From nothing more than a bare paddock, in August 1993, a transformation began. Twenty years on that bare paddock is now known as the award winning vineyard, Ngapuarata Vines and Wines. Beginning labour weekend, some twenty years ago, winery owners Ed Matoe and Yvonne Grant along with family and friends started the planting of almost ten thousand grape cuttings at the Highfield Road property. They were still going two weeks later! Two varieties of grape were planted, Riesling and Pinot Noir, and later down the track Chardonnay. At first the grapes were co n tr act ed to an o th er winemaker but after their relocation a decision was made by Ed and Yvonne to produce wine under their own name of ‘Ngapuarata’. A winemaker was employed and in 2004 the first vintage, a Chardonnay, rolled off the line. “The next problem to overcome was how to sell the wine, (rest assured the boot of a car comes in handy),” laughed Yvonne. Ngapuarata has always been extremely accessible available at A & P Shows, specialty tastings and local hostelries and cafes. In 2007 Ed and Yvonne entered their 2OO6 Pinot Noir in the New Zealand International Wine Show, and were the worthy recipients of a bronze medal. A rather large feat for a small vi n eyar d . Th i s su cces s encouraged the pair to enter other vintages into shows.

producing great r esults. Ngapuarata achieved three more bronze medals, three years running. However they still needed to secure an outlet to sell the wine. Much thinking was done, and following a middle of the night eureka moment, the Ngapuarata Tasting House was planned. Yvonne wanted a place where people could come and have a wine, or a beer plus some good food, while enjoying the hot Canterbury days with a view of the Southern AIps. Easter weekend 2O1O the Ngapuarata Vines and Wines Tasting House was officially opened to the public. Unbeknown at this time was the fact that later the same year, the unforgettable September 4th earthquake would strike. The epicentre was confirmed at j us t 9O O m etr es fr o m Ngapuarata on Highfield Road, ten kilometres south of Kirwee, where the faultline opened up, and moved the road. This significant event saw the tasting house renamed ‘Quake

Shaken Café’ - a name that initiates many a conversation over a vino. Quake Shaken Café is a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the views and sample the delicious wines, while enjoying some of the great food on offer.

From the Malvern Community Hub……. “Have you decided whether you need a bus, or not?” This is the question being asked by Don Fairbrother of the North Canterbury Mini Bus Trust. The Malvern Community Hub is turning the question back to you, the community. Do you need a bus, or not? This month a shopping trip to Westfield and one to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre have already been cancelled due to lack of passengers. At the Hub we believe a community bus is a good resource. We want to keep it, but the final decision is yours. If it is not used, the North Canterbury Mini Bus Trust will give it to another community who want it more than we do. At the moment we run trips to Riccarton and Northlands Mall on the first and third Tuesdays each month. A driver is available for this and the cost is $10 return. On Thursday mornings there is a local run to take people from home to shops, library, doctors etc and the cost is $2 for this. Anyone over 25 is able to drive the bus for other trips and it is generally available, any time and any day, so people can go anywhere they want. The Hub has a Facebook page - called the Malvern Community Hub and can be contacted through it or contact can be made via the Library. A great opportunity to book a trip - and bring your friends!

Brie Gullery reads the Athlete’s oath in front of competitors, coaches, judges, dignitaries from GymSports NZ, and Council representatives at the recent GymSports National Championships , held in Napier. Local West Melton athlete, Brie Gullery recently competed at the G y m S p o r ts N a t i on a l Ch amp ionships wi th th e outstanding result of fourth overall in New Zealand. Brie also attained a Proficiency Medal for passing a mark, set by Gymsports NZ, which must be gained only at the National Championships. This mark is set extremely high and Brie has every right to feel very proud of

her creditable result. Her scores being personal highs, were achieved in New Zealand, this season. Brie was also selected out of over four hundred other ath l etes f r o m A er o b i c, Trampolining and Rhythmic Gymnastics codes to read out the Athletes' Oath, at the Opening Ceremony. This was done in front of all competitors, coaches, judges and dignitaries

from GymSports NZ, as well as the Napier City Council. To make it an even more memorable competition for Brie, she also cel ebrated her six teenth birthday while there. At home now, Brie is enjoying some much-deserved rest, while mending from a hopefully minor back injury, prior to preparation for next year and Level 10, the last competitive level in Rhythmic Gymnastics.

