Königswinter and Drachenfels

With the world’s oldest rack railway, on a donkey, or on foot you can ascend Drachenfels to its Romanesque castle ruins. From there you will be able to enjoy a magnificent view of the Rhine Valley and see Hotel Petersberg on the mountain opposite, which in the course of history was often the arena for political talks – during the Afghanistan Conference in 2001, for example. Halfway up Drachenfels you can visit Schloss Drachenburg, which the Bonn stockbroker Stephan von Sarter had erected in the late 19th century. Today it houses a museum that presents the haute-bourgeois domestic culture of the Wilhelmine Era and a permanent exhibition of the eventful history of the castle.

City tour of Bonn

Duration: 4 hours

Fee: € 360.- in a foreign language

After a stroll through the narrow lanes of the old town of Bonn, the charm of this 2000-year-old city will enrapture you. You will quickly understand why Casanova regarded Bonn so highly. Not least was surely its quality of a royal capital that essentially still characterizes the city today. The Cologne archbishop-electors Joseph Clemens and Clemens August from the Wittelsbach dynasty erected the imposing town hall as well as the palaces, which the university still uses today. In 1770 Ludwig van Beethoven, Bonn’s most famous son, saw the light of day. For more than 100 years his birthplace has served as a museum. Only a few steps away, the Romanesque minster of Saints Cassius and Florentius dominates Münsterplatz. During a coach tour you will be able to view the meanwhile historic sites of German federal politics. We will pass the Haus der Geschichte der Deutschen Bundesrepublik (House of German History) and see the last plenary hall, today a conference centre. Flanking your path are other former government embassy buildings of the past as well as some of the ministries that did not move to Berlin. Without interior visits.

If you are not travelling in your own coach, we will be glad to book a coach for you (at an additional charge).

Excursions & Day Tours

Guided tour along the Rhine

Duration: 10 hours

Fee: € 700.- in a foreign language, additional costs for Rhine ferry and/or cruise ship

The much extolled beauty of the Rhine becomes quickly evident on this trip along the river. Numerous castles line the Rhine Valley. Vineyards on steep slopes and picturesque villages invite you to wine tastings. Two of the most beautiful Rhine castles, rediscovered in the period of Rhine romanticism are Marksburg above Braubach near Koblenz and Stolzenfels Castle, which was erected by Karl-Friedrich Schinkel within the old Romanesque foundations of the former castle. We will pass original sites of German history such as the former imperial stronghold Burg Hammerstein, into which Henry IV fled from his son, with the crown insignia. Often there are tragic sagas surrounding the Rhine and its castles, above all that of the Lorelei. On this tour they come alive again. What’s the deal with the hostile brothers, the ‘mouse tower’ or the seven stone virgins? If you ask yourself like Heinrich Heine did, ‘I know not, what does it mean…’ – then you will find some answers on this tour.

If you are not travelling in your own coach, we will be glad to book a coach for you (at an additional charge).

Fee: € 135.- in a foreign language

In this walking tour through the old town your guide presents the most important information about the cityʼs history in a relaxed and easy manner appropriate to the respective age group. How did people live in the Middle Ages?

Walking tour through the old town and the Cathedral‘s exterior (withour interior visits)

Duration: 2 hours

Fee: € 190.- in a foreign language

Cologne is colorful and vibrant, old as well as new, cool but also relaxed. People from Cologne are tolerant, talkative and “jeck” (a little crazy). People from Cologne are ... so many things. It all began with the Romans, who made their mark for 500 years. In the Middle Ages, Cologne began constructing a XXL cathedral. Why so huge and why so gothic? And where did all the money come from? Other than that, what is this carnival thing all about? And how did they move on after 1945? Rebuild, party, and forget? Experience the 1000 facets of our exciting city and consider the tour as a perfect preparation before you visit the Cathedralʼs interior.

Walking tour of Roman Cologne with visit to Romano-Germanic Museum (at Belgian House)

Duration: 2 hours

Fee: € 190.- in a foreign language

We discover COLONIA all the way the Romans did: per pedes. This search for evidence partly follows the course of the Roman city walls, partly right through the middle of the former Roman city, which today is still the centre of Cologne. Did the Romans also stroll along the “Hohe Straße”? What is special about the “Hafenstraße”?

As the majority of the hidden treasures of our Roman forefathers are to be seen in the Romano-Germanic Museum, we round off our exploration of COLONIA with a visit to this unique museum.

Walking tour of Roman Cologne with visit to Roman excavations below St. Martin church

Duration: 1.5 hours

Fee: € 160.- in a foreign language

Alternatively, this tour can also be combined with one of the many excavations from the Roman period that have remained visible: Underneath the Romanesque St. Martin church are the remains of a Roman sports facility and the foundations of warehouses.
