CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITY’S HERITAGE The migrants arrived with horses and ploughs, Axes and saws, pigs, sheep and cows, They drained the vast swamplands and sowed it in grass, There was meat, wool and butter, the progress was fast. There were butchers and bakers and candlestick makers, Doctors, and lawyers, and men of the cloth. Smithys and saddlers, dress and hat makers, Thirsty old boozers, who had blown too much froth. There were grocers and drapers, and boot and shoe makers, Those who transgressed, felt the force of the law. There were rail days and sale days, with rovers and drovers, Leeston was thriving in no time at all. By Colin Patterson
Not only did the pioneers bring their trades and skills, and a desire to better their lot, but also their love of
music, dance, poetry, song and humour. It wasn’t long before there were brass bands,

SELWYN HERITAGE FUNDING AVAILABLE Groups and individuals interested in preserving Selwyn’s heritage are being encouraged to apply for funding for their next project as Selwyn Heritage funding applications are now open. Selwyn District Council has funding available to meet some of the extra costs associated with protecting heritage buildings and trees for the community’s benefit. This may include restoring, reinforcing and protecting heritage buildings, and other structures such as war memorials, sites and trees. Grants given in previous years have ranged between $250 and $17,000 for projects such as pruning old oak trees, restoring weather boards and earthquake repairs to buildings and other structures following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The Ellesmere Band Hall is a listed heritage item in the Selwyn District Plan and received a grant of $3,000 to replace weatherboards and repaint the exterior of the hall last year. Band secretary Alison Donley says the hall was in desperate need of restoring. “We were grateful for the grant from the council to repair the hall as it is enjoyed by the whole community and adds to the heritage of Selwyn. It was great to see it in tip-top condition for the Anzac Day commemorations this year.” Averil Carpenter from the Old Vicarage in Prebbleton received $1000 to replace an aluminium window frame with a wooden frame two years ago. “The previous owners had put in a box bay aluminium window, but it didn’t match the style of the 150 year-old home,” says Mrs Carpenter. “When Councillor Malcolm Lyall told me about the Selwyn Heritage fund I was delighted that a grant could
cover part of the cost of replacing the window to maintain the heritage of the building,” she adds. There is one Selwyn Heritage funding round each year and $35,000 is available to support projects by owners of heritage buildings or protected trees in the Selwyn District. Priority is given to items listed in the Selwyn District Plan. The heritage fund can be used to pay for part of the cost of restoration or protection work, and applicants will also need to fund some of this cost from other sources. Applications for this round close on Friday 11th July 2014. Applicants need to include at least two quotes from suitably qualified tradespeople. Funding may be given to activities such as restoring chimney posts, replacing plaster, repairing windows, water
blasting buildings, tree trimming or pruning, roof repairs, organ repairs and enhancement to heritage features. Funding cannot be used for routine maintenance, or for improvements which are of personal or commercial benefit such as new kitchens or bathrooms.
Application forms are available from all Council service centres and libraries, and from the Council Website www.selwyn.govt.nz/ heritagefund. For more information, contact Jessica Tuilaepa on 347 2974 or emailheritagefund@selwyn.govt.nz.

DUNSANDEL FIRE BRIGADE NEWS For the second year the Dunsandel Fire Brigade stair climbing team headed to Auckland for the annual Fire Fighter Sky Tower Challenge which raises funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer N.Z. (LBC). As it was the 10th anniversary climb for LBC it was a privilege to take part in the event. To make the climb even more meaningful we were privileged to be able to dedicate our climb to David Clay. David was a past pupil of Dunsandel School who sadly lost his battle with leukaemia last year. The team were honoured to carry a photo of David on each of our Breathing Aparatus sets during our climb up all 1103 steps of the Sky Tower. This year Daniel Gregg, Shane Wylie, Mark Lowry and Cheryl Wilson were joined by Matt Boon and
David Stock. The two new team members exceeded their expectations for the climb. The 4 fire fighters who did the climb last year all bettered their times. Thanks to the incredible support of the local community we raised the sum of $5759! The team would like to give a huge thanks to Synlait for allowing us to train on their external stairwell and for supporting us financially. Thank you to Nigel and Nicola Barnett for donating trees for us to sell for firewood and Roger Collins for allowing us to use his woodsplitter. Without everyone’s support we could not have reached our fundraising total. The total sum raised by the 700 fire fighters who took part in the climb was a massive $882,386 to this very worthy cause.