This Labour Weekend sees the beginning of the famous Southern Woods Plant Nursery Clearance Sale. It’s an opportunity to pick up plenty of fantastic bargains, and shouldn't be missed. Unlike nearly all other plant retailers, the vast majority of the plants they sell are grown at Southern Woods, from either seeds or cuttings. All their plants are collected and grown-on right on Selwyn’s doorstep. A consequence of this is that they now desperately need the space to lay down next year’s crops. The team at Southern Woods would also like to remind everyone that the time for flights of grass grub beetles is here. Watch out for these little critters stripping the leaves off trees at night time. This is particularly devastating for young trees in the early establishment phase. Gardeners will know they are around when any outside light left on is swarming with them. They are hard to deter but try smelly foliar sprays like Neem Oil Insecticide or fish-based products, alternatively cover the plant with a fine net. The Labour Week Sale commences on Saturday, October 26th and carries on through to the following Saturday, November 2nd. Southern Woods are open all Labour Weekend from 9am to 5pm, with delicious coffee available on site.

Eager shoppers at a previous Southern Woods Nursery sale take advantage of some of the quality stock at bargain prices.

songwriter Mel Parsons. Mel, recently returned from an extensive European tour, has just released her new album Red Grey Blue. “Her performance on Saturday night was incredible. She has a fantastic stage presence and her strong, beautiful voice was captivating,” commented a spokesperson for the event organisers. “Both performers were well received by the one hundred and forty people in the audience and everyone had an awesome and entertaining night.” Springfield School PTA raised $6,500 from the event and would like to thank the community for attending, the parents who helped make the

event such a success, the sponsors for their support, the Canterbury Gliding Club for the use of their venue and of course the performers themselves who put on a such an entertaining and professional show.

Do you have pain in your shoulder? Pain that stops you from doing the things you want to do? Sleeping, eating, working and play! Well read on; then come and see us at Darfield Physio and Gym for an assessment and treatment of your condition. The shoulder joint itself is very complicated as it’s the most mobile joint in the body. It consists of the bones that make up a ball and socket joint, muscles called the rotator cuff that allow movement, a sack of fluid (bursa) that prevents pinching of these muscles, ligaments and a capsule which surrounds it all. Any of the structures can cause pain, the hard thing is deciding which of these is causing YOUR pain! Pain coming from the ball and socket could be due to a shoulder dislocation, arthritis or AC (acromioclavicular) joint pathology caused from landing on your shoulder. Pain from the muscles could be due to a tear or strain. This may be caused from repetitive actions such as lifting or throwing and result in weakness or the inability to move your shoulder. That then brings us to the bursa which is often the most common cause of shoulder pain. The sack of fluid gets pinched and becomes swollen and irr itat ed, therefore making movement of the shoulder painful. Ligaments don’t tend to cause a problem within the shoulder but the capsule can

get tight causing stiffness and a r ed uct io n in movement. These are just a few of the possible diagnoses of pain, but as mentioned the hardest thing is working out which one is causing your pain in particular. Physiotherapy uses a variety of tests to decide which is most likely causing the pain, and we can also refer you on to get this confirmed by

“Call me now to find out what your home is worth on today's market” Phone 027 662 2751 or 03 318 8204 Barbara Maley of the Christchurch Carriage driving Society. The Christchurch Carriage Driving Society will hold their D.O.D (Dressage and Obstacle Driving) competition on Labour Day at the Hororata Domain. This event takes place in the domain racecourse adjacent to the Hororata Parish Spring Fair. “ W e h ave tw en ty tw o competitors travelling from all over the South Island to attend this D.O.D which has classes from miniature ponies to large horses. This is the first year we have held the event in Hororata and we are looking forward to using the great facilities,” said Barbara Maley from Greendale

and a m ember of th e Christchurch Carriage Driving Society. A D.O.D is similar to a ridden one day event but the competitors are in horse drawn carriages rather than saddles. Each competitor has to complete a dressage test and six ‘hazards’; final placing is determined by the sum of the penalties accumulated over the trials. The dressage is similar to ridden dressage - specific movements are performed in a defined arena. Tests require the driver to display control through voice, whip and reins;

