was President of the Ellesmere A & P Association. The current President Warwick Boon found the shield while clearing out some of the shelves at the showgrounds. The shield holds a written history of its own with the names of several primary schools that once were in the district but that have long since shut down and amalgamated into the 3 primary schools we have today. Schools such as Lakeside, Killinchy, Leeston Convent School and Brookside, names that will no doubt bring back memories for a lot of people. Thomas Stephens was a man that encouraged furthering peoples education and was very involved in community concerns. It is believed that he at one time was also a councillor with the Selwyn District Council. He ran a sheep and crop

farm in Irwell “Waipuna” running Ryeland sheep. His farm was the second registered Ryeland sheep farm in New Zealand. He was a strong exhibitor at the Agricultural and Pastoral shows. Thomas Andrew Stephens was born in Brookside and moved to “Waipuna” to set up home with his family. The farm is still owned by the Stephens family with his grandson and great grandson developing it into growing black currants for Rybena juice. The Stephens family have a strong connection with the show with great grandson Stuart Stephens being on the present committee. The shield will become part of the Agrikids challenge that has been running now for 6 years. With the three local primary schools in the running to win this prestigious award.

TRAINING YOUR PUPPY Our family recently got a puppy -a spoodle no less!! I was doing a home call to a bitch with 8 irresistible one day old puppies and a seed was planted - maybe it was time to get a puppy. I’m not sure whether there is ever a perfect time to get a crazy, bouncy, bitey bundle of energy, but we are now the proud owners of a partly trained larger bundle of energy that the family wouldn’t be without. Training your puppy starts before you get them. The breeder will hopefully have gently exposed the puppies to a range of people, animals, noises and started toilet training. When you get them home, working

out a routine of play, feeding, training and sleeping will help you have a dog that fits in well with your household and is a welcome member of your community. As many owners now allow their dogs to be inside the home, having a well behaved dog will help you enjoy your pet a lot more. The first thing to understand about training is that it is happening all the time. Training begins straight away by recognising the behaviours that we want to reward and ignoring the behaviours we want to discourage. Training needs to be fun. Animals, just like children learn more quickly if they are stimulated and

Above photo: Rachel reading up on Stella’s training. Below : Stella

enjoying it rather than feeling threatened and scared. When a puppy is chewing on something valuable, they need to be given a more appropriate toy to chew. When a puppy is jumping up or whining it needs to be completely ignored but when sitting quietly given attention. Modern training methods will show your pet that they are a respected member of the family that know their place through rewards and consistency rather than punishment. Puppy preschools offer a great opportunity for you and your puppy to learn the basic skills of training and socialisation. Phillida Gordon at Vetent Leeston has started taking puppy preschool classes and has many years of experience which she can pass on. Class sizes are small allowing plenty of opportunity for individual attention and your puppy will be less likely to feel overwhelmed. Classes cover training methods, health matters and feeding options and there is plenty of opportunity for your puppy to play with the other puppies. The ideal age for your puppy to attend is between 8-16 weeks and the classes run for 4 weeks. Just like anything in life, the more effort you put in, the greater the reward. A happy well trained dog will give you years of happiness and friendship. After all, “a dog is a man’s best friend”. Geoff Malcolm Vetent Leeston ph 324 3575

LIVE TO RIDE

Selwyn District Council has launched a new public education campaign and motorcycle skills coaching programme to help reduce motorcycle crashes in the district. Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is 20

skills, and learn and practice new techniques. The courses are delivered by NZTA qualified trainers and include off road and on road training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills. The half day course costs $20, while the full day advanced course is $50. The Council is offering all riders that complete the courses between

times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2008 - 2012, there were 65 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn District resulting in four fatalities, 34 serious injuries, 31 minor injuries and seven non-injury crashes. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning says the number of motorcycle crashes is very concerning and the Council has launched the ‘Live to Ride’ campaign to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn. “Live to Ride aims to make motorists more aware of motorcylists on our roads and also encourage riders to increase their skills and reduce their chances of being involved in a crash,” she says. As part of Live to Ride the Council is offering subsidised half and full day motorcycle skills coaching. The courses offer motorcyclists the chance to refresh their

September 2013 and March 2014 entry into a prize draw for a $300 protective motorcycle clothing voucher. A Live to Ride motorcycle information flyer has been developed for riders and will be distributed at events in Selwyn and from Council offices and libraries. Motorcyclists who request a copy of the Live to Ride information flyer on line will also go into a draw to win one of two $40 MTA Vouchers. Motorcyclists who want to register for the courses can do so by visiting or phoning 03 347 2901. Places are limited,so earlyregistration is advised.

