< R.I.P.>

What namesake has gone down in history as one of the most innovative, daring and eclectic high fashion brands of all time? None other than Alexander McQueen. Born in London, founder Lee Alexander McQueen began his emergence into fashion at a young age, making dresses for his sisters. It was then that the budding artist realized his passion and set out with the intention to become a fashion designer. Starting off as an apprentice for two Savile Row tailors, he gained attention and developed a reputation in the world of fashion. McQueen began traveling around the world, diving into the design world and working with the top names in fashion at the time. The young designer was appointed as head designer of high-end brand Givenchy in 1996, following John Galliano and worked with the house up until 2001. Founded in 1992 the brand Alexander McQueen is to this day one of the top luxury fashion brands in the world. The brand developed a reputation riffed with controversies early into its first season launch and was labeled “the hooligan of English fashion” by its fashion coequals. Amidst the criticism and controversies however McQueen won the “British Designer of the Year” title four times. Due to the brands vast success Alexander McQueen stores began opening worldwide. The brand also expanded with the launch of its first Menswear collection in the Spring/Summer 2005 fashion year, the launch of a lower-priced line McQ and the opening of its online store in the US and United Kingdom between 2008 and 2010. The brands success was additionally bestowed with multiple collaborations by big-name brands such as PUMA, Target and MAC Cosmetics. The fashion world was brought to a halt on February 11, 2010 when the suicide of the beloved and talented designer Lee Alexander McQueen was announced worldwide. A week following his death, Robert Polet, president of Gucci Group (which had acquired 51% of the McQueen brand several years before) made it known that the brand itself would continue on. Shortly thereafter McQueen’s former design aid Sarah Burton was named creative director of the mourning brand. Polet kept his word and despite the untimely death of its founder and head designer the Alexander McQueen brand has thrived in the years following. Since, the brands collections have gained widely positive reviews and Burton’s designs have been continually praised, winning her the Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards in 2011. Following the announcement earlier this year that Harley Hughes has been appointed the “head of men’s wear design” the fashion world can not wait to see what is in store for the brands future. 37|kode...

Styling and designing for the likes of some of the top celebrities today such as Ciara, Diddy, and Jay Z, Ambrose has made a name for herself not only on the streets of New York but worldwide. Glenda Bailey A woman deeply immersed in the world of fashion, Glenda Bailey has worked for some of the most prominent fashion publications in the world. Hailing from England, Bailey received a degree in fashion from Kingston University in London. Shortly after graduation she designed a collection for Italian brand Giusi Slaverio in the early 1980’s before beginning her career in publishing. Bailey has served as editor for magazines such as Honey, British Marie Claire and currently serves as Editor-in-chief of one of the top fashion magazines in the world, Harper’s Bazaar.

Micaela Erlanger Although her name may might not ring a bell to those without an inside view of the world of fashion, Micaela Erlanger is the driving force behind one of the most fashionable women in the public eye today, Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. Working as the stylist for one of the best-dressed women currently gracing red carpets around the world Erlanger has proven she has a keen eye and impeccable taste, time and time again. Shortly after graduating with a degree in fashion from Parsons in New York City, Erlanger worked as a styling assistant for the late Annabel Tollman before going out on her own and becoming one of the most promising stylists today.

Miroslava Duma Born into a political family in Russia, Miroslava Duma became immersed into fashion early. Grabbing the reigns of fashion via the Internet, Duma has become somewhat of an icon and inspiration for young women who love fashion as much as she. Only in her mid twenties, Duma has made a name for herself due to the immense success of her career in fashion. A former editor for Harper’s Bazaar Russia, Duma currently works as a freelance writer, publishing her works in a multitude of top magazine such as Glamour Russia, Tatler and OK Magazine (Russia).

Leandra Medine Currently living in a time when the Internet reigns supreme it is no wonder that bloggers are experiencing more success than ever before and fashion bloggers are no exception. Bloggers who take on the subject matter of fashion have in modern times become somewhat of celebrities in their own right. Fashion blogger and creator of the comedic fashion website The Man Repeller, Leandra Medine is a testament to this fact. Born and raised in New York City, Medine received a degree in Journalism from The New School in Manhattan. Starting The Man Repeller blog in the spring of 2010 as simply a hobby, the site has gained massive recognition for the journalist and became a major success leading to it being named one of the “most influential trendsetters” by Forbes in 2012.

Erin Wasson Supermodel, designer, stylist, Texan and all around badass is Erin Wasson in a nutshell. The tattooed beauty began her career in the 1990’s when she was discovered after her father had submitted photos of her to a local modeling agency. Not long after, Wasson’s career in fashion took off, leading her to work with some of the best designers and photographers in fashion. Since her emergence into fashion Wasson has become much more than a model, designing for brands such as RVCA and launching her own eclectic, rock and bohemian inspired jewelry line LowLuv as well as appearing alongside Barbadian beauty and pop queen, Rihanna in the BRAVO reality competition show Styled to Rock.

L’Wren Scott The fashion and art world was rocked earlier this year when it was reported and confirmed that fashion designer and model L’Wren Scott was found dead in her Manhattan apartment due to suicide. At only 49 years of age L’Wren’s life and legacy were the epitome of top fashion. Discovered by photographer Bruce Weber, Scott set out to Paris immediately after graduating high school in order to kickoff her modeling career. Scott’s tall frame and striking beauty made the venture to Paris a success and established her as a model. Upon returning to the United States Scott moved to Los Angeles, becoming a stylist and working closely with leaders in fashion such as Karl Lagerfeld, Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton as well as designing for top celebrities and brands up until her death.

Tinker Hatfield Nike is one of the largest designing corporations today and no doubt will be for many years to come. The brands most popular product however is arguably their athletic shoes, more specifically their Air Jordan’s, a product of their subsidiary Jordan Brand which is owned by none other than NBA legend Michael Jordan. Designer and architect Tinker Hatfield joined Nike in the early 1980’s and the rest history. Hatfield has been credited for designing some of the most popular and innovative Air Jordan’s to-date. Once you’ve designed one of the most popular shoes worldwide you have made room for yourself in the front row of fashion.

Nick Wooster The best way to describe creative/fashion director and consultant Nick Wooster would be the silver fox of fashion. With strikingly handsome features that include a distinguishing grey head of hair and beard, Wooster began his career in fashion in the late 1980’s as an international buyer at Barney’s New York. Since, Wooster has taken on ventures working as a design director for Polo Ralph Lauren, fashion director at Neiman Marcus and is currently the creative director for J.C. Penny menswear.

Scott Schuman Better known by the name of his blog, “The Sartotialist” fashion photographer and blogger Scott Schuman set out in 2005 to merge both fashion and “everyday street life.” Shortly after quitting his job as a director of fashion at a showroom Schuman began carrying around his digital camera and shooting stylistically striking individuals on the street and at fashion events, posting them on his blog. The Satorialist became a quick success leading to Schuman being hired to work for style.com and Saks Fifth Avenue to name a few. Following in the footsteps of his predecessor Bill Cunningham, Schuman has established himself as the leading street style fashion photographer in recent times.

K: What can you tell us about your show “Devious Maids” on Lifetime? EG: It’s such a fun show to be a part of and I’m having the time of my life. It’s a dream come true for me and it’s also a blessing that I get to work with a great group of talented actors and feel right at home, even though they’ve all been working for much longer than I have. K: On “Devious Maids” you play Valentina who is young and determined. What are some of the things that attracted you to the character to begin with? EG: The moment I read the script, I liked all her qualities. While reading the script, I could tell Valentina was the youngest, most “innocent” and hopeless romantic girl with big dreams. Valentina always wants love to prevail and works hard so she can attend fashion school and make her fashion dreams a reality. I knew there were going to be a lot of fun and cute moments for her though the season and I was not wrong : ) K: What kind of experience has it been working with the legendary Susan Lucci? EG: Beyond incredible. She’s the sweetest woman ever and I also have learned a lot from her. She’s so glamorous, elegant and proper yet so down to earth. It’s really nice to see how she remained so grounded after all these years. K: Seeing as “Devious Maids” is produced by Eva Longoria and Marc Cherry who was behind the wildly successful Desperate Housewives and with Longoria being a Latina women herself they both must have had tons of advice for you in navigating this industry and building your career? EG: Yes, they both have been incredibly helpful in several different ways. Marc Cherry has provided me with advice about acting, career and the future. With Eva, I can relate as a female actress and wanting to do and give more to others. I have also been inspired by Eva’s philanthropy and would love to continue learning from her.

