On November 12th, Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe, Coe led a cel ebration to recognise construction completion of St John of God Hauora Trust’s second home in Rolleston, for people living with a disability.

Mayor Coe and the first resident of the St John of God Selwyn home, Katarina Sukhanov, Sukhanov cut a ribbon to mark the completed construction followed by Katarina unveiling a plaque.

The celebrations which formed part of a public open afternoon to learn about the service were also attended by the Most Reverend Barry Jones DD, Bishop of Christchurch, who conducted a blessing of the new building.

The St John of God Selwyn facility at 23 Masefield Drive, Rolleston now comprises two fully accessible homes with 24-hour staffing for people living with a disability. Each home is able to accommodate six people requiring high level

care, with a community lifestyle.

These homes are one of the options for high needs care and support provided by Health and Ability Services, a multi-site disability service of St John of God Hauora Trust.

“The homes we have in the Rolleston community exemplify our social model of care where people with complex needs can live a full life as part of a supportive community,” said Virginia Spoors, Spoors Regional Manager (Southern), Health and Ability Services.

When looking for appropriate locations for community-based services, the Trust identified Rolleston as ideal. “It has been designed to be accessible, has good access to community services such as the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, and a vibrant community life,” Virginia added.

“The community has been very supportive of the service and those living at St John of God Selwyn,” she concluded.

Selwyn Launch Group has been up and running since March 2013 and was established as an advocacy Group to support young people (18 -30 year old school leavers) with disabilities, in the Selwyn District.

The main aim of the original meeting was to try and gather families together within the Selwyn District, and put the case forward for more support for young people with disabilities in the district’s local communities.

Thereby giving these young people more opportunities and involvement locally, rather than having to travel to the City for Provider Services, supported work, or employment placements.

Now an es tabl ish ed organisation, Selwyn Launch group have created a database and are able to refer young people to some of the services that are now operating, particularly in Rolleston.

Some of the services available to these young people and being accessed by them are: Activities organised by Idea services: Once a week Idea Services facilitate a programme run out of the Rolleston Community Centre. They are hoping to increase this service

to two days a week in the near future.

Star Jam: dance and music group once a week, Rolleston Community Centre.

Special Olympics: swimming once a week - Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

Geoff Leathwick’s Sports Activities: held once a month, Geoff organises a sports activity afternoon on the second Saturday of the month – Rolleston Community Centre.

Transition Support: Young ones transitioning from school can receive information on options such as Enabling Good Lives: Six, weekly, meetings at the Selwyn Community House, as wel l as s e ve r al information evenings, discussing, among other things, flatting/

housing options.

Tania Karauria of Rolleston has recently been named as the deserving winner of Weight Watchers Slimmer of the Year.

Tania lost 34 kilograms and kept it off! She is now on her way to becoming a Personal Trainer through Fitlink New Zealand.

39 year-old Tania’s inspiring weight-loss journey began in September 2012 after visiting her grandmother, who was

terminally ill with brain cancer.

Her mother, had brought some apple turnovers to the visit.

When Tania was offered one, her grandmother commented, “She’s eaten enough of those”.

It was the catalyst for a life-changing decision.

At only 4’.9” ft tall, Tania had been overweight for fifteen years weighing in at 93.5 kilograms at her heaviest. Now she sticks to a routine of

exercise (either running or weights) six days a week, for around an hour, as well as eating three portion-controlled meals, high in protein and fibre.

Tania has completed three half marathons and a duathlon series in the past two years, something that just wouldn’t have been possible when she was at her heaviest.

An outstanding achievement and a much deserved award.

Rolleston Combined Probus Club members enjoyed a wonderful outing in October to Oxford where they visited Ribblesdale Gardens, which was in peak condition ready for the fete to be held there following the Probus visit.

November’s speaker was Dr Victoria Metcalf, Metcalf an Antarctic researcher who had been down to the ice seven times. Victoria’s area of expertise was the study of penguins and sea life and she admitted to loving the icy continent. Victoria delivered an interes ting Pow er Poin t presentation complete with

numerous photo’s. The group found her talk extremely interesting and entertaining.

