Sarah Harding
DEEP Diving into the
big story of the week
‘A shining star’ Emotional tributes pour in for the ‘electric’ yet ‘soft-hearted’ t was with huge sadness that we learned last week Sarah Harding had died of breast cancer, passing away at the age of 39. The Girls Aloud singer was diagnosed with the disease last summer and had been sharing her journey with fans online, but her devoted mum Marie confirmed the tragic news on Sarah’s Instagram page on Sunday 5 September. In an emotional tribute, she wrote, “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day. She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah, and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved. I know she won’t want to be
remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright, shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead.” Sarah first achieved fame as one fifth of the girl band Girls Aloud, after winning a place in the group on 2002 reality show Popstars: The Rivals. And from the start, her powerful voice, striking good looks and effervescent personality helped to propel the band to instant fame. The group went on to have 20 consecutive top-ten hits, and six top-ten albums before they officially split in 2013. Sarah then landed some impressive acting roles, notably on Coronation Street and the film St Trinian’s 2, as well as releasing solo music. In 2017, she won Celebrity Big Brother, proving she still had that star quality and likeability in abundance. Following the announcement of Sarah’s death, there was an outpouring of love for the vivacious singer, not least from her Girls Aloud “sisters”, whose grief was palpable in their words.
Nadine Coyle said that she was devastated by the news, adding, “I can’t think of words that could possibly express how I feel about this girl and what she means to me. I know so many of you will be feeling this way.” Nicola Roberts shared some throwback pictures with Sarah, writing, “My heart is aching and all day everything we went through together has raced round my mind. Especially this last year since her diagnosis, as hard as the year has been, our new memories are strong in my heart.” Sarah shared her cancer diagnosis with fans last August, saying she was undergoing gruelling treatment against the disease, which had spread to other parts of her body. And while all five members of Girls Aloud had not been close in years – there were rumours of fighting within the group – they all rallied around Sarah, taking a girls’ holiday together at Soho Farmhouse. In her recent memoir Hear Me Out, Sarah recalled that they had spent the time away reconnecting

and reminiscing, laughing affectionately at old clips of their 2006 fly-on-the-wall documentary Girls Aloud: Off The Record. It’s clear that time meant a lot to Sarah and the other girls, as Nicola summed up in her emotional post. “A part of me or us isn’t here any more and it’s unthinkable and painful and utterly cruel. She would have loved your messages today. Electric girl, you made us.

Loving life with Kimberley Walsh
You gave it everything and still with a smile.” Kimberley Walsh described Sarah’s one-of-a-kind personality perfectly in her moving post, writing, “Your fire burned so bright, and you loved, lived and laughed so hard.” Sarah was known for her rebellious attitude and unabashed behaviour, perhaps best summarised in one particular iconic moment. Having previously been nominated for three BRIT awards, Girls Aloud finally won in 2009 for their epic single The Promise. After the band politely accepted the award with relatively restrained excitement, Sarah grabbed the microphone from bandmate Kimberley and shouted, “It’s about time!” to the crowd, who cheered and laughed. The moment encapsulated her anarchic character and solidified her place in pop history for fans. Last week, bandmate Cheryl was keen to acknowledge how painful Sarah’s death would be for her fans, as well as her friends and family. “Although we knew this day would arrive, I am somehow still feeling at a loss for words that our stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind and soft-hearted girl has departed,” she wrote on Instagram. “As I try to navigate my way through these painfully strange and horribly unfamiliar waves of disbelief and finality I am experiencing, I wanted to extend my condolences to all of our GA

fans. We were like an extended family for so long and we know so many of you by name. She was so grateful, and you really lifted her spirits when she needed you most. I also realise so many will be deeply affected by the circumstances of Sarah’s
you brought to the world.” Louis Walsh said, “She was always fun and the life and soul of the party. Anytime she came to Dublin in the early days, we went out to the Pod nightclub and she would be the last to leave.” Pete Waterman called her “a lovely, lovely person”, adding that she was always “full of life”. In 2014, Sarah revealed she had quit the capital and all the parties, and moved to the country
‘Your fire burned so bright… you loved and lived so hard’ passing… I am sending you all so much love. I love you, Sarah… farewell.” Sarah’s lust for life was also remembered by other members of the music industry. Geri Horner, a judge on Popstars: The Rivals, wrote of Sarah, “You’ll be remembered for the light and joy
to embrace a new life with her dogs, saying, “When I lived in London, there was something going on every night of the week and you never wanted to miss out. I always wanted to be the life and soul. That’s not my priority any more, I’ve got five animals at home. I love animals – I think they

are the best therapy ever.” Sarah released a song – Wear It Like A Crown – in March, donating the profits to The Christie NHS Foundation where she was receiving her treatment. She called her doctors and nurses “actual angels” at the time and was keen to help raise money for the charity. Since her death, the treatment centre has announced it is planning research, partly funded by the proceeds Sarah raised, into preventing breast cancer in women aged between 30 and 39, who have no family history of the illness. In her book, Sarah explained that she had first noticed a lump in her breast at the end of 2019, and was told to schedule in an MRI scan. After COVID-19 struck and the country went into lockdown, she ended up putting off the

appointment. In her book, she encouraged people to get checked and treated in time. “Writing about my cancer, I found myself thinking, ‘Do I want everyone to know this?’” she said in an interview earlier this year. “But I kept thinking that if there was a chance just one person who read my story decided to get checked and was treated in time, then it was worth it… And writing the book has been cathartic. It’s made me realise I’ve had a full life and been able to achieve things the teenage me could only ever have dreamt of.” Rest in peace, Sarah. n

t was a night to celebrate triumph, resilience and recovery as – eight months after COVID delayed proceedings – the stars flocked to London’s O2 Arena for the 26th annual National Television Awards. But while the red carpet was flooded with TV’s biggest stars, the stage belonged to one woman alone: Kate Garraway. The Good Morning Britain presenter picked up the award for Authored Documentary for Finding Derek, her deeply personal and moving account of her husband Derek Draper’s ongoing battle after contracting COVID. And there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as she took to

the stage to accept the gong. “Thank you so much for voting,” said Kate, after receiving a standing ovation and breaking down in tears. “I wonder if the reason you did this is because our story is your story. I think we’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it’s livelihoods or mental health…We want the joy back, we want it to be over. But if you’re still living with the scars, the fight goes on.” The TV presenter won plaudits back in March for her searing honesty and vulnerability in Finding Derek. The documentary charted Derek’s year in intensive care, and followed Kate’s attempts to keep peace and stability at home with their two children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, while also returning to work and making their house more accessible in order for Derek – who holds the unenviable title of being the UK’s longestsurviving coronavirus patient – to receive 24/7 care at home. Accepting her award last week, Kate spoke directly to her husband, who, she’s said, is still receiving round-the-clock care, “still can’t talk really”, and sleeps up to 20 hours a day. “Most

