ELLESMERE COLLEGE BALL GOWN PARADE The Ellesmere College Ball Gown Parade is being held in the College Gym on Friday 8th August at 7.30 pm. This event is held each year as a fundraiser to help enable the Senior A Netball Team to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Tournament which is being held in Invercargill in 2014.

Fundraising is an important part of being in a sports team, especially teams that are involved in tournaments that necessitate travel over long distances. Costs this year are higher than last, due to the increased travel to Invercargill (2013 Christchurch) and increased entry fee. The Netball team have already raised a significant amount of money earlier this year

when they catered for the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships at Rawhiti Domain and a successful Ball Gown Parade will certainly help the girls leaving a small amount that they need to fund personally.

The Ellesmere College Ball Gown Parade was originally started in 2004 when the Girls’ Rugby First XV were going to the South Island Championships held in Oamaru. It was put to Tessa Clark (nee McEvedy) and Ashleigh Taylor (nee O’Neill), the captain and vicecaptain of the team, to work out some fundraising ideas. They decided that a Ball Gown Parade would be a great way of getting to wear ‘that dress’ one more time and show off their gowns to

the public, plus raise some money for the trip to Oamaru. With the help of Kevin Stacey, who was the coach, and the rest of the team the Annual Ball Gown Parade was born.

The prizes were donated from local businesses and a couple of locals were roped into being judges and Jonny Sim was the Master of Ceremonies for the night. From these beginnings it has grown into a night that is always enjoyed by everyone that attends.

This year our judges are Mrs Pam Thomas and Ms Hannah Young – teachers at Ellesmere College who contribute to and coach Netball and girls Rugby; and Tylie Cridge, an ex-pupil who was a very high achiever in her chosen sports of

ELLESMERE SEARCH & RESCUE GROUP CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

The Ellesmere Search & Rescue Group recently celebrated 25 years with a luncheon to mark the occasion.

Almost sixty people attended and enjoyed catching up with past and present members.

The group was formed in 1989 after a whitebaiter was lost at sea at the

Rakaia River Mouth.

Many rescues have been made over the years, but technology (eg cell phones and the rescue helicopter) has seen a decline in local searches.

The group’s main function in recent years has been to assist in Canterbury-wide searches.

A colourful mixture of Hellebores, Camellias, early Daffodils and Polyanthus, even a late rose, was on the competition table of the July meeting of the Southbridge Garden Club. Pick of the Garden prize went to a beautiful Bird of Paradise flower grown by Leonie Inwood.

The floral art sections were won by Lesley Keppel, Deanna Sycamore and Isabel Cooper. The subject was “all dried up” and the arrangements were bright and interesting with the dried leaves, bark and painted dried flower stems.

Gay Henderson spoke to the members on Trilliums and Hellebores. Her knowledgable talk covered propagation from seed and division, where they should be planted and overall care. Gay was

LOCAL HISTORIAN HONOURED Mr Roger Gilbert, President of the Ellesmere Historical Society, has been awarded the A C Rhodes History Medal for 2014 by the Canterbury History Foundation, following the presentation of the Jim Gardner Memorial Lecture by Dr David Monger at the University of Canterbury.

Roger Gilbert is descended from a farming family long-established in the Ellesmere district. He has been well to the fore in promoting interest in its history for many years, especially since his retirement from farming.

The formation of the Ellesmere Historical Society in 1996 was primarily due to his efforts. He was the founding President and has held the office since then.

He was honoured with life membership in recognition of his sterling contribution.

Roger is prodigiously well-informed about the history of his locality and no one knows more about the history of the Ellesmere farming families and land transactions than him.

The Ellesmere Historical Society is well-known locally for the displays of historical photographs it presents at the Ellesmere A & P show, the district’s main event.

The History Foundation honours Roger Gilbert with the AC Rhodes Medal for his outstanding contribution to the history of his community, in particular for finding ways to make it accessible to the local community.

