans expect from your highly anticipated new album “Dreams Worth More Than Money”? Meek: I’m really taking my time on this album and making a next level album. This is some of the best music I’ve ever made in my life. Kode: What advice do you have for someone who is trying to chase his or her dreams? Meek: Stay focused. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. If I can make it, so can you. Kode: Aside from your new album, what else do you have on the horizon for 2014? Meek: I can’t talk on it much, but I have a deal with Puma, we working on a shoe together. I have my 24K Gold Monster headphones, and I’m also working on my new clothing line, but that’s really in the early stages. Kode: We know Ross is strategic with the choosing the artists on the MMG roster. As one of the first members of MMG, what do you believe you bring to the team? Meek: Philly! [laughs] Kode: With your new album being so highly anticipated, do you feel any pressure to make sure that this album not only meets the standards of your debut album, but surpasses all expectations and is better than the last? Meek: There’s good pressure, it makes me work harder and make the best album I can make. I already know that this album is bigger than the first. I’ve lived so much since. By: Roshada Powell

5.Corneal Tattooing: Get ready to cringe because this tattooing occurs in the most uncommon of areas. Corneal tattooing is the process of tattooing the cornea (white of your eye) any color that is chosen. Since the late 90’s the procedure has been done over 2,000 times, but the problem is, it’s not permanent. If you liked it the first time, get ready for more than one procedure. 6.Scarification: Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds. This process to some will make you question ones sanity, to others it is a form of art. This involved scratching, etching, burning or branding of the skin in patterned or pictured ways to cause the skin to scar over for tasteful purposes. The process is done in certain context in order to have the wound scar more or less depending on the piece. 7.3D-Art Implants: This is the process in which a sub-dermal implant is placed under the skin to either accent a tattoo or cause a mutation in the sculpture of the skin. Just like a piercing, an implant can be stretched; ex: Small horns to larger horns. 8.3D-Art Implants: This is the process in which a sub-dermal implant is placed under the skin to either accent a tattoo or cause a mutation in the sculpture of the skin. Just like a piercing, an implant can be stretched; ex: Small horns to larger horns. 9.Corset Piercings: Modifications like this are usually found on females, but to each their own if a male tried it as well. A corset piercing is a series of rings pierced in corset fashion that are usually threaded and twined with ribbon. Most common places have been seen down the back, down the chest, or mini ones on the legs. 10.Branding: Similar to scarification, branding is the process of using a hot iron or heat pen is placed on the skin to cause 3rd degree burns. These burns can be small or large depending on the piece. A lot of time this type of modification can have a hard time healing due to the nature of the skin or wound.
1.Bagel Head: This type of body modification originated in Canada by pioneer Jerome Abramovitch who first tested out the experimental modification back in 2006. In 2007 a Japanese fetish explorer, Keroppy Maeda, brought the modification back to Japan where it then took off as a trend. A bagel head is when 300-400cc of medical-grade saline solution is injected into the forehead over a period of 2 hours and then given a depression in the center to resemble a donut or bagel. The modification can last up to 6-24 hours where the saline will absorb into the body. 2.Prince Albert (PA):The
Prince Albert is the most common piercing among male genitalia. More commonly seen as a full ring and a half ring, this piercing extends along the underside of the urethral opening where the gland meets the shaft and exits through a hole pierced at the top of the glands.
3.Frenum Piercing (Jacobs Ladder):
A body piercing located along the under shaft of the male genitalia, this piercing can either be seen as a bar or ring depending on the owners preference. Multiple frenum piercings are known as Frenum Ladder or Jacob’s ladder. This piercing is ranked second most popular male genital piercing, right after the Prince Albert (PA)
4.Tongue Bifurcation (Forking/Splitting): This modification is when the tongue
is cut in half from the tip to its underside base, causing the tongue to split into a snake-like fork. Ever since the middle to late 90’s this modification was unheard of but in today’s time it’s becoming more and more popular. The best part about this modification is that after healing, the muscles in the tongue can be separately operated as if you had two tongues.

Comme Des Garcons
Yohji Yamamoto has made a household name over the past 30 years as one of the pioneers of the deconstruction age which emerged in high fashion in the early 90’s. Classic Yamamoto apparel is relaxed, with wide silhouettes, and intricate textile manipulation while having lasting durability, making the wearer stylish yet not preening, and it’s not just his clothes that appeal, it’s him: his demeanor, his focus, his talent and most of all his vision and depiction of the world and how we should dress as we inhabit it. His latest collection shown in Paris was a multitude and mismatch of bold prints and couture like techniques, all things we’ve come to long expect from one of the biggest and longest lasting bad asses in the fashion industry.