important of all, Derek, you should be here,” she said. “He should have had the chance to tell his own story. Derek, you’re going to get the chance. The hope is real.” Later in the evening, the 54 year old posted a picture of the moment she FaceTimed her beloved husband to tell him they’d won, telling her followers, “For all who are struggling and holding on to hope – this is for you.”
‘We’ve all been touched by the pandemic’ The following morning – which happened to be her and Derek’s wedding anniversary – Kate thanked voters again on GMB and opened up more about their daily struggles. “Everyone has a Derek in their life, or a Billy or a Darcey. Hopefully, this is for everyone going through the pandemic and is to tell people to keep going.” She added that, while Derek’s body is free of the virus, “The damage has been inflicted to the organs in his body from the top of his head to the tip of his toes… The recovery is still very slow and you still feel him fighting.” n

n her first public appearance since an alleged assault left her needing hospital treatment, Katie Price walked the red carpet at the NTAs with her eldest son Harvey. The former glamour model looked every bit the proud mum as they celebrated their emotional documentary Harvey & Me being nominated in the Authored Documentary category. Harvey, 19 – who was born with Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic condition that affects his body, appetite, behaviour and learning development, and is also autistic – had headphones on to protect him from the noise of the crowds. And, although they didn’t win, Katie – who has alleged she was assaulted by a man at her Essex home last month – thanked everyone for their support. “Thank you all so much,”
she wrote. “We’ll look forward to sharing the next stage of Harvey’s progress with you in the follow-up documentary, Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next.” Katie, 43, was also joined by her younger sister Sophie at the event, but noticeably absent was Carl Woods, who earlier in the week had taken to Instagram to make a public statement. “I have remained quiet until now due to the investigation,” he wrote. “However, I have found it so difficult to keep quiet on social media due to shocking abuse I have received. Anybody who thinks I hit Katie, you’re completely delusional and have no idea of the reality of the situation. I have never and never would do anything to hurt Katie. e may have seen Ant McPartlin on many a red carpet, but the NTAs were a big deal for the 45 year old this time around, as he and new wife Anne-Marie made their debut as a married couple. The pair – who tied the knot just over a month ago, at a star-studded ceremony, before jetting off to Portugal for their honeymoon – posed together on their way into the O2, with Ant in a classic tux and Anne-Marie in a stunning lemon-yellow gown, as well as teaming up with Declan Donnelly and his wife Ali Astall for some red-carpet snaps. Put those Anne-Marie and Ali were there to with the support their husbands in their 20th others year of being nominated for the Best Presenter Award, which they went on to win, much to fellow nominee Piers Morgan’s disgust. In their acceptance speech, Ant said, “We were talking in the car on the way here and the first year we won an NTA, Tony Blair was the prime minister and Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League. It just goes to show how long ago it was. But do you know what? This one means the most. Twenty years. This is really, really special. You have no idea how special this is.” n

She’s got her eyes on the prize e used to be obsessed with his golden balls, but it’s now the era of his peachy bum. Victoria Beckham blessed the world last week with a cheeky (sorry, we couldn’t resist) snap of her husband David chilling in the pool. As well as capturing his lean, tanned body in all its glory, the picture also revealed more than a little slice of his pert derrière. Knowing exactly the kind of havoc she’d just wreaked on the internet, Victoria, 47, captioned the Instagram post, “Happy Sunday! You’re welcome.” And, an insider tells us, that while this is the perfect way to show off Vic’s wry sense of humour, it’s also a bit of a warning to people that David’s backside very much belongs to her. “Vic has decided that if you can’t beat them, you might as well join them, so she posted that cheeky shot of him to mark her territory,” our Beckhams insider reveals. “She wants everyone to know she and David still very much fancy each other and are very satisfied in that department, thank you very much! David Furnish wrote, “Bottoms up!”, Vic’s US socialite mate Derek Blasberg commented, “It’s a full moon today!”, while Dawn O’Porter joked, “This is the most incredible act of generosity I’ve ever witnessed.” David and Victoria are back in the UK after spending the summer in Miami, where David’s football team are based. fter sharing that she and boyfriend Alex OxladeChamberlain had welcomed their first baby together a couple of weeks ago, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards finally revealed their son’s name last week. Posting two adorable photos of the newborn, Perrie introduced fans to Axel Oxlade-Chamberlain with the caption, “2 weeks of loving you. I’ve never felt love like this before!” Wrapped in a knitted blanket with a blue pom-pom hat on, baby Axel has no idea of the outpouring of love for him on social media. The post got over 2m likes, and celebrities such as Mollie King, Keith Lemon and Katherine Foster sent their love to the new mum.
Fans were quick to notice that Axel appears to be a tribute to his dad, with the letters in Alex’s name rearranged for the newborn. Some fans also suggested the name may have a link with Perrie, too. The 28 year old is named after rocker Steve Perry, the lead singer of her parents’ favourite band Journey, and it was suggested that Axel is a nod to Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose, making them both named after famous rock stars. Perrie had Axel just days after bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock gave birth to twins. Leigh-Anne, 29, hasn’t yet shared the names of her babies, and also only chose to share the twin surprise after they were born, telling fans, “We asked for a miracle, we were given two.” n

is wife Giovanna took home the crown in last year’s I’m A Celeb, so will it be back-toback reality TV victories in the Fletcher household? McFly star and dad-of-three Tom, 36, is trying his luck, ten years after bandmate Harry Judd took home the Glitterball…
What made you want to do Strictly this year? Secretly, somewhere deep down, I’ve wanted to do it since Harry did it ten years ago. But then, life just gets in the way. This year just kind of felt right. And my son Buzz [who’s seven], over the last couple of years, has become such a huge fan of Strictly. He gets really emotionally invested. When Chris Ramsey was in a couple of years ago, Buzz cried his eyes out when
he got voted out. Then when they asked if I would do it, I thought my son would love that. So, it’s my son’s fault. Has Harry given you any advice? I can’t shut him up about Strictly. But I don’t know whether to trust his advice or whether he’s secretly trying to steer me in the wrong direction, because he’s quite competitive.