The purpose of the award, established by a generous gift from Mr Paul Rhodes and Mrs Sally Rhodes in memory of Pauls father, Alfred Cecil Rhodes in 2001, is to honour and recognise the work of a non-academic Canterbury historian who has significantly added to our knowledge of the past or has by various means advanced and popularised the subject of History in the wider Canterbury community.

travelling with the girls as umpire and Mr Daryl Johnson is our parent help for the tournament. We are always very grateful when community members support Ellesmere College. Interestingly Kath and Hannah are both ex- pupils, Daryl has always lived locally and still has a daughter at Ellesmere College. Maree has had three sons at College while her husband Murray is currently the Chairman of our Board of Trustees.

These kind of people are what make the Ellesmere College Community keep prospering: they are very willing to give up their time to help us support our pupils.

There will be raffles to purchase on the night and a light supper provided.

Make sure you come along for an evening where our Year Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen girls will again wear and show their beautiful gowns one last time.

Tickets: Adults $10.00, Children Year 8 and below $5.00 and no charge for pre-schoolers. Tickets are available from the Main Office at Ellesmere College, any of the team members above and there will also be door sales on the night.

The 2014 Ellesmere College Formal was held at the Riccarton Racecourse on Thursday 17th July. There were some

absolutely stunning dresses, but we must not forget about the boys, who also looked amazing dressed in their formal attire.

Me Korero Mo Te Hauora Hinengaro (LeT’s TaLK abouT MenTaL HeaLTH) Anxiety – Part 1 Anxiety is our physiological (i.e., bodily), cognitive (i.e., thoughts), and behavioural response to threat. It is based on fear and is different from stress, which is feeling overwhelmed by the demands that are being placed on you.

Anxiety is something that we all experience at different times in our lives and Christchurch people have recently all experienced some anxiety due to the earthquakes we have experienced.

Anxiety has been selected for through evolution because it can help to keep us safe. If you have followed my column, you may have read a little about the Fight or Flight response back when I first began talking about stress. The Fight or Flight response is an alarm system that we all have that is designed to help us fight a threat or run away from it.

It involves a series of biological responses. Take a look at this link to see a nice diagram of all of the things that are going on in your body http:// psychology.tools/threatsystem.html This fight or flight response is in most cases what we refer to when we describe anxiety symptoms.

There are other anxiety

symptoms including anxious thoughts and behaviour that I discuss further when I talk about the different anxiety disorders.

Moderate levels of anxiety actually help with performance, improve memory and increase reaction times.

So there are some positives for anxiety. However, anxiety can be the source of a lot of distress to many people and can result in significant social and work-related impairment.

There are several types of anxiety and anxietyrelated disorders and I will discuss these disorders over two issues of the Echo. Panic disorder involves the experience of anxiety symptoms, seemingly out of the blue, which have a rapid onset and short duration of approximately 5-10 minutes.

People who experience these Panic attacks often fear that there is something seriously wrong with them, that they might die or that they are going “crazy”.

Having panic attacks can result in Agoraphobia which is the fear of being in enclosed places, where escape might be difficult. People with panic disorder and agoraphobia often avoid going out for fear that they will have a panic attack and will be unable to escape.

You can have panic disorder without agoraphobia and many other anxiety disorders involve panic symptoms.

Social phobia (social anxiety disorder) is the presence of anxiety symp-

toms, which are triggered by social situations or potential social evaluation and the fear that others will judge you negatively. People can have specific social phobia in relation to performance (or public speaking), eating, or writing in front of others.

They can also have more generalised social phobia which might involve all social settings (or specific social settings or types of people) which results in avoidance of these social settings. This avoidance, while reducing anxiety symptoms temporarily, is a key maintaining factor in this disorder.

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder characterised by physiological anxiety symptoms but the core feature of this disorder is worry. People with GAD worry about a number of different things (such as health, the welfare of others, money, etc) and the worry causes distress and impairment. It is important to acknowledge that worrying is quite normal and we all do it but people with GAD engage in worry significantly more and this has a huge impact on their mood and overall wellbeing.

People can have specific phobias about things like insects, animals, heights, injections, water etc. These fears are only diagnosed as a phobia if people avoid the thing that they are afraid of and this causes distress or impairment. For example, not taking a job in a tall building because of your fear of heights would be an example of phobic behaviour.

