Mandacaru (or mand4kru, in this case) is a cactus typical of a certain desert area. Since it lives in a hostile environment, it has many utilities, from feeding the animal stocks in times of little to no rain, to cleaning the water from regions without a basic water system. It´s flower blossoms only once a year and for one night. Cultural belief that if the mandacaru blossoms the raining season will be good, full of water and life. Since the project is made in a country that struggles with a harsh climate and is constantly changing through time and cultural influences, we thought that a plant that survives without water would be a symbol of hope, perseverance and of the time passing.

INTRODUCTION Taksim Square is one of the many places that is surrounded by memory and life in the city of Istanbul. Its history, over the last centuries, was built based on the manifestations, celebrations, rites, and from sharing the public space that embraces the whole site. This project could not fail to take into account the many historical processes that the area has passed through. Some of the goals highlighted on the project purpose are:

Provide the permeability of the vision, to guarantee the preservation of the landscape without any elements that could be harmful to the pedestrian’s vision;

Manage to preserve the meaning and affective bond of the square for the population without drastically modifying the landscape that that composes it;

Promote a landscape project that does not harm the context in which the project is being implemented, respecting the landscape and history of Gezi Park and using native trees to occupy new spaces in the square;

Guarantee a new center of entertainment, culture, and tourism for the population of one of the largest urban centers/tourist destination of the country;

Create new spaces for permanence and also meeting spots in the square, encouraging a better occupation of its area as a whole;

Promote the installation of urban devices that collaborates to attract the local commerce and artists to appropriate the space in the square, just as stores, stages, etc.;

Develop in partnership with the responsible architects for the new Atatürk Cultural Center remodeling process, a connection between Taksim Square and the Atatürk Library area, creating a small public square at the back of the new cultural center;

Review furniture and standardization of lighting systems, boundary metal posts, and places of permanence over the whole square;

Aggregate the historical value and relevance of the square to the history of the city of Istanbul, as well as to Turkey itself;

Guarantee a sensorial exploration of the square through its aquatic, vegetal, and built elements. The lamp posts and floor lights would also create a whole new space and environment during the night for the people that will use the square for recreation.

Provide for the use of facilities in the square to promote greater cultural debate and encourage the occupation of public space by the population;

The concept of the whole project is of a small intervention, reaffirming the existing physical and cultural characteristics of the place. Our proposal adds new signature street furniture for the Taskim Square that resembles the existing ones. We have designed a more industrial and modular urban furniture, with a more humane and natural feeling.

We have distributed benches throughout the square. We intend to maintain the existing ones, made of dark granite stone, and also add new ones in the same monolithic fashion, but in concrete instead. This allows for rationalized fabrication and budgeting. The concrete will have the texture of the casting wood planks, which gives it a warm aspect. Wood sittings are added to break the coldness of the concrete and create a dialogue with nature.

Thinking of a modular design, we integrated vases to the benches. These vases have the same material and texture of the benches and intend to make the people who sit on the benches have a closer contact with nature. Larger vases will be used for planting trees.

We have also added some pergolas, with a design based on the traditional pattern that can be found on the metalwork near to the tunnel entrance. Depending on the sunlight and weather, the pergola can make different shapes of shade throughout the day.

To limit the area of the street and the square we designed a metal pole, for its resistance and durability in case of collision. The entrances to the square we have illuminated poles, to incentivize night use of the square and also promote security of pedestrians.

Near the Turkish flag, we placed a stage, made with the same design of the benches and street furniture, but scaled up. It has a slope for accessibility. Our intention is to create a space for local artists and performers to disseminate local art and traditions. The square has spaces for different uses and tries to embrace each and every kind of use and artistic expression.

Since the tulip is the symbol of Turkey we designed a lamp pole to be installed in the square that resembles the plant. It has two parts, one to illuminate closes to the ground, and emphasis pedestrians. The other part illuminates a much more broad area, distributing the light more evenly. It has a design in the bottom that dialogues with the floor light, giving the square differents uses according the day and a playful visual at night.