What was the reaction like from your family? When I told my sister [actress Carrie Hope Fletcher], she burst out laughing in my face, and even now I can’t say the word “Strictly” without her cracking up laughing. Giovanna was really supportive.
‘I can’t shut Harry Judd up about it’ Are you nervous about the physical side of the show? I can’t even touch my toes! When I signed up at the beginning of the year, I thought, “I’m going to get in shape. I’m going to do yoga and Pilates and eat well…” And it just went out the window. I literally

Will you be practising your dance moves at home? I have tried doing a bit of dancing around the house, but my kids get embarrassed. They don’t want to watch. It’s a bit like watching your parents kiss – they’re looking at me dancing, like, “Eurgh, gross Dad, what are you doing?” So, I’m not sure what that says about my dancing ability.

insider close to the couple, who also claimed that they’d suffered “neglect” while working as senior royals. “Ideally, she’d like to come back in late September or October, especially if the plans for a public tribute to Princess Diana go ahead. But she has conditions: she wants guards by her and her family’s side 24/7, five-star lodgings, and an assurance that she’ll have full control over any press briefings, as well as her timetable while she’s here. She also wants Harry by her side at all times. Eyebrows were raised last week at reports the Sussexes have requested a private meeting with the Queen. Indeed, one insider said, “People are shocked by the sheer nerve of it” – especially as it comes following Harry’s recent announcement that he’s writing a memoir. But the couple have always insisted they have no ill will towards Harry’s grandmother and, according to our source, they’re keen to extend an olive branch to her personally – so long as Meghan has every guarantee that, this time, it’s on her terms. “Meghan and Harry are very aware that they still have a lot of critics in the UK,” we’re told. “Meghan, in particular, knows that her every move will be scrutinised, from their method of travel to what she wears. So, she says she’s taking the necessary steps to protect herself. There’s no way she’d let herself feel as vulnerable as she did the last time she was in the UK.” n CHARLOTTE OLIVER

t’s been 18 months since she waved goodbye to the UK – and she’s made it pretty clear that she’s not in any rush to return. So, there were a few surprised faces over at Buckingham Palace last week, after reports that Meghan Markle’s set to accompany Prince Harry on a flying visit back to Blighty. According to insiders, Harry and Meghan have requested a meeting with the Queen, as they hope to build bridges following a year of tension. They also want to introduce Her Majesty to her namesake – three-month-old baby daughter, Lilibet – and reacquaint her with their two-year-old son Archie. The Sussexes’ return comes just months after Meghan and Harry accused “The Firm” of “perpetuating falsehoods” about them during that interview with Oprah Winfrey, and also claimed they’d been subjected to racism by the family. And insiders tell us that Meghan won’t be bowing down to anyone. Instead, she’s issued a list of demands should the big visit take place. “Meghan’s return all depends on her receiving certain assurances,” says an

he’s eagerly counting down the last few weeks before her baby girl arrives, and now Stacey Solomon has spoken about her plans for the big day, revealing she’s considering a home birth. Speaking recently, the Loose Women star said she was still weighing up options, but that giving birth at home would mean that fiancé Joe Swash could be there for the entire process, as well as her mum Fiona (there are still COVID restrictions inside hospitals). What’s more, she added, it would minimise the risk of her or the baby contracting the virus. But, according to sources, Joe is far from thrilled at the idea, especially since the family are currently renovating their £1.2million Essex home – the famous Pickle Cottage. “Joe is really worried about the idea of a home birth,” says an

insider close to the couple, who share a busy home life with their two-year-old son Rex, plus Stacey’s sons Zachary, 13, and Leighton, nine, and Joe’s son Harry, 14, from previous relationships. “Pickle Cottage is absolute chaos at the best of times and he just doesn’t think she’s really thought this through. There’s still work to be done in the house, and Joe thinks it would be too much to also give birth there, especially if the other kids are around. He understands that Stacey is worried, but he’s told her that she’s going to be so much safer in the hands of medical professionals at hospital.” It’s clear that Stacey has been relishing every moment of her fourth pregnancy – especially since finding out she’s expecting a long-awaited girl. And last week, she celebrated the upcoming birth in style with a pink-perfect baby shower. But despite paying tribute to her body and her “pickle

She later confessed that she hadn’t felt ready and had wanted to “put him back in her belly”. Speaking last week, Stacey said she was still undecided. “[Having a home birth] lessens the COVID risk,” she said. “But then there is the risk if you need to be blue-lighted in and there is an emergency. It is trying to weigh up those options. I have never considered it this much before.” But, we’re told, Joe isn’t so torn – and he’s urging Stacey to go for a hospital birth. “She’s always so busy at home,” we’re told. “Joe just feels as thought it would be better for her to go to hospital and get some peace and quiet. He just wishes she would slow down and take it easy.” n CHARLOTTE OLIVER

e might have had a shit year in many ways, but we’ve had a bloody great year of television. And last week, the world of showbiz came together to celebrate at the TV Choice Awards. Taking place over Zoom – because of said shitty year – the ceremony was hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, and saw stars accepting prizes via video link or pre-recorded messages. Line Of Duty and Coronation Street were the big winners of the night, each taking home three awards, including Best Actor and Best Actress for Martin Compston
and Vicky McClure. Vicky accepted her award dressed in an Adidas tracksuit from the set of her latest project, while Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan channelled the glam of the regency period, accepting the award for Best New Drama in a metallic number. Ant & Dec will most likely be renting storage space for all of their awards, as they added to their stash with the prize for Best Reality Show. In their speech, the pair said they were particularly thankful of the award after all the hard work that had gone into making I’m A Celebrity… happen in Wales last year. n

et’s face it – late heatwaves aside, we’ve probably just about seen the last of the sunshine that our British summer is going to offer us. So, with the nights drawing in at a frighteningly alarming rate, there’s one wholesome antidote for any autumn melancholy that you might feel encroaching: the return of The Great British Bake Off. Navigating COVID restrictions

once again to bring us our favourite baking show, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood are back in the tent, as are Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, ready to keep us chuckling with their cake puns and general shenanigans. But the real excitement comes for us when we first lay eyes on the 12 delicious (and anxious) faces of the contestants. Who will we fall in love with this year? Who will have us on the edge of our sofas as
we watch their croquembouche melt under the lights? Whose tray bake will have us trembling? And whose swiss roll will have us salivating? As always, the casting team have found some prize puddings in these contestants, ranging from a Met Police detective who hand-paints her cakes, to a student who watched the first-ever Bake Off series when she was just nine years old… n KATIE HOLLOWAY
TOM, 28
Tom’s passion for cakes began at school. Before moving out of the family home, his mum called him the “midnight baker”, as she’d often wake up to a sweet treat in the morning.
JAIRZENO, 51
The Trinidadian-born baker likes to experiment with flavours, using Caribbean spices and his current favourite flavour combination: guava and chocolate. He’s also a keen runner and completed the 2012 London Marathon.