L A Sportsw e a r Designer Rik Villa has capitalized on todays trends running ramped like most wish they could with mesmerizing graphics, innovative silhouettes and dye techniques. Villa’s made a new purpose for the bandanna transforming them into simple yet deceiving cut shorts and oversized shirts, the collection he’s made uses bandanas as the basis and point of departure for heavy street wear looks. They’re appealing and interesting because they are a lot more complex than tying a bandana around your chest or adding it onto a shirt. Villa uses the iconic bandana pattern as the center of the design, relying on the lines and shapes embedded in the pattern to structure items like a Bowling Shirt and a pair of Long Pants. Rik has now ventured of into the land of the QR code and has even brought about 3D elements into his design. There is a delicate line to walk in making clothes like this for, as many know it can easily become an unappealing gimmick verging on cheesy.
While taking over the fashion house in 2005, Ricardo Tisci has revolutionized and revitalized the brand; and geared it toward the modern day fashion rebel. Givenchy camouflage or a staple flower print, stripes, stars, warped and culturally infused and manipulated graphics, Tisci has single handedly brought street culture to the high fashion realm, and now has the entire world of fashion chasing his heels. From look books and runway set design to model casting, the aesthetic of his latest collection inspired by his passion for basketball and his newest collaboration with Nike for Air Force 1’s exemplifies the badass things that only badass brands can accomplish. Inspired by modern minimalism, Neil Barrett’s Spring collection has clean, simple looks and lets the prints and overall design speak. Throughout, you see the schoolboy essence with high socks, shorts, and dress shoes. This gave the clean minimalist looks a bit more of an edge. For a brand gaining steam, it was definitely another drop in the mainstream bucket.

Band Of Outsiders is a still somewhat up-and-coming sportswear brand, but it is taking major leaps towards superstardom. Band goes for an out-ofthe-ordinary presentation for Spring, which showcases their contemporary looks along with their slim, fashion-tailored suiting. The use of the dipdyed denim (jacket, shirt, and pants) gives the contemporary, easy look.
(BAND_OF _OUTSIDERS) (Custo_ Barcelona) Brands such as Custo can get stocked heavy with brand equity from a long and storied career. It seems as though this great has finally awoken from its slumber. Spring is more subdued compared to other Custo collections—a good mix of soft, feminine with conceptual printed pieces, it gives a tribal, send-me-on-vacation feel.
Say yes to sheer! Feathers and embroidery are nice, too. This black and white collection gives feminine silhouettes and feminine detailing. The sheer is sexy, yet modest. Effortlessly cool.

L.A.M.B.—a staple upon launch in 2003—has just now seemed to regain steam. Spring brought bright colors and fun prints with easy-to-wear pieces. The collection was adorned with flowing silhouettes, ruffles to the zipper, and a subtle utilitarian essence along with classic moto-style jackets.
(L.A.M.B.) (Haider Ackermann) Masculine and sexy all at the same time, Haider Ackermann still doesn’t receive the acclaim he so greatly deserves. Spring gave us a dark, sexy look that brought in metallic and sheer wider cut silhouettes. Many of his now classic menswear-inspired pieces pulled together with elements of femininity made the collection a true highlight.
Punk’s not dead... God Save the Queen. Libertine brought out punk-meets-pretty and lifted the brand to a whole new echelon. Jewel-toned prints, bright colors, and pop art style prints made for a fun and exciting, yet sophisticated, show giving an ultra punk-chic bravado.

Smashing with a mash between Heathers and Interview with A Vampire, Viktor & Rolf showed that they are not to be underestimated. Having been around since the early 90’s, they still haven’t received the recognition truly deserved of their ready-to-wear line. Spring ’14’s preparatory inspiration of an edgy Goth twist invigorated new energy. With exaggerated pleats and the one shoulder prep school blazer, Viktor & Rolf are proving it’s not a faux pas to rock the school uniform look. With couture techniques and continuously innovative designs, their effect on the industry is transcendent from season to season.

