Taksim Belongs to Everyone! Cultivating a Space for Pluralism Istanbul Diversity is at the core of Instanbul's identity. Connecting Europe and Asia, Istanbul has always been one of the most diverse cities in the world; a global hub gathering people, and goods from all over the world. Taksim Diversity is also at the core of Taksim's identity. As the modern, post-Ottoman, centre of Istanbul, Taksim is surrounded by monuments representing diverse beliefs, cultures, and ideas. Once a Greek-Armenian neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city, it was also a symbolic space of Kemalism and Modernism, a tourist destination, and a centre for Istanbul's alternative subculutres. Methodology for Cultivating a Space for Pluralism Diversity is the identity of Taksim, and Istanbul. Pluralism is the explicit valuing of diversity as such. A pluralist space encourages everyone to maintain their independent cultural traditions,

while at the same time including them in the overall collective. In order to cultivate a pluralist space, it should achieve the following four aims: Step 1 Already existing differences and identities need to be recognized, and the integrity of these identities should be preserved and enhanced. Step 2 The Commons, a shared space where differences can be negotiated, must be clearly defined and delieanated. The Commons are a basic infrastructure for human life. They need to be accessible, and safe for everyone.

Taksim Belongs To All Its Users

Taksim Gezi Park isin the southest green patch of the Bosphorus Green System, a system of parks that is traditionally called “koru. The korus has situated along with Bosphorus and serves for local and immigrant fauna as well as flora.

As the Gezi Park was a cemetery in past, and redeveloped as a urban park. It is still one of the most crucial green spaces within the dense urban development of Istanbul for its citizens and visitors. Its historic role of water distribution benefiting from its situation on the top of ridge-line highlights its critical role as a urban infrastructure and provision as well as opportunities to foster the ecological flows penetrating city and towards the Marmara Sea in South.

Historic Istanbul has been surrounded by cemeteries and gardens providing fresh food for the city. Today, only a few of the gardens have been remained.

Taksim Belongs To Diverse History

Taksim Gezi Park will be used by diverse human and non-human users, each with their unique needs and requirements. A pluralist space

should be welcoming to all of them. In order to do so, the users’ diverse needs must be recognized.

Historical interventions have compromised the urban integrity of Taksim, as well as the formal clarity of Gezi Park and Gezi Gardens. The order and symmetry of Prost's original design has been lost. By restoring missing blocks of Talimhane, and creating a linear park in place of old Taksim Boulevard, integrity of the site is improved. Planting over select pathways within Gezi Park and Gezi Gardens expands green space and clarifies path hierarchy.

M

The Commons comprise a hierarchy of shared spaces, centred on transporation nodes.

The area around Taksim square currently suffers from many poorly defined open spaces, which lack identity or the amenities needed for full inhabitation. It is also poorly connected to the surrounding city, with Taksim square being stranded between busy streets, and Gezi Park isolated to the west by a large expanse of empty pavement and a large grade change. By defining transportation nodes, as distinct “gates, expanding the network of pedestrian paths, and creating landscaped edges, a clear hiearachy of circulation space is created.

The Commons are a shared infrastrucutre for all people using Taksim Gezi Park. The Commons provide accessibility by adding gentle ramps, safety by adding pole-lighting throught the site, and drinkalbe water fountains at the gates.

The commons are a safe and accessible armature for the site, which both connect it internally through a network of paths, and connect it to its surroundings through “gates. The aims of the commons are threefold:

the perimeters, and concrete pavers in the middle, providing durability and access to utilities below.

The ecological infrastructure is layered on top grass

Water is a key resource within the commons, drawing on the heritage of the site as a reservoir and access point to water. We propose the creation of two large water reservoirs below Taksim square; one to store clean municipal water for public access, droughts and emergencies, and another to harvest and filter rainwater for irrigation and other site amenities. The gates would all be home to unique water features, providing access to clean water for all.

Improving the Health of Local Plants 27% of trees on site are in poor health or exposed to environmental threats including ceratocystis platani and pine processionary moth. The combination of grassland edges and forested core supports species that fight pests and protect native plants. Such species include Calosoma sycophanta.

The goal of the project is to encourage the greatest possible number and range of events on site. Temporary Events can range from informal social gatherings, such as an Iftar meal, to Seasonal Events, such as Sumac harvesting, to formal events that would require a permit, such as outdoor theatre performances. Through these events diverse social groups can feel included in Taksim.

The proposal assumes that the design and functional programme of specific places on the site should be further developed through open calls for proposal, or design competitions. These competitions can involve much broader specturm of the public in the design of Taksim, giving them a role in the process. New culturally significant artefacts can be created, including groups which are currently exclude from Taksim. Sites suitable for future design competitions are defined in order to make this outcome more likely.

The proposal seeks to ensure that the social and cultural diversity of Taksim continues to increase as the time goes on. In order to promote pluralistic future development of Taksim, specific areas of the sites have been designated as Design Committee Zones, Potential Competition Sites, and Temporary Event Spaces. Design Committees, Competitions, and Temporary Events all facilitate involvement of a broader community in planning, designing and

The purpose of each Committee is to provide the designers with site specific expertise, and knowledge of site specific requirements, such that the artistic and functional integrity of culturally significant structures is preserved as much as possible, or altered only through an inclusive collaborative process. By helping preserve the integrity of each culturally significant urban artifact, the Design Committees will help preserve the diversity of Taksim. Design Committees should provide a voice to agents who may otherwise from the city building process.

gates, located at all major entry points to the site are paved with terrazzo modules, in a recognizable color which signalizes arrival to Taksim. These provide access from neighbouring streets, public transit and vehicular dropoff. Gates are also ideal places for local food markets and flower markets. Gateways are also home to basic necessities, including access to water, washrooms and small-scale retail. The gateways are paved with hard-wearing terrazzo tiles.

The commons are based on the double-bottom line philosophy that urban spaces can be beneficial to both humans and animals (biodiversity). All buildings within the gates are equipped with pollinator rooftop gardens, providing safe and secluded feeding and breeding ground for local species, in the required patchwork pattern that allows species to move through the site. Pathways throughout the site are lined with iconic local trees, providing comfortable shaded spaces for people, and connective networks that facilitate movement of local birds and pollinator species.

Early in the 20th century, Gezi was proposed as a gateway to the natural spaces beyond the city. While this vision never came to be, it can still become a gateway to nature within the city, welcoming the lush ancestral forests of Istanbul within a dynamic and flexible grasslands edge. The introduction of an urban forest ecosystem within the existing fabric of Gezi park, creates a space for urban respite and biodiversity in the heart of the city. Throughout the park, rows of tall urban tree planting create migration corridors for people and pollinator species alike.