A BIG THANK YOU To the group of 10 prisoners from the Rolleston Prison, that have been working so hard down at the Ellesmere Golf Course. For the last five days these men have been arriving at 6.50am and finishing at 3pm. Not only clearing up after the storm that hit our area last week, but tidying up the trees that surround the course.

The effort that has been put into the tidy up has been outstanding. Thanks guys.

LEESTON MARKET UPDATE With the arrival of Spring we have also had the extremes of weather, but whatever the weather you will always find the dedicated stall holders at the Leeston Market in High Street on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. With the weather improving and the excitement of Christmas looming, what better place to shop than the local community ‘Craft and Farmers Market’? Prior to Christmas you will find us there every weekend so keep an eye on the updates in the Ellesmere Echo. In the upcoming month though the Market dates to add to your calendar are: Saturday 5th October and Saturday 19th October. Saturday the 19th October is also the Ellesmere A & P Show, so come on down and have a real day in Leeston, spend time at the Market and then go down and have a country visit at the Show, what a fantastic day out it will be,whatever the weather . A big thank you to Anna, from Special Delivery Delights, who has handed over the Market updates to me. I hope to do justice to the Leeston Market with my reports. It’s so exciting that the Ellesmere Echo is circulated in colour which in turn will really help our stall displays stand out in the fortnightly editions, including my hand painted pots and craft -

Siouxzart. I have been working on a new design for coasters and magnets based on a special memorial rock that is now pride of place in an Australian rock garden so if you want something for that special gift, come and see what is available at Siouxzart at the Leeston Market on Saturday 19th October. As many of the stall holders at the Leeston Market make the goods they have on offer, you can always ask for a special order whether it’s cake pops from Special Delivery Delights, a special necklace from Margaret for a glam night out, or a pillar and candle from Siouxzart for when the lights go out. Often we can help out so come and talk to us. Janice has fresh produce, and nuts which are a must for the Christmas cake. Rose has the most delightful whacking dolls, and Daphne has cushion covers and gorgeous pot holders. Obviously there is so much more so please come and check out what treasures are on offer. Remember that Summer will find the return of our seasonal stalls at the Market but we always welcome new stall holders. Please contact the Leeston Market Committee Secretary – Shirley Fisher on email – shirleydfisher@msn.com for a stall application form and further information or you can call Anna Nurse on 3248212 or 021 1042712. See you at the next Leeston Market, Saturday 5th October – 9am till noon – whatever the weather.

INTRODUCING NATHANAEL PROVIS Canterbury-born artist Nathanael Provis is wellknown for his highly detailed and atmospheric landscape oil paintings, which have been seen over the years at Fishers Fine Arts and Alexis Galleries in Christchurch, but now he begins an exciting new chapter of his art career, exhibiting from a brand new gallery in Dunsandel. “I’m very fortunate to exhibit here – it’s such a beautiful space with a warm ambience and excellent natural lighting”. The gallery, located at the south end of the Che Bello centre on the Main South Road Dunsandel, is now open to the public and here some of Nathanael’s most recent paintings can be viewed along with a small collection of his earlier works, including a massive 3 -metre painting from the ‘Mighty Peaks of Aotearoa’ series. The two works in this series created quite a sensation when they were first exhibited in Christchurch, with the first one fetching the artist a record

price paid for his artwork to date. “I like to paint big” says Nathanael, who first began drawing landscape scenes as a young child, often using felt-tip pens and crayons on paper and cardboard. “These days I prefer to use more archivallycorrect materials” he laughs - “oil paints on stretched canvas or prepared board are my favourites.” Nathanael’s current series of works depicts what he describes as ‘the Deep South in a new light’. In recent years, his focus has been on portraying dramatic wilderness scenes with moody grey skies, evoking a strong sense of apprehension and drama. But now, there is warmth in those skies – subtle hues of yellow, pink and mauve, like you would see in the sky just before sunset. “I want the people who bring my art into their homes to feel calm and rested when they see it at the end of a busy day, and perhaps experience just a little bit of that refreshing feeling

that comes from standing on the edge of a tranquil lake on a perfect evening.” Despite being best-known for his realist paintings, Nathanael also has a passion for impressionist and abstract art. His contemporary ‘Landfall’ series has been very popular over the years, but now visitors catch a glimpse of another form of abstract artwork that he is about to display at his Dunsandel exhibition. “Art is a journey – it evolves as your tastes change and develop, it stops you from becoming bored or stale with any one style” he says. The gallery, situated on the corner of Main South Road and Hororata Dunsandel Road, is set up so that visitors will feel welcome to stay awhile to contemplate the artworks on display - they can relax in a comfortable chair while having a chat with the artist. The gallery hours are Wednesday to Friday 12:00pm – 5:00pm, and Saturdays 11:30am – 3:00pm.

