Wierchomla, a pearl of the Beskids
Wierchomla Mała is a charming, beautifully located village famous for a ski station and picturesque hiking or cycling trails. It lies in the Beskid Sądecki at 450-600 m, in the valley of the Wierchomlanka Stream. It is surrounded by mountains from every side – forested mountain tops of Lembarczek (917m), Garbówka (790m) and a long ridge which extends from Bacówka over Wierchomla (a tourist shelter) to Pusta Wielka (1,061 m). The village was founded on the privilege of Bishop Maciejowski in 1603. It was dwelled in by Wallachian shepherds who, after some time, started to be called Lemko people. Wierchomla Mała is the westernmost village of the Beskid Sądecki where you can admire Lemko
Richness of the landscape
Poprad Landscape Park is not only one of the oldest landscape parks in the Carpathians but also one of the most beautiful and the most abundant in terms of scenery. Forests cover approximately 70% of its surface and the dominant species are the beech, the fir, the linden and the alder. It is distinguished by the presence of numerous mineral water springs – 70 intakes which constitute 20% of all Polish resources. Mineral water is an undeniable treasure of this region – it was the reason why various resorts such as Piwniczna-Zdrój, Żegiestów-Zdrój, Muszyna and Krynica-Zdrój were established.
architecture. In the 19th century the Polish and Jews started appearing there. Right after the Second World War, Lemko people were deported to Regained Lands. People from Piwniczna found a place for themselves in an almost empty village. At present, Wierchomla Mała is a charming tourist place, picturesquely situated between Muszyna and Piwniczna-Zdrój in Poprad Landscape Park. We can see there a small, wooden church from 1821 which originally served as the Orthodox Church of St Michael the Archangel. Today, the temple belongs to the Roman Catholic parish and is a part of the Wooden Architecture Route, reminding us about the history of this border area.