The Malvern Spinners and Weavers have been busy preparing for their exhibition which runs from October 25th until October 31st, at the Selwyn Gallery. The skills of the group will be exhibited with a wide array of articles, garments, fibre and spun yarn . The exhibition acknowledges the tremendous talent the Malvern Group is possessed of. Part of the event will show some of the past pieces which have won National and Regional Awards at the New Zealand Creative Fibre Festivals. Anna Harris, a renowned Canterbury Felter, is the Guest Exhibitor. Anna has won many awards at the New Zealand Creative Fibre Festival Fashion Parades. Organisers hope that everyone who visits the Exhibition at the Gallery will be able to relate to the true ‘Dye-versity’ of the local Malvern Spinning and Weavers.

the horses must display obedience, impulsion and correct paces. The ‘hazards’ or obstacle courses effectively replace the showjumping round in a ridden event. The course is set with cones and each has a ball placed on top. If a ball is dislodged the driver receives penalty points. The course must be driven in correct alphabetical sequence. “The D.O.D challenges drivers’ ability and horses’ agility and is great fun for spectators to watch. This is a growing sport and we encourage people to come along and see what it is all about,” Barbara said. The best place for people to view the D.O.D will be from the Hororata Parish Spring Fair grounds at the Domain. Entry to the Spring Fair is free. The competition begins at 9am and will run most of the day.

With two long weekends approaching (Labour weekend and Canterbury Anniversary (Show) weekend), roads in the Selwyn District, and in fact throughout New Zealand, will become increasingly busy. Long weekends, such as Labour weekend and Show weekend, bring an increase in traffic volumes as motorists head away for a holiday. Many vehicles also tow boats, caravans or trailers. To ensure everyone has a safe journey, here are some tips for driving during long weekends:

Allow extra time to get to the destination •

There is likely to be more traffic than usual and travel may need to be slower than normal as campervans, caravans and trailers are on the road. Allow extra time to get to there and drive with patience while avoiding taking unnecessary risks.

Share the road •

keep a safe following distance between the vehicle in front. This gives enough distance should the vehicle in front stop suddenly. Always watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly young children as they can be unpredictable. Give them plenty of space when passing. If towing, the maximum speed limit on the open road is 90 km/h. Remember that queues may build behind a towing vehicle. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass.

Don’t drive when tired Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. Long journeys can be tiring, and tiredness can be fatal if the signs aren’t recognised. There are simple ways to avoid fatigue and improve alertness: • Get plenty of sleep before a journey and try to drive at times of the day when usually awake • Plan to have rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of the vehicle and even take a short walk to improve alertness. Feeling tired? Take a short nap or if possible, share the driving. • Use air conditioning if the vehicle has it or else open the windows. Cool air will keep a driver more alert and will help avoid frustration and stress, which are major causes of fatigue.

Concentrate at intersections •

Patience and extra concentration at intersections is a must. A give way sign means slow down and be ready to stop and give way to other road users if necessary. A stop sign means a complete stop, then check for traffic and give way if required to do so. Indicate an intention to turn, change lanes or pull over early so other motorists know these intentions. This is extremely important to avoid accidents.

Buckle up •

Wearing a safety belt reduces the risk of serious injury by forty percent and it takes only a split second to buckle up. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that all passengers under fifteen years old are restrained either in a seat belt or an approved child seat suitable for their size and weight. There is a fine of $150 for each person not properly restrained in the vehicle.