EDY WEARS TOP|FOREVER UNIQUE|FOREVERUNIQUE.CO.UK JACKET & SHORTS|GROWZE|GROWZE.LA

I didn’t really know what to expect when I first landed the role, but I’ve been learning a lot about the process of television-making as I go. Executive producer Marc Cherry told me this is a great learning experience and I could not agree more. I’ve grown tremendously as an actress. I’ve learned so much from the cast; Judy, Susan, Rebeca, Tom and everyone! I feel so much stronger and also willing to explore things I would have never thought of prior to Devious Maids. Overall, I feel much more self-confident and mature as an actress. K: Valentina loves fashion, would you consider yourself a fashionista? EG: Maybe a little bit. Definitely less than Valentina because I’m not much of a designer but I really enjoy fashion and dressing up for events and special occasions. For the most part, I just dress very casual and wear clothes that are comfortable and feel good. I believe that when you feel good, you look good.

K: Who is one of your dream co-stars? EG: Jennifer Lawrence because she’s so cool and good at everything she does. Also, Daniel Day Lewis because he’s a living legend to me. It would probably be very intimidating to work with him but I’d love to learn a thing or two from him.

Vivian Maier From Nanny to Photography Icon Her photos weren’t seen in her lifetime, as she didn’t even print most of them. Mary Poppins with a camera, she worked as a nanny and took pictures every day; 150,000 of them in total. She never reviewed her pictures and only saw them the once through her tiny viewfinder. There is not much to be known about Vivian Maier. Her work didn’t become known until her negatives were accidentally discovered in storage lockers in Chicago. She was particularly quiet and didn’t like to talk about her life much; everything she liked and didn’t like is explained through her photos. She used a twin lens Roliflex camera. This camera required the photographer to look down into the viewfinder instead of looking straight forward, which meant no eye contact was needed. Vivian was able to become invisible and get into the intimate space of strangers. People allowed it because… she wasn’t there. After supper, Vivian would always walk to the train station and take the train from the suburbs where she worked to downtown Chicago. She would walk the streets looking for subjects that interested her to come into her focus and wait for just the right moment to snap the picture. Her fame began with a simple discovery. John Maloof bought a box full of negatives in 2009 that would send him on a journey into the fantasy world of a mysterious and great photographer.

...Kode|48

Her work was remarkably striking. John wanted to showcase her great work, so he teamed up with Charlie Siskel to put it all together into a film entitled Finding Vivian Maier. The story is of an artist who masqueraded as a nanny. Why did she lead this double life? Why did she hide her artistic side? She was eccentric. She would cook fish with their eyes popping out. She would throw squids with their heads intact into a pot and make squid soup. She held the tradition with every family for which she nannied that the first meal she prepared was a meaty glistening cow tongue. It was her way of saying saying, “This is who I am. Get ready”. Vivian’s story is truly heroic because she was leading a double life. Her nannying was a means to an end. She would take the children with her to the rougher parts of town in order to take pictures of her subjects. She gave up her sex life altogether so that she could focus on her art. She was a private person, but she was not an introvert. She was witty. She was incredibly opinionated about politics, raising children, and whether New York or Chicago was the best city. She was a bit of a hoarder and stored all of her worldly possessions—tons of newspapers, photo negatives, clothes, and magazines—piled up to the ceiling of her bedroom. She was fearless and traveled around the world by herself.

Maier adventured through Canada and Nevada and stayed with tribes of Native Americans. She liked to travel because she was interested in different cultures. She was extremely intelligent. Later in her life, her photographs took on a more political and socially aware stance. The real tragedy in her lifetime, though, was that she didn’t get to see the incredible impact that her work had on the world; She didn’t get to see that people would be moved by it. The beauty of her photos was that she couldn’t take multiple photos, press the review button, and delete the ones she didn’t like. She took one photo and relied solely on her instinct that she was taking the right photo. She had an artistic eye and intuition that many of today’s photographers lack. Technological revolution means instinctual inhibition. Vivian Maier possessed something special and it reflected in her work. What gumption she had to take a photo of anyone she felt needed to be documented. She was truly invisible standing 7 feet from a man with a hole for an ear and felt comfortable enough to snap a picture. Her self-portraits are my personal favorite. They tell a story about what she thinks of herself. They’re not vain and boastful like the “selfies” of today. Her camera is positioned on her chest and, in most of the self-portraits, she appears humbly reflected in a mirror, window, or sprinkler. In some, she appears as merely a shadow on the ground. Her self-portraits reflect the views she had of herself. She shows up in the picture but is never the star or the main subject. Since all of her self-portraits are either a shadow reflection, is she trying to show that her body is just a fantasy, a vessel for her to create what she really is: her pictures? Her portraits are like standing in front of a broken mirror. Her image is split into thousands of images that, when put together, reflects back as a whole. She is not defined by one physical image; she is forever reflected in thousands of images of others. These images are a representation of her soul, of how she views the world—her ideas of beauty, art, life, and existence. Her portrait is not a physical body, as she views physicality as a temporary vessel to preserve soul. Her fantasy is to exist in all of her pictures simultaneously. Each person sees his or her fantasy as an image that exists only in the mind. Vivian’s is real and reciprocally, consequently, intentionally, now exists in my mind.

Black Beaches of Iceland – Vikurbraut, Iceland

Iceland is not always the first place that comes to mind when people think of great beach getaways. While you won’t be jaunting across the sand in your speedo on this vacation, you will be enamored by some of the greatest examples of natural beauty on Earth. Black sand, gigantic column rock formations, turquoise ice, and the northern lights are just some of the wonders the black beaches of Iceland hold. Also, if you’re looking for a bit of juxtaposition, there is a stranded 1973 Douglas C-117 airplane a little bit west of Vik, the southernmost village in Iceland.

Seagaia Ocean Dome – Miyazaki, Japan

For people who aren’t really “outdoorsy” but still want to enjoy a fun day at the beach, an indoor beach may be the solution. One of the world’s largest indoor beaches, Seagaia Ocean Dome, opened in 1993 in Miyazaki, Japan. It features the world’s largest retractable roof, artificial sand, a lazy river, multiple swimming pools, and—of course—blue skies, sunny weather, and warm water 365 days a year.

Hidden Beach – Marieta Islands, Puerto Vallarata, Mexico

Hidden Beach is, quite possibly, one of the best and most beautiful side effects of nuclear warfare. This secluded, not-so-secret beach was created as a result of bomb testing done in the 1990’s by the Mexican government. The only entrance is through a small opening barely large enough for someone to sit upright on a kayak or canoe.

SURREAL BEACHES

Lake Hillier – Middle Island, Australia

On Wednesday’s we wear pink! If pink is your thing like Regina George and crew, you won’t want to miss Lake Hillier in Australia. Separated from the ocean by only a small strip of sand, the pink color of the lake has been a mystery since it’s discovery. Yes, Pepto Bismol has been ruled out as a possible answer.

Underwater Waterfall – Mauritius Island

To witness one of Mother Nature’s truly amazing optical illusions jet off Mauritius in the Indian Ocean on the edge of the Mascarene Plateau. Sand being driven down this plunge from ocean currents creates the illusion of the underground waterfall from the sky.

Kode| We are huge fans of your album Days and Nights, when and where did you write and record it and what was the process like for you? Daley| Thank you so much. Well this is my first album, and I’ve basically been writing it over the course of the last two or three years. It was a long process, I did a lot of learning and growing and experiencing in that time. Luckily enough that life experience is what became the subject matter for the music itself so it kind of grew into itself too. I recorded it between London, LA and New York and got to work with some of my favourite producers from Bernard Butler to Pharrell Williams to Illangelo. Kode| What was it like working with such great musical talent like Miguel, Pharrell, and The Roots on the production side of your album? Daley| I haven’t actually worked with Miguel on music, we toured together for a while in the UK - I think the facts get mixed up sometimes! But I would love to work with Miguel. Working with Pharrell and The Roots I mean, it was such a pleasure. They are musicians that I literally grew up listening to, in some ways that helped shape the musician I am today in that respect, so for life to come full circle and give me the opportunity to create with them for my debut album was really incredible. And both experiences were so satisfying from a musical point of view, Pharrell and Questlove had very different methods of creating, but they were both eager to create something that would fit my project and feel ‘me’ - you know? Kode| Do you have a song in mind for the next single? Daley| Well the video for ‘Look Up’ just dropped, later than planned but better late than never….! I have been thinking about the next single, I’d really like to do ‘Time Travel’ but who knows... Kode| What would you like for this album to say about you? Daley| I would like it to show that I am human and actually not that dissimilar to everyone else in the world. I find it very easy to feel disconnected from the rest of the world sometimes, particularly in this age of social media and electronic communication - when I say disconnected I mean from the real, physical, in-person interaction and feeling - and I find one of the few things that reminds me how alike we are is music. I’d like people to be able to relate to the things I talk about on the album and hope it helps them deal with things in real life. Kode| You recently headlined your very first U.S. tour, Can you tell us about the experience? Seeing as you’ve now tackled both sides of the ponds what are some of the differences between both crowds? Daley| The experience of touring the U.S has been such a learning experience for me, it has been intense and exhausting and times, but sooooooooo rewarding and exhilarating at the same time… we’ve played so many amazing shows here to wonderful audiences. Honestly it still blows my mind that my music has travelled so far around the world that I can get off a plane in a country that I don’t know and play to sold out crowds. It really brings the the whole process of making the music to life for me. And there isn’t a massive difference between my UK and US crowds, they’re all just music lovers!