“She’s here, She’s here,” The room whispered as the fiery red head and her team of six comes flashing through the front door of the studio and straight into the wardrobe room ready to shoot the cover for the first issue of the newly re-launched Kode Magazine. The shoot was already running four hours behind schedule after two last minute location changes. Miss Lohan who’s arrived hair and makeup ready is all smiles as she meets the Kode team, introducing herself to everyone in her vicinity with a simple, “Hi I’m Lindsay.” Lohan’s demeanor is very present and genuine and she radiates positive energy. She immediately scrambles for a music playing device. She beckons for her assistant, Matt Harrell, who’s suited up in his now infamous three piece suit which is seen in every installment of “Lindsay” on OWN. The photographer hands her an auxiliary cord and the next voice we hear is that of Miguel signing his most recent tune “Simple Things.” Everyone agrees it’s an amazing song. As everyone hums and dances along to the music, she’s walked through wardrobe from clothing to shoes to accessories. She’s in love with everything fawning over the Dora Abodi and Rad Hourani look she dons on the cover. Lohan seemed distracted at first. Whether it was by the blaring music or her entourage it’s unclear, I begin to see the nucleolus of the distraction, which is inherently herself. Lohan is something of a butterfly beautiful in sight but complicated and sporadic in nature. There is an art in her movement fluttering from flower to flower with no apparent pattern discernable to anyone but herself. The next months spent off and on with Lindsay would unravel in the same fashion of chaos as we bonded over our love of McDonalds and Celine. Once America’s reigning sweetheart, Lohan is officially on her last leg. She is slightly unaware, as she states, “I’m not doing that shit.” This was a reference to a scripted Arsenio Hall segment planned for the next day. Lohan’s friend and I sit with her in a Beverly Hills Hotel suite the day after the cover shoot. No longer in trouble with the law and ending a chapter in her most recent trip to rehab, Lohan is in over drive promoting her current project “Lindsay” backed by the one and only Oprah Winfrey. She seems to be in great spirits and in good health. She describes a recent spiritually enlightening experience of an Ayahuasca and a new calming technique taught to her by mentor Oprah, which involves the reciting of “Peace Begins Within Me” as you tap your index, middle, ring, and little finger to your thumb one by one. When speaking of Oprah, Lohan has nothing but glowing qualms of the talk show queen “She’s taught me so much and really believes in me, nothing like Barbra Walters,” she confesses as she takes a sip from her freshly topped off glass of Vodka on the rocks. From this moment, all questions of sobriety seem irrelevant. From there, the conversation turns to the current state of Hollywood and the recent Oscar awards. As I gush over my love of Jared Letto, she immediately bites back with claims of a sordid love affair with the statue winner. “All my friends, love Jared, we’ve been off and on for years,” she affirms. My curiosity get’s the best of me and I blurt out “I bet he’s great in bed” and she swiftly responds “Oh Yeah!” Just like that she saunters off into the opposite side of the room as the conversation then moves to America’s current sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence. Her feeling towards her infamous stumble at the ceremony’s red carpet is pretty evident.
“She’s so fake and I’m sorry I’m not going to fuck for roles.” After the initial shock of the jarring comment, we then trail to the interesting Dior frock Lawrence donned for the ceremony, which lead us over to Lawrence’s very public stylist Rachel Zoe who was once Lindsay’s style maven. “She stole a lot of my shit, designers would send me stuff and she would just keep it. That’s shady.” A conversation with Lindsay can quickly turn into a who’s who in Hollywood and in what way they‘ve wronged her, and the portrait of the angelic red haired creature before you morphs to a sly fox with intriguing motives. The next thing we know, she begins to franticly prepare for a dinner meeting with a director in which she’s already an hour late. The next time Lindsay and our paths cross she is chaotically attempting to pack her life away to jet back to NY. When I arrive, once again, at her hotel there’s a party of six including her brother and assistant. Most are helping her frantically pack the numerous suitcases and garment bags that inundate the suite. I foolishly ask if she plans on checking the 7 to 8 bags she has once at LAX. “Oh this guy I’m seeing sent me a jet because he wants to see me” she then ashes her cigarette in an empty glass next to her and revels with a twisted face, “but he’s married with kids.” After a couple hours of packing, it’s completed and the next thing we know margaritas have been requested to the room as Lindsay, myself, and my assistant retire to the balcony where we all three sip our beverages and speak openly about the future. “I like working, 2 broke girls was great. It just feels really good ya know, but I really hate LA. I should I have listened to my mom and never moved out here. It just really wasn’t the best decision for me.”