Separation anxiety disorder is a disorder more commonly seen in children but I have also seen this in adults. This involves significant anxiety symptoms and worry when not in the presence of a caregiver or partner. The person with sepa-

ration anxiety disorder wants to be in the presence of the significant caregiver (s) or partner and will avoid activities that take him/her away from them. He/she will also opt to go out with the person to avoid being alone.

I have seen this type of anxiety more frequently in older children and adults since the earthquakes and in these cases it was in response to the worry that parents or partners might be killed if the person was not in their presence. I have also seen this type of problem in romantic relationships which can end up causing significant problems.

Health-related anxiety involves significant worry about have a medical condition in the absence of any evidence of a medical condition. People with this type of anxiety disorder worry excessively and experience physiological anxiety symptoms which can make them worry more about health problems.

Often this results in checking behaviour. Checking behaviour contributes to this problem and involves internet searching, going to multiple medical professionals for different opinions and it might also involve physical checking such as frequent checking, pinching and obsessing about possible symptoms. This causes significant distress and dysfunction.

If any of these anxiety related problems sound familiar and are causing you distress or impairment in functioning then you may need to get some professional help.

Knowing which type of anxiety disorder you have is important because different disorders dictate different treatment approaches.

Psychological therapies are particularly effective in treating anxiety disorders and can give you life-long

strategies to manage your own symptoms.

Some people find medication treatments useful in managing their anxiety symptoms and for problems like OCD (which I will discuss next time), medication can make a significant difference.

Often people need more than medication to treat their anxiety problems and understanding the nature of the disorder and the types of behaviour you may be engaging in that is maintaining the problem or making it worse can be empowering and can transform an anxiety disorder into more normalised levels of anxiety.

It is unrealistic to expect to eliminate anxiety completely but it can be managed and impairment can be reduced. For people interested in reading more about the different anxiety disorders and treatment approaches, I recommend the website www.psychologytools.com and the Australian Centre for Clinical Intervention workbooks www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/ resources/consumers.cfm as a starting point.

SAUSAGE AND BEAN STEW 15ml vegetable oil 15gm butter 450gm pork sausages 1 large onion, sliced 2 - 397gm red kidney beans, drained 227gm can tomatoes 30ml tomato puree 350ml dry cider Salt and pepper Heat oil and butter in a large saucepan, fry sausages for about 5 minutes, until browned. Cut each sausage in half crossways and remove from the pan. Add onions, fry until golden brown, drain off any excess fat. Return the sausages to the pan together with the beans, tomatoes and their juice, tomato puree, cider, slat and pepper, to taste. Cover and cook gently for about 15 minutes or unitl sausages are tender.

Accompany with crusty bread, boiled rice or mashed potatoes.

Serves 4.

How much firewood do you have left in the shed? We are almost at the end of the second month of winter and our supply is just about out. Possibly it doesn’t help that my office is only a few feet from my lounge which makes it very easy to keep the home fires burning, and

the wood pile shrinking. It also makes it less desirable to venture outdoors but I’ve fixed that problem. Daphne from the Leeston Market is going to knit me a winter hat so I’ll be good to go.

This week we can introduce you to a new stall holder, Sonia, and her daughter Zoe

(pictured). Together they provide us with the most delicious hot soup, just what we need on a chilly winter Market Saturday. Now I can whip up a pretty decent brew of soup but Sonia’s vegetable soup was just divine and I really encourage you to pop in for a cup while you are out and about. I don’t think I’ll be making soup for a while, not while Sonia is in the kitchen that is for sure.

School is back now but it’ll only be another eight weeks or so and the holidays will be on again.

(Sorry parents, I know you didn’t need reminding).

Put October 4th in your calendars to join the Leeston ‘Birthday Box’ Market. This will be an opportunity for the kids, or anyone, to come along with their ‘Box’ to sell out of …… anything. Keep an eye on the Echo Updates for more information as we get closer. October is the Leeston Market’s birthday so there will also be a competition for the best ‘Birthday present Box’ Coming up to November will be our ‘International Post’ Markets. Think of friends and family overseas and visit the Leeston Market for your gifts.

We’ll have International Post in mind so will have things that are flat and light, easy and inexpensive to send away. The rest of the year will fly so start thinking now.