Trinity Church, Dunsandel held its first CAFÉ CHURCH service on May 18th. The attractive, cosy foyer was set out as a cafe. Food, tea and coffee were available (free of charge) throughout the service. Three people from the Cafe Hope Church at Sheffield kindly came to demonstrate what a CAFÉ CHURCH is all about. Sharron Perry led the time together with a creative presentation based on our five senses. Jane Patterson and Wilma Webster spoke afterwards on Sheffield’s experience with this church format. Around 35 people attended and all thoroughly enjoyed this very informal and relaxed style of church. Trinity intend having CAFÉ CHURCH on the 3rd Sunday of every month till at least the end of Spring. A decision
will then be made as to whether to continue. It’s different, much less structured than a normal church service, and it’s hoped that members of the public who do not normally enjoy attending church may find this style to their liking. Trinity members are very grateful to the Cafe Hope, Sheffield, for helping us initiate this community outreach. Next CAFÉ CHURCH – Sunday 15 June, 11.00am Trinity Community Church, 45 Hororata-Dunsandel Road – only a few metres west from the Dunsandel Store on the Main South Rd. SOUTHBRIDGE GARDEN CLUB The May meeting of the Southbridge Garden Club was enough to turn most members green. This had nothing to do with gardening practices but a lot to do with envy. Formalities were dealt with quickly with arrangements being made for the AGM in June and this was followed by travelling tales related, first by Janice McCartin and then by Judith McDrury and Joyce Greenwood. Janice had visited Singapore in July to attend an Orchid Show but also found time to take a harbour cruise, view the city from the Singapore Flyer (the giant ferris wheel) and wander through the National Orchid Garden to see even more orchids. Her camera worked overtime during this jaunt and the photos were all passed around for viewing while Janice answered copious questions and compared notes with other members who had been to Singapore in the past. Judith and Joyce had also stopped over in Singapore but continued on to explore Britain from top to bottom with an interlude in France to complete their four week sojourn. Judith talked from
the lectern while Joyce kept up the slide show and members revelled in garden scenes from Castle Howard, Alnwick and Warwick Castles, Hidcote, Sissinghurst, Hampton Court, Monet’s garden at Giverney and Versailles. All those were places that any dedicated gardener would wish to visit as well as places like Edinburgh, Bath, the Cotswolds and Lakes District, London and Paris. Merle Crean and Barbara Gilbert did a fine job of judging the crowded show benches and the variety of entries was a little perplexing. There were chrysanthemums and feijoas which are about normal for this time of year, beautiful roses (a little late but not unheard of), but also a single snowdrop that must have thought spring had arrived early. Margaret Thomson showed some lovely fuchsias which should have succumbed to frost by this time of year and Jan Fraser even managed to find a magnificent tomato still growing. The 64th AGM will be held on 9th June and takes the form of a finger-food lunch beginning at 11.30am instead of the usual 1.30pm start. Members are asked to bring a plate to share, Rosaline Brown will be sharing her - Lawn Mowing - Lawn Fertilising knowledge of - Gardening - Bark/Straw Mulching Southbridge histo-Section Tidying - Shrub Pruning ry and the floral (Rose pruning in season) art title is ‘Berry Phone James - 324 2780 Satisfaction Guaranteed Nice’.

We have our own space, which is set up just for the children to play, as well as access to a large open space in the gym, for more active play. We cater for children from five years to 13, from 7-9am and 3-6pm, with a walking bus to and from school. Funding is available for before and after school care for those who are eligible to receive assistance from WINZ. If parents wish to attend the Carbon Gym facilities or Embellish Beauty Therapy rooms, they can also book their children into BASE CAMP, while they have some well earned 'ME' time. This can also work for Mums, Dads and caregivers that have preschoolers, as we run a crèche for these two businesses during school hours. Please discuss this option with Ella if you are interested and contact us for further details, as bookings are essential. On a Tuesday morning we also hold a community playgroup, from 9:30 till 12pm. For a gold coin donation, pre-schoolers can come along with their parents or caregivers and enjoy a social morning with other children. The 'big kid' in us, can join in or simply enjoy a cuppa and some much needed adult conversation! We hope this will be a great avenue for new and established families to meet and greet and create an overall fun base for our community’s families. For further information about these services, please contact Kim on 3242411 or 0276221449.
We look forward to seeing you there :)

