LEESTON CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL HAS DONE IT AGAIN!! Being an ‘Enviro School’ their aim is to create engaging and exciting outside spaces. With eleven talented year 5 and 6 artists, this job was made easy when they completed eight outside murals for the school. The eleven students in the Art GATE programme (Gifted and Talented Education) were chosen for their creativity, artistic confidence and their ability to manage themselves in a group and individually. The children have modelled their work on cubism. This was inspired by their term 2 Visual Art unit on Picasso. Local artist, Kate Hellyar gave up her time to also work on the murals with the children. Leeston School would like to thank the supportive

team at Leeston ITM for supplying the boards and paint for the murals. The Art students are: Margarida Dias, Iris Heal, Harrison Tacbaya, Will Dudley, Amber Lemon, Phoebe Hellyar, Mikayla Geerts, Louis Nurse, Jay Dreaver, Isabella Gilbert, Emma Johnson. Art Co-ordinator – Nicky Johanson

SOME CALL IT BLUE GOLD Others say it’s the life blood of everything, some only think of it when they are brushing their teeth… What is it you ask? It’s Water, H₂O. Many people don’t realise how precious Canterbury’s water is, but a group of 18 senior high school students (pictured below) from all over New Zealand found out last week.

Anna Wright and Olivia Johnson, both in Year 11 and members of Te Waihora Warriors represented Ellesmere College on a weeklong trip sponsored by the Untouched World Charitable Trust and Environment Canterbury. The group was based at Ngati Moki Marae at Taumutu on the edge of Te Waihora, Lake Ellesmere. They learned about the various ways water can be used as a resource and the different perspectives that people hold. The students undertook a variety of different activities within the Waihora/Selwyn catchment ranging from looking at mayflies and algae at Coes Ford with a local ecologist, to removing Willow seedlings with DOC around Lake Ellesmere. They also heard from guest speakers such as

University Lecturers, local Dairy farmers in the Ellesmere area, Waihora Ellesmere Trust (WET), Ngai Tahu, Environment Canterbury, Central Plains Water, Forest and Bird and Department of Conservation to name a few. At the culmination of the experience, Olivia and Anna had the challenge of giving a presentation on the issue

of water use in Canterbury to guests involved in water management. They presented this in small groups in a variety of different ways. Both students feel it is important that more people need to know about reducing water pollution from farm run-off and how this can be done by planting along water ways, as well as effects of water pollution on our wildlife in the Selwyn and Lake Ellesmere. They are now looking forward to their next opportunity to make a difference to the local environment. Te Waihora Warriors’ next project tree planting day down at the Lake is coming soon… watch this space if your keen to help out!

LEESTON MARKET UPDATE

SUNNY DAYS AT LEESTON PLAYCENTRE

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads in Ellesmere. We Hope you have a great weekend. Next weekend at the Leeston Market you may notice that we are starting to expand with our regular summer stalls that are beginning to return and a few brand new ones to. Chris Young is one of our newest stalls and will fill the spot of a regular second hand stall. Chris is a local man and has a current 2nd hand dealers license so you know what you are getting is legitimate. Although we are starting to fill up quickly we still have spots for new stall holders who are keen to join our farmers and craft market. Please contact the Leeston Market Committee Secretary, Shirley Fisher on shirleydjfisher@msn.com for a stall application form and more information. I have really enjoyed writing the Leeston Market Update for the past year but I am heading up a new project to set up a community house in Leeston and

Now that the days are warming up there are more opportunities for outside play at Leeston Play Centre. This means more slime, water, painting on a larger scale and building with real materials in the workshop area. Summer is a great time to join Play Centre as you get to experience all the facilities and activities that are unavailable in the wet and cold months. I like that my oldest can play on the playground while my youngest can hang out on the grass and not come in freezing. Play centre works for each family differently and you’ll find your own place and of course your child’s favourite areas of play to. We have space now for under and over two’s on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.15 – 12. And spaces for under twos at babies can play on Tuesday afternoons from 12.30 – 3pm. Please feel free to drop in during these times for a free visit to see if play centre is for you and talk to our lovely co-ordinators about the next step. You don’t have to book; we love it when new families drop in for a look.

so am reducing some of my other community commitments, which mean I will be passing the update onto fellow stall holder Brenda Franz of Siouxzart. But you can still find me on market day with my stall of cake pops, cupcakes, mini pav’s, specialty cakes and more decadent treats. Pop in and see what on offer or put your order in so it’s ready to pick up. Contact me on ab.nurse@hotmail.co.nz for more info or to place an order. I will also still be involved regularly in the market setting up and helping out with the calf club activity and helping the students with the Churros which have quickly become a market favourite and are available at every market from 10am-lunch. Next week for our Calf Club activity we will be making bird feeders for $1 per child. See you at the Leeston Market next weekend, Saturday the 7th of September. And thank you Anna Nurse

Below are Churros, a light and fluffy doughnut best eaten fresh and traditionally served for breakfast. Get yours from the Leeston Market.