“peace begins within me”
The conversation changes to the projects she has lined up in New York and she mentions a proposed cover of Vogue Italia and talk show appearances on David Letterman, Andy Cohen, “The View,” and more, which ends with an invite for me to accompany her to New York and to stay with her in her home. A few hours later, I arrive to the airport ready to take off, upon reaching the plane Lohan is fast asleep as well as her brother and his business partner. About an hour before landing, she awakes complaining of an earache and quickly summons the stewardess to inquire about customizing the planes music to suite her tastes and the stewardess obliges. Yet to no success, the system is broken. To kill time, we all begin chatting. Lindsay and I discussed the state of fashion and how we both admire greatly what Rihanna does and her influence. Her brother and partner go back and forth about the clothing app they are currently developing in which she states Justin Timberlake, Ellen DeGeneres and Matthew Mellon are all interested in becoming partners. Lindsay explains it passionately as “Shazam for clothes” and is allegedly using technology that even NASA is interested in. This app will go head to head with programs like The Hunt and ASAP 54 which all tout the same end use. Lohan is hard at work building the foundation alongside her brother to see the launch and is confident that “this is for their future, he’ll never have to work again.” But like any partnership, especially one comprised of siblings, quarrels are bound to arise in business and in personal life. Unfortunately, Lindsay and Michael are no exception to that rule. The two seem to consistently be at each other’s throat yet have a childlike wonder and love for one another that is admirable; however, sister Lohan tends to fight much dirtier than brother Lohan. With quips like, “you guys are so ungrateful” and “you act like I’m not paying for all this” in response to our Coachella adventure. Lindsays entitlement can quickly rear its ugly head. However, it’s very tough to discern whether it’s Lindsay speaking or the Vodka. Witnessing her take gulps of Vodka from a small Evian water bottle that followed us to various events during my entire Coachella stay it was clear sobriety was of no concern. While I wasn’t privy to much interaction between Michael and Lindsay, the only times in which I saw disagreements between the two was when Miss Lohan was clearly inebriated and under the influence of much harder substances. When quizzed on the state of her much publicized alcoholism, she proudly states, “I’m not an alcoholic.” When myself and friends joke of everyone being an alcoholic now a days. This, one month from the initial witnessed sip in Los Angeles, now in her hotel room at the Parker Hotel Palm Springs during the Coachella in which Lindsay and her siblings are in bright spirits of in anticipation. When then asked if she was drinking during the filming of her OWN docu-series, a coy smirk and furrowed brow insinuate the obvious. This proclaimed right after a slightly worried face when she states how she thinks she’s had morning sickness the past few days and may in fact be pregnant by her current beu who she’d just left in London before descending upon the Coachella valley. This is the man that she states she’s whole heartily in love with. Lohan is warned by friends to be careful and to protect her heart. The moment of vulnerability read across her face shines a rare light of logical thinking and thought provoking humanity.

A far cry from the caviler state in which we discussed the infamous “Conquest List” after I spotted a recent edition of US Weekly on her coffee table adorned with her face on the cover splashed with cover lines attributing to the scandalous details of her celebrity affairs. Back in New York, when asked why she hasn’t addressed it she simply sates “If I ignore it it’ll go away. If I feed into it it’ll become something bigger than it really is”. After agreeing we venture to how in which the list was leaked and why on earth she’d even pen such a thing. Her response “Someone from the crew of the show leaked it. Everyone knows it’s a part of the process in rehab to write your sexual inventory and it was with all my stuff when I moved. Someone must have taken a picture of it. Which is really fucked up.” After once again agreeing on the utter disrespect someone could have for her privacy and property, I jokingly insinuate that that can’t be the whole list to which she responds “[Laughts] Oh God No!” The next thing I know her beau rings and her heart begins to flutter as what could only be described as love or infatuation takes over. The moments Lohan is with family or in the presence of those she loves can be heart warming, even if only as a fleeting moment. A moment, which fades the second morning of Coachella when she wakes with sprite energy and no evidence of an after effect from the ecstasy, alcohol nor lack of sleep the night before as she attempts to back out of a deal with a major retail brand who opted to sponsor her for the Coachella weekend. She feels the deal she had previously agreed upon will now cheapen her brand, which frustrates her team. After calming down and returning to reason, she finally agrees to a small portion of the deal that will hopefully satisfy the brand. After finally fulfilling her duty we trek to the festival, the last time I saw Lindsay would be as she made her way into the second day of the Coachella festival with a vodka filled Evian bottle in hand and accompanied by her sister Ali, and Brothers Cody and Michael. Indonesia:Island of the Gods. why we're ready to pack our bags now! Bali is one of over 18,000 islands that make up Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. Bali is unique in several ways, one of which being that it is a mainly Hindu island in a mostly Muslim country. As part of their distinct Balinese religion and customs, Bali is known as the Island of the Gods. It is said that when the Earth was being created, Bathara Pasupati summoned all of the Gods and Bali was created as a place were they all would be worshiped and awarded with offerings until the end of the period. The result is one of the most beautiful islands on Earth. Featuring active and barren volcanoes, sandy beaches, ancient Hindu temples, world-renowned surfing locations, and lush forests. Today, there is a population of about three million people, and the main languages spoken are Balinese and Indonesian. The island is divided into 6 main regions: North, South, East, West, Central, and the Southeastern islands. The most populated region is the South that is home to the main tourist cities of Kuta and Seminyak. While this is the most visited part of the island, each region has something to offer and helps to make Bali a place where every visitor can find there piece of paradise.