As I write this update, the South Island is basking in sunshine and it’s due to stay that way for several days. Early mornings have the countryside glistening with frost, and with it the promise of a beautiful day. This morning, in spite of the big minus sign in front of the temperature, I donned my Market goodies, a beautiful woollen scarf from Rose, and a brooch from Margaret to clip it together, and ventured into the city with Dudley, another Rose creation, on my motorbike….. just because I could! in someone’s kitchen or on the other side of the world. There is something for everyone and it could end up anywhere. With the changing seasons, so are the goodies on offer at the Leeston Market. Janice and Shirley will have winter vegetables, Daphne is knitting gorgeous winter hats and any time is jewellery season. We have our casual stall holders that come with crafts and plants, as and when they are available. Siouxzart is taking a break in June due to family commitments and Jill wont be back until October with her concrete mushrooms as her stocks are low and she needs
more time to create. W e are still keen for a stall holder with hot food so if you want to come along with hot soup, sausage sizzle or something else, we have space over the upcoming months for more stall holders, or if you are fundraising, please contact us. In the last Echo update for the Leeston Market we challenged business and families to commit to the St John Supporter Scheme. How many of you took up the challenge? This Marketeer has asked my boss to make a donation direct from my wages each pay. This in turn got her thinking that it would be good for our business as well so it doesn’t take much to give back, and it can have a domino effect. TEEN COACH WORKSHOP A workshop for Selwyn residents that are coaching a young person to drive is being held on 10 June in Lincoln. Teen Coach, facilitated by James Morrison of Aotearoa Driving Academy, is a 90 minute workshop for adults who are teaching a young driver. The workshop will give parents and caregivers practical tips on how to safely coach young drivers, refresh their knowledge of the Road Code and find out how driving instructors teach key skills. The workshops are also a chance for parents to talk to other adults teaching their children to drive and learn from their experience. “Teen Coach workshops have been held in Selwyn over the past two years and have been well attended and very successful,” says Ngaire Tinning, Road Safety Coordi-
nator at Selwyn District Council. “The workshop is open to any adult living in Selwyn who is currently teaching a young person to drive who is currently on either a learner or restricted licence. The invitation to attend is also extended to people who will have children learning to drive in the near future.” Mr Morrison says that Teen Coach provides driving coaches with a better understanding of the new licensing system and the requirements of the restricted driving test. “The driving environment today is very different from what it was like thirty years ago when most parents learnt to drive. There is more traffic, vehicles can travel faster and young people also face pressure from friends, the media or other areas,” he says. “People coaching young drivers need to know the

importance of role modelling good road safety. This includes thinking about whether they could drive more safely themselves which in turn will have a flow on effect helping bring New Zealand’s road toll down,” he adds. The Teen Coach workshop will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, 10 June at Lincoln High School. This workshop is subsidised by the New Zealand Transport Agency and Selwyn District Council which enables it to be offered for $10 per adult. Young drivers can accompany a registered parent or caregiver for free. Places are limited, so early registration is encouraged. To register, or for further information, contact Ngaire Tinning on 347 2901 or email ngaire.tinning@selwyn. govt.nz.

HAIRCRAFT HAIR DESIGN Kerri Cameron purchased Haircraft Hair Design in January 2013. In the 17 months since it has had an extensive upgrade. Although we still have a lot to do yet Haircraft has made an amazing transformation. The decor now consists of two red walls to enhance the awesome work space. The team at Haircraft has changed as well, losing Margaret to retirement. Leanne Badger has come on to take her place. Leanne has 35 years experience in the hairdressing industry, and is an amazing stylist with time and experience on her side. Undertaking 30 hours per week at Haircraft she will be available to cater to all our clients needs, whether it be a permanent wave or colours, cuts or your precious child’s haircut. Leanne is experienced in all aspects of the hairdressing trade. We are also losing Kylie for a few months to prepare for the arrival of her precious bundle of joy. However Kylie is hoping to return after a period of 3 months
on maternity leave , so never fear as she will return. Kerri is still available for all her past and future clients and is looking forward to the upcoming years as the salon and the Haircraft team grows with our ever growing community. Drive past Haircraft at night and you will see a warm and inviting glow from our new entrance way which is enticing in itself. We are all enjoying the new workspace that the renovation has created and look forward for past and future clients who we know will enjoy the space as well. To celebrate we have some exciting things happening in salon: All colour clients go into the draw to win one of three prizes, consisting of haircare products, lip glosses and nail polishes. We will be running a rebooking draw also, so anyone who rebooks will go in the draw to win some awesome vouchers.