AMANDA, 56
The mum of two originally worked in advertising before becoming a detective in the Met Police. She loves starting the day with a cold-water swim before getting creative in the kitchen. She likes to paint directly on to her cakes, often with designs inspired by her daughters.
KERS! tish Bake Off
ROCHICA, 27
Rochica found her love for baking after an injury left her unable to dance – something she’d been doing since she was two. While she has started dancing again, she still loves baking cakes for her large Jamaican family.
“Ready, set… bake!”
JÜRGEN, 56
Having moved from Germany to the UK in 2003, Jürgen took up baking when he couldn’t find traditional German bread that he thought was up to scratch. He’s well-known in his family for his Jewish challah bread, as well as his trombone playing.
MAGGIE, 70
Why buy a cake or a loaf of bread when you can bake one? That’s Maggie’s approach, anyway. The retired midwife hopes that the thrill of delivering babies has prepared her enough for the excitement of appearing on GBBO.

The pair have been filming romcom Meet Cute in New York, and an insider tells us 27-year-old Pete’s charms have been working wonders on Kaley, 35. “Kaley and Pete hit it off right away,” we’re told. “Her divorce had been on the cards
for a while, so she was effectively single going into filming this movie at the start of August, and, of course, Pete was just coming to terms with his split from Phoebe [Dynevor]. He thought he’d be a lot more cut up about that than he was, and it’s a lot to do with this vibe he’s got going with Kaley that he’s been able to dust himself off and avoid moping about the past. The actress and UN ambassador spoke about her court battle in an interview last week, while launching her new book Know Your Rights, a guide for children to In happier times in 2014 know their rights under UN rules. Despite saying she couldn’t speak about her own situation, she said that her interest in children’s human rights had become deeply personal, after the “violation”. She was referring to an incident on

She added, “My 17 year old has been denied a voice in court” – again, referring to her and Brad’s legal battle. Angelina’s lawyers have previously said that three of their six children have

The actress also took another swipe at Brad while discussing his decision to keep working with now-disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein while they were married, despite her allegations that he’d assaulted her when she was 21. “We fought about it. Of course it hurt,” she said last week. But, despite alluding to the “damage” that she and her kids have incurred over the past five years, Angelina said she wanted to put things behind them. “I just want my family to heal,” she said. “I want everyone to move forward, including their dad. JAMES MIDDLETON
#35
They say that when you marry someone, you marry their entire family. So, we’re rather excited at the prospect of coupling up with James Middleton. After all, he’s very close to his oldest sister Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, meaning it’s only a matter of time before we’re invited to Christmas at Sandringham, right? It’s not just familial connections that have us lusting after the youngest Middleton (middle sister Pippa finishes the pack). Clearly, James is a goodlooking fella, who loves his outdoor activities – and doing them topless to boot. He’s also a dedicated dog lover, which instantly makes anyone more attractive. Woof.
SPLASH NEWS
Sadly, the 34 year old is spoken for – he’s engaged to financier Alizée Thevenet, and the pair had an adorable meet-cute involving one of James’ dogs (he has six), who made a beeline for Alizée at Chelsea’s South Kensington Club. Still, we can dream about the day that we get to marry a princess’ brother. Which is basically like marrying a prince… but with fewer public duties.

I remember learning all about f**king male orgasms and semen and not for a second learning about female ejaculation. The only things that girls were taught at my school were about periods and not getting pregnant. And that was literally it. There are still things about my
our cast, is awesome. And hopefully, we’re becoming more inclusive as the show goes on, too. Also, being one of the first shows to have an intimacy coordinator and championing things like that – working safely with sex. The Harvey Weinstein stuff and the #MeToo stuff has only just happened really, so now we’re in a very crucial time where we get to mould the future of our thinking and where we go from here. Trying to make it a much safer space for the kids that come after us. Being a young adult and doing a show about sex, you really need to make sure it’s mentally and physically safe. I think that, hopefully, the more that we have this dialogue – even down to having lovely interviewers with appropriate questions being asked to young cast members, and being respectful of the fact that we are human beings first and foremost – you can see how it’s going in a positive way. What’s the strangest place you’ve been recognised? P: I was in an art market in Ghana, and this guy was like, “Hey, you’re in Sex Education”. I was like, “I am”. And then he said, “Photo?” so I was like, “Yeah, sure, do you want
‘There are still things about my own body that I don’t know’ Tanya with Black Lives Matter – I find that disturbing the peace is bringing forward good action. If I’m feeling uncomfortable about something, I’ll think, “OK, good. Why?” I’ll try to work out why I feel uncomfortable. Be kind about what you’re saying, but understand that, by having these conversations, you’re making a positive change. What were your memories of actual sex education at school? T: Dreadful. I just remember the
own body that I don’t know. I’m really grateful that this show exists for young people today and just that they are more likely to interrogate and think, “Hang on, I don’t know what this is.” Kids these days are so much more knowledgeable than when we were at school and a large part of that, I think, is because of shows like this. What type of change do you hope that the show brings? P: It’s already done so much, and I wish for it to carry on. Even the characters that we’re seeing, even
a photo?” And he said, “Oh no, no. I don’t have a phone, I was wondering if you wanted a picture with me.” It was the weirdest, best thing ever. Can you top that, Tanya? T: I really can’t. I’m always surprised when anyone recognises me anyway, especially now during COVID, wearing a mask. The other day, I was on the train and I was wearing a mask, my glasses, my hat, and my headphones, and then this guy wrote on his phone, “Are you that girl from Sex Education?” I was like, “How do you know? Only this much of my face is visible through my glasses!” I just find that mad, because I feel completely invisible when I’m wearing a mask, yet still people come over. It’s quite bizarre. And, finally, can we expect a fourth series? T: Hopefully! We don’t know anything. P: If not, we’ll do our own weird podcast or something. T: Yeah, we’ll do a Lily and Ola spin- off! n

the end of the day and everybody turned around and were just very, very quiet. And I was like, “Oh, I’m sorry. I won’t talk about masturbation. So sorry!” I felt so weird. I forgot that I am normally on the set of Sex Education where you can talk about poo and, you know, masturbation and stuff! Has the show made you more confident talking about taboo subjects in general? P: Definitely. I don’t know about you, Tanya, but I feel way more comfortable talking about things that, before, I would have thought I shouldn’t. I think from this show – and even from this whole year,