At the Leeston Market we now have limited ‘powered’ sites on application, so call us if you need power for your stall and we’ll see what we can do for you. In addition, during the winter months we ask that all stall holders bring along tarps big enough to cover their floor area to help protect the lawn from turning into mud pies. Roll on Spring and Summer please.

When used on the sides of hedges the small particles fall straight down in a tidy row at the base of the hedge row which can be left to decompose naturally or can be easily flicked under the hedge with a rake or a pitch fork. For avid gardeners these small particles can be added to compost heaps or spread throughout the garden as mulch.

LABRADOR RETRIEVERS THE MOST POPULAR DOG BREED The Labrador retriever was once again the most popular dog breed in the country with over 41 thousand registered in the 2013/14 registration year.

On the top five list are the Huntaway (31,385); Border collie (23,190); and Jack Russell Terrier (18,658). The New Zealand Heading, also known as the New Zealand eye dog for the way it uses its eyes and quick movements to control sheep, made

the fifth spot with just over 17,000 registrations, edging out the Fox Terrier.

The information from the National Dog Database was released this week by the Department of Internal Affairs. The Database collates the dog registration information received from territorial authorities throughout New Zealand. As required under the Dog Control Act 1996, all dogs over 3 months

old have to be registered with their local council every year by 1 July.

Internal Affairs Deputy Chief Executive Paul James said that a statistical snapshot of the database is taken as at31 May and is made publicly available online.

“The information on the localcouncils.govt.nz website is provided in an accessible and user friendly format and is aimed at making it easier for the public to access and reuse the Department’s information on local government”, he said.

Mr James said that new data releases and refreshed content is regularly added to the site to keep the website relevant, functional and attractive to visitors.

The localcouncils.govt.nz website profiles the country’s 78 regional and territorial councils and includes information about population, election statistics, dog control statistics and council finances.

In 2013/2014 there were just over half a million dogs registered with councils. Every council must keep a record of all dogs registered and provide information on the dog and its owner along with its microchip number (if it has one) to the National Dog Database. The statistical data available on local councils does not include any personal identifying information about owners.

This year’s data also shows that 57% (304,309) of registered dogs have been micro-chipped.

RUNWAY BRIDES For those that remember last years successful ‘Fashion through the Decades’ Vintage Treasures, will be interested to know that Deborah Gill-Smith is about to launch another stunning fashion show.

This one is to be held at the La Vida Centre, Christchurch on the 15th August, 2014 and will display bridal gowns, some dating from 1910.

Deborah is using this event to fund raiser for the women in Laos and the Hagar group, “Women supporting women”.

On display will be her Grandma Gill’s (Maud, nee McLachlan) wedding dress complete with veil, head piece, shoes and silk stocking from 1923 (seen in the photo below). Also included is Maud’s sister’s (Margaretta known as Greta Lochhead) dress from 1910.

Another local bridal dress that will be on display comes from the wedding in August 1940 of Freda Greenwood to

Robert McLaughlan and plus their bridemaid’s dress worn by Emily Greenwood.

This dress has a special heritage because it was worn by Freda’s daughter Marian in her own wedding to Ron Dixon in November 1964. Both these weddings took place at St James’ church, Southbridge.

The display has over 50 wedding dresses and over 25 attendants outfits from 1910 to modern day.

HAMMER HARDWARE SATISFIES Roy Morgan Research revealed the winners of its 3rd annual Customer Satisfaction Awards for Retail at a gala dinner in Auckland at the end of February.

Throughout 2013, Roy Morgan surveyed 12,000+ consumers across New Zealand. The winners of Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards are those that managed to build and maintain a customer focus in a tough marketplace and outdo their industry competitors.

The 2013 Hardware Store of the Year was Hammer Hardware, which had a great second half to its calendar year. As the incumbent, ITM won the first 5 months of 2013, but the tide soon turned and Hammer Hardware took out the remaining 7 months to become the third consecutive new victor.

As a category, Hardware Retailing comes in at

number five in Roy Morgan’s 2013 customer satisfaction ratings, with a score of 88.8%, only half a percent behind 4th placed Sports Stores but many points ahead of Home Phone Providers and Financial Institutions which bring up the rear in this year’s retail rankings.
