TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

URBAN SCALE APPROACH

A CITY IN TWO CONTINENTS The city dwells along the strands of Bosphorus, accompanying interesting sightseeings from Marmara to the Black Sea. The project area oversees the Bosphorus from hidden locations and even though it is 80m above the sea level and the city has various centers, Taksim square is the symbolic heart of the city which seeks more attention than any other place.

URBAN MORPHOLOGY THE BOSPHORUS, THE HILLS, THE IMPOSSIBLES The geography of the city, which is unique in its fluctuant topography and straddled lands along the Bosphorus makes it difficult to forget once visited. It is one of the most interesting places on earth, along with the most challenging problems. As the historical capital made it out of the city walls, it would not stop despite the obstacles and transform sinuously into a mega-city of fifteen million residents in its metropolitan area. Urban and green infrastructure is not sufficient for this kind of density. The poly-centric structure of the city also reflects upon the social structure and many places do not accommodate substructures with a basis for urban platforms.

URBAN VOIDS PARKS AND SQUARES Ä°stanbul is a very dynamic city, even on the outskirts and so its social life, day and night. There are various squares and parks scattered along the city but very few have both. Parks and squares are the dynamic networks and connecting nodes of lively cities and communities. When they possess the inadequate infrastructure or not at all, they become unattractive and turn into wasted, and even repulsive spaces in no time that no one wants to be around, they are as good as dead.

4

TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

The main reason for these places interpreted as dead is that they have little or too much permeability, lack the social realm, and human-scale that give no positive contribution to their surroundings. Multiuse of urban voids can improve safety and mobility, strengthen communities, enhance sustainability and contribute to the local economy by placemaking tools. Let’s see what we can do for Taksim!

TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS

GETTING CLOSER TO THE PROJECT AREA THE MONUMENT, THE SQUARE, THE PARK THE PROBLEM The project area consists of three main physical features to deal with and a hidden one. the monument has lost its emphasis, floating on its place, while taking a naughty step, when the axes disappeared into inhuman scaled pedestrian streets. The park has gone through rough days equivalent to getting heart attacks, but that is not the only reason the day is feeling moody. The square also behaves similarly, tired of loosened relations. There seems to be nothing interesting going around. Taksim Square and Gezi Park seem to forget their “raison d’être” and are sleeping all day and night. It has been like that for a while now. Let’s wake them up! Wake up Taksim! Wake up Gezi! Wake up!

6

TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

THE QUESTION A few important questions could be asked, like these ones that we hopefully managed to answer; _How do we reveal the potential of the area and make them healthy public spaces again without being disruptive and hurtful to their nature? _How can we use the potential of the existing park and embed new functions into its iconic and historical context? _What can we do to revitalize the square into a social urban space? _How can we foster and support the community through design? _How do we come through urban heat island effect?

THE SOLUTION They park and the square have not always been in their perfect mood and affected accordingly to their beloved users, it is not easy to deal with people. Taksim gets its name from the function of “sharing and distribution” of water when the Maksem was in use. As it was the center of dealing with water then, now it is dealing with people, which has similar mechanisms like the water finding its way through grooves and pipes but you have to supply the necessary structures, otherwise, it would be wasted. Such a waste of space, if it is not socially shared, where everybody feels home and reclaim the space for various events and even lazy days, increasing permeability with significant elements for comfortable access and attract people to sustain the place. Let’s see!

DESIGNING THE VOID

EXISTING SYSTEM

? 1km

the existing traces of the area are not visible anymore. there are not any trails but wide roads inside Gezi Park, which makes it more like walking in an urban area but not park, very little greenery but huge nice trees. the monument floats at the entrance of Istiklal. Cumhuriyet Street is a 40m wide pedestrian street with only one row of trees and it gets 100m as it connects to the monument and Taksim square which makes them all lose context.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

1km

8

TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

the existing traces of the area are collided and harmonized with the used to be but not implemented thoroughly historical lines, existing urban texture complementary lines, and temporary future irregular lines which especially makes the Gezi Park a memoir of history, now and future with a holistic approach to the site in general and connecting the monument, the square, and the

Current Situation Taksim district has numerous interferences, through the years by the needs and desires of the community and space. Every revision in recent years shivered the integrity of the physical space. Especially the last move that took almost all the motorized circulation under the ground, although a positive development, erased all the borders, history, and memory of the space. The main problems of the space are the lack of orientation in the vastness, the disconnections on the human scale, and the missing memories and history of the place.

Extending Gezi to the ‘original borders’ The actual land use of the site is formed by H. Prost, after the demolishment of the ‘Taksim Artillery Barracks’ for the sake of transforming an obsolete building into a public space, for Taksim Square plan and a continuous green infrastructure for the city. Named as ‘Gezi Park’, offering a loop trail surrounded by strict tree rows on the exterior, and more monumental hardcovered piazza inside, which considered the issues of re-arranging the logic of the original space use of the Historical Gezi Park Plan, in the first proposal.

Re-shaping Square

‘Cumhuriyet

Street’

and

‘Taksim Republic Monument’ had been placed in a very particular space in 1928, which had a centric position and formed a physical square in a roundabout and axial connections with the surroundings, that also changed within time, and became an island in an ocean with the latest pedestrianization revision that implemented in 2013. Proposal offering the ‘re-creating Cumhuriyet Street’ which is a very important part of the ‘Istanbul Trade Axis’ by using the lines of the past, blending with the new connections to scaling both Monument and Taksim Squares.

