BIO-BASED Materials & Finishes

Biobased Xorel In 2013 Carnegie introduced Biobased Xorel, a plant-based product with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Life Cycle Xorel's plant-based content is derived from sugar cane production. Sugar cane has a much lower carbon emission rates when compared with most other biobased materials. For each ton of sugar cane used to produce this new form of Xorel, 2.5 tons of carbon is captured. Xorel is innately flame retardant and stain resistant, no additional chemicals need to be applied in finishing. All Xorel products can be returned to Carnegie at the end of their life cycle. Installation Maintenance on the Carnegie Xorel products are very low because of the inherent stain retardancy. It is almost impossible to tear with no wear for 1,000,000 double rubs. It is also antibacterial and colorfast. Vacuuming on occasion is recommended for dust and dirt removal. If spot cleaning is necessary, Carnegie recommends hot water and a clean sponge.

Third-Party Certifications & Material Transparency Cradle to Cradle In 2013 Biobased Xorel achieved Cradle to Cradle Gold Certification and awarded a Platinum Level Material Health Certificate by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

Eco- friendly Nonflammable Enhances acoustics

Typical applications Woolfelt improves acoustic conditions in spaces which makes it suitable to use on floors, walls and ceilings. Woolfelt can be glued directly onto walls. First the glue is applied on the walls, then the Woolfelt is pressed into the glue. The natural properties of Woolfelt (non-flammable, insulating, dirt- and water repellent) make it suitable to use in public buildings such as hospitals, theatres, restaurants and museums, even without additional treatments. It is also used to make products like cushions, lamps and curtains, but also to make garments for puppets, appliqué and crafting with children.

General Information Woolfelt made of Pure New Wool in 1,2,3,4 and 5 mm thick and 90 colours on rolls with a width of 183cm and a length of +/- 20m. There is not a minimum order quantity.

Woolfelt general information The Woolfelt is made of the wool of Merino sheep. With natural soap and hot water the fibers of the wool are rubbed together and become Woolfelt. This is possible because of the scales on the wool that open up when heated. FROM FIBER TO FELT: A JOURNEY THROUGH OUR PRODUCTION FACILITY When our Merino wool arrives at our felting factory it has already made a long journey: The wool, which is originally from South America and the South of Europe, is washed in a scourcing plant before it arrives at our felting factory, where the wool transforms into woolfelt.

1.

The wool fibres are mixed to obtain the right colour or quality

2.

The fibers are loosened up

3.

On big rolls with small needles the fibers are loosened even further and carded in one direction

4.

The carded fibers are laid down perpendicular on top of each other

5.

The carded fibers are gently pre-felted into a carded fleece

6.

By pushing or pulling the carded fleece the right thickness is acquired

7.

With steam, natural soap and friction the carded fleece is felted into a concentrated mass

8.

The felt is washed to rinse out the soap of the felting process

9.

The woolfelt is dyed into the right colour and rinsed afterwards to clean dye remains

10.

The felt is stretched to the desirable length and width and dried to fixate the size.

11.

Spiral shaped knives shave the ends of the wool fibers for a smooth surface.

12.

Final inspection: While moving through the machine at a slow speed, the felt is being inspected for quality, stains and holes by the staff.

Third-Party Certifications & Material Transparency Holland Wool Felt, 3MM Wool Felt The transformation of the wool fleece into wool felt takes place in Europe where the end product ships to us from Delft in the Netherlands. Manufactured entirely in the European Union with the following EU certifications and classifications: ●

Pure New Wool, certified by the "International Wool Secretariat".

Free of Harmful Substances, including lead, earning the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification.

Not flammable, conforming to UNE 23735 Class M1 (highest class).*

Certified Cradle to Cradle (a certification awarded to products that pursue an innovative vision of ecologically-intelligent design that eliminates the concept of waste).

Renewable Resource, Sustainable, Green Wool felt is a natural product. The processing of wool requires very little environmental impact compared to other natural fibers or human-made fibers. Felt has a life cycle that is substantially longer than other material. And since wool felt is made of sheep’s wool, this means that after the felt product has been used or become worn out, it can be safely disposed of as it is 100% biodegradable. Also Wool Design Felt qualifies for LEED® certification as MR Credit 6.0 Rapidly Renewable Resource as the sheep's wool is harvested in a sustainable manner. The felts have tested and certified to meet the human-ecological requirements of the standard presently established for products with direct contact to skin according to Product Class II of Oeko-Tex® Standard 100.

Conclusion This material is good to use in spaces where you want to improve acoustic conditions and it’s really important that is eco- friendly and nonflammable. This type of wallcovering is better than other wall coverings that are made out of polyester or plastic because it is healthy for the environment and it’s 100% recyclable.

Fireclay Floor and Wall Tile Since 1986, Fireclay has been reinventing, redefining, and radicalizing the industry. As the first tile company to be certified as a Benefit Corporation, Fireclay is proud to continue standing on its founding principles. Fireclay does this by committing to using sustainable manufacturing practices, using recycled materials, and taking care of its employees, while putting customers first. Additionally, in 2019, Fireclay was enlisted by the non-profit, Climate Neutral, as a Climate Neutral Certified company due it’s efforts in measuring, reducing, and offsetting its entire carbon footprint. All signature ceramic Tile is handmade in California using domestically-sourced materials. The Factory uses 100% renewable electricity. Through partnerships with Carbon Fund, Pachama, and Climate Neutral, we offset carbon emissions from all parts of our operation including the sourcing of raw materials, our whole production process, and all inbound & outbound freight emissions.

