Report The project starts from the historical analysis of the square and park, recognizing in it the essence of the character of the places. After the construction of the monument, the park area also has been opened and the previously private space from a closed place surrounded by artillery barracks became accessible to the city. The aim of the project is to emphasize this physical centrality of the park and square and the conceptual centrality of the statue and the meaning that resides in it. The echo of history resonates in the concept of ours. Our aim is to celebrate the history of the square and the park by drawing their future. The charachterized urban structure is read like the forms of continuity which consist of an an intervention intended to give unitary form to the territory and places. A compositional episode in which architecture and landscape participate in the definition of a harmonious and organic intervention identified by a structured, orderly and organized form. In this sense, the project do not shut down the possibilities but continually offers new ones. This is not about operating the recognition of a self-referential reality,

VIDPO143 but verifying the existance of requiried conditions for the construction of a project that attributes reality and efficacy to specific elements of the natural or man-made environment, intended precisely as “resources or as an opportunity for the individual and collective activity. The result is a new unitary and cohesive urban image that draws its inspiration from the forms that have crossed these places, from the echo of history that resounds in the present by conforming a place that celebrates democracy and collaboration, people owns it and therefore will be managed and morphed. The transformation of space, its functional integration between Taksim Square and Gezi Park, the possibility of creating the conditions for the growth of democratic and social relationships, the creation of such a contemporary space where different cultural realities could live together and all become priority goals in order to outline a vibrant context capable to contribute to urban renovation of the neighborhood in which it stands and finally to hand back a newfound social pole to the city. By Researching both the historical and recent layer structure, and the reasons for an effective intervention to regenerate this urban texture, we have identified some primary objectives which have determined the design choices of the intervention.

ANALYSIS

All this is a material and human heritage that should be relaunched as one of the places of the heart, precious for inhabitants and tourists, for those who come here every day at dawn or for those who may have come by once in their life just by chance. Taking up such an important urban challenge means getting in touch with the richness of a territory, made of sensations, experiences and traditions that few other places are provided to offer, an immense social and emotional capital. Speaking of the future, the quality of life of the people and citizens, today and tomorrow, we must be aware of the answer, it cannot be organized exclusively in an architectural manner. First of all, it must be resulted from an idea of development of the society, should be the result of a cultural vision, capable of constantly measuring people’s expectations, requirements, needs, attention and even desires. The route should be inscribed within this horizon, a route capable to assume cultural and social values and significance, aiming to mend the broken threads of human relations, to offer an innovative mode of value and employment creation, capable to link expertise, traditional

knowledge and model technologies together. The creativity and skill of the artisans and vendors, nourished by solid cultures layered over the centuries, have been able to produce an extraordinary heritage, which has its fulcrum just in the large and also small cities and urban centers. A heritage that not only must be safeguarded, but must be innovated and put at the service of this new idea of development, which makes culture an essential and powerful lever for whether social or economic change and transformation. Inside the newly designed spaces, a series of activities and experiences related to culture may take place, so each element will guide the visitor in the discovery of a place that celebrates the past and present of his or her people in a continuous evolution made of events but also of flavors and smells of the Istanbul tradition. Some spaces will be dedicated to experimentation and innovation, specially designed to put the visitor at the center of a multisensory experience made of new discoveries and innovation. 1

As an element of connection between the nodes of the territorial system, the vegetation joins to the daily life of the city as a physical element, occurring the image of an urban area that is born, develops itself and emerges from the greenery. Its built parts are inserted in a context of green spaces with different configurations: garden, forest, botanical garden, camping area and vertical gardens. The vegetation that we find in the structure dedicated to the vertical garden becomes an element that attributes an extraordinary quality to this area, through the continuity between architecture and landscape, the scenographic view of the latter exceeds, and transform it into an active element in the architectural compositional process. Everything in the Taksim square and park project tends towards accessibility, the co-production of culture, the self-promotion of the community and the redistribution of resources.

DIALOGUE AND ECHO

Making the urban space usable thanks to the enhancement of the nodal points of the architectural project is the basis of the lighting concept. We want to represent the space thanks to the enhancement of greenery and architecture, in a meticulous design, trying to limit the diffused lighting of the road poles as much as possible. For this reason, the lighting design involves 4 different lighting projects, depending on the areas that form the architectural project. A lighting study where the pedestrian and the natural element are the nodal components of the project. Where the pedestrian can walk inside a welcoming urban space, where the architecture stands out as a landmark precisely to accompany her or him on a bright path that reveals them and where visual comfort is guaranteed.

