TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

PROJECT REPORT
For many years Taksim Square, which is one of the most important open areas of Istanbul, has undergone constant change in order to fulfil the needs of its city as a public area. Over time the landscape, areas and surfaces of the square have changed shape and the final form consists of non-functional large hard floor surfaces. The square is one of the most important civilian areas of the city and has hosted various events from sports celebrations to political rallies for the over decadas. The present plaza lacks the usage to support urban life. However, while maintaining itself as an urban green area of the region with its trees and grass areas Gezi Park has turned into a multi-part and unpractical condition. In recent years, it has become important to renew the square for large-scale events, daily use needs and also to meet the demends of the city. Taksim Square project is an innovative urban design project that gives a new life to a unique piece of Beyoğlu history. The proposed design starts from the references around the Taksim Square and strengthens them: the hexagonal form in the Atatürk Library, hexagon dome Taksim Mosque and hexagon in Marmara Hotel. An important strategy of the plan was to solve all functions in a hexagonal grid and integrate the scattered architecture around the city with the square. In the main ides, surrounding an open, sunny central area an edge consisting of large, shaded hexagonal tree structures was proposed. These canopies also refer to the idea of the fringe in Traditional Turkish Architecture. Shadow elements that continue along the two sides of the Gezi Park, while drawing the boundary of the square, turn into iconic, high-plastic elements that belongs to the area. The main square will host events of up to thousands of people in a wide variety of potential configurations.

PROJECT REPORT
The regeneration strategy is a plan that forms an iconic and pedestrian-friendly urban core and a series of cultural and public areas. This approach uses public space as a powerful tool to combine the needs of a modern city with its people and history. By adopting the evolution of the city, the plan provides a more inclusive and accessible urban core for future generations. The surroundings of the square are insulated with green and shadow elements, leaving hard ground to host other community events such as sport events, concerts, political meetings, local market, mass meals, sibling city, street theater. In the proposal design, the square and park have an atmosphere that can breathe which is democratic, establish social relations and invite the user to interact with each other. The trees of Gezi Park, which continues right next to the square, are the defining feature of the park. The slightly inclined topography, which rises slightly above the street level, meets the recreation needs of the inhabitants. The wide, versatile pedestrian roads designed create informal meetings as well as performance spaces and new meeting areas for young visitors. However, rather than the existing gridal multipart structure, a destination was realized. The park is intended to be an open area that is used 24 hours a day, multiple entrances to the park are given from different points. The park, which is given an entrance gate from the square, with large grass areas will bring together, different age groups, families, students and employees and will provide a wide range of possible activities and gathering areas. In the new design, Cumhuriyet Avenue connection has been transformed into a public culture-art street where pavilions were add where multi-purpose meetings, art events and exhibitions can be held.
