Koki Maeda Architectural & digital heritage Portfolio

Born and raised in a little town in Japan, I spent my childhood surrounded with rich nature of mountain and river with modern townscape where local shrines and RC buildings co-exsist. That strong contrast of the new and old inspired me to study architecture, and the universal spirituality that buildings acquire over time introduced me to architectural conservation. My current passion is focused on the harmonisation of historic buildings and modern solution, which is not only design intervention but also exploring the possibility of digital contents apllied to heritage.

“SHITAYA Cultural Perspective” Rethink urban voids in Tokyo through adaptive use of old elementary school

Society

Plan: Regeneration of Shitaya-district

Many Japanese have social anxiety today whiche cannot be explained. I presume it’s because the modern society makes it difficult to have our own perspecives toward culture and life , where peole live homogenied life and the tradition is getting separated and evaluated by foreign tourists. Japanese used to wear glasses with which we could perceive things in an individual way, allowing full of imagination. Sometimes it was animals, and sometimes monsters and artistic projection. I believe we have to acquire our own cultural perspective through new glasses and plants can be the catalyst.

Shitaya Primary School is historic icon in the community, built in 1928. Ignored for more than 20 years after diagnosed as not satisfying the current structural standard against earthquake, it is about to be demolish

Separate L-shape structure to reduce the over load and ill-balance of the centre of gravity

Protect the structure with big roof. Use expansion joint and arched structure not to let the roof put much burden

Demolish the ground of 2nd and 3rd floor and put soil onto the ground floor. Through the skylight, natural light lay on the ground floor

TRANENT CONSERVATION AREA

Tranent once flourished as mining town when miners establishe rich variety of cottages and other historic houses. However, the town is declining in the past several decades after the rest of coal mine was closed. There boundary walls running around the town , which determined define the conservation area and is the testimony of history of the town. WIth historical photos taken in the town, people can re-bond the sense of community and be aware of conservativation of them.

Heritage Documentation Melrose Abbey

Melrose abbey is a monastic ruin at Scottish Border from 12th century. As a Scheduled monument, local authority has preserved it as it was. The abbey is known for its many carved decorative details and has been perfect source of Romanticism works such as ones by W. Turner and Sir Walter Scott. Thus, it is crucial to record the current state of the heirtage, which can be damaged at any chance. This project explores the digital documentation of the property and visual exhibition of the content. "If thu wuldst view fair Melrse aright, Go visit it by the pale mnlight;" Walter Sctt