Your weekly nose into nostalgia
THE GOLDEN YEARS heat finds out what it’s like to dance on the UK’s most beloved dance floor… Some things are guaranteed to make us feel warm and fuzzy: a tea-dunked Rich Tea, an adorable Instagram cat account… and that time of the year when Strictly Come Dancing begins. Yes, for the past 17 years, the Beeb’s celebrity dance competition has been a mainstay on the calendar. And with series 19 about to begin, we’re clutching our make-believe score paddles and readying ourselves to keeeeeeep dancing all over again. But what was it like to be on the other side of the spectacle during the golden years of
Strictly? (Yes, we know it’s still in its prime, but we’re nostalgic folk – we’re talking about the years when Bruce Forsyth still ran proceedings, and nothing sounded sweeter than a “10 from Len”.) Former pro dancer Robin Windsor gives heat the inside scoop… “When I first got the call, I was jumping all over the place, while trying to stay very subdued on the phone,” says Robin, who joined in 2010, and was paired up with Patsy Kensit. During his four-year tenure, he also partnered soap legends Anita Dobson and Lisa Riley, and Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden. “They said, ‘You can’t tell anybody yet’. Craig always has his claws out, darling
I called my mum. It really was a dream come true.” In its almost two decades, Strictly has solidified its status as the world’s most successful reality TV format (so says the Guinness World Records). Co-created in 2004 by Big Brother producer Richard Hopkins, it’s been exported to over 50 countries, has been debated in Parliament (when Arlene Phillips’ departure
‘THERE’S UPS AND DOWNS’
in 2008 led to an ageism row), and has been credited for sparking a renewed public interest in ballroom dancing. But it actually had its first outing in 1941, when BBC Radio broadcast dance lessons to boost war-torn morale. Then, from 1949 to 1998, it was Come Dancing, a TV show that ran regional dance competitions up and down the country. Strictly – which took its title from the film Strictly Ballroom – refreshed the franchise by pairing professional
dancers with celebrities. “I’d never worked with a celebrity before,” says Robin, who joined after a successful stint on Broadway, and still teaches and performs today. “So, for the first week, I went in every day thinking, ‘Oh my god, I’m dancing with Patsy Kensit.’ But then you realise they’re just normal people with high-profile jobs. You’re with them all day, so you almost become their therapist. Especially Patsy – she was fab, but so nervous. She’d just come out of her fourth divorce, but she left feeling like a new woman.” We already know that the show is demanding, but for a pro, the pressure is mind-blowing. “It’s so stressful,” says Robin. “You’re responsible for making sure your celebrity looks good, and there can be ups and downs during the week. Sometimes they’re just not suited to a dance, sometimes they don’t like the music. And then you do all the pro numbers, come in for filming [spin-off show] It Takes Two , and you also go and live where your celebrity lives. So, it’s really tough on the pros – more mentally and emotionally,

Impressive than it is physically.” But, he reassures us, there was always time for reprieve. “We’d head to the BBC bar after the show on a Saturday night and have one too many red wines,” he laughs. “I’d then go home a bit tipsy and choreograph next week’s dance… so some of my choreography is probably quite questionable!” When it comes to partnerships, dynamics can be hit and miss (it’s no secret there was no love lost between Nancy Dell’Olio and Anton du Beke). But producers work hard to make winning pairings. According to Robin, the pro has no say in the matter, but that doesn’t stop some pre-season campaigning. “Before the show, we’d all come together to learn the group dance,” he explains. “That’s when producers make any lastminute changes. So, when [former Girls Aloud singer] Kimberley Walsh was on in 2012, almost all the boys congregated around her, so that the producers would see them getting along. Everyone wanted the young pop star. But
Everyone wanted a “10” from Len
I realised over the years that these type of contestants were not necessarily the best for me. And I think that the producers got my four partners spot on.” He’s not wrong, especially when it comes to Emmerdale’s Lisa, who danced alongside Robin into the semi-finals that year. Their partnership created some legendary memories, especially the moment Lisa lifted Robin at the end of their cha-cha-cha. “I found out later that I’d originally been paired with [Olympic cyclist] Victoria Pendleton,” he

That undid six weeks of confidence-building for Patsy – I was so upset. But Craig is there to play a role, which he does brilliantly. Bruno Tonioli just makes a lot of noise at the end, but Len Goodman was the one who we always wanted to impress. He comes from the ballroom world.” Still, the most important people are the audience at home, which means that performing for the cameras is paramount. “There are about five or six cameras around you, plus a wonderful cameraman who runs around as you’re moving,” says Robin. “He has as much choreography as you have so he doesn’t get in the way! The only time he fell, he slid on a feather at Blackpool! But he saved the camera first.” As for his highlights, Robin has many, but dancing in the live shows at Wembley Arena – when he and Lisa performed their iconic Samba – ranks top. “Lisa jumped into the splits and Wembley just erupted,” he says. “Bruce couldn’t stop the chanting and clapping – we felt like Beyoncé. I get choked up just talking about it – it really was superstardom.” n CHARLOTTE OLIVER

tells us. “But in the group rehearsal, me and Lisa were just being silly with each other and we clicked instantly. The producers overheard us and realised that we’d be great together, so they swapped us around. Lisa wanted to show everyone that you don’t have to be a certain size to dance. She’ll admit this herself – everybody thought she’d be the joke contestant. So, I choreographed an Ann Widdecombe-style dance in week one. But as soon as we started rehearsing, I apologised and said I’d learned to never judge a book by its cover. She ended up using that as the title for her book.” As for those fateful Saturday nights, it all boils down to the judges. “It’s all a bit pantomime, but it can be really disheartening for the celebrity if we get bad comments,” says Robin. “I remember with Patsy, we’d convinced her to wear this nude dress covered in stones. She looked a billion dollars and I was so proud of her. Then Craig Revel Horwood said, ‘For me, it was all a bit cha-chachavvy, darling.’

THE STARS The calibre of celebrities on the show has always been pretty high, but every so often someone comes along, and you think, “How much did they have to fork out for them?” Does anyone remember actual Spice Girl Emma Bunton taking part in 2006? Paired with Darren Bennett, she made it to third place – beaten by Matt Dawson in second and Mark Ramprakash in first.

THE PASSION Pro Brendan Cole managed to bring passion to the show all by himself, but he got labelled a Lothario as soon as he stepped onto the dance floor with Natasha Kaplinsky in 2004. Paired with Claire King in 2014, he called her “spicy”, while she said she’d “rather eat cold toast” than have sex with him. We also loved it when he had a pop at the judges.

Love&stuff FLAVIA & JIMI
Spicing up the show
The Strictly curse goes both ways, and poor Vincent Simone was left broken-hearted when pro partner Flavia Cacace began dating her celeb partner Matt Di Angelo in 2007. They were together for three years until Flavia was paired with Jimi Mistry in 2010, and they fell in love, marrying in 2013.

Looking good, Austin
Being “Strictlyfied” is now a well-known process, but let’s take a moment to appreciate the hunks who paved the way for the bare-chested, faketanned hotties we see each series. It seems Gavin Henson could barely keep a shirt on in 2010. Honourable mention to Austin Healey in 2008, whose six-pack made many an appearance.
NATASHA AND BRENDAN
Brendan Cole and pro-dancer fiancée Camilla Dallerup were the very first victims of the Strictly curse, after he was partnered with newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky in series one. Brendan and Natasha denied an affair, but he did once say of the show, “It can ruin a marriage so easily.”
BEN AND KRISTINA
Russian bombshell Kristina Rihanoff had her fair share of success on Strictly – in the competition and in her love life. Boxer Joe Calzaghe left his girlfriend for the dancer in 2009, but they split in 2013, after she was partnered with rugby player Ben Cohen. Ben left his wife of ten years to be with Kristina.