As a wide street located in the Taksim square, the space nowadays used as a passage can became an area of leisure, with the increase of the trees and waterways. The principle used at this place was to turn it into a boulevard, where people can sit, enjoy the environment and the urban furniture proposed.

The water mirror designed for the square represents the connection between the country culture and the historical process of the urban space. So as not to cause any kind of technical interference with the tunnel that runs below the Boulevard area, the project foresees the removal of only 10 centimeters of soil related to the current floor level of the square.

Over the entire lenght of water mirror, there will be positioned a few types of commercial equipments for local store owners, the street furniture and wood decks for people to rest and small passages to go across the “channel”.

The Taksim Square surroundings have lots of commercial establishments, mainly at İstiklal Street, where the stores are concentrated. When it comes to Mete Street, there are some residential-commercial buildings, nevertheless, they are mainly related to financial and accommodation uses. In that way, the design proposes some changes to the Mete Street to encourage people to stay longer in this area. Besides that, the project was designed to be pedestrian-friendly, since this street was seen as a continuation of the Gezi Park.

In order to have a friendly-pedestrian space and increase safety, new crosswalks were proposed, and a sidewalk in front of the Taksim Square would be designed to bound the area of the street. The sidewalk width would also be increased at the beginning of the street, near the Atatürk Cultural Center. Benches, trees and landscape elements may be added to sidewalks to create a better environment. Two parking spaces would be turned into cycle parking and two Parklets + Commercial Equipment suggested as the drawings.

A parklet with commercial equipment is proposed to attract people and stimulate them to stay longer on the site. The idea was to create a combination of public and private space. At the end of the Mete Street, near the InterContinental Hotel, the sidewalk width would be increased, stairs placed to have direct access to the Beltur Taksim Gezi Parkı Cafeteria and a crossing placed to connect with the Atatürk Cultural Center back Square.

The intention of this square was to connect Mete Street with Kütüphane Çk Street, thereby, continuing with a fluid space for pedestrians, enhancing safety. To do so, a bleacher designed made of concrete would be placed on the square limits, with wood planks on the top of the concrete block. The Square is planned in four platforms, with 30cm height each one, with gardens designed to keep the original trees.

PLAYGROUND The concept of the playground was to create a route for children, in a way they could use their imagination to come up with plays, and stories. On the right side of the playground, were placed swings, supported by a wood-frame structure, and placed over a sandbox. Behind the swings, there are four seesaws and a labyrinth, all made of wood planks as well. The jungle gym is divide in three wooden slabs, connected by bridges. Each one of them has a different aspect. The first one has a climbing rope to have access to the slab; the second one has a vertical climbing tunnel; the third one has a castle and a slide, which leads to a second sandbox. In the front of the labyrinth there is a path of logs and a monkey bars made of metal for children to climb.

A series of urban facilities and equipment are proposed to meet the interest of street traders and shop owners on using Square’s space and infrastructure. To make this possible, it is suggested to remove the itinerant stalls located at the historical fountains of Maksem, and move them to the proposed equipment located in the Boulevard area.

The back of these equipment would be delivered all in white paint for art interventions made by local artists. This way, open-air galleries along the water mirror would be formed for people to visit. Wood decks and small area of grass are also placed among the art interventions.

There would be proposed also new equipments for containing all the metal fences that seem to be all over the square, especially at the proximities of Maksem and the Republic Monument. The smaller ones would be positioned at the back of a subway elevator. The bigger one, would be right next to the car access for the parking lot of Gezi Park.

To standardize all the proposed equipments, the design of the bus stop and the security cabin have also been reviewed.

Bicycle parking may be installed right next to the subway exit to make the access easier for cyclists.