ON THE TRAIL WITH OLIVE... This update comes a little late – the storms of 10th September took out our power, water and of course internet access – us and 28000 other people! One week later we are again made aware of the resilience of Selwyn and the way neighbours help neighbours to make things work. OMG, I love this place! August saw my activity level lifting – if that’s possible. I have been meeting people in Rolleston, Kirwee, Prebbleton, Southbridge, West Melton, Ladbrooks and Dunsandel. I have continued to go to as many Resident’s and Community meetings as I can fit in – difficult when so many happen on the same night. It has been fascinating listening to the so very diverse issues in TaiTapu, Prebbleton, Windwhistle and again at Leeston. I attended the public meeting at Darfield on the future use of the McHugh Plantation – the most recent addition to our rates charges. I have had great hospitality at Fireside meetings in Bankside and West Melton. The Leeston Rural Women hosted a wonderful dinner. I attended the Rolleston garden Club meeting and learned more about rhodos and camellias in one night than I had known before. The Hororata Community continues to attend meetings convened by the Hororata Community Trust and we seem to be close to achieving a consensus about what the people of Hororata want their village to look

like now and into the future. It will be important to be able to partner with Council to start a ‘Hororata 2020’ journey. At all of these meetings, the distance between the Mayor and the people of Selwyn stands out as the Number one complaint. It was interesting to note that at the Council meeting on the 11th following the storm, no mention was made of it at all. Business as usual in spite of millions and millions of dollars lost in destroyed equipment, devastated landscapes, and yet more phenomenal challenges to livelihoods. And of course we have ridiculous and avoidable challenges – when the power goes off, Southbridge loses its sewage system because they don’t have their own generator; the Glentunnel water source can only run intermittently because the generator is shared with another pump – and so it goes on. The complaint from the Police about the lackadaisical response of the Selwyn District Council to the storm was ironically validating. Liquidation of Selwyn Holdings has proceeded. The challenges to the eastern Selwyn Sewer System has been discussed but referred back for more committee work. Curiously, in the face of all this, Council spent one hour discussing the best composition of cycle lane surfaces! And so it goes on. Countdown starts with the posting of papers next Friday.

ELLESMERE HERITAGE PARK PROGRESSING WELL The year began with several opportunities taken to promote the project and help the community understand the vision of the Trust and its management committee. A membership drive was begun with a letter box drop of information carried out in the Leeston, Southbridge, Dunsandel and Doyleston areas. The plans were put on display in the Arcade shop windows and a brochure which includes a membership form was printed and continues to be distributed at every opportunity. A float (of sorts) was entered in the Leeston Xmas Parade with signage attached to an old Farmal tractor sitting on a trailer which was pulled by a restored David Brown tractor. During March two successful Open Days were held to provide an opportunity for the community to have a look at the site and get a feel for what was intended and how it will all come together. These two days encouraged the revival of many old memories of the past. The Leeston Fete in April provided another opportunity to promote the Park and raise some funds at the same time. A competition to guess the origins of several old pieces of equipment generated interest and provided a good point of conversation regarding the intentions for the Park. The Treasurer has spoken to several community groups about the project. The membership currently stands at slightly over 100 members and continues to grow. At the February meeting Trustee Roger Gilbert advised

that the Trust had received confirmation of its registration from the Charities Commission as a Charitable Trust. The Collections Policy, which had also been initiated by Roger was re-confirmed. In May a Vision Workshop ‘Building Our Critical Path’ was facilitated by Pat McEvedy and assisted in clarifying the future direction and what was required to happen to prepare the site. Initial displays are to be of local Maori history, of Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) history, a printing and a saddler display, with other possibilities such as a butchery already identified along with a general display of other gifted articles. The resolving of a possible contamination issue due to the past use of the site involving fuel and chemicals is being actively pursued. Work is being done to confirm either that there is no existing contamination or whatever contamination is found is mitigated or removed. This is a matter of required process through Environment Canterbury rather than any cause for concern. Discussion with the Selwyn District Council has indicated a resource consent is required for a ‘Change of Use’ of the site. This is now underway and will be approved once the contamination issue has been sorted and other requirements under the Regional Management Act have been cleared. The Council continues to provide sound advice and support for the project. The management committee has been working away during the year actively cleaning the