VINTAGE TREASURES: FASHION SHOW Fashion is a simple and flippantly used term generally referring to the clothing we like to wear, however fashion is so much more. Fashion is one of the strongest cultural markers of civilisation, it is the confluence of social norms, personal expression and available income that tells the story of each garment. It is also influenced by ethnic factors, climate, age, vocation, recreation, personal beliefs and of course good old commerce. The most striking thing is that fashion changes considerably over time and to look back on fashion tends is to open a time capsule full of memories of the way we were and how far we have come, or slipped in some cases. It is for no reason the Great Grandma is wearing a large white gown in an old family photo or Mum is wearing a paisley ‘Mod’ dress whereas less thought probably went into Dads awful tan stubbies and roman sandals. The point is that there is a story and a memory behind almost every garment. We are proud to announce the up and coming 2013 ‘Vintage Treasures’ fashion show Saturday 14th September, 7pm at Ellesmere College. A tremendous amount of planning has gone into obtaining a multitude of gar-

ments from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s to be worn by local models including 4 male models and 1 guest appearance by a teacher, as they strut with you down memory lane. Come along for the spectacle by all means but don’t just be an observer, feel free to dive into the darkest reaches of your closet and find your own retro attire to be eligible for any number of best dressed prizes on offer. Tickets at $25 can be purchased from Hammer Hardware, High Street Hair, Haircraft Hair Design formally (Estella Hair Design) or call Kathryn 324 3497. Proceeds from the tickets go to the World Challenge fund, giving a group of Ellesmere College students an overseas experience. Retro supper is included. This event is not just for the women, be brave guys and come too!! Seats are limited, so don’t delay.

DAFFODIL DAY IN ELLESMERE GROWING DEMAND FOR SERVICES. As the buds open on another Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society is encountering a growing need for services for people who are living and coping with cancer. Support services for patients in the Ellesmere district have been in high demand these 12 months. Since Daffodil Day last year, the Society’s Canterbury-West Coast Division has spent $80,000 transporting pateints to and from cancer treatment. Our Daffodil shuttle ferried 16,539 passengers to the Christchurch Hospital Oncology Service, while volunteer drivers generously provided 3774 drives for Christchurch patients needing a ride to treatment. Of these, 148 drives were provided for patients living in the Ellesmere district. The Ellesmere cancer support group has also provided practical support to patients and their families, including visiting, meals and baking and linking up to essential needs such as firewood. Staff and volunteers are currently supporting 1102 people across CanterburyWest Coast regions, with 1006 new referrals received this year. Welfare grants of $101,000 have helped provide welfare assistance for people coping with cancer. 629 people attended our facilitated group programmes. Our accommodation service has provided beds for 889 out-of-town patients - a total of 7000 bed nights over the year. In addition to Daffodil House accommodation costs, we needed to fund another $83,000 in motel costs, because of earthquake property losses. Our Cancer Information nurses responded to 3300 calls on the 0800 CANCER (226 237) information line,

while 8100 information booklets were distributed at no charge. Each year around 21,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed and around 9000 people die from cancer. The most commonly diagnosed is prostate cancer. Colorectal and breast cancer are the next most commonly diagnosed cancers. The leading cause of cancer-related death is lung cancer followed by colorectal cancer. By supporting Daffodil Day on August 30 in the Ellesmere community this year, you can ensure we’ll be there to help people living with a cancer diagnosis and their families when it is most needed. If you, or someone you know, needs our help please encourage them to ring the Cancer Society of New Zealand, Canterbury-West Coast Division on 0800 CANCER (226 237).

LOCAL MP RECYCLES OWN TV TO MARK SCHEME MILESTONE Selwyn MP Amy Adams, who is also Minister for the Environment, has followed her own advice and recycled her old unwanted television, to mark the Government’s TV Takeback Scheme, reaching the milestone of 100,000 televisions recycled so far. Ms Adams recently took her own television for recycling at the RCN e-waste recycling plant at Buchanans Road in Hornby and handed over her five dollar note to RCN’s General Manager, John Thornhill.

Ms Adams said that she was thrilled with the progress of the scheme to date, including in Selwyn, where the target of 2,700 televisions recycled had been reached. “It is great news for the environment that people are really getting behind the scheme,” said Ms Adams. “Old television sets and other electronic waste such as computer monitors cannot be put into landfills because they contain chemicals that can contaminate the environment and cause harm to humans,” said Ms Adams. The Government’s TV TakeBack programme has been rolled out around the country to coincide with the digital switchover in each region. Through the Government subsidy, the cost to the public of recycling a television has been no more than $5.