Kode| What artist are you musical influenced by and Why? Daley| I’m influenced by a lot of artists, but I always site Prince as my biggest. His music just found me at a key time in my life when I was on the verge of discovering who I am as an artist, and I feel like it helped me to understand my own identity. I was initially drawn in by the hooks and his voice and vocal arrangements, but then when I began to see how he oversaw all aspects of his career and brought it together with music, visuals, live performance, etc - it all made a lot more sense to me. Kode| If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive, who would it be and why? Daley| Would love to do a song with Chaka Khan. She’s one of my favourite voices in the world. In fact I’d probably just sit and listen and let her sing the whole song… ha! Kode| With such a promising career ahead of you, how would you like to be remembered with its all said and done? Daley| As the guy with the nice voice who helped you get through a bad break up…….. or tell someone you loved them. Something like that ;) By| Roshada Powell

A Tribe Called Quest, Raekwon and Dipset. What all these artists have in common other then the genre of music they create is that they all have performed at Rock the Bells. One of the first music festivals dedicated to hip-hop, Rock the Bells is the ideal festival for fans of the genre. Founded 10 years ago in Southern California, the festivals main goal was to cater to supporters of hip-hop music. Despite it originally being just one day and held at varying venues for the first few years, the festivals popularity grew and the Rock the Bells Tour was formed and still remains today. Spanning over the course of eight days and visiting 4 cities across the country this years lineup like those before it consists of who’s-who in hip hop and R&B today.

Bonnaroo

n

no

A music as well as art festival, Bonnaroo is held in the heart of Manchester, Tennessee. With twelve years under its belt Bonaroo has easily become one of the largest music festivals in the country. Also one of the longest, lasting a total of four days, the festival, which initially focused on folk rock bands now includes rock, country, hip hop, reggae and electronic acts. Named after the Creole slang term, which roughly translates to “the best on the street,” Bonnaroo can no doubt argue that it is just that.

Rave culture has been around for decades now but with the rise of electronic dance music or EDM the popularity of music festival events such as Electric Daisy Carnival, better known as EDC has increased immensely. Founded in Los Angeles in 1997 as a one day musical carnival at the Shrine Auditorium the event has now expanded not only to 3 days but occurs all over the world in Las Vegas, New York, Florida, Puerto Rico, London and Mexico. Although the festival has gained some backlash over the years due to deaths of attendees caused by drug overdoses the festivals popularity has not decreased and the lineups include some of the most popular acts in dance music today.

One of the better-known names in music festivals is Lollapalooza. Naturally the 3-day long festival has roots in rock music being that it was founded in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell, but that hasn’t scared the festival away from diversity. Following a 6-year hiatus starting in 1997 the music fest was resurrected in 2003 to music enthusiast’s satisfaction. Originally a touring festival, Lollapalooza laid down its rockin’ roots in Grant Park located in Chicago, Illinois and quickly took back its reputation as one of the best music festivals in the U.S. Since, the fest has expanded overseas, touring in Santiago, Chile, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Along with its diverse locations the festival is additionally comprised of an assorted lineup.

Not to be confused with the posh party following the Emmy Awards, New York City’s Governor’s Ball Music Festival is more than likely much more entertaining. Held on Randall’s Islands in the city that never sleeps the now three-day festival is the only of its kind held in the city. Appearing on the music festival scene in 2011 the Governors Ball has since its first event catered to every lover of music. With its initial one day lineup in 2011 featuring top musical acts the festivals lineup appears to get better and better with each year.

Labor Day weekend 2006 was more then just that; it was the weekend that birthed Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. Held on Saint Helen Island in Montreal, it is the perfect excuse for any music enthusiast to visit the charming French city. Taking place either the last weekend of July or the first weekend of August (as it is this year) the 8-yearold festival, although dubbed an “indie music fest” has this year more than ever catered to attendees interested in various types of music

Sasquatch!

Founded in 2002 and one of the few music festivals in the Pacific Northwest, Sasquatch! has grown immensely in its musical diversity over the years. Described as “one of the top ten summer music festival’s” the 3-day festival is held over Memorial Day Weekend, taking place in the rural town of George, Washington. Although its lineups contain mostly indie rock it also consists of a wide range of varying genres. With a more diverse lineup each coming year there is no doubt that this five stage festival will soon be a Mecca for lovers of every musical genre.

Made In America

This two-day festival endorsed by both Jay Z and Budweiser caused quite a stir earlier this year with the announcement that it would expand to Los Angeles this summer. Originally held only in Philadelphia at Benjamin Franklin Parkway to critical acclaim the west coast is more than excited for the festival. Brought to fruition by one of the biggest names in hip hop music it is was only expected that the top artists today were included on the lineups and to our satisfaction they are. One of the youngest festivals of its kind, Made In America, due to its close ties with the hip hop community, has featured artists such as: Odd Future, Meek Mill and Run-DMC.

OVO Fest

Drake’s OVO Fest has arguably been one of the most anticipated music festivals of the past few years. Beginning four years ago, the annual festival takes place in none other than Drake’s hometown of Toronto, Ontario. Drake’s hosting of the festival has not been the only factor attributing to its rise in popularity, but it’s A-List lineup consisting of the top artists today. It is safe to say, if anyone is looking for a festival where they are inclined to see almost everyone on the lineup they can look no further then the city of Toronto at the OVO Fest. The Young Money rapper has confirmed himself as well as the hit group Outkast will perform this year, while the rest of the lineup has yet to be announced.

Firefly Festival

When asked if they would ever visit Dover, Delaware, most out-of-towners would initially, more than likely say, “No!” but once they hear about The Firefly Music Festival their answer might quickly change to a “Yes!” The 3-day music festival has without a doubt put the city of Dover and entire state of Delaware on the map for unsuspecting music lovers. Held on the vast festival grounds at The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway since its emergence in 2012, the festival claims, with its tagline, to be “The East Coast Premier Music Experience.” Of course that is up for the attendees to decide, but from first-hand festival goers accounts it is by far one of the best on the Coast.

ARTIST PROFILE

RYAN BURKE NEW YORK BASED FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER IS REDEFINING PORTRAITS AS YOU KNOW IT

...Kode|84

K: Where do you find the inspiration behind your amazing photos and costumes? RB: Apart from my creative friends who are all very inspiring people, my inspiration comes from abstract places. I don’t wear glasses even though I need them and my world is sort of a blur of color and shapes most of the time. I see color combinations or textures and shapes and my mind sorta takes it from there. I usually have a color scheme in mind and I go to a craft or floral shop and find things that relate to an aesthetic that I’m building off of. From there I just let the headpieces and makeup happen organically. I hardly ever plan a look beyond color and materials I want to use. K: How’d you get started in the world of alternative art culture? RB: I was living in Orange County, California and started going out with my friends Edward Vigiletti, Mikel Mitchell, Jesse St. John, and Jade Allred My friends all liked to go to these particular subcultural parties where people dressed up. Most of the people at these parties were artists or performers and brought a look. I didn’t want to do drag and I hadn’t developed a personal style that was distinctive enough. I began with geometric glitter shapes on my face and let it grow from there. Eventually it became the whole production it is now where I need an outfit, headpiece, a full-face of makeup, shoes, accessories, etc. I began hosting parties and meeting all kinds of artists that I could collaborate and grow with. I then moved to New York where I was pushed and inspired more than ever. Now it is a big part of who I am rather than just an occasional hobby. K: How exactly would you describe your style of art and expression? RB: I would call it alien ambassador realness. I feel like my aesthetic can’t be directly linked to any particular culture or movement. I definitely draw from elements of drag but not always and not for the purpose of a female illusion. I don’t attach myself to just one style because I have too many ideas to limit myself in that way. The outcome is, so i’ve been told, very alien and since I do like to look tall and sophisticated I feel like each look could be an ambassador from a different planet. Each with its own aesthetic and story. They are all characters in a way. K: What would you say to those who don’t understand? RB: If people don’t understand then they are thinking too hard. Most of the time they are trying to relate it to something they’re familiar with so it makes more sense to them. People like to categorize things for their own comfort. Each look I do is a visual story or color, texture, and style. It has nothing to do with androgyny, drag, glamour, gay culture, or any culture for that matter. K: You must be very inspired day to day, what kind of things are you typically inspired by? RB: Anything is a source of inspiration if your mind is open enough. I feel like those who embrace their artistic/creative side see the world differently and are able to translate the things they see and experience into their art. I’m on a constant stream of inspiration both for looks and for photo shoots I want to produce.

