The main speaker for the June meeting of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club (RCPC) was Carl Shaw, Shaw a local resident and General Manager of the Canterbury Charity Hospital. Carl gave an extremely interesting address with accompanying graphics, on the background of the hospital. The facility has grown to two buildings in the short time it has been operational. It provides much sought after day surgery, and now also includes dentistry, which is proving popular. Members also learned more about several of their fellow members in ‘Mini Moments’, an entertaining way to get to know each other a little better. As the Rolleston Combined Probus Club President was

They came, they tuned up and they played their hearts out. The top twenty bands and four solo/duos from Canterbury have been selected to go on to the Smoke Free Rock Quest (SFRQ) regional finals on June 29th and 30th. Following the preliminary heats on June 15th and 16th Lincoln High School’s band (which was one o f fou r f rom th e school competing) ‘Pure Innocence’ (consisting of Laura Wadley, Emily and Oli via Chirnside), was amongst the Chirnside twenty named as successful in making it through to the Canterbury regional finals. The Canterbury regional finals are to be held at the same University of Canterbury Venue as the heats and ‘Pure Innocence’ will take to the stage on Sunday, June 30th. Around seven hundred entries are expected to go through the regional heats and finals in twenty three towns from Invercargill to Whangarei between now and July 13th. SFRQ Founder and Director Glenn Common commented that the standard of the bands playing off over the weekend ref lected th e in cr easing

sophistication that organisers have noted in recent years. “Over the twenty five years we have been running Smokefree Rock Quest there has been a massive sociological shift for young people,” he said. “The access contenders have to music, both the amount and range, is amazing. For us, this has resulted in an eclectic range of genres at any one time, r ath er th an on e tr en d dominating for a short period.” Following the regional finals, the

bands and solo/duos to represent Canterbury at the national finals will be announced (along with a range of other aw a r d s f r o m w o m en ’ s musicianship, to best song). These top placed musicians will then submit videos that go into the judging pool for selection to play off in the national final at Auckland, on September 28th. Tickets for the Canterbury finals are $20 at the door or presales from Ticket Direct.

The ‘Rumpus Room’ initiative began in term two and has already attracted a huge amount of interest with an average of thirty children attending on any given day. There is plenty of room for more and organisers are hoping to spread the word and let families know just how much fun and how beneficial, the

Parents remain with their children for the sessions and there is also a facilitator who directs and instructs. “We have had really positive feedback from parents who enjoy being able to take their children around the circuit at their own pace, and are able to spend more time on the equipment that their child enjoys the most,” said a spokesperson from the Rolleston Community Centre. A fees discount is available for more than one sibling as well as for any groups attending from Preschools. Preschoolers are pretty much guaranteed to have fun at Rumpus Room sessions in the Rolleston Recreation Centre where they’ll enjoy a fun and colourful circuit complete with music and games while trying out safe gym equipment designed for children. It’s a great way for children to get exercise, learn new skills and

burn off excess energy in a safe play environment. Fun for parents too, to catch up with friends, make new ones and enjoy some one on one time with their youngsters. Sessions run weekly during term time from 10-11am and 11am-12pm on Fridays. The cost is $3.50 for one child, and $2.50 for additional siblings.

Rolleston School’s superb PTA has once again risen to the call and organised among other things a much enjoyed Disco. These events fund new and exciting learning tools for the school students. Many classes have had much pleasure in the use of their new, recently supplied, iPads and the Jump Jam teams have also been recipi ents of the PTA’s generosity.

Above L to R: Summer Kennedy, Sophie Ryall, Kate Mulcay, Emma Marshall and Guy Stanway enjoy the Rolleston School PTA Disco.

“On Friday the 7th of June we went to a PTA disco. There were lollies, drinks, chips, light up toys and even Zumba. There was also a DJ that did the music - it was so loud that we hopped and

popped around. We paid a gold tired out!” coin to get in. At the end of the By Annabelle, Sabrina, disco we went home and had a good sleep because we were Taylor and Ashleigh.

Until the end of the month, the lower ground floor café of Ballantyne’s Department store in Christchurch is home to an exhibition with a difference. ‘Evolution of A Dancing Circle’. is a learning journey of Gallery Seven, a Year 2 class (six year olds), from Rolleston School. All of the art work reflects the initial provocation of how they looked, when dancing as part of a circle. The display which was installed at the beginning of June, includes images of the student’s artwork and the children’s comments as they worked through each process. The pupils, who worked though a

learning approach inspired by the education system in Reggio Emilia (an education philosophy started in Italy), were keen to take their sculptures into the wider communi ty, as is encouraged by this approach. They began to think big, by imagining their small wire sculptures becoming life sized and being placed in the Rolleston community, as a way of beautifying and creating interest. The Rolleston pupils even visited parks in the local area, thinking about possible placement. Unfortunately at the end of 2012, efforts to gain quotes for this project proved fruitless and a proposal was not able to be

completed for presentation to the Selwyn District Council (SDC). The opportunity to display their work at Ballantynes has reignited the dream and there is hope that interested parties who view these artworks may come forward with suggestions to make the artist’s dream a reality. Jade Bell, Bell the Rolleston teacher who is working alongside these children, is also actively continuing to look at ways in which she can assist the children fulfil their vision. Anyone able to express interest or support, please contact Rolleston School 03 347 8355 to speak with either Jade or Andrew Morrall (Principal) or jade.bell@rolleston.school.nz

Rolleston School have had a smart new logo designed for them recently, and it’s proving to be quite an inspiration for students. The white in the logo represents the children coming to school with a 'blank slate', and the

colours represent the ongoing journey through the School’s Express Values (Engaged, eXperi men tal , Pers is ten t, Resourceful, Excellent, Selfmanaging, Successful) on the Rolly Express Train Track. Emma Marshall is one of the

many students to be inspired by the new logo.