NOW
BACK THEN, I WAS WEARING… Lots of tailored suits. I loved sharp dressing off-stage. NOW: Since lockdown, we’ve all got very casual, haven’t we? At the moment, I’m wearing lots of floaty trousers and sneakers. But I still put on a small heel when I go to a nice restaurant. YOU’D ALWAYS FIND ME SPLURGING ON… Clothes. I used to spend a lot more than I do now. For the red carpet, I used to design my own evening dresses and have them made. NOW: I buy more off the peg – it’s hard to find good dressmakers that will charge a reasonable price. I still love being glamorous, but I don’t go for things that are quite so eye-catching. I WAS HANGING OUT WITH… Paul [Daniels, Debbie’s late husband], and I did see celebrities like Gloria Hunniford and Christopher Biggins at charity events or at dinner parties, but we were also working all the time. NOW: Strictly’s Giovanni [Pernice] and I have this great friendship and make each other laugh a lot. BACK THEN, I USED TO FANCY… Movie stars like Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner. I used to say to Paul, “Just because you’re married, you’re still allowed to look at the menu!” THEN, I WAS MOST PROUD OF… Career-wise, it was when The Paul Daniels Magic Show won the Golden Rose of Montreux Award at the International TV Festival in 1985. The BBC hadn’t won it for 22 years. But my proudest moments are to do with my family. NOW: Getting into the final of Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, and later winning the Christmas special. That was a proud moment – you couldn’t beat it.

The showbiz legend still loves fancy dresses and Pornstar Martinis
NOW: Probably George Clooney, who actually lives ten minutes up the road from me! He moved to the area a few years ago, and I once got a glimpse of him in his car. I also like Jason Statham. He’s got that rough edge. MY GUILTY PLEASURE WAS… Definitely buying expensive clothes. Back in those days, people used to really get dressed up. You wouldn’t have gone to dinner in your jeans or casual trousers. NOW: It’s probably drinking cocktails. My favourite is a Pornstar Martini, and I love an Aperol Spritz. I actually just bought a few Pornstar Martini tins from Marks & Spencer to take out on the boat. THE MOST MEMORABLE STORY ABOUT ME: It wasn’t about me, but Paul used to wear a toupee. He let everybody know – he’d sneeze and make it come off at parties. Then he decided he didn’t want to wear it any more and the headline was, “Paul Daniels’ wig disappears.” It was the same day that Chernobyl had blown up and that was on the inside and Paul was on the front page. We couldn’t believe it. NOW: They always try to catch me with a man, and take photos when I’m just having lunch with my agent or with a male friend. I just laugh it off and think, “More fool you.” 18-24 September 2021 www.heatworld.com

How we’re rocking this bold trend
Bright, bold shades are everywhere right now – and green and pink is the colour combo of the moment. Whether you want to go all-out or simply nod to the trend, there are loads of ways to make this look suit your style – and we’ve got the tips and tricks to ensure you look and feel fabulous.
And yes, this combo is just as chic, whether you’re heading to the office or out for drinks with the girls. To make the look work for you, remember what you want to flatter or flaunt. Make your “best bits” the focal point of your outfit – whether it’s your waist, legs, petite frame or curvy shape. Think this look is not for you? The heat style team are here to show you how to wear the trend.
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU
● If head-to-toe is too OTT, team your brights with classic blue denim – it’ll instantly make the look easier to wear. They’ll skim your figure, too. ● If you want to emphasise your waist or create the illusion of an hourglass
shape, try styles that cinch you in, like wrap dresses, or simply add a belt for definition. ● Draw the eye away from the area you’d rather not focus on – for example, asymmetric hems, longer lines or fluted styles – to balance out your shape.

Instagram fitness queen Courtney
Black unveils her new cookbook
f you’ve spent any time looking at Courtney Black’s Instagram, you’ll know that she’s a fireball of energy. Whether she’s smashing out one of the punchy workouts from her app, or putting on her chef’s hat to whip up a meal in the kitchen, she’s passionate about making fitness and healthy eating easy and accessible for everyone. Her latest book, Fit Foods And Fakeaways (Thorsons, £14.99, out 16 Sept), is the perfect combination of your favourite Friday night meals made with a healthy twist and still tons of flavour. For Courtney, who used to suffer from an eating disorder, helping people discover nutritious, balanced and, most importantly, lip-smacking meals is her mission… How did you get into cooking? Growing up, I always made my own meals, as I didn’t like my mum’s cooking. I’m really passionate about recipes 18-24 September 2021 www.heatworld.com

and food, but when I suffered from an eating disorder, it was for all the wrong reasons. I wanted to cook my own food, so I knew exactly what went in it. But now I want to make really delicious meals and still keep them healthy. Are there any fancy ingredients in your recipes? I hate shopping. I just want to be able to go to my local Tesco and pick up everything I need, so most of the recipes use things you’ll already have in your cupboard.
And you’ve done loads of healthy takes on our favourite takeaway meals… Yeah, lots of people feel that they can’t enjoy certain foods or classify them as a “treat”, but why can’t we make these amazing meals lower in calories? Sometimes in restaurants, they will use unneccesary oils, meat with a higher fat content, or sauces that are high in calories. That’s great when you go out for a meal, but in your day-to-day cooking, there are so many simple ways to make dishes more nutritionally balanced. Do you feel it’s time we re-educated ourselves about healthy eating? “Healthy eating” is a bit of a toxic phrase, as people assume they can only eat chicken, broccoli, rice, fruit and yoghurt, and they feel that they need to cut out certain food groups. But a healthy diet is one you can follow every day and makes you feel good. It’s not about being restrictive, it’s about following a plan that is easily sustainable and doesn’t make you feel shit. Where do you get your recipe inspiration from? I love asking what my followers enjoy eating, or it might be something I’ve experimented with that I liked. I just love seeing if I can make foods in a healthier way, but still just as tasty. n

How good are you at sleeping? I have a massive silk eye mask, which is almost like wearing a bra on my face, and Matthew McConaughey’s bedtime story on the Calm app. I’m yet to make it past the first few minutes! Bargain beauty buy? I’ve just rediscovered soap. I’ve got this lovely Mango soap from Soap & Glory, which smells amazing. How do you stop yourself from feeling stressed-out? When I’m doing a night shift, I need to create boundaries about when I’m “working” and when I log off. I put on my emails that my hours are currently 8pm to 8am, and it just takes that layer of stress away. ■