85|kode...

K: What do your parents and family think of your amazing artwork? RB: My family and especially my parents are extremely supportive and encourage everything that I am doing. I am lucky to have been brought up in a house where I was never told that my self expression was wrong or immoral. I was also encouraged in whatever I did whether it was music, psychology, art, computer science, etc. I know many people who don’t talk to their families or have difficult relationships with their parents. It’s still very common for those living alternative lifestyles to be turned away by their familes because they don’t understand. It’s unfortunate because the relationship you have with your family should be one of the most important in your life. K: When you are out in full costume on the street what kind of reactions do you receive from people on the street? RB: I get a mix of reactions on any given night. There are the people who love it and scream “WERK, YESSS!” There are the ones who just stare, the ones who pretend you don’t exist, and occasionally the confrontational ones who at least call you a faggot, at most threaten you. Most of the time I’m out with a group of friends though so we don’t get messed with that much. I’ve had bottles and rocks thrown at me. I’ve had people take photos with me and tell me how much they love what I’m doing. When you are dressed up people don’t consider your privacy as much. You’re a bit of a spectacle and people love to react. K: Is there any kind of political undertone of gender statement your are making in your photos? RB: Through my photos I promote self-expression without boundaries. I don’t have a political agenda in what I do but it is political in that I am a male who expresses himself in an alternative, abnormal, often feminine way. This is just how I live my life though. Many of my friends are transgender, androgynous, drag queens, performers, artists...people who don’t just wear a polo and cargo shorts. None of them do it to be political. I love to photograph everyone because I think I have a beautiful group of friends. I believe people should be celebrated for their individuality instead of being criticized because they aren’t “normal.” K: With fellow artists such as Mathu Anderson there seems to be a growing community within the art community for such expression, how do they embrace you and your work? RB: I give and get a lot of love from people. Mathu and I have actually never talked although we are connected on facebook. I have chatted with many other artistic individuals around the world and we all support and encourage each other in social media and in person to keep pushing the art and creativity.

DESIGNER PROFILE

-

COUTURIER CREATES CLASSIC FEMININITY WITH MODERN EDGE

K - So many designers speak of how they realized they enjoyed fashion at a very young age, when did you realize this was something you wanted to pursue? JD - Before I can even recall. Growing up as a child I was fond of beauty & art and loving fashion day after another. I got grounded for the longest time for cutting my mother’s curtains in attempt to make my first gown. If I weren’t a designer, I really wouldn’t know what I would’ve done. K - You work has an almost other worldly glamour to it. How would you yourself describe your voice, vision and aesthetic? JD - Its just the way I feel, I see things, hear things; then leads to creation. Every woman wants to feel young, sexy , wants to feel special in her own way. I make sure to deliver that in all my work. Glamour is the wow factor that gives a woman her aura. The secret behind Jad Ghandour dresses is the built in corset I use; so tight around her waist & chest, shaping such a flattering silhouette, boosting her confidence. Reviving old Hollywood’s glamour “silver screen” is one of the things I enjoy most, yet on the other hand you find me jumping into the future, metallic harnesses, edgy shoulders, and unexpected cutouts, oh and by the way “leather” is my middle name. K - There are so many legends in the fashion industry and so many great new comers, who are some of the all time great designers you look up to and are there any young kids who’s work you enjoy? JD - Mc Queen’s work is unbeatable, Dior’s taste is impeccable, and Valentino’s femininity is unconditional. This is a tough one since I’m so bad with names, so much beauty I’ve seen, great emerging designers from all over. K - You’ve really only just begun your career after graduating fashion school back in 2009,

...Kode|100

but so far what has been one of the most defining moments in your career? JD - Except the moment when they came to me back stage at Lincoln Center, asking me to have another show right after the show ends, due to the excess people that wanted to attend and had no seats. My very first show before graduation in Beirut 2009, and my first season in New York hold dearest to my heart. K - While in college you had the pleasure to work with the iconic Elle Saab, can you share some of the advice he shared with you and how it has helped to advance your career? JD - All I recall is when I graduated, he handed me my certificate and told me “You’re up there before you know it”. Honestly that meant so much at the time and made me feel so good, and I was looking forward for the future. K - Your work has actually been compared to Ellie Saab and on numerous occasions you’ve been billed as “The New and Next”, how do you personally feel about that, and have you chatted with Ellie on the matter? JD - When I first saw Harper’s Bazaar article/ interview calling me ”The New Elie Saab” I got hyped with the heat of the moment, and of course being linked with a big international Lebanese name that makes us all proud, but I tend to sprout more to a dramatic futuristic feel, bearing my slim silhouette,

defined waist and flowing femininity. K - All designers’ beginnings are so different some had great support systems and some had none, who was most instrumental in helping you realize your talent and pushed you to pursue it? JD - My Family!! I had their support all the way till today. And to be very honest with you, without my parents’ full support I wouldn’t be the person and the designer I am today. Forever grateful to their unconditional love. K - Fashion seems to be really no pun intended in fashion right now, what is your take on the current state of the industry and where do you see it going in the future? JD - The industry is a jungle right now. People running naked, half naked, fully sheer dresses, women in armors & tiaras, it’s a chaos, but isn’t that what fashion is all about. Statements!! Fashion today offers you all styles, ages, periods etc… find who you are and dress accordingly. Personally I love to keep on pushing fashion forward for we need the change we need the future. We live in a world where technology dominates and thus all has to follow. Let’s experience the future together and reach the very near future when Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fifth Element costumes become the fashion.

“I tend to sprout more to a dramatic futuristic feel, bearing my slim silhouette defined waist and flowing femininity.

K - So Shantel what can you tell us about your new series “Gang Related”? S - Well we are deep into the first season and its such a complex and intense show! It centers around Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez) who is a member of the Gang Task Force in Los Angeles but is also a member of a local gang called the Los Angelicos. This task force is run by my father Chapel (Terry O’Quinn) and to make things more complicated I am the Assistant District Attorney assigned to this task force. It has so many different characters from different walks of life and backgrounds. It really explores the human sides of each character and the core issue is family and not always in a literal sense. Its about where your loyalties are and what/who you are fighting for. Its a fun show to follow because as each episode happens more gets revealed and unraveled. You have to follow it closely and pay attention to the details. I haven’t seen any of the episodes so I am watching every Thursday with the world too and its fun to see what they suspect and pick up on. K - How excited were you initially on getting a leading role in the series? S - I had waited awhile after my last series wrapped to find the RIGHT job and the RIGHT role for me and when this came along I had an offer on another show as well and I wasn’t sure which way it would go. So much of what we do is out of our control. I remember I was home with my family in Texas when I got the phone call and I screamed and burst into tears… my whole family did and it was a beautiful moment to share with my family. They are my support system and cheerleaders! I am always so grateful and excited for new roles; its a new adventure I get to embark on and a new character I get to breathe life into! What do you like most about your character on the show Jessica Chapel, she has quite a bold personality? She is very bold, that’s one way to put it but I like that about her. She knows what she wants and she knows how to get it. She takes the reigns and isn’t afraid to put herself out there. She also knows most people around her operate in a gray area and has worked hard to make sure she keeps things black and white. She believes there is right and wrong and justice needs to be served honestly always. Sometimes when you start with a character who has such extreme beliefs you get to watch those beliefs be challenged and them grow beyond their own boundaries. I like her journey this season its complex and interesting and mysterious all together! You landed your first big TV role on the show One Tree Hill as Quinn, What was your overall experience and what were your feelings upon its ending, that show meant so much to a lot of people? Coming into it was nerve wracking I had a standard to uphold and I was the new girl in a school where everyone had bonded for 6 years before! I am glad I had Rob there with me. We bonded instantly and it was much easier than I thought to fit right in. It was an amazing 3 seasons and I am so very grateful for the experience. It taught me more than I could ever have imagined and I have friends now I will have for life because of it! And more than that the fans I have gained and the support from them is incredible to me. When it ended it was emotional for me they had all become a family and it was hard to say goodbye but all I can feel is gratitude for every moment of it! K - Being remembered as your character Quinn who was known for her fashion and style. What are some of your favorite trends of this season? S - For me I always love fall most because I love textures and layering SO much! I love leather and big knits the most and feeling cuddly and cozy! BUT this summer has been different for me I have implemented so much more color into my wardrobe and tried colors I have never worn before. I think red and coral have been what I have bought a lot of! I bought some bold colored heels and bikinis as well to add a punch! Also mixing patterns with all the separates and crop tops has been fun this summer to play with! This is coming from a girl who’s closets have so much black, gray and white so I have really loved the bold colors this summer! K - Who would you say is one of your ultimate style icons? S - I can’t say I just have one because I feel as though I pull ideas and am inspired in fashion by so many different people! From Kate Moss to Sarah Jessica Parker to Alexa Chung to Oliva Palmero! K - What advice do you give young women aspiring to become model/actresses? S - If something is your dream… If something inspires you and you can’t imagine NOT doing it… then chase after it and work hard… anything is possible… the life you desire can be yours so don’t quit on your aspirations. I believe in you! By| Roshada Powell