“Last Friday, our principal at Rolleston School announced that we are getting a new school logo. Our current logo has a train station on it where you stop and get off, but we're on the Rolly Express! We keep moving forward, not stopping or giving up. Our school is unique even from above, it looks like train tracks!

It’s been almost a year since Rolleston Florist & Gifts opened its doors and it’s time to celebrate the first birthday success of the business. Rolleston Florist & Gifts has become the ‘one stop shop’ for flowers and unique gifts in the town and is enjoying numerous repeat visits from shoppers both local and out of the area. These out-of-town customers make a point of coming in to see what is new in-store, whenever they are back in town. “Many locals swing by regularly to peruse the ever changing stock and shop layout,” said business owner Robyn Gardener. Gardener “The wall art has become extremely popular at a time when a large number of households are undergoing interior repairs to their homes and m any are taking the opportunity to ‘have a change’ from their original paintings etc,” Robyn added. “We have built up a loyal client base, with many local businesses enjoying the supply of fresh flower arrangements to their premises, on a weekly or fortnightly basis.” Flowers are popular with everyone it would appear, with the store regularly fielding ongoing orders from local schools, businesses

and of course the general public. It well and truly keeps the Rolleston Florist & Gifts’ team of floral experts on their toes. Robyn’s Florists are constantly coming up with innovative floral designs, which is just one of the many reasons repeat orders keep coming in. “We are really appreciative of those local residents who take pleasure in bringing in their garden snippings for us to use in our bouquets - in fact we wonder if they have any garden left to snip sometimes,” said Robyn with a laugh! “Wedding flowers have become a big part of our business. It is so rewarding to be involved with the process of helping brides with their big day and making their floral requirements as stress free as possible.” The shop also carries a wonderful selection of ‘bridal trimmings’ ie hor ses ho es, gar ters, rin g cushions etc to complement the constantly changing selection of wedding gifts. “Our spring calendar is quickly filling up with wedding bookings, so I would definitely advise brides to book their free consultation and discuss their big day, as soon as possible,” Robyn stressed.

It’s a case of wait and see, as well as being patient for the Rolleston Men’s Shed group, as they await Council processing for their building consents. They are hopeful that things will be back on-track, very soon. Donations of goods are still being received from local residents, and for this they are extremely grateful. Of course, contributions are still much need ed and ver y welcome. Due to a generous benefactor, a fundraisng auction will be held in late-November

featuring quite a few donated goods, which will assist the cause greatly. Plans for the new building are underway and applications for funding are also in the processing stage. If anyone has any aluminium windows suitable for the extension to the Men’s Shed, shed, then please contact: Neil Bennett 03 347 3173 or 027 430 3076 or Email: rollyshed@xtra.co.nz

The new centre was officially blessed and saw sponsors officially welcomed by Mayor Kelvin Coe and Selwyn MP Amy Adams at an event on Friday, May 31st. The 2,800 square metre facility features an eight-lane twenty five metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool with spa area, a learn-toswim pool and a leisure pool with a lazy river. The four main pools have walk in access to ensure they are accessible to everyone. A disability hoist will also be installed beside the spa pool so anyone can use this. The centre includes an air to air heat recovery system which recovers heat off exhaust air to heat fresh air. A floating screed floor is used in the centre. This type of floor is common in Europe but rare in New Zealand. This reduces energy costs by minimising the amount of heat lost into the ground. Speaking at the event to thank sponsors on May 31st, Mayor Kelvin Coe said, “There is a strong demand for a year round aquatic facility. We know this because we received over 1,400 enrolments for our new

swim school before the facility was even ready to open.” $1.4 million has been raised so far in towards the cost of the facility through fundraising. The Mayor thanked the Lottery Grants Board, the Southern Tr u s t, th e C an t er b u r y Community Trust and the many individuals and businesses who h ad h e l p ed w i th th e fundraising. Around 300 tiles painted by the community as part of the fundraising effort are displayed at the centre on the corridor between the changing area and the pools. The centre will employ around fifty staff in full time and part time roles which include swim coaches, lifeguards, aquafitness instructors and administration and pool maintenance roles. So often at this time of year, mid-winter functions and a night out to watch sport at the local, are ver y common social activities. Fortunately local hotel and restaurant staff are extremely vigilant when it comes to being responsible hosts and most have a courtesy van available, or are able to encourage patrons to arrange safe transport home after a few drinks. Regretfully, the numbers of alcohol related crashes in Selwyn are showing an increase from the previous five year period, with 78 injury crashes being recorded during 2008 and 2012. There were eleven fatalities and 28 people that received serious injuries as a result of these crashes. “As with our recent drink driving cam p ai g n, th e po pu l ar

campaign image and messages will again be seen in local papers and hotels to remind our residents and visitors when having a few drinks, plan a safe ride home before going out. Arranging a sober driver or making use of the pub’s courtesy van are two easy ways to ensure the safety of yourself and others.” Selwyn District Road Safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning stressed. “The same message applies if you are organising a get together in your own home. Either arrange safe transport for your guests or let them sleep over. Everyone can play a part in reducing these avoidable crashes. Stopping someone from getting behind the wheel after they’ve had too many drinks could save their life.” Ngaire finished.