The Mini Speaker for this meeting was Tracey Dearsley f r om S elw yn S ag es , a programme which helps people with life skills in the community.

Probus members have just undertaken a much-lookedforward-to trip to Erewhon - one that was so popular it necessitated two coaches for transportation. The group also visited the restored original Hakatere homestead as well as Edoras where the Lord of The Rings was filmed.

“Our Christmas lunch is on December 9th, in the main dining hall at Lincoln University, and I believe Santa is coming so be prepared,” said Probus publicity officer, Neil Bennett.

The Hororata Highland Games got underway in near perfect weather conditions on Saturday and the crowds (approx 8,000 people attended) flocked to the domain to enjoy what was on offer. There was more than plenty on offer too, the stalls all appeared to be doing a good trade and the competition e ven ts attr acted l ar g e audiences. 300 competitors took part in the event, made up of fifty Solo Pipers and Drumm ers, 89 H ighl and Dancers, eleven Pipe Bands, fifteen runners ran the Kilted Mile, eight Tug O’ War teams, ten novice Heavy athletes and nine Professional athletes.

Records were broken by the entry of 200 primary school aged children who competed in the Junior Warriors heavy events. The Games also hosted fifteen Scottish Clans, seventy stall holders, 600 corporate and VIP guests, including Chieftain Sir Bob Parker and Joanna, Joanna Lady Parker.

“This is the most amazing event I have ever had the privilege of being involved in. A huge effort goes in from hundreds of volunteers to put on a professional, entertaining event f o r bo th vi s i to r s an d competitors,” said Event Manager Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll Th e i n au gu r al O cean i a Heavyweight Championship saw the best line-up of heavy athletes in the Southern Hemisphere since the World Championships in the early 2000’s. Australia’s Scott Martin won the Championship, with Jono McFarlane (NZ) second while Morgan Westmoreland (Aust) and Jeremy Hogg (Aust) tied for third.

“I love this event; it is my favourite one to compete in.

There is no other event in Australasia offering the full range of Highland compeition,” said Heavy Athlete, Morgan Westmoreland. “I have been coming here since the first Games and the evolution over

four years is staggering. I am looking forward to heading back again next year!”

“A lot of first time visitors are surprised at the array of activities and entertainment on offer at the Games. It really is a full family day out where people can get involved as well as en jo y watch ing th e competitions,” Cindy concluded.

Rolleston School takes great pride in introducing their giraffe. The Christchurch Stands Tall event has been responsible for placing fabulously decorated giraffes on a trail in and around Christchurch. These can be found by either map or phone app and then enjoyed by all.

The Christchurch Stands Tall Schools Programme attracted registration from 48 schools who decorated 1.3m Giraffes that are now also displayed on the trail.

Each school involved was given a calf sized Giraffe sculpture to design and decorate. A Wild in Art education pack was sent to each school to give teachers and students lots of inspiration and ideas for how to make their sculpture unique to their school.

Thanks to the generosity of Dulux NZ each school was given a pack of paints to get them started on the decorating of

their Giraffe.

The school Giraffes are displayed in towers across the city alongside the large sculptures and are included in the trail map. At the end of the trail the schools’ sculptures will be returned to their schools for future fun and creativity.

Rolleston School takes great pride in introducing their giraffe, ‘Waihanga’. The Maori name is the word for - make, build, construct, erect and create.

“We think it’s the perfect name for our giraffe,” said a spokesperson for the School, “in that it depicts the Christchurch rebuild.

The giraffe design tells a story that has been inspired by the myth Maui and the Sun. On the Rolleston School’s giraffe, Maui is pulling Christchurch city out of the rubble.

Rolleston Library will be closed temporarily for the first two weeks in December to allow its interior to be renovated thereby creating more space for reading, events, new books and other resources.