OBSESSED

WHAT IS THE KODE KREW OBSESSED WITH THIS SEASON? SAM SMITH The British crooner taking the world by storm, Smith’s smooth melodious voice catapulted the 22 year old to the top of the charts worldwide and with the release of his first LP “In The Lonely Hour” Smith seems to have found a resounding and dedicated fan base holding on to his every crescendo and emotion ridden stealth delivery. With critically acclaimed tracks such as “Reminds Me of You”, “Stay With Me” and “Restart” this brit has some definite staying power. And all of our fingers are crossed for a duet with Beyoncé.

THE 7 MINUTE WORKOUT APP This one’s pretty self-explanatory. While a lot of us may not have time to hit the gym for 2 hours a day, this snazzy app gives a killer 7 minute workout that makes staying fit just a little easier with step by step guides, timers, and voice prompting, there’s not even a need to look at the phone when getting your sweat on.

GLAZED DONUT BISTRO This West Hollywood bakery serving up the best sweetly-sophisticated artisan donuts has officially made addicts out of the #KodeKrew. Using fresh locally sourced organic ingredients when possible, Glazed Donut Bistro creates a superb seasonally inspired menu that will send your taste buds raging (our personal favorite is the Brown Butter Maple Bacon) and the house-made dipping sauces are sure to delight.

ON THE RUN The ’03 Bonnie and Clyde, Hov and B are officially on the run all across America and we are running right behind them. The hit-packed 40 song set is a can’t miss show of the summer, whether you are a diehard member of the Beyhive or reppin’ the ROC, these tickets are a must! (just remember the Beygency is watching).

CHANTELLE BROWN-YOUNG A true testament and shining beacon of embracing all of ones self flaws and all. This 19 year old budding icon is blazing a trail all her own. Suffering from the rare skin disease, vitiligo, Brown-Young or also known as Winnie Harlow is truly a benchmark and roll model for millions of women who fall victim to society’s definition of beauty and we applaud her journey. #LoveTheSkinYourIn

THe fantasy creators photos by|josef jasso

from plastic fantastic to evita los angeles promoters Luke nero and andres regal take kode behind the curtains of their fantasy factory...

Kode| You guys are the party monsters of West Hollywood, it must be a superb feeling to have your parties hailed as some of the most creative and progressive in Los Angeles, is it?

LN+AR| It’s really not something we think about often, but when you put it that way it feels great! We love what we do and we are so grateful for all of our success. We continually challenge and push ourselves to new, uncomfortable places because that is what sparks growth. There is a fine line between being confident in your craft, and being complacent in it. The second you think you have secured a spot for yourself in the field you want, there will always be dozens shortly behind you vying for the crown. Kode: How did each of you get your start in the promoting arena? Luke Nero| I started with Mr. Black in 2006 in Park Slope Brooklyn with its concept creator Stuart Black. I managed the club and became the infamous ‘ass-less’ waiter. People in L.A. don’t realize that Mr. Black was a full-time club in NYC in the beginning with upwards of four nights a week. I moved to LA because I was burnt out, to tell you the truth. But ultimately Mr. Black’s run was not quite finished and the demand was there. Two years is normally my cap then I am bored, that’s the Sagittarius in me. But my first nightclubby job was at a cocktail lounge in Sydney called ‘Gilligans’ where I was allowed to be a supremo bitch and get paid for it. Andres Rigal| I worked my way up in the talent agency world at Creative Artists Agency, but soon found I wasn’t happy. A close friend got me a gig booking Bardot, where I met Luke. It was a match made in hedonistic heaven. Since then Luke and I have successfully created Simon Says, Rasputin, Evita, SummerTramp, Plastic Fantastic and most recently Thunder Ground: Roller Rink and Disco. Kode| You guys went through a very controversial situation with the owners of The Robertson in regards to your very popular night Rasputin: Russian Love Machine. Can you shed some light on that and how it was resolved? LN+AR| Rasputin: Russian Love Machine was our first large format brand that we created together specifically for the West Hollywood market and we are extremely proud of everything we were able to accomplish before we decided to close the brand in January 2014. Unfortunately, we are still dealing with the owners of The Robertson and cannot shed any more light at this time. Kode| What do you believe it takes to make a successful promoter in today’s market? LN+AR| To say the nightlife is competitive is a gross understatement. The market is so oversaturated with parties and nightclubs that it’s hard to stand out even for seasoned veterans. Because of this, it’s important that you create compelling content that resonates in the community and speaks to your audience. Kode| Being that you guys are very experienced and have been promoting successfully for so long, you have to have some pretty outrageous stories, what is one of the craziest things you’ve witnessed? LN+AR| Hey remember that time CHER got stuck in the elevator?!? Longest minute of our lives… Kode| If you both weren’t promoting, what do you think you’d be doing right this minute? LN+AR| Creating. We’ve always felt that the definition of “promoter” has never really fit for us. Instead, we think of ourselves as Producers and our parties as Brands. If it weren’t nightlife then it would be another creative industry where we could stretch our minds. Right now its nightlife and tomorrow it may be television. Kode| Building and maintain relationships and communicating is such a big part of what you do, how do you manage to stay connected with so many people? LN+AR|We are both are very natural socializing people and very true to who we are and that is very respected by people. And the people that we do build relationships with are honest true relationships whether big or small. Kode|What’s some advice that you’d offer to some of the younger kids in the nightlife arena?

...Kode|130

LN+AR|Do your homework. If I hear one more club kid try to recreate ‘Party Monster’ I will scream. Get creative, think forward and don’t get caught up in the imaginary atmosphere you create.

Hey remember that time CHER got stuck in the elevator?!? Longest minute of our lives…

K: Being one of the hottest new artists on the scene with one of the summer biggest hits “2 On” ft. School Boy Q. What has been your reaction to the success of your very first single? T: If you want my honest answer, it would be, FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting, working and willing this to happen for literally my entire life. K: In fall, your forthcoming album “Aquarius” will be released. You’ve worked with some of the latest and greatest artist and producers in the industry. Can you give us some insight on who’s working on your album with you? What will be the mood of “Aquarius”? T: The creative process has been a remarkable one for me. In the past 2 years I’ve been able to work with everyone from Stuart Matthewman (Sade), Dev Hynes and Romy of The xx to DJ Mustard, Detail and DJ Dahi. As for the work that spawned from these collaborations, my hope is that from start to finish, Aquarius will take you someplace and make you feel something. There are up-tempos, down tempos, mid-tempos and a little bit of everything in between. K: With fashion and style being such a big part of music how would you describe your personal style and do you have style icons? T: Hmmmm, I think style is a hard thing to describe. I saw this guy rocking baggy jeans hiked up real high with suspenders and white v-neck t-shirt, a straw hat and buck shoes the other day and I thought, damn that guy is owning this look. On paper, it may sound like a fashion nightmare but the man owned it and I loved it. Style has everything to do with the individual underneath the clothes and nothing to do with the clothes. I hope my style is a reflection of me and my music. Some days I feel like being a tom boy and other days I feel like being a lady. I think my style speaks to that sensibility, although I’m sure I have made some mishaps along the way.