inside of the main building, internal rooms have been dismantled, the secretary’s office painted, one service pit filled in and fully enclosed, electrical wiring issues attended to and bird proofing begun. Cleaning up of the felled pine trees has meant considerable time splitting and selling of firewood. In July a Site Development Plan was adopted which provided documented direction as to what was required on the site and gave support to the architectural drawings. A Health & Safety Plan has been written and necessary First Aid equipment is on site. The relationship between the Heritage Park and the Ellesmere Historical Society continues to build towards a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties. This document will clarify boundaries so members understand the differences in the purpose and role of each of the organizations and provide a platform of co-operation and support to each other. The Ellesmere Lions have confirmed they will provide practical support to the project and in the future will include financial support. Having reflected on what has been achieved since October 2012 it is now time to move into the future and continue the development of this project into the vision of the Trust as a viable contribution to the Ellesmere and districts community.

Leading Learners is a one day practical course for Selwyn secondary or home schooled students who have held their learner licence for at least three months and/or have done at least 40 hours of driving practice. The learner is accompanied by a parent or caregiver in their own car. Leading Learners was created by Selwyn District Council, and is taught by driving instructors, road safety professionals and the Police. “No one can totally prepare learners for everything they will face as a driver, especially when they are on their own,” says Selwyn District Youth Road Safety Advisor Carolyn Bennison, who developed the course. “Leading Learners teaches young drivers things that other programmes don’t, in a safe offroad environment, such as driving on different road

surfaces, stopping distances, hazards, distraction and peer pressure. It helps to prepare teenagers for the time when they get their restricted licence and start driving alone.” Leading Learners is endorsed by New Zealand motor racing legend Chris Amon, MBE. Mr Amon says that he believes the programme is of the highest standard and greatly enhances the skills of learner drivers wishing to obtain their restricted licence. Mrs Bennison attributes a reduction in young driver crash statistics in Selwyn district to the success of Leading Learners. “We always receive positive feedback from the learners and parents who attend, and now the statistics also reflect that,” she says. 155 learners and their parents or caregivers have taken part in the course since it started in April 2011. Evaluation after the course has shown that of the 155 learners, 100% have improved their driving skills and knowledge and 93% have improved their driving

behavior. 69% of the learners passed their restricted driving tests first time and 87% said Leading Learners had helped prepare them for the restricted test and for driving alone. The programme was also helpful to the parents and caregivers who attended as all of this group said they learned something new. Leading Learners is being held on 9 and 10 October. The programme is heavily subsidised by Selwyn District Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency, which allows it to be offered for only $20. “The programme is proven to create safer drivers and is great value as it would cost at least $250 to do this kind of training independently,” says Mrs Bennison. Registrations must be completed by 27 September, but as places are limited early booking is recommended. To register or for further information, please contact Carolyn Bennisonon (03)347 2944 or email carolyn.bennison@selwyn.govt.nz.

THERE’S LOTS TO DO AT SELWYN LIBRARIES Selwyn libraries are holding a series of starlight storytime sessions for kids over the coming weeks and Leeston library is also hosting craft activities for kids. “Starlight storytime sessions are all about monsters this year,” says Selwyn Libraries Manager Glen Walker. “Because monster stories can get scary we’re encouraging children to bring a torch and something snuggly to hold on to. We’re got the milk and marshmallows and our staff will be patrolling the library to check that there’s not something dark and mysterious somewhere out there, trying to get in,” he says. Starlight storytime sessions are suitable for children aged 3-7, and a parent or caregiver should also attend. The free storytimes are at:

· Rolleston Library on Friday 20 September from 6 - 7 pm · Leeston Library on Friday 27 September from 6 - 7 pm · Darfield Library on Friday 4 October from 6 7 pm Leeston Library is also holding two craft sessions for children aged 5-12 years and a workshop for adults. The school holiday craft sessions are being held on:· Thursday 3 October from 10-11am – teaching children how to make your own tile art, and · Wednesday 9 October, from 10-11am – teaching children how to make your own tin can art These sessions are free and caregiver supervision is optional.