The initiative will get underway in the lower North Island and the East Cape later this month, and the rest of the North Island, including Auckland, from October. The programme is also aimed at expanding electronic recycling services across New Zealand, raising public awareness and ensuring recyclers have the capacity and capability to deal with increased volumes of ewaste in the future.

SOUTHBRIDGE GARDEN CLUB REPORT The last meeting of the Southbridge Garden Club was all about the Spring Show as is usual for August every year. Catering requirements were finalized, along with stewards, raffle prizes, the floral display, speaker and attendants for the sales table and other money collection areas. Schedules were distributed to all those present and for anyone else wanting to enter the competitions, the schedules should now be available at the Leeston Garden Centre and the Southbridge Butchery. You don’t have to be a member of the Garden Club to enter and there is no fee to enter the Spring Show competitions. Susan Taylor & Deanna Sycamore judged the table competitions at the meeting where the competition steward had managed to do some creative juggling to fit in all the wonderful camellia entries. Let’s hope there are still some blooming for the spring show as there were many remarks about how early the season is. Judith McDrury even found an early branch of pale pink rhododendron to win the ‘Pick of the Garden’ section. Still a few Winter Roses on the bench but obviously starting to form their seed pods and even a collection of mixed miniature daffodils to brighten things up. Heather Craw filled in what remained of the afternoon with a very informative talk about

A crazy idea on a trip to Tekapo has ended up a reality for Beauty & Massage Therapist, Vicki McMillan. Many will know Vicki from her many years in the Leeston Pharmacy and The Pamper Room. After having a break from the industry, Vicki decided to start up her own Therapy clinic from home and had the idea to convert a retro caravan into a Beauty Room. She found the perfect wee van in February this year and started work on getting the interior renovated. With much help from her friends and family, “Betsy” as Vicki calls the caravan, was finished and ready for business in April. Vintage Beauty offers a basic range of Beauty treatments, concentrating mainly on waxing and tinting, but also offers Makeup lessons, Make-overs and Massage Therapy. Face Painting is also one of Vicki’s new skills. Her and friend Lisa Southward have been lucky enough to receive training from Nicole Heydenrijk, from Body FX. As seen at the Leeston Fete, the girls designs are very popular and they are available for functions or kids parties etc … One of the great things about the caravan is obviously its mobility, and Vicki does do mobile treatments for a minimum charge, making it great for hens parties, birthdays or special occasions. The clinic has no set opening hours, and is by appointment only. However days, evenings and weekends are available. To make an appointment with Vicki, phone or text 027245176 or check out her facebook page www.facebook.com/ VintageBeautyNZ

Members learned about some of the more unusual culinary herbs and some oddball remedies for afflictions such as baldness and were able to purchase plants from the small selection brought by Heather. Two ladies were also lucky enough to receive lavender wands fashioned by Heather as they were having birthdays in August. The next actual meeting of the club will be on 14th October and the day will have a ‘getting ready for Christmas’ look about it. Cheryl Hall will demonstrate some quick cooking ideas, Rozanne Burnby will have hints about gift-wrapping and the

floral art theme is ‘Spirit of Christmas’. This will be the last meeting in the Church Hall before the summer season of trips and treats. In between times, don’t forget the Spring Show in the Southbridge Town Hall on Tuesday, 10th September. Entries can be staged between 9am and 10.30am on the day and the show will be open to the public from 1pm to 4pm. ON THE TRAIL WITH OLIVE WEBB Another busy month that gained momentum as the month progressed. My little Toyota Vitz is now doing more than 250o0 km a week! Several more fireside meetings made it possible to talk to many more people and to listen to the concerns they have about the incumbent mayor and Council. I have attended Resident’s Association meetings in TaiTapu, Dunsandel and Rolleston. I have spoken to groups in Rolleston, Lincoln and Arthur’s Pass. I have met with people from Selwyn Huts, Taumutu, Halswell, Leeston, West Melton Darfield and Kirwee. It is quite remarkable how consistent the message is: ‘Council seems to have forgotten us. Little things that used to happen that made our places appear tidy and loved seem to have fallen off Council’s ‘to do’ lists. It takes so long to get things done. Things when they do get done seem to get done the most expensive way possible’ We must close this gap between us and the Mayor and Council Water continues to be central in discussions wherever I have been: too much, too dirty or poorly managed. Doubling of the water rates in Rolleston without prior warning has more than irritated some. We need systematic affordable strategies to keep our water well managed and clean.