Fireclay Floor and Wall Tile Life Cycle Overview

Fireclay Floor and Wall Tile Life Cycle 1. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This EPD includes representative products derived from Fireclay’s line of products produced at the facility located in Aromas, California. Ceramic tiles are primarily made up of clays, silica and other additives and then molded into shape followed by firing into a kiln. Ceramic tiles can be glazed or unglazed. 2. PRODUCT SPECIFICATION AND APPLICATION RULES The products considered in the EPD meet the following technical specifications: § ANSI A137.1: American National Standard Specifications for Ceramic Tile § Fire Testing: Classification: A, Flame Spread: 0, Smoke Developed: 0 3. APPLICATION Ceramic tile products are commonly used in a variety of applications including commercial, light commercial, institutional, and residential interior and exterior applications. 4. MANUFACTURING The manufacturing begins with mining of raw materials such as clay, granite, mullite and other natural minerals. These raw materials are then mixed with water in a ball mill. The slurry formed in this process is the body slip which will form the bulk of the ceramic tile. Next the slip is pumped to the spray dryer. This device uses burners and gravity to form a powder. The resulting powder is then extruded into the form of a pre-fired or “green” tile. The green tiles pass through a drying apparatus to further reduce moisture content. From there the tiles proceed down the glaze line for application. Tiles are then stored in a buffer area for a short time before proceeding to another dryer. After the final dryer, the product is then fed into the kiln. Inside the kiln thermochemical reactions take place that remove all VOCs and fuse the ceramic tile into the familiar solid and durable product. The entire process incorporates extensive recycling. Fireclay collects glass bottles through municipal recycling programs and crushes them, procures granite fines from quarries and uses internal scrap from their manufacturing process into their product. Once the tiles are manufactured, they are packaged in cardboard boxes.

Fireclay Floor and Wall Tile Life Cycle 5. PACKAGING 6. PRODUCT INSTALLATION Product installation requirements and procedure are provided in guidelines by Tile Council of North America(TCNA). Mortar is used to adhere tile to the floor substrate while grout is used to fill in gaps between the tiles. 4.5% of waste is assumed for mortar and grout. Apart from these, installation solution made of acrylate and water are also recommended for installation.

7. DISPOSAL All waste has been classified according to regional-specific legislation as laid out in Section 2.8.6 in Part A: Life Cycle Assessment Calculation Rules and Report Requirements from UL Environment.

Third-Party Certifications & Material Transparency Certified B Corp Fireclay Tile has a score of 115 with the average company being at 50.9 points and the highest score at 200.

The LCA is a data sheet that lets us know the environmental impact, or global warming impacts of our product as it pertains to carbon emissions.

Conclusion There are several advantages to ceramic tiles. They are fire resistant, non-combustible, durable, last a lifetime and are extremely easy to maintain. Other tile companies use products and chemicals in their titles that are not sustainable and harmful and do not put warning labels. They also do not have full transparency. FireClay tiles are sustainable and is a great ceramic material company.

SMILE PLASTICS At Smile Plastics, they have two main goals. Firstly, they want to create the most beautiful circular plastics in the world – 100% recycled and 100% recyclable materials. Secondly, they want to challenge ideas about “waste” and the system that creates it. Smile Plastics sheets require little maintenance. Surface dirt can easily be removed using a mild detergent and warm water, but the material is relatively soft so abrasive cleaners should be used with caution. THE CLOSED LOOP: EVERY END IS A NEW BEGINNING Their decorative surface panels are a step towards a comprehensive circular economy and closed-loop material cycle. They follow a zero-waste production model – seeing our off-cuts as opportunities. They re-use pieces generated by production and can offer our customers the possibility to reclaim the material. In a world of increasing waste handling costs and regeneration awareness, this is a compelling possibility. Materials are designed to last but at the end of their life, they can be recycled over and over again both through local recyclers as well as through our buy-back schemes, so that the plastics are constantly regenerated. We can take back your offcuts, plus any end-of-life Smile Plastics materials. We re-work them into new panels, closing the loop and ensuring the plastics can brighten someone else’s day in the future.

LIVE CYCLE 1. 2.

To keep the carbon footprint low, Smile Plastics equipment uses a fraction of the energy that traditional plastics processing machinery uses. They try to source supplies as close as possible to the micro-factory in South Wales. They keep the processing of the materials as low-intensity as possible. Not only do they have a lower carbon footprint, the plastic compounds also don’t become denatured. This allows them to repurpose them over and over again.

The Smile Plastics panels are a springboard for the creativity and imagination of designers and architects across the world. The versatility of the materials means that the sustainable plastics have been employed in a wide spectrum of product applications, from furniture, frames to chopping boards

CONCLUSION This material is made for countertops, walls and other surfaces. It is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable material and 100% waterproof. This is a great product for bathrooms, kitchens and accent walls. There is no EPD but this product tries to keep the carbon footprint low and give a new life to wasted plastic products.
