Local Glider pilot, Nick Oakley of Hororata has just come away from the South Island Regional Gliding Championships with some very creditable results first place overall in Standard Class and second overall in the combined Fifteen Metre / Standard Class N i ck co mp eted at th e Ch am pi onsh ips , h eld i n Omarama from November 16th through to the 23rd. At twenty years old, he was the youngest pilot competing and looking back at the previous winners was probably the youngest ever to win the Standard Class. “He flies a borrowed ASW19 which is nearly forty years old and is competing against more experienced pilots, flying higher performance gliders,” said his proud mother Kate Oakley. Oakley Competitors in the event came from throughout New Zealand, along with some hailing from as far afield as Australia and the United Kingdom. Nick was also successful in winning an additional trophy for the best
performance of a South Island Pilot. Nick has now departed (last weekend) to fly at the tenth Austral ian J unior Gliding Championships (known as ‘JoeyGlide’) for pilots twenty five years and under. These Championships are to be held at Narromine, NSW between, December 7th and 14th. Nick has hired a Discus 2 glider and travelled over a week early, so as to get used to not only the glider, but also the new flying conditions. “The flying is very different to New Zealand,” said Kate, “over there it can be up to forty degrees Celsius, flat land and thermal conditions. Ver y different to the mountain flying the boys are used to over here.” Nicholas is in Australia with fellow Canterbury Gliding Club pilot Alex McCaw. McCaw The pair are aiming to fly at the same location next year as well, for the Junior Pre-Worlds which lead up to the World Junior Gliding Championships in 2015.
