KišKis PrancišKus be abejo

Pranciškus the Hare, Without Doubt

Vytautas V. Landsbergis

Kiškis Pranciškus be abejo

Vytautas V. Landsbergis is a master of the nonsense tale, the genre that suits best his unorthodox view of life. This book is a series of joyful and witty stories about a hare called Pranciškus. This childishly naughty offspring of the hare family wakes up one morning all alone, as his parents have gone to the forest to pick bilberries. Determined to find them, Pranciškus sets off for the Bilberry Meadow, and has unexpected and frightening adventures on the way. He finds out many strange things about the forest, and receives much advice. He is now a wise and experienced hare, who knows that no matter what, the rules of the hares should prevail. Then he succeeds in everything, in fighting ghosts, rescuing the Sun, and finding his parents.

The poet recreates the unique world of the jackdaw, and tells us about the bird’s thoughts and feelings. Sometimes the jackdaw is a “Home-bird”, sometimes she travels “To the Baltic Sea”, visits the “Writers’ Home” in Sweden, or goes on “A Journey across Vast Oceans”. Sometimes she “Sees the Movement of the Universe” and reflects “On Love and Death”. Sometimes she is an “Optimist”, and sometimes a “Pessimist”. These cheerful poems, full of philosophical wisdom, will be equally appreciated by children, parents and grandparents.

Kirminas paukštis:tavo pirmoji knyga apie skraidymo mena The Worm Bird:Your First Book about the Art of Flying Author: Marius Jonutis Target reader: 14–16 years old Year of publication: 2009 Publisher: Tyto alba, Vilnius, www.tytoalba.lt Number of pages: 96 ISBN 978-9986-16-686-3 This is a very unusual book by an artist and writer. It consists of two layers. Every second spread is coloured and tells an allegorical story about a worm who asked a bird to teach him how to fly. Whereas the monochrome spreads contain questions about the worm story, as well as practical assignments for readers and explanation of some of the words used in the story. However, not the primary, but some unexpected and possible meanings of words are explicated. This exploratory or even philosophical dimension of the book encourages young readers to think actively, and to observe the world surrounding them as well as themselves.

This book contains ten wise and elegant stories full of insight about winter, and also about the colour white. The artist creates unexpected characters and equally surprising adventures: a small white house escapes from its naughty street and causes great chaos in the town; a tiny steamboat gets swallowed up by a huge fish and travels the oceans in its belly; pandas from White Bamboo country are decorated in black and white patches like cows; starlings go skiing along a path of jasmine petals … The author never lacks the imagination to invent unique images. His stories ring a poetic, and sometimes funny or paradoxical note.

Obuoliu pasakos ir kriaušiu Tales of Apples and Pears

Author: Vytautas V. Landsbergis Target reader: from 11 years Year of publication: 2008 Publisher: Dominicus Lituanus, Vilnius, www.dominicus.lt Number of pages: 95 ISBN 978-9955-811-06-0

The first edition of this book appeared in 1999 and was somewhat of a shock to readers in Lithuania, but soon became a household book read by all members of a family. The story is full of ambiguities, allusions, wordplay, irony, and paradoxes. The plot is fed by several lines, each of which concerns something “impossible”: an apple named Antanas falls in love with Frost, a crow dreams to marry King Vytautas the Great, but only manages to become the wife of a sparrow named Alioša… The writer skilfully exploits folkloric motifs as well as literary clichés. This fantasy tale has become a path-breaking work in the history of Lithuanian literature for children.

This is a rhymed tale about the Ice Boy, the little grandson of the old man Cold. The Ice Boy was a nice child, kind and merry, but tended to show off a little bit. Once he travelled with his father in a snow storm, and started boasting that he could “turn the Earth into solid ice” if he wished to. But his grandfather said he should first try to freeze a peasant chopping wood. The Ice Boy tried as hard as he could, blowing cold, but the peasant kept working and stayed warm. Wiping the sweat from his brow, he put his firewood on a sledge, and off he went along the winter path. This enlightening story, created more than 50 years ago, is the perfect read for children and their parents.

In the attic of the house, she finds the head of a porcelain doll, and makes a body for the doll from sackcloth. This doll is now her best friend. They are always together. They explore the surrounding village, and wait for the girl’s mother to return. The girl (who likes changing her name) looks for a new body for her doll. The story is told through the eyes of a child, but it also deals with serious issues. The author talks about the individual’s search for an identity, about how parents and children relate to each other, about love and faith, and about old age and death, in a delicate and sympathetic manner, just as a little child perceives these things. Terapines pasakos Therapeutic Fairy Tales

Original title: Bajki terapeutyczne dla dzieci Author: Maria Molicka Target reader: 4–9 years old Year of publication: 2007 Publisher: Vaga, Vilnius, www.leidykla.vaga.lt Number of pages: 224 ISBN 978-5-415-01975-5

This book is written by a child psychologist and is for children and their carers. These tales are intended to help children when they are afraid to go to the kindergarten, or when they do not feel like going to school, when they are bullied, or have to go to hospital. The characters in the fairy tales are also afraid of darkness, or they are terminally ill, they are abandoned by their mothers, and there is violence and drinking in the family. Just like the reader, they suffer from anxiety, fear and other depressing feelings. Therapeutic Fairy Tales teaches children to look at problems without being afraid, to overcome anxiety, not to feel lonely, and to be self-reliant. The author gives some theoretical information about fear, and discusses the nature of fairy tales and theoretical tales.

However, she has one problem – she does not like to pick up her toys and put them in place. “I am not a toy picker-upper”, announces Kornelia. Unexpectedly, her toys are taken away by Elf the Mess.