LEGAL FORMALITIES AFTER DEATH The death of a relative or loved one is an emotional time involving contact with professionals who we are not always in contact with. The initial contact would usually be the funeral director who attends to certain legal formalities. They see to medical, death and cremation certificates and registration of the death with the Department of Internal Affairs. In the weeks following the funeral, it is usual to commence the administration of the deceased’s estate. The person or persons appointed as executors under the deceased’s will are responsible for obtaining a grant of probate of the will. If the deceased did not leave a will, one of the next of kin would apply for Letters of Administration. Application for either Probate or Letters of Administration is made to the High Court. On the issue of the Probate or Letters of Administration document, administration of the estate commences. It includes getting details of
all assets and liabilities of the estate, protecting the assets and selling them as appropriate. Accounts due and any taxes owing should also be paid in the course of administration. A will may be challenged on a number of grounds. Sometimes a testator may not have mental capacity to make a valid will. The more common ground is where someone has received inadequate provision or no provision in the will. Those claims arise in a number of ways: often a family member who is not happy about their inheritance, or someone else who has assisted the deceased on the basis of
a promise that they would be included in the will. The Property (Relationships) Act has also introduced rights for a spouse who has not been adequately provided for in the will. In most cases claimants have 12 months from the grant of Probate to file proceedings and if the estate has been distributed the executors or administrators may be personally liable if the estate has been distributed and a claimant is successful in bringing proceedings. Distribution of an estate usually occurs when the administration has been completed. However it is unlikely to be

within 6 months of the grant of Probate as personal liability would fall on the executors should a debt arise during that time. If the executors become aware of other claims it would be usual for them to postpone distribution until the claims have been made or the time for making a claim has past. Distribution, where the deceased left a will, will be in accordance with the directions in the will. Where the deceased did not leave a will, the estate will be distributed amongst close relatives according to the fixed rules in the Administration Act. It is therefore recommended that everybody leaves a valid will to avoid having their estate going to folk who they may not wish to provide for.

RESIDENTS’ SURVEY UNDERWAY Selwyn residents are being asked to share their views on the delivery of Council’s services as part of the 2014 Resident’s Survey. Each year the Council carries out a residents’ telephone survey which asks people to comment on what they think of the quality of Council services like parks, roads, rubbish and recycling collection and libraries. The survey also asks residents what they think the Council’s spending priorities should be. This year’s survey also includes questions on the Council’s Smoke Free Policy and on pokie machine gambling. The survey seeks responses from around 1,000 randomly chosen residents by telephone. The telephone
survey is designed to be representative of the demographics of Selwyn District, and is carried out by independent research company Research First. The telephone survey is being carried out until Monday 9 June. “This year people who are contacted by telephone and asked to take part in the survey will also have the option to complete the survey online,” says Melissa Renganathan, the Council’s Research and Policy Advisor. “The survey provides the Council with valuable information we can use to evaluate our performance and identify what we are doing well and what we can improve.”
“We are also inviting other Selwyn residents to complete the survey online as we value their comments on the Council’s performance,” she adds. To complete the online survey visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/ haveyoursay by Monday 9 June.