Arranging Functional Urban Voids Proposal sustains programmable and flexible spaces for triggering public use, besides re-generating the urban void. ‘Taksim Square’ with a natural podium from park direction can be used for bigger events outside daily use, and ‘Gezi Courtyard’ would be the new heart of Taksim, which surrounded a new pedestrian trail ‘Gezi Skywalk’ encouraging people to visit various functions and events, from sports to concerts, festivals to exhibitions, during all seasons of the year. Park would be a new social and cultural hub for the city.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Taksim Square consists of significant public spaces that needs to be re-linked and re-thought. *** Let’s think of a patchwork and bring all the pieces together.

A patchwork is multi-everything! Different pieces collectively complement each other.

12 TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

A patchwork provides multiplicity and it is open ended. It is rich, colorful and full of possibilities just like how we intend Taksim to be.

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE The new design for Taksim and Gezi Park will help shaping a new generation’s life. Taksim is and will always be a part of the collective memories.

20.09.2022

Ayşe Kura, 54, İstanbul Public Art Artist “This photo is very dear to me. It represents a turning point in my life. I recall that day with immense joy. It was an autumn day in 2022, My mother took me to the re-opening of gezi park after its renovations. An public art workshop was taking place. That was the first time I heard about the concept of “public art” and immediately, I was blown away.”

TAKSIM FOR ALL! A grid for the city The design provides an urban life enriched with multiplicity and collectivity. It creates a common ground for differences and a wide range of experiences. The grid is universal yet editable to its pieces, thus the design does not impose programs, it only offers possibilities. The grid is used as a design tool for creating patchworks and connections.

The Scale: Human Centered Design The Grid design for Taksim Squre works on many levels and tackling the scale issue is one of them. While the large scale of the urban squares has a positive effect in the city, it can be uncomfortable for people who are generally used to human and street scale. Grid creates 5 m x 5 m partitions on the surface of the square, additionally the pattern creates even smaller planes, this way human centered design is ensured. 34 TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

ART IN THE PARK Art in public in the center of the international metropolis Istanbul: Taksim and Gezi Park Due to the general interest in this public place, the artistic example of the Gezi-Park includes a participation that appeals to all art lovers in the city on various levels. The Concept: Nationally and internationally recognized visual artists can apply for participation in a public competition every year on a topic selected by a jury. The jury is made up of a cross-section of Turkish cultural institutions and art actors based in Istanbul. The annual themes could for example be: sports and the arts / Turkish artists invite international colleagues to collaborate / art time machine: ancient handicrafts and high-tech / the animal in the arts / artistic architecture / international women’s art / Intercultural comparisons of image and written culture - or carpet culture / art by migrants…. In order to take into account Istanbul’s cosmopolitanism and international reputation, as well as its national heritage and contemporary creative potential, the competitions are advertised for 50% Turkish and 50% international artists. Art education plays an important role in today’s society. Summer schools on the annual theme, workshops, children’s programs, guided tours and moderated discussions about art should take place regularly. It would be ideal if the residents of the city with a diverse cultural background, prior artistic knowledge and different social classes participate and are inspired by advanced artistic works, appreciate the place and feel connected to it. A collaboration with the Ataturk public library on the respective annual themes is recommended. The close proximity to Gezi and Taksim is ideal for including this cultural actor in the overall picture. Financing: Access to art in public should be low-threshold and free of charge. In order to make this happen and to give the curatorial content and working methods as much leeway and openness as possible, mixed funding from state and private funds is necessary. Donations are welcome. Strong politicization and commercialization are not desired. The goal is a harmonious balance of interests. Art is particularly suitable as a mediator and impetus for communication. It can enable to bring different cultures together and integrate marginalized groups. It can initiate the discourse on current contemporary issues and ultimately reflect the liveliness of Istanbul creativity.

EXISTING TREES

74 TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

When we look at Taksim Square, we can see that the tree species we encounter are plants that are widely used in the Turkish landscape. Sycamore, Ash, Maple, Magnolia and Redbud species are some of the important tree species used in Turkish gardens. They are among the tree species that we see intensely in Taksim Square. They maintain their existence with their historical texture and their standing that defies the years. What we have to do is to protect and develop these values.

PROPOSED TREES

76 TAKSIM URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

In order to ensure the vegetative integrity of Taksim Square and other interconnected public spaces and to benefit from the effect of color and odor transitions, plants that can be used in the region were selected as well as the existing tree species. A AREA In this region, it was aimed especially for people to meet agricultural trees and to experience nature by collecting the fruit from the tree. For this reason, there are apricot, cherry, pomegranate, olive and laurel trees among the prominent trees. B AREA In this region, linden and lilac were used together. The main purpose is to enable people to experience the fragrance and color elements along the way. While creating the Alle effect, the viewing angle is widened to be permeable instead of a closed structure. C AREA Since it is one of the areas where children will spend time frequently, it has been provided to create a safe area where they can set up a swing and explore nature freely. The Japanese cherry used in the spring will make children admire nature with its magnificent colors. The leaves of ginkgo biloba in different forms will also create an interesting visual feast.

Re-shaping ‘Cumhuriyet Street’ and Square ‘Taksim Republic Monument’ had been placed in a very particular space in 1928, which had a centric position and formed a physical square in a roundabout and axial connections with the surroundings, that also changed within time, and became an island in an ocean with the latest pedestrianization revision that implemented in 2013.

Taksim Square represents democracy more than any other place in the city. A universal grid works as the ultimate equalizer yet it doesn’t eliminate the differences rather it allows room for change.