And of course there is the perennial issue of the quality of the roads. I was told on one occasion that because the road maintenance was contracted out, that Council could not be held responsible for the roads. This of course is not the way contracts work. Whatever the processes, we have a responsibility for keeping our roads safe for us all and for all our visitors. We are not doing this now. We must develop a program for the systematic and ongoing repair and maintenance of our roads. New, straight forward applications for Building Consents seem to be getting processed reasonably quickly – but when there are queries it seems the machine then grinds to very, very slow. There seem to be variable strategies for Codes of Compliance and many people report frustrations with this. It must be easier for people in Selwyn to build their dreams and live their lives in our piece of Paradise. Don’t forget to vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eSCRV When the Canterbury earthquakes hit it saw many GP practices closed and hard -copy records inaccessible. So a system has now been put in place called Shared Care View. Shared Care View is a secure data repository for electronic patient information. It does two things. It provides clinicians eg GP’s, pharmacists and community nurses with secure access to the latest patient information. It also gathers data from pharmacies and general practices. This electronic information can be shared through Shared Care View so that people get the fastest, safest and best care possible. Records are held in a secure database that can only be accessed by clinicians. People who don’t want some or all of their health information to be shared have the right to opt out. For more information talk to a health professional that you trust to discuss the implications of that decision.

LOCAL MP OPENS NEW GEN-i DATACENTRE NEAR AIRPORT

Local MP and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Amy Adams, officially opened Gen-i’s new $10.5 million datacentre at Perimeter Road within the Christchurch International Airport campus on Tuesday 13th August. Ms Adams said that it was encouraging to see businesses like Gen-i, which is Telecom’s information technology subsidiary, investing in Canterbury’s economic and physical rebuild. “There is growing demand for ICT solutions such as Cloud and video services that harness the speed of the new fibre and mobile networks that are being rolled out around the country,” said Ms Adams. “Datacentres such as this allow New Zealand companies and the public sector to retain their data securely within New Zealand using Cloud services,” she said. “Given the difficulty many businesses in Canterbury

had in accessing their critical data following the earthquakes, the benefits of storing information remotely from your physical premises are obvious,” said Ms Adams. The new datacentre facility was built to the latest building code and seismic standards and incorporates the key design principles of resilience, energy efficiency, physical security and future flexibility. Background Gen-i recently announced a partnership with Cloud provider, Revera, to further strengthen its datacentre network and specialist Cloud capabilities. Gen-i is building another datacentre facility in Auckland, and has also expressed plans on expanding its existing ones in Dunedin and Wellington. The company already has a combined network of 14 other Gen-i datacentres and five Revera Homeland datacentres across New Zealand.

MP FOR A DAY last Friday. Ben accompanied Ms Adams on visits to Waitaha School at Templeton and Cholmondeley Home in Governor’s Bay. He and Ms Adams also met with the new Selwyn District Council CEO David Ward Ellesmere College student at the Council’s offices in Ben Alsop Ten-Hove found out Rolleston. The Year 12 student said that what it was like to be an MP for a day when he joined Selwyn MP at this stage he was considering Amy Adams on work experience a career in either politics or

medicine and wanted to find out more about what the role of a local MP entailed. “I am interested in helping other people and hopefully having a positive impact on their lives,” said Ben. Ben said that he was very grateful for the opportunity to spend the day with Ms Adams. “It was brilliant - I enjoyed seeing some of the different facets of being a local politician,” he said. “Going to Waitaha School was a highlight and seeing all of the great work that they do there,” said Ben. Ms Adams said that she was impressed by Ben’s confidence and genuine enthusiasm for community issues and helping others. “It’s very heartening to see someone like Ben who at such a young age is already engaged in the issues that politicians confront and thinking about how he could frame his career to help people around him. Ben has a natural empathy towards people and I think he’ll go far,” said Ms Adams.

ATTRACTIONS AND EVENTS NEEDED FOR THE 2013 ELLESMERE DIRECTORY Organisers of the 2013 Ellesmere Directory are inviting anyone in the community who wishes to publicise their annual or biennial events, to send in details as soon as possible for free inclusion in this publication. As well, it’s considered that attractions in Ellesmere would also be worthy of inclusion, i.e. the local bird hide, skate board facilities at Leeston Park, the BMX track at Osborne Park, Doyleston - in fact, any amenity or facilities that would be of interest to people living in, or visiting the district. Maybe there are many other such attractions within the district that we, the local community, or visitors would like to enjoy or make use of. To get this publication printed and distributed by mid-September, details need

to be sent in within the next week or so. Information can be sent to Kathy Grant at P.O. Box 24, Southbridge 7642: phone/fax 3242-083; email kjgrant@xtra.co.nz; or to June McLachlan, 3243-684 or email to daffodils@xtra.co.nz
