We all dream of a world without cancer. In Cologne, we join all our forces to get a little closer to this dream every day. Oncology is in a constant state of 昀氀ux – new technologies, diagnostic procedures and treatment options are ever setting new standards in the treatment of almost all types of cancer. And with increasing digitalization, this process is getting faster every day.
In order to not only keep pace with this development, but also to decisively shape and drive it forward, no less than four university hospitals decided to pool their expertise in 2018. The university cancer centers in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf formed the CIO – the Center for Integrated Oncology. Only one year later it became a Center of Excellence awarded by the German Cancer Aid. An international panel of experts has certi昀椀ed that the CIO has signi昀椀cantly advanced cancer medicine and provides patient care at the highest level. Many of CIO‘s experts are leaders in their respective 昀椀elds and make important contributions to national guidelines for the treatment of various cancers. With its unparalleled combination of expertise, the CIO is capable of
treating all types of tumors and has a wide range of therapeutic approaches. Answer Dr. Neubauer: We are pioneers in utilizing advanced laser technologies to treat benign prostate enlargement. Techniques such as holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) and diode laser therapy are safer, more e昀昀ective, and result in fewer complications compared to traditional methods. These approaches enable us to treat patients with normal to very large prostate volumes endoscopically, eliminating the need for open surgery.
For men with moderate complaints, we o昀昀er an innovative solution called REZUM vapor ablation. This minimally invasive procedure uses steam to treat the a昀昀ected tissue, providing an e昀昀ective and safe alternative to long-term medication.
Question HC: Your clinic is renowned for being a pioneer in brachytherapy. Can you explain what that involves?
Answer Dr. Neubauer: Prostate cancer treatment has advanced significantly, offering a range of well-established and effective options. Brachytherapy is a state-of-the-art radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer. It delivers numerous benefits, including fewer side effects, minimal impact on quality of life, and cure rates that are comparable to or better than conventional radical surgery.

With its high number of cases, the West German Prostate Center (WPC) is one of the largest treatment centres in Europe. It o昀昀ers the entire spectrum of diagnostic and treatment options for prostate diseases. Compared to conventional radical surgery, brachytherapy promises signi昀椀cantly fewer side e昀昀ects and a lower impact on quality of life with equally good or even better cure rates. The WPC is also one of the pioneers in the use of modern laser techniques for the surgical treatment of benign prostate enlargement. Compared to conventional prostate excision, modern laser procedures such as holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) and diode laser therapy are more e昀昀ective, lead to fewer complications and reduce the likelihood of furthersurgery.Evenmenwithverylargeprostatevolumescanbetreated endoscopically and do not need to undergo open surgery.

Germany´s largest endometriosis center is located in Cologne. Led by professor Thomas Römer, M.D., head of the department of OB/Gyn at the Academic Hospital Cologne Weyertal, it was certi昀椀ed in 2009 as one of Germany´s 昀椀rst centers for endometriosis.
Endometriosis is a chronic but benign women´s disease. Specialized doctors are needed for the diagnosis because the symptoms are atypical mostly: from chronic pain of the lower belly, very strong pain around the time of menstruation or ovulation, pain during sex, a dilated belly, and irregular bowel movement to pain during the passing of water, frequent urination pain during a bowel movement or bleeding by the bowels during the menstruation or the unattained desire to have children.
It may take time until the endometriosis is diagnosed. Estimate up to ten percent of women su昀昀er from endometriosis. Yearly more than 40.000 women get a new diagnosis of the disease. The symptoms cut down the everyday life and the quality of life of the concerned patients severely.
Thanks to outstanding specialists in that 昀椀eld the multiple certi昀椀ed center for endometriosis became the largest center with about 2.200 patients and 1.200 minimally invasive surgeries yearly and has a great reputation – in Germany and worldwide.