ANALYSIS AND CONSIDERATIONS A careful analysis of the current status of the trees has been carried out in order to intervene in a way to keep all those in good condition, to move some of them for the new configuration of the park and to eliminate only those in bad condition. In addition, new trees will be planted to enrich portions of the park with shade. Also around the monument of the green square, in the form of pergolas, it creates a welcoming space in the shade by bringing the pedestrian closer to the monument of the republic and taking shape from its circular configuration. The small buildings that populate the park are built entirely with light prefabricated structures, such as x-lam, are realized through dry construction methods and entirely recyclable. Energy self-sufficiency and management economy are guaranteed by the use of passive solutions such as solar panels for the production of hot water, low thermal transmittent walls and green roofs. Large covered terraces offer 360 ° views of the park and the city providing new perspectives and atmospheres. These buildings of different heights host services for the park and cultural functions such as seedbeds, plant nurseries, greenhouses, artistic spaces, the park museum, library, restaurants and shops, an infopoint, coffee shops and restrooms. A separate discussion is that of the Lama, a vertical forest made up of vegetable gardens at different levels, a real landmark of the square. Everything is connected by the circular ramp that allows you to travel the park in a new form. Fully accessible from the 4 sides of the park, it goes from height 0 to 10m. Crossing this you can directly access the panoramic terraces, the park museum. To make the square completely pedestrian we moved the bus parking area from the top of the staircase south of Gezi Park towards Tak-Äą Zafer Cd. So that pedestrian flows are not interrupted by driveways. People who exit the subway on taksim square can take advantage of a protected subway station full of services. Each part of the park is accessible through ramps that resolve the differences in height already present therein as well as the access ramps to the Ring allow anyone to follow it. Even inside the buildings and the Blade, the access, internal paths and environments are accessible to everyone. The square and the park will be available 24 hours a day thanks to the study of lighting with not only a scenographic and architectural function but above all as a source of well-being and safety. The light sources have been synthesized based on the perception that one has of them as punctual, linear and volumetric. The punctual light sources are those which illuminate the trunk and the external part of the trees from the ground upwards and those which, precisely between the external part of the trees, generate lights and shadows similar to those produced by the sun’s rays. Linear light is that which illuminates the upper and lower surface of the Ring. The upper one with two beams of light positioned on the walking surface intersects with the handrails and the lower one generated by LEDs that illuminate a perforated sheet illuminate the square below generating the sensation of walking under the stars. Linear light is also the one that emphasizes the structure that houses the vertical gardens. Beams of light follow the braces that launches itself towards the sky. Our group is made up of territorial and architectural design experts and expert consultants of the architectural and social history of the city of Istanbul and of specialized disciplines of architecture.

LIGHTING, SAFETY AND SECURITY

PUNCTURAL LIGHT

LINEAR LIGHT

1 - For the walking paths and for the green scenography we plan on using a color temperature of hot light (2700/3000”K) with the goal to better the visual comfort and make the pedestrian space more welcoming. For the walking paths and the lighting of the green areas, we are planning on using a warm light color (2700/3000°K), so to have a better visual comfort and a more welcoming pedestrian space. 2 - For the illumination of the buildings, we will use diffuse lighting. They will result in a sort of landmarks that will transform the terraced spaces into bright lanterns as to indicate a visual paths. We will use a cold temperature light of 4000°K, so they are more visible and can be distinguished from the warm night atmosphere created. High lighting-performance fixtures will be placed inside the buildings

3 – the aerial walkway will be the distinctive element of the project. A suspended path underlined by the presence of lighting fixtures in the lower part of the structure designed to illuminate the path below, but also to emphasize the suspension of the structural / architectural element. We will intervene here as well, with a cold color temperature.

VOLUME LIGHT

4- A separate chapter is dedicated to the lighting of the reticular architectures in the area (the tall vegetable tower and the constructions with vegetable roofs intended for temporary spaces). Here, we will install narrow-beam lighting fixtures, precisely to delimit the structures with light. Cold color temperature is used also in this case.