Leeston library is also holding a workshop on making your own cleaning products on Saturday 5 October, from 2 – 3.30pm. The workshop is aimed at people who want to spend less on cleaning products, those who have allergies to particular ingredients and people want to know what is included in their products. The workshop will cover how to make clothes washing powder and liquid, cream cleanser and surface spray cleaner which can be used all around the house. You can also take home your own products. To participate, bring your own empty spray bottle and a small jar with a lid and $5 to cover ingredients.

SOUTHBRIDGE BOWLING CLUB HOSTS TIMARU CLUB On Saturday 14 September members of the Southbridge Bowling Club (together with some men from Dunsandel and Leeston Clubs) welcomed 21 players from the Timaru Town and Country Bowling Club for a friendly day of bowls before the start of the serious interclub competitiond on 28 September. After morning tea the players enjoyed a game of fours before relaxing in the clubhouse over the lovely lunch prepared for them. Games of triples were played in the afternoon and much laughter and chat

could be heard during play as the men all got to know each other. The men from Timaru thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated their relaxing day in Southbridge and many comments were made that it was one of the best bowling greens they had played on. Club nights for the Southbridge Bowling Club are held on Thursday evenings. If anyone would like to have a go at this popular sport just come along and you will be most welcome at this friendly club.

Photo above shows players enjoying the sunshine and the friendly game of bowls. And below John Rasmussen and his opponent discuss the game.

BILL WOODS FOR MAYOR It became obvious at the meeting held on Thursday night at the St Johns rooms in Leeston that both Leeston and Southbridge are suffering from the same problems as all other small towns in the Selwyn area. There is a feeling amongst the residents that both these towns are suffering from inattention from the Selwyn Council. It appears to most people that a greater share of attention is given to Rolleston. Leeston was once a proud town that had the council headquarters and two banks. There was a sense of optimism with the new Supermarket and Chemist buildings opening. And Leeston’s activity flowed through to neighbouring Southbridge. With Leeston not receiving the same amount of visitors sue to the closing of the local council office and the Sicon depot, the local businesses have struggled with the future not looking so bright. I can remember the promises that were given to assure Leeston that it would not suffer due to the relocation of the council. Leeston and Southbridge are a good case of ‘out of sight , out of mind’. The council as been very lax in

endeavouring to encourage more activity in these towns. Another important topic was the recent flooding, especially around Leeston. There have been proposals for years now on how to divert the flow of water away from the town. Typically other issues have taken precedence. It will take a determined effort to solve this problem and it needs to be done before the situation occurs again. Now that it is election time you will hear promises flow like water, no pun intended but they will be hollow promises destined for the too hard basket. There is ONE person you can rely on to solve this problem. BILL WOODS. He came to your aid to help solve the sewerage problem and he will do it again. CAR RALLY SUCCESS A great day was had by everyone that attended the car rally last Sunday fundraising for the World Challenge trip for Ellesmere College students travelling to Cambodia and Vietnam in December 2014. The idea for the rally was Bridget Roxburgh’s who offered to co-ordinate the event with the help of parents and students. Many hours of

BILL WOODS FOR MAYOR LEESTON PEOPLE BE ASSURED, BILL WOODS WILL HELP WITH THEIR DRAINAGE PROB-

“Results speak louder than words”

planning went into the event which everyone agreed was a resounding success and as many participants remarked it was a great community family fun day. The starting point for the rally was at the Ellesmere Motor Racing Club where competitors were briefed and sent off in waves by Rob Roxburgh. Competitors had a variety of tasks to perform, items to collect and questions to answer. Some of the tasks they were asked to perform were shooting at the Southbridge Rifle Club, asking to use the local councillor’s loo, ride a BMX bike around the track at Doyleston, operate a digger, mini golf at Coe’s Ford and shooting a target with a fire hose at the Southbridge Park. Some of the tasks were quite tricky as the same councillor found out on the BMX track! Some very interesting articles were returned to the club house including a dead bird and a rabbit’s ear. There were many other stops around the course where everyone young and old had a great time including the chance for refreshments at the Springston Hotel. The barbeque at the raceway proved really popular before and after the event. Once everyone had returned Rob who was the M.C. and auctioneer for the day ran the chocolate wheel and then a very successful auction was held. Over $8500.00 was raised for the day which was fantastic.