Stay
Bali offers a wide range of choices for accommodations on your vacation. Everything from a budget friendly, backpacking hostel to decadent 5 star resorts and lavish private villas. If travelling with a large group the best option is to rent a villa, and the Seminyak area features an abundance of villas available to tourists. This area also has several international hotel chains, such as the W Retreat & Spa. If you have a desire to be right in the thick of all the action, a hotel in the Kuta area would be a great place to take advantage of populated beaches and a bustling city atmosphere. For those looking for a relaxed and upscale experience, Sanur offers a casual laid-back town with great resorts and beaches.
shop
The Sukawati Market in Ubud, features local clothes, accessories and arts and crafts, all at two to three times cheaper than the Ubud market and others in the surrounding area. In this area you will also find several boutiques with yoga and casual wear, in addition to several art galleries and museums. The Kuta and Seminyak areas also feature great shopping, particularly for clothing. Both local and international brands can be found here in a mix of markets, shopping centers, and higher end boutique stores. As with the nightlife, Seminyak offers a more upscale and expensive shopping scene than Kuta.
...KODE|158
nightlife
The Kuta region has a reputation of being the go to spot to let loose and show your wild side. If you are on a mission to make tons of great memories you’ll have to help each other piece together the next day, or looking forward to waking up in bed with a hangover and a stranger this is the spot for you. Head to Bounty Ship which looks like and old Schooner, offers great specialty drinks, and features multiple happy hours a day. For a modern atmosphere, try MyRoom club that is a first choice for most tourists, and if you’re looking more of a local crowd try starting the night off at Twice Bar. If you’re packing your Louis duffel with Chanel, Hermes and all your “best friends” from Saks then Seminyak is the area to spend your nights. This upscale area of Bali features an abundance of chic spots to spend your nights with a young, artistic, glamorous crowd. Hu’u is a massive well-designed nightspot that features a lit swimming pool, where patrons can take a dip. KU DE TA, which people have compared to a fashion catwalk, is where you will find the most fashionable of Bali nightlife and great ocean views. For those who like to party till the break of dawn (I mean it is vacation, right?!), check out Double Six and Syndicate who keep the party going all night long. And if you happen to find yourself in Bali during a full moon head down to Kuta beach where there will be several parties going on.
eat
Bali is not suffering from a shortage of great place to eat. For a chic night out, Chez Gado Gado in Seminyak offers contemporary French fare with a beachfront location. For a great dinning experience featuring local cuisine Bambu Restaurant offers a beautifully designed space with impeccable food and great service. For a culinary experience, Eat and Eat Food Market is one of the most popular food markets in Bali. It is located on the third floor of the Beachwalk Mall and is designed to resemble a Mediterranean Town. When you arrive, load up a card and have fun experiencing cuisines from all around the world.
fun
If shopping, dinning and drinking don’t take up your entire vacation, there are several cultural, adventurous, and historical things to do in Bali. The beaches of Bali are a major draw to surfers around the world. In addition to surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving around the southeastern islands is a great way to spend the day. There are also, nature parks where hikes can lead to dramatic waterfalls and you can enjoy zip lining. Bali is also known for their distinct style of Hindu temples. The nine directional temples are the most prominent on the island, and protect Bali from dark forces. The temple closest to the popular regions of Kuta and Seminyak is Uluwatu temple. The most important of the nine temples, Besakih, can be found on Mount Agung. The best way to experience the Bali culture is to witness first hand daily offerings made to appease the gods and demons of Balinese Hinduism. Another way to see part of the cultural of the Balinese people is to attend a temple ceremony if you happen to be there when one is occurring. Just remember these rules if you plan to attend: 1. Always wear a sarong and sash 2. Do not walk in front of people when they are praying. 3. Do not use flash or point your camera at the priest’s face! 4. Never sit higher than the priest, the offerings and/or people praying. 5. During cremation ceremonies, do not get in the way of attendees. 6. Women are not allowed to enter temples during their menstruation.