I’ll have a coffee and read in bed, then cycle to my local bakery that serves these amazing pastries filled with melted cheese and chives. They’re divine! Do you do a lot of cycling? I got my bike repaired in lockdown, so I use it all the time. I’m working with OVO, who are promoting cycle routes around Glasgow. Cycling has been a great way to rediscover parts of my hometown that I hadn’t been able to before. What does self-care look like for you? I love cooking to really slow, chilled music as it allows me to zone out completely. I love those home kits – they challenge me to Spinning learn to cook something some choons totally new and different.

hit machine since her teens, pop powerhouse Becky Hill, 27, is just as serious about good mental health as she is about her music. Here, the singer with over 1.75billion streams on Spotify and ten Top 40 hits tells heat why she loves extreme exercise, how she’s learnt not to have too many rules, and why weekly therapy, meals out solo and tapping have all helped her stay well… How are you feeling about performing again? Performing is incredible. I’ve missed that dearly. It’s been scary getting back after so long. I had vocal surgery in January, so there was lots of anxiety over my voice holding up and whether I would be OK. It’s been lovely to get Having a relaxing strum
back out, but it’s the busiest I’ve ever been. What positives came out of lockdown for you? I found a rental in my home town [Bewdley in Worcestershire], by the river, with my brother, in the middle of nowhere. I bought bikes, badminton – random, wonderful stuff. My brother said, “This is like an adult school holiday.” We enjoyed going back to basics. I’ve always tried to spend free time with family. It definitely made me appreciate closeness to them. Do you find nature healing? In the first lockdown, me and my brother went hiking in the forest and along the river. We would go adventuring. You can’t get lost in London – in the forest, you can go anywhere. We had the best time in nature. That was one of the reasons my mental health was so good in the first lockdown. You forget living in the city how important nature is. What workouts do you love? I’m quite extreme. I got into Barry’s Bootcamp – you really can’t focus on anything other than not dying. But the endorphin rush is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. And someone who I’ve fallen completely in love with is

• Don’t have too many rules – I take care of myself. Always be kind and patient with yourself and have a good time.
• Acknowledge emotions – that’s key to good mental health. I sit with my feelings when I am feeling sad, accept responsibility when I’ve been angry, or sit with someone else’s feelings when they’re not feeling great.
• The female mental health app Clementine has hypnotherapy, meditation and guided experiences – and they do tapping. It’s superpowerful and quite voodoo! Incredible for moving emotion around and bringing positive connotations.
• I love mixing on the decks. Me and my boyfriend spend hours on them. It’s fun. You don’t take yourself too seriously and listening to music’s a go-to. I love that music can give you a song for any mood.

Work hard, play hard
Ciara London [Bodybyciara.com]. She’s created an Instagram Live workout schedule, and it got me through a lot of lockdown by making me feel really good about myself. She’s very inspirational – and her arse is amazing. How do you relax? I really enjoy going out to dinner on my own. I don’t do it very often, but I love sitting in a window eating some lovely food, not talking to anybody and just enjoying the taste of my food. I suppose it’s mindful eating. I enjoy taking time to sit with myself. Any healthy eating habits? I don’t eat too much shit food, but I get drunk if I’ve been working really hard
for weeks. I’ll get “white girl wasted” and have the f**king night of my life, then spend the next day hanging! What’s the most beneficial thing for your wellbeing? Firstly, I got a puppy [ a Frenchie Pomeranian mix named Pig], which helped everything. My little dog is ten months old and she brings the most amount of joy. Even though it’s been really hard, I’d highly recommend anyone who has bad mental health to get a pet. And I love having childlike fun – doing something silly outdoors, like crazy golf. Also, I go to therapy every week and I do EMDR [eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing] to keep on top of things. n

’m not saying TV über-producer and showrunner Ryan Murphy has taken on too much work, but in the last couple of years alone he’s created, produced, directed and/or written Pose, 9-1-1, The Politician, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Hollywood, Ratched and Halston. Plus, there’s the forthcoming tenth series of American Horror Story, a mini-series about Jeffrey Dahmer and a TV version of A Chorus Line, as well as four films, including directing the all-star musical The Prom. And he’s currently developing American Sports Story and American Love Stor y, too. In the middle of this vast morass of content comes American Horror Stories, an anthology spin-off from AHS, featuring many of that show’s cast in different separate weekly stories, kicking off with a two-parter co-written by Murphy himself,

clunkily titled “Rubber (wo)Man”. It’s set in the Murder House featured in season one of AHS, where teen Scarlett (Sierra McCormick) and her two dads Michael (Matt Bomer) and Troy (Gavin Creel) now live. Scarlett is drawn to a black rubber body suit, which seems to be haunted and brings out her inner S&M desires. When she shares these with her crush Maya (played by Paris Jackson, daughter of Michael), all hell breaks loose with ultra-violent blood-letting aplenty. But none of it is remotely believable, and worse, it’s not even vaguely scary, apart from Paris Jackson’s acting, which is terrifyingly poor. It’s useful to remember that the early seasons of AHS were genuinely chilling, and some of Murphy’s other shows, Pose in particular, are frequently excellent. But some work clearly needs to be done on quality control…

ow’s this for a killer premise: what would happen if every man in the world suddenly dropped dead, except for one – and his pet monkey? To be specific, a mysterious global cataclysmic event causes every mammal (plus bird, reptile, fish and human being) with a Y chromosome to die suddenly and rather horribly. Planes fall out of the sky, multiple car pile-ups occur, and society as we know it is on the brink of collapse. That’s the basis for this epic new drama, adapted from a graphic novel series of the same name, which focuses on how the new US President (Diane Lane) deals with this apocalyptic occurrence, and the fact that the last surviving dude on Earth (Ben Schnetzer) happens to be her son...