K: Speaking of working with great artist, Drake was a part of a remake of your single “2 On” and you didn’t even know it. We also saw you guys working the stage together at his concert. Is it an insane feeling to know Drake is a fan of your music? T: You hope, as an artist, that people respond to your music. To know that someone I respect as not only a musician, but a person messes with my music is one of the biggest compliments I could receive. K: Musically what are you influenced by? T: Better question is what am I not influenced by? The cover of the NY Times influenced me the other day. The guitar player on the 6 train platform influenced me. A crazy lightning storm in NYC a few weeks back influenced me. Random things affect my mood and by default influence me in musical ways. K: Before becoming a member of the girl group ‘The Stunners’ you were an actress. You landed roles in “The Polar Express” with Tom Hanks and “Two and Half Men”. Are you going to continue to pursue your acting career and how was the transition from being an actress to becoming an artist? T: Yes, I plan to pursue acting again. That said, my sole focus at this point is to break as a musician and after that I will see what the acting world has in store for me. K: Your first major tour was with girl group ‘The Stunners’ as the opening act for Justin Bieber’s “My World” tour. How would you describe that experience? T: At 14, to be able to go on a 30 city tour with, arguably, one of the biggest pop stars was a gift. I grew up a ton on that tour, and I’m so appreciative for the experience. K: Is the pressure any different from being the opening act to now headlining your own concerts? Why? T: The pressure is totally different because now it’s all on me. Success and failure all ride on what I lay out there on the stage from one night to the next. But honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the pressure, it inspires me. K: While mainstream radio listeners may be just now getting acquainted with you and your sound, you’ve actually been around for some time working very hard creating critically acclaimed mix tapes. What has your journey been like? T: You go from recording in your bedroom, hoping that someone besides your mom and dad will hear your music, to recording with Tor and Mikkel from Stargate and you are amazingly awoken by the reality that you are one lucky person. The journey has been a crazy one, but I wouldn’t change a moment of it. K: Now that you’re captivating the masses with your music, having an established acting career, and not to mention amazing dance skills. Tell us what can’t Tinashe do? T: I can’t balance a checkbook to save my life. Hahahaha By|Roshada Powell

GET YOUR

FANTASY BODY LEARN TO LOVE YOUR WORKOUT, YOUR BODY WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT If you spend more time out of your day looking at pictures that motivate you to workout and eat healthy then statistically you are more likely to well…workout and eat healthy. How many times have you sat on the couch and a commercial for Jack in the Box comes on? A burger drops in front of your face like a golden shit from the gods, and like a pair of perfect tits, it bounces but all the good stuff stays intact and you find yourself thinking “I would rather have a salad”. NEVER! This never happens. Chances are the next time you’re driving past a Jack in the Box and your stomach gurgles for some grease and MSG you’re most likely going to stop in and order that *Tantalus burger… Well don’t! Think about your fantasy body and remember that a burger doesn’t taste as good as it feels to be fit! A Fantasy Body is a healthy body that makes men (or women) stop and turn. It’s a perky butt sitting atop a pair of defined legs, that quiche gap, two dimples just above the crack that complement the lower back, nicely tanned skin that helps the eyes flow up the curve of your backside to a pair of dainty shoulders (or super buff manly ones…depending upon what you’re into) that accompany visible collar bones, a flat sculpted stomach and a great pair of REAL boobies (or pecs) unfortunately the last part is the only thing hard work and dedication can’t fix… for us ladies, argh. The great thing about a Fantasy Body is that it’s completely attainable. Have you ever thought of that? Your fantasy body can become reality, it really depends upon how much you’re willing to sacrifice to get it! It takes will power, strength, and commitment. This life is a journey of fantasies and imagination and the will power to make the right choices to attain them. The first step is to set a long term goal…what do you want to have accomplished in a year? Losing 20 pounds? Eliminating all sugar? Being vegetarian or even vegan? Eating all organic? Gaining 10 pounds of muscle? Well, set a reward for yourself. Rewards are the most important piece to completing your fantasy body. Treat your body and mind right, love yourself and prove to yourself that you can attain this reward at the end of the journey. This reward can be anything from treating yourself to a massage, or going on a trip to Hawaii. (Write goal here)______________________________________________________________________ (Write reward here)____________________________________________________________________ The second step is to set a more immediate goal for a month from now…. help you achieve your fantasy body within these next 4 weeks. Would it be increasing your number of workouts to 3-4 times a week? Incorporating strength workouts into a cardio regimen? Make it impossible to talk yourself out of it. Make a challenge for yourself and then reward yourself for kicking that challenge’s ass! (Write goal here)______________________________________________________________________ (Write reward here)____________________________________________________________________ For the next week challenge yourself to go to two classes at the gym and go for a run. Tell all of your family members and the world of Facebook your new schedule and how motivated you are to change. That way you’ve shoved yourself so far down into a hole of expectations that it makes it too embarrassing to explain why you can’t get out. At the end of this week it is imperative that you reward yourself for your good work, whether it be a movie, a date night, a glass of wine, or even a nice dinner. Rewarding yourself with food is fine…I do it. Chocolate cake is my vice. But I only do this if I have accomplished my goals of healthy eating and exercise for the week. One quote that has always stuck in my mind is, “one bad meal won’t make you fat, just like one healthy meal won’t make you skinny”. Its a way of life, its a consistency and will power to be able to restrain yourself and overcome temptation. Learn to love your workouts, how you feel when you’re finished and savor your rewards. Your fantasy body can become a reality, it just takes some motivation and dedication! *The word “tantalize” comes from the plight of the mythological Tantalus, who so offended the gods that he was condemned in the afterlife to an eternity of hunger and thirst.

TRY SOMETHING NEW New gym studios across the states are always popping up that offer new classes to spice up the daily work out. Bikram yoga is one of the few workouts where you can tone, detox and gain flexibility. Barre work outs are renowned as one of the best ways to lose fat without gaining bulky muscle definition. For the dancers there is a new workout called Fit Steps which combines the moves of ballroom and latin steps. On days where hitting the gym just can’t fit into your schedule, give the 7 Minute Workout a go. In just 7 minutes you can get your cardio on due to its high intensity interval training.

TO JUICE #OrNah > If a cleanse seems like something you’d like to try here are some of my favorites: Organic Avenue: The only Organic plant-based graband-go brand based in the U.S. They believe that a diet restricted to juices is unrealistic, so they provide solid food (in the form of a salad) at the end of the day. Juicing: the act of extracting natural fluid from vegetables or fruits to be prepared or used as food; a fad that is fueling the new emblem of modern urban virtue, self-control, and health throughout New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In the midst of a juice cleanse, hunger is a constant state of being. Some may only survive one meal replacement of liquefied kale and carrots and some may have the will power to last a few days. The suffering is persevered in hopes of cleansing and replenishing the mind and body.

Blue Print Cleanse

Urban Remedy: 100% Organic

For health, diet, or “just keeping up with the Jones’” reasons, many have taken up juicing. There has been significant evidence that juicing could be the most effective holistic means of curing cancer. An alternative to cancer treatment called The Gerson Therapy involves supplements, juicing, and a special diet to cleanse the body, boost the immune system, and stimulate metabolism. The Therapy is based on the theory that disease is caused by an accumulation of toxic substances such as fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals found in our foods. The Gerson Therapy uses an all-organic fruit and vegetable diet to properly equip the body to fight cancer. Rather than using drugs to treat symptoms, The Gerson Therapy addresses the underlying causes of disease to heal its patients. Gerson has a fifty percent cure rate with terminally ill patients and a spectacular recovery rate for malignant melanoma patients. Avid juicers may not be so familiar with the entirety of the health benefits of juicing. Large consumption of fruits and vegetables in addition to regular exercise likely plays a significant role in preventing cancer. Some claim that the benefits of juice cleanses are all “hocus-pocus” and that may be correct, depending on the desired goal. If you’re looking for the “get rich quick” approach to slimming down, a cleanse might sound like a good idea… until the cleanse is over. Severely restricting calories to only a few bottles of juice a day may provide visual appeal for the first few days, but, chances are, the weight will quickly return. For the health-conscious individual, bottled juice cleanses are not the shining beacon of hope that they’re made out to be. They are often high in sugar content and the origin of the fruits and vegetables is difficult to determine. My suggestion is to invest in a juicer and purchase all organic veggies and fruits to rid your body of toxins on your own.