relax
Aside from the gorgeous beaches, great surfing, bustling international party scene, and distinctive culture, many people flock to Bali to relax. After all this is the place where Julia Roberts went in Eat Pray Love to find her inner spirituality. The island offers several retreats that feature different types of yoga, massages, and meditation, such as the COMO Shambhala Estate in Ubud. Each stay at the Estate begins with an individualized program to help the guests reach their personal goals during their stay. If you just want a bit of relaxation in between the tanning and shots there are countless spas and treatment centers to service your every need. One signature treatment found on the island is the Balinese lulur, a very popular body scrub originating from the rice farmers in Bali. It is a hand crushed spice the warms the body, relieves joint and muscle pain, and leaves your skin remarkably smooth. In addition the myriad spa treatments offered, Bali also has several natural hot springs. Batur Natural Hot Springs in Bangli in the East Bali region offers several natural, clear hot springs, showers, towel service, mountain trails, a restaurant and swimming pool with bar.

Navy X Black:
For me, this is a standard color pallet. Some people don’t believe in mixing the two colors, but they are a great combination. Like best friends, they don’t only complement but play nice together as well. Giving a daytime look some fun or an evening look something sexy, both men and women can enjoy this combo yearround.
Backpacks:
Don’t think that backpacks are just for school or hikes. Backpacks make great alternatives to bags and purses. The proportional strap adjustments on your back provide less stress to one side of your body over the other. Found in cloth and leathers, the trend is for street style or high fashion, as they share a common ground.
non mixing Prints:
If you’re a fan of Jeremy Scott, disregard this rule. We have always been told to never mix prints, but it has become more and more acceptable—when done correctly. Colors can complement each other and some pattern shapes can as well. This is seen from Moods of Norway for men, or even Etro.
Rules were meant to be broken> If it Doesn’t Fit:
By Anthony Ponti
I think fit is all based on personal taste and comfort. Today, some women wear men’s clothes and vice-versa as a standard style. Girls are finding “over-sized” sweaters to be fun, and guys grab this trend as well. Now, we can sometimes get away with items that might be a little too small—skinny jeans, sweats, and (for the shoe addicts who understand a one-ofa-kind find) shoes—but there is a fine line between fashionable fit and sloppy style, so be careful to not cross it.
always been a no-no, until someone came to their senses and made nice socks. We see the trend adopted by both men and women, but in different styles. Women tend to be seen with printed, wool, or colorful socks paired with a strappy wedge sandal. Men usually refrain from color and go plain white, mixing brands like Comme des Garçon or Jordan’s depending on personal style.
Mixing Metals:
For some, this trend is risky, for others it’s more common than washing their hair. Mixing golds and silvers—and for you random few who like bronze or copper— is a trend we all know to pay close attention to. When done correctly it’s possible to get away with layering silver and gold, but most outfits look more complete when coordinated.

Wearing Socks with Sandals: This fashion rule has
White after Labor Day: This has always been a fenced fable, do we fall left and agree or fall right and be different? This, again, is a personal preference. After Labor Day is the fall/winter season when we tend to venture into a darker wardrobe, but white IS ok. Sometimes a nice white sweater or button up can work with layering or statement pieces. Keep the white away from your accessories, though.
Showing Up Overdressed:
This is me all the time. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love getting dressed up when I can. I seize every opportunity to look my best, so showing up overdressed is common. I’d rather look unarguably great than like an average Joe, so why not go all out?
Sweatpants:
People tend to think sweatpants are either lazy or underdressed, but I disagree. If done with the right pair of sweats to complement the outfit, why not go for it? Pair it with a sweater or boots. Sometimes fashionable sneaks can be nice, too. Given more respect, the idea is actually very chic. I’ve even seen them worn with heels.
Sneakers Aren’t Just forthe Gym:
This is one of my favorite trends. Street style lets people be individual and mix different fashion media to create their style. Sneaks can be a great addition to multiple styles. They include everything from a vintage Converse, Ralph Lauren sneaers, or—my personal favorite—Alexander Wang. Wedge sneakers have even become a trend. Every brand makes its own variation of a fashionable sneaker—not just ones you run in, but for comfort as well.