The series begins with a stunning depiction of a crumbling, devastated New York City after seemingly all the men have died, before flashing back to the previous day when everyone is blissfully unaware of what is about to happen. By focusing on the woman who ends up as President, and her family, political friends and enemies, the show sometimes feels a bit like an apocalyptic version of The West Wing, which can only be a good thing. And when it turns out the daughter of the now-deceased www.heatworld.com
previous male President is an anti-feminist campaigner who’s not happy with the way the new leader is handling things, the political intrigue becomes absolutely fascinating.
GENDER FLIP
It’s clearly no accident that the series, created by playwright and actress Eliza Clark, is run by a team of female writers and directors, who smartly address head-on what the premise of every person with a Y chromosome suddenly dying would mean for transgender people. There’s a transman character, Sam, played by Elliot Fletcher, who survives the global “dieoff”, and Fletcher himself says of the series, “It flips the traditional idea of gender completely on its head.” As for the question of why Yorick, the new President’s son, is somehow not dead, it makes for a brilliant central mystery in a TV series, which is one of the most ambitious of the year. hoop, whoop! Strictly is back, baby – and, as is tradition, tonight the celebs get paired with their pro partners and we see the lay of the ballroom floor in terms of who will we think will win, who will light up our Saturday nights, who we’re not fussed about, and who will set tongues wagging. As well as watching the new couples dance for the first time – always fun and slightly awks – we’ll get to see two amazing routines by the professionals, including the four new dancers. Reigning champion Bill Bailey returns, Anne-Marie will perform, and in a moment he’s been waiting for his entire Strictly career, Anton Du Beke will take up his seat alongside returning judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse. If you want a sense of the big-ness and scope of this new sci-fi series, bear in mind it’s adapted from novels by Isaac Asimov, which cover a thousand years in the history of a galactic Empire. Jared Harris, of Chernobyl fame, plays Hari Seldon, a rebellious mathematician who predicts the fall of the Empire, while Lee Pace is one of the ruling Emperor clones who feel understandably threatened by the idea that his civilisation might soon be in ruins. Much more than that we cannot say, since Apple forbids any reviews until the day episode one arrives, but we can emphasise that this is a huge undertaking. HHHH Boyd Hilton

ITV, Monday 20 September to Thursday 23 September, 9pm
Back in 2019, Martin Clunes starred in the truecrime drama Manhunt, based on the diaries of Met Police Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton, who he played onscreen. Now, Clunes again returns as Sutton in this new four-parter, which airs across most of the week. It’s another real-life story of how the detective and his colleagues pursued a notorious burglar and rapist, who spread fear throughout southeast London’s elderly population between 1992 and 2009. Sutton leads a dedicated unit named Operation Minstead, which has been established to hunt down the man who becomes known as The Night Stalker. HHHH Jason Arnopp

t’s extraordinary that it’s taken this long to revive the classic pop music-themed comedy panel show that last aired seven years ago in 2014, but thankfully Sky Max has rebooted it in fine style. The new host is Greg Davies, which means he will now have three shows on per week with his BBC1 comedy The Cleaner and the new run of Taskmaster, while the teams will be headed up by Buzzcocks veteran Noel Fielding, and – best of all – the brilliant Daisy May Cooper off This Country, with Jamali Maddix as a regular guest. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Starring: Max Harwood, Sarah Lancashire, Sharon Horgan, Lauren Patel Director: Jonathan Butterell
THE PLOT Sheffield gay teen Jamie (Harwood) wants to be a drag queen. Can loving mum (Lancashire), best friend Pritti (Patel), and new dragqueen mentor (Richard E Grant) help him on his journey – and will he wear a dress to the school prom? WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? The hit stage musical inspired by the experiences of a real teen makes a confident leap to the screen – and powerful new song This Was Me, looking back at the past struggles of gay men, adds extra emotional heft. WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? Just like TV’s It’s A Sin, the notable female person of colour is shortchanged by a story that is focused elsewhere. VERDICT Initially intended for cinema release, this infectiously enjoyable LGBTQ-positive musical should instead score on streaming. HHHH Charles Gant

SAGITTARIUS 22 Nov- 21 Dec
Never mind glass half full – this week, yours is overflowing with bubbly, so to speak. A full 7th house of love hints that you may feel high on someone’s devotion, and a friendship may deepen as the bonds you’ve been building grow stronger. Work-wise, your intuitive reaction to doubt is bang-on. LUCKY SPECS: Rose-tinted
Check that urge to make promises you can’t keep, especially in love. There’s no need for grand gestures, but if in doubt, ask – you deserve reassurance. Money-wise, you can outwit Mercury’s looming retrograde by being cash-conscious. LUCKY POLICY: Honesty
Lovers beware this week – Mercury’s looming retrograde is a test. But stay on red alert for flash points and you’ll be fine. Good relationships survive and thrive. Meanwhile, your money planet Saturn has decent aspects, which suggest a minor pay delay at worst. LUCKY NEED: Patience
TAURUS 20 Apr-20 May

CAPRICORN 22 Dec-19 Jan
One thing’s for certain, you don’t need an excess of cash to have fun this week. That super-strong 5th house suggests lots of laughs and a lovely laid-back vibe – so much so, in fact, that even money planet Mercury’s looming retrograde can’t touch your vibrant mood. Enjoy every spirited moment. LUCKY ENERGY: Irrepressible
While too many retrograde planets faze others, you glide on by. Diligence is needed, and you have lots, but do stay cautious workwise. Meanwhile, a strong 10th house suggests debts paid and red-hot investment instincts. Insane attention to detail
One of your Capricorn superpowers is realism. So, why be distracted by someone’s flakiness? Their problems aren’t yours and your attention is unlikely to help, so step away. Elsewhere, money planet Uranus retrograde suggests an easily solved issue. LUCKY TAKE: Firm but fair
GEMINI 21 May-20 Jun
LIBRA 23 Sep-22 Oct
AQUARIUS 20 Jan-18 Feb
You are wonderfully free-thinking the majority of the time, but even you may be surprised by this week’s eye-opener. Someone you thought you knew may have hidden depths. Money-wise, a magic Moon transit suggests an unexpected bonus. LUCKY SONG: Here Comes The Shock by Green Day
Longing for a makeover? Blame a strong Venus transit telling you that the way forward includes an image rethink. Your talent speaks for itself, but a fresh look may boost confidence. Elsewhere, a friend needs a gentle pep talk. Great hair, don’t care
There’s no room for short cuts this work week. Half the planets in retrograde means mistakes creep in, so double checking details is key. You’re meticulous, but only human after all. Meanwhile, a random act of kindness makes your day. LUCKY SONG: Here For You by Kygo
CANCER 21 Jun-22 Jul
SCORPIO 23 Oct-21 Nov
PISCES 19 Feb-19 Mar
Your instinct to comfort and soothe is strong, and Mars in your 4th house intensifies your desire to make a loving home. Whoever shares it with you is lucky. Work-wise, a previously prickly person may turn out to be on your side, so don’t dismiss them too hastily. LUCKY FLOWER: Orange blossom
There’s little wriggle room with so many retrograde planets. Double check work and financial details, then check again to be safe. Love is untouched, though – relationships may deepen and singles easily attract admirers. LUCKY AURA: Deep green
You know words can hurt, so you choose yours carefully. It’s a pity others don’t, but a tetchy work tone (pesky retrogrades again) shouldn’t upset you. It’s short-lived, so keep smiling. Elsewhere, someone attracted to you has a backstory. LUCKY SONG: Hands by Jewel