<Indigo Children>

...Kode|152

It was a winter day in L.A., early November to be exact. Not that it’s really ever winter in the city of angels, but on this day there did happen to be an exceptional chill in the air along with heavy cumulus clouds covering our usually clear blue sky. A friend and I sat on the edge of a grassy hill in Baldwin Hills overlooking Los Angeles in its entirety from the south. We were engaged in deep spiritual conversation when he suddenly exclaimed, “You’re an Indigo Child!” I was confused by the term as we plunged into a conversation about the soulfully unique individuals who are said to not only be closer to our true essence, but here to bring those unaware to theirs. So what exactly differentiates these purplish-blue-aura-possessing select few from those who do not possess such? The term “Indigo Child” was created by Reader of Auras Nancy Ann Tapper. It was later described by businessman Lee Carroll, an avid Indigo Child enthusiast and author, as a “next step in human evolution.” Indigo Children are said to have spiritual as well as psychological qualities that average humans do not. In certain cases, Indigos have abilities, such as telepathy, and are viewed as naturally more creative and intune than their average peers. Upon learning about this somewhat-hybrid human, many find themselves asking, “Am I an Indigo Child?”

The 10 Traits of Indigo Children:

I can’t say for sure if my friend was right about me that day on the hill. But, I must say that after looking deeper into these gifted, spiritually-evolved among us, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t spark something within me. To find out more information on Indigo Children

_The_ secret_mystical_world of_the_Illuminati

[ ] By|Mi’Chele Daniels

Illuminati, which means “enlightened” in Latin, today stands for so much more. The word refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, a secret society founded during the Era of Enlightenment in 1776. The society’s main goals during that time were to support gender equality and women’s rights, all the while resisting against prejudice, corruption of state powers, and superstition. Banished by its Bavarian ruler, along with other secret societies, the Bavarian Illuminati was finally dissolved in 1785. Today, however, the secret society is still believed to exist— with contrasting views and objectives. Those who claim to be members of the Illuminati today are those whom claim to be connected with the authentic Bavarian group and/or Free Masons. Although many believe that the Bavarian group did not survive its suppression and disbanding in the late 1700’s, numerous people believe that it was not and is, instead, still alive and thriving in our current society. Although there is no evidence to hold these claims as true today, there are several “fraternal organizations” that claim that they are descendants of the Bavarian Illuminati and who use the title of “Illuminati” freely. These organizations and the belief that the Bavarian society persevered have led to countless modern day conspiracy theories. The primary of these theories is that events around the world today and in history are being and have been manipulated, orchestrated, and controlled by the secret society. It is believed by some that, in order to carry

out its tasks and hold on to its power, the society has heavily infiltrated entertainment, placing subliminal symbols and messages in popular music, film, television, books, and games. It is speculated by many conspiracy theorists that, due to this fact, a large number of public figures are affiliated with the Illuminati. Some of these are: Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Rick Ross, and Chris Brown. The aforementioned celebrities are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to conspiracies involving celebrities in the Illuminati. Current conspiracies have even included the U.S. President and First Lady, Barrack and Michelle Obama. They are not the first government figures to be suspected of associating with the mysterious secret society, though. There are records and accounts which prove that the Founding Fathers of the United States were all part of the Free Mason Society. It is also widely known that simply typing “Illuminati” backward into a web browser redirects to the U.S. Government’s National Security Agency’s website, a revelation that has been proof enough for some. Some call it conspiracy; some call it blatant truth. Regardless, it is uncertain if we will ever confirm that the Illuminati is still a functioning secret society that controls mass media, entertainment, and government today, but we can say for certain it hasn’t been proven untrue.

A CASE AGAINST BLACK Black is no longer what you think it is or want it to be. Black has become an easy outlet for the fashion novice who yearns to be taken seriously. For those of us who praise fashion as an art that is always evolving as a reflection of the future, how did we get buried in what was supposed to be a fleeting trend?

intimidation or the elegance that once surrounded the color. Coco Chanel introduced black as a chic option that can be worn outside of mourning in the 1920’s and decades later in the 1980’s we arrive at the trends in discussion. Three decades later this aesthetic is being knocked off and sold as modern. But why? Because it has a few graphic This is not a request for the general prints on it? Street goth (the most succinct way I could find to define this aesthetic although not all encompassing) in one word is blasé. Even the original creators and curators have deviated from their signature all black color scheme such as Haider, Yohji and Riccardo. Color now offers a creative platform for the new generation of designers that is largely untapped and is just starting to be defined for our times. The use of color is now personal and is worn by the individual, not vice versa. Color cannot speak for the wearer, as it

has no biases. For great examples of color progressing fashion and what our eyes have become normalized to give Mary Katrantzou, Dion Lee and Peter Pilotto a quick search. Some designers are using black in design appropriately, but at its worst it is drowning in pretention and bad ideas. As Lysa Cooper told Vogue Italia “… nobody needs another pair of jeans, or a t-shirt, or some sweatpants”. Dipping them all in black is not the answer. 159|kode...

Kode| Every band has their story, tell us how it all started for The 1975? The 1975| We met at school. Hann come up to me, probably at about 13, and said ‘Do you wanna like… play drums in my band?’ There was no real scene in our town and we were all looking for some way of expressing ourselves, I suppose. Some woman called Sheila started gigs for underage kids (she was like a hippy council worker) and they soon turned into a riot. We would go and play there, doing covers of punk songs and the theme from Ghostbusters. After doing that for a while we wrote a song and thought, “Let’s just do this! This is much better than going to school or work.” We then locked ourselves away in a small room for the best part of a decade whilst the world went on around us. Kode| “The 1975” is a very interesting name, especially because none of you were even alive then, how did you guys come up with the name? The 1975| When I was 19 I went on holiday to the northern part of Majorca. I went on loads of long walks and came across a beautiful Spanish villa. On a deckchair in the porch sat this artist. We sparked up a conversation and I ended up staying there all day. It was like some kind of 60s vintage haberdashery: original Beatles records, signed Elvis shit, a photo of him with Hendrix. He showed me his library and gave me all of that Beat generation literature I’ve mentioned before in interviews. I didn’t start reading any of it until about 6 months later but when I eventually did, I found this mental page of scribbling’s. As I read I realized it was a suicide note from a previous owner. The final line was at the bottom of that page was dated ’1st June. The 1975′. When it came to naming the band we struggled for ages, until we realized it had been there all along, it was perfect. Kode| You guys have really been a standout over the past few years with some great songs and melodies. Do you guys write your material collectively or is one of you the poet? The 1975| It starts on the computer, with a sound. The creation of a part, it’s created in a project, so it becomes the framework of a song immediately. And then we’ll take that rough version of the song, I’ll put it on an iPod or something, and I’ll have it, and I’ll lie in a room and listen to it a thousand times over and gradually add to it. We write everyday, it’s the heart of the band. All the songs start with George and myself. Kode| There’s so much rich musical history in the UK from The Rolling Stones to The Beatles, who keeps ‘The 1975’ so inspired? The 1975| Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Prince, Sigur Ros, Roberta Flack, Whitney, TLC, and My Bloody Valentine - the list is endless. We create like we consume - I think access to information, genres and culture has become so easy with the internet and that is shown in how we create our music. We soak up inspiration from everything. Kode| You guys have been touring non-stop and will be up until 2015. There has to be some amazing times happening on the road let us in on some of the hijinks and experiences. The 1975| Imagine if you’re home and you throw a party in your hometown and 50 people turn up, that’s an amazing feeling. Imagine that in a different city every night, for thousands of people, that’s like a really amazing feeling. So yeah, it’s a lot of fun. BUT there is a rule on the road.... Never to speak about what really goes on! Kode| With there being 4 of you there has to be things about each other that can sometimes annoy one another, who can we always expect to be on time and who can we always count on to be late? And how do you smooth out your disagreements in order to keep a favorable environment? The 1975| We have been friends for as long as I can remember and have grown up together in this band, we have a freedom in the depth of our relationships that I don’t think most people in our position have. It means we can be as honest as we want with each other with the understanding that each of us are totally accepted by the others. Honesty and acceptance as obviously the cornerstones for good relationships, we genuinely love each other and I couldn’t imagine this band without all of the elements that each member brings.