“The current library is servicing a much larger population than it was built for and the refit aims to make the best use of the space available in the library building,” said Selwyn Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon.

Carlyon When the library opened in 2000, Rolleston’s population was under 2,000. The town now has a population of almost 12,000. A new library building is proposed for the future as par t of p lans for th e development of the Rolleston Town Centre.

“As part of the current renovations the existing issues desk and the Council service counter (which is not well used on average only four persons per day take advantage of it) at the library will be removed to create more space for people to use for reading, research, l i b r a r y e ve n t s a n d programmes,” Vicki said.

Selwyn Libraries are starting the process of implementing RFID, a wireless technology. Library staff will start tagging all items in the Rolleston Library collection with RFID tags while th e l i b r ar y i s cl o s ed temporarily. The tags replace the current barcodes and will make it easier and faster for library users to scan and check out books.

Once the r eno vation is completed, Council service centre functions will move to the Council’s Rolleston Headquarters.

While the closure occurs, the mobile library will be making regular visits to the Rolleston Community Centre car park to enable people to check out books.

A mobile library timetable showing when visits occur is available online at www.selwynlibrary.co.nz Library books can still be returned to the returns slot at Rolleston Library.

Online library services such as the library catalogue, online databases, e books and Zinio magazines will continue to be available as normal during the temporary library closure.

In most of these cases blame can be apportioned, or in the case of illness - there is generally some time to come to terms with the inevitable. Not so for double amputee Stacey Herbert of Rolleston. Stacey is a young woman, who was at her place of work on the top floor of the Christchurch Press building, Cathedral Square when the February quake struck, trapping her for eight hours and resulting in, amongst other things, the loss of both her legs.

H o r or ata’ s D a ve S l ig h , supported by the Methven Adult Riding Club has organised an unique fundraiser to assist with Stacey’s currently running fundraising appeal. Thanks to Stew and J ess Gunn of Brooksdale Station just west of Springfield, the property will play host to a scenic horse trek, organised by Dave to assist S ta ce y wi th g et tin g computerised prosthetics.

“The Brooksdale area is outstanding trekking country and an opportunity to help this courageous and positive Cantabrian walk again,” Dave commented.

Stacey tells her story: “I'm trying to raise the necessary funds to get to

Oklahoma, USA and a clinic called Hanger. I lost both legs i n th e Feb ru ar y 2011 earthquake that devastated Christchurch. I was on the top floor of The Press building when the already damaged roof, collapsed. I was trapped for over eight hours and sustained numerous injuries, but the most significant was the loss of both legs, high above the knee. Due to the height of the amputations, I am currently having a procedure which will lengthen my left side to ensure the best possible fit for prosthetics when I go to Hanger in Oklahoma. This is a painful procedure where a traction-ing device stretches the leg a millimetre per day. It will take approximately a year to lengthen and then has to heal.

Unfortunately the prosthetic clinic here in New Zealand don't have either th e exp eri en ce o r th e technology to go on to the next step. This is why I need to go overseas where my type of amputation is more common, often seen when soldiers return with injuries sustained in wars.”

The West Melton Bowling Club held their opening day on September 13th. As a result of the inclement weather, play was unable to take place but Club stalwart Ross Sadler, Sadler who is currently the Malvern Sub Association president, delivered the first bowl for the season.

The ladies membership received a boost this year with four new members joining the Club.

On September 27th the Presidents Cup was held. This competition, played between teams made up from Club members, was won by Ali Gardener, Gardener Dennis Herrick, Herrick Colin Walsh and Bob Burnett(s).

They came third in the small dog section.

West Melton School’s recent pet day was deemed an outstanding success with over 200 animals of all breeds and varieties turning out to be looked at and judged. There was a huge increase in the number of dogs making an appearance and these came in all shapes and sizes - but with a common denominator, they were much loved and much cared for.

The Wharenui was groaning under the weight of all the

baking, flowers, vegetables, art and construction work to be judged - and it made for wonderful viewing.