State Driver Reviver stops to help weary Labour Weekend drivers recharge Thousands of travellers are expected to pull into State Driver Reviver rest stops on some of the country’s main routes this Labour Weekend to combat driver fatigue and enjoy free refreshments. State Insurance staff will be enticing them to take a break with free barista coffee, a sausage sizzle, fruit, bottled water, children's activities and Portaloos. Tired drivers can even take a nap. Conventional Hay Baling “It is fantastic the age is increasing from five to seven, however only 10% of New Zealand children aged seven are actually tall enough to not need a booster seat,” said Carolyn Bennison, Bennison Youth Road Safety Advisor for Selwyn District Council, who is a cer tif i ed chi ld r es tr ain t technician. “There is such a huge variance in the height of children, with a seven year old child ranging from 113 to 131cm tall. Child safety advocates recommend that children use a booster seat until they are 148cm tall or twelve years old, or when they

The Darfield Police would like to alert the community to law changes which take effect next Friday, November 1st. They would like especially to draw attention to the ‘Exception’ changes involving goods vehicles. Further information is available from www.nzta.govt.nz as well as from www.plunket.org.nz REQUIREMENT Exception from using a child restraint CURRENTLY (Until October 31st) If a current medical certificate is provided certifying that use of a restraint is impracticable, or undesirable for medical reasons, then the child does not have to be restrained in a child restraint or seatbelt. Applies to any person from age five or over. FROM NOVEMBER 1ST The current exemption is extended to include children under the age of five (previous medical certificate exemptions only available to children aged five or over). REQUIREMENT Exception from using a child restraint CURRENTLY (Until October 31st) If the vehicle is a goods vehicle (with an unladen weight exceeding 2000kg) in which seatbelts are not available, then a child under five years of age is not required to be restrained. FROM NOVEMBER 1ST This exemption has been REMOVED and so children must now be appropriately restrained if travelling in these vehicles

The seat belt cuts across the neck and the lap belt sits across the stomach, and children tend to slouch. When using adult seatbelts. Children are at an increased risk of severe head injuries, injuries to the abdominal organs, spinal fractures and of paralysis due to damage to the spinal cord. “I have heard some parents say that booster seats ar e

REQUIREMENT Child must be correctly secured in an approved child restraint. The LTSA website lists an ‘approved child restraint’ as: Ones that meet approved standards so users can be sure they have been designed and tested to provide an acceptable level of safety. Approved child restraints include: • infant restraints for young babies (such as baby capsules or rear-facing convertible car seats) • restraints for older babies, toddlers and preschool children (such as convertible or forward-facing car seats) • booster seats for preschool and school-aged children. These position children in the seat so they can safely use the adult safety belt • child safety harnesses (used with or without a booster seat) for preschool and school-aged children.

inconvenient or that their children think it is un-cool, but how much more inconvenient would it be to care for a child that was severely injured or paralysed,” Carolyn stressed? “Child restraints are there to protect children in the event of a crash, which is always a risk every time you are on the road.” The Five Step Test * 1. Does the child sit all the way back against the vehicle seat? 2. Do the child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the vehicle seat? 3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and the arm? 4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs? 5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip? If the answer is no to any of these questions, the child needs to be in a booster seat. Booster seats with a back and adjustable head height to cater for children up to 148cm tall and up to 36kg are available in the region of $110. Two expansive and beautiful gardens awaited us on our recent outing to the Ashburton area. The Garden Club visited Coniston many years ago, so it was interesting to return and see how the garden had progressed. Everything seemed larger and more lush with their Rhododendrons being in full bloom. Coniston boasts a magnificent display of Rhododendrons in every shade imaginable. The homestead is surrounded by trees planted back in 1860 and they are the back bone of this huge garden. A chapel and a small village shop have been re-located to the property and made interesting viewing . Winchmore Gardens was the next stop and we were greeted by the owner Marg Verrall, who after telling us a little history of the place, led us on a tour of this amazing country garden. The original homestead has long gone but in 1984 a new house was built on the site with great attention to the layout of the garden. Buxus hedging complemented all the borders and driveway and even parts of the pond. A Buxus parterre was an absolute delight complemented by roses. I think we all headed off home inspired by what we had seen. Happy Days.

Seniornet teaches people how to use email, the internet and other computing skills in a friendly and supportive environment and they can then apply their skills at home.” Lisa added that many people who enrol in the classes also

A range of Council services will soon be available at the Darfield and Leeston Service Centre, making it easier for Selwyn residents to access them.
