ELLESMERE COLLEGE BALL GOWN PARADE The Ellesmere College Ball Gown Parade is being held in the College Gym on Friday 8th August at 7.30 pm. This event is held each year as a fundraiser to help enable the Senior A Netball Team to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Tournament which is being held in Invercargill in 2014. Fundraising is an important part of being in a sports team, especially teams that are involved in tournaments that necessitate travel over long distances. Costs this year are higher than last, due to the increased travel to Invercargill (2013 Christchurch) and increased entry fee. The Netball team have already raised a significant amount of money earlier this year
when they catered for the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships at Rawhiti Domain and a successful Ball Gown Parade will certainly help the girls leaving a small amount that they need to fund personally. The Ellesmere College Ball Gown Parade was originally started in 2004 when the Girls’ Rugby First XV were going to the South Island Championships held in Oamaru. It was put to Tessa Clark (nee McEvedy) and Ashleigh Taylor (nee O’Neill), the captain and vicecaptain of the team, to work out some fundraising ideas. the public, plus raise some money for the trip to Oamaru. With the help of Kevin Stacey, who was the coach, and the rest of the team the Annual Ball Gown Parade was born. The prizes were donated from local businesses and a couple of locals were roped into being judges and Jonny Sim was the Master of Ceremonies for the night. From these beginnings it has grown into a night that is always enjoyed by everyone that attends. This year our judges are Mrs Pam Thomas and Ms Hannah Young – teachers at Ellesmere College who contribute to and coach Netball and girls Rugby; and Tylie Cridge, an ex-pupil who was a very high achiever in her chosen sports of