Kode| Now we know being on tour must be amazing, we’ve all heard the stories of the crazy after parties, groupies, and what not, who could we consider the party boy and who’s the most likely to get the girl? The 1975| Ha, I couldn’t possibly comment on that!!!! BUT what I will say is we feel incredibly lucky to be able to travel the world playing shows to fans who understand and relate to our music, that connection between another human being and our music is what we strive for. I remember the first time I realized the power of that connection and I guess the duty we have as artists to our fans and the pursuit of art in general. We had just played a show in some city in the north of England and afterwards a couple came up to me and thanked me for our “Sex” EP. They went on to tell me how they had met at a party through a shared conversation about how much they both liked our band and how subsequently they had fallen in love with each other to the “Sex” EP. In that moment I was blown away and incredibly humbled, it was a special moment I will always remember. Kode| You guys have worked exceptionally hard to get here, what has that journey been like for you and where do you see it all going? It has to be exhilarating to be already headlining your own shows. The 1975| We started playing together about 10 years ago, and genuinely did not expect our popularity to accelerate in the way that it did after we released the album, music was always for us first and foremost and was never about an agenda or career plan, that still is a very alien concept for me to get my head around. It’s very humbling to see people reacting so positively to the band. For the future i think we just want to continue being as honest as we possibly can in the creation of our music, we are already about half way through writing our second album and we are very excited about making it next year. We feel pretty fortunate to be where we are and although we do work hard and sometimes get very tired we fully appreciate our position. We basically get to do what we love 24 hours a day 365 days a year! Kode| You guys’ most recent self-titled album “The 1975” debuted at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. What was the inspiration behind this album and why do you think the fans resonated with it so well? The 1975| The album really is a soundtrack to our formative years, as I said we have been playing together for 10 years and everything we have experienced and gone through individually, and as a band has gone into this record. I think our songs are so personal to me lyrically - so specific - that people can kind of find themselves in there, you know what I mean? What I have realized is that the human connection that you speak of, that’s the most important thing. You can spend months working on the sonics and sound of a record or a track, but if it doesn’t have that immediacy of emotion, if it doesn’t take you somewhere personally - what’s the point? All of these songs at some point have been the most important things in my life. Kode| You guys are very stylish and have a very chic downtown sentiment to your look, who are some of your favorite designers and who claims best dressed? The 1975| Black is our mantra. My friend Emma says that “black” and “expensive” seem to be my thing. I wear a lot of women’s shirts. I also have about 10 pairs of Nudie Jeans. I buy a lot of clothes but always end up leaving them in venues or hotels, I just got some amazing Prada boots, actually its the second time I have bought them as I wore the first pair everyday until they wore out! Kode| You guys have a long road ahead of you and a lot of people along for the ride, how do you all see ‘The 1975’ evolving as young men and as a band? The 1975| As men, individuals and as a band I would just like to continue as we are - four friends sharing in the pursuit of excellence. When we started it was purely for the joy of playing and creating music, we had no false motives driving us to be “cool” or part of a scene, no outside influences debasing what we did as people or musicians, I think we were genuine outsiders and I guess we feel most comfortable there without the rules a lot of bands seem to pander to and have enforced on them. I like to think that we will always hold that principal close to our hearts, it’s the soul of the band. We’re playing the biggest shows of our lives in the autumn across the UK, Europe and America. We’ve already started work on our new album, I want to release it exactly 2 years to the day after the first record came out. ¬¬¬ Kode| If the 1975 was a ship it would be called The 1975| We would be called “libertatia”. K: Harmonizers are going crazy over your latest song ‘BO$$’! How would you describe your hot new single in one word? Ally- Sassy, Dinah- Independent, Lauren-Fun, Normani-Confident, Camila-Bass K: When the video to ‘BO$$’ was leaked critics questioned the video for not being age appropriate and too sexy. How hard is it to be role models to thousands and living up to other people’s expectations at the same time? And what were your feelings in regards to the video and its direction? Lauren: It’s unrealistic to both be a role model and meet everyone’s expectations. Everyone has a different expectation and a different idea of what’s appropriate and what isn’t. I think with this video we made a decision for ourselves, being the young adults that we are (ages 17-21 the majority being 18 and over) to do what was appropriate for us. For us, being authentic and true to who we are and who we want to be is what’s important. If people assume otherwise, or pass judgment on something because we’ve grown up and are starting to explore what that is through our music, we can’t really do anything about any of it. I think what’s important though is for our message to come across and what we portray in that video and in that song is that we feel confident and comfortable in our skin, we are going to dress the way we feel confident and good about ourselves, and we are making that decision for ourselves. The song and video are meant to be fun, upbeat, not-in-yourface way of addressing being independent and holding your own as a woman in this society; being successful and pursuing your dreams. We appreciate being looked up to as role models but we’re growing up and finding ourselves in this world too, we just have to do it in front of a camera. K: You ladies will be releasing your very first album this fall; do you have a title for the album yet and what can we expect from the sound? Camila: We don’t have a title yet. We’re working on the title & debating some different options. As far as what people can expect, Boss is a good example of the overall message of “female empowerment” that we’re going for with this album. It’s a combination of who we are and who we want to be as young, independent women. Also because we have such different music tastes, each of us have a different way of connect with the album. For example, Lauren likes a song that is more vulnerable, I like a song that is more melodically structured, Dinah likes a song where the bass is bumping. Lauren: It caters to a bunch of different audiences and genres. K: Being the five amazing and talented young women that you are there must have been many different ideas during your creative process, what was it like working together as a group on this album? Normani: We all have our input & creative conflict is definitely necessary. The songwriters really helped us along with the process and gave us the chance to really say what we wanted to say through the song- what we wanted the message to be. Or if we didn’t feel comfortable with a certain part of the lyrics or the musicality of the song production, they gave us the freedom to change things. K: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why? Dinah: Jessie J or if we collaborated with a guy, I’d say Chris Brown! Camila: Iggy Azalea. Lorde would be really cool too. Normani: Chris Brown or Sam Smith Ally: Oh yeah, Sam Smith would be awesome! K: Earlier this year you opened for Demi Lovato’s ‘Neon Lights Tour’, did Demi give you any advice during the tour and what was one of you’re favorite moments while touring? Normani: She told us just to make sure it’s a fun experience for everyone. It can kind of get monotonous because we do it over and over. But you have to make it fresh and find inspiration within each new show and make it new for people seeing it for the first time. Ally: The finale was definitely our favorite moment! Normani: Everyone got silly string & pies and stormed the stage. Dinah and I fell over! Dinah: Everyone was slipping all over the stage it was so fun! And I pieed Demi in the face!

K: Each of you ladies have your own individual style when it comes to fashion. How would you describe that style, and who do you look to for fashion inspiration? Ally: I like to experiment with different things. I don’t like to just stick with one style. I use to do a lot of neon and stuff, which I still love, but I’ve grown into more mature colors. I like to play around & wear whatever kind of fits my body. I like prefer shorts & dresses. I really look up to JLOshe’s just a fashion icon. She always rocks what she wears & there’s never a dull moment for her looks. Camila: I love Alexa Chung & Zooey Deschanel. Lauren: I would say Lana Del Rey is a huge inspiration & 90’s Winona Ryder- 90’s fashion in general. Dinah: I think I like a mix of both Ciara & Kim Kardashian’s styles. I like how Kim Kardashian keeps it classy and I also like to have a little swag going on (like Ciara). I like the 90’s era too- like TLC’s fashion. And I love Zendaya! Normani: I love Sarah Jessica Parker- she can basically pull off anything and she makes it look so elegant & classy. She’s not afraid to take risks. I love how fashion forward she is. I would rather dress up than down. And I love Rhianna’s style she always makes a bold fashion statement & I love to try bold statements. K: Since starting your career together on X Factor and having come so far, how does it feel to be compared to iconic girl groups such as Destiny Child and Spice Girls? Normani: It feels great to be compared to iconic girl groups just because we’re so fresh in the game. Lauren: its an honor to be compared. We hope we hold our own too! K: You guys were just recently nominated for your very first MTV VMA, that is a huge accomplishment. Especially not even having an album out yet, you must be overrun with feelings. What’s it like to be on Fifth Harmony right now? Camila:- We literally lost every piece of our sanitity that we had when we heard the news that we were nominated. I started sobbing! We’ve all watched the VMAs since we were little & last year we freaked out that we were even getting to go. And it’s such a huge iconic thing that everyone watches. Just the fact that we’re nominated is an honor AND we’re nominated against people we listen to- its amazing. Lauren: It’s such an honor. Camila: Imagining us winning it and being on that stage and in the same room with people like Katy Perry, Rhianna & Taylor Swift- artists that inspired us to want to become what we are today is insane. K: Being a girl group yourselves you ladies must look up to some of the greats such as The Supremes, En Vouge, Destiny’s Child, Pussycat Dolls, The Labelles, etc. What’s it like following in their footsteps? Dinah: Its really cool that we have so many empowering women to lookup to. Normani: We can take a lot from them and learn a lot. Lauren: We hope to hold our own with our new album coming out and then we can be added to that list! By|Roshada Powell