Results for the day were 1st Love Team, 2nd Dinky, Dave and Dick, 3rd Crusty Jugglers. The parents and students would like to thank Bridget and Rob for their organisation and amazing support for the event. We also had many other sponsors who we would also like to publicly acknowledge: Southbridge Rifle Club, Geoff Hampton Engineering, Springston Hotel, Ravensdown, Lincoln Community Care, MG Marketing (Dave Reese), Southbridge Tasty Meats, The Ellesmere Echo, Five Star Paint, Equus Watertight Technology, Canterbury Waterproofing, Oakley’s Premium Vegetables, Andy Bailey, Southbridge Rugby Football Club, Southbridge Volunteer Fire Brigade, Ellesmere Motor Racing Club, BNZ Leeston, Clausens, Leeston Video Plus, A & S Motors, Hunting & Fishing Colombo Street, BNT, Repco, Vapamatic NZ Ltd, Mike & Fiona Miller, Sheat Contracting Ltd, Tuffnell Drainage, South Fuels, Scott Croft, Southbridge Takeaways, Pat & Lynley McEvedy, Ellesmere garden Centre & Florist, Sam Higgins.

Thursday 26th September, 2013

WE NEED YOU !!!! Leeston will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2014. There is a committee in place to organise the years’ events to celebrate this milestone in our history. The main event to kick the celebrations off is going to be a 2 day Leeston Country Fair on the 29th and 30th March 2014. The committee is planning an action packed 2 days that will reflect where Leeston has come from through to the present day. This event is going to be held at the Ellesmere A&P Showgrounds providing ample space to hold a great event showcasing Leeston. Some of the attractions will include a number of mini workshops on traditional skills like preserving, making jam, planting out a veggie garden for the year etc. The Ellesmere Camera Club have offered to do a vintage style photo booth with vintage costumes provided and do some old style family portraits. The Ellesmere Vintage Club will have machinery on display along with a number of working displays. The committee are seeking other groups and clubs to come forward and take up

the challenge and get in the spirit of the celebrations and do something at the Country Fair that reflects their organisation and provides some interest or entertainment value for people attending the event. If you’re unsure about what your group or club could do to get involved, the committee have a number of ideas that they are looking for clubs to get involved with. However, they would also love to hear about your ideas too. ‘We want this event to be a reflection of Leeston so it is crucial we have community involvement,’ Sarah Crozier (member of the organising committee) ‘We want to make this an event that brings people out to our wee township and show them what a great community we are. Events like this are so well supported by the community it makes it a pleasure to be involved.’ If you’re involved with a club or group in Leeston get in touch with your committee and let’s make this an event to remember. Please contact Gordon Wadie 324 2255 or Sarah Crozier 324 4412 or email info@leeston.co.nz

SELWYN YOUTH COUNCIL ESTABLISHED The new Selwyn Youth Council is looking forward to their role of engaging with young people and representing their views. “We’re really excited about the formation of the Youth Council and we want to make sure that young people’s views are heard in our district,” says Youth Council Chairperson Tristan Misselbrook. 18% of Selwyn’s population are between 12 and 24 years. Selwyn’s first Youth Council was formed following a District Youth Forum in May at which attendees voted unanimously to support the establishment of a Youth Council. The Youth Council is made up of 11 young people aged between 14 and 24 who live in Selwyn, and two youth worker representatives. The Youth Council members are: · Michael Anderson (Lincoln High School) · Councillor Sam Broughton (Youth worker representative) · Rafael Clarke (Lincoln High School) · Aaron Donaldson (Ellesmere College) · Brock Hatton (Darfield High School) · Tristan Misselbrook (Lincoln High School) · Daniel Moore (Lincoln High School) · Melissa Moore (Lincoln High School) · Heather Neill (Lincoln High School) · Henry Olivier (Darfield High School)

· Sarah Pascall (of Burnham, attends Middleton Grange School) · George Steel (Lincoln High School) · Craig Steven (Youth worker representative) The Youth Council have already received $32,000 from the Ministry of Youth Development to stage a two day event for young people next year which will include a ‘have a go’ day with a carnival and market, a battle of the bands, a concert featuring local talent and a youth forum. Tristan says the Youth Council are also planning to hold a series of conversation cafes in towns in Selwyn and will also visit local secondary schools to explain the role of the Youth Council. “The conversation cafés are a way for us to talk to other young people in a café style setting which is a relaxed and friendly environment about what issues and projects they think should be priorities. That will help us to identify what projects we want to work on, or advocate for on behalf of young people,” he says. The Youth Council will meet monthly and its members will be appointed annually through an application process. Youth Council members will work with the Council to provide a youth perspective on a range of issues, and will develop submissions on matters of interest to young people.
