The Low Beskids
The Low Beskids are dominated by nature. They are full of forests, charming valleys and small villages. They delight with their omnipresent tranquillity and greenness. You will not find big cities or industrial centres there. The air is clean and smells of trees, flowers and herbs. Their history is also rich. The land used to be inhabited by Lemko people who grazed sheep and cultivated their land. They were craftsmen and excellent carpenters who built their wooden chyże (Lemko cottages) and beautiful churches which constitute the landmark of this region. History was cruel to them. They were forced to leave their land during resettlement operations in 1945 and 1947. They left behind beautiful temples, roadside crosses, orchards and houses which have been falling into ruin over the years. They also left ubiquitous peace, unspoiled
nature, traditions including their cuisine and rituals. Today all this is so characteristic about the Low Beskids.
We visit the Low Beskids in order to hike in the forests along almost deserted trails – it is a paradise for active leisure enthusiasts. There are numerous cycling and, in winter, cross-country skiing trails. We go there to participate in horse riding tours and to see stables of hucul ponies. In autumn, people choose this place to go mushroom picking and take part in the Feast of Red Pine Mushroom. Wooden architecture lovers, enthusiasts of Orthodox church art and history fans visit this place as well in order to visit wonderful sacred UNESCO sites. The Beskid woods hide the First and Second World War relics. Renovated cemeteries with touching inscriptions create the history of the place.
A house which smells of freshly baked bread
Among the valleys of the Low Beskids, in one of picturesque villages there is a place called ‘Malowane Wierchy’ (‘Painted Peaks’). This is a genuine agrotourism farm – cosy, smelling of bread, surrounded by meadows where animals graze. This is a place where people eat
their meals at one table. Right next to the house there is a garden where vegetables and herbs grow. The hosts are always of assistance to their guests, suggest the best spots in the vicinity, and have great contact with people. What is more, they will feed you like nowhere else.
Cosy rooms
Malowane Wierchy offers 5 spacious and comfortable rooms with private bathrooms to their guests. They are light and have regional accents which makes them extremely
cosy. The facility is categorised by the Polish Federation of Rural Tourism and has the highest rank.
Home-made food
As befits a real agrotourism farm, the hosts of Malowane Wierchy serve delicious, seasonal dishes created from local products to their guests. Vegetables, fruit and herbs are grown in the garden. Dairy comes from a neighbouring farm. The hosts make cold meats and delicious pates themselves. Their pantry is full of home-made jams, juices, tinned vegetables and forest mushrooms. The hostess bakes bread and cakes herself. Moreover, guests can try amazing honey which comes from their own apiary. Some delicacies can be bought and taken home as a delicious souvenir from Gładyszów.
Dishes which are served come from the regional cuisine, hence, they are simple but substantial, give energy for the
whole day and surprise with a unique flavour. The speciality of Malowane Wierchy is beetroot soup and dumplings filled with cheese which are called ‘zlepieńce’ at the place. They are served with red pine mushrooms from neighbouring forests. At the place you will also have a chance to try dishes of Lemko cuisine which will be a great experience for enthusiasts of new flavours. On request, vegan, gluten-free and other specially prepared meals can be made (as long as it is possible for the hosts).
Malowane Wierchy Agrotourism Farm belongs to the Lesser Poland Culinary Heritage Network. What is more, their pickled red pine mushrooms are listed as Traditional Products of Lesser Poland (Uście Gorlickie Commune).
A living room with a fireplace
A living room constitutes the heart of the whole house –somebody always bustles around it, you can hear cheerful chats and laughter, it always smells of fresh delicacies as
they are served exactly there. On cool evenings one may sit comfortably on sofas with a mug of hot tea and have long conversations. There is a kitchenette available to guests.
For small guests
Cosy, family atmosphere makes Malowane Wierchy an ideal place for young visitors. All children are welcome there and a number of attractions and facilities await them. A crib, a baby bath, a changing table, a high chair or a bottle warmer are available on request.
A big, green garden is a great space for having fun outdoors. A playground with a trampoline, a house with a slide, a sand pit, swings and a climbing wall is an additional advantage. There is a volleyball net and goals, hence, guests can play volleyball and football. Table football and table tennis are situated at the shed.
In case the weather is not great, there is a playroom with toys, drawing accessories and games in the building. In winter children can make a snowman or go sledding.
A real treat for children will be to observe animals which live at the place – there are horses, cows and hens. In summer workshops and talks about the life and significance of bees in nature are organised – guests can watch working insects in a glazed beehive. In a vegetable garden children will see their favourite vegetables and taste raspberries straight from a bush.
A Finnish sauna is at guests’ disposal. This is a place where one can rest and relax after a day spent hiking in the mountains or cycling. A sauna bath is a great way to
get rid of toxins from your organism, cleanse the upper respiratory tract, improve texture of your skin and enhance your well-being.
Malowane Wierchy is a great starting point for a variety of cycling trips, both easier and more difficult ones. With ease (or with help of the hosts) you can plan a loop which will be several or several dozen kilometres long. All the
trails run along asphalt, gravel roads or mountain trails. The farm offers a bike rental with 15 mountain bikes. Moreover, you can rent a helmet and child safety seats.