SOUTHBRIDGE SENIOR TEAM VS THE TACTIX!!! Keen netballers were put through their paces at the ANZ Netball Roadshow, held at Selwyn Netball Centre on Saturday [17 May]. As part of the event, Southbridge Senior C won the chance to warm up with Tactix players Zoe Walker, Nicola Mackle, Hayley Saunders and Sophia Fenwick. The team of girls aged 13 to 15 were split into shooting, attack and defence to practise the skills required in their positions. Team captain Catherine McLean, 14, says every player learned something from the experience. "We learned lots of new drills that we can do during practices to improve our playing. It meant a lot to us to meet the Tactix and learn from them. It was a once in a life time opportunity to work with professional
players." The team were thrilled when the Tactix players came to watch the start of their game and cheer them on, she says. "It wasn't our best game but we definitely were playing better when the Tactix were watching us. It was quite exciting because they were really positive, cheering us on from the sideline." As part of the ANZ Netball Roadshow, netballers were encouraged to test their skills in a series of challenges and have their photo taken with the Tactix players. Competing teams received Player of the Day packs, which were awarded by coaches, and referees also received prize packs.

AIMTRU ARCHERS - AIM FOR A CURE Sunday the 27th of April saw two of our young archers from Ellesmere Archery Club take part in Aimtru Archers "Aim for a Cure" 1000 arrow challenge. This fantastic event was organised to raise money for cancer research as well as show support for some of Aimtru's extended 'archery family' who are affected by this disease. Shooting started just after 8:30 in the morning
and finished as the sun set with a double rainbow shining over archers and supporters alike. Congratulations to Chrisma Roberts and Gareth Kirton for completing your 500 arrow challenge, your determination and perseverance was admirable. LEESTON RUGBY CLUB - CLUB DAY - 10TH MAY 2014 On behalf of the Leeston Rugby Club I would like to thank everyone that help made our Club Day a great success. Special thanks to all the Club Committee members and parents as well as to all our club sponsors for their support in the Club. Without them the Club would not be like it is and we have a great new lot of sponsors on board this seaso. Thank you very much. On our Cub Day we honoured 4 new life members of the club.
was the chairman in 1984. He also helped build the club building. Dick’s 2 boys both played at the club as well and some of his grandchildren.
They are:
Rob Dew Joined the club in 1996 from the West Coast. Coached the Seniors from 1997-2000 Coached the un17s 20032004 President of Leeston 19992000 Ellesmere Sub Union Delegate 1997-2010 Ellesmere Board Member 2006-2011
Dick Taiaroa, Dick started playing rugby in 1948 through to 1981, He started coaching in the 1970s and coached the 10s 12s 14s through those years; he coached the un18s in 1972 and coached the seniors as well. Dick was on the Club Committee from 1977-1986 and
Ray Henderson, Ray played all his rugby up to 1971, Was the social convener of the rugby club for many years Took up rugby refereeing in 1971 with the advice of Merv Rathgen and is still involved in the refereering circles and is a life member of the CRRA.
Still on the current Committee and Bar Manager of the club. Peter Baylis Peter started playing in 1950s and finished in 1984, Coached Club sides in the 1980s and 1990s, Became President of the Club from 2002-2004 Was on the Committee on and off for more then 15 years, Has been a major sponsor of the club for last few years. On behalf of the club I would like to thank these men for their hard work over the years and they have been recognized with life membership of the Leeston rugby club. Trev Kennett President of LRFC.
Leeston Rugby Club Day was a huge success with great weather. It was great to have all the teams at home on a lovely sunny day. The morning started with an early start with all three ripper teams playing at home. Two ripper teams played one another and there was a great comradeship amongst the younger players with the older players, it was great to see. Part of Leeston Club Day was about bringing the community together with the Rugby Club and as quoted by Trevor Kennett the President of the Club this is what the Committee is trying to achieve this year and ensuring that we are putting players on the paddock as well. It was great to have the support from Parents/ Caregivers and supporters of the Club for this day. The Club had three ripper
teams, two 8.5s, 10s, 11.5s, combined 13s side, combined 14.5s and the Division 2 Team all playing at home. With only having JAB teams in the past it was a great end to the day to have the Division 2 Team playing Selwyn that day. With a hard fought battle the Leeston Division Two Team won but not without some casualties. The Club wishes Richard Mavor all the best in his recovery. The younger players watched with enthusiasm and ran up and down and it was great to see them hoping to one day be one of those Senior Players taking the field for the Leeston Rugby Club. A Spit Roast catered for everyone following the Senior Speeches and this went down well with everyone and it finished a great day off.