The School’s Eco Warriors did a roaring trade in vegetable plants and worm wee (for the garden!!) and the PTA sold out of ice creams (which didn’t have anything to do with worm wee!).

The day appeared to be enjoyed by all - animals and humans alike.

The Establishment Board of Trustees (EBOT) has recently announced that Sylvia Fidow has accepted the position of principal at West Rolleston Primary School.

EBOT chair Simon McDermott said the board had been i m p r es s ed b y S yl vi a’ s ex p er i en ce, vi s i o n an d leadership.

“Sylvia will bring a solid depth of experience, enthusiasm and up to date learning to our new school. It is an exciting time for West Rolleston Primary School with Sylvia being able to be involved in the early planning and creation of the actual build while developing its culture and curriculum.”

Clearview Students had an extremely successful weekend of Jump Jam recently after having spent many hours throughout the year preparing for the South Island Regional Competition.

This year, for the first time, Clearview entered two students into the Jump Jam Idol section of the competition. In this section Georgia Shaw and Aimee Taylor instructed their own routine for a group of one hundred students. Bo th stud ents r ecei ved an aw ard f o r sportsmanship and Aimee was placed third in her category.

Due to the school’s success in last year’s National competition, all Clearview’s teams were required to step up to the open category. This year, three teams were entered into the South Island Regionals and they all earned a placing. The Year 1/2/3 team Clearview Cuties (dressed in yellow - but you’ll have to believe us about that) were excited to be placed first in their category, the year 4/5/6

team (mimes) were placed third in their category, while the Year 7/8 team (punk) took out a second placing.

In addition, this year a number of other awards were presented to teams for excellence in creati vity, sportsmanship, presentation, costume and technical execution. All three teams received an excellence award in every area possible, with the Year 4/5/6 team recei ving an aw ard for Outstanding Excellence in Sportsmanship. J ust two Outstanding Excellence in Sportsmanship awards were presented, so this was definitely an achievement to be proud of.

Sylvia has a Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Teaching, and has undertaken extensive work towards a PostGraduate Diploma in Education endorsed in Leadership. She and her family love being involved in the community and look forward to becoming part of the makeup of Rolleston.

Sylvia will take up the role fulltime from January 2015, where she will lead curriculum planning for West Rolleston Primary School, and work alongside the board to appoint other staff members.

Today (Wed 26th Nov) the Establishment Board for the West Rolleston Primary School arranged with the Taumautu Runanga of Ngati Moki Marae to carry out an initial blessing of the land.

CHILD CANCER EVENT The Longueville Gallery in Tai Tapu has a unique idea for Canterbury children – the gift of an original piece of art and the chance to support the Child Cancer Foundation.

A limited number of children will have the chance to purchase artworks, from New Zealand artists, at the Gallery’s annual ‘Art of Courage’ event.

This is the sixth year that Sharon Ovenden from the Longueville Gallery has run the popular event, where children choose their piece of art from the selection of donated pieces unassisted by an adult.

The event sees artists from thro ug ho ut Ne w Zeal an d donating original pieces of artwork to the event. The artwork is then sold through a pre-paid voucher system, with all profits of sale going to the Child Cancer Foundation. The $100 voucher must be gifted to a child aged between 4-14 years.

“It is fascinating watching the children select their choice of artwork from the donated works with no adult input. I’ve found children choose intuitively with no regard to the value of the piece or the artist and they are enormously proud of their art purchase.”

The event takes place on Sunday, November 30th at the Longueville Gallery. Children will be given an allocated time, and divided into groups of ten at half hourly intervals throughout the day.

Sharon says each time slot has a fresh selection of work available for choice, which means no time slot is better than another and there will always be a large number of pieces of artwork available to select from.

The Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct government funding, so it relies on the generosity of New Zealanders.

“We are very grateful to Sharon for organising this popular and unique event for the last six years and to the artists who have donated their work. We hope the children have fun selecting a piece of art that will no doubt be with them for life,” said a Child Cancer Society spokesperson.
