In the green Beskids

The Low Beskids are an exceptional region created by not very high mountains and hills covered with forests – Lackowa, their highest peak, does not rise above 1,000 m. However, they always delight with nature, the aroma of mushrooms and stories of people who used to inhabit this area. The air is crystal clear as there are no big cities or industrial areas. In the valleys you will find small villages, where Lemko people would live. They were Wallachian shepherds, God-fearing and hard-working people who, later on, were called Lemkos. They established their settlements, built chyże (Lemko cottages) and erected their Orthodox churches on hills. After the Second World War they were forcefully resettled and had to leave their households, roadside shrines and wooden temples behind.

These mountains and the heritage of Lemkos create the uniqueness of the Low Beskids and Uście Gorlickie Commune. Life has its own pace there but still the region abounds in attractions. Tourists hike in the mountains, visit small museums or wooden temples listed as UNESCO sites and spend time by Klimkówka Lake. They take advantage of small guest houses and guest rooms located in small villages of the Low Beskids. They benefit from peaceful places which allow relaxation and contact with nature which, consequently, let them leave their stressful life in a big city behind.

ORLIK IN THE GREEN BESKIDS 4

Uście Gorlickie

The western part of the Low Beskids is associated with Wysowa-Zdrój. Uście Gorlickie, the seat of the commune under the same name, is situated a bit further to the north. It is a small, but beautifully located and interesting town which lies in the valley of the Ropa River, right by Klimkówka Lake.

Initially, the place was called Uście Wołoskie (the 17th century), a century later it gained a name Uście Ruskie. The name Uście Gorlickie has been used since 1952. During the Interwar Period, Uście became one of the main social centres in the western Lemko region. After the resettlement of Lemko people in 1947, the town was the only population centre in this part of the Beskids. After 1956 a lot of Lemko people came back – due to this fact a Lemko character of the region has been preserved. Uście Gorlickie is the only commune in the Low Beskids inhabited in majority by Lemko community.

In the heart of the town, our attention is drawn to the monument of Lemko people who died in the battle with the Nazi occupants during the Second World War. You will find there a cemetery from the period of the First World War. It is worth visiting the Orthodox Church of St Paraskeva from 1796.

Four-legged residents of Orlik

Two cats and a small, charming dog live in Orlik. On warm days, they spend all their time outside. In winter, if guests suffer from animal-related allergies, pets are not allowed in the common area. Additionally, because of these four-legged residents, other animals are not allowed in the facility.

Attractions

Orlik is surrounded by a big garden where adult guests can rest and children play. On the terrace there is leisure furniture where guests can spend sunny mornings or warm, summer evenings. A barbecue or a campfire can be organised there as well.

Just a few hundred metres from the house, there is Klimkówka Lake – it is a great spot for walks, various forms of recreation or fishing. Nearby forests are full of mushrooms so it is worth visiting the place in autumn. A rental operates nearby where one can rent kayaks or pedal boats. There is also a bike rental and interesting cycling trails. The stable of hucul ponies in Regietów is only 8 km from Orlik. If you want to visit Wysowa-Zdrój, you need to cover a distance of 10 km. Krynica-Zdrój is 27 km away. If you feel like exploring more remote areas, on the Slovak side there is Bardejov. West of Uście Gorlickie Magura National Park spreads.

ORLIK ATTRACTIONS 8

Apitherapy – bee houses

Guests who stay at Orlik can take advantage of a bee house from May to September (if the weather is good). What is apitherapy? It is a kind of therapy with the use of bees and their products. Apitherapy makes use of bees which are placed in specially designed houses with designated places to lie down. The insects are separated with a special net thanks to which they cannot enter the area designated for people (the exits from beehives are located outside such a house so bees can do their job without any obstacles). People allergic to bee venom can take advantage of this therapy as well – they sit or lie in the house, breathe in ionised air without bacteria, viruses and pathogenic fungi and enjoy the aroma of honey. The sound of insects buzzing allows relaxation and the presence of such a big number of working bees releases energy so beneficial for people.

Apitherapy – for whom?

You can stay in the bee house from 10 minutes to 12 hours. After the first inhalation session, you will feel physically and mentally better and you will notice an inflow of vitality. The therapy helps in the case of insomnia, it is recommended in diseases of the nervous system such as paresis, neuritis, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. Moreover, it can be beneficial in the case of constant fatigue or chronic stress. This kind of therapy can be also implemented in the treatment of kidney inflammation, prostatitis, rheumatological disease, high blood pressure, chronic headaches or migraines. Air saturated with honey will be helpful with diseases of the respiratory tract, chronic pneumonia, bronchial asthma, weakened immune system and allergies.