To define this proposal’s guiding principles to preserve historic and cultural heritage that exists in Taksim’s Square and its surroundings, the ideas that were taken as guideline were defended in events promoted by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) as follows • • • •

“International Cultural Tourism Charter” - heritage significance places’ tourism management (ICOMOS, 1976); “Warsaw-Nairobi Recommendation” - Safeguarding and Contemporary Role of Historic Areas (UNESCO, 1976); “Washington Charter” - Historic Towns and Urban Areas Conservation (ICOMOS, 1986); “Paris Convention” - Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding (UNESCO, 2003).

The information totem would indicate in high relief sculpture the monument that is (or was) near to it. Each totem would be placed in one of the spots highlighted on the “Heritage Map of Taksim’s Square and its surroundings”.

The totem would also have a strip on it, according to the color of the heritage it is related to. Similar projects have been implemented in other relevant urban centers around the world. These indications can also be placed on the floor or on the walls in places that are highlighted on a region map. Heritage has been classified into four categories: •

In red, the Lost/imaginative heritage: assets that existed in a specific location before the construction of a new building, that is currently in the location that the sign would be placed. Examples: Taksim Barrack, Taksim Municipal Garden, Taksim Municipal Music Hall;

In blue, the Hydric heritage: since the district has a water supply system of great historical importance, it would be interesting to highlight the region’s water sources location and important fountains. Examples: Taksim Maksemi, fountain in front of the German Embassy, Dolmabahçe Clock Tower fountain;

In green, the Vegetative heritage: considering the importance that Gezi Park has for so many residents of Istanbul over the generations - as well as the events that took place in 2013 - its vegetation must not be left aside as a city heritage as well. Examples: olea europaea, magnolia grandiflora, lagerstroemia indica;

In yellow, the Architectonic and artistic heritage: taking into account that the architectural complex surrounding the square involves several historical layers and construction styles, it is extremely important to highlight the heritage built in Taksim square, Beyoğlu district. Examples: the Republic Monument, Atatürk Cultural Center, Maçka Democracy Park complex.

In the following map that would be placed in one of the sides of the Tourism Information Center, some of these examples have been placed according to its location and classification: The touristic information centers would have this map printed on two of its four facades. Through the classification of the historic heritage of the Taksim region, tourists and residents of Istanbul will be able to choose thematic routes or even recognize historical points that exist in the route they take.

One of the main pedestrian access routes to Taksim Square is made through İstiklâl Cd. The historic tramway route that connects Taksim to Tünel has a large concentration of commercial establishments of all kinds. Since the street is one of Istambul’s famous places to visit, a intervention is proposed in order to improve the tourists ride. Vases would be placed in on side of the street, and lamp posts would be installed on the other side. This way, all the wiring that goes through peoples heads would disappear and give a clearer view to the Ottoman style buildings that exist on the street.

From the moment people arrive at the square, they would come across historic buildings like the Maksem and the Republic Monument. Between the tracks of the tourist tram and the Maksem museum, a timeline is placed that would highlight the most relevant events of the history of the square and the country. Lights would be implemented to contrast the square’s cement floor with the content described in the timeline. Informative texts and high relief images will be fixed to the board using metal plates.

Interventions on the floor must dialogue with the surrounding sidewalks and maintains the existing hue to keep users in a familiar place. The project contemplates the removal of the current surface and installation of new cement boards, providing a brand new look. Pieces dimension is 30x120cm and features three shades of gray, intends to create a mixed, contemporary, and more interesting linear pagination. The laying of LED lamps embedded in the floor in the extension of the boulevard through metal profiles promotes frequency and safety at the square all day long. They will be interspersed with the new layout and follow the same dimensions. Except for the front area, the existing lighting in the park will be preserved, in order not to carry out interventions that may misrepresent the landscape of the Gezi Park or the floor layout. This decision prevents modifying the passage of the electricity network and facilitates maintenance. Some civil readjustment works would be necessary to adapt the project to the local infrastructure, like paving, horizontal signage, electrical, hydraulic, sewer, gas, and telecommunication items. It is extremely important to hire consultancies and guarantee the compatibility of engineering projects, the verification of pathologies, and risks in the most significant areas of earthmoving or drainage systems.
