In the land of Podhale Highlanders
Everyone who wants to reach a place close to the Tatras, the Gorce or the Pieniny Mountains should choose Czarny Dunajec as their destination. The place is especially attractive for those who look for tranquillity, an intimate atmosphere and relaxation far from the hustle and bustle of a big city. The inhabitants of the commune created a lot of accommodation facilities for those who long for this kind of place. Moreover, if you really want to get to know the culture or the dialect of Podhale, you should stay at a real highlander’s house. One of the attractions
of the commune, which may encourage you to visit the place, is Czarny Dunajec, the river. It gives you a number of possibilities to spend your free time. The river is crossed by a lot of water steps which create small pools around which we will find camping spots. If you have not packed your luggage yet, do it fast as, apart from views, Czarny Dunajec offers wonderful historic sites such as the Church of the Holy Trinity built in the 18th century or the Jewish Cemetery which hides the secrets of the Second World War.
The cuisine created in harsh conditions
Delicious food is claimed to be as or even more important than rest and there is plenty of it in Podhale. Obviously, oscypek reigns so it would be embarrassing not to taste it being in Podhale. Apart from oscypek, there is barberry, moskole, hałuski, bombolki… These are dishes served in the restaurants of Podhale. We associate the cuisine of the region with sheep cheese or generously greased roasted mutton with cabbage. And with Highlander tea! In spite of the fact that the cuisine of Podhale is based on simple ingredients, not as sophisticated as the cuisines of other regions, it brings to mind mountains that is why so many people have fallen in love with it. Harsh weather conditions, a long winter and poor soil made it difficult for women from Podhale to prepare dishes for their families. Such food had to be filling, provide energy and warm up as it was prepared for those who had to work hard. Dairy and vegetables, which did not mind barren soil, constituted the basic ingredients. Grease was a must – either in the form of home-made butter or lard with pork scratchings. The limited number of ingredients did not discourage the hostesses from Podhale. Out of few products they could make delicious and substantial dishes which we can enjoy until now.
Perła Dunajca Restaurant
If you feel encouraged by the description of the dishes of Podhale, get in your car and go to Czarny Dunajec, to Perła Dunajca Restaurant (the Pearl of Dunajec Restaurant). You will be delighted with delicious, homemade dishes as the owners place importance on traditional, regional meals which constitute the heart of Highlander cuisine. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes so everybody will be able to choose the right one for themselves irrespective of an occasion – a family dinner, a meeting with friends or a fast meal after work. The restaurant offers combination meals – a pork chop with fried cabbage and potatoes, roasted rib with Highlander
cabbage or a Highlander’s potato pancake. You can also choose from grilled pork neck, skewers, roasted pork knuckle, drumsticks or pork with bacon and onion. Traditionally, we can have broth and dumplings with a variety of fillings. The chef has not forgotten about the youngest guests – they have their separate section on the menu with ‘Dwarf’s delicacy or chicken cutlets with chips and salad. The ones with a sweet tooth can choose pancakes with cheese or jam. Apart from dishes of Polish cuisine, you can have aromatic coffee and delicious desserts, for instance cheesecake or apple pie. It does make mouths water!
Special events
You can dine at Perła Dunajca but you may also organise an event there. Parents who look for a place for a baptism or communion party may rent the place and have their family taste the regional delicacies and feel the highlander climate. The facility also organises anniversaries or birthday parties. It can hold even 250 people so invite your nearest and dearest, have fun and relish delicious food.
