EVOLUTION OF TAKSIM What makes Taksim Square so important and gives prominence to the square is the historical layers it contains. These generate the collective memory with the history of country. The fate of this square and its surroundings remembered with the unpleasent historical events that are imposed on it, designed accordingly and in a need to get rid of this perception is our first determination and starting point. It means that Taksim Square has to leave political agendas and its history behind urgently. The current situation of Taksim Square consists of ongoing constructions and their warning signs, people sitting around the flowerpots that are placed randomly and the continuity of emptiness and feeling of freedom that the square creates. This feeling of freedom created by the emptiness is actually the most important feature that the squares should have. In time stories that people have and experience turn this emptiness into a ‘ place ‘ To become grounds for stories that people bring to Taksim, to make here ‘Taksim for anyone‘ despite all other different opinions, in order to create a place for the emptiness, in other words the stories people will experience and bring, as arcitects we’ve tried to create a social base instead of making critical interferences and designing for society. more modern main purpose ‘Happy City.‘ In the name of transportation to the Taksim Square we have dealt with Karaköy-Tunnel Line, operation of tram which is not used but for a touristic purpose and of course the green spaces as we mentioned above. We’ve discussed why telpher option in Macka Park, mostly thought as a romantic trip, hasn’t been considered as a transportation. We have noticed that traffic jam in some particular regions are attempted to be solved with a quick but inefficient solutions because in short distances due to the topographic reasons, citizens use public transport or even worse their own vehicles. Thus, in order to arise a new trafic culture in Istanbul, we’ve analyzed Beyoglu-SisliBesiktas transportation network, took radical decisions about transportation regarding circulating on roads, lane usage in the streets, speed regulations, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops and etc. From the point we’ve reached, it can be clearly seen that Karakoy and Harbiye are connected not only from underground but also aboveground in a nostalgic and cultural way, historical Kurtulus Square is linked up with Besiktas Square more efficiently via the new Gezi Park and old Macka telper line. With the help of addition of these two new lines, the present Yenikapı-Haciosman and Taksim-Kabatas funicular railway and a new public transport model which is entegrated to the Mahmutbey-Zeytinburnu railway via Taksim will develop. As a result, the traffic problem experienced by every citizen of Istanbul will reduce with the help of our solutions; liveliness and mobility will come to Taksim Square and its surroundings that had almost come to a standstill. Offering people a better and more free Taksim will let us reach to our aim ‘Istanbul as a happy city!‘ We believe that this project will be a good example for Istanbul square arrangement projects.

designed an open-minded and open-ended framework program. When we handle in the current problems of Taksim, the first thing to be done is to regulate the density of people and vehicles in order to increase the quality of urban life. It is to offer real public spaces except for shopping malls, what we want to say is to provide uninterrupted open green areas, except for closed spaces that we can not take place for any purposes other than shopping. The aim is to turn these green areas into the 7/24 open facilities with a variety of cultural and sport activities according to seasonal conditions For example; to eliminate interruptions such as at somewhere wire fences, at somewhere else parking lots etc. between Gezi Park and Harbiye, even to go to Nisantasi from the seashore direction and thus to close Kadırgalar Street that divides the Macka Park into the middle, despite the fact that there is another alternative way to Macka, into traffic by Gazhane! With the help of enhancing the overpasses in the park in order to gather all green small parcels deserted or covered by walls in the whole area, we can gain back the spirit that was created by Henri Prost. Even though it couldn’t be prevented Istanbul from widening towards the North, we can at least gain back and develop Gezi Park. The most important obstacle to be overcome in order to make Taksim transportation hub more convenient is the non-integrated process in transportation issue. For instance, transportation network doesn’t meet the requirements of people living in Istanbul, in spite of underground transportation, roads are still full of traffic not just only in working hours but in out of working hours as well, and as a result we can clearly say that Istanbul deserves its fame as a ‘chaos city‘. Reducing that chos will be the key to increase the interest to Taksim and reach the healtier and
The Taksim Square in Istanbul has a considerable potential for development due to its location at the highest place in Beyoglu, centrality in the end of the vivid Istiklal Street, direct connection to the Gezi Park, proximity to cultural and religious institutions like the AKM, Maksem Gallery and mosque as well as due its importance as a central junction of the city. The historical meaning of this place as a point of intersection in the network of water distrubution as well as the former Taksim barracks is considered in course of the planning. After an intensive analysis of this place, the aim of the planning consists in the emphasis of the Taksim Square as the unique centre of the city. Three new buildings are planned in the north-west area of the Taksim Square, which compound the entire area with the aim of defining the border and supporting the perception of an integrated structure. The single-storey roofing in the altitude of Maksem serves as a waiting area for the citizens. The three-storey buildung in the centre functions as a museum for urban development. The three-storey building bordering on Cumhuriyet Street serves as an information and security point for the indigenous population and tourists. In order to define the Taksim Square as the unique centre, a clear border in terms of an alley with trees is marked in the southern part. The travel speed of the bordering streets in the southern part is reduced. Moreover, the expansion of the new floor covering reaching until the traffic lane in the western part makes the people feel driving above a place instead of a street. In course of the planning, our team has resigned intentionally the optional implementation of two lower crossings from the current masterplan. Instead of that, the public highway is cutted from the AKM and transformed into a traffic-free zone. This is one of the new measures related to the traffic. In

balanced by a well system with lateral stairs as well as ramps and planned as a forecourt of the AKM. The integration of the well system is based on the idea, that the facade of the AKM needs a
reflecting surface in order unfold its visual impact. The well system is deliberately not planned in the full width of the AKM building, so the connection between the forecourt and Taksim Square exists to the greatest possible extent. This forecourt is similarly designed to the red flooring covering around the Statue of the Republic and integrated in the aspect of design beyond the historical context. The useful and high-quality floor covering at the Taksim Square is retained in order to avoid waste of material. Through the unique material of the floor covering, the border of this area is redefined. The clear zoning and the constructural enclosure serves the Monument of the Republic to rise as the focal point and intensifies its function as a anchor point. The Gezi park bordering on the north part is completely restructured with respectful consideration of the existing topography. The distinctive staircase between the Taksim Square and the Gezi park is expanded until the park in order develop its potential. Consequently, the stairs serves as a link between the urban place the and inner-city green space. The transition from the place to the park is also a historical intersection. The wall located in the northern part of this place is planned as a relief wall, so the history of origins from the Ottoman Empire until the Republic can be perceived as an outdoor museum. In the Gezi park the splitted green spaces are extensively consolidated, so the park is reconstructed into a holistic green space. Consequently, the green area for pedestrians is expanded. The existing trees are retained and only relocated to a place in the close distance, if necessary. The park is principally divided into three zones. The middle and deepest area is reconstructed as a continous green space. In the northern part of the central line, a markable well system with a stair system is located. The eastern part of the Gezi park is characterized through the diversity of trees and activity areas. The former bordering traffic axis is transformed into a promeande and gastronomy area by the expansion of the green space as well as the public usage of the ground floors. Furthermore, the separately located AtatĂźrk
is integrated into the Gezi Park by diverse measures. The western part of Gezi Park is dominated by single-storey buildings in the area of gastromony, which are interposed in the topography. The double-sided development in the cafe enables the entry into the park. The pedestrian axis is transformed into a high-quality promeande and gastronomy area. The public usage of the ground floors located on the opposite side is supported. The view to the monument exists and the tram with the extended route can be observed and heard. In the northwest part of the park, the existing structures are connected through a tree canopy. The new integrated gastronomy increases the quality of the stay at this place. The park is mainly dominated through the new pedestrian bridge, in which you find an e-bike station. This encourages the people to take a walk or to ride a bicycle. In course of the reconstruction of open space planning, which is based on the masterplan of Henri Prost, the new bridge with the green space is planned as a central junction. The separate green areas are connected via bridges and through the disappearance of traffic area. Furthermore, the green areas are expanded until the sea. The plan is focusing on expanding the green areas by several measures with the aim of revitalizing the local recreational area and keeping enough space to breathe. Furthermore, a superior transport network is developed by the expansion of the tram as well as cable-way and bicycle routes in order to ensure the accessibility of this metropolitan area. So the existing route starting from KarakĂśy until the End of the Istiklal Street (Taksim square) is planned to be connected with the Congress Centre (Nisantasi). The existing cable-way route between Macapark and Besiktas is planned to be extended. A cableway route starting from Kurtulus, that passes Gezi Park and Mackapark, is planned to be extended to Mackapark. So, the three hills are connected with each other and create a new route until the sea. Throughout the whole planning, health and dimensions of human beings stay in the focus. The human beings who has been pushed out of the life of the square in the course of time should be brought to the center again.
